Kim Potts, director of Kimble’s Music & Movement explains the importance of movement with music

Have you ever thought how dancing, stomping, wriggling, laughing, and playing instruments is good for brain development and how you can give your child a developmental head start. Well… From birth to age 3 a child’s brain grows at the fastest rate in his life. During this time rich, multi-sensory experiences build connections in the brain. The more connections a child has the faster they can think. Even though the school years are a long way off, the years from 0 to 4 are important because this is when a child builds the foundation skills to cope with school. Think of writing a story. What skills does a child need? He/she needs fine motor control, good posture, eye strength, imagination, language understanding, letter formation skills, and memory. He needs many connections in his brain to access all these

abilities at once. Plus he needs the left side of his brain, which tells him how to form letters and spell words, to work with the right side which gives him the ideas of what to write. All of these skills (and more) can be developed through quality educational music and movement. In a world where new generations of children are tending to move less and less, we as educators must find opportunities for them to move more. Musical activities delivered in a multi sensory way help a child discover their body; develop strength, coordination, balance and a perception of the space around them, all skills necessary for children to “drive their body” effectively.
