Daylight Savings
our favourite kind of savings
SO, THAT was the longest winter everrrrr. (Yes, September, you’re included in that as well.) Jon Snow and those blokes on The Wall never did a DAYLESFORD winter. (Pfft. Soft.) But we did it peeps. We’re mid spring now. And something to really seal the spring deal, and lock away winter once and for all is the imminent return OF DAYLIGHT SAVINGS!! (HOORAAAY!!) Yes. Before you hit the hay on Saturday night, October 1, turn your clocks forward one hour, and HEY PRESTO when you wake up on Sunday the 2nd it’ll be virtually summer. It is truly remarkable what that extra hour of daylight does for our collective psyche here in the Central Highlands… sure our curtains are faded and our cows have lost their marbles, but that extra hour of sunshiny daylight is our reward for the months of bitter cold, fog and mud. Bring on the vitamin D folks. For more info on all things daylight savings search: timeanddate.com

ARKIE T. Williams knows how to dish out a tune. She’s an award winning singer/songwriter and lives right here in our ‘hood. If you’re lucky you might even spy Arkie around the traps - ukulele in hand, or out and about singing for us mere mortals who can’t hum a tune to save ourselves. Recently Arkie has released a new single – River, and she’ll be playing it (and others) for one and all, Sunday, October 2, at Horvat’s Supper Club (Shop 3/22 Howe Street, Daylesford) from 1pm. Arkie has supported Deborah Conway and Jen Cloher and her music is described as emotive, raw, and beautiful. Naww… (and it is!) Arkie T. Williams and The Mudlarks will deliver a magical Sunday session at Horvats from 1pm-4pm. Entry is free. More info on upcoming gigs and latest additions to the menu facebook.com/Horvats. CLIFF
a festival of film
WE love a good acronym. We especially love an acronym that forms an actual word. CLIFF is a mighty fine acronym you’ll hear bandied around these parts this month, as CLIFF is the Castlemaine Local and International Film Festival. (Nice one Castlemaine.) CLIFF will be held at the Theatre Royal, Castlemaine: Friday, October 7, until Sunday, October 9. This year’s programme includes classic and contemporary cinema from around the world, (twelve films in all) including The Picture of Dorian Gray (UK, 1945), Out of The Closets (Australia, 2016), The Hourglass Sanatorium (Poland, 1973), Gerald Mc Boing-Boing (written by Dr Seuss, USA 1950), and many other films of all genres. The diverse program also includes a screening of locally produced films for the CLIFF film competition. The full program - including the film schedule, dates, times, venue info, and tickets is on the CLIFF website: cliff.net.au

The next Traditional Wooden Longbow Making workshop will be held Saturday, October 8, – Sunday, October 9, at Little Hampton near Trentham. The workshop will teach participants how to craft and tiller their bows to precise measurements to fit their physique. You will learn how to make a bowstring, a cedar wood arrow, and how to sand and oil the bow. The following day participants are invited to a range to learn how to use their bows. This workshop offers more than just ‘making a bow’. Participants will ground with the Earth and reconnect with ancestral wisdoms. You have the option of coming into the workshop on both days or camping at the site overnight. Cost for this workshop is $295. OUR region is really spoilt for choice when it comes to schools. In Daylesford alone, we are lucky to have three primary schools and another just down the road in Hepburn Springs! Each year, the schools fundraise as best they can to raise money to support and enhance the kids’ learning and school experience. Daylesford Dharma School is the only Buddhist primary school in Australia. And being Buddhist, a sausage sizzle at Bunnings just ain’t going to happen. So the clever parents and teachers at Dharma School invented a comedy night fundraiser to raise a few dollars for the school, and it has become a major event on the local social calendar. This year Comedy 4 Karma will be held on Saturday, October 15, at Daylesford Town Hall. (76 Vincent Street.) This year’s line up of mighty fine funny people includes Tom Ballard, Luke McGregor, Geraldine Hickey, Randy, and the evening will be hosted by the extremely ace (and completely hilarious) Cal Wilson. Before the laughs happen lovely local Arkie T Williams and the Mudlarks will be playing some tunes and there’ll be bush poetry from Thomas J. Watson. Grab something amazing, delicious (and wholesome) from the Ice Cream Social Food Van. (Totally no sausages.) Take a peek at the students’ art exhibition and bid on the silent auction… So many amazing prizes have been donated by generous local businesses, bid up high and support this great little school. Daylesford Dharma School is growing, and plans are in place to build a whole new facility just down the road. Comedy 4 Karma is the school’s major fundraiser, and this years’ funds will go towards the new school project, so gather your friends and family and book tickets for Comedy 4 Karma quick smart! Tickets are $40pp (+booking fee) and can be purchased at dharmaschool.com.au or on the door on the night if not sold out. Doors open 6:30pm for an 8pm start. For more info call the school: 5348 3112 or go to dharmaschool.com.au

SPRING makes us all a bit mad. We all go a bit berserk in the sun, and all that pollen in the air and the sweet scent of blossom makes us all a little bonkers. You know what else goes bonkers in spring? Your garden. Oh yes. Right now watching grass grow is actually exciting, and mowing it is something of an Olympic endeavour. Gardeners everywhere rejoice in this time of year, flowers are doing their thing, bees are rolling around anything with a petal, and we’re prepping vegie beds as the earth warms beneath our feet. The passionate gardeners of Glenlyon are celebrating the season by opening their gardens to all for a little springtime inspo. The Gardens Of Glenlyon will be open Saturday, October 15, and Sunday, October 16. Gardens of Glenlyon is a seasonal event, previously the gardens have been open to the public in Autumn, Summer, and Winter, and now it’s Spring’s turn to show off to the world. There will be six gardens open to the public across the weekend, from 10am-4pm both days. Vizsla Lak, Throssell’s Mill, Wallaby Creek, Jenny’s Garden, Greenlion and Adsum Farm will all be open for you to wander through and admire. Discover formal home gardens, to rambling bush estates, and the clever and creative small market garden at Adsum. The hub for the weekend will be the Glenlyon Hall, here you can buy tickets to the gardens ($5 each) and browse the horticultural stalls – there’ll be plants, garden sculptures and other gardeny goodness for sale. Saturday night, (October 15) a special dinner will be held in the hall with guest speaker Richard Cornish (grower, writer, eater and garden guru). Tickets are $55 and available at trybooking.com/MBCE. Get your garden on this month, visit the garden gurus at Glenlyon. For more info (including a brief run-down on each of the gardens (and gardeners) go to: gardensofglenlyon.blogspot.com.au or call into the Glenlyon Hall across the weekend. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

great Aussie bird count!
10
WE all know one… We all have a friend who looks skyward at the slightest squawk, tweet, warble or trill. We all know someone who can spot the difference between a Long Billed Corella and a Little Corella at 20 paces, and we all know someone who nearly ran off the road when a Brolga flew over the car last week… (No? Ok, maybe that’s just us.) Excitingly for bird-lovers, twitchers and friends of the feathered, this month marks the Great Aussie Backyard Bird Count! This annual BirdLife Australia event requires just 20 minutes of your time to count as many birds as you can in your backyard, local park or favourite part of your corner of the world. The national results are collated and we get to be a part of this massive national scientific survey. Here in the Central Highlands we are soooo spoilt with oodles (scientific term) of incredible native birds, from hawks and eagles, to parrots and waterbirds, honeyeaters, kingfishers, finches, robins, wrens and a few random blow ins (like that Brolga… seriously. In a paddock near Newlyn. Last month. Amazing.) BirdLife Australia is the official Australian body hosting the Bird Count. They are Australia’s largest bird conservation organisation, and all ‘round good guys when it comes to monitoring, protecting and advocating the incredible wealth of species we have here in Australia. To be involved in the Aussie Bird Count you need to download the Aussie Bird Count app onto your phone. (search Aussie Bird Count.) The app will help you identify the birds you can see in your area, and you then log them through the app. The Aussie Bird Count will be held Monday, October 17, ‘til Sunday, October 23. You can submit as many bird counts as you like from different areas. (Yay!) Every bird counts! For more info about the event go to aussiebirdcount.org.au. For more info on the great work that BirdLife Australia does (and how you can be involved, come on bird nerds, you know you want to!) go to birdlife.org.au LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

It’s October!!!
lost the guide to where to find it
time for some Festa fun!
14
2016 seems to have tricked us into thinking it’s already October. What?? How is that even possible?! With October comes horse racing, and sunshine, and Cricket, and spray tans, and daylight savings, and Christmas decorations (ugh, actually, we spied them last month) and hats at school, and the end of footy, AND the much loved Swiss & Italian Festa in Hepburn Springs. The Swiss & Italian Festa is an annual celebration of the early Swiss and Italian folk who decided to call this region home in the 1850s and 60s. Many came from the Italian speaking Swiss canton of Ticino, and they recognised the wealth of the land, (and that incredible rich volcanic soil)… It wasn’t just the gold (and dirt) that excited them. They also fought hard to save the mineral springs from the frenzy of gold explorers, and for that we are so grateful. The gold might be long gone… (I said ‘might’ be…) but the precious mineral springs remain. Many throughout the region are named after these early pioneers. The Swiss & Italian Festa runs throughout Hepburn Springs and Daylesford - Wednesday, October 19, – Sunday, October 23. The Festa program includes a fantastic line up of events for families and visitors to the region. Enjoy traditional Italian songs, food and wine. Walk the region taking in important heritage sites, indulge in a little pre-dinner aperitivo, flex your Italian language skills with bilingual story-time and opportunities to parla Italiano. Play bocce, take part in the wonderful Grand Parade and Family Festa, learn a thing of two at an Italian cooking masterclass, kick back at Hepburn Springs Reserve for the spectacular fireworks finale and celebrate the region’s unique history. Pick up a Festa program around town or at the Daylesford Information Centre (98 Vincent Street) or for more info on the go - like Hepburn Springs Swiss Italian Festa on Facebook or go to swissitalianfesta.com.

A Wander Through some local history
BACK in the 1850-60s many Swiss Italians (mainly from the Italian speaking Swiss canton of Ticino) settled in the Hepburn Springs area. And today you can see the influence of these early settlers in the names of the springs, streets and families still living in the region. Friday, October 21, you’re invited to join the Swiss Italian Legacies Walk, a 2½ hour adventure, visiting places of Swiss Italian significance. This free walk will be attended by the Deputy Consul General from the office of the Consulate General of Switzerland in Sydney. A reasonable level of fitness is required. After walking up an appetite enjoy an (optional) $25 lunch at Rubens@Hepburn (book lunch by calling Rubens 5348 4283). To register your interest for the walk call Ian McKenzie (Daylesford Bushwalking Group) 5348 4283, Ian will then give you details. The walk is from 9am-12pm followed by lunch. IT’S hard to think that just last month Hepburn Springs Reserve was saturated under a torrent of flood water! Yet, just a few weeks later… (Sunday, October 23) we’ll be sitting in the same spot, necks craned skywards to witness one of the highlights on the Hepburn Springs events calendar – The Swiss & Italian Festa Finale – the Lantern Parade and Fireworks spectacular! Local schools have been creating beautiful lanterns especially for this event. At 7pm they’ll gather with families and friends (on the corner of Tenth Street and Main Road), and wander down through the bush to the Reserve to watch the fireworks illuminate the forest and sky. The Festa finale fireworks are always brilliant, with families young and old enjoying the spectacle. Join the parade of hundreds of lanterns, and remember to pack the thermos with hot chocolate and marshmallows to sip as the sky lights up above. More info at swissitalianfesta.com. THERE’S a Festival held (just about) every weekend of the year. Pretty much anyone with a paddock and some mates in a band can host a festival. In fact, right now, if you turn your ears, (and nose) to the northern breeze you can hear (and smell) a festival happening right now. (Pheeew!) As a true festival goer would know, not all festivals are created equal. And as the days lengthen and the sun gets warmer, our personal festival calendars are filling fast. This month we are promised a cracker, as the Kyneton Music Festival tunes up for a weekend of mighty fine music for young and old. This year’s Kyneton Music Festival will be held Friday, October 21, – Saturday, October 22. Sure that’s only two days, but BOY have they crammed some amazing stuff into the chokka-block two-day program!! Friday night the KMF is launched with Mikelangelo and Liz Stringer at the Historic Bluestone Theatre. And Saturday you’ll need to have your festival game-plan in order to tackle the amazing line up of bands. On the bill are: Henry Wagons & The Only Children, Mojo Juju, Dorsal Fins, Deep Street Soul, Jess Ribeiro, Raised by Eagles, Mike Noga, Skyscraper Stan and the Commission Flats (totally winner of best band name ever), The Tarantinos, Gabriella Cohen, Jim Lawrie, The Sugarcanes and other local acts included in ‘Golden Sounds’ (a selection of some fab artists from the Goldfields region). There’s also Kidfest (music and entertainment for the little festies) AND Music in the Churches. Exciting much?!! The Kyneton Music Festival main venue is at St. Paul’s Park on Piper Street, and intimate shows are right next door at Major Tom’s. Of course all the amazing local cafes will be serving up the deliciousness all weekend, but there’ll be ace food trucks rolling into town, and the Holgate Public Bar will keep everyone well beveraged. Tickets: Friday night shows are $20, Saturday passes are: Adult $70 / Youth 12-17 and Conc. $30 / Kids under 12 free. It’s All About Community in the country
LIFE in the country really is as great as you fantasise about from your Melbourne desk job. And even after you’ve lived in the country for a while, there are moments in country life that reaffirm your love for the place and why you choose to live here. Sunday, October 23, the teeny town of Glenlyon is hosting a community day. Everyone is invited to the Glenlyon Hall to welcome new residents to the area, and to visit the Fire Brigade prior to fire season. Walk the Biolink, discover community groups, hear about the Glenlyon Hall renovations and share some local knowledge. Bring something to share for lunch and at the end of the day help shift things across to the old fire shed and remove staples and hooks etc. from the walls in preparation for the renos. This is what community is all about and Glenlyon does it beautifully. For more info like Glenlyon 3461 on Facebook, or just rock up at the Hall from 10am.

YOU’VE seen the purple fields of Lavandula on TV, online, and in every dream you’ve ever had about moving to the country. Lavandula is a stunning property just out of Hepburn Springs at Shepherd’s Flat. The original stone farmhouse is an historic gem from the 1850s, originally built by early SwissItalian pioneers, the buildings have been lovingly restored, and the farm now boasts beautiful grounds and a productive vegetable and herb garden - supplying the café at Lavandula (‘La Trattoria’). The fields of lavender are harvested for Lavandula’s own body lotions and creams, room mists and essential oils. (Hellooo, so gorgeous!) A visit to Lavandula is high up the list on any visitor’s itinerary any day of the year, but this month there’s something extra special happening at Lavandula. Sunday, October 23, is La Primavera Festival as part of Hepburn Springs’ Swiss & Italian Festa. Celebrate the return of (proper) spring with a wonderful day of food, dancing and song. The Melbourne School of Tarantella (led by Rosa Voto) and their troupe of musicians and dancers will channel the energy and passion of Italy into the little farm for the day. The heritage of the farm will be celebrated in style with classic Italian fare served up from La Trattoria, (including pizzas from their wood fired pizza oven). Local stallholders will offer delicious regional produce and beautiful homemade craft items. Take a tour of the property and discover the story of the original Italian family who arrived in the area seeking a better life, and brought with them their amazing farming skills. La Primavera will be held 10:30am-4:30pm at Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm, 350 Hepburn-Newstead Road, Shepherd’s Flat. Entry: $6 adults, $2 school-aged children. For more info go to Lavandula.com.au
