Basically it’s Coffee Nirvana In Castlemaine
THIS month, we’ve gone extreme! We’ve gone straight to the source, well as good as… Coffee Basics (1 Halford St, Castlemaine) not only share our love for coffee, they took it a step further and started roasting the blessed bean! Yay for them (and us) Freshly (micro) roasted delicious coffee beans on our doorstep… And they know their stuff… how’s this: Did you know when coffee is roasted it pops just like popcorn? AND that coffee is the second largest legal commodity traded on the world market after oil? AND that Arabica beans have approximately 11.5mg caffeine per 8 gram shot compared to a can of coke at 46mg! Basically, there’s nothing basic about Coffee Basics. Drop in for a shot/ cup/bag of fresh roasted heaven. Mmmmm. Oh, and that is their stunning roasting machine gracing this month’s cover. dp

We heart the Horsies,
It’s Spring Carnival! Giddy Up!! SPRING Carnival is upon us. It’s that special time of year when you stride confidently to the TAB and put a dollar each way on race 4 number 12… or something like that. Whatever. The races are actually all about the frocks, the champers, the fascinators and remembering to pack a pair of ballet flats for later, when your feet are crippled by blisters. So with that in mind lock the 2011 NMIT Kyneton Cup into your race meet diary. Held smack bang between Melbourne Cup Day and Oaks Day, (Wednesday, November 2), the $100,000 Kyneton Cup is run at one of Australia’s most picturesque country racecourses, NMIT Kyneton Park. Don’t waste a day of that spray tan. Adult tickets are just $25 at the gate. Oh, apparently there’ll be some horseracing too. More info kyneton.countryracing.com.au kd

BUSKERS come in all shapes and sizes… and sounds. On one hand you have your kiddies busting out a bit of squeaky violin practice, and on the other you have the reincarnation of Hendrix. The Festival begins 5pm Friday, November 11, at the Twilight Trash and Treasure market, and plays till 9pm Sunday, November 13. Busking of every description will be held on every corner throughout Elphinstone. Spin me around once and I’m lost and struggling with which way is up. Heck, you don’t even need to spin me… I can get lost in my own home – okay, so maybe that’s slightly exaggerated. But you get the idea. I was busy picturing tabloid headlines ‘lost in forest’, ‘lost people get lost’, ‘lost in translation (with a GPS)’, lost is lost, again I think you get the idea. Lots of quirky bylines with me as the subject. My secret exposed to the world. Well, I can laugh out loud at the fact that I’m not lost. I. Did. It. Made my way out of the forest following a map and GPS! Brendan Murray offers a military style briefing (no stone unturned) prior to your departure, complete with a cleverly packed kit of supplies full of necessary safety stuff (and yummy snacks) to boot. There are more than 10 walks (of varied gradings) to choose from through nearby forest with stunning natural features to admire along the way. We chose the Sailors Falls (short) walk just to be sure. And we are hooked. So, Brendan Murray can continue to promote his walks with no man, woman, (or editorial team) lost. Ever. For more information, descriptions of walks and bookings go to secretforestwalks.com or call Brendan directly on 0418 301 281. He even does GPS treasure hunts and special workplace team building sessions. dp

The Smallest Art Gallery in
the world (okay, well Victoria...then) A WHILE ago I created a ‘for charity’ window display at the Red Star Café, (115 Main Road Hepburn Springs), which gave me the idea of creating a Window Gallery… A perfect opportunity and great position. ‘When you have a good idea, act upon it’. I spoke to Ed at Red Star and he also thought it a good idea. We agreed that there would be a monthly display which I would curate, and install in such a way as to show the artist’s work off to its greatest advantage. I called for interested artists to contact me send me an image of the object(s) they intended to display. Any artistic expression considered. This mini exhibition runs from the first of each month, giving the artist the opportunity to gain some local exposure, while providing an artistic point of interest in Hepburn. The Red Star Window Gallery Project commenced on the October 1, and already seven months have been booked in advance. Contact Petrus if you are keen to participate, phone: 5348 3467 or 0437 668 090. ps

Rock the Casbah Castlemaine Style
IT’S a little bit Castlemaine and a lot bit Casbah. The Maurocco Bar at the iconic The Midland Hotel (2 Templeton Street Castlemaine), is an exotic, sumptuous feast and the perfect place for after work (after shopping/after sightseeing/after anything) drinks on a Friday evening. This month Truly Madly Deeply will summon up sultry ballads, swing and Latin grooves to coax you (or throw you headlong) into a relaxed weekend vibe. The Midland Hotel has been accommodating travellers, since it was built in 1879. The Maurocco Bar and unique neighbouring boutique stores of Fashion Central (on the ground floor of the Midland Hotel) are more recent tenants, so after you’ve perused and purchased, surely it’s time for cocktails? The Maurocco Bar is open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening. Truly Madly Deeply perform Fridays in November 6-9pm. More info: 5472 1085. kd

Getting on the Piste and rolling at the Rock
THE Woodend Hanging Rock Petanque Club Incorporated is really just a schmancy title for ‘A bit of fun with mates after work’. Petanque is a beautifully simple bowls game. In our interpretation of the rules, it seems you just need to get your Boule closest to the Jack. Ohhhhh if only it were that easy! There is a detailed 26 page rule book from Petanque Australia outlining the finer details every Petanque player worth their official shooting mat should own. If you’d like to learn the ins and outs of a good roll on the piste, gather a few pals (with good hand-eye) and rock up to the Rock for a roll. Petanque at the Rock Social Petanque Thursdays 5:30pm. Hanging Rock Reserve 4km east of Woodend. For more information call: 5427 2477 or visit: petanqueattherock.com.au. kd

now trading
WHEN Melinda Ross paused for just a moment between travel and fabulous careers in design, Topham Trading (39A Albert St, Daylesford) was the fruits of that (laboured) pause. And lucky us, she has set up shop right on our door-step. Melinda has searched the globe for treasures, and shares with us the quirkiest trinkets, starting at just a couple of dollars – to Felted throws by Sophie Prieu (oh yes, the ones they sell at Conran in London and Paris and Anthropology in NY… yup, THOSE throws…) Her exquisite range includes rare and exotic collectables and striking pieces of designer furniture. Melinda has hand selected ethical trade fabrics from the Better Worlds Art Scheme, which promotes reconciliation through cross cultural projects and unites artists through collaboration, particularly Aboriginal artists from remote communities. Topham Trading is open daily 10am – 5pm. More info: 5348 3164. dp

Homewares in Hepburn Bubbly, fun and refreshing
THE DIY revolution has taught us how to whip up a mezzanine extension with an escalator and reclaimed water feature fountain before lunch, but unless you’re one of those designery types (who know which cushion to scatter, which throw to throw, which colours sing, and which look like Fido’s coco pops) it’ll probably still look a little bit wrong. Luckily for you, Christowel Designs want to impart a little interior design wisdom and help you create a beautiful home. Their homewares gallery and shop stocks an eclectic range of contemporary pieces, accent furniture, art, textiles, outdoor décor and gifts that’ll have everyone asking WHERE did you get that?!… in a good way, we promise. ONCE a symbol of toughness and attitude, the tattoo has become an accessory. Schoolgirls are shelling out their hard earned pocket money for cutesy ink and footy players wont line up for goal without a sleeve of technicolour tatts. One man who knows a thing or two about tattoos is Angry Anderson. Mr Anderson is of old school tattoo heritage and loves skin art so much that waaaay back in 1976 he named his band after them. Raise as much cash as you can for these fantastic organisations… We support you! (but dammit, come December 1, we’ll be handing you the razor at daybreak).
