Lots for Tots had a busy summer at Markeaton Park helping to raise money for Barnardos with the Big Toddle at Markeaton Park, with B Active. You can see the fantastic photos on page 6. It has been wonderful to see the fruits of our fundraising with the Isabella Peatfield Fund too. I hope you will enjoy reading about what has been achieved. Lots of News... Wow, have you got something to be proud of! Thanks to everyone who gave at the Bump to Five Show 2011, look what we’ve achieved...
D
own a dusty track called 100 Feet Road in Southern Sri Lanka, The Minimuthu Pre-School lies in the middle of nowhere roughly midway between Hambantota and Sooriyawewa. The Pre-School which has 30 children & 2 teachers was built by a local organisation called HADEF (Hambantota District Early Childhood Development Foundation) with funds from German donors. HADEF is run by a monk, Rev. Dhamminda. HADEF oversees about 40 pre-schools

across the district. This particular one, in Mayarapura, is a ‘model’ building intended to act as a template for other pre-schools & is actually very modern in comparison to the usual run-down buildings. Local people are subsistence farmers and labourers and are extremely poor which is why friends of The Isabella Peatfield Fund in Sri Lanka considered this particular Pre-School a good beneficiary for the funds raised at the Bump to Five Show. While we could have helped a far more run down Pre-School, miles from anywhere, there is no way of knowing whether such places will continue,

whereas thanks to HADEF, this one certainly will. Thanks to the joint efforts of The Isabella Peatfield Fund, Lots for Tots, the visitors of the Bump to Five Show & local Allestree Choir Sing for your Supper, we raised the necessary ÂŁ1000 to build the playground which consists of a slide, swings, climbing frame & round-about. As you can see from the smiles on their faces, the children of the Pre-School are absolutely loving it! A huge thank you to Kim & Tristan Peatfield, the supporters of The Isabella

It’s OK for young parents
QUAD’s Young Parents group publish their own parenting book
B
eing a parent is challenging enough without the extra difficulty of being a ‘young parent’. A Young Parents group from QUAD in Derby have created a book for young parents, by young parents, entitled to ‘It’s OK’. The book contains poems, artwork and advice, from pregnancy to parenting including tips for making simple toys. The book has been created by QUAD’s ‘Listen Love Learn’ group for young parents aged 25 and under. QUAD’s ‘Listen Love Learn’ group for Young Parents meets weekly in QUAD to give new and expectant parents an opportunity to meet others, learn skills, share experiences and work on creative projects. During the two years Listen Love Learn have been meeting in QUAD they have undertaken creative writing and textile projects, craft and artwork for exhibition which has evolved around emotions, memories, experiences, image, identity, relationships, development and play. Listen Love Learn’s creative activities enhance confidence, support social inclusion and promote health and well being. It also gives the participants time and space so that they can discover, enjoy and learn new skills at their own pace and to encourage them to become aware of their abilities. The group helps participants to gain confidence and make friends with other young parents experiencing similar issues so they can support each other. Michelle, a Listen Love Learn participant said “From going to these sessions I have gained friends, found people

who answer questions and understand how it feels to face the challenges of being a young parent.” Amy, a Listen Love Learn participant said “This book is so that people don’t feel like they’re failing” and Listen Love Learn participant Sam added “I would have felt a lot calmer if I’d had this book when I was pregnant”. The book is now on sale at QUAD for £4.00 and half of the proceeds will support activities for the group. The project has been delivered by QUAD working in partnership with NHS Derby City, as part of the ‘Arts 4 Health’ project and secured funding from the Arts Council East Midlands Grant for the Arts Fund, Big Lottery Reaching Communities Fund and Derby City and Neighbourhood Partnerships Be Inspiring Fund. Charity Shop for LIFE

ife charity in Derby is based on Green Lane, in Derby City Centre. We are a charity shop and also a care centre which is situated above the charity shop. The care centre provides all free services such as one to one counselling for mothers from qualified councillors. We also provide free equipment and baby items for parents in need. Other free services include free pregnancy testing and chlamydia testing. LIFE exists to save lives and transform the futures of some of the most disadvantaged children and young people in the UK by supporting vulnerable pregnant mothers and young families through difficult times, offering them the help they need to turn their lives around. The activities we undertake to realise this vision fall under four broad programmes: Housing - Residential centres providing supported accommodation and access to skills training for pregnant homeless young women aged between 16-25 yrs Care - A network of Care Centres offering non-directive counselling for anyone facing a crisis pregnancy, suffering the loss of a baby or coping with the after-effects of abortion. Also provision of free baby clothes, equipment or other practical support to families in difficulty Education - Education Officers working in partnership with schools to provide

young people with up-to-date, evidence-based information on abortion, stem cell research, sexual health and other related topics FertilityCare - The UK’s leading centre giving women a more natural alternative to traditional fertility treatment, which has just seen the successful birth of its 116th baby! LIFE has nine charity shops around the UK. From jewellery to jumpers and everything in between, our shops are a great place to snap up a bargain. Manchester, our newest shop, opened in July 2010, whilst our shop in Derby recently kitted out a bride for her big day! Every shop relies 100% on kind supporters to donate items to stock its shelves and on volunteers to staff, manage and coordinate day-to-day running. Many of our volunteers form lasting friendships with fellow volunteers who give up their time to help LIFE. Others find the work experience useful as a starting point for a career in retail, or simply something different to do with a few spare hours in the week. penwoodgate playgroup celebrated in style with a graduation ceremony for the children leaving playgroup this summer to start school in September. The children donned royal blue graduation caps and gowns for the ceremony and sand ‘one more step along the world I go’. The deputy Mayor of Belper, Mark Robertson, attended and presented the children with their ‘certification scrolls’ to the delight of the children and their parents/carers, grandparents and other family members.

After the ceremony, the playgroup held a party for the children, family and staff. BOOGIE WOOGIE BABES
A music class tailored for babies, toddlers & preschool, where we sing a mixture of traditional songs, Nursery Rhymes, counting songs & much more that you can sing together at home. Some of the action songs include dance routines & props. Of course there is always the bubbles- a firm favourite with everyone! Each class is virtually identical so with regular attendance the little ones learn the actions & words, before long they are able to join in with the group. It also means that if you miss a session, when you return we are still singing the same songs. All the children are together so the little ones look up to the older children, while the older children look after the little ones [this also helps Mums who have more than one child as they can be in the same class together]. We also do childrens’ birthday parties . There’s no need to pre-book & no joining fee. It’s pay as you go; under 1’s £1.50p over 1’s £3.50p & all siblings £1. Come along & join us we are sure you will have a fun time!
