A WALKABLE CITY
Special Project- Design | Yuen Long , Hong Kong Academic Project | The university of Sheffeld | Spring 2022
Land scarcity has been the culprit of the housing crisis in Hong Kong in the past 20 years. Hong Kong has been transformed into a small dense city with high-rise structures to accommodate over seven million people. The crammed structure of Hong Kong causes it to be one of the world’s most densely inhabited cities. As a result, diffculties such as sub-divided fats, rising property prices, traffc congestion, and fragmented public areas for people’s enjoyment arise. Long-time projects must be delivered on time to break the vicious cycle.
Hong Kong has failed to meet the standard area of public open spaces. According to the 2017 Civic exchange study, each hong kong residents only have 2.7 square meters of urban public open space, which is just slightly larger than a toilet cubicle. In the meanwhile, Singapore, which only has the half size of Hong Kong, has 7.4 square meters of urban space per capita. Likewise, New York, a high population density area, has 10 square meters of public spaces per capita.
Urban public spaces have s rising importance as cities abound the globe and hunt for secure and socially separated ways to exercise, socialize, work and play. The spaces are far more than aesthetics when these amenities are placed in the heart and spirit of a community. They are all about the sense of belonging, engagement, and connection.

PEDESTRIAN ROUTE
Primary Route Secondary Route Shortcuts There are 10 schools in total and most of them are located on the right side, there will be lots of students accessing this area, and safety and convenience will be considered.
There are lots of illegal double street parking vehicles along the road which hinders the other drivers to access and turning out heavy traffc issues.
Single and repeat patterns are the main issues of the existing public spaces. It has the potential to link all the spaces together and create a consummate green corridor.

SITE FEATURE- AVIARY PAGODA (AP)
A convenient and clear pathway/access will guide residents to access the green spaces, which increase the resident’s usage of green spaces.
The most unique element is the architectural forms of traditional villages and the aviary pagoda. The existing nullah is located in the middle of the site which links the long ping and yuen long area together. F. Central One Way Street
