EXCITING times everyone… we’re past half way – Oh yes! The solstice has been and gone and we now find ourselves on the slippery slope to summertime – the days are getting longer and the nights are getting shorter… can’t you tell?! Can’t you see the vast summer days ahead? Through the endless mist and fog? (Ok… so we might be getting slightly ahead of ourselves here.) If you’re local and you’re not heading north this month you have two options. Stock up on new flanny PJs and bunker down for some serious doona time, or don the Kathmandu puffer and GET AMONGST IT! WinterFest is the annual winter school holiday program here in Daylesford, and this year it’s a cracker. From Monday, June 27, until Friday, July 8, The ARC (at 39 Smith Street) will be pumping with amazing activities for school aged kiddos. This year the program includes everything from parkour to origami and trapeze, bubble soccer to songwriting and archery! Hellooo! Who wants a doona day when you can parkour?!?! Parents are welcome to make the most of the kiosk at The ARC during the sessions, there’ll be healthy snack options and of course life saving coffee to wrap your cold hands around. Parents and carers are welcome to stay during activities as well… or you can sneak away to your warm car with your coffee and play on your phone for an hour, we won’t tell anyone. The full list of activities was handed out with school newsletters before the end of term, but if the list came to grief with a mushy banana at the bottom of the schoolbag you can find the full program online at daylesfordarc.com. au. Most WinterFest activities cost between $10 and $12, and bookings are being taken now. Call 5438 1777 to book the kidlets in! steam train for kids now departing

TRAINS are so great. Even if you do a monotonous daily commute on a train, it’s still all kinds of fun. You get to look out the window at the world passing by, you can read your book, catch up on your social media, listen to some tunes, and you can spy on your fellow train travellers and make up stories about their lives. (Or is that just us?) The train obsession starts young. Kids are mad about a train - and the more Thomas-y the better. Steam trains are the ultimate trainy experience. These school holidays the Victorian Goldfields Railway is once again rolling out its Steam Trains for Kids program. Saturday, July 2, and Sunday, July 3, families are welcome to head to Maldon Train Station, as the train departs for Muckleford Station at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. The round trip takes an hour and kids are welcome to hang out the window for a bit of kangaroo spotting. Be entertained by roving performers at the station, there will be a sausage sizzle on the go for hungry travellers, and you’re welcome to meet the train driver and blow the whistle on one of the steam engines. Toot toot!! (You know you want to… ask nicely, we’re sure you’ll be allowed to... Just try doing that on the Metro.) The regular steam train services between Castlemaine and Maldon will be running on the day too (including first class lounge cars – fancy!) Even the most jaded commuter will love the steam train experience, no beeping doors, no unintelligible announcements, no agro, and no Myki required. (If only you could steam train it to Flinders Street each day! *sigh*) Tickets are $25 per adult, $15 for kids (aged 2 – 15) or $75 for a family of two adults and 2-3 kids). For more info and bookings go to vgr.com.au (book online for a 10% discount) tickets are also available on the day. Email any enquiries to info@vgr.com.au LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

OH hi there school holidays… you’re here again! (Hooray!) Without doubt, the winter hols are the trickiest. The kidlets are housebound on icy, drizzly days and we all go a little potty balancing screen-time, craft, acrobatics off the couch and kneeling on Lego. Creswick Theatre Company has the answer for a fab school holiday activity. This month they are performing Alice in Wonderland – A Pantomime for all Ages at the Courthouse Theatre, Raglan St. Creswick. This kids’ performance is interactive, audience participation is encouraged (in fact, the Queen demands it)! Meet all your fave characters, including the White Rabbit, the Wicked Queen, the very Mad Hatter, a curious cat and quirky caterpillar. Performances will be held Tuesday, July 6, Wednesday, July 7, and Thursday, July 8, at 11am and 2pm. Tickets are $8. More info at: creswicktheatre. com or call 0411 962 775. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

Oozy, Squishy, Squelchy clay
THERE’S nothing quite like squooshing your fingers into a lump of soft, cool clay. Creating something beautiful from a lump of earth is a humbling experience. Clay can be sculpted and teased into a form by anyone of any age, and at Winterfest the kids are invited to a creative clay session hosted by Daylesford’s ClaySpace collective. Thursday, July 7, from 2pm ‘til 3pm the kids are welcome to come and have a play with clay at The ARC (39 Smith Street), and if they really love their creations ClaySpace will fire them in their kiln (for a small fee). Kids are effortlessly creative and playing with clay calms their busy bodies and focuses their minds. Kids make amazing stuff with clay. The clay session costs $12. Feeling Festive

CHRISTMAS in July is a brilliant idea. Having Christmas in December is… let’s face it, slightly annoying. There’s so much on with work break ups, and holidays, and end of the school year, and New Year’s Eve. And everyone’s birthday… (why does EVERYONE have a birthday in December??!) And everyone has to catch up in the week BEFORE CHRISTMAS?!! Why the stress? Can’t we catch up in April? Or September? OR JULY?!! Yes. Christmas in July is a genius idea. A few clever peeps have cottoned on to this idea and are rolling out festive celebrations this month. One such civilized place to gather friends and family to share the love over a delicious hearty meal with a roaring open fire is Daylesford Cider Company. Saturday, July 9, Daylesford Cider Company (at 155 Dairyflat Road just outside of Daylesford) will be serving up loads of Christmas love with an amazing feast, (think: a big roast with amazing warm and hearty sides… none of this ‘summer salad business’), they’ll also be serving delicious spiced mulled cider and mince pies, and popular Melbourne musos The Logan Duo will be performing live from 1pm – 4pm, and no doubt playing a few fave Chrissy tunes to bring the Chrissy vibe. Be sure to brush up on the words to a carol or two to join in the singalong. Christmas in July at Daylesford Cider Company will be hugely popular, so bookings are essential… um, yep, say no more you had us at mulled cider. We’re a Community of wombats
WOMBATS are the business. We totally love them in this neck of the woods. We name everything after them… Wombat Forest, Wombat Hill, Wombat Nursery, Wombat Street, originally even the township of Daylesford was called Wombat (true story). So it was only fitting that one day some local musos should make a record label and call it: Wombat State Records. This is a grass roots label/artist collective featuring local acts, and they get out there amongst it playing gigs to raise some $$ to put back into their label to push their music further. Friday, July 8, Wombat State Records will feature a line up of four acts, Danny Kransky, Scurvylicious, Team Love and Masco Sound System at the Old Hepburn Hotel. (236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) Entry is $10. Think of it as an investment in a great night out and the future of music. (Ten bucks well spent we think). For more info go to oldhepburnhotel.com.au

This year Words in Winter will run Friday, August 5, ‘til Sunday, August 7, and the theme is ‘Food For Thought’. Apt considering the abundance of foodie goodness that surrounds us here in the Central Highlands. The program will be served up with workshops, poetry, music, kids events, games, signings and hot and tasty discussions. The full program will be released soon, but just to whet your appetite for now, here’s a taste of what you can expect: Local storyteller Anne E. Stewart will story slam her way into your hearts, author Cate Kennedy will entice us with her poetry and music, John Lethlean and Claude Forrell will discuss this region and its ‘Golden Triangle of Food’. Andrew Masterson will launch his new book: Lolcatz, Santa, and Death by Dog. Local farmers, Tammi Jonas, Danny from Danny’s Farm and Florian from Mt. Franklin Organics will tell their tales of food and farming. Say a cheery hello to local author of the Lunch Lady blog and ace magazine of the same name, Kate Berry. There will be music workshops at Daylesford Neighbourhood House with Helen Davey, and Rohan Anderson author of Whole Larder Love and Practiculture will inspire you to get out of the supermarket and into your backyard. Indulge your inner writer and take in a creative non-fiction workshop with Kevin Childs, and there’ll be loads of great live music around town. The kids (8-12) can get into a storytelling workshop with Dumbo Feather, as well as writing comps for everyone, the much-loved Clever Crossword Challenge and more. Phew!
