& some retro kitchen canisters to go CLUNES has always been mined for treasure. Prospectors still scratch around for gold, but most recently precious books and second-hand wares are easier to unearth, (and you don’t need a miner’s license). A new café in Clunes - Annie’s On Fraser, (at number 52) welcomes treasure hunters and lovers of vintage and retro to browse their eclectic range of collectables over breakfast. The café serves up brekky all day, (open Saturday, Sunday and Monday), and is staffed by Annie, her three daughters and two granddaughters. (Not to be left out, Annie’s son helps out behind the scenes too). The Cooper girls make great coffee and announce their ‘cheesecake of the week’ on Facebook weekly. (Search: Annies On Fraser.) They bake all their own cakes and bickies (including gluten free treats), and there’s always something quirky and new on the shelves to discover. Annie’s On Fraser is open 8am ‘til 5pm. Magic in the air and on your plate
ATOP Wombat Hill in Daylesford you’ll find the wonderful Botanic Gardens. And this time of year it doesn’t get much prettier. If those ancient trees, festooned in their autumnal plumage could strut peacock-like, they’d uproot themselves and parade down Vincent Street. (Spectacular I think the word is…) Nestled in under the trees, high up on the hill is Wombat Hill House Café. As part of the Harvest Week Festival they are hosting two locals’ nights, (Friday, May 3, and Saturday, May 4,) celebrating locally harvested and foraged foods. $55 includes a delicious three course menu. On a (no doubt) cold May evening the café will be toasty, with the fire lit and candles everywhere. Share a table with your neighbours and friends and treat yourself to a magical dinner in the beautiful gardens. Mention the Wombat Hill House Harvest Festival dinner when you book. For more info go to wombathillhouse.com.au or book on 5348 3329.

um… try May?
SANTA has barely recovered from his Christmas jet lag, and here we go, breaking out the jingle bells and talking December 25. Don’t freak out… This is all about the pud. Oh yes. As any proud Christmas chef will tell you, it’s never too early to make the Christmas pudding! Phillipa Wooller is a Chrissy pud expert, and she’s hosting a traditional Christmas Pudding workshop at the Country Cuisine Kitchens (4/4400 Midland Hwy, Daylesford) at 10:30am, Saturday, May 4. Learn how to make a luscious, traditional pud from a classic recipe. Followed by a light lunch and a glass of wine (…well, we are being festive after all.) Cost is $85 per person and includes all the ingredients and equipment, the recipe, an apron, and your pudding (which you can collect later in the day, or have it shipped to you later on). Now you’ve got 7 months to perfect the brandy custard. – Better get cracking! For more info and bookings call 5348 4141. 4

WHEN A CHEF works a wok it looks effortless, tossing vegies and noodles high in the air, whilst dodging flames, steaming pots of rice and other cooks brandishing knives. At home it can be a vastly different story. A flash-fried stirfry can become a rather ordinary chewy noodle stew if you turn your back on the wok. Meh. Chewy noodle stew is no fun. The kitchen at the Old Hepburn Hotel knows how to drive a wok, and each Thursday night they deliver the hot wokked deliciousness with an authentic Asian menu and specials changing weekly. The menu is listed each Thursday on Facebook (search Old-Hepburn-Hotel), and you know what the very best bit is… you can eat at the pub OR ORDER TAKEAWAY and bring home the hot wokked tastiness and eat it at home in your trackies! (Guilty as charged.) Sayonara chewy noodle stew! The pub is at 236 Main Road Hepburn Springs. Call in a takeaway order on 5348 2207. 5

of books
CLUNES is a pretty awesome town. It was the site of the first reported gold find in Victoria in 1851. By 1860 it was booming with treasure hunters from all over the world trying their luck in the dirt for instant riches. By the peak of the gold rush in the early 1860s there were twenty-three pubs in Fraser Street. And that, in itself, is pretty awesome, and says something about the miners’ hard earned thirst. Nowadays, riches come in the form of words at Clunes, and thousands still descend on the tiny town to mine the streets for literary treasures each May, as Clunes hosts their annual Booktown Festival. Last year Clunes was announced as an official international Booktown, (yippee!!) joining 16 other villages around the globe. This announcement really catapulted Clunes up onto the world book stage. With eight permanent bookstores open all year round, the town is a Mecca for lovers of the literary. This year the Clunes Booktown Festival will be held Saturday, May 4, and Sunday, May 5. Over 18,000 visitors are expected to hit the streets of Clunes, to browse and buy second hand, vintage and rare books from more than 50 visiting booksellers. Visitors can see presentations or attend workshops by guest speakers, meet authors for book signings, and generally celebrate the written word. There’s even a full program for Children’s Booktown (find out more on page 22). Bring along an old book and have it valued at the travelling book roadshow, and join in all the festival fun. The writers’ program features Peter FitzSimons, Kate Grenville, Ramona Koval, Gary Crew, Michael Heyward, Peter Rose, Ross Watkins, Kerryn Goldsworthy, and Scottish poet Liz Niven. The Festival is partnering with The Wheeler Centre to present Anne Summers in conversation with Michael Williams on Sunday. All the session times, locations and tickets are at: clunesbooktownfestival.com.au. For up to the minute info check the Booktown Facebook page (search: Clunes Booktown) Or pick up a program of events around the region. Entry badges are $5, or $15 for families.

Life in the slow lane can I take your order?
WHERE’S the pleasure in fast food? Mindlessly scoffing a two-buck burger in the car, by yourself, in honking, stinking traffic is, well… a bit grose. Slow food is where it’s at kids. The Daylesford Macedon Produce Harvest Week Festival celebrates the bounty of the region’s delectable best with many celebrations of food, held throughout the region until Sunday, May 5. Tuki, (at 60 Stoney Rises Road, Smeaton) will be hosting one such celebration of food, with the Tuki Tour and Slow Dinner. (Saturday, May 4.) Arrive for a tour of the farm at 5pm, wander along and meet the slow chooks, slow ponies, slow sheep and slow cattle. Feel free to drop a line in to catch a trout for dinner, (they’re not so slow) take in the views and enjoy a sumptuous slow dinner. The menu features the farm’s own produce. Cost: adults $40, children $20. Call Tuki for more info or bookings: 5345 6233.

the orchestra’s coming to town THERE’S something a bit special about an orchestra. All those different instruments played in unison to create a bit of musical alchemy… There are orchestras doing their thing all over the world, symphony orchestras, chamber orchestras, string orchestras… and a very special little orchestra in Melbourne called The Melbourne Mandolin Orchestra. The MMO has been performing for over 40 years, including international tours. Their next performance will be held in Castlemaine at the Phee Broadway Hall (Mechanics Lane). The concert ‘The Song of the Casuarina’ features the world premiere of a song written and performed by Victorian singer/songwriter Fay White. The MMO (featuring mandolins, mandolas, mandocellos, double bass and classical guitars) will bring this piece to life Sunday, May 5, from 2:30pm. For more info and bookings phone 5472 3233. Tickets $20, kids under 12, free.

Good Karma and great art
THE DAYLESFORD Dharma School is Australia’s first Buddhist primary school. It’s a not-for-profit independent school, and just like any other primary-ager, it’s having a growth spurt! To help raise funds for the school as it grows, they’re hosting a fun and inclusive exhibition and art award. It’s called Art for Kids’ Sake and is opening Saturday, May 4 at B1 Ballarat Art, 14 Camp Street, Ballarat. The exhibition will feature a silent auction of works by internationally renowned artists including Petrus Spronk and Gav Barbey, photographer Tim Burder as well as creations by the kids. Opening night will be a fun celebration of art, music and family entertainment. It’s a great opportunity to buy a work of art and help a beautiful local school continue to teach and nurture some of the youngest members of our community. under an autumn sky
LAVANDULA is a 100 acre slice of idyllic country life at Shepherds Flat (10 klicks from Daylesford). The old farm was built by the early Swiss Italian settlers to the region, and lovingly restored (stone by stone) by Carol White. Carol planted a kitchen garden, olives, grapes and lavender and watched her beautiful country dream grow into a beautiful country life. Lavandula is open to the public, Friday to Tuesday 10:30am – 5:30pm, and at certain times of the year seasonal festivals are held, celebrating harvest and heritage. Sunday, May 5, the Autumn Harvest Festival will be celebrated: (10:30am ‘til 5:30pm). Everyone is invited to the farm to watch the harvest, relax in the beautiful gardens, browse the shop, and enjoy something farm fresh and delish at the café. Wholesome home made delights will be served hot from the wood fired oven all day. This festival showcases the skills of producers – everything from pickling olives, making jam, preserving quinces and how to create super-tasty real Italian sausages. Learn the ropes at a workshop, so you can skill up on a bit of goodold-fashioned country kitchen know-how, to take back to your city pad and practice, (and dream of your very own idyllic country life). There will be live gypsy music all day, and puppets and face painting fun for the littlies. The Lavandula Autumn Festival is also playing host to Under an Autumn Sky – a showcase of local sculpture. These works, (created by more than 30 local sculptors) will be exhibited along a sculpture trail throughout the picturesque gardens. Take a map and wind your way along the trail, meet the artists, (who will be there for the exhibition’s opening on harvest day) and ask them about their precious works. The sculptures will be on display at Lavandula for a month. Many of the works will also be for sale. Lavandula can be found at 350 Hepburn-Newstead Road Shepherds Flat. Entry is $6 per adult and $2 for school aged children. For more info go to lavandula.com.au

Permaculture club
lost the guide to where to find it
(do you really want to hurt me?) PERMACULTURE… You’ve heard of it right? – No, it has nothing to do with the era of poodle perms of the 1980s. That’s an entirely different culture, and one certainly less sustainable. Permaculture is the practice of working with the local environment and ecological systems to create sustainable food sources, energy systems and a sustainable, low impact life. (Verrry unlike that high-impact-big-hair 80s perm culture indeed). David Holmgren is a local ecologist, ecological design engineer and writer… and guess what. He invented permaculture, (with his mate Bill Mollison) back in the 70s, and he lives right here in Hepburn Springs. These days David practices what he preaches at his permaculture paradise: ‘Melliodora’ at 16 Fourteenth Street. David and Su offer monthly tours of their mudbrick passive solar house, and garden, orchard and animal systems. (The tours don’t run during the winter months, so this month’s tour (Sunday, May 5), is the last one for some time). During the two-and-a-half-hour house tour, hear David and Su discuss the concept and passive solar design of the house, their grid connect solar power system, cool cupboard and bulk food drawers and food processing. Learn about the thermal benefits of mudbrick and energy efficiency, composting and grey water. This tour is followed by a two-and-a-half-hour garden tour, which focuses on soil fertility improvement, food gardens, livestock and bushfire resistance. These guided tours by the co-originator of the concept of permaculture are fascinating and inspirational. The May house tour will be held 10am – 12:30pm, and will be followed by refreshments. Cost $30. The garden tour takes place 2pm- 4:30pm, followed by afternoon tea. David’s books and permaculture publications will be available to purchase after the tour. For more information on Permaculture and the Melliodora property go to holmgren.com.au or phone to book a tour: 5348 3636.

Something pink for Mother’s Day
MOTHER’S Day isn’t all lazy brekkies in bed. Some mums, daughters, sons, and dads work up a sweat before brekky on Mother’s Day each year, and take part in the annual Mother’s Day Classic. The Classic is a fun run that raises funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Since 1998 it has raised $14.8 million (!) and is run in all capital cities, and some regional centres across Australia. Thousands of people dress in pink and run or walk the untimed 3km or 6.5km course. Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 12, and in this region it will be held at Woodend Children’s Park, (Nicholson Street). Register from 7:45am. The event welcome is at 8:30, and a minute of silence (to remember loved ones and those currently undergoing treatment) will be held at 8:40. The run starts at 9am, so you’ll be home in enough time to spoil mum for lunch. For more info go to mothersdayclassic.com.au or phone Kristina 0448 355 535.
The best Mum in the world
lost the guide to where to find it
deserves something better than nothing LET US tell you something… This year, when your mum says “Oh no, I don’t want anything for Mother’s Day” we can confirm right here that she is lying. Read between the lines kids… When Mum says ‘nothing’ she really means she’d like this: (in no particular order)… A sleep in, a delicious cooked breakfast in bed (weet bix wont cut it), a verrrry long session at a day spa, (book a whole day) a wad of cash and a day to spend it (by herself), she wants to be whisked away to somewhere amazing and told how adored she is, and yes she wants you to write how awesome she is in a card. If your mum has mentioned she’d like nothing for Mother’s Day our advice is to book High Tea, Sunday, May 12, at the Novotel Forest Resort Creswick (1500 Midland Highway) from 2pm-3:30pm. Indulge in delicious treats with a rose and glass of bubbles for mum. Cost $49, kids $25 (6-14 years), kids 0-5 free. For more information and bookings telephone 5345 9600.

A Sesquicentenary
lost the guide to where to find it
is worth celebrating
YOU CAN spot Daylesford’s Wombat Hill from miles away. A neat little volcanic bump popping up proudly from the surrounding picturesque countryside. Atop Wombat Hill is the very pretty and historically significant Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens. Back in the days of gold, the site was chosen and planted with oaks, ash, and elm trees, poplars, cypresses and blue gums. Locals donated favourite plants and seedlings and the early director of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens (Baron Sir Ferdinand von Mueller) donated conifers. A century and a half later, with many of these enormous and magnificent trees still thriving, the hill wears its beautiful gardens like a crown… or perhaps a party hat… as 2013 is the Gardens’ 150th birthday. Join the town, and the Friends of Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens as we celebrate this wonderful day on Saturday, May 11, from 10am ‘til 4pm. The hill will be alive with the sound of music (ahem… the afore mentioned Baron was a von Mueller, not a von Trapp, sorry…) and the Governor of Victoria will officially unveil the first phase of the restored historic fernery. The fernery had seen better days until the volunteer group The Friends of Wombat Hill decided to restore the ferny gully to its former glory. With a lot of fundraising, hard yakka and commitment, the Friends have rejuvenated the rustic cascade. The waterfall within the Fernery now spills down to shady ponds, as it did in its heyday. In fact, the waterfall is now cascading again for the first time in 40 years. Come and thank the Friends for their hard work and this gift to the town of Daylesford. Bring a picnic, stroll through the autumn leaves, take a guided walk at 12 and 1pm, and admire that magnificent view, hug a tree, and join in the 150th birthday celebrations. For more information about the history of the gardens, the Friends of Wombat Hill, plant sales and other upcoming garden events go to wombathill.org.au. The Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens can be accessed by car or foot from Central Springs Road, or via a footpath on Hill Street. 18

ALLENDALE is not just the name of the guy who used to be Jim in Neighbours then turned up with Kiefer Sutherland in 24… Allendale is also a cute little dot-of-a-town about 5 minutes northeast of Creswick. Allendale Studio is home to local artist Diane Coulter and Jos VanKesteren. The lines between Di’s artistic and homelife are blurred with everything she touches turning into something of a work of art. The old church that once stood on the bare paddock is barely recognisable now, as it has evolved into her life’s work, her warm home, studio, gallery, café, courtyards and gardens. And every corner is studded with sculptures, paintings, and other bold and beautiful works to admire. The latest transformation inside the house is the remodeling of two rooms as guest accommodation. This new B&B is in true Di style - unique, quirky and lovingly hand made. From the handcrafted doors, to the wooden window treatments, the eclectic and painstaking mosaic work and her own personal collections of totems and treasures from her travels to New Guinea, India and afar, each room is sumptuous and inviting and unlike any other B&B you’ve ever seen. Di is a keen cook as well – so you know you’re in for a brekkie treat if you stay! Allendale Studio is no doubt an artist’s paradise, with little mobile service (eek! can you handle it?!) it is truly a perfect place to unplug and unwind, read, reconnect and re-inspire yourself. Browse their library, stroll the grounds and soak in the boundless creative energy of this special space. Di’s unstoppable creativity has lead her to fashion, and she sells a range of her vibrant hand dyed and hand sewn garments at the gallery, as well as her paintings, sculpture, and hand made cakes and treats… oh and great coffee too. (Every artist needs good coffee). Allendale Studio (Gallery) at 4154 Creswick-Newstead Road will be open on Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 12) and is open by appointment at other times. They will be taking bookings for the B&B from this date too. For bookings and more information phone 5345 6378, or 0448 504 547.

for a very important book IF YOU can’t find a book at the Clunes Booktown Festival then there’s something seriously wrong with you. With over 50 booksellers arriving for the two day book-love-fest the number of books available to buy should be up around eleventy kabillion. Kids’ books are a hot item at Booktown, and the children visiting the Festival will be well entertained with a special Children’s Booktown curated just for them. This year’s theme is Alice in Wonderland. With a bit of tweaking and decorating, many cups of tea and a little bit of magic, the Clunes Library (53 Fraser Street) will be transformed into Alice’s wonderland for the weekend. Entry into the library is through the rabbit hole (oh yes… down you go!) Scenes from Alice in Wonderland will be performed throughout the day as a musical in the main street and at the Library. The actors are local children and members of the Clunes Kids’ Group. The outdoor scenes performed will be Down the Rabbit Hole and Painting of the Roses. Inside the library you’ll discover the Mad Hatter’s Tea party. The props and costumes are completely magical – designed by some of Clunes’ talented local artists and the play was written by local gal, 14 year old Paula Macki. Saturday, May 4, the outdoor shows are at 11am and 2pm and the Library show is at 12pm and 3pm. Sunday, May 5, the outdoor shows are at 10am and 1pm, and indoors at 11am and 2pm. Comic authors and budding illustrators will be inspired by the ‘How to draw Manga’ workshops. (Saturday 11am and 2pm and Sunday 1pm and 3pm), and Storytime will be held at the Library (lead by Hazel Edwards) at 1pm Saturday and 12pm Sunday. Professor Whatsit will be performing a traditional Punch and Judy show both days at 10:30pm, 12:30pm and 2:30pm, and there will be roving entertainment and face painting for the kids as well. Oh, and books. We heard a rumour there will also be books. (Eleventy kabillion of them.) For the full program go to clunesbooktownfestival.com.au

and lip balm
DO YOU know any of those clever creative Mother-Earth types who whip up hand-made luscious lip balms and delicious hand creams – pop them into sweet brown glass jars, hand make labels and sell them at markets? No, we don’t know them either, but we know they exist, because damn we buy a lot of their lip balm. If you’ve ever longed to make your own lotions and potions the Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre (13 Camp St) is holding a session (Saturday, May 18) on how to make your own skincare products from household items. During the session you will concoct a moisturizer or two, as well as lip balms and body scrubs. You will also receive recipes to take home, and all the inspiration you’ll need to become a lip balm market stall tycoon. The session runs 10:30am–12:30pm. Cost $30. Spudsational Spuds
THIS time of year the humble spud has its well deserved time in the sun. After months of careful growing into a odd shaped brown lump, the potato bursts free of its earthen home and *ta-daaah* presents itself as one of the world’s most loved, if slightly unattractive, foods. The potato is a versatile and handy little tuber to have around… It loves to be baked, scalloped, deep-fried, barbequed, mashed, sautéed, roasted, even made into sweet dishes (we’ve seen it happen folks). The lovely rich red dirt around here is prime spud real estate, so all manner of spuds grow here with ease, big whitish ones, lumpy browny ones, pinky-red ones, the posh ones and all the faves, and in May, Trentham town hoists the spud up onto the pedestal is so deserves and hosts The Great Trentham Spudfest. This spudtacular annual event (to be held Saturday, May 18, from 9am) is a great community day out, celebrating Trentham’s spud growing heritage. Spudfest involves loads of games, activities and fun for all; a parade from 9:30am, market stalls and great food (and not just potatoes - promise), live music and performers, puppets, competitions, ute-loads of the freshest spuds you’ll ever taste for sale, and a bit of history thrown in there as well. For a bit over 150 years the Trentham region has welcomed potato workers to the fields to harvest spuds, and back in the day (before modern-day harvest machinery came along) these workers stayed in small purpose built ‘Spud Huts’ throughout the long winters. Brrrrr! The Trentham Historical Society has identified 82 huts throughout the region in varying states of repair. Take a tour of the huts (the bus departs from Quarry Street Reserve at 11am). This 90 minute tour takes in interesting spud sites and a bit of local history, tickets $25pp ($20 conc.) Phone Margaret Stockton for more info and tickets : 0411 429 053. Entry to Spudfest is free. For all the spudelicious info including a detailed Spudfest program, go to trenthamspudfest.com.au or call 0419 897 660.

One million reasons to walk the dog
FUR BABIES are wonderful. Be they pedigree pooches, or grumpy guinea pigs, having a pet is one of the great pleasures in life. As much as we love our four legged friends, sometimes some animals slip through the cracks and end up in heartbreaking situations. The RSPCA helps those animals in need and requires vital funds to do so. Their main fundraiser of the year is the Million Paws Walk. This parade of pooches and animal lovers will be held at different locations right across Victoria, on Sunday, May 19, to help the RSPCA continue their great work. In this region the walk will be held at the Castlemaine Botanic Gardens. The walk is an easy 2ks and has wheelchair access. There’ll be loads of displays, merchandise, prizes and showbags, and all money goes to RSPCA programs. For all the info and registrations go to: millionpawswalk.com.au or, register on the day at 9am. (The million paws start walking at 10am).
Something for

SOMETHING for Kate is a great band name. Especially if your name happens, also, to be Kate. At some stage in your life you will hear the words ‘Something for Kate’ bandied around and excitedly you’ll think there’s a gift of sorts coming. Even better if you are a fan of the band, as you might even get to go along and see them perform something for, um, Kate (i.e.: you), in which case a personalised gig is especially cool. If your name is Kate and you are a fan of your namesake band you will be mighty chuffed to know that they will be performing for you (and all of your lesser-named friends) At the Theatre Royal Castlemaine, (30 Hargraves Street) Friday, May 24, at 7pm (dinner and show, $74) or 8pm (gig only $39). The Star Crossed Cities tour features loads of new stuff from their critically acclaimed album ‘Leave your Soul to Science’ and old faves as well. More info and bookings: 5472 1196 or visit theatreroyal.info. 30

A mad, passionate,
lost the guide to where to find it
(and slightly woolly) Beanie Affair YOU CAN’T wear them to Flemington, but they’re infinitely more practical than a fascinator. We’re talking about beanies. The humble beanie has come of age. No longer the preferred head-gear of cutesy snowbunnies (teamed with matching mittens) and hardened crims, (teamed with matching crow bar) the Beanie is basking in its time in the sun… albeit the cool, autumn sun. After the scarf, beanies are usually the next project tackled by the novice knitter. The Castlemaine CWA recognises this and has embraced this much loved knitting project to create an annual festival: Beanie Affair. Beanie Affair is a three day event, (Friday, May 24 ‘til Sunday, May 26) held to raise awareness and recognition of the wonderful textile artists in the region. This isn’t just a couple of trestle tables with a few pom-pommed beanies in footy colours, oh no. This is fine, hand made, couture head wear, priced from $20 to $100, and $100+. Artisans and crafty knitters, crocheters, felters and weavers of wool are invited to enter, display and sell their beautiful pieces. This event is a fundraiser for the CWA, who will share the profits with the artists. There is also an open invitation to the public to enter any of their own hand made beanies (skates on knitters - they need to be in by May 15!) The festival will also host workshops and knitting, crocheting and spinning lounges. The lounges are free and open to everyone to drop in and pick up a few stitches (um, tricks) from those with knitting know-how, or just bring along your knitting bag, have a cuppa and mingle with other textile artists, share ideas and your latest project. Beanie Central (the main venue for the weekend) will be at the Market Building in Mostyn Street. Here you’ll find Beanies from $20 - $100+, and handspun yarn, as well as CWA handcrafts and merchandise. For more info contact Castlemaine CWA 0438 759 146, or find them on Facebook: (Beanie Affair). All other info, entry forms and details can be found on their website: samant28.wix.com/beanieaffair

Two Rivers Blues
and the Loddon makes three THE GLENLYON General Store is a hub of good food and wine, and each Friday night it’s also a hub for a few chilled bevies and some mighty fine live music. On Fridays from 5pm ‘til 6pm it’s happy hour, followed by live music 6pm ‘til 8pm. Friday, May 24, Two Rivers Blues will be playing up a storm at the store. This energetic trio of harp, guitar and drums have played all over Australia, and the crowds have been up and jumping everywhere they play. They’ve blazed the Woodford Folk Festival, blitzed Byron Bay and now they’re headed our way, (let’s just hope the foundations at the old store can handle it). For more info on the band check out Two Rivers Blues at reverbnation.com/tworiversblues or just call into the Glenlyon General Store (63 Barkly Street) and see them for yourself! Entry is free. More info call the store 5348 7922.
Talk the talk
lost the guide to where to find it
and walk the walk BACK in our day we crawled across deserts, trudged through blizzards, and scaled Everest (whilst being swooped by magpies) to get to school… Well, ok, that’s possibly a slightly dramatised version of events, we just walked, but we did it every day, and didn’t complain about it, (much). Friday, May 24, is Walk Safely to School day. This (14th annual) national event encourages families to pull on the runners and leave a few minutes earlier to walk to primary school. The idea is to promote road awareness and safety, and positive attitudes to the environment and overall health. Even if you don’t know any primary kids who’ll be walking on the 24th, be mindful that there will be more kiddies walking to school, so keep an extra eye out for them as you’re driving in the morning. And if you intend on participating all the info can be found online at walk.com.au, or from your school.

feel the love!
IT’S GROUP hug time everyone. And time to share a story about our amazing community. There are a handful of committed and totally lovely people in our town who offer heartfelt help to other members of our small community who really need it. Daylesford & District Food Aid offer swags for the homeless and food for those who need it. Already D&DFA are having an exciting year, with the ChillOut Festival raising enough funds to purchase a food rescue van, (to collect quality food from local cafes and stores that should be consumed within 48 hours.) Once this van is up and running it will enable D&DFA to offer a wider variety of fresh food for those who need it. Their new premises are now open (at 8 Mink Street – rear of the new Daylesford Community OpShop). The volunteers have all completed training on nutrition, and they are just about to embark on the global Suspended Coffee campaign! The service is solely run on volunteer hours and love, and requires ongoing donations from our caring community to keep up the vital work! Coming into winter there’s a long list of much needed items such as; warm blankets, gloves, coats, scarves, thick socks. Raid your cupboard for good quality items. Or next time you shop, grab something extra: fresh, canned or packaged food of any kind (meat, dairy, fresh fruit and veg, nuts, eggs, coffee, tea, milk, in fact, any items will be gratefully accepted.) And you know those little shampoos and things you swipe from hotels? yeah, them… if they’re cluttering up your bathroom drawers, hand them over too! If you’ve had a bumper season in your vegie patch and you can spare a pumpkin or bag of apples, bring ‘em along! Is there a slow cooker in the back of the cupboard? An unused wedding gift perhaps? Gosh they’d love it to make soups and hearty winter fare… you know what to do! And cheques for petrol for the van, more swags, rent, bills, etc are always needed. Donate items at the OpShop or at D&DFA. For more info about donatable goods call Carmel: 0447 386 020. Or like (LOVE) them on Facebook: (DaylesfordDistrictFoodAid).

Straw, Rasp, Black & Blue
oh dear berry, how we miss you AS WE head into the depths of winter, the saddest part is not the donning of thermal underwear, nor the inevitable vitamin D deficiency. It’s the fact that a punnet of berries costs more than a small car. Fret not berry lovers, when December rolls around you will be lolling, sated and fullbellied under your raspberry and blueberry bushes plucking hundreds of jewel-like bursty berries by hand and wiping your red stained mouth with a sun kissed wrist, happy in the knowledge that you attended the Garden of St Erth Berry Pruning Workshop on Sunday, May 26; thus providing yourself with this extraordinary bumper berry bonanza. This popular workshop teaches you how to best prune your plants, trellising options, and all manner of berry tips and tricks. The session runs at St Erth, Simmons Reef Road Blackwood, 11am–12:30pm. Cost $35. More info and bookings at the St Erth Garden Shop 5368 6514.
The Land of Song
WALES is home to a town named: lanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. This town has the longest place name in Europe, and it literally means: St Mary’s Church in the hollow of the white hazel near to the rapid whirlpool of Llantysilio of the red cave. Fascinating yes (sort of), and oh-so-excruciating to tweet. Around here our early settlers didn’t bother with such fuss. Hepburn Springs for example, was named so, as there happened to be springs and a bloke called Hepburn. Hey presto! ‘Hepburn Springs’. Wales, aside from lengthy town names, has a fine tradition of choral song and will prove such at the Castlemaine Town Hall, Sunday, May 26, from 2:30pm. The brilliant Victorian Welsh Choir and Geelong Welsh Ladies Choir will present an afternoon of Welsh songs, opera choruses, and favourites from around the world. Tickets $25, More info victoriawelshchoir.com.au 37

the other side of Daylesford
OKAY… so you’ve made it all the way to Daylesford. Welcome! We hope you’ve packed your appetite, your scarves and gloves, and a camera… it’s a bit pretty ‘round here in May. So what do you have planned? Eating? Shopping? Indulgence? (All of the above? Yes?) How about a trip out of town? No really… we recommend it! Hepburn Springs is the other side of Daylesford. Just over *there* (points, throws stone, nods head). You can almost SEE it it’s so close! The beautiful village of Hepburn Springs is just a couple of ks (uh huh… that close) from Daylesford, and totally worth ‘leaving town’ to explore. The villagers have just launched a fab new brochure (grab it around town or at the Visitor Info Centre (98 Vincent Street) and point the car north to see what awaits. You don’t even need to leave the main road (yep, it’s called Main Road) to discover eclectic shopping, indulgent cafés and restaurants, and some of the finest day spas in Australia. At Portal 108 (look for the enormous tree in the front yard doing its autumn thing, dangling with lanterns and looking generally amazing) you’ll find unique handcrafted clothing, jewellery, accessories, and imported hats and décor. Next door, the Hepburn Springs Post Office is more than just stamps, with handcrafted gifts, and the village dressmaker on hand for alterations! Other boutique shopping experiences include Moongate Antiques, and Greenmantle Gifts. And you’d need to stay for six months to experience all the fine dining options in Hepburn. Try Darmagi, Rubens@Hepburn, Red Star Café, and The Argus Dining Room for starters! The Hepburn General Store is a hub of delicious treats and home cooked yumminess. Not to mention the very reason Hepburn Springs exists… the ACTUAL mineral springs are just around the corner. Dip your toe in at Hepburn Bathhouse, it’s just a bit spesh. Indulge at Omada, Acqua Viva, or Body Isle day spas, (there are just too many to list in this wee mag!) Find Hepburn Springs Village on Facebook (with links to an interactive Google map), and discover the other side of Daylesford.

A Perfect venue
for a Drop of live music THE VIBRANT music scene in the region is mourning the recent closure of a couple of favourite live music venues. Luckily necessity is the mother, father and live-in-lover of invention… and a new platform for live music has been created! Perfect Drop (5 Howe Street, Daylesford) is a much loved, unique food and wine destination in town, and each Sunday (commencing Sunday, May 12, and each and every Sunday 7pm – 11pm) they will showcase a program of exciting live music including sophisticated swing, jazz and jive, retro and vintage DJs, sultry blues and a splash of cabaret where required. The first Cotton Club kicks off with Daylesford’s fabulous Jennie Brown, performing a little swing, jazz and blues (reminiscent of Billie Holliday, Nina Simone and Etta James). Entry is free.
