the Kyneton Daffodil & Arts Festival

THEY’RE vibrant, they’re joyous, they flip the bird at winter and they pop up in their bazillions in Kyneton this time of year… Daffodils smacking you in the face with yellow at the moment and don’t you love it? In fact, Kyneton loves the beautiful bulb so much they hold an annual Daffodil and Arts Festival, now in its 39th year. This year’s festival, (Thursday, September 1 to Sunday, September, 11), showcases the daffodil and the local arts scene with an incredible variety of events over the eleven day festival. Obviously the daffodil is well featured throughout town with flower shows and beautiful open gardens, but don’t worry if flowers don’t float your boat, there is truly something for everyone at this festival - with markets and crafts, an antique fair, competition busking, the Alpaca Fiesta, One Act Plays, a fun run, the Old Time Daffodil Ball and a Variety Spectacular featuring many local and renowned artists and performers. But of course, nothing says ‘Daffodil Festival’ like ferret racing, so strap yourself in… There’s ferret racing too. On the last day of the festival there’s a Grand Parade with bands, dancers, floats, cars and vintage vehicles. The Festival concludes with a fair, performances and rides in Kynetons’ main streets. make it and they will come...

IN life there are two types of people. Those who can drive a sewing machine, and those who can’t. Those who can, congregate at places like the Daylesford Town Hall (Vinent Street) on a monthly basis to showcase their pretty little handmade things, and those who can’t drive a sewing machine congregate at places like the Daylesford Town Hall to PURCHASE said pretty little things. The Daylesford Makers’ Market is a mecca for contemporary crafty folk, and lovers of such handmade loveliness, and is on Saturday, September 3, 10am – 3pm. Being Lost & Getting Lost

lost the guide to where to find it

we know all about it

CELEBRATE women and mother earth this month with a visit to (the cleverly named): Can’t Think Straight shop and gallery (41 Vincent Street, Daylesford), for Rynelle Walker’s exhibition: Life is Art. Contemporary Aboriginal Artist Rynelle Walkers’ paintings adorn the walls and are quite the sensory experience. Rynelle’s art tells the story of life: the struggles, strengths and beauty of women, through use of intricate and colourful dot patterns. Rynelle is from the Kullili people of South West Queensland and started painting whilst travelling the Northen Territory, and although she only began painting 11 years ago, her work is found in public and private collections throughout Australia, and she even had one of her pieces featured on promotional material for NAIDOC. We were (for some reason) drawn to two of the pieces in particular: ‘Being Lost’ and ‘Getting Lost’. For a full run down of the regions’ galleries, turn to Gallery Guide on page 57. Woodend Children’s Park are we there yet?

WE AT lost are mad about playgrounds. Especially The Woodend Children’s Park, (13 Nicholson Street). This park is a school holiday destination in its own right. There’s a playground for littleuns, complete with ride-on ladybug, and an enormous space for bigger dudes - did someone say flying fox? You’d better believe it! The Children’s Park ticks all the boxes for families. It’s an exciting well planned space to climb/slide/spin/swing and run amok, (read: wear them out) with free BBQ areas, picnic tables, shade and great coffee nearby, (read: heaven). And if you’re also (like us), mad about a good bakery, Bourkie’s Bakehouse (115 High Street) is across the road, for pies, award winning vanilla slices and decent bribery fare to lure the kids off the swings and into the car at hometime. kd

Over 40 people gathered last month to plant a multitude of fruit and nut trees with the aim of providing free food to the Daylesford community. Get down to Earth at Clayspace

MOST Year 8 ceramic classes consist of bad pinch pots, slightly squashed coil pots, kiln explosions and the occasional all-in clay fight. (Or perhaps that is just our recollections of ceramics class?) Fortunately, some inspired individuals continue to develop their love for the malleable lump of earth and now produce beautiful works of art from clay. Even more fortunate are visitors to the region, because now you can purchase these precious works produced by the Daylesford Region Ceramics Co-operative at Clayspace (Leggatt Street, Lake Daylesford). Clayspace is a tiny gallery-shop, exhibiting and selling work produced by the Co-op. In addition to a fine food menu that offers a variety of intricate dishes, Kazuki’s also serves Japanese beers, and four carefully chosen sake, which can all be sampled with their very popular sake tasting plate. Pop the last Sunday of the month into your blackberry, iPhone, Androit or good ol’ fashioned paper wall calendar and put some time aside so you can kick back and enjoy a Japanese banquet, five shared courses a glass of wine and a pot of sake. Open Thursday to Tuesday for dinner and Friday to Monday for lunch For bookings and more info: 5348 1218. Next door to Kazuki’s at Shop 2 is Cecode Workroom, where you can indulge in an eclectic mix of the best in design, both old and new. Owners, Caz and Phillip Cordingley, both graphic designers, have selected a range of products; furniture, lighting, clothing and contemporary artworks from local craftsmen and printmakers, through to international brands and designers to showcase in this intimate gallery space. Open Friday to Monday from 11am till 4pm. More info: www.cecode.com.au Your next inspiration destination is next door again at Shop 1 is MADE Gallery, where you’ll be welcomed by the owner of the gallery, and of The Raglan, Jo Ruchel. An artist herself, Jo exhibits an ever-changing collection of local artworks, works on canvas, pottery and hand-woven baskets as well as other artists’ pieces from ‘near and far’. MADE is open Friday to Sunday from 11am till 5pm. For more information phone: 0437 687 942. Finally, the old girl is complete and has a new lease of life. Jodie Fergusson-Batte 38

about Pete Denahy

PETE Denahy is an interesting bloke, (and not in that, ‘shhh he’s a weirdo’ sort of way,). Pete lives in Yackandandah, he’s a balladeer and acclaimed writer; (winning the Golden Guitar for penning the Bush Ballad of the Year this year), he can plait stock whips, his mum is Japanese, he’s a funny bugger, and his song ‘Sort Of, Dunno, Nothin’ has had more than 650,000 hits on YouTube. Not bad for a bloke from Yackandandah. (Just wanted to write Yackandandah again, Yackandandah, Yackandandah). Pete Denahy brings his blend of comedy country music and bush balladeering to the Old Hepburn Hotel, (236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) Sunday, September 4, from 4pm. Entry is $10. More info: 5348 2207. Full a full run down of performances around these parts for the month of September, turn to page 52. kd 42

Simone Felice

(lucky to be) in Hepburn Springs SIMONE Felice doesn’t have your typical backstory. At 12 he survived a brain aneurysm, re-learnt all his basic motor skills, sharpened his mind writing poetry and performed in punk bands from age 15. Then with his brothers he whipped up two critically acclaimed albums, (as The Felice Brothers). Then there’s the whole, becoming an acclaimed author bit, the musical genius bit, and the little bit of (recent) open heart surgery, the bit about being commissioned to write a story for Bob Dylan’s 70th birthday, AND the bit about him popping over to Hepburn Springs to share his stories, words and songs with us. Intrigued? Awed? Fascinated? Just wait til you see him. Simone Felice plays The Palais, (111 Main Rd Hepburn Springs) Thursday, September, 15. More info: 5348 4849. Tix at: www.thepalais.com.au. ns

Hillbilly blues

THE Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, are a seriously long way from Wombat Hill. Archer Shepherd was born in the Appalachians and grew up inspired by the scratchy tones of country bluesmen Tex Morton, Lead Belly & Smilin’ Blinkhorn (yee har)! So when his family relocated to Australia, the blues followed him here. Archer found inspiration in the rich and moving songs of the Tiwi and Tongan islanders, and the musical results are a combination of hearty Hillbilly Blues, coloured by Archer’s gutsy voice that simply needs to be heard to be believed. Archer presents a mesmerising performance, as a talented singer, guitarist, and storyteller. Archer performs with the Long Gone Daddies on Saturday, September 24, at Horvat’s Wine Bar (Shop 6 Howe St, Daylesford) from 8.30pm. Entry is free.

A Little Bit Seedy

lost the guide to where to find it

on a Saturday morning GARDENING is supposed to be simple isn’t it? (Step 1: Put seeds in ground, Step 2: Seeds grow into amazing organic produce and you say bye bye to vegie shopping forever.) Clearly it is not that simple, because more often than not, the slugs devour the first shoots, or nothing happens at all. Either the slugs have surveillance, or lessons are required. The Diggers Club run monthly workshops at the Garden of St Erth (Simmons Reef Road, Blackwood). This month the Diggers demo how to plant seed, and how to get the little buggers to grow! They’ll tell you when and how to sow what, and lots of other handy tips and tricks. Saturday, September 11, 11am. Cost: $20 Diggers Members, $25 Non-Members. Shopasaurus at The Rex

lost the guide to where to find it

THERE are those who come to Daylesford for spa therapy, those who travel for spiritual therapy, those who make time for a bit of therapy for their relationship, and then there are those who make a bee-line to Daylesford for a spot of retail therapy. Daylesford is a teeny shopping mecca in Central Victoria, and home to clever boutique owners with such impeccable taste you wish you could buy one of everything. Scouring Daylesfords’ beautiful shops for something unique and completely gorgeous is a favourite pastime of many a local and visitor alike, and has been for decades. The perfectly restored Rex Arcade (51 Vincent Street, Daylesford) has seen a few tenants in its 82 years on the main street. Originally built as The Rex Theatre, most recently the rejuvenated Rex is home to several small retail shops, including fashion, antiques, exotic homewares, (including vibrant glass lanterns, eastern fabrics and décor), and the deliciously decadent Chocorex Café. So whilst trawling Vincent Street for that certain something (you’ll know what it is when you find it) take a detour at The Rex - Savour a delectable hot choc, and continue to obey your inner retail therapist. And that means… head upstairs to visit The Rex’s latest tenant. The Mill Market. The Mill Market has enormous premises at 105 Central Springs Road Daylesford… and a sample to whet your retro/collectable appetite has now opened upstairs at The Rex. Peruse the polyester and bakelite bargains, or unearth a treasure from Granny’s glory box. Naturally, at this point, a good retail therapist would then prescribe a decent foot rub… so best you head back downstairs for a traditional Chinese massage, (also now open at The Rex). The Rex Arcade is open weekends and most weekdays. Individual store hours vary, wander inside to see what treasure you’ll be taking home today. More info: www.therexarcade.com.au. Kathy Douglas 48
