Lots of Mail... It’s great to get hear from you- if you have a recommendation you want to share, drop me a line! Dear Lots For Tots, As a Mum of two gorgeous girls I feel compelled to write to you regarding the excellent “Fun 4 Baby” and “Springtots” courses at Springwood Leisure Centre and Moorways Sports Centre. Whilst on maternity leave after the birth of my 2nd child, I looked for activities for my eldest, then just over 2 years. A few friends of mine with children of the same age attended the Beginners Springtots class (walking- 2.5 years old) at Springwood on Tuesdays so we decided to go along. My eldest was slow to crawl and walk so to see her develop in confidence whilst climbing the apparatus with me by her side was a delight. She learnt to jump, do forward rolls, walk on a balance beam and much more. Her confidence has grown so much that she has been asked to attend the Intermediates Springtots class (2.5-3 years). This interim class allows parents to come along whilst the children are coached by professional gymnastics coaches. This will pave the way for her independence and further confidence for when she attends the Advanced Springtots class (3-4 years) where parents don’t stay. Whilst at the Beginners class, the instructors made me aware of the “Fun 4 Baby” class, also at Springwood, for little ones who are between 12 weeks-walking. This has developed my little baby’s skills. She loves it as she interacts with me, the instructors and other babies. Getting used to the environment there will help when she also walks, progressing onto the next class. If anybody is looking for physical development for their children I wholeheartedly recommend these courses. Anna.

Calling all breast feeding mums....... I just wanted to let you all know (if you haven’t discovered it already) about the Bookcafe, in the Cornmarket, Derby. Breast feeding your little one is not always that discreet and I often ended up eating a sandwich in a parent room to save sitting in one of the many glass windowed cafe’s. No more.... I found the Bookcafe in the Cornmarket is fab, although there are a couple of stairs to get in, the friendly staff are only to pleased to oblige with your pram and once inside there is ample room to manoeuvre it! The cafe goes back a long way and has comfy seats at the back and the place just has a very comfortable feel about it. They do a lovely coffee and a loyalty card so your 10th one is free! I can’t recommend this place enough, try it for yourself and if you fancy a night out instead, I understand they are going to be doing wine and freshly baked pizza nights soon too! Mel & Sophie (6 months).

Our DCitC Competition WInner Parents tells us Please mention Lots for Tots when contacting an advertiser about Charles’ fantastic Day with Rammie Charles was excited from the moment he knew he’d won, he absolutely loves Rammie & Derby County Football Club. We had to show him on the calender exactly when his “Special Guest” experience was & we counted down every Saturday with him. Two months is a very long time for a 3 & a half yr old, but he totally understood & even to this day, it is a favourite topic of conversation with him! On the actual day, it was an amazing fantastic family day. We had Grandma, & Grandads, Mummy & Daddy. We both took the opportunity to go pitch side for his big run on the pitch, (in which I cried with pride). He was the youngest on the day & was a bit left behind as they ran out of the tunnel with Rammie- his little legs could not carry him as fast as the others! This didn’t bother him at all, he was in his element & just cut across the pitch. As he made his way to the East Stand he received an almighty cheer from both Rammie & the DCFC fans!! Here is Charles’ experience in his own words: “The day was good. I love Rammie. The pitch was cold. Rammie fell over which was funny & then he came out in a green kit wearing gloves” The whole experience was brilliant including the help of Carly before & after the event & Laura & Emily on the day. A special thank you to them & good luck to Carly for the future (she’ll know what we mean!). The prize has meant so much to Charles, we’ll treasure the photos & memories for ever! If Charles had his way, he’d be Rammies special guest for every home game!! Thank you Lots for Tots for running the competition, thank you Derby County in the Community & Rammie for the Special Guest & Trophy, A brilliant day had by all!!!! The Pennington Family xxx

publishers; Choral Lullabies – a bedtime gathering with singing and lullabies to send your little ones to sleep; Baby Yoga – teaching simple yoga techniques for both baby and parent ; and the Breastfeeding Boudoir - a relaxing place for mums to come and breast or bottle feed their babies, with comfy seats, magazines and other mums to chat to. Director and mother of four, Rowan Hoban offers her top survival tips for parents and babies attending the festival this year, “I’ll be making full use of our clean and convenient nappy changing facilities which are on hand for our festival families and I’d recommend bringing along a number of essentials, such as warm blankets, hats, suncream, waterproofs and the all-important baby wipes and handgel to make your festival experience as comfortable as possible for our little festivalgoers.”

To win a family day ticket to Just So Festival Just answer this question: What is the name of the designated area for 0-4 year olds? Email your answer to info@lotsfortots.co.uk or by post to Lots for Tots, PO Box 7769, Derby DE1 0SN. Closing Date Midnight on 5th August 2011.

Prize is non-transferable. Family ticket is for up to 2 adults & their children & includes participation in all festival activities. Winner name & location will be published in issue 16 of Lots for Tots. 1 entry accepted per household.

Lots of Gifts...

Graphic Designer & Mum, Holly Howson explains how her clever little baby inspired “Clever Little Baby”!

Well, it all started when I quit my job, sold my house, moved to Devon, gave birth to my beautiful little girl Emilia, renovated a new property and set up my own graphic design company. This was all in the space of a year and it was quite a lot to take on all at the same time. When Emilia reached 9 months, I heard lots of people saying babies can learn to read at a young age. So I searched the Internet and found footage of children reading from words scribbled on bits of paper. That’s when the metaphorical light bulb appeared above my head, I had an idea – I’ll make my own set of flash cards to test the theory with Millie. I started by using some of the words she was forming at the time. Her favorite was ‘star’, inspired by her Nanny’s fairy lights. I added a few more that I thought she might see on her trips to the countryside and created a rather crude set of 10 laminated cards. Before I knew it, she was picking up

30

www.lotsfortots.co.uk

the correct cards, making sounds and saying a few words. The theory was true! Then came Christmas. In my quest for a unique gift for my nephew, Charley. I decided to produce another set of cards. I realised there needed to be more cohesion to the set rather than the random words I’d used for Emilia’s. My starting point was Charley’s love of lion’s roarrrr! And so the first set of cards was born ‘Into the Wild’! The set went down a treat and my brother told how Charley used the cards everyday and could recognize the whole set, fantastic! Then the ideas came flooding in, and between caring for a lively baby, working as a graphic designer and having very little sleep, I began to draw the other 4 sets. After 2 years of development the ‘Clever Little Baby’ flash cards are ready to launch. I really hope that these cards inspire both children and parents, most of all I hope they make you smile.

Lots for You...

Your home, work, family & well being

The latest release of homes on the Wilsthorpe Meadows development in Long Eaton has proved to be as popular as ever with three homes being reserved in the first two weeks. Many of

the buyers comment on the fixtures and fittings, in particular they are overwhelmed by the quality and specification of the kitchens. The kitchens come as standard with 5 ring gas burner hob, stainless steel and glass chimney hood, and Bosch ovens. They have granite style Franke sinks, and come complete with integrated

fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. The high level of quality carries through to the sanitary ware and tiles. The master bedroom comes with fitted wardrobes by Hammonds. The price for a four bedroom detached property with all the above features start at just ÂŁ229,950. Westerman have ways of helping buyers move into one of these beautiful homes by offering an Assisted Move scheme, and a Part Exchange scheme can be considered subject to certain plots.

Thinking of counselling or psychotherapy? People find therapy helpful for a number of problems, including depression, anxiety, bereavement, relationship difficulties, abuse and trauma. Therapy can also be really helpful for managing the everyday stresses of life (let’s face it, being a parent isn’t easy!) I work with your own individual needs, so don’t worry if what you want to talk about isn’t mentioned here. I am an integrative therapist working from a Derby city centre location offering individual therapy to adults.

Self-care for parents Stressed out after the summer holidays? Want to understand your infant or child better? An informal workshop aiming to help reduce your stress levels. We will discuss some self-care strategies and some of the emotional needs of infants and young children. There is a small fee of £2 for adults. Under 5s are welcome. Why not come along? I hope to see you on Thursday 22nd September at 10am at The Mickleover Community Centre Contact me to book in or register your interest in future workshops.

Veterinary Surgeon Anna Cockle gives advice on choosing your first pet... Choosing a first pet can be both exciting and daunting at the same time. Many parents are under pressure of some kind from children to get a pet. The first thought must be – how responsible and committed are your children? Most small pets bought for young children will become the responsibility of you as a parent. Owning a pet can be rewarding, educational and a great life lesson in nurturing and responsibility. Look at the space and time you have available. Go to petting farms so your children can experience handling these pets safely. Some reputable pet shops will run pet care courses. The age at which a child is ready to take on a pet varies and only you can decide whether your child is ready. Rabbits are popular, but can be hard to handle and complex pets to look after. They will live up to 10 years – your child may leave home before the rabbit! Occasionally, without neutering they can be bad-tempered. As they prefer to live with a rabbit friend, neutering is ideal for a harmonious relationship! The best pairing is that of a neutered male with neutered female. Female rabbits should always be neutered for health reasons. Rabbits will need regular vaccinations.

38

Guinea pigs will live between 4-8 years www.lotsfortots.co.uk

and can make very good children’s pets. Two guinea pigs are better kept together than a guinea pig and a rabbit, where the rabbit can bully the smaller guinea pig. Smaller rodents should be taken on with care (mice, hamsters and rats) as they can be harmed when handled roughly and often come to harm when dropped by small hands. They also can bite! When making the decision, don’t rule out chickens! They can be kept in secure runs in the garden. Chickens will become amenable to gentle handling and the children will love collecting the eggs! There are many battery hen rescue schemes where chickens can be adopted. The pet will become your responsibility and therefore ensure you are prepared for the daily care, feeding and nursing should your pet become ill. Pets can be an excellent way for a child to learn empathy - many a Veterinary Surgeon / Veterinary Nurse started their path to a career in animal care with a pet guinea pig at the age of 7! Lots for Little Minds... Congratulations to St Edmund’s PreSchool Playgroup in Allestree who were recently awarded an OFSTED report of “Good” across the board! The staff, Committee & Manager, Donna Pullen are thrilled with the report which concludes that the playgroup provides “a safe & stimulating environment for children” & is “committed to ensuring every child feels safe & secure which provides a firm basis for children to make good progress in their learning & development.” The Pre-School has recently completed their garden project which includes a rubber bark area, soft surface play area, secure fencing & new outdoor toys. The garden has made

a huge difference to the children at the Pre-School who can now learn outdoors and in. St Edmund’s Pre-School is a not-for-profit organisation & as such, is very much a part of the Allestree community with it’s affordable rates, friendly & welcoming staff & dedicated Management Committee of parents. The Committee Chairperson commented “We are very proud of our Ofsted report & would like to thank Donna & the staff of St Edmund’s for all their hard work. My children have loved being at St Edmund’s & so have I !”

Lots for School...

If your little one starts School this September have a look at what we found to help them on their way

Starting school is an exciting time, but it can also be daunting. In her new series – The ABC Animals – author Emma Tofi pinpoints the concerns children may have about starting school and tackles each of these in a fun and reassuring way. The result is a charming A-Z collection of stories to delight readers of all ages. The series begins with Alana The Angry Alligator, who learns to make new friends. In the second book, we meet Bertie Bullfrog And The Bullies and discover how one frog bravely stands up for a friend. In the third story, Charlie The Cheating Cheetah learns that winning is less important than taking part.

48

www.lotsfortots.co.uk

With a decade of professional childcare experience under her belt, Emma is aware of the power of stories. “When a child sees that a character is going through the same kind of thing that they’re experiencing, it makes them feel more comfortable about opening up and talking things through” she says. “My hope is that parents and schools can use these books as an enjoyable story, whilst knowing they have the potential to be used as a platform for discussion, too.” The ABC Animals are published by Thingley Press (www.thingleypress.com).

New group brings Creative Little People together! What do milk bottle tops, sticky backed plastic, a knitted Scarecrow and great company have in common? They can all be found at Creative Little People sessions in South Derbyshire and East Staffordshire . Launched in January this year, Creative Little People, an art and crafts group, offers interactive creative play sessions for children and adults run by owner and founder, Sarah Bittner. Throughout the year, Sarah runs fully interactive, 45-minute sessions with a mix of games, music, stories, arts and crafts that are themed weekly for children from nine months to 11 years. Sarah explains, “We let grown ups and their little ones create together, laugh together, play together and then leave the mess to us!” Over the summer we will be running sessions for 9 months to 5 years as always, with extra sessions for 6 to 11 year olds during the school holidays. It’s £4 per session for each child with a maximum charge of £8 for 2 or more siblings (with the Loyalty Card and Gift Voucher you save yourself 10%). All sessions are pay-as-you-go with no advance booking required, so just turn up to a location that suits you best! For more information, call Sarah on 07784 613400 or visit www.creativelittlepeople.co.uk. To see what Creative Little People get up to view the Gallery page on their website or follow Creative Little People on Facebook.
