Spring Starts Here

lost the guide to where to find it

hoooraaaaaaay!

2

OH SPRING! Where have you been all our lives? After what was possibly the longest winter since Jon Snow and his buddies hung out at the wall - we are out the other side! Hooraaaaaaay!! There should be a tickertape parade and dancing in the streets. The arrival of buds, blossom, and daffodil blooms heralds the new season, and even though it is still highly likely we’ll see snow again before November it doesn’t matter because winter is officially O.V.E.R!! (Yay!! Happy dance!) Another way you can tell spring is here is once again the township of Kyneton is awash with yellow. The annual Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival is in full swing (Thursday, September 3, until Sunday, September 13). This festival gets bigger and bigger each year with so many amazing events across the ten days. Visitors are invited to the Art and Photo Prizes at the Mechanics Institute, the Festival of One Act Plays, the Spring Flower Show, the Antique and Vintage Fair, the glittering Daffodil Old Time Ball, open gardens, the animal farm, the (much loved… believe it…) ferret racing (yes indeed!), the food and wine fair at the iconic Degraves Mill, as well as performances, a scarecrow competition, buskers, literary events, the grand street parade, art, music, food, food, food and more beautiful blooms than you can poke an heirloom daffodil at. Many events across the festival are free or gold coin donation making the festival a great family friendly (and wallet friendly) event. The comprehensive festival program with all events, dates, times and entry fees is at kynetondaffodilarts. org.au. Spring starts here… at the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival. For more information visit the website (above) or call 5422 2282.

Treasures

from yesteryear

AUTHENTIC antique and vintage pieces are becoming more difficult to find. Gone are the days when you could just snap up a wing backed Featherston R160 from someone’s hard rubbish… (I’ve seen it happen kids). With eBay and auction sites, Facebook buy/swap/sell pages, high-end opshops, and good old Gumtree it can be really hard to be in the right place at the right time to find that perfect piece of antique or vintage awesomeness. One place you’re sure to find treasure from days of old is the Kyneton Antique and Vintage Fair (Friday, September 4 – Sunday, September 6). The fair is in its 19th year and is a gold mine of amazing original and restored antiques from yesteryear and more recent vintage pieces. The fair is on at the Kyneton Town Hall Friday 5pm-8pm, Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 10am-4pm. Entry is $7, children free. More info call 0428 878 048 or go to kynetondaffodilarts.org.au

(The overall winner will take home $250, second place $100 and the third place and encouragement awards receive $50.) Busking happens all day (10am until 3pm). Ferret Racing

the sport of kings

IT’S the race that stops the nation. It’s about the glamour, the glory, the power and the pace. It’s the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival Ferret Races. Oh yes. This is a thing. And it is a big deal. Sure, it has nothing to do with daffodils, or art, but the annual ferret races are awesome – and totally worth witnessing if you’ve n never had the… um... pleasure. The Victorian Ferret Association heavies will be there to compete with local ferrets for trophies, prizes and the glory of victory. Sure there’s no public holiday that goes along with this big race, and you don’t need to buy a $400 hat to fit in with the crowd, but they can guarantee lots of fun as the ferrets take to the track at the Kyneton Mechanics Reserve, (Mollison Street) Saturday, September 5, from 10:30am. Entry is free. For more information go to kynetondaffodilarts. org.au or call Eric Scoble 5422 6454.

WHO doesn’t love shiny things? The Malmsbury Fire Brigade totally love shiny things, so much so that they want a new shiny red fire truck. But they’re going to need a little help to make this happen. They have started a major fundraising drive to acquire the truck to help protect the growing region. Saturday, September 5, they are hosting The Malmsbury Classic Show and Shine – a super shiny day out for lovers of sensational cars and bikes. Expect chrome, gloss, metal, sparkle and shine, and loads of people descending on Malmsbury to take in the shiniest things on wheels! It’s all happening on Mollison Street, Malmsbury from 10am – 2pm. Entry is via gold coin donation (that goes towards the truck… sling them a fiver, that’d be even better!) Brooklands Free Range Farms

lost the guide to where to find it

Hap hap happy meat

8

HAVE you ever tasted the difference between bog-standard supermarket meat and free-range ethically produced meat? The difference really is striking. Brooklands Free Range Farm, grows happy piggies and cows on their property just down the road in Blampied. These animals are grass fed, and the property is chemicalfree and sustainably run. Owners Jono Hurst and Natalie Hardy-Hurst are passionate about producing delicious and ethical free range meat, and they have a particular passion for rare breeds, particularly British White cattle (they’re the cute white cows with black noses and ears) and awesome Berkshire rare breed piggies. These animals have a happy life – Jono has built little huts for the piggies to hang out in and the cows don’t scratch around the ears. This stress-free, farming with love approach makes for tastier meat. The animals are processed at an ethical abattoir in the western district of Victoria, and Brooklands sell their meat direct to the public at Farmers’ Markets in nearby Clunes, (held on the second Sunday of the month, this month September 13) at Jiggety Jig Market at Ballarat Showgrounds (held on the third Saturday of the month, this month September 19) and at Hank Marvin Market, Alma Park St Kilda (on the second Saturday of each month, this month September 12). Their list of heritage pork and beef cuts is huge, and excitingly they are now selling sausages (beef, boerewors and pork, apple and sage) AND small goods… did somebody say BACON? Oh yes. They do amazing ham, and nitrate-free bacon… AND they are taking orders now for Christmas hams. Numbers are extremely limited, and these babies will fly off the truck so get your order and deposit in ASAP (sorry to give you the hurry up about Christmas… but come on.. this month ends in ‘ber so you know Christmas is coming!) Brooklands Free Range meat is also available at Daylesford Healthfood and Organics. For more info like Brooklands Free Range Farms on Facebook or call 0422 748 670. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

NOW that it’s Spring it’s appropriate that you start mulching. Not so much your garden, but rather, you should really begin to Mulch your whole life. Now, before you go rolling around in pea straw, take a breath… and keep reading… Daylesford and Kyneton are lucky to be home to the super-awesome Mulch stores. Mulch stock some of the world’s most iconic designers: Marimekko, LeCreuset, Aesop, Uashmama, AND they can now announce that they are the exclusive stockists of the extremely delish Daylesford Provenders goods. They have been busy baking and sampling (the best bit) and have created some new Heirloom Orange Shortbread (the recipe has been handed down through generations of patisserie chefs) it’s very spesh. They have also created a new Italian Biscotti – which is cleverly made to enhance your coffee. Helloooo… So yum! These new little bikkies from heaven are sold in the classic Daylesford Provenders canisters and make perfect pressies. (Hint hint… Father’s Day is on the 6th) (Another hint hint… bikkies are a good idea 365 days of the year!) And speaking of gifty goodness (like that segue?) Mulch has some seriously fab pressie ideas for stylin’ dads. Marimekko socks (so amazing and very easy to find the pair when you’re folding the washing - That’s important. $29). And Aesop Shaving kits, (Moroccan Neroli Shaving Duet – smells divine and feels amazing on the skin: $80). Super cool wine carriers by Uashmama made in Tuscany Italy (So Dad looks rad when he’s BYOing: $39) Uashmama wallets $20 and Dad’s fave fancy Soda Press Co. ginger ale syrup $18 each or 2 for $30. It ain’t all about Dad this time of year, not when Mulch are receiving special deliveries of new Marimekko clothing EVERY FEW WEEKS in the lead up ‘til Christmas (Ahhh!) And the Kyneton store has very special Daffodil Festival windows designed by Aesop especially for Mulch this month! Too much awesome. JUST around the corner from wherever you are at this moment, there are scores of potters and ceramicists sitting at their benches and wheels, creating. In this region we have a high ratio of clay artists per capita. (We are quite sure that’d show up in a national census.) Some of the finest ceramicists in the country call this region home. So it makes perfect sense to run a major ceramic award at nearby Clunes. The biennial Clunes Ceramic Award is a big deal, with $10,000 going to the winner, (and the piece being acquired for permanent display by The Art Gallery of Ballarat) and $2000 awarded to the People’s Choice award winner. The prize will be judged by Korean Master potter Hyangjong Oh, and announced Saturday, September 19, at Union Bank Arts Centre (22 Fraser St, Clunes). KIDS love cooking. And given the chance they’re completely awesome at it. All they need to know is a few basics to start off with, and before you know it they’re whipping up crème brulee and tarte tatin for after school snacks. (Allowing your kid into the kitchen can have its benefits.) Thursday, September 24, Piper Street Food Company (89A Piper Street, Kyneton) is hosting a Kids’ Basics class in Baking for 8 – 15 year olds from 10am. This is a super fun class and a fantastic way for kids to learn some new skills in a creative and supportive environment, (and the mess stays out of your kitchen). IT’S nice to have friends. Great buddies who make you even more awesome just by hanging out together. Naww. You know what… The plants in your garden love their pals too. By planting mutually beneficial plants next to each other in your garden you can balance the ecosystem in your back yard and help your garden to thrive! Companion planting and crop rotation are super smart ways to get the best out of your flowering plants and vegie gardens. The Diggers Club at Garden of St Erth is hosting a companion planting and crop rotation workshop Sunday, September 27, at 11am12:30pm. Take a guided tour through their food forest, vegie gardens and orchards, and discover how they use these techniques at St Erth, and how you can do it at home. The Garden of St Erth is at 189 Simmons Reef Road Blackwood. Cost $39, diggers club members $29. Bookings essential. For more info and bookings call St Erth 5368 6514. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU
