FROM THE
Community The Broomfielder™ is about community. Our business community, our schools community, our cultural community, our law enforcement community, our healthcare community, and more. Once again this month, we deliver a sampling of some of the great things that are happening in Broomfield that embody community, from the aforementioned organizations and more. One of the best examples of community throughout Broomfield is the Broomfield Community Foundation and its annual recognition of local citizens who stand above the crowd. On April 2, The Broomfield Community Foundation presented its 18th Annual Heart of Broomfield Awards, recognizing those who made significant contributions to the community of Broomfield in the prior year. Congratulations to this year’s winners and thank you for your service to your Broomfield neighbors!

ARTS+CULTURE APRIL 14
Join the ASTER Women’s Chamber Choir for their Spring concert, Songs of War and Peace, at 2:00 p.m. at the Broomfield Auditorium. The theme of ASTER Women’s Chamber Choir’s Spring concert is a timeless one which has inspired great poetry and music. Two local composers, Sara Flores and Alex Craig, will have pieces premiered. The Flores piece, Untapped Peace, features original words and music, and answers a child’s questions about war. The Craig cycle, War Songs Revisited, is a set of pieces setting poems by 12th century Chinese poet, Kao Ch’i, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Amy Lowell, Rudyard Kipling, and Alfred Lord Tennyson. Kim André Armesen’s, Even When He is Silent, is a poignant piece setting a text found written on a wall of a concentration camp after World War II. In addition, musical guests Anna Lynn-Palevsky and Declan Siefkas will perform an instrumental interlude composed by Artistic Director Christina Lynn-Craig’s father. This Idyl for Violin and Piano provides a transition from the War and Peace sections of the program. Another special offering is the Iraqi Peace Song which will be sung in a mixture of Arabic and English accompanied by cello and drum. The concert will conclude with a performance of Franz Schubert’s sublime Twenty-third Psalm, and Gwyneth Walker’s exuberant setting of E. E. Cummings poem, I Thank You God for Most This Amazing Day. Bill and Jane’s family had struggled since the accident. Their daughter was only 13 when it happened, but it was clear she would be disabled for the balance of her life. Now 23, she is dependant upon government assistance for her survival and medical care. Bill and Jane thought they did not need estate planning. Their friends said “just put everything in joint tenancy, because it is simple and avoids probate.” Thinking about their disabled daughter, they sought guidance from a counseling-oriented attorney who took time to learn more about them, their estate, and their goals. Their primary objective was to protect their daughter after they died. The attorney worked with them to put together a plan that places their savings, life insurance and home in a trust for their daughter, following their deaths. This prevents their daughter from being disqualified from the benefits she is receiving from government programs when she receives her inheritance. As a result, the inheritance can pay for things the government programs do not cover, providing additional comfort to their daughter. Estate planning can and should be more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can provide many additional advantages and protections for your family. Most of these protections are ignored in cookie-cutter, form driven estate plans. You should explore all of the benefits a properly designed estate plan can provide to you while you are alive, and provide to your spouse and your family after your death. If you would like to learn more about an effective estate planning process that is producing results for families, attend one of our complementary workshops.

This tour will be fans’ first opportunity to hear these songs live, and to share with Damian in the excitement and stories behind the album. Well-Woman Care At-a-Glance By Bhavani Chillara, MD
A woman’s life changes in rich and remarkable ways between 17 and 70. So do the health risks she faces. By knowing what screening tests you need when, you can lower your risks significantly. Here’s what I share with those I see for well-woman exams: • At every age, you are an original. Your physical, mental, and emotional well-being matters, as do your personal and family health histories. For example, if you have a close family member (think parent or sibling) who’s been diagnosed with colorectal, breast, or gynecological cancer, your first screening for that disease should take place a decade before the age they were at diagnosis. • The 20s are a great time to take charge of all aspects of your health—from regular dental care and vaccinations to diet, fitness, and safety in social situations. If you smoke, stop! This is also the point you’ll have a clinical breast exam and a Pap test, the screening that tests for cervical cancer. A check for STDs, including the HPV virus, is also advised, and you’ll want to talk with your GYN about your plans for children. • The 30s bring greater focus to one’s BMI, or body mass index – the measurement correlating your weight and height. You’ll be screened for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes during your wellness appointment. This is also the time to watch for changing moles or other signs of skin cancer and have your physician double-check any findings.

• The 40s are when regular mammograms are advised, along with your annual clinical breast exam. You’ll continue to have Pap and HPV tests at least every three to five years. If you’re still smoking, chest X-rays will be important. If colorectal cancer is part of your family history, a colonoscopy will be advised. • The 50s are when many women enter menopause, although the process may take place over several years. Because the risk of ovarian and uterine cancer grows during this decade, your doctor will want to know of unusual bleeding or abdominal discomfort. Changing metabolism will make it even more important to keep track of blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes risk, and weight. • Your 60s will see your continuing all the prior checks and adding a new one: for osteoporosis. Maintaining bone density is vital to living an active life and maintaining independence. Which brings us back to my first point: You are an original. You owe it to yourself to see a gynecologist who practices with that in mind and designs your care accordingly.

remembering
Broomfield’s First Police Chief and Capturing the History of a Growing Police Force By Dan Powers
A remarkable life of public service is being recognized this month by honoring Leonard G. Bishop, Broomfield’s first Police Chief.
H
e was known as “Chief” by anyone who knew him, and his strong style of leadership is a part of the foundation of Broomfield. Chief Bishop’s path in civic service began in the Navy. “His compassion to protect and serve began with enlistment in the Navy,” said his daughter Robin Bishop. He followed that path of civic responsibility as a policeman, and made history as the first Police Chief of Broomfield in 1961. “My father loved the town and the people. As a child of a policeman in a small town, I felt protected. The streets felt safe and everyone knew each other. He also loved Broomfield Days; a good memory is how we could lock him in fake cardboard jail,” she said. Because of his love for children he joined the El-Jebel Shriners and rose to leadership in that organization. He also served on Broomfield City Council. His granddaughter Mellissa Wood also described how he was always in the Broomfield Days parade, and loved that celebration of the community. She remembered how he was friends with Jack TerHar Sr., who donated the first patrol car to the police force. “He was this evanescent presence. Whenever he walked into a room, you just felt the magnitude of him. He was a no-holds-barred kind of guy, very protective of Broomfield. My grandfather was my hero.” He daughter notes that he was always working. If not at the police station, he was building something and was a superb carpenter. He built a two-car garage for his home and a cabin in

the mountains. “He was a man of many talents,” said Robin. “He was what you saw, true to his character. He was a rock for family and friends, or anyone that needed him. He touched so many.” Through the month of April, The Broomfield Depot Museum will have Leonard’s uniform on display, which he donated to the museum. Other police displays are being put together by the Broomfield Police Department and the department is looking for contributions and help identifying past officers in historic photos.
A celebration of Chief Bishop’s life will be held at the Broomfield Civic Center, 280 Spader Way, on April 28 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Telling the Story of Broomfield’s Police What would one day become the Broomfield Police Department started as a small organization formed in the 1950s to provide security in the construction and residential areas of what was then called Broomfield Heights. The newly-opened turnpike between Boulder and Denver led to new homes and an increased need for police services. The first officers were actually special deputies of the Boulder County Sheriff’s Department and were paid through the Sheriff’s Department and by contributions from residents. Leonard Bishop was one of a few deputies in the 1950s. In 1961, when the City of Broomfield was incorporated, Leonard Bishop was appointed the City’s first Chief of Police. The population was approximately 4,800.
50 Million Americans Suffer from the Ringing in the Ears Called
Tinnitus. In the years since Chief Bishop’s early leadership, the Broomfield Police Department has seen decades of growth and change. In 1969 Broomfield’s Police Department consisted of eight people and K-9 Officer “Prince.” At that time, the Police Department was located in the basement of the Empire Savings and Loan Building. In the 1970s and 1980s, the City of Broomfield expanded its borders annexing land in four counties: Adams, Boulder, Jefferson, and Weld. The Police Department expanded its staff significantly during this time, and moved to the east wing of the Municipal offices at #6 Garden Center. They added new services and programs such as a Communications Center, Neighborhood Watch, and D.A.R.E. In 2001, voters approved the new City and County of Broomfield which led to the creation of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team, and in 2003 the Traffic Unit was expanded to provide services for the increased vehicular traffic. The BPD has since grown to more than 200 employees, serving a population greater than 65,000. Despite decades of activity, there has never been a formal record of the Department’s history. Sergeant Rhett Newbold now is organizing the challenging effort to find and confirm the context to various photos, news reports, uniforms, equipment, and other historical items being generously donated to the Broomfield Police Department as word of the history project spreads to retirees and former staff. “Although there had been discussion for a few years, we finally got the go-ahead to make an organized effort at compiling and displaying some historical items,” said Rhett. The main hallway inside the police station is where the first phase of historical photos is displayed. “It’s been great to see people stopping as they walk down the hallway, pointing at images and recalling stories – or asking and learning more about the history of the Department.” Rhett said other areas of the station will have historical items as donations and research continues. “There are direct connections to the people who work here and the context of their efforts. Sometimes they chuckle at the style of the uniforms: ‘We wore polyester suits? Bow ties?’ We have a blend of old and new photos; in this way we are strengthening the connection to our story. People are having more conversations and building more pride in what we all do.” You can read more of Broomfield Police Department’s history at www.broomfield.org. For information about the history project, contact Sergeant Newbold at 303-438-6491.

Smart
Home Renovations By Elizabeth Buckingham
On A Budget
Spring is a time of new beginnings, and the warm air and soft light often inspire homeowners to tackle renovation projects they’ve been putting off. Whether you want to put your house on the market or you’re just looking to revamp your surroundings, this is the perfect season to do so. Many home renovation projects can be overwhelming and expensive, but it’s possible to make significant yet easy changes for a reasonable investment.
Reduce Clutter. The best – and cheapest – home renovation you can do this spring is to eliminate unnecessary items from your home. Are your kitchen counters cluttered with one-task appliances you never use? Pare down to the bare essentials, and tuck those essentials out of sight in a cupboard or basement. Closet stuffed to bursting? Keep the clothes and shoes you love and wear often; donate the rest. Go through every single room of your home, and identify items that could be repurposed, donated, or recycled. Removing excess clutter is one of the quickest and easiest ways to refresh your house.
Cabinet Upgrade. If you’re looking to refresh your kitchen but don’t have thousands of dollars for a full renovation, consider refinishing or repainting your existing cabinets. There are many budget-friendly options available, ranging from simple to elaborate; many even come in ready-made kits you can put together in a weekend.
Fresh Paint. Professional home decorators agree: a coat of fresh paint does wonders for any interior space. Just remember that successful painting is more about prep than actual painting, so take your time and prepare correctly. Clean all surfaces, remove hardware and light switch covers, tape carefully, and have all of the paint and other supplies you’ll need ready, so you don’t have to run the store midway through.
26
THE BROOMFIELDER™ APRIL 2018
New Hardware. Maybe you’ve decided that refinishing the cabinets is a bit more than you’re willing to take on. Instead, you can just upgrade your dated hardware, whether handles or knobs, to something new and fashionable. Thousands of options for every budget are available in both hardware stores and online.
Countertops in a Box. Some big-box home improvement stores have ready-made countertop kits; modern materials mean you can dramatically improve your kitchen without spending too much, and you can probably do the work yourself.
Refresh the Floor. If your floors are old and tired, consider a high-quality wood laminate. You can install it yourself quickly and easily with some basic tools and some DIY know-how. Alternatively, sand and refinish your existing wood floors. It’s a lot of work, but the end result is worth it.
Modular Carpet. Carpeting a space used to mean tearing up and replacing all of the existing carpet – a major expense and commitment. But new modular carpet panels, available in tons of colors and patterns, make it easy to add carpet in a small space, such as an entryway. You can even build your own custom area rug! Plus, carpet panels can be easily replaced when you tire of them or they get stained or damaged.
Add Some Color. Use throw pillows, cushions, window treatments or area rugs to brighten a space with quick, stylish pops of color. Accent pieces are inexpensive and easy to replace as the seasons and your color preferences change.
Brighten Your Bathroom. Bathrooms are typically small, so tiny budgets go a long way here. Ditch that grimy old plastic shower curtain, and invest in an elegant fabric design. Switch out towels and bath mats for plush new versions in coordinating bright colors. Add simple wall shelving, too, so your sinks aren’t cluttered with toiletries.
See the Light. Upgrade lamps, replace overhead fixtures, or add a mirror to a space – or all three. Lighting should be both decorative and functional, and good-quality bulbs and shades will make a room and its occupants look even better.
Whichever budget-friendly home improvement projects you choose this spring, remember to make your space your own. It’s perfectly fine to look at magazines or websites for inspiration, but ultimately you’re the one who has to live with it every single day, and your house should always be a place you’re happy to come home to. Plan Now for a Bountiful Garden This Summer
By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS
Though we had a very mild winter, many of us still welcome spring with open arms. Just as Colorado’s weather is tricky, so is gardening in our beautiful state. Colorado’s average elevation is above 6,800 feet which lends to frequent high intense sun and general low humidity.
T
hough the intense sun can present challenges, the amount of sunshine Colorado receives allows for growth of some of the best and most beautiful flowers. Colorado’s warm summer days followed by cool and crisp nights also provide great growing conditions for potatoes, cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, and other cool-season vegetables. The growing season is rather short in Colorado. The ideal time to plant varies widely depending on what types of vegetables you are growing. Spring is a great time to start planting trees, shrubs, and perennials and to start seeds and bulbs. It is generally advised to not plant anything outside that cannot withstand a freeze before Mother’s Day, as we can have frost up until early May. To get a jump start on your garden, you can start seeds indoors. When starting seeds indoors, the goal is to have robust seedlings by the time it's warm enough to plant outdoors. According to Jim Rohling, Jefferson County Master Gardener, “paying attention to your timing is key when starting seeds at home. Different vegetables require different start times.” Plan for a few losses when planting indoors as some seeds might not germinate. Most annual flowers and vegetables should be sown indoors about 6 weeks before the last frost. Make sure to use clean containers and label your containers so you know what you planted!
28
THE BROOMFIELDER™ APRIL 2018
What and When The Colorado Extension Master Gardener website has very in-depth growing season charts and climate summaries. • Hardy Vegetables include broccoli, onions, lettuce, peas, and spinach which can grow in temperatures as low as 40 degrees and can often survive a small frost. These can be planted as soon as the soil dries in the spring and as early as two to four weeks before the date of the average last spring frost.
Form and Function Once you are ready to take your plants outside, there are many options including container gardens, in-ground gardens, vertical gardens, and raised bed gardens. • Container Gardening includes everything from simply planting a flower in a pot, or window boxes to getting a bit more complex with tubs and half barrels filled with a variety of plants. Container gardens work well for urban areas or those with a small balcony or patio. Annuals, vegetables, and herbs do well in containers due to their small root system. If you are handy, you can even build your own container garden boxes using fence boards or recycled wood from pallets. There are numerous tutorials you can find online.
• Semi-Hardy Vegetables including beets, carrots, cauliflower, and potatoes can be planted as early as two weeks before the date of the average last frost but need temperatures of 40 to 50 degrees and do not withstand frosty nights as well as hardy vegetables. • Warm Season Vegetables need temperatures above 60 degrees and do not do well with frost. These vegetables include celery, corn, cucumbers, and summer squash which should be planted in early May to early June. • Eggplant, Pepper, Pumpkin, and Tomatoes, the very tender vegetables, are intolerant of both frost and cool spring winds. They thrive in temperatures above 60 degrees but really prefer temperatures of 70 degrees to 95 degrees. The soil should be dry and these should not be planted before early May.
• In-Ground Gardens are often part of a home’s backyard landscape. These gardens will need a bit more attention with regular watering and weeding. Each garden space is unique and you will need to know where you get sun and shade. • Vertical Gardening or Living Walls are ideal for those with no traditional garden space. These do not need weeding and usually grow on the side of a building, fence, gate, or balcony and there are even kits available to grow these inside your home. • Raised Bed Gardens, gardening on top of the existing soil in garden boxes, can be great for those who have a hard time bending or reaching. Another benefit of raised beds is having a more nourishing soil base for your plants’ roots. If you need help with your garden, you can contact a Colorado Master Gardener via the helpline at 303-464-5554. A volunteer will return your call and provide assistance by telephone or email. Broomfield residents may email horticultural questions to broomfieldmg@ext.colostate.edu. Use these great local resources to get your yard and garden looking beautiful! Good Samaritan Founding President’s Legacy Fund Provides Education Grants for Associates By Kristen Beckman
H
Dave Hamm retired from Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette last year, but he continues to make an impact on the organization through a legacy fund in his name.
30
THE BROOMFIELDER™ APRIL 2018
amm spent 39 years with the SLC Health organization, a nonprofit faith-based health system that owns Good Samaritan Medical Center. He served as GSMC’s first president and provided leadership in helping to design the facility beginning in 2002, during the planning and construction of the facility, and during its opening in December 2004. When Hamm retired last year, there was a great deal of interest among Hamm’s family, friends, and colleagues in honoring his contributions in some way. As a result, the Good Samaritan Medical Center Foundation created a legacy fund in his name. “There were so many people who wanted to honor him and his legacy in the hospital and just honor all the great things he’d done for our patients and our community and our staff, but they just didn’t know really where to direct that money,” said Jan Bonner, executive director of the Good Samaritan Medical Center Foundation. “We convinced him to let us open a fund, and we called it the Dave Hamm Legacy Fund, so folks who wanted to do something for him had a place to direct their contributions.” In May 2017, the foundation hosted its inaugural M*A*S*H Bash fundraising event and designated funds raised — more than $200,000 —for the legacy fund. A scholarship committee reviewed applications submitted by GSMC associates last fall and selected seven associates to receive scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $3,500, said Bonner. Hamm was on hand in February to congratulate the scholarship recipients at a celebration where they shared stories of inspiration, dedication, and hard work behind their drive to continue their education and careers. “He requested that money be used for associate education because he really believed in investing in the associates of our hospital,” said Bonner. “That says a lot for a hospital. It shows the associates that we want to invest in them and their education and their career, and it makes sure our patients have the best quality of care from the best trained staff. It’s a win for everybody.” The foundation will continue to accept donations to the fund on an ongoing basis, and additional scholarships will be awarded every year, Bonner said. The Dave Hamm Legacy fund is one of several funds the GSMC Foundation administers. The foundation was established when the hospital opened with the purpose of connecting donors in the community with the needs of the hospital. “There are a lot of very generous people in the community who want to have an impact
and so my job really is to connect those people with opportunities at the hospital to improve care or provide education or expand what we can do,” said Bonner. The foundation focuses on a variety of initiatives, including supporting different departments in the hospital through the purchase of new equipment or developing patient education campaigns; providing financial assistance for medical education for associates; and assisting patients with obtaining medications or medical equipment or helping family members find lodging while their loved one is hospitalized. The hospital and foundation board of directors set priorities each year and identify areas of need that the foundation can support. This year, the foundation is focusing on the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit, ensuring the unit has the funding for needed upgrades and equipment. “One thing that’s interesting about a hospital that is 13 years old is that all the equipment tends to start wearing out at the same time,” said Bonner. “We’re at that age where things are needing to be replaced.” Funds raised at this year’s M*A*S*H Bash will benefit the hospital’s NICU. The event is scheduled to be held in April at the Westin in Westminster. Jamie Farr, who played Maxwell Q. Klinger on the longrunning TV show, will be on hand for the event, Bonner said. “It will be a fun evening of celebrating Good Sam and raising money to support the tiniest patients in our hospital,” she said. The foundation’s other major fundraising event is its annual Good Sam Golf Tournament in September.

Depot Museum Friends’
2018 Speaker Series Kicks Off April 11 For the fifth consecutive year, the Broomfield Depot Museum Friends presents the “History Comes Alive!” speaker series with a diverse and dynamic line-up and the theme, “We are Broomfield.” The one-hour talks are scheduled on the second Wednesday of each month starting April 11, at 7:00 p.m. Most are at the historic Broomfield Crescent Grange Hall, at 7901 W. 120th Ave.
APRIL 11: The April 11 program is titled, “The Temple Down the Street: Finding Hope and Opportunity in Ashes.” Anyone who has noticed the Buddhist temple just south of Broomfield and east of Wadsworth has seen the heart of a tightly-knit, local Laotian community. In December of 2011, a devastating fire destroyed the temple and many of the artifacts that were brought from Laos by refugees escaping civil war and the Communist takeover in the late 1970s. In this presentation, the Laotian Diaspora will emerge and attendees will learn how this vibrant local community is rebuilding its temple, preserving its culture, and bringing its community together. Presenters are Emmy Thammasine, architect on the rebuilding project, and Sunnie Gist, the temple’s executive administrator and project manager for the build.

MAY 9:
JUNE 13:
On May 9, Rick Williams will present, “Sand Creek: The Aftermath, 1864–1876.” Williams, a Broomfield resident, will discuss the American Indian point of view after the Sand Creek Massacre. The Cheyenne tribe lived in Colorado and Williams will present what happened to them following Sand Creek when the Cheyenne declared war and organized other Indian nations to fight against the invaders. Williams, himself an Oglala Sioux and descendent of White Horse, a Dog Soldier, will base most of the presentation from personal family accounts.
On June 13, historian Bill Gwaltney will present, “Mixed Blood: The Love and Lineage of the First Families of the Santa Fe Trail,” examining Bent’s Fort and its role on the Santa Fe Trail. The family stories will include those of Charles Bent and Kit Carson who married the Jaramillo sisters, William Bent and Owl Woman, John Prowers and Amache, and the Samuel Magoffin family.
THE BROOMFIELDER™ APRIL 2018
SEPTEMBER 12:
JULY 11:
On Sept. 12 the series location moves to the Broomfield Auditorium at 3 Community Park Road for a presentation on, “Wild Women of the West” by the ever popular “Dr. Colorado,” Tom Noel. Noel is a Professor of History and the Director of Public History, Preservation and Colorado Studies at University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver). In his entertaining style, Noel will cover notable women in Colorado history and Broomfield Depot Museum Manager Jacqui Ainlay-Conley will chime in with stories of interesting Broomfield women.
Denver’s Lakeside Amusement Park will take center stage on July 11 when David Forsyth, Denver native and award winninghistorian, presents, “Adolph Zang’s Lakeside Amusement Park: From the White City Beautiful to a Century of Fun.” Zang, who has deep ties to Broomfield, had a role in building the amusement park. Forsyth will present Zang’s little known fun side and the prohibition shenanigans that took place in the park’s early years.
AUGUST 8: On August 8, Broomfield resident Tom Martinez will present, “We Followed the Coal and Migrant Work for a Better Life: Reflecting on One Family’s Journey.” In his presentation, Martinez will discuss his mother’s family history. His maternal grandmother was born in Mora County, New Mexico, and he can trace her family back to the 1740s. His maternal grandfather was a coal miner and brought his family along as he followed work in coal to the northern fields in the Boulder County area.
OCTOBER 10: The series wraps up on October 10 with its return to the Grange and a presentation on, “The Untold Story of the Peruvian Japanese during World War II” which will outline hidden history in the Japan-Peru-Broomfield connection. Speakers are Gil Asakawa, journalist and author of Being Japanese American, and Broomfield resident and City and County Manager Charles Ozaki. Although many know about the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, few have heard about the experience of Japanese Latin Americans. Almost 2,000 people of Japanese descent who had immigrated to Peru were rounded up and deported to the U.S. to internment camps. Broomfield City and County Manager Charles Ozaki’s family was part of this forced incarceration.
There is no admission charge for the presentations, but donations are welcomed. For further information about the museum, call 303-460-6824 or visit the museum’s website at www.broomfielddepotmuseum.org. The Museum is open on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and is located at 2201 West 10th Avenue in Broomfield. Questers Broomfield
Antique Club
Celebrates 50 Years By Sara Lynn Baker, MS
D
id you know that Broomfield is home to its very own local chapter of Questers? Questers is a non-profit, international organization that encourages an appreciation for antiques, collectibles, and the preservation and restoration of historical landmarks. According to the national Questers website, “Questers are curious, enthusiastic, and imaginative with a desire to learn new things. Someone who is excited by historical sites, antiques, and the study of past events that still resonate in our present lives and experiences.” The group’s motto is “It’s fun to search and a joy to find.” Questers has a rich history that started in 1944. When numerous co-workers of Elizabeth Bess Bardens continued to ask her about an antique pitcher she had lying on her desk, she launched a lunch discussion group. From this group, other groups or chapters were formed to provide a small venue for learning about one’s collection and those of fellow members. Chapters are currently in 41 states and 2 provinces. The headquarters is located in Philadelphia. The goal of Questers is to see that the best of American heritage is preserved for future generations. They do this in numerous ways including education by research, the study of antiques, and with the donation of funds to the preservation and restoration of artifacts, existing memorials, historic buildings, landmarks, and educational purposes. Questers also sponsor graduate-level scholarships at Columbia University as well as a fellowship at Winterthur/University of Delaware. According to the website, when eight or more people gather to discuss the topics of antiques, history, and preservation, and to share their collections and personal knowledge with many others, a chapter is ready to form. Each chapter selects projects to work on. Broomfield’s chapter is called the Chimney Sweeps. Chimney Sweeps Questers have been instrumental in supporting the Depot Museum

DOING SOME LANDSCAPI NG IN THE YARD THIS SUMMER? The City and County of Broomfield Stormwater Management Program would like to remind you that when conducting your landscaping projects, have your landscape material delivered in your driveway or find a staging area on your property. One of the leading causes of water pollution is landscaping material (rocks, compost, dirt, etc.) that is deposited in the curb and gutter. This kind of material can get washed away in stormwater runoff. The City and County of Broomfield works hard to maintain its storm sewer system and drainage ways. Storm sewers discharge directly into creeks, streams and ponds untreated. It is illegal and a violation of the Broomfield Municipal Code to dispose of or allow materials other than stormwater to discharge into the storm sewer system. Thank you for assisting the City and County of Broomfield in its efforts to keep our water clean. For more information, contact the Stormwater Management Program at 303.464.5648 or go to www.broomfield.org/wastewater
