...to play with your food AN EVENT called Circus Shenanigans and Pasta should probably come with a disposable poncho. Held as part of the Swiss & Italian Festa, (Friday, November 2, 4pm- 5pm), this is a double bill of slap-stick spaghetti and photography tom-foolery with two of Australia’s most talented circus performers providing an hour of hi-jinx and mirth. Daniel Oldaker is a crazy chef in ‘Live Flavour’ performing foodie stunts and fun, and Matt Wilson presents ‘The Photographer.’ Hold your breath and be amazed at the lengths he goes to take the perfect snap. Circus Shenanigans and Pasta will be held at The Palais (111 Main Road Hepburn). Children $12 (show only), or $22 show and pasta. Adults $12 show only, or $27 show and pasta. Pasta will be dished up 5pm ‘til 6pm. More info and bookings go to: thepalais.com.au or phone: 5348 4849.

Open Studios
lost the guide to where to find it
inside secret creative worlds IT’S NO SECRET that the region is somewhat of a magnet for talented creative artists of all genres. Perhaps it’s the clean country air, beauty of village life, supportive creative communities, or maybe even something magical in the water... (most probably a combination of all of the above). The inaugural Daylesford/Macedon Ranges Open Studios event is your chance to step inside the inner sanctum of many local artists’ studios and discover the pulse of creativity that keeps the creative peeps in the region producing such high calibre fine art. The event will be held over two weekends, the (unofficial Melbourne Cup) four day weekend: Saturday November 3, till Tuesday November 6, and Saturday November 10 and Sunday the 11th. Painters, ceramicists, printmakers, gold and silversmiths, metal artists, illustrators, sculptors, glass artists, mixed media and textile artists and photographers, (phew!) will throw open their studio doors and welcome you in to chat and view their works (and maybe even take a sneak peek at a work in progress if you’re lucky!) There will be Open Studios right across the region, from Romsey and Mount Macedon, to Malmsbury, Daylesford, Woodend, Kyneton and Trentham. There are 30 artists involved in this first-ever event for the region. Brief profiles of each artist are available online at: dmropenstudios.com.au. (Download the excellent guide book.) There you’ll also find detailed maps, and all the info you’ll need to create an inspirational weekend arts trail. See as many studios or as few as you like. And if you’re not sure where to start, head to St. Paul’s Anglican Church Hall (22 Yaldwyn Street, Kyneton). Here you’ll find an exhibition showcasing each of the 30 artists involved. It’s just a teaser to whet your creative appetite. The exhibition will be open each day. All artists’ studios will be open 10am ‘til 5pm, and entry is free. For more information go to the website (above) or contact Jill Rivers on 0418 389 189.

Let us lead you...
... down the garden path THIS time of year watching the grass grow is akin to Formula 1 Racing. (Complete with buzzing bee sound). No sooner have you whizzed over the lawn with the Victa, and the grass is slapping you ‘round the knees, laughing at your futile attempts. The Castlemaine and District Festival of Gardens celebrates Spring’s verdant enthusiasm and showcases 24 of the most beautiful, diverse and inspirational gardens in the region. Weeds have been plucked, bees are embarrassingly drunk on pollen, and grass has been trimmed into brutal submission. The festival runs Saturday, November 3, ‘til Sunday, November 11. Spend a lazy afternoon wandering fragrant flowerbeds, or while away a week in each perfecty-planted-paradise. Pick up a festival program ($3) and maps at the Castlemaine Visitor Information Centre (Mostyn Street). For more info go to festivalofgardens.org, or call Peter on 5470 6593.

real photography exposed
WITH A smart phone in everyone’s back pocket, suddenly we’re all photographers. Well... when a photo on your phone turns out okay you put it on Facebook, get a few likes and feel like an artist, - that is, until you see the work of a real photographer... There’s a new photography gallery in Daylesford called Bokeh, (upstairs at 64 Vincent Street). Directed by Sonja Rolton, Bokeh will feature emerging and established, local and international artists. There are three exhibition spaces within the gallery, which will allow for a diverse range of photography to be on display at any one time. This month Bokeh is showing the work of Anthony Scibelli (A Brief Life) and Jason Blake (Destination Journey). (Not an iPhone happy snap in sight. Promise.) Bokeh is open 10am ‘til 5pm Thursday to Sunday, and public holiday Mondays. For more information, or to apply to exhibit, call Sonja on: 0403 136 655. 8
Parties, parades and pasta
lost the guide to where to find it
it’s Festa time!
HEPBURN Springs’ Swiss & Italian Festa is an annual celebration of the heritage of early settlers to the region. This year the Festa celebrates 20 years of parties, parades and pasta, with a bit of film, facepainting and fireworks thrown in there to boot. There are so many events across the six day celebration, and here are a few highlights for the diary. Barcaldine House (238 Dairy Flat Road, Musk) is hosting a mini Italian Film festival (of sorts), screening Il Postino, Cinema Paradiso and Bread & Tulips over three nights with a delicious Italian dinner by Rosemarie & Frank La Rosa. Tickets $42 (dinner and film). Book at the Daylesford Visitor Info Centre. Dinner at Bellinzona (20 Anni di Festa a Bellinzona) (Friday, November 2,) will be just a little bit gorgeous with Bellinzona’s head chef Robyn Davies creating a fabulous menu matched to local wines and Sergio Ercole (one of Australia’s finest classical and Latin guitarists) entertaining diners. Dinner is $60, (three courses) Bookings essential 5348 2271. Bellinzona (77 Main Road, Hepburn Springs). The Grand Parade and Family Festa is a much loved community celebration, with a parade marching/dancing/ yodelling/playing its way down Main Road Hepburn Springs from 10:30am Saturday, November 3. After the parade wander down to the Mineral Springs Reserve for fun, Swiss and Italian food stalls, performances, spaghetti slurping and waiter races. The Family Festa rolls on ‘til 3pm. As always, the Swiss & Italian Festa ends with a bang. The Lantern Parade and Fireworks (held from 7:45pm Sunday November 4, at Mineral Springs Reserve), is a fantastic tradition. Bring a picnic blanket (and another to rug up in, it gets cold!), and kick back under the big gums and enjoy the weeees and ahhhhs of a pretty spekky fireworks display to wrap it all up. For full details on all events grab a program at the Daylesford Visitor Information Centre (98 Vincent Street) or go to: swissitalianfesta.com and download a copy. 10

Happy Birthday Dear Festa, happy birthday to you...
THE SWISS & Italian Festa is a celebration for the whole community and visitors alike. With so many must-do/see events crammed into the six day festa, it’s a bit tricky to know which ones to lock into the social calendar. Well, if last year is anything to go by, when international festival favourites The Shuffle Club played The Palais (111 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) they raised the roof, bounced the floorboards, and had everyone up and dancing ‘til the wee hours. They were so well loved that the Festa committee signed them up for the Festa’s 20th Anniversary Party: (Saturday, November 3, 8pm till 1am). The theme is Harlequins and Diamonds. Frock up in the finery, add a bit o’ bling and bedazzlery, buckle up the dancing shoes and hit the wonderful Palais Ballroom for a night of fun and frivolity. It promises to be a Festa highlight. Tickets are $30 at the door. For more info call the Palais on: 5348 4849.

ANI Choying Drolma is a Buddhist Nun from Nepal. Being from high in the Himalayas, she is a little closer to heaven than the most of us, and if you’ve heard us sing in the shower lately, her voice is certainly closer to heaven than ours. Ani is recognised as one of the finest singers of her generation living in the Himalayas. She has performed her beautiful interpretations of Buddhist mantras and songs around the world, from Hamburg to Hong Kong, and now for the first time, she will be performing in Australia. And in our neck of the woods at The Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves Street Castlemaine, Saturday, November 3 from 7pm). Kids, goats and goats’ kids in Bullarto fields
lost the guide to where to find it
BULLARTO Primary School is probably the cutest school in the bush. The students have their own goats and once a year host a Goat Field Day, celebrating everything their amazing animals bring to the table (um, quite literally). Sunday, November 4, the school will showcase their wee herd with a bit of help from the Central Highlands Goat Club, and share their knowledge on goat milking and cream making. The Happy Goat Cafe will be serving up all manner of goaty delicacies and deliciousness, goat pizzas, goat pies, even goat sausages on the BBQ. Nice. There will also be a (nongoat themed) jumping castle (well it would’ve been tricky with those horns), and stalls to browse as well. The Goat Field Day will be held 10am ‘til 3pm, at the primary school, 131 Bullarto South Road. Entry by gold coin donation. For more info contact the school on: 5348 5559.

sipping Mamma Africa CONFESSION. We at lost magazine are quite partial to a beverage. Yes, that could mean beer. (Often does...) Yes, that could mean raspberry cordial. (Prefer it to Fruit Cup...) But not a day passes without a cup (or five) of coffee. Oh blessed Coffee Bean, how we love you. *sigh* Daylesford is a town not short on good coffee. In fact, if you find a bad one you’re probably not in Daylesford. Still, when Vigen Karibian moved to town he thought Daylesford was due for a new shot of espresso, and decided to roast his own. (Look out... Did we just hear freshly roasted in Daylesford?! Squeeee!!) Vigen has created a range of coffee blends and a new cafe inspired by his own African heritage. Buffalo Soldier is the coffee, and Buffalo Girls Coffee Bar is the cafe. The first range sounds all fashionista - (being the Spring/ Summer collection) and it’s called Mamma Africa. Mamma Africa blends will be all single origin African blends, and oh-so super spesh. Buffalo Girls Coffee Bar is the new cafe tucked in behind Lark at 4c Duke Street, in an old garage. The atmosphere is industrial-old-school-lo-fi-street, with internationally renown graf artists adorning the walls, sculpture, and random acts of art, reclaimed timber, and loads of space to spread out with the newspaper, prams (kiddie friendly yes!) the perfect space to catch up with your old-school crew. Vigen is rolling out espresso (of course) cold drip, a bit of old school plunger (don’t be scared!) and he’ll also be baristaing up a new surprise method every now and then to keep those jaded coffee snobs on their caffeinated toes. The Buffalo Girls Coffee Bar is opening this month. (Hooray!!) The cafe will be open Thursday ‘til Saturday 8:30am ‘til 4:30pm. They’ll be selling take-home packs of coffee (so don’t stress if you don’t live close enough to get your daily Buffalo Soldier fix). Wholesale coffee sales enquiries are welcome Monday to Friday on 0423 250 713. For more info go to: facebook/buffalogirlscoffeebar

One Nana’s trash
is another Nana’s Rembrandt HAVE you ever watched the program ‘Antiques Roadshow’? The one where Nana’s crappy old painting (the one that hangs in the loo) is assessed to be a priceless Rembrandt? There’s just something about it that has us transfixed... (We love the ones where the snooty ma’am expects her dirty ashtray to be an ancient Greek vessel, where in actual fact it’s just a dirty ashtray.) If you’ve ever wondered the history or value of treasures around your home, take your pieces on the road to Blackwood. The Blackwood Spring Antiques Roadshow will be held at Forest Edge Country House, (26 Martin Street Blackwood) from 9am ‘til 4pm, Sunday, November 4. Expert valuers will assess your treasured items for free and will share their knowledge on their history. More info call: 0418 302 706.

To market, to market to buy a thingamajig
NOTHING like a rummage through an artists’ market to unearth a thingamajig of great beauty and substance. The Castlemaine Artists’ Market is held monthly, (this month on Sunday, November 4, 10am ‘til 3pm) and is well loved for its art, hand crafted loveliness, unique pieces with soul and beautiful thingamajigs for your home, wardrobe and life in general. The market is held in the laneway and bricked garden around the Theatre Royal, (Hargraves Street Castlemaine). Grab a coffee at the Theatre, and wander the stalls, (there are more than 45 of them, so make it a big coffee) chat to the artisans and makers and discover more about the pieces you fall in love with. If you’re somewhat of an organised freak - this is Christmas present central for the creative people in your life - you know, the ones who are really hard to buy for? - You will find something here. ONE OF the best things about being a kid was getting to go to your school fete. The cake stall was a highlight. The jaw achingly chewy toffees were in equal parts terrifying (especially with five wobbly teeth in your mouth) and brilliant (with five wobbly teeth in your mouth - hello... bring on the tooth fairy)! St Michael’s Primary School (29 Smith Street Daylesford), is holding their annual school fete on Saturday, November 4, from 9:30am until 3:30pm. It’s circus themed with carnival rides, pony rides, a sideshow alley, puppet show, circus acts, face painting, a silent auction, trash and treasure, a spinning wheel, prizes, games, a cake stall (fingers crossed for toffees) as well as produce, books and loads of fun and laughs for everyone. It’s a fascinator...
lost the guide to where to find it
...in a photofinish
WHAT IS it about horseracing that makes one put an overpriced feather on one’s head? This question remains one of the great mysteries of life. It is best not to ask, just to embrace and accept the practice, don the finery and hightail it to the racecourse! The NMIT Kyneton Cup (Wednesday, November 7,) is an important part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. (What else can one do betwixt Cup day and Oaks day?? Where shall one get their fix of fillies, frocks and fascinators, punting, pampering and prizes? KYNETON RACECOURSE that’s where!) Kyneton Racecourse (situated on Campaspe Place) is the oldest country racecourse in the state, with the first Kyneton Cup held in 1873. (Back in those days you probably had to ride a horse to get there, pfft, how’s the fascinator supposed to cope with that)? Nowadays there are marquees, roving live music and pampering sites, fashions on the field, a DJ, food court, and apparently even some horse races. The NMIT Kyneton Cup features a nine race program worth over $100,000 in prize money. Giddy up. The course is one of the most picturesque in Victoria, with grand old oaks and elms lining the banks of the Campaspe River. Perfect place to park a picnic banket and an esky for an afternoon of racing and fun with buddies. If you can’t make it to the Kyneton Cup, the racecourse offers a great day out for corporate and group Christmas parties. Friday, November 23, is Christmas Party Raceday. Book a marquee for your team of colleagues or friends and celebrate trackside. Entry to the course is $15, or there are many marquee packages available. The day is a huge celebration with live music and entertaiment and lots of Christmas cheer. Shuttle busses run to the course from Kyneton Station. General admission entry to the 2012 NMIT Kyneton Cup is $20. Gates open at 10am. For more information visit: countryracing.com.au and click Kyneton, or call 5422 1866. 22

PRIMARY school fundraisers have improved since the 80s. No to knock the good ol’ Lamington Drive, but we’d rather have a night out with friends than deal with hundreds of kilos of cake. Hepburn Primary hosts a Trivia Night fundraiser every two years. That’s two years of meticulous planning, organising, collecting (very awesome) auction items, and collating the juiciest trivia questions to quiz and bamboozle you in your weakened Friday night state. You are invited to gather ‘round the table with your heads full of useless (yet vital) trivia, Friday, November 9, from 7pm, at Hepburn Primary School Hall, (Main Road), to battle it out for prizes and (not so trivial) glory. (C’mon, we all know the real winners are the kids here, so dig deep, have a bit o’ fun with friends and raise some cash for Hepburn’s little school). BYO drinks and nibbles, (and lamingtons). Tickets are $15. To book a table call Nicole on: 5476 4113, or 0419 152 246.

A SPONGE cake is supposed to be as light as air, a mud cake the exact opposite. If you’ve attempted a Sponge, but it turned out more like its heavy cousin, help is at hand in Trentham town. Saturday, November 10, Trentham Neighbourhood Centre (High Street) is hosting a Spongecake Making Workshop. Your aproned guru, Marie Louise Stafford ,will show you the tips, tricks and Nana-know-how you’ll need for your Sponge to attain the heavenly feather-light gravity-defying attributes of sponge perfection. Bake your little hearts out 10am ‘til noon, then enjoy a slice with a cuppa (and afford yourself a little smug grin, knowing that you’ve joined the successful-sponge-baking-elite). take on the mountain FOR SOME, riding a pushie up Mount Macedon is akin to torture. However, some people dig a bit of torture... and will be pretty pumped to know there’s a Mount Macedon charity ride planned for Sunday, November 11. The Mount Macedon Challenge is a recreational ride open to serious riders to raise money for the Cancer Council of Victoria. There are two courses: the ‘short’ course is 83km, and the long course is 130km, both taking in the summit of the mountain - with some pretty spekky views to Melbourne and some magical countryside along the way. This is a new event, and features full mechanical and medical support, great on course entertainment and being in foodie central, some of the best stocked refreshment stops you’ll get in a ride anywhere. Contact Cycling Victoria for more info: 8480 3000 or visit: vic.cycling.org.au and click on Mount Macedon Challenge.

THE MACEDON Ranges Wine Region is oh-so-cool in so many ways. Of course you have your stunningly picturesque rolling green hills, strung with vines, and dotted with excruciatingly beautiful I-don’t-wanna-go-back-to-reality villages, (Cool? Oh yes.) And that other ‘cool’... as in, Winter-starts-in-Apriland-ends-in-late-September way. It’s the latter type of cool that gives the Macedon Ranges its Cool Climate Wine Region badge. And this time of year something magical happens, the vines awake from their Winter hibernation and burst forth with the first buds of the season. These teeny buds of the next vintage excite the winemakers (and wine lovers) all over the region. Those first green buds are cause for much celebration, so much so, that they get their very own festival. The Budburst Food and Wine Festival will be held Saturday, November 17, and Sunday, November 18, (10am-5pm) across the region at over 20 participating wineries. Buy a tasting glass for $15, and discover the wines of the region. Many of the acclaimed wines of these cool climes include award winning Chardonnays, Rieslings and Pinot Noirs. Compare Cabernet, Merlot and Shiraz, and heavenly blends. (A friendly reminder: just leave room in the boot for all the cases you’ll need to take home). Chefs from the finest restuarants in this gourmet wonderland have created delectable menus, meals, tasting plates and snacks to give you the complete Macedon Ranges food/wine experience. There are several wine dinners, lunches and degustations matched to new release and cellared wines at restaurants and wineries throughout the region. There will be live music at many venues and happy winemakers willing to share their latest drop and a yarn or two. For the full program of events, dinners, and wineries open (and most importantly... wines available), go to: macedonrangeswine.com.au/budburst-festival and download the program, maps and more info. There. That’s the weekend sorted. Now you just need to toss a coin to see who’ll be designated driver... Heads or tails? 30
Good old stuff
from the good old days THEY DON’T make ‘em like they used to. For pretty much everything, the previous statement is entirely true. Which is kind of why antiques are so super spesh. The Daylesford Antiques, Art and Collectables Fair (Saturday, November 17, and Sunday, November 18,) will feature pieces from around 1810 to 1940. Around 30 antique dealers, will have their quality antique furniture, art, china, glass and crystal, clocks and collectables on display and for sale. This is precious stuff, some of it two centuries old... (which really is amazing... what stuff have you bought lately that will still be around in 200 years? Probably not that flat screen telly hanging in the lounge huh?) The fair will be held at Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) 10am ‘til 5pm Saturday and 10am ‘til 4pm Sunday. There will also be wine tastings and sales from Passing Clouds. For more info go to: crownantiques.com.au or call Frank on: 9005 5602.

or something like that... BIKE riders are a special breed, and we’re not talking about your ride-to-workers, or the hipsters with flowing hair and wicker baskets, and we’re not talking about kids with spokey dokeys and training wheels. We’re talking about the logo-emblazoned-lycra-clad-espresso-sipping speeders. The lycra-ed ones will be whizzing by when The Annual Ballan Cycling Classic is held Sunday, November 18, all over roads throughout the Central Highlands region. This charity ride is held annually to raise funds for the local hospital, the CFA and Ballan Red Cross. There are four rides to choose from, everything from an easy 25ks, for families and novices, a 50k ride, a 100km ride and a gruelling 150 kilometre ride taking in a few hills, some spectacular scenery, and plenty of sore thighs at the end of it all. Cheer on the riders from Cowie Street Ballan, or squeeze into the lycra and enter! More info, entry fees and routes: ballancyclingclassic.com. au

A writers’ block party (can we get an invite?)
MOST people reckon they can write. Well, y’know, you go to school, you learn to write... Therefore... you CAN write. Right? Well, sort of. You don’t have to be a Poet Laureate to be able to throw a few words together, but if you often find your linguistic knickers in a knot, and get tongue-tied on paper, then perhaps a Creative Journaling Workshop can help smash that writer’s block. This one day session (Sunday, November 18) is designed to invigorate and inspire your writing. Give your tired mind a workout in a fun and informal environment, with life coach and poet Lisa D’Onofrio, and author Simmone Howell. A series of exercises will draw out that stubborn creativity and help you find clarity in your written work. The Creative Journaling Spring Workshop will be held at The Readers, 107 Vincent Street, Daylesford, 10am ‘til 3:30pm. Cost $120/$100 concession. For more information and bookings call: 0401 097 599.
All I want for Christmas
lost the guide to where to find it
is an Istra ham
BREAKFAST is the most important meal of the day. This can be directly attributed to one thing. Bacon. In this part of the world, bacon achieves new levels of awesomeness due to our friends down the road at Istra Smallgoods (36 Wheelers Hill Road, Musk). Istra has earned legendary status on brekky plates, in picnic hampers and on antipasto tasting plates everywhere, with their range of amazing hand cured pork products. (Think prosciutto, pancetta, salamis, afore mentioned bacon, chorizo, and out-of-this-world hams). With Christmas just a few weeks away, it’s time to order your Istra Christmas ham tickety tock! Orders will close early December. (They are seriously delish, we made one last year, got a bit excited at the deliciousness and made another one for new years eve. True.) Ham prices are $13.50per/kg on the bone or $15.70per/kg boneless. (Half and full sizes available.) Order at the farm shop or phone 5348 3382. 34
Big, ugly and unusual, LOVE late spring. The evenings are longer, the sun is warmer, and the endless menu of winter pumpkin soup is well behind us. Pumpkin is an autumn harvest vegie, and if you’re mad about a ladle of steaming pumpkiny goodness, well best you plant your seeds about now. The Diggers Club at the Garden of St Erth (Simmons Reef Road, Blackwood) has just packed away their Spring festival flags, but canny vegie gardeners ‘round these parts already have the Autumn Festival in their sights, as the Diggers Club holds a pumpkin growing competition in Autumn! The time is nigh to start sowing your seeds now, so your prize winning pumpkin is ribbon ready by Autumn. (Did you know the largest pumpkin ever grown was 667 KILOS! Sheesh! That’s a whole lotta soup). There will be prizes for the biggest, the ugliest and the most unusual. So get planting! More on the pumpkin growing comp call St Erth 5368 6514. 35

Silk, stainless steel,

and jousting with knitting needles CHAIN MAIL. Not the most practical of garments, particularly in an environment when you can get a little rusty in the rain. Enter: the impossible creativity, care and exquisite craftsmanship of the Japanese textile gurus at Habu.... Habu have expertly woven the finest stainless steel threads with silk to create a luxurious yarn, with a delicate touch and metallic gleam like nothing we’ve seen. (How do you think that brainstorm went down? “I know guys, we’ve got this delicate raw silk right? - Let’s mix a bit of metal in and see what happens!” Bonkers, but it totally works!) Basically what they’ve done here is created Couture Chain Mail. And boy is it stunning! Down at Village on Vincent (the little arcade at 21 Vincent Street, Daylesford) Renata, (and her alter ego Lulu-ThePassionate-Knitter), has just opened a teeny specialist yarn shop called Lulu Kane. Here she knits the most delicate scarves, garments and even jewellery from the finest yarns in the world. (Including an extensive collection of Habu yarns). Renata has collected kilometres of exquisite yarns from places as distant and diverse at Mongolia, Japan, the USA, the Himalayas, and Italy. These precious yarns are all for sale. The fibres are unique and quirky, with shiny copper and silk dyed in dusky hues, through to muted mohairs and vibrant silks and ramies. Renata has exhibited her knitted pieces in Melbourne and her items are for sale... (we’re talking serious wearable art here). Or, if you can drive a set of knitting needles, she’ll sell you the pattern for any of her garments and yarn in what ever colour you like, to create your own unique masterpiece. Or if you know a natty knitter and are organised enough to be thinking Christmas already, she’s also selling Knitting Sets, complete with pattern, yarn and sweet wooden needles as a gift for a crafty pal. (And don’t worry, they turn out more ‘runway ready’, than ‘knights of the round table’). Lulu Kane is shop 3 at Village on Vincent and is open Saturday and Sunday, 11am ‘til 4pm. For more information call Renata on: 0411 705 185.

Oh, to be a Judge... at a wine show!
DAYLESFORD is plonked on top of some pretty special dirt. Lovely red, volcanic-y dirt fed by special bubbly waters. Truly good stuff, that grows mighty fine grapes... and since we’re already talking about Red, Bubbles and Plonk, we might as well cut to the chase. The 11th Annual Daylesford Wine Show will judge around 250 of the best wines from the region this month. The winning wines will be showcased in a grand dinner at Lake House (4 King Street, Daylesford) Friday, November 23. The winning wines will be matched to an inspired menu of the finest local produce. Dinner is $110, call Lake House for reservations: 5348 3329. Saturday, November 24, each of the wines judged will be available to taste at the Daylesford Neighbourhood House (13 Camp Street) Entry is $5. Sample the regions’ wines at this stellar cellar door, and vote for your favourite in the People’s Choice award. Call Miranda for info: 5348 7825.
Summer lovin’...

lovin’ the CFA
SUMMER means good times. You get to take your jumper off for starters (which is a big deal around here), but not only that, it’s party time, with celebrations rolling on from Spring Racing ‘til Back To School. Boy we like to celebrate summer in Australia! In actual fact there are officially only TWO things that can’t be celebrated in Summer, and they are #1: Mosquitos, and #2: Fire Season. Fire Season is absolutely no laughing matter around here, and our CFA do a cracker (and significantly stressful) job looking after our communities this time of year. The Trentham CFA is extending their Fire Station, and are holding a Music Trivia night to help raise funds, Saturday, November 24, at the Trentham Footy Clubrooms. (Falls Road, Trentham). It’s $15 a head, (tables of 10), BYO supper, bar service and nibbles provided. Support the Trentham Brigade and get along for a fun night. 38

NOSTALGIA can strike when you least expect it. One moment you’re innocently sipping your latte, the next BAM, you’re neck deep in vintage. (Just a warning, this could happen to you folks... Particularly if you happen to be wandering down Vincent Street Daylesford). Brick Lane Bazaar (at number 34 Vincent) is a new treasure trove of retro relics and marvellous memorabilia. There are 30 stallholders, and their wares are displayed from floor to ceiling, with everything from seventies sunglasses to Michelin men, industria, vintage fashion, vinyl records, old signs, funky furniture, flash trash and kitsch, teeny tiny porcelain animals (eeee! cuteness!) or browse the books for an escapist weekend read. Brick Lane Bazaar is open 7 days a week 10am until 5pm. For more information check out their Facebook page (search Brick Lane Bazaar Daylesford) or phone: 5348 3500. 40
Wooden spoons at 30 paces... it’s a good ol’ fashion bake off!

WHAT IS the point of having a sweet country hall if you can’t host a Bake-Off we ask? The close community of cakelovers at Lyonville (just a few ks out of Daylesford) love their little hall, and boy do they love their cake. The locals are tying on the aprons and setting the ovens to 180 degrees for the tastiest battle ever. Icing shall be slathered, crumbs scrutinised and ganaches um.. ganached. It’ll be cut-throat, and freakin’ delicious. The annual Lyonville Bake Off (Sunday, November 18) is open to anyone in the region who fancies themselves a bit of a baker, with categories such as scones, big and little cakes, slices, savoury pastries, and a kid’s section. If you are entering, drop your cake off at 10:30am, or just hit the hall (Bremner Avenue, Lyonville) from 11am to score a piece (ha!) of the action. Buy a slice, a whole cake or Devonshire tea, with all proceeds going to the upkeep of the cutest hall in the region. For more info call Shirley on 5348 5690.
