I discovered my passion for landscaping due to its function to create new elements to benefit both ecology and society. Landscaping is not only a matter of improving the aesthetics of the existing environment but also solving different environmental problems.

LONG PING STATION YUEN LONG STATION
Land scarcity has been the culprit of the housing crisis in Hong Kong in the past 20 years. Hong Kong has been transformed into a small dense city with high-rise structures to accommodate over seven million people. The crammed structure of Hong Kong causes it to be one of the world’s most densely inhabited cities. As a result, difficulties such as sub-divided flats, rising property prices, traffic congestion, and fragmented public areas for people’s enjoyment arise. Long-time projects must be delivered on time to break the vicious cycle. Hong Kong has failed to meet the standard area of public open spaces. According to the 2017 Civic exchange study, each hong kong residents only have 2.7 square meters of urban public open space, which is just slightly larger than a toilet cubicle. In the meanwhile, Singapore, which only has the half size of Hong Kong, has 7.4 square meters of urban space per capita. Likewise, New York, a high population density area, has 10 square meters of public spaces per capita. Urban public spaces have s rising importance as cities abound the globe and hunt for secure and socially separated ways to exercise, socialize, work and play. The spaces are far more than aesthetics when these amenities are placed in the heart and spirit of a community. They are all about the sense of belonging, engagement, and connection.

FILLING THE BLANKS Special Project-Design | Yuen Long , Hong Kong Academic Project | The University of Sheffield | Spring 2022 The design language is inspired by the Yuen Long’s best assets - its aviary pagoda architectural, polygon structure and mangrove forest natural scenery. Curves, patterns, textures, shapes and forms of geological features are extracted and translated into the designs of paving, landscape furniture and walkway, making a statement about the natural beauty of Yuen Long. Riverside Walking Trail has been designed along the revitalised nullah/water channels and proposed watercourse, encourage residents to interact with the water. The distinctive character of Yuen Long will be formed by these four watercourses that penetrate the site. The movement and access had improved, such as soften the building edges to enhance the ground floor retails accessibility and visibility to accommodate diverse of users, allow residents to walk-straight-through and walk-straight-in. Also, introduce the curb extensions to reorganize the street, and to slower and softer the public life. Comprehensive pedestrian & cycling path to encourage walking and cycling, a complete pedestrian and cycling network connecting Hung Shui Kiu and Yuen Long New Town would be created inside the site, together with supporting facilities such as bike parking places, pedestrian crossing facilities and rest areas.

TO-GATHER Urban Design Project- Kelham Island | Microenvironments & Transitional Edges Academic Project | The university of Sheffield | Fall 2020 Our vision is to enhance the accessibility, functionality and socialised space for residents “to-gather”. We explored Kelham Island undergoing intensive regeneration and develop a design solution that demonstrates our concept for the transformation at various scales through physical models and illustrations. In this project, we re-designed the microenvironments and the transitional edges from the main street to the river bank in Kelham Island, Sheffield. We focused on the relationship between human experience and spatial organization in urban settings, we picked several types of potential users of the site and designed based on their perspectives and experience.

Combine the function of different spaces to build up an eco-friendly and self-support system within the site, such as using coffee ground mixtures from the outdoor cafe, as to support locally grown urban farming. Narrowing down the usage of the transportation or package helps to lower the footprint. in terms of spatial design, mainly uses trees and plantings to program various spaces. Keep the existing green space, increasing the tree cut down mown grass or lawn. as “a tree can absorb as much as 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year and can sequester 11 tons of carbon dioxide by the time it reaches 40 years old which can achieve low carbon environment.

Using the concept of imageability, placing different flooring along the street to guide the route to the Derby River Garden. The special pattern can become the characteristic of Derby culture. Along the route, more plantations such as trees and shrubs are proposed to add in as to function as a boundary between the sidewalk and the road, which can also provide a shading area along the route. As the destination of the journey is the Derby River Garden, the most special thing about this park is the water flow. So along the street, art sculpture in curve shape represents the wind and wave etc nature elements. These nature elements shaped art sculpture linked with the flooring pattern to create an imageability for the route. Having design for the ideal street based on the human sense and the plinth concept, creating more social space for the passerby to chat and taking a rest. Which also help to enhance the relationship of the local community. As the destination of the journey is the Derby River Garden, the most special thing about this park is the water flow.
