Go wild for free this summer with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust & Little Terra Derbyshire Wildlife Trust has teamed up with specialist children’s outdoor gear company, Little Terra, to organise a fun way of keeping youngsters busy this summer. The Wildlife Trust Little Terras Watching Week will run from Saturday 1 st to Sunday 9th August. Children will be encouraged to get out and about to explore their nearest Derbyshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve, or to take a look around the park or garden, to see what wildlife they can find. Little Terras Watching Packs will be available to provide hints and tips on identifying species. Carolyn Budding from Little Terra said: "“The Watching Week gives families with children of all ages something different to do in the summer holidays and beats the credit crunch because it costs nothing except some fun time outside.” The Little Terras Watching Packs will contain a tick list to be filled in and sent back to the Trust, and each of these will be entered into a prize draw. In addition there will be a drawing and photographic competition, with all prizes supplied by Little Terra. Little Terras Watching Packs will be available from The Little Terra shop in Sadler Gate, Derby, by contacting Derbyshire Wildlife Trust on 01773 881188 or visiting

Lots for Little Minds... Our Children are like sponges at this young age. It is now that we can nurture a love of learning and feed their inquisitive minds

Story Corner We all know a buttercup under your chin will show if you like butter – mine always shines bright yellow! But have you heard this tale of how buttercups came about? Long ago, a crock of gold lay hidden under a rainbow. Though many searched, it was found by one man. Greedy and selfish, he dug it up, his plan to keep it all for himself. That night, taking a bag, he crossed a field to secretly bury the gold. But in that field lived the fairies... They danced unseen in the moonlight, laughing. They saw the man and knew what he was about. They were not happy – they dislike any selfishness. So one fairy crept up. Unseen, he made a hole in the bag. One by one, gold coins fell out – all over the meadow. As the man turned, he found his bag empty - every coin gone! “Let’s put the gold on stalks, for everyone to enjoy!” said the fairies. The man searched, but to his disgust, he saw every coin was now a golden flower. Bouncing in the breeze, the flowers turned the meadow into a cloth of gold. People call them buttercups, but they are really fairy gold lost by a greedy old man! By Sophie Snell. Sophie is a professional storyteller based in Quarndon. Watch out for her family storywalks in Derby’s parks this summer holiday. For more information, her website is www.sophiesnell.co.uk or email robandsophie@hotmail.com.

Family days out in Derbyshire It’s a strange fact that when on holiday in a different area or country, we make a concerted effort to find and visit places of interest but rarely explore our local vicinity. We know these places exist but save them up for another day and then never seem to get there. Why not earmark a few ‘days out’ in the next few months to try some of these places out? For those of you that like the outdoors, consider Shipley Country Park near Heanor. You can walk or ride on over 18 miles of footpaths and bridleways through this 600 acre park, with large woodlands and tranquil lakes. They also have a number of other activities such as kite flying or angling throughout the season. Or explore the Shining Cliff Woods, located at Ambergate. There is free parking at the beginning of this woods and a number of marked trails, including one to the Betty Kenny tree where a family were once said to have lived. Other walks could include the Derwent Valley Heritage Way following the path of the river Derwent (www.nationalheritagecorridor.org.uk) or the Cromford Canal, which runs from Cromford to Langley Mill. A free leaflet which details the walk (and breaks the 13 mile journey into shorter sections) is available from local Tourist Information centres. Two other leaflets are also available which detail walks accessible for those with a pushchair, one is the Strutt Walk around Belper and Milford and the other around Riddings. If you like the idea of pedal power, then there are a number of safe traffic free trails in the area and many offer bike hire with all the extras you may need such as cycle trailers, child bike seats and cycle helmets. Carsington Water is a brilliant circular route but can get steep in places and there are a number of on-road parts. Carsington Water Visitor Centre also has a fantastic outdoor adventure playground and some gentle walks for toddlers with exciting things to discover along the way. The High Peak Trail runs for over 17 miles and begins just south of Cromford and there is a 13 mile Tissington Trail at Ashbourne. Free cycle hire leaflets are available from TI centres or email cyclehire@peakdistrict.org. Fancy a taste of the high life? Why not visit one of the stately homes in the area? Chatsworth, near Bakewell has a number of attractions, including the house, gardens, farmyard and adventure playground. They offer a number of family tickets but it’s

worth noting that the farmyard and adventure playground are free for children under the age of 3. The grounds are also free should you fancy a stroll, but take the wellies as it can be wet. For more information call 01246 582204 or visit www.chatsworth.org. Haddon Hall, a Medieval and Tudor manor house is also situated near to Bakewell and also has gardens as well as the house to see. Family tickets are also available (admission is free for children under 5), see www.haddonhall.co.uk or phone 01629 812855. Kedleston Hall, on the outskirts of Derby city is owned by the National Trust and has a number of events for younger visitors, from trails to craft activities. Phone 01332 842191 or visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk for more details. The Industrial Museum, the Art Gallery and Pickfords House in Derby are all free. For more information on opening times see www.visitderbyshire.co.uk. There is also the Strutt Mill in Belper and the adjoining River Gardens where there are free concerts with a variety of music on most Sunday afternoons from June to August. In Rowsley, near Matlock, the Toys of Yesteryear exhibition will excite your own children but also relive some memories for the adults too, phone 01629 732111 or visit www.toysofyesteryear.co.uk .

Top Tips for making the most of days out! Check out tourist information leaflets for discount vouchers and special offers. Attractions are often free for children under a certain age, so check carefully before you buy tickets and ask if there are any family tickets which include savings on regular admission prices. Consider also becoming a member of The National Trust or English Heritage, you may find that you make the savings in car park fees alone! Take a picnic or drinks and snacks to keep costs down. Children love eating out of doors and there will be no mess to clear up! Freeze cartons of drink to act as ice blocks, they will defrost by lunchtime. Don’t forget a rug and some wet wipes. Consider going by public transport, www.derbyshire.gov.uk has an interactive journey planner which gives detailed information and suggested routes for travelling by train and bus. For the children it can seem like an exciting adventure and the viewpoint can be very different from a train window or high up on a bus. For the adults, no worries about the driving or parking, and you might be able to sneak in a half-pint along the way! I hope these have given you some ideas; perhaps I’ll see you around! Dawn Dadswell Please note that whilst every care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of this information, the author cannot be held responsible for any errors or omissions which may have occurred. Before you travel it is advisable that you check with the attraction you are planning to visit their opening times and suitability for your family.

Fantastic future-friendly family fun for free.. What more could you ask for?! The bi-annual event is back at Markeaton Park this September. The aim of the weekend is to provide an entertaining and enjoyable two days for the whole family, whilst at the same time raising awareness of environmental issues. There are so many recyclable crafty things for little ones to do you will be hard pushed to fit them all in. I took my girls to the event in 2007 & my then 2 year old loved making dangling buzzy bees & rainmakers. There is fun for every age at the Ecofest with children's entertainment, Live music, inflatable fun, handmade crafts, workshops, whittling & weaving, a free cycle park to leave your bike, and much much more. Back by popular demand are Croissant Neuf, the Worlds only wind & solar powered human circus & The Green Roadshow with environmentally themed entertainment. Waste Not Want Not, Grow Your Own & Do One Thing for Wildlife will all have activities for children. You will even find a solar powered stage where local bands will be performing. The Storytelling CafĂŠ was a favourite with my children where you can drop in & out all day to eat your lunch or take a break & be whisked away by fantastical story telling. The Eco-Fest really is a fabulous day out as well as a great learning experiences for our future generations. I'll see you there! Derby Ecofest 2009 is on Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th September at Markeaton Park, Derby from 11am.
