lost the guide to where to find it

It’s Chopped Time

2

ONCE a year, the tumbleweeds are blown out of sleepy little Newstead Racecourse, as it’s transformed into another world; a world of hot rods, dirt drag racing, customs, bobbers, choppers, music, and cocktails as the Chopped Rod and Custom Festival rumbles into town. Friday, October 2, until Sunday, October 4, thousands of rockers, petrol heads, hipsters and greasers converge on quiet little Newstead with their hair slicked back and chrome buffed to mirror perfection to take in this massive weekend of classic motors and music. Chopped is like a 1950s/60s style Hop Up Carnival. It’s the only festival of its kind in the world, bringing back drag racing to where it began… in the dirt. Check out pre-1965 style hot rods, customs, bobbers and choppers dragging it out head to head in two lane dirt drag races. Then brush the dust off and head over to the Tiki Palace for a little island infused drinking. Set among palms and bamboo The Tiki Palace is a paradise of sweet cocktails to warm you up before heading out to see some awesome live music on the big stage. Friday and Saturday the tunes are cranking all day till way late, with bands like Jackson Firebird, CW Stoneking, Mammoth Mammoth, Fireballs, The Rechords, the Cherry Dolls and more playing loud stuff all day. Sunday there are bands on till 4pm, and more bands playing on the Wolfman’s OMB Truck. So many tunes, so many wheels, so many awesome people. It’ll be a brilliant weekend. Camping is permitted onsite, and the event will go ahead rain, hail or shine. There are loads of rules about which cars and bikes can be displayed and entered for racing, and all these details, as well as detailed camping info can be found on their website: chopped.com.au. Tickets (including day passes, festival passes and camping fees) can be bought through the website or at oztix.com.au or call 1300 762 545. (Adult day passes start at $40, or $45 at the gate). Keep up with the latest on Facebook facebook.com/Chopped. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

Daylight Saving

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!

4

LET’S be frank. Winter sucked massively this year. It was relentless. September, you weren’t much chop either. Sure you gave us a few daffodils and a bit of blossom as a pithy sign of hope for warmer days, but the ice and mist and fog and hail and need for polarfleece and gumboots did not go unnoticed. WE NOTICED! That’s why we are more than a little excited to welcome Daylight Saving back into our lives in the wee hours of Sunday, October 4. There’s something about turning that clock forward one hour that officially heralds the onset of warmer temps, bare arms and legs, G&Ts and PROPER Spring. (Sorry September… you were August-and-a-half this year.) Set your clock forward one hour before you go to bed on Saturday, October 3, and when you wake up on Sunday we guarantee it’ll be spring! (Um, but don’t pack the thermals away just yet… It has snowed here in November!) LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

Steam Trains for Kids

lost the guide to where to find it

and big kids at heart

6

WHEN you’re a little kid, big things are awesome. Elephants are just the best. Giraffes, brilliant. Industrial rubbish trucks that pick up skips, fantastic – and trains. Oh trains. Trains are beyond amazing. To a child a train is a wondrous beast. They are enormous, loud, fast and exciting. Waving at a train is one of the best things in life. There’s a significant chance that if you wave at a train someone will wave back at you, and a slim chance that the driver might even toot the horn for you. A personalised toot is right up there on the list of ultimate life goals of every four year old. Each school holidays Victorian Goldfields Railways runs a special Steam Train for Kids event. This much loved event promises much waving, tooting and big time train thrills for all! This month the Steam Trains For Kids will be held Saturday, October 3, and Sunday, October 4, at Maldon Station. Mini train fanatics (and those of us who never got over our love of trains) are invited to a big day out of traintastic fun. Maldon Train Station will be transformed to a kid wonderland, with trolley rides, games, novelty rides, donkey rides, clowns, a model railway a jumping castle and of course, steam train rides for all. The steam train rides depart Maldon Station at 10:30am, 12pm and 1:30pm for a one hour ride to Muckleford and back. Meet the engine driver, and you might even get to blow the whistle on one of the steam engines!! (Best. Day. Everrrrr.) Onboard, you’ll travel in one of the family friendly heritage compartment carriages, hang out the window, wave to kangaroos along the way (no guarantees they’ll wave back). For more information and bookings go to vrg.org.au. Book online before midnight the night before you travel and receive 10% off the ticket price. Cost: Adults (16+ years) $22.50. Kids (2-15 years) $13.50. Family tickets $67.50 (these prices inclusive of discount). Full price tickets will also be available from Maldon Station on the weekend. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

ARTOBER…

lost the guide to where to find it

just another month in a creative town

8

THIS region is a hotbed of creativity. There’s a painter, a sculptor, a printmaker, a photographer, a ceramicist, an illustrator, and a maker on every corner (lucky we have loads of corners!) Last year a committee was formed to promote the amazingly talented and diverse artists in the region. The result was Artober. Artober promotes arts events in the region throughout the month of October (and into November). Traditionally October is a huge month for the regions’ painters, as the Daylesford Art Show is held on the Melbourne Cup Long Weekend. This year the four-day weekend falls Friday, October 30, until Monday, November 2, with the Art Show Opening Night and private viewing to be held Thursday, October 29, from 6:30pm – 8pm. Tickets to this exclusive preview event are $25 (includes wine and canapés). This is your chance to take the very first look at this years’ works, and to put a red dot on one if you decide you simply can’t live without it! Last year there were over 200 works on display, in all manner of styles, so there’s bound to be something you love on the walls. The Daylesford Art Show has been running now for three decades. (Wow! – See? We’ve always been creative in this neck of the woods!) This year the prize money (for the categories: best pastel, watercolour, acrylic/oil painting and drawing) has doubled to $1000. And there is still time to enter. (Quick! Artists!! To your easels!!!) Entries close Friday, October 9. The Daylesford Art Show will be held at Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) and proceeds from the show are used to further promote the amazing artistic talent we have in the region. For more information on how to enter the 2015 Daylesford Art Show contact Jan Pengilley (5348 2000). USUALLY when you hop into a taxi the adventure is pretty limited… A fare from A to B might be peppered with small talk, bad music and weird smells, but that’s usually the extent of it. Not so for one little black taxi… Betsy the London Cab had a brilliant adventure. So much so that National Geographic made a film about her. A Fare To Remember: The Great Taxi Adventure is a joyous, light hearted tale of her journey from England to Australia. The film will be shown at the beautiful and historic property Duneira (1 Officer Lane, Mt Macedon) Saturday, October 10. Filmmaker Michael Dillon will present the film and you’ll even have the chance to meet the star of the show Betsy the London Cab. (She might even take you for a short ride!) Cost $15. Sing-along level: Expert

HANDS down, Katie Noonan has one of the finest voices in Australia. Her voice has a haunting clarity, it’s one of those voices that you don’t even bother trying to sing along with in the car because it is SO far out of your car sing-along capability. (Sure you can usually rock a bit of Sia, and give those high notes in Chandelier a good nudge - but Katie Noonan is simply in another league.) Katie Noonan’s Vanguard is touring the land to promote her latest album on the Transmutant tour. GARDEN sculpture has come a long way since the Jamie Durie water feature circa 1995. Anyone with a backyard and a bit of vision can appreciate a well placed work of art in an outdoor setting. Sculptors have known this for years, and when a group of sculptors display their works in a magnificent garden setting the result is magical and inspirational. The Mica Grange Open Garden and Sculpture Exhibition features fifteen sculptors exhibiting over 60 creations in the picturesque gardens of Mica Grange (373 Faraday-Sutton Grange Rd, Sutton Grange). The exhibition is open each weekend from Saturday, October 17, ‘til Sunday, November 22. The Mica Grange gardens in Spring are a sight to behold, the 40 hectare property has stunning views across the Sutton Grange Valley and is glorious this time of year. Entry is $5. Counting Crows

WE live in a semi-rural, semi-urban, semi-forested area. For loads of reasons the Central Highlands is the best of all worlds. Not only does this mean you can find great coffee on every corner, (very important and awesome) but it also means there are bazillions of completely amazing native birds in our backyards here. (Also very important and awesome). Monday, October 19, – Sunday, October 25, is National Bird Week. (Yes, this is a thing – and it’s exciting… stay with me here). This year you are invited to participate in Australia’s biggest citizen science project as part of National Bird Week. Thousands of people all over Australia will be taking part in the Great Aussie Backyard Bird Count. Yay! Go bird nerds!! You just need to find 20 minutes during National Bird Week to count as many birds as you can in your backyard, local park, or green patch. The findings from the national tallies are handed to BirdLife Australia (Australia’s national birding body) – and from these bird counts BirdLife Australia can determine how our feathered friends are fairing. You don’t need to be a crazy camouflage wearing, binocular toting twitcher to get involved, you just need to download the free app onto your phone or tablet and get outdoors and look up! And don’t worry if you don’t know a budgie from an emu, the app will help you identify any birds you’re unsure of. The app will also show you live stats on how many people are taking part near you and the number of birds and species counted across your neighbourhood and the whole of Australia. Our backyards are buzzing this time of year with finches and rosellas, honeyeaters and wrens, robins and wagtails, ducks and hawks, let’s show the rest of Australia how lucky we are here with the wonderfully abundant and diverse range of birds in our own backyard. Dig out your binoculars, dust off the bird book and download the app today! Wander through some local history

IN THE 1850s and 1860s many Swiss-Italians from the Ticino region settled in this area. The land was wild and rugged, but the abundance of natural spring water and rich volcanic soil made the land enticing and much of their influence can be found in the names of our springs, streets and even residents to this day! As part of the Swiss and Italian Festa you’re invited on a guided heritage walk Friday, October 23, 9am-12pm. Explore the landmarks and heritage of the region. (Moderate fitness required) After the walk you’re invited to Rubens@Hepburn (70 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) for a Festa Meal Deal $25 lunch inc. wine. Goats in the Highlands

BULLARTO is a teeny village on the edge of the Wombat Forest between Daylesford and Trentham. At 750m above sea level, the area receives regular dustings of snow in winter. Each Sunday the Spa Country railway travels to Bullarto station (from Daylesford Sunday Market) and the local kids are lucky enough to have their own primary school. Bullarto Primary has a vibrant community and a focus on environmental science with a small farming program. The kids even have their own flock of goats! Each year they show off their flock to the world at their annual Goat Festival. Sunday, October 25, the kids from Bullarto will teach you everything there is to know about goats. This is the school’s major fundraiser for the year. Enjoy lunch at the Happy Goat Café, jump like a goat on the jumping castle, watch cooking demos and help raise funds for this great little school. The Swiss & Italian Festa

Pizza, Pasta, Parades and Pinocchio

24

HEPBURN Springs is a tiny town steeped in tradition and history. In the 1800s, as the region was being excavated for gold, the early Swiss and Italian migrants saved many of the mineral springs from being obliterated, seeing the value in the liquid gold that flowed from these precious sources. Evidence of the regions’ first European settlers is still evident today, with many of the sixth and seventh generation descendents of these pioneers still living in the region. Their names live on in the people, the street names and mineral springs of the area. Dry stone farmhouse ruins pepper the landscape and a few of the original buildings from that time are still standing. Each year a vibrant festival is held to honour these courageous folk: The Swiss and Italian Festa! This year the Festa will be held Wednesday, October 21, until Sunday, October 25, and features a fantastic program of food, parades, music, walks, boccia, wine, art, circus performances, open gardens, fireworks, and the super-fun Swiss and Italian Grand Parade, followed by the Family Festa (on Saturday, October 24). The Grand Parade is a colourful parade for the whole region. Dress up and wander down Main Road Hepburn Springs (Meet at The Savoia Hotel at 10am). The parade meanders down to 9th Street, then wanders through the bush to the sound shell at the Mineral Springs Reserve. The Family Festa begins with performances by local school kids, and a huge day of food and fun at the reserve. The following evening (Sunday, October 25,) the Festa concludes with the much loved Lantern Parade. Meet at Tenth Street from 7pm near Cosy Corner CafÊ with your lanterns (hundreds of local kids have been hand-making theirs at school) and as dusk falls light your lanterns and wander through the forest to the reserve. Find a patch of grass and get comfy for the firework spectacular over the bush. It really is such a special evening. For the full program go to swissitalianfesta.com or grab a program throughout the region.

Lavandula’s La Primavera

The essence of the Swiss & Italian Festa

LAVANDULA is one of the most picturesque properties in the region. Lavandula was farmed by the original Swiss Italian migrants in the mid 1800s. In more recent years the ruins have been lovingly restored to their former glory, and Lavandula now celebrates the seasons with regular festivals and joyous gatherings. La Primavera honours the original migrants to the area, and welcomes spring and all its beauty in a vibrant day of food, music, dancing and history. La Primavera will be held Sunday, October 25, 10:30am-5pm. See Rosa Voto and performers from the Melbourne School of Tarantella, Gabriella Gomersall-Hubbard will share her knowledge of Italian culture and food, accordionist Nicolino di Sipio will ensure the day sounds just right. Sample Italian style wines, olive oils and olives, and feast on Festa faves from the wood fired oven at La Trattoria. Entry is $6 adults, $2 school aged kids. For more info go to Lavandula.com.au

Daylesford is a town that most certainly appreciates a fine cup of coffee, so how lucky we are that there’s a new café in town dedicated to the mighty bean. L1 is its name. (Look for the giant scrabble tile). L1 is the first born of favourite Daylesford haunt Larder. And it’s right next door to Larder at 57D Vincent St. L1 is a space dedicated to the worship of the bean, as their sign ‘Coffee is God’ attests. Sarah and Luke (owners of L1) have educated themselves in the fine art of coffee creation. They serve the finest roasted beans from Coffee Supreme, and can make it any way you like it, they even offer new takes on your fave brews with their awesome coffee apparatuses (seriously, it’s like a science lab in there! So awesome!) The bespoke fit out has been created with a bit of help from Jason Waterhouse (of Stockroom, Kyneton). The benchtops are reclaimed bowling alleys, the light fittings are hand poured cement. So it’s only fitting the coffee is hand crafted as well. Each week the coffee menu changes with two to four single origin coffees available to choose from. L1 sells loads of coffee toys for DIY coffee at home, with classic American Chemex equipment, V60s and filters for your own cold drip deliciousness (amazing as we head into warmer months) and they are happy to give you instructions on how to do it yourself. L1 shares a menu with Larder next door, and if you want a treat with your coffee, they make delish cakes and bikkies (including vegan options) on site. Beans are available to take away and can be ground any way you like. L1 is open 7:30am - 3:30pm Friday to Tuesday. Larder is open 8am-4pm, 7 days a week. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

The Secret Life of Artists

THIS wonderful region is home to hundreds of professional artists, all producing masterpieces from their studios in the towns, forest, hills and countryside surrounding us. Each year the Daylesford Macedon Ranges Open Studios event encourages these talented artists to throw open their studio doors and let the public in to meet them inside their inner sanctum. This year the Daylesford Macedon Ranges Open Studio event will happen across three creative and colossal weekends in November, the first being Saturday, October 31, - Sunday, November 1. One could be overwhelmed with the sheer number of studios to visit, (twenty-seven!) so a great place to start is the group exhibition at the Kyneton Hub, (St Paul’s Anglican Church Hall 26 Yaldwyn St.) for a preview of each artist’s work. (Gold coin donation.) Drive yourself to the studios, or take a bus tour ($8). Be inspired! Find out more at dmropenstudios.com.au

at The Old Hepburn Hotel

The celebration of Halloween is a bit contentious here in Australia. The ancient Celtic/pagan tradition doesn’t really fit with our seasons (boy whole pumpkins are expensive this time of year) but more and more we are embracing the opportunity to dress up like zombies, buy $50 pumpkins and ask strangers for lollies – and why not, it seems like fun. Saturday, October 31, The Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road, Hepburn) will host a Halloween Masked Ball from 9pm. Come dressed up in your Halloween best, (with a mask of course) and dance the night away with the other undead. Fire and Theft will be playing live with their fun mix of Gypsy dance tunes, a bit of surly swing, Latin, funk and disco, indeed a deadly mix of tunes for a night of wicked fun on All Hallows’ Eve. Presale tickets are $10, or $15 on the night. (It’ll cost you $20 if you’re unmasked.) For more info and bookings go to oldhepburnhotel.com.au or call 5348 2207. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU
