Generally speaking we think you’re super
THE Glenlyon General Store is frankly, poorly named. Just as a supermarket isn’t exactly super, there’s not much about the Glenlyon General Store that is, well… ‘general’. Stocking locally grown fresh produce and gourmet treats on the shelves, a fab evolving café menu, local wines and great coffee, the General Store also serves up live music each Friday night. (See, much more super than general we think!) Friday, March 1, Skip Sail and the Rust Brothers will ease you into the weekend (and new month, pinch and a punch) with some good ol’ traditional blues and old timey fiddletunes, from the 1920s and 30s. Skip Sail and the Rust brothers play a bit of fiddle, banjo, mandolin and guitar – acoustic awesomeness bringing a huge fun vibe for the weekend that lies ahead. The Glenlyon General Store (63 Barkly Street) hosts live music each Friday night 6–8pm. With happy hour from 5-6pm. For more info call the store: 5348 7922.

wine, food and song
ELLENDER Estate Winery is making hay whilst the sun shines… well actually, they don’t make hay, that’s ridiculous. They make wine. Fine ultra-cool climate varietals to be exact… But you get what we’re saying. They’re busy. Busy with a full calendar of wine, food and song. March is a month of merriment at the winery, starting Saturday, March 2, with the Daylesford Swing Band performing 5 ‘til 8pm. Bring a picnic blanket and kick back as the music drifts over the lake at sunset. Tickets are $25, this includes a picnic hamper and drinks at cellar door prices. Ellender’s celebrates the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival at their restaurant L’Osteria with an express menu: two courses, wine and coffee, $40pp. (Open 12:30-3:30pm weekends and public holidays, March 2 – 17). The winery is at 260 Green Gully Road Glenlyon. For more info on Easter opening hours, and bookings for all events call Jenny on: 5348 7785.

Long live
lost the guide to where to find it
live music! LAST year a few good musically minded folk in down town Kyneton decided they’d throw a few bands together and call it a music festival. And hot damn if it wasn’t a hee-uuge success! So this year they’re doing it again. The Kyneton Music Festival will be held Friday, March 1 ‘til Sunday, March 3. It’s going to be a super fest with more than 40 reallyquite-actually-completely-awesome local bands and artists performing, hosting workshops and belting out tunes for young and old. There will be performances by local sisters Stonefield, (in case you didn’t know, Stonefield won Triple J Unearthed a couple of years ago, one thing lead to another – as things do - and they have subsequently performed at Glastonbury – (yup), the Roxy in LA, and supported the likes of the Kaiser Chiefs, the Foo Fighters and Cold Chisel on stages a looong way from home… i.e.: the paddocks out the back of the Macedon Ranges). On Friday, March 1, Stonefield will share the story of the road to their success with a panel of music industry peeps, and together they will discuss how to take your music to a wider audience. This free workshop at the Kyneton Town Hall is a fab opportunity for local bands and artists to sus out from the professionals, how to take the next step! (4pm-6pm). Across the weekend at venues all over town check out Mick Thomas and the Roving Commission, the Rambin’ Van Walker Band, The Perch Creek Family Jugband, Cherrywood, the Resignators, Liz Frencham, Cyndi Boste, Freya Hollick, the Dead Salesmen Duo and plenty more of the live stuff, on stages everywhere. On Sunday, March 3, 10am – 11am, Tiny Dancers will be held at Stockroom (98 Piper St) a super-fun kiddie disco with bubbles balloons and dancing tunes especially for babies toddlers and kids. A weekend pass to all events is just $45. (40+ bands for $45!! holy moly… do the maths on that! We smell a bargain.) For the full list of bands and events across the weekend and ticket booking info go to: kynetonmusicfestival.com.au or find them on Facebook for up to the minute details!

happy to be MAD MAD. This three letter word has several definitions depending what generation you’re from: awesome, crazy or grumpy. It also means a lot of lycra, and much sweat, tears, and oh-so-sore thighs if you choose to go MAD in Woodend on Sunday, March 3. MAD is actually an acronym for Melbourne Autumn Day and it’s a hugely popular bike ride that happens to be celebrating its 30th birthday this year, (making it Victoria’s longest running amateur cycling event). There are four events to choose from: a 35km familyfriendly road cruise, a 50 km road ride, (not so friendly) a truly MAD 105km road challenge that takes you over the top of Mt Macedon (pretty sure that’s when MAD means crazy/ grumpy) and a 60km MTB ride through the Wombat State Forest. All rides start from Buffalo Sports Stadium Tylden Road, Woodend. Start time is 8am – 9:30am. For all the entry details and more info go to: mbtc.org.au/mad-ride.
International Women’s Day
lost the guide to where to find it
recognition and respect for all
INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day is observed around the globe on March 8 each year. This celebration of recognition and respect for women has been held for over 100 years. In some countries there is even a public holiday held on this day, (and in some countries that holiday is ONLY for women, hello China, Madagascar, Nepal and Macedonia)! In Daylesford we don’t get the day off, but it does lead into a long weekend, and celebrations begin early. On the eve of International Women’s Day special guest speaker: former Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police, Christine Nixon will be inducting courageous and exemplary women from the Hepburn Shire to the International Women’s Day Honour Roll. (Thursday, March 7, from 5pm) Hear Christine speak and be inspired by the contributions made by outstanding women within our community. For more information and to RSVP call Lynne Sheedy 5321 6423.

Chill out and proud
lost the guide to where to find it
get your rainbow on
CHILLOUT is the biggest and longest running GLBTI pride event in regional Australia, and it happens right here every year on the March long weekend. It is a celebration of love and pride, and there is soooo much crammed into the program this year that they almost have to change the name from ChillOut to FlatOut. (No, rest assured, with long lunches, day spa packages, high teas, late checkouts, bush walks and a long weekend away from it all, there’s still time to partake in a little chilling out between dancing, roller derbying, horse riding, comedy, drag, bands, parades, carnival day and - oh you get the idea... let’s face it, it’s a verrry large and awesome weekend!) Each year ChillOut raises money for a worthy cause, this year it’s the Daylesford and District Food and Aid group. This very spesh bunch of volunteers help between 200-300 local people each week. ChillOut aims to raise funds to help them purchase a much needed hot food van, so dig deep! The major fundraising event is the Slowest Lunch at Sault Restaurant (2349 Ballan-Daylesford Road). The event (Friday, March 8, 12:30 – 4:30pm) will be hosted by Dolly Diamond, and features a silent auction, (although with Dolly hosting it’ll hardly be silent) and a long and luscious three course feast. Tickets $130pp. All the fave events return this year with Cream at the Old Hep is shaping up as THE women’s event on the program, with Monique Brumby, Emma Wall, Sheilas of the Seventies (feat Rebecca Barnard) and the Shambelles all playing, 4pm ‘til waaay late. Hello, HUGE! (And if you can’t wait until 4, there’s always pre-cream cocktails at the Hepburn Pavilion café - slightly genius). Of course other fave ChillOut events include the Sunday night Dance Party at the Daylesford Town Hall, the famous Street Parade (line Vincent Street from 10am Sunday, March 10, for a 10:30 start. Carnival Day at Victoria Park (also on Sunday) is a celebration of family, fun, food and dodgem cars. The entire program is online chilloutfestival.com.au. Book tickets through the website. 10

CHILLOUT is a great time to feed your soul with a bit of live music. In every corner of town there’ll be a performer with a mic, (some in glitter, some in leather, some in both) and a tune to belt out to an appreciative audience. If you so feel like being a member of one such audience and doing a bit of live music appreciation, Horvat’s Wine Bar (6 Howe St Daylesford) is one such venue pumping out the tunes all long weekend. On Friday, March 8, Jade Leonard will take to the stage. Now Jade, as you might well know, is well regarded for her sultry jazz tinged style, however, Jade has just released a supercute-bubble-gum-pop song, entitled Funny Bunny (written for her boss, drag queen Kaye Sera) shhh, what was that? Did we hear the dancefloor calling?? Jade Leonard will perform Funny Bunny and a fun mix of fave tunes at Horvat’s ‘til the wee hours. Free Entry. For more info call Horvat’s: 5348 2333.

We’re a bit keen
lost the guide to where to find it
on quinoa
DAYLESFORD has long been recognised as a centre for alternate lifestyles and well… a bit of a hippy haven. Guess what peeps, those hippies were onto something! When quinoa and raw juice shows up on a pub menu, you know the health revolution has gone global. And the revolution is, quite frankly, delicious. Daylesford Healthfood and Organics is a new store at 27 Albert Street. They stock a completely glorious range of fresh healthy food, products, and supplements. Including fresh organic fruit and veg. You should see their happy dirty carrots, massive grapes, big bursty plums and perfect peaches – seriously they make you feel a bit healthier just looking at them, (and they’re not ridiculously overpriced = healthier wallet too). The fruit and veg is delivered twice a week, so nothing’s wilty and sad looking, it’s all picked, plucked and dug fresh. And speaking of fresh and yum, holy moly, the café within the store creates big healthy salad rolls, salads, light meals, as well as raw, vegan and some gluten free treats. (rumour has it the raw vegan cheesecake is smashing!) They serve lunch six days a week, (closed Sundays) and offer takeaway too. There’s a lovely story in their dairy fridge as well. They stock Elgaar Dairy products. The happy cows (on the luscious ethical dairy farm in Tassie) are milked on a Wednesday. The milk is (glass) bottled and ferried to the mainland on the same day, and it’s in the fridge at Daylesford Healthfood and Organics the next morning. Lovely full cream milk with the cream floating on top. (They also stock Elgaar butter, cheese and yoghurt. Yummo). Donna and Laura take orders for Zeally Bay sourdough as well (you’ll need some Elgaar butter to go with that). The shelves are stocked with local beauty products and other popular skin treats like MooGoo and Dr Bronner’s. They also stock Fusion vitamins, minerals, and health tonics and of course, all the bulk legumes, cereals and seeds and all that healthy hippy stuff, well we are in Daylesford after all… Open Mon–Wed 9am-5pm, Thurs-Fri 9am–5:30pm and Sat 9am-4pm. Phone 5348 1502. 14
Giddy up
gourmet Style YOU’RE not expected to be a Melbourne cup winning jockey, nor a wild brumby wrangler to be able to enjoy a day out horse riding with friends. As part of the ChillOut festival, local business Hepburn Lagoon Trail Rides are saddling up their happy horsies for two gourmet horse trail rides. Mount your trusty steed and head for the hills, (or the forest, or a bit of both) and meander along for a couple of hours ‘til you reach your barn destination for a delish lunch or dinner. Friday, March 8, is an evening ride (departing at 6pm) This ride is $120pp and concludes with a BBQ dinner. Saturday, March 9, the trail ride plods off at 11am and returns to the barn by 1ish for lunch. (Saturday’s ride is $80pp). Come a little early to meet your horse and get ready to ride. They cater for all levels of experience, from beginners to Damien Oliver. For more info go to: hepburnlagoonrides.com.au or call 0408 059 125. Book at: chilloutfestival.com.au.
High time

for high tea
IS THERE anything more enticing than a plate of sandwiches someone else has made? Well the short answer is yes. Towered plates of mini cakes, treats, petite savouries (including dainty lil’ sandwiches), pots of tea, coffee, icy jugs of Pimms and bubbly glasses of crisp G&T with your fave peeps pretty much tops a round of sandwiches. High Tea on Camp is an indulgent afternoon held during ChillOut at the Albert Guest House (12 Camp Street, Daylesford). Gather friends and laze an afternoon away over a delicious morsel or 45. Held 3pm ’til 5pm Saturday, March 9, the afternoon is a great way to erm, chill out between ChillOut events. If you don’t think a Pimms and a macaron will do the job to relax you, why not book a massage, facial, or day spa treatment at the guest house, (oh yes, they do that too). High Tea is $30pp (or $25pp for groups of 4 or more) for more info call 5348 4337 or go to chilloutfestival.com.au

So good
it’s Badwi ZOE BADWI has probably had that headline foisted upon her all her life. But it’s justifiable ‘cause Ms Badwi not only had the honour of singing the official Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras anthem this year, (‘Torches’- ermagerd, sooo fabulous!) but she’s also gracing us with her pop goddess presence, playing Milk & 2 Sugars Saturday, March 9, at Buffalo Girls Coffee Bar (4c Duke Street, Daylesford). See… SO GOOD!! The wee stage will barely be able to contain the dance anthems with Zoe, DJs MellyMel, Patsan and Lady Jnr ensuring serious dancefloor craziness ‘til way late. Zoe is presented by Finlay Street and Park Lane Entertainment, (who, incidentally, are totally feeling the love by scoring new sponsor Ballarat Honda. Which means they can do rad stuff like this. Yay). Tickets are limited and at $65 selling like hotpants. Snap yours up at St. Mel Cyclery, Buffalo Girls, or at finlaystreetandparklaneentertainment.blogspot.com.au

Roller Derby is not for the faint of heart, nor weak of knee. And it also helps if you’re good at staying upright. As part of the ChillOut festival, the Ballarat Roller Derby League is hosting a Roller Derby bout between fierce rivals the Libertines and the Gold Diggers. The bout will be held at the Daylesford ARC (Daylesford High School, Smith Street), Saturday, March 9, 2pm – 4pm. It promises to be a hard and fast match with heaps of thrills, spills, stacks and bumps, with live music and a big crowd watching the teams go ‘round and ‘round. Tickets can be bought online ($10 adults $5 kids, under 5s free). If you’re uninitiated in the ways of Derby, beware… it’s loud, fast, fun and you might find yourself intoxicated by the speed and adrenalin, and be signed up as ‘fresh meat’ (a roller derby newbie) if you’re not careful. Mwah ha haaa! Info go to: brdl.com.au or buy tix at: chilloutfestival.com.au.

bush dancing fun REMEMBER school bush dances? Heel and toe and do-sido? Remember scuffing up the carpet in the multi-purpose room, charging off static electricity and zapping your partner, whilst some bearded dad played the lagerphone and called out the dance on a squeaky PA? (Or was that just us?) Guess what… school bush dances still exist! Bullarto Primary School is hosting a bush dance at the Bullarto Hall (South Bullarto Road) Sunday, March 10, to which you are cordially invited. (A real bush dance for a real bush school! Brilliant!) There will be no lagerphone, (alas) instead, Rickety Bridge will be playing, with their collection of incredible instruments and toe tappin’ boot scootin’ tunes. The fun begins at 6:30pm with a BBQ, dancing starts at 7, there’ll be prizes for best dressed in the bush theme. Tix $15 adult, $5 kids, $35 families. Call the school for info: 5348 5559. All proceeds to the Bullarto Primary Kitchen Garden project.

ON ARRIVAL to this region you’re greeted with boutique shopping, schmancy restaurants, award winning coffee and scrubbed designer families wearing $200 gumboots. Well we’re here to tell you, just because we like it like that, it doesn’t mean we’re not country baby, and what could be more country than a good ol’ fashioned tractor pull. The 19th annual Bullarto Tractor Pull will be held Sunday, March 10, at the Bullarto Hall and Railway Grounds. (South Bullarto Rd). Of course there will be oodles of tractors pulling big heavy things, loads of old machinery and farm gear as well as restored classic vintage vehicles. Best leave the designer wellies at home, there’ll be sheep shearing events, an ‘against the clock’ wood chop, and a ‘ladies only’ mobile phone throwing comp, (FYI don’t throw your new iPhone 5, the 3s is much more aerodynamic), as well as bands and proper country fun for all. More info call Len Orr: 5348 5555.

Long lunch?
lost the guide to where to find it
don’t mind if we do THE APPEAL of the long lunch is universal. The very thought of lazing away a sunny afternoon grazing on fine food (dutifully crafted by talented chefs), rolling a local Pinot around in your Reidel and laughing heartily with friends is decadent, indulgent and (speaking for ourselves) happens oh too rarely (*sniff*). The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival hosts the annual World’s Longest Lunch event in locations throughout metropolitan Melbourne and all over regional Victoria. This year the longest lunch is to be held Friday, March 15, and in our neck of the woods, we’ll be lunching at the Hepburn Reserve, Hepburn Springs. Our longest lunch will be set at a verrrrry long table (can’t have a the world’s longest lunch without a long linen-draped table now can you?) under the beautiful old trees at the springs reserve, near the historic Pavilion Café. Yep. Just a little bit stunning. The lunch is a not-for-profit fundraising event, to raise vital funds for neighbourhood houses across the Hepburn Shire: to provide hospitality and job skills training for the next generation of uber-awesome hospitality kids. (Our region has a reputation as being a mecca for fine food and hospitality… why not lunch away the afternoon in the spirit of keeping it that way! Like what we did there? ...any excuse huh?) Your afternoon begins at midday with canapés whilst you wander the springs to sample the waters. Then your longest lunch will be served. Indulge in four courses of elegantly presented fine local produce, matched with the latest vintages from the wonderful cool climate wineries nearby. The longest lunch concludes at 4pm (Could this get any better? We’d say that’s just in time for Friday afternoon drinks, yes?) Places are $125 per person, and bookings are essential. (For online ticket purchases go to: trybooking.com/CELY ) For more information visit melbournefoodandwine.com.au or call Bettina Ralph: 0423 630 674.

Shiny rusty dusty trusty old things in Clunes
CLUNES is an old town. Beautifully fractured buildings peeling with paint (and time) line the main street. Standing in Fraser Street it’s not hard to blur your eyes and imagine a bit of olden-days action, complete with horses, moustachioed gentlemen in hats and resplendent ladies tucked under parasols. Clunes wears its heritage well, which makes it the perfect town to host all things ye-olde. The Historic Vehicle Show, (Sunday, March 10) has become one such annual event on the Clunes calendar. The Ballarat branch of the Historic Commercial Vehicle Club of Australia, gathers their enthusiastic mob of old vehicle lovers and collectors, to roll out their old wheels once a year, at the Clunes Showgrounds (Victoria Street). This year there’ll be loads of vintage and classic vehicles, engines and machinery on display. Some shiny, some rusty, all very well loved. The show is open 9am ‘til 4pm. Entry $5, kids free.

OUR Kylie. You know who we’re talking about right? Well, when Our Kylie (note: capital letters due to importance of person) says the best Kylie tribute show is 100% Kylie that’s the very pinnacle of compliments right there. The 100% Kylie show has toured internationally wowing audiences (including Our Kylie’s family) just about everywhere. We’re talking glitter, costumes, feathers and dancing boys onstage feeding a hands-in-the-air pumping dancefloor everywhere she goes. And guess who’s playing Milk & 2 Sugars (at Buffalo Girls Coffee Bar, 4c Duke St Daylesford?) Yup. 100%. (Can you handle it?) This awesome Kylie tribute show (presented by Finlay Street and Park Lane Entertainment) will be held Sunday, March 10, (you get to sleep in Monday, it’s ok) Tickets are strictly limited and are $65. Step up to the mic
you know you want to… DON’T we love to have our opinion heard? Everyone wants to chip in their two cents worth and be listened to. Even whilst sitting on the loo you can still pump out your pointed opinion to the whole wide world in 140 characters. (C’mon, we know you do it)… but really, who’s paying attention to your ‘like’ on Facey or your cleverly worded tweet? If you’re off to the very excellent Castlemaine State Festival (Friday, March 15, ‘til Sunday, March 24,) ABC local radio (Central Victoria) wants to hear your opinion… no, really! Visit the festival and take a workshop on writing a radio review. Script up your thoughts on what you’ve seen at the festival and you could get the chance to voice your carefully considered opinion on the wireless. (Hello world). The workshop is free and bookings are essential. For more information or to book call Jane Curtis: 5440 1739, or email curtis.jane@abc.net.au

GLENLYON is a tiny village with a strong community just a few klicks out of Daylesford. The beautiful tree lined Avenue of Honour leads to the General Store (which serves up delicious bits), and the old Shire Hall hosts spesh exhibitions and local events. Saturday, March 16, is the Glenlyon Community day. The village market will be held from 9am at the Hall, (morning tea will be served). At 10:30 Ballarat CFA’s Vegetation Manager will talk about planting gardens in bushfire prone areas. Bring your gardening gloves and roll up your sleeves at 11am to help plant the new garden at the new CFA block. Join in the free BBQ picnic from 1pm outside the hall. (RSVP to Joy on 5348 7542 if you can make it). Then take a guided walk along the Loddon River (2:15-2:45pm) to check out the Landcare Biolink area, and share the community love for your beautiful part of the world. Can’t see the arts
lost the guide to where to find it
for the trees…
THE term ‘tree change’ conjures images of living in shingled tree houses and swinging from Tarzan ropes to visit your neighbours. Now, whilst it’s no secret that Castlemaine has welcomed many new residents fleeing the big smoke, looking for trees and a beautiful, inspired, country existence, (and indeed, Castlemaine delivers that daily dose of country charm, creative inspiration and damn fine coffee by the bucket load... AND trees,) let us reassure you, in Central Victoria the tree houses are (mostly) for kids, and Tarzan’s just a late night re-run on 7Mate. Now something that you may, (or may not?) be aware of, that behind Castlemaine’s sun-baked heritage façade live hundreds of creative types that pull together to deliver the outstanding biennial Castlemaine State Festival. The festival showcases extraordinary local and international talent in all genres of the arts; including the visual arts, theatre, dance, literature, and music. The Castlemaine State Festival is Victoria’s premiere regional arts event, it’s so well curated, executed (and loved) that audiences of more than 50,000 are expected. (Note: subtle hint to book there…) The festival will be held from Friday, March 15, till Sunday, March 24. The program includes dancers from Denmark, theatre groups from Scotland, a preview of acts from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, stunning indigenous theatre and musical performances, acts from Belgium, youth events, singing, dancing, open studios, exhibitions, and vibrant discussions and presentations. Families and kids from littlies to 18 are also catered for with world class performances by comedians, contemporary circus acts, bands… Soul feeding creative amazingness for all… Even you Tarzan, you and your rope, you’re welcome too. The full program is available online at: castlemainestatefestival.com.au, or pick up a pocket sized program at Visitor Information Centres. Venues for all events are located throughout the Castlemaine region, and ticket prices vary. To book call the festival box office: 5472 5123. 30
A tale between Earth and sky & shared amongst the trees
THE VAUGHAN Springs Reserve aches with history. If the trees could tell stories they would surely blow your mind. As part of the Castlemaine State Festival the trees will indeed tell stories. The Republic of Trees is the 2013 George Fairfax New Theatre Award winning play. Nine years in the making, the piece was adapted by Australian author Wayne Macauley and is directed by Dan Mitchell. This exceptional theatrical event will be held amongst the trees, (and yep, you got it, IN the trees), at the Vaughan Springs reserve at dusk (7:40pm). The play will be brought to life by a superb cast of Australia’s most revered circus and physical performers and will be presented over seven nights (see the festival program: castlemainestatefestival.com.au for more info, dates, and bookings). Tickets $35 full, $30 conc. (Preview $30/$25). For adult audiences or ages 9+. (FYI: wear a warm coat and sensible shoes!)
Crafty like a fox

or a Nana. Take your pick
ONCE upon a time the term ‘craft market’ meant hardcore Nana-Craft. Scary stuff like woven nylon toilet roll covers and things made out of cork. My how times have changed. Nowadays craft markets are hipster havens, over flowing with those who appreciate the love and care poured into every stitch, potato print and brush stroke on every item, on every stall. Beautifully handcrafted pieces are works of art, lovingly created by highly skilled crafty types, who make a living out of their works of fine crocheted amazingness. One such market bursting with hand-made goodness is the Craft Market at Hanging Rock (Sunday, March 17, 10am-3pm). This market is held just twice a year and offers oodles of stalls laden with artisan hand crafts, fresh local produce, and luscious gourmet goodies. Carpark entry is $5. Hanging Rock is on South Rock Road, just outside Woodend. For more info go to craftmarkets.com.au.

Get your Tchaikovsky on at the Daylesford Town Hall
THE DAYLESFORD Town Hall (74 Vincent Street) is not as famous as her proud metro cousins, but she’s equally grand to us. This month the Town Hall has a full dance card, and is hosting some super exciting events. The hall will be full to bursting on Sunday, March 17, at 2pm, as it hosts the Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra. This full symphony orchestra of more than 60 players will be performing powerful and passionate renditions of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no.5. Guest soloist Roy Theaker (who has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious halls, from London to Tokyo) will be filling our own little hall with truly wonderful music on this special afternoon. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 conc, $5 secondary school students, and primary kids are free. Call Bev Martin for info or to pre book tickets on 5348 1129. Tix will also be available on the day at the Town Hall from 1pm.
All hail!

the King of the Lyra
WITNESSING a master of their craft first-hand is always inspirational. You know when you see those chefs slice up a spring onion at lightning speed without lopping off a digit. Brilliant! Or when you watch a juggler keep six flaming clubs aloft without singeing their eyebrows or catching the wrong end and permanently removing their handprint… it’s impressive. Thursday, March 21, the King of the Lyra, Psarandonis, will be performing at the Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves Street Castlemaine). Psarandonis comes from a renowned Cretan musical family. His mastery on the three stringed instrument, distinctive voice and tripped out renditions of traditional Cretan folk music have made him bit of a cult figure in Greece and beyond, and this tour sees him play Womadelaide, Golden Plains, and the Theatre Royal as well. Nice! Tickets are $44. Show 8pm. For more info and bookings call 5472 1196 or visit: theatreroyal.info.

Farewell summer
lost the guide to where to find it
helloooo hot new boots OH DEAR. It has happened… Shhh, we don’t wish to alarm you, but it’s March… which means, *gulp* summer is officially over. (Waaaaaahhh!) The leaves on the Ash trees around here have been hinting at it for weeks now (- have you seen the golden and claret hues tingeing the leafy canopy? Damn keen trees!) As we farewell perfect summer days, the change of season does bring several great things. Autumn is, without doubt, the most spectacular season ‘round here, and we go a bit nutty with the autumnal colours and red-wine-open-fire-place thing (which, as Central Highlanders, admittedly, we do wonderfully well). But let’s get to the really important bit people, the change of season also brings with it a whole new wardrobe… Oh yes. All the new coats, boots, scarves and gloves are in the shops. March heralds the return of the accessory. (Da-ta daaah!) Harry and Me (57d Vincent Street, Daylesford) is MOST excited about the new season and the inspired new ranges Autumn brings. They stock the entire (yes, boots and all) Autumn/Winter range of Elk, (yup, Dewpoint… ALL of it) as well as impossibly perfect pieces by High Tea with Mrs Woo, Nancy Bird, and leather goods by Status Anxiety, (hello perfectly sweet leather purses in luscious colours big enough to house an iPhone, looking at you) beautiful bright beaded bits by Emily Green and lovely homeware too: Japanese and Danish tableware, Orla Kiely (uh-huh), and just try to choose a candle from Amanda’s range – (Warning: you’ll probably have to buy another house just so you can use them all). Harry and Me have a beautiful range of kids’ stuff, carefully handcrafted baby gifts, pom-pom garlands, German wooden toys by Bajo, Oshi-M clothing and other locally made beautiful bits. It’s a good thing designers feel our sadness as summer slips away, to then dutifully fill the sunshiny void with beautiful things isn’t it? It makes them therapists really… doesn’t it? Harry and Me is open six days (closed Wednesdays). For more info on what size Elk boots are in stock, (better get onto that toot-sweet) call 5348 1172.

A very dirty weekend (BYO mountain bike)
YOU just know you’re not going to be wearing your Sunday best to an event called Dirt Fest. A festival of mud, sweat and tears, Dirt Fest is held over two days (Saturday, March 23, and Sunday, March 24) and it’s all about getting off road on two wheels, or two feet. This hardcore festival is a series of mountain bike races, trail runs and fun runs for men and women and there are free mud-rat bike and foot race events for kids. Dirt Fest events are held nationally and in Victoria it’s on at the Novotel Forest Resort Creswick, (1500 Midland Hwy) for a little bit of luxury after a whole lot of mud. (There are event discounts on accommodation available). The weekend features nine events, including the ultimate off road endurance challenge, which will earn the winners the oh-so-prestigious title of Dirt Master or Dirt Mistress. For all the event info including registration and accommodation packages go to: in2adventure.com.au
The Junes
lost the guide to where to find it
in March
THE stage at the Old Hepburn Hotel gets a real work out this month, with oodles of gigs (surely oodle is the collective noun for gigs? A Giggle? A Google? – anyway, we digress)… Needless to say, The Old Hep (236 Main Road) is hosting bands by the bucket-load this month, and Sunday, March 24 sees the return of one of the Old Hep’s most favouritest bands, The Junes. The Junes bring their high-energy blend of country fun to Hepburn for a night of dancing and shenanigans (from 5pm). The Junes are a bit of a hybrid supergroup, with the members playing in other bands on stages all over the world, but when they get together it’s an explosion of country-style awesomeness, super-exuberance and crazy good times. Tickets to the gig are $15 presale or $20 on the door (Unless sold out – so you best get onto that pronto!) For more info and tickets call the pub on 5348 2207. 38
All’s fair,
in love and scones MANY a Nana holds their scone recipe close to their chest. Handing down the secret ingredients to a worthy family baker in a shroud of buttery secrecy. A cup of cream? A splash of fizzy lemonade? Buttermilk? Precision cutting and tray placement?… Whatever the trick is to whipping up a perfect batch of steaming, towering, swoonworthy scones, you can be sure that every trick in the well-thumbed-recipebook will be on display at the Maldon Easter Fair: Great Aussie Scone Bake Competition. This annual event brings together scone mavens from everywhere to bake up a scone storm. The event will be held 7pm Thursday, March 28, in Main Street Maldon. This is the first night of the Maldon Easter Fair, they’ll also be turning on the tower lights and a certain floppy eared cotton-tailed bunny will no doubt be hopping along to tempt non-scone lovers (pfft, like they exist,) with Easter eggs. For more info call 0438 752 375.
Artisan lattes
lost the guide to where to find it
and works of art
THRONGS of makers and movers and shakers within the artisan world call Daylesford home. There are galleries aplenty where you can buy their precious pieces, and now, a monthly vintage and artisan market is popping up at Buffalo Girls Coffee Bar, (4c Duke Street, behind Lark) where you can meet the artists, and buy their gorgeous bits straight from the source! Coffee’s on at 9am and stalls are open from 10. Trawl quality vintage and upcycled clothing, art, handmade ceramics and jewellery. There’ll be crates of I-totally-haveto-have-that vinyl albums, as well as lip smackingly amazing food and produce. Sneak a bowl of brekky (Farmhouse Muesli - yum!) or if you’re organised and have had brekky by 10 on a Saturday, grab a Vintage Baker bikkie. The Buffalo Girls Bazaar will be held on the last Saturday of the month (this month March 30.) More info: 0423 250 713.

Crafty bunnies
& arty cats in Trentham

lost the guide to where to find it
CRAFTY and arty types don’t just faff away the days crocheting-here and slapping-a-bit-of-paint-on-there willynilly, oh no sir! Clever craft artisans and fine artists work to strict deadlines, and they all have the end of this month circled in bold red, as the annual Trentham Easter Art and Craft Show draws near. The show will be held from Friday March 29 ‘til Monday, April 1, (at the Mechanics Hall, High Street) with opening night held at 7:30 on Thursday, March 28. On opening night, this years’ award winning pieces will be announced. (Tickets are $15, this includes supper and drinks, and first dibs on a piece of original local art). Last year’s show featured over 300 entries, and more than 2000 people visited. (Not bad huh? Love our local artists!) Funds raised from last year’s show bought nearly 200 books for the arts and crafts section of the new Trentham library. Nice one Trentham! For more info call Lyn Williams: 5424 1199.
Saddle up
we’re off to Tylden BACK in ye olde days, the folk traversing horse-and-cartstyle between Trentham, Kyneton and Woodend decided they needed a stop along the way. Something with a ‘sellsabsolutely-everything’ general store (including pick and mix lollies in a glass cabinet) and a fab eatery opposite with enough room to park the horses out the front. So they stuck a pin in the map bang in between the three towns and named it Tylden. Now this history lesson maybe somewhat dubious (read: we made it up) but the good ol’ general store/servo is real (complete with lollies) as is The Tylden Harvester. The Harvester (at 43 Trentham Road) has a menu loaded with freshly harvested produce. They do weekend brekkies, classic Sunday roasts, live music every Friday night, local’s night every Wednesday, and happy hour at the bar Fridays 5-7pm. For more info, opening times and menu details go to tyldenharvester.com, or call 5424 8119.
Billycarts…
lost the guide to where to find it
ready, set, PUSH!
WELL before kids broke bones on flimsy aluminum scooters, they broke bones (and had looooooads of fun) on home made billy carts. Slapping a couple of wheels onto a piece of wood, plus a seat of some description and a piece of rope for steering (and perhaps a few painted flames on the side) was as good as it gets… throw in a nice big hill and whooshka – instant fun! The annual Maldon Easter Fair hosts a homemade billy cart event for kids aged 7 to 15. This year the Billy cart craziness will be held Sunday, March 31, at 1:30pm in Fountain Street Maldon. The race is timed and unlike the olden days, you have to wear a helmet and have brakes. (Ohhh!) There are prizes for each section and entry is free! For all the info and terms and conditions search Maldon Easter Fair on Facebook, (scroll to Homemade Billycart Event) or call Peter Thompson for all the details: 5472 2202.
