lost the guide to where to find it

and carry on baking THE PERFECT way to beat the winter blues is baking! And we don’t mean in the sun… (although…sunshine…ahhh…) Local chef and baker extraordinaire: Michelle Symes aka The Vintage Baker, has taken up the challenge to ‘bake the blues away’ and is encouraging others to do the same. Concerned by the rise in the stats on depression, anxiety and mental illness and the effect it has on sufferers and those that care for them, Michelle has started a facebook page aptly called ‘Baking Our Blues Away’. It’s not about raising funds or finding cures, quite simply it’s about doing something nice for someone else… naaww… So on Friday, June 1, you are hereby encouraged to take the time to bake something delicious for someone who you know that could do with a pep me up. (Or if you’re not fussed by cooking and your oven is more of a storage unit, pick up a cupcake from the bakery or some handmade bikkies from a local café). Below is the easiest recipe in the world (read - fool proof) and will be sure to bring a smile… it’s the five minute mug cake recipe. Simple, fun and a tad quirky and all you need is the microwave – so has to be fool proof… no burnt cakes in sight. Introducing the 5 Minute Mug Cake: 4 tblspns flour 4 tblspns sugar 2 tblspns cocoa 3 tblspn milk 3 tblspn veg oil 1 egg (lightly whisked) 3 tblspn choc chips (optional) splash of vanilla extract In 1 large coffee mug add dry ingredients and mix well. Add egg and mix thoroughly, follow with milk and oil and mix well. Add the choc chips and vanilla extract and mix. Place in microwave, cook for approx 3 minutes. Checking at 1 minute intervals (3 mins is based on 1000 watt microwave) Voilà- you are baking!! And for the last step – give said mug to a friend or family in need, and share some time together with a cuppa. dp

Tour

de Creswick JUST 40 minutes from Daylesford, Ballarat is fast gaining a reputation as a cycling city. They’re mad about their lycra and carbon fibre bikes down there! And occasionally a cycling event will roll on our way. The Fred Icke Memorial Bike Race is an annual event held in Creswick and this year around 250 junior and senior cyclists are competing. The event will be held Saturday, June 2, from 10:15am. Line the wide streets of Creswick and cheer the riders on as they whiz by. The town is putting on bands, a sausage sizzle, market stalls and more. Grab an exquisite hand crafted croissant from new French patisserie Le Peche Gourmand (69a Albert Street) and you’ll feel very Tour de Creswick. For more info on the event telephone: 5345 8254, or go to the website at: vic.cycling.org.au. kd

Little Things LAPIDARY. It sounds like a medical procedure. But in fact, Lapidary is the art of polishing, cutting and setting gemstones, to make them look shiny and spesh. (Much more pleasant than a procedure we think). And if you don’t mind the odd cabochon sapphire, faceted amethyst, or even fancy a chunk of rose quartz in the rough, then you’re in luck, as the Ballarat & District Gem and Lapidary Club Gem Show will be held at Creswick Woollen Mills (Railway Parade) Saturday, June 2, and Sunday, June 3. The show will feature silversmithing, bone carving (also not a procedure) and loads of colourful gemstones to swoon over, admire and purchase. There’ll be demos and valuers on hand there to inspect your precious bits and pieces. Rock on! For more info phone the mill on: 5345 2202 or visit: creswickwool.com.

an Amen?! NOTHING like a bit of gospel music to warm the cockles when the winter chill creeps in… The Daylesford Gospel Music Festival will have you hallelujah-ing in the aisles, with performances, art and workshops Saturday, June 2, at Daylesford Town Hall, (Vincent Street). Experience the enormous sound of the Melbourne Mass Gospel Choir. This 90 voice choir is sure to shake the foundations of the old hall. After last year’s sell-out season of the ‘Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan’, this Choir knows how to deliver a hand clappin’ foot stompin’ gospel good time. There will also be performances by Kristen and Candy, Geoffrey Williams, Archer, Snack Music, and Cam Semmens delivering traditional and contemporary gospel music. The festival will be held 10:30am till 7pm and is guaranteed to shake any winter blues you might be feeling two days into June. For more info go to www.daylesfordcommunitychurch.com kd

Wanna be hardcore?

lost the guide to where to find it

Here’s the raw course for you ON SUNDAY June 3, head to Creswick Novotel Forest Resort (Midland Hwy) for the Adventure Race Australia, a no-holdsbarred extreme outdoor adventure course for, well… you adventurery types! There are two courses depending on your level of hardcoreness, so if you fancy yourself as hardcore hardcore then go all out and register for... wait for it… The Hardcore Course! Involving: 35 kilometres of mountain biking, 15km of trail running/trekking and ‘adventure legs’… which could be anything from Kayaking, Canoeing, rock climbing, abseiling, white water rafting, canyoning or archery!?! Taking around… hmmm 4.5 to 7 hours to complete!!! (yep, you really wanna remember to pack your adventure legs). Sadly all this action comes with no beer swilling, which is exactly what we need after reading all of this! Phew! Not that hardcore? (We’re hearin’ ya…) Well, there is a virgin’s adventure course, for the ‘let’s just have fun’ participants, which will only take, hmm… 3 to 4 hours to complete, and involves: Up to 15km of Mountain Biking, Up to 8km Trail Running / Trekking and the ol’ adventure legs which could again be anything from Kayaking, Canoeing, Tubing, Rock Climbing, White Water Rafting, Abseiling, Canyoning, Archery and also some basic navigation. Hardcorians… Book your place to race at: adventureraceaustralia.com.au. Or… word on the street is that the Adventure Australia folk encourage spectators, and we happen to know that the Novotel Forest Resort has a nice restaurant, a cosy lounge and an even cosier day spa. (For the hardcore facial enthusiasts among us.) Would the participants even know you weren’t watching when they were off bush for those 3 to 7 hours??? Shhhh… it’ll be our little secret. Aside: no kangaroos were harmed in this story.

A Day on the Tiles WITHOUT the distraction of warmth and sunshine, the great outdoors looks a teeny bit less-great this time of year. Winter is a brilliant time to reacquaint yourself with the great indoors and launch yourself headlong into something cosy and crafty. Creswick Neighbourhood Centre (19-21 Victoria Street) is hosting a two session how-to course on Mosaics. Mosaic is the ancient art of piecing together tiny tiles, glass, stone and bits and bobs to decorate a surface. (It’s true, the ancient Greeks invented bedazzling). The course at Creswick Neighbourhood Centre will be held (indoors!) Sunday, June 3, and the following Sunday, June 10, 10am – 3pm. Cost is $90 ($75 conc.) and all materials are provided for a fee of $35. For more info and bookings call 5345 2356 or for more course ideas and details visit: ourneighbourhood.org.au

Go wild

in an alternate world

lost the guide to where to find it

INFLUENCED by living in Ballan, author, Tor Roxburgh, has published her first fantasy novel: (her 15th published) The Light Heart of Stone. Heavily swayed by life in rural Victoria, the novel is an epic story, set in an alternate world on which plants and animals need human companions in order to thrive. The Companionaris and the Indidjinies live sideby-side. The colonising Companionaris control the talent for growing plants and breeding animals. The colonised Indidjinies own the land. And so, it would seem, some sort of balance has been achieved. The novel opens at a time when this ancient balance is faltering and the fragile harmony between the two peoples and the land is fracturing. Can the peace last? After last month’s regional launch, The Light Heart of Stone will have a city launch on Tuesday June 5, from 6:30pm at The Wilde (153 Gertrude Street Fitzroy). What a Performance!

lost the guide to where to find it

(over to you Nel Staite...)

The Performance Night is a love gig, it began in June 2000 and was devised & organised by myself and fellow Musician and sound engineer Paul Nunns. Back then, unless you were a covers band there was nowhere for local musicians to perform. Born out of our own frustration of venues continuously wanting only cover shows, we began asking some big questions about our musical environment. Where could local and original musicians showcase their talent? What incentives could we offer local venues to pay local artists, original artists, unknown artists to perform? How could we entice local audiences to attend? After much discussion with local musicians, audiences and venue owners we came up with the idea of an open mic night that comprised of pre-booked sets and open stages, to accommodate for amateur and professional musicians. The night was a fantastic success, and despite changing and evolving over the years, it continues to hold a well-loved place in the community. Performance Night can attract anywhere from 30-300 people. It really is its own entity. I look at some of the extremely talented teenagers taking the stage, and feel immensely proud to think that, in their minds, this event has always been around. A space has always been available for them to showcase their talent. A long time ago, local cermacist and friend, Petrus Spronk said to me ‘When you have a good idea, act on it’. I’m so glad I listened. Performance Night’s 12th Birthday event will be held Thursday, June 7, at the Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) 6pm till 11pm. $2 entry. in Woodend

FIREWORKS, jazz and classical music, literary treats, international guests, art exhibitions, kids’ activities… phew! The 2012 program for the Woodend Winter Arts Festival is more than impressive. Now in its eighth year, this festival showcases highly acclaimed international and local talent across a broad range of the arts. Held on the Queen’s birthday long weekend (Friday, June 8 - Monday June 11), the festival launches with a bang on Friday evening with fireworks to be held at the family friendly time of 6:30pm. Rug up and roll up by 5:30pm for food stalls and free entertainment. The fireworks will explode over Buffalo Stadium Oval (Forest Street). Friday evening tuck into the ‘Flavours of Jazz’ - with Paul Grabowsky on piano, and Julien Wilson on sax. Dinner will be prepared by the Piper Street Food Co for a night of musical and culinary deliciousness. The rest of the weekend is chocablock with classical cantatas, violin and guitar recitals, jazz, literary panels hosting thought-provoking forums, and artists with their brushes, pens and pieces poised for workshops and exhibitions. The program is filled with the big names of classical music (think Schubert, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Mozart and Haydn). The Osmosis Wind Quintet (from Holland) perform Reicha’s Revelation Saturday and Sunday. There will be special performances of Scarlatti and Handel in Cantatas of the Arcadian Academy featuring Max Gillies and Barry Jones. See inspiring recitals by composer and pianist Ian Munro, guitar virtuoso Slava Grigoryan, Tinalley String Quartet with award-winning cellist Josephine Vain, and Italian guest Davide Monti, performing the enduringly popular Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with Accademia Arcadia… and that’s just a SAMPLE of the musical performances scheduled. Phew! Lovers of the literary can hear Kerry Greenwood (author of more than 50 novels including the Phryne Fisher series … AKA Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries on ABC1), Yarns at the Pub, for some good ol’ fashioned story telling, workshops on how to get published and more…. Sooo much more we can’t fit it all into this wee mag! Best you go see what it’s all about! For more visit: woodendwinterartsfestival.org.au. kd

Sponge Cake

SPONGE cakes are as tricky as they are delicious. A perfect sponge has an even top and bottom, with the right amount of fresh whipped cream and sweet jam slathered betwixt. Slices are lighter than air with a delicate crumb. At regional and Royal shows the humble sponge becomes a weapon of mass destruction, setting fierce rivalries, dividing peers, friends and colleagues at judging time. Trentham Neighbourhood Centre invites you into the inner sanctum of Sponge School to learn how to make the perfect sponge cake. Be privy to much guarded secrets, learn the tips and expert tricks on how to produce a show stopping jaw dropping CWA class cake. If you haven’t yet heard of Graveyard Train, if you’re somewhere in the proximity of the Old Hepburn Hotel on Sunday, June 10, hoooo boy you’ll hear of them then. Graveyard Train blazed a trail onto the scene when they conjured up their very own genre: Horror Country. Summoning the macabre, the twisted, haunted and freakin’ scary, Graveyard Train belt out tunes never heard before on the likes of steel guitar, banjo, harmonica, washboard, and chains. Yes indeedy. They play the chains. It’s kooky-spookyscary-cool. Graveyard Train are touring the land to promote their new album Hollow. See them at the Old Hep, it’ll be wicked… in more ways than one. Tickets on sale now at the pub (236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs. $23 pre-sale or $25 on the door if not sold out). More info: 5348 2207. kd 24

WINTER in the garden can be tough going. It’s cold, wet and muddy, hard work once you’re out there, and even harder to get motivated to start (especially if you are warm and toasty inside!). What you need is a little inspiration. Gail Shannon is just the person to help. Gail is hosting a session on pruning fruit trees and vines through Daylesford Neighbourhood House (13 Camp Street) on Saturday, June 16. You see, by now the fruit trees we need to prune have nuded up, making it a whole lot easier to give them a wee haircut, which will benefit the tree, maximising fruit production in the warmer months. Gail will start the session at the centre then the group will move on to Rea Lands park to get hands on with the trees. BYO lunch and secateurs. The session cost is $22. Roaring fires

or the roaring ‘20s LOOKING for a way to keep warm this winter? Well other than plonking yourself on top of a stoked up Ned Kelly, we suggest you go dancing… perhaps at a fancy ball? Oh look here, on Saturday June 30, there just happens to be a ball with dancing right here in Daylesford… coincidence? No, each year the ladies at Club 30 host the fabulous Black and White Ball at The Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street). It’s a good excuse to frock up, dust off the dancing shoes all the while raising funds for a worthy cause. Funds are always raised for different organisations, this year it’s for Daylesford Palliative Care Unit and Daylesford Kindergarten Early Learning Program. This year the B&W is themed ‘a touch of pink from the roaring ‘20s’, good excuse to glam up and dance the night away to the Daylesford Swing Band after enjoying a four course dinner. Hug

it Out WHEN gold was discovered in the mid 1800s, every man and his dog rushed to this area hoping to stumble over a fortune. Everything in the path of those infected with ‘Gold Fever’ was completely obliterated. The great forests of the region were wiped off the map, and only a few special remnant trees remain. One such beauty stands proud in Guildford. The Big Tree (as its genius nickname implies) is indeed big. And Old. It is dated to around 500 years, and is a stunning River Red Gum specimen with a circumference of ELEVEN METRES, and a height of 37 metres. This incredible giant has been quietly minding its own business hosting animals and birds, since around the 1500s (think about that… sheesh!) The Big Tree is on the corner of Fryer & Ballarat Streets. It’s well sign posted, so if you’re driving through Guildford go and give it a hug. kd

THE 80s. If you were there your hair is probably still recovering from crimper burns. If you weren’t there don’t worry (be happy). The 80s are being revisited in a massive way, with Raybans and fluoro currently de rigueur. And now, a major part of living in Australia in the 80s is venturing to Castlemaine, with The Absolutely 80s show hitting The Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves Street) for a one night orgy of 80s music awesomeness. (BYO legwarmers, ra-ra skirts and hypercolour t-shirts). Absolutely 80s was born from the success of the Countdown Spectacular shows that toured in recent times, and features the front men from three of the biggest Australian bands of the 80s: Brian Mannix (Uncanny X-men) Scott Carne (Kids in the Kitchen) and Dale Ryder (Boom Crash Opera) performing all your fave hits from those tapes that were eaten by your Walkman and 12 inch vinyl albums you’ve got stashed in the shed. Uncanny X-Men sold over half a million copies of their albums, and Brian rocked his spandex tights with the best of them performing countless gigs across the land. Their biggest single ’50 Years’ will be rolled out at high school reunions for generations to come. Kids in the Kitchen were responsible for Australia’s foray into the New Romantic music scene with 14 year old girls swooning over Scott and his billowy white t-shirt collection. Dale Ryder and Boom Crash Opera provided a cool pop/rock backdrop to an over-permed music scene filling venues with fans who knew that these here are (indeed) crazy times. So if you lived through the 80s and the walls of your old bedroom are still pocked with blutac scars from the posters of these bands, or if you’re just wondering what all the fuss is about...block out Saturday, June 30, in your diary (Show starts at 8pm, but it will take you all day to tease your hair and get your blue eyeliner right.) Tickets are $35, book through the Theatre Royal. For bookings call: 5472 1196 or visit: theatreroyal.info.

Which came first -

the chicken or the wine?

lost the guide to where to find it

ONCE upon a time in a nearby happy land, happy chooks grazed in a chemical free, holistically balanced meadow and as the winemaker’s harvest was complete, the chef stoked the wood fire for a delicious roast chicken with truffles and settled down with the farmer and the winemaker to await their guests… and if you play your cards right, you can be that guest at such a fabulous feast! As part of the state-wide campaign led by Melbourne Food and Wine: ‘Put Victoria on your table’ encourages you to eat and drink where you live. And so the story goes: the winemakers at Ellender Estate, the chef at Monsieur Pierre and the farmer at Yapunyah Meadow Grazed Chickens invite you to be a part of the story, ‘The Chicken, the Truffle and the Grape’ for lunch on Saturday June 23 or Sunday, June 24. Cost $65.00 includes a glass of “Ellender” Sparkling on arrival. Time: 12.30 to 4pm. Bookings: ellenderwines.com.au.

Right your soul

when Demi sings her feelings THE VOICE of eighteen-year-old local songstress, Demi Louise, has a sound belying her young age. The sound is that of a much older, more experienced soulful diva, and she only started in the biz just two years ago. Demi is a self-confessed self starter, having taught herself to sing, song-write and play guitar. She confesses “I don’t know much about music, I just like sounds”…and after a few open mic nights she quickly took to the stage solo, and now we all like her sounds too. Head to The Cosmopolitan Hotel (Cnr Cosmo Road High Street, Trentham) on Sunday, June 10, for some mellow acoustics (both covers and originals) from the young lady who “writes her soul and sings her feelings”.
