Gardening is Child’s Play... Hayley from Roots, Shoots & Welly Boots offers tips and advice about getting your little ones into gardening Growing something you can eat, digging for worms and getting dirty without getting into trouble? Does this sound like a dream to your child….

Being outdoors is so important for children. The fresh air is vital for health. Children will learn so much from nature’s playground. 5 steps to get your little one ready for gardening fun: Give them their own growing plot – one or two pots or a small area of your garden. Make a ‘My Garden’ sign and some plant labels to brighten up the area. Get brightly coloured children’s sized tools. Get them to water the plants & vegetables with a water spray bottle. Show them the whole process – growing

from seed may take longer but it does make the process more understandable for a child. Encourage them to eat their crop even if it is small. It may get them eating more vegetables! Find some suitable old clothes. You won’t be worried about the mess they make and your child will be able to explore at leisure. Give them a separate area to just ‘dig’ and play - children mostly just love to make their own fun by digging and getting dirty. This way you know that they won’t be digging up your plants and trampling on your flower beds. “Plant smiles, grow giggles, harvest love.”
