An arty party long weekend

IT’S no secret that the region is home to oodles of artists. Tucked away in their studios smudged with paint, ink and clay the artistic ones among us have been busy this year, creating great works for the annual Daylesford Art Show. This show has been held for 27 years, and is a major event on the town’s calendar. Held each year over the Melbourne Cup long weekend, the event celebrates the wonderfully talented artists we have in the region, and showcases their super-awesome work. The art show will be held at the Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street). Opening night is Friday, November 1, from 6pm ‘til 8:30pm. This is a private ticketed event (tickets are $20 and available from the website – details below). Meet the artists and tell them how much you love their work, (they love that stuff,) then buy a piece (they love that even more). Opening night is your chance to take a sneak peek of the works for sale before the exhibition opens to the general public. (It’s the very first chance to place dibs on a piece you like, so if you want to buy a piece of fabulous contemporary local art, grab a ticket to opening night!) Wander the works with a glass of wine, whilst the very talented Meredith Borlin plays the piano for everyone, and keep your eyes peeled for a work of art for the bare walls at home. The works will be judged by Gordon Morrison (Director of the Ballarat Art Gallery) and there will be a people’s prize as well. The prize for each of the five categories judged is $500. The Art Show will be open to the public Saturday, November 2, ‘til Monday, November 4. It’s a hugely popular event, well regarded around the state as a contemporary, friendly, high quality exhibition, and a bit of a ‘must-see’ in the eyes of many art buyers. Last year almost 400 paintings were on display. Entry to the exhibition is by gold coin donation. The Art Show is open Saturday and Sunday 10am – 5pm, and Monday 10am – 2pm. For more information and to buy opening night tickets go to daylesfordartshow.com.au. 2

Dear Italy,

thanks for the tic tacs

Thank you Italy. Thank you for everything. Y’know… all that stuff like Bocconcini, Nutella and Ferraris. Thank you for your commitment to fashion, to industrial design, to architecture, and that whole cultural movement called, um what was it again? Oh yes that’s right… The Renaissance. And thank you for the shoes. Oh the shoes. Italy, we love you. And just between you and us, we’re all just a little bit rapt with ourselves that this region shares a little bit of Italian heritage too. The Swiss and Italian Festa is on until Sunday, November 3. It is a celebration of the first European settlers to the region. There are many parties, performances, and parades held for young and old across the five day event. Saturday, November 2, and Sunday, November 3, The Daylesford Hotel welcomes the grown ups partial to a little convivial to partake in the Italian tradition of Aperitivo at sunset on the balcony of the old hotel. Ahh the age-old tradition of a bevvie with friends before dinner. If the Italians can claim that tradition we are more than happy to embrace it and help them honour the tradition. Salute. From the broad Daylesford Hotel balcony you overlook town, and beyond to the north, out over the hills, as the sun sinks. It’s all a bit gorgeous really… Sip a Prosecco, try a couple of Italian beers or a zippy Aperol Spritz with friends. Saturday, November 2, the hotel will host a wine tasting afternoon from 4pm-6pm featuring Italian varietals, grown and produced in Australia. The tasting will be held in the Hotel Wine Store with Christian Del Zotto. Sunset Aperitivo will be held both days from 5pm – 7pm, (but we think it really should be held more often… hmmm a summer-time tradition perhaps? Organise it with your friends.) The Daylesford Hotel is at 2 Burke Square. For more information on the events download the program at swissitalianfesta.com, or go to daylesfordhotel.com.au. To book dinner for after Aperitivo call the hotel: 5348 2335. Ps: Italy really did invent tic tacs. 4

Lyons and Leppards spotted in Glenlyon

THE LYON LEPPARD is not a mysterious panther-like-catcreature sometimes sighted in the Dandenongs, nor is it related to the 80s rock band, although we’re sure that in their most private moments they like to rock out to a bit of Hysteria… (who doesn’t?) Lyon Leppard are dynamic duo Nicolas Lyon and Meryl Leppard – (hence the name, see no panthers or mullets in sight). Nicolas is a multi talented, multi instrument skilled, multi genre defying, multi gifted muso with a penchant for stringed things, and Meryl has travelled the world over from off Broadway to off the beaten track – the latter leading them both to The Old Glenlyon General Store, (63 Barkly Street). They will bring their energetic blend of awesome tunes to The General: Friday, November 1, from 7pm. Ease into your weekend vibe at the General with Lyon Leppard. For more info facebook.com/GlenlyonGeneralStore or call 5348 7922.

The Symphony of spring

STOP what you’re doing for a moment and tune your ears to the sounds of spring… What’s that you hear? A cute little birdie? Happy lambs frolicking in the meadows? No. Most likely you’ll hear the din of a fleet of mowers, the incessant whirr of the whipper snipper, and the most vexing of ALL sounds… (yes, more annoying than a 1D earworm) …some loser on a leaf blower. But suck it up, as Spring is as visually gorgeous as it is aurally annoying. So gorgeous is spring, that many garden owners are throwing open their garden gates for all to come and enjoy their verdant spring beauty. Sunday, November 3, there are four very different gardens open for all to enjoy: Stafford Garden - 47 Frazer Street Daylesford, Lansdowne - 5401 Midland Hwy, Dry Diggings, Daylesford House - 8 Smith Street, and 88 West Street Daylesford. Open 11am-4pm. Entry $5 each garden. More info at swissitalianfesta.com or call 0467 166 982. 6

Welcome to

the inner sanctum

YOU’D have to be from another planet not to be aware of the multitude of wonderfully talented artists producing incredible works of fine art in this region. But, just incase you’ve flown in from Neptune for the weekend; welcome! … and boy do we have a treat for you. The first two weekends in November have been set aside for the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Open Studios event. (Saturday, November 2, ‘til Tuesday, November 5, and the following weekend: Saturday, November 9, and Sunday, November 10.) Thirty five artists will throw open the doors of their creative havens and welcome you into their inner sanctums: their studios. It is a privilege to meet the artists and talk about their creative processes, their inspiration and their work in their personal studio space. Participating artists include many who have pieces in permanent collections at major galleries throughout Australia, others work you will be familiar with, some you’ll be in awe of, and some you’ll fall in love with. To try to negotiate the lengthy Art Trail and visit all 35 studios across the two weekends would be challenging, so a great place to start is St Paul’s Anglican Church Hall (26 Yaldwyn St, Kyneton). The Hall will be the Hub for the event and will showcase works from each of the 35 artists. From there, pick a studio tour encompassing several towns and picturesque drives through the countryside, or design your own dream studio tour. The Hub at St Paul’s (and studios) will be open 10am -5pm each day. The artists chosen to participate in the Open Studios program were selected by an expert curatorial panel. This event (now in its second year) promises to grow and become a must-do event on any art lover’s calendar… (just quietly, we think it is already.) Be part of the social media broadcast using the #dmros13 hashtag across the event. For more info on which artists are participating, must-have maps, and artist profiles go to dmropenstudios.com.au or pick up a program at a visitor information centre. 8

Fireworks

in the bush

APART from dogs and toddlers who doesn’t love fireworks huh? No one in the known universe that’s who. So Hepburn and Daylesford locals are a little thrilled that this time of year it’s our turn to light up the sky with a truck load of explosives. The end of the annual Swiss and Italian Festa means it’s fireworks time. The annual Lantern Parade and Fireworks Finale is totally comparable to Sydney Harbour on new year’s eve, (sure we don’t have an Opera House, a harbour or a big bridge… apart from that… totally the same… - go with it…) The lantern parade and fireworks tradition is ours and we love it, and we’d love you to join us, so if you’re in the ‘hood on Sunday, November 3, tie up your dogs and look skyward for the grand Swiss Italian firework finale! The event is one of the most bestest favouritest things on the local kiddies’ calendar too. Each year the kids from around the region do workshops at school to create beautiful little hand made lanterns especially for this event. From 7:45pm on Sunday the 3rd, the kiddos (and families) will meet at Tenth Street, Hepburn Springs (near Cosy Corner), light up their pretty lanterns and take the stroll through the bush to Mineral Springs Reserve on dusk. The lanterns are a flashback to the mining days where at night the miners would carry a candle to light their way through the bush, back to camp. It’s a beautiful sight and a wonderful community event. On arrival at Mineral Springs Reserve, the families gather on picnic blankets with hot chocolate and coffees, the kids cut loose with a bit of chasey in the dark, The Cider House Band will be playing, and once the sun is well and truly down, fireworks will light the sky. Weeeeee Ahhhhhhh. For more info on the lantern parade and fireworks finale go to swissitalianfesta.com. This event is overseen by Hepburn CFA volunteers. Please park in Main Road, Hepburn Springs. BYO Lantern. This is a free event for all. 10

Buying art

for art’s sake

THE CASTLEMAINE State Festival is one of the most important arts events in Victoria. Feathers and fascinators, hats, heels and hooves

MILLINERS are the big winners during the Spring Racing Carnival. Winning big on a punt that something geometricin-skyscraper-tangerine will come from behind to win by a feather at the post. In fact, we’re pretty sure, that (after the owners of the winning horses), milliners take home the most cash on race day. Hats are, indeed, a mandatory accessory at the races. (Fascinators, yes, ok, we’ll include you in this too… even though you win the Stupidest Name For An Accessory Prize). And if you’re gifting your hard-earned to a Milliner this spring racing carnival, you’ll want bang for your buck. The $100,000 NMIT Kyneton Cup is an awesome day of country racing, held on Wednesday, November 6. (Oh yes, you’ll be backing it up the day after the big one.) So if your feathers are still flouncy, poised and plumed, and don’t look like they’ve been mauled by a cat after a big day at the Melbourne Cup, giddy up and head to NMIT Kyneton Park (Campaspe Place) for a great day of racing, showing off and fun. The event is one of the biggest on the Macedon Ranges calendar, drawing about 6000 punters through the gates each year. (Do the sums, that’s a lot of hats…) The race itself is over 2000 metres, and the day is recognised as being a major part of the Spring Racing Week, and is a great day out between Flemington frivolities. Kyneton Park is one of the most picturesque racecourses in Victoria, lined with 100+ year old oaks and elms, on the banks of the Campaspe River. Find a perfect picnic place in the shade with friends, to catch up and have a flutter and some bubbles, or a punt and a beer, depending on which way you rock the races. Entry to the Kyneton Cup costs from $20 (prepaid, book tickets online) or $25 at the gate on the day. There are all manner of marquee packages available as well. For all the information on the 2013 NMIT Kyneton Cup (including maps, transport information, and ticketing) go to countryracing. com.au and click on Spring Racing. 14

Grow. Cook. Eat.

a recipe for great kids

IF THERE’S one thing this region is well known for, it would have to be the high quality of the local produce. (Oh… ok, and the arts culture, and the romance of the landscape, and the mineral springs, and the day spas, and the wombats, and the gourmet everything and general gorgeousness of it all. Ok, so the whole package is pretty special.) Indeed you’d be a lucky kiddo to grow up in this neck of the woods. The kids at Daylesford Primary School get a first hand education in the goodness and deliciousness of the region, as the school participates in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program. The patron of the DPS Kitchen is none other than Alla Wolf-Tasker (think Lake House... yep, lucky kids). The primary school has been planting, growing, harvesting and cooking up a storm for three years now, and this year the kids, Alla, and kitchen wiz Andrew Stone, offer up their first publication: Grow. Cook. Eat. This super special glossy cookbook offers more than 80 fun and simple recipes created by the kids at Daylesford, with a little help from Alla, Andrew and Stephanie Alexander. It features lots of tips and tricks and deliciousness to create in your kitchen. And every single cent of sales goes straight back to the Kitchen Garden program at Daylesford Primary! Ahh isn’t it a beautiful circle?! Grow. Cook. Eat. is $29.95 and available from Daylesford Tourist Information Centre (98 Vincent St) Daylesford Primary School (Vincent St), and Wombat Hill House Café (Botanic Gardens Daylesford - enter via Central Springs Rd). And because our organically grown Daylesford kids are so well mannered they all say a huge big Bon Appetit and THANK YOU in advance. xx

A whole life

of worldly words

WHEN we hit 90+ years of age we’re pretty sure we’d be happy to sit around with a cuppa and some Monte Carlos and complain about teenagers’ low slung jeans. Not so for one inspired nonagenarian in our midst. Venie Holmgren is an accomplished Australian poet who has recently moved into her new home in Hepburn. Venie has performed her work in pubs, cafes, prisons and environmental and peace rallies all over the world. Nowadays she performs in Central Victoria and just published her seventh collection of poems: The Tea House Poems, loosely based on the Japanese Tanka style. The book is a personal reflection on a winter of discontent, whilst waiting for her home to be finished (ahh don’t we all love to complain about that… bet those tradies had low slung jeans as well). The Tea House Poems is $15 and can be purchased at Paradise Books (46 Vincent St Daylesford) Book Barn at Lake Daylesford, or at lulu.com. 16

Inspired souls

inspiring creativity

KIM PERCY and Morgan Williams are an inspired duo in all aspects of their creative lives. At work they are Designscope, a local graphic design and brand building company. As the digital age eats away at their time for handson artistic pursuits, they recently shut the laptops, switched off the iPhones (gasp!) and headed north, paint brushes and cameras in hand for an artist residency at Gunyah near Port Stephens, NSW. The resulting work is organic and inspired, and well removed from the weekdays’ regular pixels, home pages and business cards. Kim and Morgan are hosting a Gunyah Residency Art Exhibition at Designscope (13 Knox Street, Daylesford) to show the works they created: Monday, November 11, ‘til Friday, November 15, (10am-4pm), with a special Opening Night event to be held Friday, November 8, 5pm-7pm. Come and view Kims’ striking and deeply layered paintings, and a series of photographs of Morgan’s creative venture, his temporal works on land, which makes a beautiful and confronting commentary on environment, (and we assure you, you won’t look at the humble plastic lid the same way ever again). For more information and to RSVP for opening night call Designscope 5348 1199. Read more about their Gunyah residency at designscope.com.au/blog/

Bragging rights

for the disorganised

THERE are some people walking among us today who have completed all their Christmas shopping. No, no, don’t scoff… It’s true. These hideously organised individuals gloat and hair-toss and brag that their gifts are wrapped and bowed and ready to be gently placed under the tree on December 24, as they quaff egg-nog and sing along to Marina Prior as she belts out Oh Come All Ye Faithful on the carols on the telly. Well here at lost we’re blowing those people a big fat raspberry. They were too organised for their own good and have missed the Maldon Market. Ner-ner. The Maldon Market will be held on Fountain Street, on the second Sunday of every month (starting Sunday, November 10). The stalls will bow with home made and home grown treats and gifts, gourmet food and crafts, jewellery, clothes and art. There’ll be delish food and coffee, live music and stuff for the kids too. Info 5475 2093 or andrafisher@hotmail.com.

It’s Friday night

let’s get ridiculous

ECLECTIC is an appropriate description of Ms Kirsten Boerema and her dynamic duo of kooky musos Michael and Myles. Together they are Bella Frisky, and they create musical madness, from Bizet to Britney, tango to Tarantella, Russian to ridiculous. And who doesn’t need a bit of ridiculous (minus Redfoo) on a Friday night? Bella Frisky will bring their diverse assortment of tunes to the Glenlyon General Store (63 Barkly Street) Friday, November 15, from 7pm. Bella Frisky sets the Friday night vibe to awesome with a playlist sourced from around the globe: a bit of Klezmer, some gypsy jazz, a smidge of operatic and a bit of Yma Sumac thrown in there for good measure. (Google her, amazing!) Kirsten sings in many languages, and the boys play wicked clarinet, glockenspiel and ukulele. Good fun. For more info on happy hour and Friday nights at The General call 5348 7922 or visit their Facey page: facebook.com/GlenlyonGeneralStore. 20

Dig deep for clay

ART and indulgence. Sums up Daylesford in a nutshell really. There is an exceptional collective of ceramicists and clay lovers living in our creative ‘hood. They call themselves The Daylesford Region Ceramics Co-Operative, AKA Clayspace. Clayspace is an inclusive group of artists dedicated to making objects out of clay. The work they create is truly beautiful, and the ethos of the group is likewise just as awesome. As a collective they have created a studio for all to share, (at the Door 3 Studios at East Street, Daylesford) with a view to making the space a creative hub for all, to hold weekly clay meetings, workshops, and a place to learn and share skills, inspiration and love for the ancient art itself. Currently, Clayspace is fundraising to complete the studio with kilns. (Hoorah!) To help boost the fundraising they are hosting an evening of Art and Indulgence at the Door 3 Studios, Saturday, November 9. Many artists have donated pieces of work and local businesses have generously offered indulgent items that will go to auction on the night. The Door 3 Studio is open from 4pm for a viewing of auction items, and the auction kicks off at 5:30pm. (There are pieces by Minna Graham, Petrus Spronk, Kim Haughie, Tony Barnes, Belinda Michael, Tunde Miekle, Kath Wratten, Mark Cowie, Desiree Radi Mansbridge, Stefan Nechwatal, Georgia Harvey and others all going under the hammer, (not literally‌ clearly that would be a bad idea in a ceramics studio). Come along and bid on something beautiful and help the local creative community, or just have a glass of wine, enter the door prize and listen to a bit of live music. For more information on the Clayspace Art and Indulgence Auction telephone Belinda on 0428 723 024, or for up-todate event details and happenings send an email to info@clayspace-coop.com or send some love to the page at: facebook.com/ClayspaceDaylesfordRegionCeramicsCooperative

Eat Drink Love Local so very Cosmopolitan

SINCE the days of horses and carts The Cosmopolitan Hotel (Cnr High St and Cosmo Rd Trentham) has welcomed and wined and dined thirsty locals and visitors to town. From the exterior you’d guess that not much has changed since 1866, and you’d pretty much be right. A fire ravaged the interior of the hotel in 2005, and after a few lost years, and a few years of hard work, the old pub has been rebuilt and refurbished, with a new bar (still baring a few charcoal-y scars) a new lounge and dining room, and a new garden deck. And it’s this time of year when the garden comes to life. The Cosmo beer garden could, very well, be beer garden perfection. The sprawling outdoor area is shaded by two magical 100+ year old elms, and tucked in under the branches is a stage where live music entertains the sun soaked garden audience each Sunday from 1pm. The great outdoors at The Cosmo is not limited to the beer garden, with an acre of sprawling gardens that have responded well to restoration after years of neglect. There are secret spots and a private lawn, which would be a fab space for a wedding, oh yes, The Cosmo does functions. (Yay!) The old pub can cater for small parties of 40 in a private dining room, to 65 in the restored stables, to 125 seated in a marquee, just ask. (We’re thinking Christmas parties… how awesome.) Chef Peter Ojansuu has whipped up a fab menu for lunch and dinner (Friday to Sunday, and soon to be Thursdays) and meals can be enjoyed with the best wines from the Macedon Ranges wine region (…and if you like what you had with your meal, you can always buy a bottle to take away… which is slightly awesome, we can never remember what that fab wine was, so perfectly matched at lunch.) The locals love The Cosmo, and The Cosmo loves them right back with the Friday night meat tray raffle, and the monthly loot going to a local community group. The Cosmo is open from midday Friday-Sunday. To find out who’s playing the next Sunday sesh, and for more info go to thecosmopolitanhotel.com.au or call 5424 1516. lost the guide to where to find it

Saluting the

pigeon hole defiers

TO BE genre defying is really difficult. As humans we just looooove to shoe-horn things into neat little pigeon holes where they damn well belong. The Brow Horn Orchestra have put their collective feet down and said a resounding NO to us humans and our relentless pigeon holing. (Yay! Go Brow Horn!) This five piece from Perth blends brass and beats, hip hop and dance-demanding electronic pop with an effervescent energy that is more catchy than chicken pox. (And less itchy.) BHO are bringing their awesomely unique sound to The Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road) Sunday, November 17, from 3pm. They have played alongside the world’s best at festivals around the country (oh y’know, just those little festivals... you might’ve heard of them: Big Day Out, Groovin the Moo, Future, etc etc) So when they hit the Old Hep stage they promise to bring a souped up Sunday session for all time. For more info call the pub on 5348 2207.

Wordsmiths

slamming beautiful words

SOME peeps have a way with words. Some peeps wouldn’t contemplate using the word peeps. But it’s easier to rhyme than people. People, steeple, zreeple, fleeple… see? Anyway. Those among us who eat dictionaries for brekkie are madly collating their wonderful words into some semblance of poetry greatness for the next Pipe Up Poetry Slam – to be held at Stockroom (98 Piper Street, Kyneton) on Friday, November 22. Poetry Slam #4 will feature the masterful wordy arrangements of Abdul Hammoud and many others as they take to the mic to inspire you, and make you feel… something. (Certainly they will make you feel like you don’t know how to use the English language proper, like, evs, lol.) Abdul is an Australian Poetry Champion. He is launching his latest chapbook, ‘When the Dust Settles’ His words will move you. The slam kicks off at 6:30pm. For more info visit: Facebook.com/PipeUpPoetry. 26

Green with envy

over glorious gardens

IF WE had a legion of lawn mowers pushed by an army of gardeners there is still no way the spring grass could be tamed. Which is why, we think, that Paul Bangay might actually be magic. Paul Bangay is kind-of-like an Australian landscape designer superhero… (His superpower is whippersnippers come out of his hands and he vanquishes weeds to another realm with lasers from his eyes.) Actually, Paul is a much celebrated garden guru (minus the cape) and has had his hand (and gumboots) in many a beautiful landscape around the globe. Paul has a property close to Daylesford at Denver, called Stonefields. Once a year he opens the garden gates for all to admire his superpowers (um, handiwork) around his stunningly landscaped seven acre garden. (Yes. SEVEN acres …and you can’t even mow your nature strip... Tsk tsk. Yes, we’re talking about you.) Saturday, November 23, and Sunday, November 24, you are invited to visit Stonefields which includes terraced parterres, a white garden, blue perennial entrance borders, an apple walk, circular woodland garden, a walled rose garden, a rear terrace with sweeping country views, twin pool lawns and his ‘humble’ vegie patch. (Wow.) The Stonefields Open Garden is a fundraiser for the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. Entry is $20 (no eftpos). The garden will be open from 10am-4:30pm both days. Throughout the weekend both Stephanie and Paul will be available for book signings and there will be scones, coffee and plants available to purchase throughout the day. This weekend will also see Stuart Rattle’s wonderful Musk Farm open to the public as well. (This beautiful private garden is just seven minutes from Daylesford at Musk.) Enjoy a BBQ, boutique wines, local produce, cakes and plants for sale. (Entry $20. Proceeds to The Botanic Gardens at Wombat Hill) For more info and to pre-purchase tickets go to kitchengardenfoundation.org.au or to take a sneak peek at Pauls’ gardens go to paulbangay.com. 28

Great balls of fire

(goodness gracious)

FIRE season is a scary reality for those who live in the region. All summer we keep half an ear on ABC local radio and half an eye on the horizon looking for plumes of smoke. So when the annual Lyonville Fireman’s Ball rolls around we’d like you all to know about it and dig deep! The Lyonville CFA is fundraising for a brand spankin’ new shiny red fire truck, and the Fireman’s Ball is a super fun way to help to make this happen! This year the theme is ‘50s Rock ‘n Roll. Saturday, November 23, dress up in your ‘50s best and head to Lyonville Hall (Bremner Avenue) from 6:30pm. There’ll be a gourmet BBQ supper and a full bar, classic ‘50s tunes by local band the Single Spinners, raffles, auctions, lucky door prizes, a bit of tin shaking and a bit of booty shaking on the dance floor too. Tickets $35. For more info and bookings call Vicki Jackson 0438 178 150, or buy them from Radio Springs Hotel or Trentham Takeaway.

Posies and bunches in your backyard

THE dirt around here, in the paddocks, backyards and, well, under your feet (yes, by all means, look down and admire it) is fertile luscious stuff. Most of us locals have vegie patches, or at least rogue parsley sprouting up in the backyard, and there are roadside trees heavy with fruit just begging you to help yourself to at harvest time… but the good dirt doesn’t just produce fab things to eat, it also grows great flowers… naww… pretty. If you dream of picking bunches of blooms from your garden but would like a few tips to get started, the Diggers at St Erth (Simmons Reef Road, Blackwood) are hosting a Flower Garden workshop on Sunday, November 24, from 11am-12:30pm. Take a tour of St Erth’s perennial flower gardens with perennial expert Chris Colligan and start planning your summer garden now. Workshop costs $35 ($25 for Diggers members) For more info and bookings go to diggers.com.au or book by calling St Erth on 5368 6514. 30

The Ugly Uncles

and The Fools on the Hill

WINEMAKERS can be serious folk, all this talk about baume and terroir and lees and blah-de-blah. So it’s always refreshing to meet a winemaker who can talk the blah-de-blah, but still have a bit of fun with it. After all, it’s wine we’re talking about here, something to be shared, and celebrated and enjoyed! Graeme and Cameron Leith at Passing Clouds Winery know how to celebrate the launch of their new release wines, and their Annual Wine Release day is indeed a celebration for all. Saturday, November 23, bring a picnic, your friends and your craziest hat (more on that later) and celebrate the release of the new Passing Clouds vintages, and the launch of two new award winners. The Macedon Syrah and the CA Cabernet. Oooohhh! Exciting! The Leith lads have been working on something extra special this year, while the vines have been sleeping during winter, and the Annual Wine Release day will also double as a launch party for their new premium label ‘The Fools on the Hill’. Brilliant. (Passing Clouds winery is indeed, on a hill… but they’re certainly no fools when it comes to winemaking, James Halliday just awarded the winery 5 stars… again.) The wine release will be a party for all, with a fave local chef cooking up a delicious lunch, and The Ugly Uncles in their loudest shirts playing tunes to get everyone dancing on the lawn... Now, about the hats… Everyone who knows Graeme knows he’s partial to a crazy hat. This year the challenge is on to beat Graeme at his own game, so BYO crazy hat. There will be prizes... (Come on… surely that overpriced fascinator can get another run! Or create something entirely new! Go for it!) Entry to the release day and tastings are free. Passing Clouds is at 30 Roddas Lane, Musk. (Just a few minutes out of Daylesford on the Trentham Road) For up to the minute info on the event visit Facebook.com/PassingClouds.Daylesford, for more info on the wines and winery call call 5348 5550 or go to passingclouds.com.au. 32

Paddocks of

peony perfection

PEONIES are pretty special flowers. You can’t just grow them anywhere y’know… in fact, there are only a couple of pockets of land in Victoria where they’re happy to thrive and show off their incredible spring blooms year after year. And guess what… lucky us, there’s a peony pocket around here! There’s no secret formula, no magic fairy dust to make them bloom… It has everything to do with our heavy wintery frosts, so effectively, the pay off for the months of freezingness is bunches and bunches of wonderful spring peonies. And you know what? We think that’s a fair trade. After months of winter hibernation, the paddocks of peonies at The Spring Hill Peony Farm (1385 KynetonSpring Hill Road) have woken up and they are blooming in great abundance and generally doing their beautiful thing. Saturday, November 23, ‘til Saturday, November 30, the Spring Hill Peony Farm opens the gates to all to visit during the very special Peony Paddock Open Week. Entry is $20, (which includes 20 stems from the paddock - BYO secateurs) or $5 just to view. Bring a picnic to enjoy among the blooms or there will be food and wine stalls available on the 23rd and 24th. Enjoy Annie Smithers’ famous jam donuts and coffee, or cheese platters and antipasto, pies and quiches from Monsieur Pierre… delish! Open 10am – 4pm daily. Cash sales only. Sturdy shoes advised. For more info go to springhillpeonyfarm.com.au (psst… and if you’re getting married, check out the Little Church on the property while you’re there, imagine it filled with your favourite people and a bazillion peonies! Ahh! Wedding perfection!)

Mr. Ed’s

in Victorian threads

THE Cosmopolitan Hotel (High St Trentham) is an iconic old weatherboard pub, built smack-bang in the middle of the Victorian era. So it makes perfect poetic sense that the splendid Mr. Ed’s Victorian Emporium has recently opened at the side of the Cosmo. The Emporium is a rich and eclectic collection of mostly pre-WW2 clothing, shoes and accessories. Cate (who runs the store and is most definitely reincarnated from that era) searches tirelessly for her Victorian treasures and collects for those also in love with the era. Her collection (including uniforms, shoes, boots, coats, fur, hats and bling) is a treasure trove of real clothes worn in the era, and would make for some stylin’ Collins Street office wear today. The velvets are plush and luxurious, the suit stitching immaculate, and all her items are in great condition. Mr. Ed’s is open whenever you see the big horse head out the front, (Friday-Sunday, 10am-5pm). 35

A bird’s eye view in Castlemaine

BIRDS are everywhere. They tweet and flap and strut and soar from the coldest corners of the globe to the highest skyscrapers in the busiest cities. They are musical and magical and full of character and beauty. (That is unless you suffer from ornithophobia, in which case birds are scary-evilfeathered-flappy-things with pecky beaks and beady eyes.) But for those more fond of our feathered friends, we have an artful treat in store for you. Local printmaker Bridget Farmer, and Melbourne artist Kyoko Imazu both love birds, and they honour them in their beautiful skillful etchings, aquatints and mixed media work. Bridget loves all manner of birdies, (and several species show up in her work) but she has a particular fondness for finches… those cute, chubby, happy little birdies that bounce on your grass and make teeny tseep-tseep noises in your trees. Bridget’s work is sketchy with lots of movement, and really captures the cheeky persona and energy of these little birds. Kyoko’s work is textured and detailed, with rich colours and lots of depth. Both artists have wanted to exhibit together for ages. Their show: ‘The Bird Room’ is on now until Sunday, November 24, at Falkner Gallery, 35 Templeton Street Castlemaine. Also showing at Falkner is Lee Shelden’s Drawn Threads. Lee’s exhibition is a series of intricate and exquisitely detailed drawings of fabrics and textures up close. Upstairs, Ian Clark is exhibiting The Absence of Drama, a series of bold and graphic paintings, linocuts and drawings. The Falkner Gallery is open Thursday - Sunday 11am ‘til 5pm. For more information on the gallery and a sneak preview of some of the works on display, go to falknergallery.com.au. More info phone: 5470 5858. Bridget will also be participating in the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Open Studios. For more info go to dmropenstudios.com.au. For more information on which birds are endemic to Central Victoria go to birdlife.org.au. 36
