Loud Music and Lots of Dancing
2
THERE are about 1000 reasons to hit up the Old Hepburn Hotel for a good time. And on Sunday, May 1, we can think of about 500 more. From 4-6pm the Euthymics are taking to the stage as a very special fundraiser. The Euthymics are Australia’s only six piece cover band made up entirely of GPs, (featuring Daylesford’s own Gerard Ingham no less)! This gig is a fundraiser for the La Faek clinic in Triloka, East Timor. All funds raised go directly to the clinic to help them continue their great work within their community. Local doctors Greg Stewart, Greg Malcher and nurse and medical student Kathleen Malcher travel to East Timor to volunteer at the clinic, so it’s close to the hearts of many of our local GPs. Come along and dance (also very good for your health - your Doc would approve) and have a great afternoon in support of this clinic. Entry $5. Astronomy is Awesome
HAVE you ever dared to step outside at night and look up into the stars? We know it is all kinds of FREEEEZING out there once the sun sets (and well before the sun sets) but it is SO WORTH IT to get out there in your thermals and puffy jackets and look up! On an average night you’ll see meteors, planets, moons (ours and others), satellites, the ISS (that’s the International Space Station for those less spacenerdy), clusters of stars, constellations and galaxies and the glorious sparkling smudge of the Milky Way. And that’s just with the naked eye! This month is extra awesome because Earth is about to whizz through the tail of Halley’s Comet – which means we’re in for a month of shooting stars… Perfect time to look up and make a wish! (Especially May 6 and 7!) If you’re keen to look a little deeper into space and learn about our stunning southern sky you’re in luck! The Creswick Neighbourhood Centre (19-21 Victoria Street) is hosting an Astronomy course on Mondays this month, starting Monday, May 2. Take a closer look at our Solar System, comets, asteroids, the heliosphere, black holes, the Milky Way and all the awesome stuff up there. Use a telescope to observe the basics of our night sky (the moon, stars, globular clusters) and loads more. The final session will be held at the Talbot Observatory where you will look deeper into space and discover what our humble planet is floating around with in space. Places are limited and bookings are essential. Materials including a DVD are provided. Everyone is welcome, including kids from 12+ years. The Astronomy Sessions will be held across four Mondays in May (2, 9, 19, and 23,) 7pm – 9pm. Your teacher is Robert Holmes, astronomer and owner of Talbot Observatory. Cost $115pp for the four sessions. For more information and bookings go to creswicknc.org.au or call 5345 2356.

Dreaming of
Summer Berries and Cream
AS we head closer into the coldest time of year, fresh summer berries seem so so distant. *Sniff* Oh berries!! We miss you in winter! Naturally!

FOLKS have been making wine since the dawn of time. There are plenty of ways to ferment a grape. Some more ‘natural’ than others… In fact, the very topic of ‘natural wine’ stirs up fiery debate in the winemaking world, and the clever wine peeps at Wine And The Country (1/97 Vincent Street, Daylesford) want to set the record straight. Tuesday, May 3, Wine And The Country will introduce you to wines made naturally. Come along (from 7pm-9pm) and brush up on biodynamic, organic, orange, zero sulphur, and many other styles of natural winemaking. Taste and learn what works and what doesn’t. It’ll be an interesting (and delicious) evening. This one-night-only tasting event is $15 or $10 for members, and includes wine tasting, cheese and a wealth of natural wine info! Limited tix available. For more info and bookings call Wine And The Country: 5348 3756.

Spudtacular! Spudlicious!

It’s the Great Trentham Spudfest
10
YOU know what’s under your feet right now? (Apart from mis-matching socks and a few autumn leaves…) GOOD DIRT. This region has some of the most fertile luscious red dirt in the country, a spin off from all those volcanoes studding the district (yes, most of those hills are volcanoes… uhh… Wombat Hill anyone? Yep, Daylesford’s pretty little hill is a volcano too). That magic red dirt is the best stuff for growing all kinds of things, and in this neck of the woods we grow loads of potatoes! Hundreds and hundreds of tonnes of them! We LOVE the humble spud. The history of growing potatoes in this region goes back eons, and in Trentham each year they host a festival to celebrate the potato and the town’s spud farming heritage. The Great Trentham SPUDFEST is in its ninth year and this year the humble spud gets to shine (well, as best a potato can) Saturday, May 7. Last year over 4000 people came to celebrate the humble potato in Trentham, and this year will be bigger, better and potatoier than ever. (That is so a word.) Spudfest is a brilliant day out for the whole family, with spud games and activities galore, loads of varieties of spuds for sale from local farmers, free music all day on the main stage and roving entertainers playing to the crowds, lots of fun kids’ stuff, cute animals to pat, a jumping castle, and face painting (promise they wont make your kid look like a potato). There’ll be potato cooking demos by executive chefs from Les Toques Blanches, for a bit of delicious potato inspo to take home with your bag of spuds. One of the region’s historic spud digger huts will be open to view. Back in the day seasonal spud diggers would stay on the potato farms for harvest season, in tiny huts provided by the farmer. With no water and no electricity they weren’t exactly palatial, yet some spud diggers managed to live in them permanently. Learn the legend of Bob Stewart, who lived in his hut until he was 97!! Wow! Roll on Spudfest ‘16! More info at: trenthamspudfest.org.au or call 0419 897 660. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

THE weeds in the backyard ain’t just weeds y’know. Many of those seemingly pesky plants that pop up in the garden are completely edible and nutritious! You wont believe how many common weeds have culinary and medicinal uses that we’ve all forgotten about as generations have rolled by. Mother’s Day at Lake House
(And the Best Kid Award goes to…)
YOU know what mum doesn’t want for Mother’s Day? A pair of fluffy slippers and an iron. As Amy Winehouse would say: “Noooo. No. No”. This year Mum really wants to be totally spoilt at Lake House, oh yes (yes, yes) she does. Sunday, May 8, Daylesford’s stunning Lake House (King Street) is putting on a super special four course set lunch menu especially for your gorgeous Mum, (and all the other gorgeous mums). And your mum will totally appreciate it more than a pair of fluffy slippers and it’ll be waaay more memorable than an iron. (Seriously, your mum will divorce you if you buy her an iron – don’t do it). This beautiful lunch is $120pp. Bookings are essential. If you can’t make it to Lake House, you can always buy her a gift voucher… (which is a million times more exciting than any regular gift voucher). Loved by One Million Hearts

IN DAYLESFORD there are at least a million paws. Our happy local dogs are seen all over town: doing laps of the lake, shopping our boutiques, grinning at us from the backs of utes, sitting up for lattes on Vincent Street, and gaining their 15 minutes of fame on Facebook. We love our puppy pals. That is why we are SO EXCITED about this year’s RSPCA Million Paws Walk (to be held Sunday, May 15)… Because this year the Million Paws Walk will be held at Lake Daylesford! The 1.5km track around the lake has to be one of Australia’s most picturesque Million Paws walks, and everyone with a dog is invited to join in! The walk starts at 10am, you can do one or two laps of the lake with your furry friend, and raise funds for the RSPCA while you’re at it. The day will include a fun dog treat search, a BBQ (including vegetarian options) a coffee van (well it is Daylesford, we always need a coffee after a walk around the lake)… there’ll be live music, fun for the kids and of course… fun for all the doggies! Register online, or on the day from 8:30am. The walk starts at 10am so get down there early. After the walk there will be a fabulous Pet Parade, with loads of brilliant categories (or should that be dogegories?) to enter your pet. There’s prettiest, most handsome, best costume, best groomed, scruffiest, smallest, largest, waggiest tail, loudest bark, best tricks, worst tricks (that is despite the owner’s best efforts the dog doesn’t do any tricks! – Love it!), fastest runner, the animal who thinks it’s a dog but isn’t, and best lookalike. SO MUCH DOGGIE FUN! There’ll also be a fab raffle. All funds raised through registrations, merchandise sales, and other online fundraising (yes you should sponsor your walk!!) will go back to the RSPCA so they can continue their great work for animals Australia-wide. There is already a huge list of amazing performers lined up to take to the stage on June 5, and there’s loads of time to get your act together to take to the mic too. For more info and to book a spot on stage, call Nel Staite 0347 628 911 or email Nel at: info@findlocalmusic.com.au. Check out what else is on at the Old Hep at oldhepburnhotel.com.au
