the Bounty of Harvest
2
THE Daylesford and Macedon Produce Harvest Festival is in full swing. The festival has been running since Friday, April 24, and ends Sunday, May 3. But don’t worry… we haven’t eaten it all… yet! There are still loads of amazing food events being hosted throughout the region in the last weekend of Harvest festival, so let the belt out a notch and join in the deliciousness. This region is all about the food. From the paddock to the plate, the regions’ inspired farmers raise some of the finest meat and grow some of the best fruit and vegetables in the country. This amazing produce is then whipped up into something sumptuous and delish by the army of talented chefs throughout the region. DMP Harvest Festival is your chance to taste it all! (Oh yes!) With breakfasts, masterclasses, brunches, workshops, lunches, degustations, special dinners, treats and tastings… and we haven’t even started on what our winemakers are up to… Knock on a cellar door and meet your local vigneron. Learn about their grapes and sip extraordinary wines grown in our super cool climate. Hear the story of their wineries and learn a little wine-speak so you can pretend you know what you’re talking about next time you’re out at dinner. And make sure you buy a case or two of your favourite drop - our local vintages sell quickly. Once you’ve had your fill of all the deliciousness the region has to offer, pop into a farmers’ market and take home a little local produce and enjoy this tasty part of the world for a little longer. The full DMP Harvest Festival program is available throughout the region (pick up a copy, it’s the one with the fab photo of beetroot on the cover). Or go to dmproduce.com.au for tickets and the full program. Get social @dmpharvest or share your Harvest experience on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook (#dmpharvest). LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

A cultural exchange of fine photography
6
WELL before K-Pop and Kim Chi popped up in our daily lives, there lived a young boy in Clunes, named George Rose. George became a photographer and began (the now famous) Rose Postcards. In 1904 he travelled to Korea and captured a series of street scenes depicting daily life in Korea in the early stages of Japanese occupation. These images have played an important part in the political relationship between Australia and Korea. Recently, internationally acclaimed photographers William Yang (Aust) and Koo Bohnchang (Korea) have collaborated in an artist exchange program producing a series of photographs that will be on display at the In The Spirit of George Rose exhibition at Clunes Booktown, Saturday, May 2. Meet the artists, watch a doco on the journey of this exchange and see rare George Rose images and artifacts on loan from the State Library of Victoria. THERE are few things better than curling up with a good book on a cold day and being whisked away to another world. Walking into a bookshop is like embarking on an adventure… and walking through the gates at Clunes annual Booktown Festival is an adventure beyond the regular bookstore outing. If you’ve never been to Booktown, best you set the GPS for Clunes, Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3, as the tiny town comes alive as thousands converge to celebrate the mighty book. Clunes is an official internationally recognised Booktown, and is famous for its permanent bookshops, stocking thousands of titles every day of the week. During the Booktown Festival many, many more sellers of collectable books, rare books, page turners, kids’ books, fiction and non, pop-ups and prose, fill the empty shops with second-hand and new books for you to lift off the shelves and discover. The Booktown festival caters for everyone, including kiddos too young to read - with the famous hay bale maze, Punch and Judy, Artyscapes (an interactive sensory play space for pre-schoolers), face painting, sword making (watch out!) horse and cart rides and the Itty Bitty Bookvan. Meet small publishers and see what is on the very edge of publishing right now, learn about contemporary and traditional bookbinding, watch second year Acting students from Federation Uni unravel the acting process with a bit of Shakespearian love poetry. Meet authors, and artists, hear speakers and readings, listen to live music and roving performers and take home bundles of books, so you’ll be armed and ready for your next cold afternoon, snug on the couch with a pageturner. SINCE a clever caveman discovered how to rub two sticks together and make fire we have been telling stories around the campfire. Tales tall and true, spooky and sensational, wild and weird, gossipy and glorious, there is something extra special about telling stories around a campfire. Spudtacular Spudfest!
12
BACK in the day thousands came to this part of the world in the desperate hope that they’d unearth a big chunky nugget of gold and strike it rich. Who wouldn’t like digging around in the earth with picks and bare hands in this weather? Brrrr… These days there’s not so much of the digging for gold happening, but we still unearth nuggets of deliciousness daily… The humble potato grows like mad in our rich volcanic soil, and so, almost since the days of the gold rush, the region has been home to Spud farmers. In and around Trentham you can still see evidence of potato farming history, with tiny historic spud digger huts dotted around the farmland around Trentham. Once a year the humble potato is celebrated for its awesomeness at The Great Trentham Spudfest! (Go! Potatoes!!) This year Spudfest will be held Saturday, May 2, 10am – 4pm. Spudfest is a brilliant day out for all. There are loads of fun spudtacular activities for lovers of the tasty tuber. Kids are invited to join in some spesh spud crafts, potato sack races (hourly), a free spud dig (in the special ‘spud paddock’) take home the spuds you find. There’ll be a jumping castle for the energetic spud lovers, and have your face painted by local artist Rose Wilson (Archibald Portrait Prize finalist – not too many kids have had their face painted by an Archibald finalist!! - We might line up too.) Enjoy wagon rides and the mobile farmyard and there’ll be loads of stuff for the grown up potato fans too, food stalls, potato sales, potato peelers (a vital tool in this biz) history, merchandise, a special spud cooking demo by chef Guy Grossi, and more than twenty varieties of potatoes on display! (TWENTY! Who knew?!) There’ll be live music and entertainment all day. It promises to be a spudtacular day for all. Spudfest will be held from the Spud Hub (Quarry Street Reserve) and throughout town all day. Entry is free. For more information go to trenthamspudfest.org.au. Wombat Park Open Garden
lost the guide to where to find it
Beyond the famous gates
14
THE entrance to Wombat Park has to be one of the most photographed driveways in Australia. Wombat Park is an historically significant homestead and garden on the Midland Highway, on the northern outskirts of Daylesford. The drive into Wombat Park is the longest Elm lined drive in the Southern Hemisphere and this time of year the avenue is magnificent as the elms shed their autumn colour and leaves float down to rest. Everyone who has gazed up the magnificent entrance and wondered what lies beyond the gates is welcome to visit, Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3, as the garden is open to the public. (Yay!!!) The story of Wombat Park is fascinating. William Stanbridge built a modest homestead on the land in 1854, and began planning and planting out a magnificent garden. It is now considered one of the jewels in the crown of Victoria’s garden heritage, with significant trees listed on the National Trust register, a famous crenellated hedge – the largest and oldest of it’s kind in Australia, and (this time of year) shows wonderful autumn colour. At the turn of the century the current Arts and Crafts period house was built and Taylor and Sangster were employed to plant the ‘new garden’. This new garden includes the superb avenue of elms. (We wish our ‘new garden’ looked like that too. *sigh*.) The opportunity to view the garden at Wombat Park is such a treat. It is a private family garden and rarely open to the public. All proceeds from the day will support the continuing restoration and upkeep of the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens in Daylesford. On Sunday, Paul Bangay will be there signing copies of Stuart Rattle’s Musk Farm, there will be refreshments, (think tea and cakes in that beautiful garden – hello, gorgeous) a gourmet barbeque, wine, and a range of plants available to purchase from Lambley Nursery. Wombat Park will be open 10am-4pm both days. Entry is $10, children under 12 free. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

The ultimate Martini masterclass
THERE’S a reason why James Bond prefers Martinis. Can you imagine 007 with a Piña Colada? All umbrellas and pineapple wedges and cute bendy straws?! Nope. When it comes to movie-hero-cocktails a Piña Colada is more Spongebob than Mr. Bond. A Martini is the epitome of cool. To be able to mix a perfect martini grants you super-cool-bar-cred with your super-cool gin loving friends. As part of The Daylesford Macedon Produce Harvest Festival Jimmy’s Bar (82 Vincent St. Daylesford) will be hosting a Martini Masterclass Sunday, May 3, 3pm-6pm. Maidenii’s Shaun Byrne (also of Gin Palace) will share the Australian vermouth story and demonstrate how to prepare a variety of classic and contemporary martinis using Victorian craft gin Four Pillars. You’ll then mix your own under expert guidance. (James would be impressed.) Follow it up with canapés and discussion. Cost $90. Bookings jimmysbar.com.au

IT’S what country dreams are made of. The discovery of an old Swiss Italian farmhouse ruin on the outskirts of town. The dream purchase of this beautifully run-down property. A farmlet lovingly nurtured and restored over many, many years, and over time, a glorious lavender plantation and farm established with love and passion and hard work. Loads and loads of hard work. Lavandula is one of the many jewels in the crown of the region, visited by locals and those from afar, it is often photographed in glossy mags, and its beauty shared widely on Instagram. Lavandula is indeed one of the most beautiful farms in the country. Visiting Lavandula is a European experience. With a poplarlined driveway, olive and chestnut groves, a vineyard and that wonderful lavender. Autumn is harvest time, and all are invited to celebrate the bounty of the Autumn harvest at Lavandula on Sunday, May 17. There has been a flurry of activity at Lavandula in the early Autumn months, racing to pick the farm’s fruit, vegetables, nuts, grapes and olives. The farm then processes them to share over the winter months, but for now, it’s time to celebrate the end of harvest. Join in a day of celebrations, music and fun in these beautiful rustic surrounds. Take in a demonstration or two, pick something up from a stall, and sample the best of our regions’ food and wine. The younger guests might like to mingle with the farm animals at the children’s farm, meet and pamper the cutest little baby animals. Learn about distilling lavender, jam making and roasting chestnuts. And revel in the colours of Autumn before winter sneaks away all the leaves. Dogs are welcome (on a lead.) Festival entry is $6 (adults) or $2 for school aged children. Lavandula is at 350 Hepburn-Newstead Road Shepherds Flat. For more info go to Lavandula.com.au or call 5476 4393. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

A Little Bit of Garlic goes a long way
THIS time of year the nights are quick to close in. The sky lowers and dark fog creeps as we approach the shortest day. The last of autumns’ leaves are blown away baring skeletal trees standing stark in the mist. (Was that a distant wolf I heard? Oh no that’s right we don’t live in Transylvania…) But in case you’re a little paranoid about such things, you can keep the vampires at bay with a healthy garlic crop in your backyard. The Diggers Club at the Garden of St Erth (189 Simmons Reef Rd, Blackwood) is hosting a Great Garlic Workshop, Saturday, May 23, 11am-12:30pm. Penny Woodward will demonstrate how easy garlic is to grow, how to get the best out of your crop, and how to store your own garlic – for use throughout the year. Cost $29 (for Diggers Club members) or $39 for non-members. For more info and bookings call 5368 6514.

Oh Autumn…
We’ll miss you. xo
HATE to alarm you but the end of autumn is nigh… like, really nigh. So how will you see it out? (Besides booking an extended holiday in Queensland.) We have an idea for you… The Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves Street, Castlemaine) ends each season with a seasonal revue. The Autumn Revue will be held Friday, May 29, from 8pm. Pack your party shoes because they’re seeing lovely leafy Autumn out with a bang with three bands across three stages around the main room of the theatre. Sol Nation are headlining, with The Exit Crowd, and Pork Chop Party. After the bands the continuous music rolls on as the night transforms into a massive dance party with Dysmorph and Rhath playing till late. Tickets are $20. For more information and bookings go to theroyalc.com.au or call 5472 1196.

IF you had an AGA oven you’d have to have a slow-cooked roast every single day wouldn’t you? Of course you would. If you don’t have a spare $20,000+ to buy yourself this heavenly piece of kitchen hardware it’s ok. Piper Street Food Co have a mighty big AGA in their cooking school kitchen, and this month they are launching AGA Roast Season. Oh yes. (Possibly the greatest season of all.) The last Sunday of every month you’re invited to a Sunday roast lunch, it’ll be something delicious roasted in the AGA with the best seasonal produce. Seats are limited to 18 people. The first roast will be Sunday, May 31. Cost $75pp. Includes entrée, main, dessert and a glass of wine. (Bookings essential.) You’re also welcome to book a private AGA lunch for your favourite friends (minimum 16 people). Call Piper Street Food Co for enquiries, or to book your place at Sunday lunch. 5422 3553.
