Nana’s red cardy too! BY NOW the entire world is probably aware that lost hearts coffee. It’s scribbled on many a wall and may have been etched onto a tree trunk. Yep we live on it. And this month we found an extra special companion for our favourite brew. The Vintage Baker bickie! Delving into these bickies is like a portal to a past world, a world before coffee existed but dunking a sneaky biscuit into Nan’s tea was your and her secret. Divine. So now, lost also hearts the following ‘Vintage Baker’ collections: Nana’s Red Cardigans (think jam drops), Muddy Gumboots (think Kingstons), Too Tough for Nana’s Falsies (Gingernut) and Grandma’s Fancy Biscuit Jar (Montecarlo) to be paired with said coffee, (of course). The Vintage Baker is a clever little cookie who knew exactly what she was doing when conjuring up her childhood memories and packaging them up to share with the world. ...whilst we drop a few names (& drool) YOU know you’ve died and gone to foodie-heaven when Kazuki Tsuya, Michael de Jong and Christian Reuther are making your lunch. Glenlyon is just ten minutes drive northeast of Daylesford, and home, once again, to the annual foodie celebration, The World’s Longest Lunch, (as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival). On Friday, March 2, 30 locations across regional Victoria will host long, extravagant, gourmet lunches, served up by some of the most talented chefs in the state. Being that Glenlyon is in the heart of foodie paradise, Glenlyon’s table will overflow with deliciousness delivered by our most celebrated chefs, who will bring to the table passionately plated morsels of yum, matched with local vignerons’ finest vintages. Canapés (from Peppers Mineral Springs Retreat) will be served for starters at the Old Glenlyon General Store, and whilst you’re enjoying a Chanters Ridge Vineyard Macedon Sparkling with your besties, (cheers), crisp linen will be straightened and gleaming cutlery set out on the long tables under the shade of the magnificent elm trees outside the Glenlyon Shire Hall (Barkly Street). You’re then invited to wander up and take your place at the long tables for a Japanese inspired entree from Kazuki Tsuya (of Kazuki’s at the Raglan) matched with a Pinot Grigio from Fontanella Wines and Sailors Falls Estate. The main course will be sourced from the best of the region’s produce and crafted into an elegant meal, perfectly paired with wines from Ellender Estate and Passing Clouds. Dessert by Christian Reuther (of Ego’s Culinaria and Ego Cakes & Catering) promises to be exceptional, and will be matched with a Gewürztraminer Auslese from Birthday Villa at Malmsbury. If it rains, we still eat (phew!), inside marquees adjacent to the historic hall. Tickets are $120, and proceeds go to the Glenlyon CFA Fire Station Building Project and Glenlyon Progress Association. Write off the day, the longest lunch runs from 12 ‘til 4pm. There’ll be live music, dancing, door prizes, platters of delicious morsels and that warm and fuzzy feeling you get when helping the local community (as well as that warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you know there’s a full bar.) Somewhere over the Rainbow HAVE you seen a few rainbow flags waving around town? A few more than usual? Wondering what’s going on? Well incase you’ve been living under a rock, (a really big rock… perhaps even Hanging Rock,) it’s ChillOut! The Annual ChillOut Festival is the biggest and longestrunning Country Queer Pride event in regional Australia and the largest festival held in the Hepburn Shire. Hoorah! Born of humble beginnings - ChillOut started as a networking lunch for local Gay and Lesbian business peeps - However, the GLBTQI grape-vine is a swift growing one, and it wasn’t long before our little lunch became a full blown four day festival! – But despite the hype (ChillOut by name and ChillOut by nature), there’s something about the festival’s name that rings true. Even though the event, that brings tens of thousands to the region to party, ChillOut still remains a relaxed, fun, down to earth celebration of community and pride for the local and wider GLBTQI community. Held on the Labour Day long weekend, (this year Friday, March 9, - Monday March 12), ChillOut is jam packed with celebrations, dancing and dance parties, music, a carnival day, a street parade, events, art, food, performances, comedy, outdoor activities, pampering, workshops and more. Each year ChillOut raises money for a worthy cause, over $180,000 has been donated to various charities over the years, and this year ChillOut is supporting the Hepburn Shire SES Unit, to help them purchase vital equipment. It’s a colourful, crazy, fun event, each year is themed, and this year’s theme is ‘Pirates.Recapturing the Pearls.’ It just wouldn’t be a Queer pride parade without the Dykes on Bikes leading the way – closely followed by all manner of floats, marching boys, drag queens lounging in convertibles, classic cars, cheer leaders, clowns and of course PIRATES! Look out for the very special Visitor Information Centre volunteers’ float - always outrageously spectacular. Roll Up Roll Up! WHO doesn’t love a Carnival? Huh?! Name one person? – See we knew you couldn’t do it! A favourite annual event - for locals and visitors to the region - Carnival Day is a highlight on the ChillOut calendar. So make sure you circle Sunday, March 11, with a glittery pen, Carnival Day is one great big heeeuge par-tay for absolutely everyone, including your furry four legged friends. (Oh yes. The furry children are invited to enter the carnival dog show for some pretty spesh prizes!) You might know him as Riff Raff from the most recent seasons of Rocky Horror, or you might know him because he’s a massive cabaret star, or you might know him because he has collected a Helpman Award for being such a fine stage actor and has worked around the globe with renown theatre companies. Or you might just know him because he is a freakin superstar and his voice will blow your mind. (yep, that last one). Oooo, what a treat to see him in Daylesford for ChillOut! A FARMER’S life can be a lonely one, out on the tractor all day, nothing to talk to but the birds and potatoes. A farmer’s mind can get to wandering. One such farmer thought it’d be a grand idea to discover how much weight his tractor could pull, and thus, the international competitive sport of Tractor Pulling was born. This region quite enjoys the odd tractor pull, and Sunday, March 11, Bullarto is hosting their annual Tractor Pull event. See vintage and classic tractors and vehicles and demos galore. THE global day of celebrations for the political, economic and social achievement of women is March 8, and is aptly named International Women’s Day. It’s been a celebration of sorts all over the world for over a hundred years and places like Bulgaria, China, Vietnam and Russia, take it as a national holiday. (hmmm, c’mon Aussie c’mon??...) The Hepburn Shire launched the Honour Roll in 2005 on IWD to celebrate the women of the Shire whose contribution, courage and example have led to significant social change for women. The Honour Roll inductees will be announced at a Civic Reception at the Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) this year on Thursday, March 8 from 5pm. Community members all welcome. All this creativity and craftiness makes for pretty villages, and the creatively gifted villagers enjoy sharing their beautiful handmade wares with the world. Trentham town is a home-made-hot spot. Trentham is so overflowing with lovingly crafted wares, they had to create a market to sell it all – thus The Trenthamade Market was born. Trenthamade is held on the third Saturday of each month. This month it’s Saturday, March 17, 9am ‘til 1:30pm. Peruse handknits, soaps, wooden toys, greeting cards, garden ornaments, children’s and toddlers’ clothes, cushions and more. OUTDOOR festivals in Victoria are rife. Name a natural feature and it’s guaranteed that someone will be waving a guitar around in front of it. There are plains, falls, paddocks (Mooing or Meredithing), and Rocks (of the Hanging and Pyramid varieties) of the mega-fest variety. No wonder we suffer festival fatigue, it’s hard work being cool enough (and rich enough) to see them all! Fear not jaded festival folk… the sweet township of Myrniong have a Recreation Reserve and a PA system and they’re not afraid to use them. You are hereby cordially invited to the family friendly, country cool, Myrniong Music in the Park. Nestled in the picturesque Pentland Hills, the wee hamlet of Myrniong is country life as it should be; a close knit community, the local pub, old buildings and a rec reserve just begging for a stage a few guitars (to wave around), and an audience. Music in the Park is an annual event and will be held on Saturday March 17, from 2pm. BYO picnic blanket, chairs or whatever makes you comfy, and pull up a patch of grass. The Myrniong Hall Committee will be turning snags on the barbie, and the local organic pig farmer will be roasting up a storm, serving delicious organic roast pork rolls. There’ll be other food, as well as coffee, local wineries serving their latest vintages, ice cream, slushies and lollies for the kiddies… (But we’re sure if you ask nicely you can probably have some lollies too). Now to the stage and guitars bit… Of course there’ll be music all day. Myrniong has more than their fair share of young local talent, and they’ll be first to the stage, followed by Hollow Everdaze, the Murlocs, along with Demi Louise, Liam Jarrod and Sally Baulch. 60s cover band The Substitutes are expected on stage around 9pm. FROM the view point of an ex-distance runner, sprinters are fascinating creatures. One cannot quite comprehend the training and preparation that goes into an event that is over in under 12 seconds, (or 9.58 if you’re really freaking amazing – nice one Usain Bolt!) when one is accustomed to running for hours on end. Sweat not, dear readers as you will neither need to sprint nor slog it out this month (unless you are so inclined). You can relish in being a mere spectator as the finest sprinters around hit Shepherds Flat on Sunday, March 25, for the Daylesford Gift. The gift is the last lead up event to the prestigious Stawell Gift and is part of the ‘Run for the Willow Carnival’ at Cricket Willow (355 Hepburn-Newstead Rd, Shepherds Flat). It’s for a good cause too, they raise funds for Camp Quality (campquality.org.au) and since its 2005 inception, the carnival has raised over $15,000. They’ve also taken it a step back in time this year with a change in distance to the 100 yard sprint. If you’re yawning at the thought of sitting sideline, you’re in luck as there’s also a full program of Victorian Athletic League events from 60 metres to 2,000 metres, with a new novelty event ‘the footballers’ relay’, plus a 3.2km cross country run for those who wish to get a bit more bang for their buck (or sweat for their efforts). The Orchestra’s in town

THE Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra will once again grace the Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) with its presence when they present The Pastoral Fantasy on Sunday March 25 at 2pm. It will include Rossini’s Overture: William Tell, Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No 2 and Beethoven’s Symphony No 6 Pastoral. The 60 to 70 piece orchestra is no stranger to these parts, having performed on many occasions in the past, but the founder’s heritage also lay in Hepburn Springs and indeed Zelman cottage in Seventh Street was once owned by the late conductor Alberto Zelman’s brother. The full symphonic ensemble will perform under the baton of conductor Mark Shiell with world renown clarinet soloist David Griffiths. Tickets are $25 adult, $20 concession and $5 student. CeCoDe is a unique art and design studio, and exhibition space. Little sister to Woodend’s Benchmark Collective (97A High Street Woodend), CeCoDe Workroom specialises in prints, small pieces and works on paper. Alongside the prints and illustrations you’ll find an eclectic mix of quirky and wonderful design classics, both battered industrial and shiny new bits and bobs from around the world. They also stock art materials, paper products, art and design books, a selection of Aesop products, a few furniture pieces worthy of gallery status, even designer lighting. And ohh yes… you like that tall piece of metal drawer-ed industria housing their floor stock? You can even buy it too. CeCoDe Workroom has an emphasis on the graphic arts and holds regular exhibitions, predominantly of works on paper. The next exhibition to be held at CeCoDe will be Jeff Raglus, Urban Primitive. Jeff managed to fail art in high school, yet somehow made his way to the forefront of graphic arts in Australia, designing for Mambo for most of the 90s, where he honed his graphic ‘Urban-Primitive-Surf-Pop’ style. For a surfie bloke who failed art, he has done more than okay, holding extremely popular sell-out exhibitions all around Australia. The Urban Primitive show will be a return to what he loves doing best. The exhibition will be held at CeCoDe Workroom (2 - 1 Camp Street, Daylesford) Friday, March 30, till Monday, April 23. Nothing shifty about Shooglenifty

GENRE defying, logic defying, name defying Scottish/Aussie lads Shooglenifty are pretty much everything except gravity defying… although we’d like to see them try. Shooglenifty’s music is an absolute hybrid of genres with roots set firmly in traditional Scottish folk, their music has been described as acid croft, and even made up words like hypnofolkadeliaamient-trance…. with banjos. Wizards of improvisation they blend fiddle, mandolin, banjo, percussion, guitar and bass to create such a rhythmic energy you’ll unable to sit still. Even Nelson Mandela and Emperor Akihito of Japan were tapping along when they played for them… (we’re sure!) So best you wear your dancing shoes because resistance is useless. Don’t stop reading now because it all sounds too hard, the best bit of all here is you need do nought. Nothing, just switch off; no lights, no tv, and no appliances, okay sure, there is heaps more you can do, but it’s a pretty easy start (and peaceful too). So, people unite to protect the planet on March 31 and switch off for an hour at 8:30pm. We reckon it’s a good excuse to go phone free too, especially when phones these days are so much more than just a device to talk on. Welcome Art Yarramunua NO DOUBT about it, this region is home to some talented folk. There are more artists per square centimetre in this town than anywhere else in the known universe. (Okay, don’t quote us)... There are galleries upon galleries hung with exceptional works by accomplished and talented local artists. You’ll find sculpture, printed works, paintings, photography, ceramic art, illustrations, attention commanding large scale pieces, and intricate works in miniature, from the most conceptually abstract pieces, to photorealism, the region’s artists cover a lot of genres, (and walls). And now we welcome the first exclusively Indigenous gallery to the region. Art Yarramunua (76 Vincent St Daylesford). Run by Yarramunua and Rachael, they showcase their own beautiful works as well as paintings, carvings and artefacts created by friends and family from Indigenous communities from all over Australia, including works depicting Dja Dja Country (that’s here folks)! Yarramunua’s Great Great Grandfather John Charles was one of the last tribal people to leave the land here, so Yarramunua’s return to Dja Dja, and the opening of the gallery is a significant one, not only as a platform to showcase some of the nation’s most outstanding contemporary Indigenous works, but also as a return to country (of sorts) for Yarra. As well as being one of very few Victorian Indigenous artists, (he also runs another gallery at 500 Collins Street Melbourne), Yarramunua is also one of Australia’s most accomplished musicians, playing didgeridoo alongside Stevie Wonder, Van Halen, Prince, AC/DC and Eminem. And if that’s not enough on the resume, you might also recognise him from film, stage and screen. Yup! He’s a busy boy! With his vast cultural awareness, Yarramunua is well regarded as one of Australia’s best at each of his many talents. And if you’re here in Dja Dja Country, you might just be lucky enough to see him with Rachael, brush in hand, painting on the floor at their new gallery in Daylesford.
