Land scarcity has been the culprit of the housing crisis in Hong Kong in the past 20 years. Hong Kong has been transformed into a small dense city with high-rise structures to accommodate over seven million people. The crammed structure of Hong Kong causes it to be one of the world’s most densely inhabited cities. As a result, difficulties such as sub-divided flats, rising property prices, traffic congestion, and fragmented public areas for people’s enjoyment arise. Long-time projects must be delivered on time to break the vicious cycle. Hong Kong has failed to meet the standard area of public open spaces. According to the 2017 Civic exchange study, each hong kong residents only have 2.7 square meters of urban public open space, which is just slightly larger than a toilet cubicle. In the meanwhile, Singapore, which only has the half size of Hong Kong, has 7.4 square meters of urban space per capita. Likewise, New York, a high population density area, has 10 square meters of public spaces per capita. Urban public spaces have s rising importance as cities abound the globe and hunt for secure and socially separated ways to exercise, socialize, work and play. The spaces are far more than aesthetics when these amenities are placed in the heart and spirit of a community. They are all about the sense of belonging, engagement, and connection.
