Hello! I’m Lost Magazine,

lost the guide to where to find it

nice to find you!

OH hello there! It’s so nice to have you reading me! I’m Lost Magazine, so glad you found me. I just thought I’d say hello, I know we’re old friends and all, but it’s great to check in every once in a while and say hi, how are you? Good? Me too. Actually I’m really great thanks for asking. Y’know what? I’ve been around since 2001. Yep! Lost Magazine is 14 years old! (No wonder I’ve got pimples… oh I mean staples…) In case you don’t read the fine print in the front of the mag, Lost Magazine is produced by three people. Stefan Overzier, Danni Petkovic and Kathy Douglas. They pull this wee mag together for you every month. Together the lost kids produce and distribute 80,000 copies a year. Phew! Heaps huh? That’s a lotta peeps reading me cover to cover! Yay!! It’s no mean task, that’s a lot of apostrophe’s to get in the right place (see what I did there?) Oh geez my eyes are bleeding… But Stefan, Danni and Kathy LOVE it. They LOVE creating this lovely little magazine full of great stuff to do, and this beautiful region we all adore. They adore our readers too. (Yes you! x x) The visitors and locals who pop this little mag into their bags, glove boxes and back pockets and take it with them. In fact, one of the first things Stefan, Danni and Kathy would do when they first visited the area, was to pick up a Lost to read… and then they all fell in love with everything the region has to offer, and moved here… and the rest is history. Of course Stefan, Danni and Kathy also love our awesome advertisers, who in turn, love the connection this magazine (the one in your hot little hands right now) gives them to our town, and those travelling through it. Lost Magazine ends up in the hands of every single person who books accommodation through one of the many accommodation places in town, and via information centres, cafés, bars, shops, galleries, and everywhere with a bench really.

Help Build a School

Do it for the kids. Do it for the karma

DAYLESFORD Dharma School is Australia’s only Buddhist primary school. Established now for seven years, the little school is growing and growing, so much so, that it has almost outgrown its current humble premises. Dharma School is now looking to buy land close to Daylesford to build a larger school incorporating a Dharma Secondary School. It’s exciting times for our community and this wonderful school, nurturing and teaching the peaceful, kind and mindful adults of the future. Daylesford Dharma School has just launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, with an aim to raise $450K to purchase land for the new school. Every dollar helps – there are lovely incentives and a beautiful video explaining the cause. Here’s the link… www.indiegogo.com/ projects/our-school-needs-a-new-home Check it out and give generously. For mindful future leaders, and so much good karma coming your way.

Billycart fun

in the school holidays

4

THERE was a time when all a kid needed was a box, four wheels, and a hill to have the most fun any kid could possibly have. The days of the mighty Billycart are fondly and firmly planted in your Pop’s mind as some of the best times of his life… and they are yours to recreate at the Build A Billycart Workshop to be held at The ARC (39 Smith Street Daylesford). Thursday, July 2, instructors from CraftPower will help participants design and build a full sized Billycart. Learn all the tips and tricks so you can build your very own Billycart at home. Learn about steering, (important) pushing (important going back up the hill) and whether or not red paint will make your billycart go faster. (Of course it will.) There are loads of great hills around the region to test out your billycarts (off road only kids. Don’t even think about Central Springs Rd.). The workshop is $10 and limited to kids aged 8+. Let’s Roll!

Ten Pin Bowling in Daylesford

BASICALLY, the world needs more ten pin bowling. Think about it, ten pin bowling encourages team work, fun and friendship. It’s about rolling along on the straight and narrow, trying to stay out of the gutter, and knocking down obstacles standing in your way. Metaphors for life people!! Ten pin bowling is basically all about life. (OK, so we totally made that up, but let’s roll (ahem) with it huh?) These school holidays The ARC (39 Smith Street, Daylesford) will be transformed into a bowling alley for one big morning of bowling for kids! Friday, July 3, from 10am – 11:30am come and help build the lanes, then the kids will bowl ‘til they drop! Cost is $3. (Daggy shoes not required.) Ten Pin Bowling at The ARC is a part of WinterFest. nice to meet you mini beasts!

8

ONE thing that stands out when you visit the country is the absolute silence at night. There’s no constant car noise, no beeps and sirens, no distant trains tooting or trams dinging, and sometimes there’s no noise at all. This time of year silence is rare, as the mini beasts return to play in winter puddles and ponds. Frogs can be heard at any time of day and at night they really like to party. Tuesday, July 7, from 2:30pm, zoologist Prue Simmons will be introducing the kids to the fascinating world of mini beasts and fabulous frogs at the Daylesford Library (Bridport Street). This free session is for kids aged from 4+. Learn about the amazing tiny creatures you can find in the bottom of the garden. Discover what creeps, what crawls, which mini-beasts help out in the garden and learn why frogs have such big eyes! Book your spot to meet the mini beasts, call Daylesford Library 5348 2800. Baking Our Blues Away

lost the guide to where to find it

helping others one cake at a time

12

IN 2012, local gal Michelle Symes started a movement that… well, kind of took off! Baking our Blues Away is a wonderful warm-hearted initiative that helps raise awareness of depression and anxiety, on a local level. The idea is that on Wednesday, July 15, you bake something for someone you know who’s having a hard time at the moment, and you give them your baked treat as an opener to a conversation. Bake cupcakes for a neighbour, make a slice for a friend having a tough time, muffins for a colleague who could use a shoulder, or a cake for a family who could use a smile, and share your gift with them over a cuppa and a chat. This simple gesture can really help someone out in a tough time. Connecting with someone who wants to share their story is a really powerful (and completely lovely) thing to do. A burden shared is a burden halved… (and a cake shared is also a cake halved…) so it’s a win-win for all. This year Baking Our Blues Away is partnering with Beyond Blue to help raise money for depression and anxiety awareness. You’re invited to register your involvement in Baking our Blues Away online. Once registered you will receive access to recipes, fun printables, and you’ll be the first to hear all the feel-good stories shared on the day. The power of home baking warms the heart and brings a smile on the best of days, so on the worst of days something baked with love can really make a difference. Baking Our Blues Away is a wonderful community event that anyone can take part in… across the street, or across the world. Over the past three years more than 15,000 people have shared a cuppa and a baked treat with someone who could use a smile. Julie Goodwin, Dannii Minogue, Sarah Wilson and others have shared the Baking our Blues Away message with an audience of 2 million people. Not bad for a small town initiative. (Thanks Michelle!) More info, recipes and registrations at bakingourbluesaway.com.au. Share the cake love at #bakingourbluesaway #bakesharecare and any spectacular cake fails at #bobacakefail LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

THE Central Highlands region is pretty amazing. It is a haven for creative and artistic folk, its natural beauty is astounding, the natural springs that flow beneath our feet and rich volcanic soils feed the people who live here, and the four seasons are distinct and beautiful. Here you’ll find romantic villages and Instagram worthy country vistas beckoning an escape from the city. And on any given weekend you’ll find loads of people up here from the city buying a lotto ticket and dreaming of their ‘other life in the country’. Some are even lucky enough to make this dream come true. For Lynette and Andres, of Black Cat Truffles, they are living the tree change dream. After searching the district for the perfect plot of land, they realised their dream at 150 Howards Road Wattle Flat (close to Creswick). As it turns out - the Central Highlands region also produces perfect conditions in which to grow truffles, (frosty cold in winter + long warm days in summer + luscious dirt = perfect for oak trees to sink their roots into and = lovely big truffles! - Nice equation there!) And it’s here where Lynette and Andres planted one thousand oaks in which to make their ultimate truffle tree change dream come true! They are sharing a slice of their lovely life on their idyllic truffle farm throughout the winter months at one of many truffle events held throughout the state. Sunday, July 19, they invite you to A Taste Of Truffles. Visit the farm, learn more about this extraordinary luxury delicacy. Speak to the growers, see their truffle dogs in action sniffing out the delectable lumps of brown fungi, (they are totally amazing!) harvest truffles and sample a range of truffle treats. Cost $110 (Includes all the days’ activities and six tastings, as well as tea, coffee and morning tea.) Truffle will also be available to purchase on the day. Ooh la la! HAPPY New Financial Year! Hooray! Pass the party poppers and Champagne! (We get to celebrate this right?) Um, yep. Barry loves to share the joy of the organ to all who will listen, and listen you must… prepare to be mesmerized, tantalized and tranquillized by Barry and his dynamic organ recital – as he demonstrates all the organ can do at the Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves St) Castlemaine, Friday, July 31. Barry will demonstrate how to host your very own home organ party… He’ll be dressing to impress, and would love it if you would do the same… Dust off the safari suit gents, or appropriate evening gown ladies, and hit the town for the ultimate home organ party experience. Doors open at 6pm, show from 8pm. More information and tickets available from theroyalc.com.au, or call the Theatre Royal 5472 1196. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU
