Texas A&M University Cain Garage College Station, Texas Situated northwest of the new Texas A&M University Hotel and Conference Center, this garage has a direct bridge connection to the hotel. Architectural expression is similar to form and materiality of other recently completed campus garages and complements surrounding campus buildings. The design team increased the garage’s capacity (and future revenue!) to 1,450 parking spaces from the originally programmed 1,400.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and your team for the fantastic job you did on the Cain Garage at Texas A&M University. It was a pleasure to be in partnership with you from project conception to completion. Your team not only met, but exceeded all our expectations. Since the garage opened, we’ve heard nothing but positive feedback from our customers, ranging from members of the Board of Regents to our students and faculty. It is a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility.

Texas State University Undergraduate Academic Center San Marcos, Texas
Growth of student enrollment led Texas State University to erect a building to support freshman academics and offer key student support services under one roof. The Undergraduate Academic Center is located near the south gateway to the academic center of the campus. Its prominent portal encourages pedestrian flow through the building to provide connections to campus destinations. The center is designed to house classroom spaces of varying sizes, departmental offices and tutoring and student assistance suites. A coffee shop near the entrance opens to Bobcat Trail, a landscaped, pedestrian zone on campus. HuittZollars was the Architect of Record and was designed by Ayers Saint Gross.
The firm worked closely with the University and System Office staff to navigate through a very difficult and changing cost environment to achieve a great building that will meet our needs. -Nancy Nussbaum, Associate Vice President Finance and Support Services Planning
Texas State University Undergraduate Academic Center | San Marcos, Texas
Texas State University Performing Arts Center San Marcos, Texas ‘State-of-the-art’ may be an understatement here. This impressive facility totals 43,700 SF (300-seat recital hall and 400seat proscenium theatre) with an 80’ fly tower and an orchestra pit. Well-equipped to meet the needs of the University’s vocal, instrumental, drama, and dance programs, it also houses an expansive scene shop, three well-equipped rehearsal rooms, dressing and classrooms, green room, VIP suite and three-story lobby. An adjacent 450-car garage with a 7,100 SF telecom department; a chilled water plant; and extensive streets and grounds improvements complete this LEED-NC certified commission.
Texas State University Performing Arts Center | San Marcos, Texas
My excitement for the Center is magnified by my appreciation for the outstanding design Huitt-Zollars rendered with great imagination and meticulous attention to detail. In fact, I recall vividly that it was your vision, imagination, and creativity in response to our needs during the interviews that impressed many of us and prompted Texas State to select Huitt-Zollars for this project. In the execution of the design for the Performing Arts Center, we have not been disappointed in that selection. Both the macro concept of the building and the detailed design work have been exemplary. The follow-through with your team has been, likewise, excellent from this very involved stakeholder’s point of view. -Thomas Clark, D.M.A. Director and Professor, School of Music / Texas State University San Marcos

Rice University South Central Plant Houston, Texas
The Rice University South Plant incorporates a highly functional design into architecture perfectly in tune with the greater university. Huitt-Zollars met the challenge, by designing and constructing a facility that functions better than the sum of its seemingly disparate parts and will serve Rice without requiring significant expansion for the next half-century. - Douglas Wells, DGCP Director, Facilities & Maintenance Services, Rice University Board of Directors, International District Energy Association
Rice University Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management Houston, Texas
Huitt-Zollars has been serving Rice for nearly 15 years on a variety of successful major projects including this amazing collaboration on the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management. Under the firm’s leadership of a highly complex team of designers and technical consultants, a close and effective relationship was fostered providing strong collaboration and momentum to the project resulting in a clearly documented savings of more than $6,000,000 on the project. Based on this long-standing relationship and our extraordinarily successful experience on the Jones School project I can, without reservation, recommend this team as a real “value-added” team member for any major project. -Barbara White Bryson , AIA, MBA Associate Vice President of Facilities Engineering & Planning

University of Texas School of Law Jesse H. Jones Hall and Law Library Renovation Austin, Texas Located at a prominent location on the university’s main campus, Huitt-Zollars accomplished this renovation/remodel whose full scope included the relocation and consolidation of faculty offices, a consolidation/restack of the law library, and reconfiguration/realignment of the support areas. To maximize daylight and reduce dependency on artificial fluorescent lighting, the exterior envelope of this 30-year-old building was modified to create strategic openings for daylight to enter. Phased construction allowed the facility to remain occupied during the renovation. The design team’s solution complements the existing design of Jones Hall while achieving the Dean’s strategic goals.
It is almost impossible to imagine that we could have accomplished so much so fast - and on the basis of a great design, of which we will be very proud - with any architectural team other than Huitt-Zollars. The firm turned in a remarkable performance from the start. It was bold, clear, practical and brilliant. And that is exactly how they have performed from the first minute out. - Lawrence G. Sager, Former Dean The University of Texas at Austin School of Law
University of Houston M.D. Anderson Library Renovation/Expansion Houston, Texas This complex and demanding project involved a 150,000 SF expansion and 120,000 SF renovation of the University of Houston’s main library, and 20,000 SF Honors College. With SBRA as design architect, Huitt-Zollars served as Executive Architect, providing project management and architectural services throughout the rigorous five-year project. The seamless meshing of existing and new space has created a new front door, bringing a heightened presence and visibility to the venerable space. Special care was given to providing an identity for the 20,000 SF Honors College, with high-finish areas to accommodate receptions and events.
University of Houston M.D. Anderson Renovation / Expansion | Houston, Texas
Huitt-Zollars functioned as a true partner to the University of Houston, quickly mobilizing and leading the project team to develop a conceptual design that helped the University to set priorities. I particularly appreciated their “no surprises” approach - they always provided us all the necessary information to aid us in making fact-based decisions which kept the project on schedule and on budget. The staff was also very flexible when decisions were made that didn’t fit the plan. They showed a firm grasp of technical details and a real commitment to achieving our goals. - Vergel L. CIRCULATION DIAGRAM
University of Houston Garage 1A Houston, Texas Completed as a Design/Build project, this parking garage on the University of Houston’s main campus is designed to serve the growing student residential corridor and provide additional parking for visitors, faculty and staff, as well as commuters. The controlled access precast parking structure for 1,500 vehicles encompasses 500,000 GSF with five levels above grade.
On the campus drive, which carries lower volumes of slower speed trafc than Wheeler and Calhoun, contrasting paving alters drivers to pedestrian activity in unsignlized crosswalks.
The new access road creates a new east-west pedestrian path. To minimize conicts with cars entering and existing the garage, lights and paving encourage pedestrians to use the north side.
The west side of the new garage is a major pedestrian spine linking campus to the intermodal center. It is a wide walkway marked with lighting, trees, and distinctive paving.
The east side path is not nearly as important as the west side since it leads to fewer destinations,. An ordinary sidewalk works here.
Sustainable design principals were utilized in the design of the garage.
The bus plaza mixes buses with high pedestrian volumes. Whether it’s expressly permitted or not, pedestrians will exit from either end of the bus platform; paving patterns can help guide them. Regardless, buses will move slowly.
A plaza at the intermodal center creates a gathering space and a gateway to campus.
SITE PLAN
The southeast corner of the site is not as important for pedestrians as the west side but it is a major gateway to campus for motorists.
