30 years of crooked little thoughts JOE Camilleri has been making music for 45 years and with The Black Sorrows for almost 30 years. It’s a long time in one career… and a reaaaally long time in one band… But he’s not showing any signs of retirement just yet. THE stages in the pubs and halls around here have launched the careers of so many talented musos and performing artists of all genres… And it’s time for the next generation to step up and take the mic. The first EVER Youth Open Mic event at The Palais (111 Main Road Hepburn Springs) is happening Sunday, September 2, from 3pm till 8pm. This event is run by local kids, for local kids. All money raised will go towards local youth projects. Win-win-win all round. A LITTLE quiz to test your local knowledge: Which of these statements is true? 1. Hepburn Springs earned its name due to a local spring manufacturing plant, that made tiny springs for those annoying clicky pens?? 2. The region is nick-named ‘Spa Country’ after the famous country music act The Spa Sisters hailing from Daylesford?? 3. Mineral water is A) Delicious, B) Super good for you C) More precious than gold. Ding ding! If you answered number 3 you are correct! In case you weren’t aware, you are deep in Spa Country. The area surrounding Daylesford, (in a rough 30k radius) contains most of Australia’s mineral springs. The delicious drinkable stuff around here is perfectly pure, naturally effervescent and icy cold. They all taste different too, depending on what underground alchemy takes place… Some are a bit stinky, (some people dig it) some are sweet and zingy, some taste like the imported stuff served in schmancy restaurants. But if you BYO cup, you can drink it fresh from the source. For free. Legend says that during the goldrush, mining caused several springs to dry up… people power saw the mining stop and the beautiful bubbles spill to the surface once more! Hoorah! There are too many springs to list here, but try Hepburn Springs Reserve for starters, (with several springs in one place). If Hepburn’s distinctive flavour isn’t exactly your cup of tea, try Sailors Falls (on the Ballan Road, 5kms out of town) – it tastes a bit less, um, mineral-y, plus you get to see the spekky waterfall hidden from the road (you’d never know it was there). Or heading towards Trentham, turn left past Lyonville and head down into the forest to Lyonville Spring. Not only is it picturesque with tall timbers and the creek winding by, the water is delish. THERE’S crafty like a fox... and then there’s crafty like your girlfriend who screen-prints skirts and crochets mittens, has a shop on Etsy and blogs about knitting. Yeah, we’re talking about the latter. Threadneedle Craft (Shop 2, 52A Vincent Street, Daylesford – just near Coles) is hosting their annual Stitchery Retreat: Saturday September 8, and Sunday September 9, at Peppers Springs Retreat (124 Main Road, Hepburn Springs). On gallery goodness IN KYNETON’S great sea of golden daffodils this month, there are many gardens to wander, but let’s face it, just because the calendar says winter’s over - it doesn’t mean the sun’s out non-stop ‘til April. Nuh-uh. If you find yourself in Kyneton in September, and the great outdoors ain’t lookin’ so great, pay a visit to Stockroom (98 Piper Street). The store is stocked with treasures for your home and your wardrobe, with artworks of all styles, as well as vintage and bespoke furniture, reclaimed and repurposed pieces and new, just begging to be given a new home. Try on clothing by fab designers, drool over hand crafted accessories, (actually don’t, wipe your mouth please), then cruise the galleries and take in three new exhibitions. Stockroom launches their latest exhibitions on Saturday, September 8, 4:30 till 7pm. There are three artists exhibiting in September: Tai Snaith has written and illustrated a new children’s book The Family Hour in Australia. Her clever and quirky story depicts the daily lives of 15 Australian native animals and their families. It’s fun, informative, wonderfully inclusive (depicting all types of families) and damn these animals have style. Yes, that IS a green Featherston lounge in the Quoll loungeroom. Her original watercolour, pencil and gouache works for the book will be on display, and as an extra special treat Tai will be reading from the book (for both parents and kids) at 10am Sunday, September 9. Kim Barter’s Papier is a series of paintings and drawings expressing an inner landscape. Kim sketched her works on various camping trips here and there (deserts, beaches, mountains, you name it) and transformed these memories of literal landscapes into vibrant expressive works, richly textured and free spirited. Ahh what a bit of fresh air does to us! Stefan Gevers’ Secondhand Serenade explores how an abandoned and forgotten place can still summon a powerful memory. His works focus on overlooked details in the landscape, and the effect created by human intervention. The exhibitions will run until Sunday, October 7. Cold Chisels and Rolling Stones Rocking it in Creswick

SINCE pre-Neolithic times, us homo-sapien types have been into rocks. For millennia carving stone has been both a necessity and a hobby for those with opposable thumbs. Nowadays we don’t need to chisel a rock to fashion a knife with which to butter our bread, but there are still those among us who are passionate about creating objects of beauty from stone. David Barclay is one such modern human into stone carving. He insists that shaping stone is easier than you think, and offers a two day weekend workshop (Saturday and Sunday, September 8 and 9 at Creswick Railway Workshops, Lewers Street), where he’ll teach you how to carve a beautiful stone birdbath. THROUGHOUT the years the historic Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) has played host to everything from cake stalls to concerts, ballet to bush dancing, fancy-dressbook-balls to shiny-disco-balls, and on Sunday, September 9, at 2:30pm, the old hall is tuning up, and stepping into her finery for the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, as they present Bach and Bach. This concert contrasts Johann Sebastian’s ‘Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major, BWV 1048’ with ‘A Flute Concerto in D minor H425’ by his son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, (and features rising star flute soloist Taryn Richards on flute). Bloomers (Daffodils of course)... KYNETON is emblazoned in yellow this time of year – (well neon brights are very this season darling - and what could be more perfectly this-season than vibrant new daffodils)? For the past FORTY Springs, Kyneton has dazzled in daffodil yellow – and this September is no different – at their 40th annual Daffodil Festival. Each year the Festival concludes with a Street Fair and Grand Parade. Sun will guide the group in sacred chants and heartsongs. A joyful and easy way to achieve yogic peace, clearing the mind and activating the breath. Sun has held Sacred Singing Circles and workshops in Melbourne, Byron Bay, Thailand and Bali. He has a passion for music and a strong commitment to Yoga as a way of life. Sun also runs New Earth Catering, and creates wonderful nourishing dishes with fresh organic ingredients that all the lucky yogis will enjoy at the retreat. GUILDFORD. It’s a wee town with a big tree and an old pub. And once a year the pluckers and twangers of the land converge upon Guildford to, well… pluck and twang. The Guildford Banjo Jamboree is a celebration of the banjo in all its forms, with an emphasis on American string band music, bluegrass, old timey, jugband, Hawaiian and blues. As well as a bit of contemporary, Celtic and jazz in there too. The 9th annual event will be held Friday, September 21 - Sunday September 23. Holidays...in Castlemaine

THE CASTLEMAINE Children’s Literature Festival will be held next month, (October 1 – 7 at various locations in and around Castlemaine) – but with school holidays starting Saturday, September 22, the clever peeps at the festival committee have decided to run a pre-festival program, with a couple of days of fun with words for kids from four years of age. The Festival is a celebration of reading, writing and creativity for kids, young people and families. Pre-festival events include a zine workshop (we’ll be on the look out for pointers!) a poetry workshop, and an evening for adults who want to write for children. Tuesday, September 25, veteran Melbourne zine publisher, Luke Sinclair invites kids to make their own zine (a mini magazine) under his guidance. Luke is an artist who has published more than 500 issues of his current zine. (Sheesh)! He works at Sticky Institute (a Melbourne artistrun space) which is totally dedicated to zines. Luke will run the Get Sticky Zine Workshops for kids ages from 4 to 7 years: 10.30 till 11.30am, 8 to 12 years: 1.00 till 3pm and ages 12+ from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. Wombat style IT’S A JUNGLE out there… Well, not exactly… Around here it’s more like native bushland, (with less tigers, and more wombats). Daylesford is surrounded by forest, criss-crossed with walking tracks. Each Friday the Daylesford Bushwalking Group meets outside the Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre (13 Camp Street), and heads off to explore and hike through the wonderful bushland we have so close by. This friendly, active group invites all new participants to join in. Walks are generally three hours long, and vary in difficulty from easy to hard. If you’re feeling fit and ready for the challenge, pack a drink bottle and off you go! Remember to dress appropriately for the weather, (and being Spring, you’ll be layering your entire wardrobe, let’s face it). Patron Saint of skateboard and lattes AS A DJ, St Mel knows how to mix up a blend of stuff and make it work. So when she opened a store incorporating bikes and beats, wearable art and canvasses, shoes, great coffee and cheese-toasties, of course, the mix totally works. St Mel’s mix of mighty good things at her new digs is impressive. St Mel has her own band of followers from all over the place, and those in-the-know are passionate about all of the above stuff too, and travel from near and far to pay her a visit. The new store/café/gallery/workshop faces the (a-hem) *glorious* Daylesford Coles car park, (technically, the address is 5 Park Lane – which is notably the second best property in Monopoly, but in St Mel’s case, Mayfair (next door) happens to be Bakers Delight). Browse St Mel’s range of brand spankin’ new and brilliantly restored second-hand custom bikes. There are balance bikes for the wee tackers right through to serious road bikes for fans of lycra.
