Lots for Tots Derby @LfTDerby

Welcome to Issue 48... Autumn is in the air and we are already planning for Christmas. Time is flying by, and, as promised, we’ve found you all the local festive fun to fill your diaries with! But before that we have Autumn, Half Term and Halloween - which seems to get bigger and better each year! See ‘Lots on Local’ for places where you can pick your perfect pumpkin! We have several new advertisers in this issue so please do check the ‘Lots on Weekly’ pages to find out what new classes are on near you! We’re also thrilled to tell you about Titchy Town in Chellaston; an indoor play village especially designed for children up to the age of 8. With 6 different play zones, children can freely explore and let their imaginations run wild. You can participate with them or can watch from their coffee shop - brilliant! See their advert on page 25 for more information and session times. If you’re struggling to know what to ask Santa for this Christmas why not ask for a Little Starts gift card? These are for parents-to-be, new parents, babies and young children to use at fun activities and classes to make precious memories at, instead of more clothes and toys that might be wasted - what a great idea! (see page 22). The next issue will be out in January when we will bring you as many ideas as possible for things to do in the winter months and Feb Half Term. Until then, Happy Halloween and Merry Christmas! Laura Trethowan, Editor, Lots for Tots Derby

Sand Art for your event, party, workshop or workplace!

Sand Art is a low mess, eco-friendly, craft activity for all ages; colouring pictures using brightly coloured sand to create amazing pictures. It’s as easy as 1,2,3: 1. Peel of a pre-cut, section of your picture (using little pick). 2. Choose which colour sand and sprinkle it onto the pre-glued picture. 3. Repeat! Until you’ve coloured in all the sections. The picture is then put it into a sleeve to protect it and so that it can be kept and displayed at home. SandArt picture workshops are entertaining and encourage creativity, imagination, concentration and also help to develop fine motor skills. The activity is fully inclusive and is suitable for children with disabilities and special needs to enjoy an activity alongside everyone else. Laura will travel to you to deliver a party or workshop to a minimum group of 8. Alternatively, nurseries or nursing homes can borrow the equipment and pay per picture.

Operation Christmas Child The Amazing Journey of a Simple Shoebox Gift Begins With You! A simple shoebox gift packed with love can have a huge impact! Operation Christmas Child brings Good News and great joy to children around the world.

Step3: A suggested donation of £5 is essential to cover project costs, including shipping, to enable a local church or group overseas to lead a safe, well-organised children’s event where your shoebox will be given to a child in need.

Each year thousands of people like you generously pack shoebox gifts to send to children in need around the world. Here is all you need to know about how to pack your shoebox gift:

Give online at ‘Follow Your Box’* and you can print out a barcode and place it inside your shoebox on top of the contents. This will enable you to know which country your shoebox gets sent to. *Follow your Box is only available when you pay online

Step 1: Find a Shoebox: Get an empty medium sized shoebox and wrap the box and lid separately in colourful wrapping paper or order preprinted shoeboxes online. Attach the appropriate boy/girl label, marking if your gift is for a boy or a girl. Select an age category 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14 and attach the label to the top of your shoebox. Step 2: Fill with gifts: Fill your shoebox with a selection of fun toys, hygiene items & school supplies. If possible, include one or two special items you know a child will love such as a doll, cuddly toy or deflated football with pump. Here are some Gift Suggestions: Toys that children will immediately embrace such as dolls or stuffed toys (with CE label), toy trucks, harmonica, yo-yo, skipping rope, ball, small puzzles etc. School Supplies: Pens, pencils & sharpeners, crayons or felt pens, stamps & ink pad sets, writing pads or notebooks & paper, solar calculators, colouring & picture books etc. Hygiene Items: Toothbrush, bars of wrapped soap, comb or hairbrush, flannel. (Due to more stringent import regulations, toothpaste and sweets can no longer be included in shoeboxes). Other Items: Hat, cap, gloves or scarf, sunglasses, hair accessories, jewellery set, wind up torch, slinky spring, matchbox cars.

Or you can enclose cash or cheque (to Samaritan’s Purse) and place it in an envelope inside your shoebox on top of the contents. If you are packing multiple shoeboxes you can write a cheque for one combined donation. Step 4: Personalise your shoebox by including a hand written note and a photograph of yourself, your group or your family. Step 5: Drop Off Your Shoebox: Place a rubber band around each closed shoebox and take it to a local drop-off location between 11th and 18th Nov. This year The Entertainer (Derby), Unit 149-150, Westfield Shopping Centre, Derby, DE1 2NQ will be collecting. Do Not Include: Used or damaged items; clothing other than as listed above; war related items such as toy guns, play soldiers or knives; chocolate, sweets or other food items; seeds; aerosols; toothpaste, lotions or liquids of any type including bubbles; medicines; hand-made or knitted stuffed toys; playing cards of the 4-suit variety; anything of a political, racial or religious nature; sharp objects; glass containers or fragile items; books with mainly words. Go online to www. www.samaritans-purse. org.uk for links to further resources & info.
