An open invitation
lost the guide to where to find it
to the inner sanctum of creativity
2
THE Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region is home to a wealth of amazingly diverse and talented professional artists. These painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers, ceramicists, mosaic artists and drawing artists beaver away in their private studios throughout the region, day in, day out - creating, creating, creating. This month they are sharing with us mere mortals their inner sanctums, their creative havens, their personal studios as part of the Daylesford Macedon Ranges Open Studios program. You are invited to visit the studios of twenty-seven of the finest artists to live and work in our region. Across three weekends this month (Saturday, October 31, and Sunday, November 1 / Saturday, November 7, and Sunday, November 8, / and Saturday, November 14, and Sunday, November 15,) the artists will throw open their studio doors and chat to you about their work, their inspirations and processes and you might even get a sneak peak at a masterpiece in the making! With twenty-seven open studios to visit, it’s important to plan your art-trek. A great place to start is the group exhibition at the official DMROS Hub in Kyneton at St. Paul’s Anglican Church Hall, 26 Yaldwyn St. Each artist has a piece on display here so you’ll get a feel for their work before you visit the studio. (Gold coin on entry.) Maps and programs will be available at the Kyneton hub too. If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed with all the artists’ studios to visit, you can always book a spot on the Guided Studio Tour Bus (departs twice daily from the hub and Kyneton Railway Station. Cost $10. Bookings essential by email: dmrosbusbookings@gmail.com). Make a weekend of it and tour the villages and towns throughout the region, maybe take in a winery, but leave space in the boot for a work of art (or three) to come home with you! For more information and to download the 2015 Artists Guidebook (includes maps and artist info) go to dmropenstudios.com.au LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

LIVE music is something Australia does really well. We have an international reputation as being able to BRING IT when it comes to bands taking the stage, whether it’s a small club, a festival, a dirty pub gig, a stage at a schmancy winery, or in your mate’s backyard. Dan Sultan is a veteran of all of the above and is about to hit the road to test out some new tunes and support the OpenLIVE music platform (it’s very cool, it’s a live music recording thingy, where a mixed and mastered recording of the gig can be produced almost instantly after the performance! Aceness!) Dan Sultan will hit the stage at The Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves St. Castlemaine) Friday, November 13, 8pm. This is your chance to see one of the best live performers in the country up close and personal. Tickets are $39.80 from Oztix.com.au. For more info go to theatreroyalcastlemaine.com.au or call 5472 1196.

RIGHT now is peak picnic season. The grass is green, squishy and lush, the sun is high and warm, and the days are long and lazy. Time to unearth the picnic blanket and find a perfect possy under a magnificent old tree and laze and graze the afternoon away with your favourites. Piper Street Food Co. (89A Piper Street, Kyneton) has recently launched picnic packs, ready to fill with their delicious range of handcrafted charcuterie, (terrines, rillets, pates, etc), pies, (oh those cold pork pies!! LOVE!) as well as pickled bits and delicious condiments, breads and drinks. They can help you pick a perfect picnic pack (say that three times fast) or you can choose your own bits to go. They even come in the cutest little picnic box compete with a local map with suggestions on where to eat your picnic (we recommend under an ancient elm at the Kyneton Botanic Gardens – picnic perfection)! our great little community

ANYONE who lives here will attest to the fact that we have an amazing little community here in Daylesford. And this month the community will come together and celebrate what’s great at the Daylesford Community Fair: Sunday, November 15. The Community Fair will be held at the Community Park (The Skate Park) down the bottom of Stanbridge Street, from midday ‘til 3pm. It will be a fantastic opportunity to connect and engage with various community groups throughout the town. This year the Community Fair will feature music from the local Brass Band, Daylesford Primary School Choir, and three bands from the Daylesford secondary school, as well as a few other performances and musical surprises. Mr. Ants and The Urban Fairy will be roving through the crowds entertaining young and old. There’ll be local art, kids activities, (including Story Time lead by Hepburn Library staff and fun face painting) workshops, a jumping castle, real chai tea and great coffee as well as fresh fruit supplied by U3A and other food stalls. Connect with local groups through workshops and learn something new; the CFA will discuss fire safety coming into summer, The Friends of Cornish Hill will be there to chat to about their progress and exciting plans just over the hill from the Community Park, and the Community Park Committee will be discussing ideas and encouraging community involvement for exciting upgrades to our Park. The committee is keen to hear from you with ideas to develop an exciting natural play space – pop along and let them know what you’d like to see. There will be more than 20 stalls including many focusing on being well, living well and looking after each other, and let’s face it, that’s what community is really all about. Entry is free. For more information call Fiona on 0419 538 920, or like the fair on Facebook: Facebook/DaylesfordCommunityFair.

Home is Where the Hall is…
MOST country communities within Australia have a community hall, a hub where people from the region can gather for many reasons. We have some real gems around here, and this year Saturday, November 21, is their big day. The peeps in Glenlyon are showcasing their awesome little hall with a double celebration; this year ‘Home is Where the Hall is’ coincides with National Restaurant Day, so Glenlyon Hall (Barkly St.) will be transformed into a mini ‘food hall’. A community lunch will be created by local cooks, showcasing the most delicious locally grown ingredients. Cost $15pp. (BYO). Afterwards you are invited to bring a jar of your fave homemade jam to share. Slather it on a fresh scone and sample your neighbours’ best efforts. The Glenlyon Hall ‘Food Hall’ will be open for lunch 12pm – 2pm. For more info about country halls go to homeiswherethehallis.com

YOU could fork out hundreds of dollars on tubes and tubs of chemicals to slather all over your face, or… you could learn how to make your own natural skincare products to nourish your precious skin. Saturday, November 21, Dora Berenyi is hosting a Natural Skin Care Products workshop at Trentham Neighbourhood Centre (Cnr High and Market Streets). Learn how to make moisturiser, luscious lip balms and gentle body scrubs from pure and natural household items with no added nasties. The workshop runs from 1pm – 3:30pm and costs just $35 (plus $10 for materials). All ingredients, jars and recipes are provided, just wear an apron so you don’t end up wearing your hand-made moisturiser on your clothes. Knowing how to make this stuff will be great for your skin, great for your hip pocket, and also makes great gifts… (hint hint!) Sunshine and Ciders! OH hello there late spring! Look at you with your sunshiny glow, your bare shoulders and sandals and your whiff of first sunscreen. We LOVE this time of year. We’re not yet summer, and we’re not yet end-of-year-insanity (although we must admit we feel it creeping on). We have MONTHS of happy days of sunshine ahead of us. This time of year calls for lazy afternoons with friends, it calls for shoes off strolls in the grass (the bindis haven’t hardened up yet, your soft winter-feet are safe) and it most definitely calls for a few ciders in the sun. Daylesford Cider Company knows where it’s at when it comes to summer bevies. Right now as we go to print, they are bottling up the latest ciders, and slapping brand new labels on the bottles. This year Clare and Jon are bottling the classic Farmhouse Dry Cider, their ‘Alf and ‘Alf (that’s a medium blend of half sweet, half dry cider) and the Sweet Coppin Cider. Coming soon are some new varieties including a couple of Sparkling varieties and in-house specials available on the keg at the bar. Daylesford Cider is at 155 Dairyflat Road, Musk, just a few minutes out of Daylesford, and is a brilliant destination for an afternoon of sunshine and cider with friends. Take a tour of the orchards (cost $20: bookings required) and learn about the apple varieties, the cider mill and the process. Take a guided tasting and discover how they hand craft their cider with love, skill and time-honoured tradition. Taste the ciders and stay for lunch. (Food is served weekends and holidays.) The menu is seasonal, and includes luscious salads, pulled pork rolls, and munchy and delish things made with local produce. Pizzas are a big fave at the cidery with the wood fired pizza oven all fired up and ready to go. – They go down so well with a craft cider and friends… (You know you want to!) Daylesford Cider Company is open Wednesday-Friday (12pm-4pm) and Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays 11:30-5pm. More info at Facebook/daylesfordcider. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

The Show Will Go On!
24
THE Daylesford Show is one of the highlights on Daylesford’s calendar, and is highlighted on many calendars throughout country Victoria. Daylesford Show has a long held reputation as being one of the best regional country shows in the land. Since humble beginnings in 1865 when it was held in the Jamieson Hotel Yard and known as ‘The Grain Show’, to the nowaday whizbangery of sideshows, rides and the perfect fruit cake crumb, The Daylesford Show is a brilliant family day out. The arena program is hotly contested, with horses and riders from around the state braided and brushed to perfection. The novelty vegetables and cake decorating entries are hilarious and amazing (respectively) and the rabbits are the fluffiest and cutest little things you’ll see. Cattle, goats, sheep, pigeons, dogs and poultry strut their stuff for judges, for rosettes and ribbons. It’s a day of pride, friendly competition and fun. Many schools and families throughout the region enter their best rhubarb, eggs and art work, with categories for just about anything you can imagine. For the full schedule and exhibition entry forms, go to daylesfordshow.com (your last day to enter is Sunday, November 20. = Loads of time to whip up a batch of six perfectly fluffy white scones!) The Show is always a fab social day out, you’re sure to run into everyone you know, carrying winners’ ribbons (from all those mighty vegetable victories) showbags, and dagwood dogs (well it is the show after all). This year the show will go on! (Despite the redevelopment of Victoria Park.) Some of the pavilions have been demolished to make way for the new footy rooms, but other arrangements have been made, and the show will go on, as big and bright and fun as ever! Gates open at 9am, the show rolls on until about 3pm. The Daylesford Show is an affordable fun day out for families: Adult admission is $10, Kids $5 (5-15 years), under 5s free. Family admission (2 Adults + 3 kids) is $25. More info at: daylesfordshow.com. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

Carriage Rides

THERE’S something about the clip-clopping of hooves to prick your ears and imagination. Hearing (and seeing) a horse in town is a romantic flash back to years gone by. It really wasn’t all that long ago when our grandmothers rode horses to school and locals would hop into the saddle to ride into town for supplies. Recently in Daylesford you might’ve noticed a horse and carriage taking people for an enjoyable ride through town. And if you haven’t seen them yet, you soon will. Pulled by a Pair Carriages operates from outside the Royal Hotel (Burke Sq) Daylesford, Friday through to Monday from midday each day. (Weather permitting.) Hollywood and The Duke are the lovely horses happy to take you on a carriage ride. You are welcome to meet the horses and their owners (Steve and Bronwyn) and climb aboard the old trolley for a ride. They depart on demand and take their riders on scenic tours of our pretty little town. Ride to Lake Daylesford, or take a tour to the top of Wombat Hill where you’ll ride around the scenic road under the magnificent trees of the Botanic Gardens. You are also welcome to use Daylesford Carriage Rides as a taxi around town. (Hello… best taxi ever!) These are 21st century horses and carry eftpos and are totally into selfies if you want to take a pic and share it with them on Facebook (Facebook.com/PulledByAPairCarriages). Pricing is family friendly and very affordable - $50 (for up to a family of five) for the lake ride, or $120 (for up to a family of five) for the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens ride. The horses love a celebration too, and would very much love you to enquire about kids’ parties, weddings or other events you’d like a horse and carriage ride at! For more info (and to pre-book) call Steve 0419 953 362, go to their Facebook page (details above), head down to Burke Square (near the Royal Hotel) or listen out for the clip clopping of hooves in Daylesford each Friday to Monday. Celebrating Fine Wine DAYLESFORD is in the Macedon Ranges Wine Region, and just seven minutes drive from Daylesford you’ll find Passing Clouds Winery (at 30 Roddas Lane, Musk) with their ‘must visit’ cellar door on every wine lover’s itinerary. Passing Clouds has history in Bendigo, and a natural evolution (and years of drought) prompted them to grow different grapes in cooler (and wetter) climes. The southern tree (vine?) change suited the winery and the wine produced by Graeme and Cameron Leith has a legion of adoring fans. Saturday, November 28, is this year’s Passing Clouds Wine Release date. Their wine release days are always a celebration, with people venturing from far and wide to try the latest vintages and new release wines. This year’s new releases include: the ’15 Bendigo Chardonnay, the ’14 Bendigo Shiraz, the ’14 Macedon Ranges Syrah, and the new N.V. Sparkling Chardonnay. Other wines available to taste and buy by the glass, bottle, or case (you know you want to) include the ‘12 Fools On The Hill Chardonnay, the ’14 Passing Clouds Pinot, the ’13 Fools On The Hill Pinot, the ’13 Graeme’s Blend and The Angel. Entry is free, tasting glasses are $10, and yours to keep (Or get a refund on your glass on your way out). This year the (new!) kitchen will be creating delish picnic packs. Share your picnic packs on the hill with friends and a few glasses of your faves from the cellar door. Sit up near the vines and listen to the Ugly Uncles playing live. The winery has just opened a kitchen and now offers a premium cellar door experience with delicious tasting plates loaded with cured meats, cheeses and charcuterie and local meats cooked over the hot coals of the charcoal oven. Sit over the water and admire what these self-professed ‘Fools on the Hill’ have achieved. (So good! Cheers boys!) The cellar door is open 7 days 10am-5pm. Food is on from 11-4pm. (The charcoal oven is fired up Friday-Monday. Tasting boards are served 7 days. Bookings required if you wish to eat inside on the wine release day.) Go to passingclouds.com.au or call 5348 5550. A Vegie Garden
to show off about
DON’T you wish you had an awesome vegie patch, the kind that you want to show off to the universe on Instagram? (oh, and nourish your family with?) It’s totally possible. With a little knowledge and a little love, sweat and compost you can grow a vegie patch that produces year around fresh produce regardless of your climate (looking at you Central Highlands, with your Arctic winters and Sahara summers). Julian Blackhirst at the Diggers Club at Garden of St Erth (189 Simmons Reef Road, Blackwood) knows his stuff and is hosting a Planning your Vegie Garden Workshop Sunday, November 29, 11am - 12:30pm. With a bit of planning and a few secret garden skills you can learn how to avoid gluts, and have a steady supply of food through successive planting and crop rotation. Cost $29 (Diggers members) $39 (nonmembers) Bookings are essential – phone: 5368 6514. For more info go to diggers.com.au

Blue Bean Love to all
30
NO you haven’t gone colour blind… Red Star has changed hands (and colours) and is now BLUE Bean Love Café! Yay! (115 Main Rd. Hepburn) Blue Bean Love is open 7 days a week. (8am-3pm Tues-Thurs / 8am-8pm Fri-Mon, with happy hour Fri-Sun 4pm-6pm.) The menu constantly evolves and includes all day brekky (‘til 3pm). It’s super fresh, locally sourced, tasty stuff. There are shared bits available for dinner, as well as more substantial dishes, with food served ‘til close. Music is a big focus for Blue Bean Love with local musos invited to BYO instrument and jam on Monday nights. Good fun! Musos are welcome to bring in their albums and merch to sell in store too. The aim is to have a muso of the month, and have that person come in for a live showcase at the end of the month. (Such a cool idea! Chat to Nico for more info.) Spread the Blue Bean Love! For more info go to Facebook/bluebeanlovecafe or call Nico 0419 529 956. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU
