spent a recent evening with a group of longtime friends who all happen to be dog lovers. We talked about our newer pets, our older pets, the neighbor’s pets, and former pets. As we reflected on more than two decades of knowing each other, the years were marked as definitively by which dog we had at the time as they were by homes, marriages, and children. Pets are family. One friend shared her recent wonderful experience adopting a new family member through the National Mill Dog Rescue in Colorado Springs. The organization rescues, rehabilitates, and re-homes discarded breeding dogs and educates the general public about the cruel realities of the commercial dog breeding industry. National Mill Dog Rescue started when Theresa Strader received an email that read, “50 Italian greyhounds in need.” A large-scale puppy mill was going out of business, and 561 dogs were going to auction. One of those dogs was a 7-year-old named Lily. The moment their eyes met through the wire of Lily’s tiny cage, Theresa said her life changed forever. In honor of Lily, National Mill Dog Rescue was established in February 2007 and has since rescued more than 11,800 puppy mill survivors. Consider finding an organization that will help you find a pet who really needs a good home. ARTS+CULTURE AUGUST 18 & 19 Join Control Group Productions, the Broomfield Depot Museum, the Depot Museum Friends, and the City and County of Broomfield, for neverhome, an avant-garde performance-based walking tour, on August 18 and 19 in Zang Spur Park. neverhome is not a play, it’s not a dance recital, and it’s not a theater-style show. It is thought-provoking performance art. Poetry by Pablo Neruda is combined with contemporary dance, physical installations, moving tableaux, and original scripting and music, to deliver a poetic experience of travel, flight, and the search for a new home. The performers and the audience will flow together throughout the park, beginning on the museum grounds, taking everyone along for the experience. The presentation explores the act of migration, its corresponding experience of displacement, and a feel for the impermanence of place and self in an ever-changing world. The all-ages-friendly performance draws together many stories of human migration in a loose narrative untethered from any one specific context, according to Patrick Mueller, founder and artistic director of Control Group. A tour guide will lead audiences along a short, ADA-compliant route, following two dancers on a journey through the urban and natural environs around the museum. Performances are about an hour long, and will be presented three times each day on August 18 and 19 at 5:00 p.m., 6:15 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. at the Broomfield Depot Museum. Control Group Productions will present subsequent additional performances elsewhere in the metro area, each tailored to its locale. Gearing Up for Broomfield’s
Mini Haha Triathlon By Sara Baker
O
n Saturday, August 26 the 16th annual Mini Haha Triathlon will be held at the Broomfield Community Center. The event is geared toward beginner and recreational athletes with 70% of participants having never competed in a triathlon before. So if you have been thinking about trying a triathlon, this race is for you! You can register as an individual or as a team. Teams can choose to participate in all three events, in which case all three times will be averaged together, or members can choose one of three events. Participants will swim 300 yards in the community center indoor pool, bike a 5.5-mile loop twice for a total of 11 miles, followed by a 2-mile run or walk finishing at the Bay Aquatic Park. Awards will be presented to the first three finishers in each age group for men and women as well as the top three teams. Raffle prizes, music, and food will be available at the finish line to celebrate all athletes. If you have children who are interested in trying something new, there is a Mini Haha for kids on Sunday, August 27. Children 6 to 8 years old will swim 25 yards, bike 1-mile, and run a 1/4 mile. 9-11 year old children will swim 50 yards, bike 2 miles, and run a 1/2 mile. Lastly, children 12-13 will complete a 100 yard swim, a 4-mile bike ride, and a 1-mile run. You can register for either event by mail or drop off your registration form at either the Broomfield Community Center or the Paul Derda Recreation Center. Packet pick-up begins on August 22 and it is recommended to pick up your packet prior to race day. Along with other goodies, you will receive two free tickets to the Bay for the day of the triathlon. Dawn Rachjaibun, the Program Manager of Aquatics and Triathlon states, “The Mini Haha Triathlon as well as the Kids Mini Haha events are amazing events, designed to get the entire community and family involved together. We encourage families and friends to make goals together, train together, and most of all, have fun together. Because both events are designed for the beginner, it is a great opportunity to try something new and different in a fun and family friendly environment. What makes this event special and different from other events, is the amazing positive attitudes and motivational spirit of the participants, coming together to help everyone accomplish and succeed during the event to get to the finish line. When you see everyone crossing that finish line, you truly feel inspired!”

It’s the back-to-school news no parent wants to hear: Lice have been identified in your child’s classroom. While it’s not cause for panic, it is a health matter that merits some rapid and ongoing attention. Here’s what I advise the families I see.

• Lice can and do affect all populations. Children seem to be especially popular hosts, as do females and those with longer hair. Kids of all backgrounds are affected, and more frequent shampooing does not provide immunity. Lice do not use animals as vectors (meaning humans will not catch lice from pets), and they cannot fly or jump, which means they typically are transmitted from one human head to another. Their lifespan without a host is short—only about 48 hours at most.

• Watch for the symptoms. Evidence includes an itchy scalp, small bumps, and marks where scratching has occurred. These scratch marks can become infected, but that is rare. Upon examination, you may see the larger adults or tiny nits (immature lice) on the hair shaft, close to the scalp.

• Over-the-counter remedies are a good place to start. Topical products developed specifically to fight lice are usually all that’s needed. The key is to follow the protocol that comes with the lice medication about when, how, and how often to use it. Most involve using a very finetooth comb after treatment to find and remove the lice on the hair shaft. Start at the base of the follicle and comb through to the very end. Do this consistently—every day for 15 to 30 minutes, at first— and continue for several weeks, as nits can persist after treatment. A combing-only approach can be effective for those wanting to avoid chemicals … but persistence is critical. Natural remedies, such as mayonnaise and olive oil, have not been found to be effective. And DO NOT use gasoline, kerosene or any other flammable product. • Know when to talk with your doctor. Do call your child’s physician if your child is under the age of two, has asthma or allergies, or if other health issues are involved. If the problem is not resolved, prescription treatment is available. It is generally not necessary to keep kids out of school, but a call to the school nurse is advisable. Tell your kids why personal items—such as brushes, combs, barrettes, hats, and hoodies—should be kept in an area away from other children’s belongings and not shared. • On the home front … think in terms of 48 hours. Since that’s the time lice can live without a host, wash all clothing, linens, towels, and other items used in the last two days. Hot water is best. Dry cleaning is another option, and that favorite stuffed animal can be sealed in a plastic bag for a week or two if it can’t be washed by hand or machine. They’re cute and cuddly. Their adorable antics are heartwarming and sometimes hilarious. When they look at you with sad puppy eyes or serenade you with tiny kitten meows, they are practically irresistible.
B
ut before you add a baby puppy, kitten, or bunny to your home, you should carefully consider their unique needs, their potential impact on your lifestyle and how they will fit into your family. “Puppies and kittens are babies, and much like a baby, they need a lot of care,” said Maia Brusseau, public relations manager for the Denver-based Dumb Friends League animal shelter. “They are going to need to go out more, they are going to be more playful, kittens will often end up chasing your feet at 2:00 a.m. under the bed covers.” Potential owners of baby pets should consider their special dietary needs, initial and ongoing costs, socialization and behavioral issues, and how the animal will fit into their lives for years to come. “Young pets have fragile digestive systems so diet choices will need to be tested,” said Bridgette Chesne, director of animal behavior and sheltering at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley. “Chew toys, kennels, and identification tags should be purchased and ready for use. “Positive social experiences for young animals are critical — exposure to other animals, children, a variety of adult people, vehicles, etc. — need to be arranged and accomplished early in life.” Something prospective dog owners often don’t consider when adopting a tiny, fluffy ball of cuteness is that the puppy might grow into a much larger dog than they expect. This is especially true when adopting a mixed-breed puppy from a shelter that may not be able to predict a puppy’s full-grown size. That goes for temperament as well. “Sometimes people really want to know an animal’s personality, and if you adopt an adult animal, you’re more likely to have an idea of the type of animal you are going to have,” said Brusseau.

Cost Considerations
What could a tiny kitten or pint-sized puppy need besides food, water, and love? More than you might think. Puppies and kittens tend to cost more to buy or adopt than their older counterparts, and medical costs are likely to be greater for baby animals when you consider early vaccinations, boosters, microchipping, and spay or neuter costs. And that’s just the beginning. “Enclosures for small pets, toys for puppies and kittens, travel accessories like leashes and collars, and husbandry items such as grooming utensils, add up quickly,” said Chesne. While these costs may ease as your pet grows into adulthood, pet owners should be prepared for up to two decades of care and costs when they make the decision to bring a baby animal into their family. “For individuals or families with limited resources, we recommend considering adopting a more mature animal,” said Chesne.
Time and Attention
Just like human youngsters, baby animals will require time, attention, and commitment to teach them good behaviors. “Housetraining for puppies requires hourly visits outdoors so family members will need to divvy up time commitments,” said Chesne. While kittens have a paw up on their canine counterparts in this department because they are often litter trained with little effort, they have their own set of habits that may bedevil their owners, including scratching furniture. And puppies, especially when teething, can be voracious chewers. Unwanted or destructive canine and feline behaviors can be eliminated and good behaviors established, but owners must be committed to investing time and energy to train their new pet.
Bringing Up Bunnies
Even though bunnies appear cuddly, they generally don’t like to be held, and while they can make wonderful pets, they are not considered easy to care for. Rabbits can live 12 to 15 years and need exercise outside of their cage. They can be trained to use a litterbox with patience. The Dumb Friends League recommends families do their research before adopting a bunny, especially if they have young children.
Where to Adopt
“We encourage the adoption option when selecting a pet,” said Brusseau. “Wonderful animals are available at shelters, and organizations like ours offer health services, training opportunities, and one-on-one behavior advice.” Shelters often include spay/neuter, vaccination, and other expenses in their adoption fees, which can ease the cost impact of adopting a new pet. Visiting multiple agencies and a variety of animals can help a family determine which animal is right for them, said Chesne. “Most shelters and rescues have active websites and social media accounts where available animals are visible,” said Chesne. “Daily review of these sites can maximize the likelihood of finding animals that may be a good fit for a family.”

Dog walking and hiking with our canine companions is a favorite past time for many of us. And just as we need to tend to our own safety and best interests when hiking, it’s just as essential to do the same for your dog.

While it’s important to look for groomed routes and choose shady trails with soft or dusty terrain, hiking with a dog requires some additional consideration. For example, being mindful of trail etiquette, keeping your dog on a leash or under voice and sight command (where allowed), carrying adequate waste pick-up bags and bringing along enough water for the both of you are necessary considerations. Before leaving the house, keep these requirements in mind to start. Curious and excited dogs are happy dogs, but believe it or not other trail visitors may not like to be eagerly greeted by your ambitious dog. For that reason, be sure to have the pup on a retractable, harnessed or chained leash when approaching others along the trail.

Broomfield Schools Get Summer Upgrades By Kristen Beckman
Students returning to several schools in Broomfield this month will notice a variety of changes thanks to bond funding approved by voters in 2014 and 2016.

unding provided by a bond approved in 2014 for the Boulder Valley School District is supporting 63 total projects across the district, including three in Broomfield. The projects follow the district’s “Building for Student Success” theme that envisions modernizing education facilities to allow for collaborative and flexible learning. All of the projects are expected to be completed in 2020, said Susan Cousins, BVSD’s bond communication specialist.
Students at Emerald Elementary will experience the most dramatic transformation of the projects in Broomfield. Construction crews are putting the finishing touches on an entirely new school building to replace the existing building, which was built in 1958. Cousins said students finished the school year in the existing building, which is now being demolished, and the new facility will be ready to go when students return in August. Construction on the new building began in June 2016 and is finishing this summer with final details on the playground, parking lots, and sidewalks. The district elected to do a whole-building replacement because the existing school was one of

the oldest in Broomfield and some of its systems had deteriorated over time. “It gets to a point where the cost for renovations and repairs is more significant than the value of the building, so it makes sense to invest in something new rather than repair something that is only going to get you to a certain quality,” said Cousins. In addition, the school’s floor plan wasn’t conducive to modern instructional methods that the district is working to foster in its schools, including flexible teaching environments that promote collaboration, she said. Other schools throughout the district have directed their grant money to smaller projects that also reflect innovating teaching principles, said Cousins. Each school gets an allotment of the funding and can use it to renovate any part of the building they want. Broomfield High School is using its allotment to renovate its library, a common choice among the district’s schools, said Cousins, because the library is a place that all students have access to and can share in the benefit provided by the grant. The Broomfield High School library will transform into a library commons that includes spaces optimized for collaboration as well as smaller, individualized spaces. Traditional warehouse shelving will be replaced with a modified bookstore feeling, and an outdoor courtyard attached to the library will have a sidewalk café feel. A new design

lab and updated technology tools will also be made available to students. Work on the library at Broomfield High School is expected to take two summers. Outside work will continue throughout the school year and a second phase of inside construction work will recommence next summer, Cousins said Aspen Creek K-8 also is devoting a portion of its grant allotment to library improvements that will support group learning and collaboration as well as new video production technology. Core Tech renovations will support mixed learning communities, small groups and individuals, and a renovation of the computer lab for middle level students will support large
group presentations and small group work teams. In addition, students will have new desks and flexible seating options. Cousins said the construction projects were planned with thought given to minimizing the impact of construction on students during the school year, which included completing higher level school projects as early as possible. “We wanted to make sure we were doing work in various communities, but we don’t want students to have to go through a construction experience in all the schools they attend,” said Cousins. The bond projects also include improvements to district administrative facilities, including bus facilities and the district kitchen. “We’re really pleased with the progress we’ve made so far and certainly very excited about how this work is going to benefit students and staff,” said Cousins. Construction also is underway on a new preschool through eighth-grade school in Anthem, part of the Adams 12 Five Star School district. The school is projected to eventually serve 900 K-8 students and 128 preschool students. Construction activities taking place this summer include pouring concrete foundation walls, building structural walls, and bringing utility line extensions into the building. “This new school is a centerpiece of the bond approved by voters in November 2016,” said Kevin Denke, bond communications specialist for the district. “Construction started on the school in April and is anticipated to be completed for the start of the 2018-19 school year.”

Each August, thousands of students in Colorado start the school year without the school supplies they need to be successful. A Precious Child and other local organizations collect school supplies during the summer with the goal of providing those students with the school supplies they need to start the school year off right.
A Precious Child, a local nonprofit organization, collects school supplies starting in late June and continuing through the beginning of August from community members and through corporate supply drives with a goal of providing backpacks filled with grade-appropriate school supplies so children in need can reach their maximum academic potential. Among the supplies being collected are crayons, markers, glue, glue sticks, scissors, pencils, erasers, folders, notebooks, paper, rulers, and pens. A donation of $50 provides one fully equipped backpack for a student in need. The organization set a goal of serving more than 12,000 children this year across eight counties, including Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson, and Weld. Students who are equipped with the proper supplies to participate in school have lower truancy rates and often more positive self-esteem, the organization said. For the second year this year, A Precious Child challenged 12 corporations to see which one could collect the most backpacks, supplies, and funds. Participants include Alliance Data, The Arvada Chamber of Commerce, Checkers Safety Group, Enterprise Holdings, Google, GHX, Guardian Storage Solutions, Key Equipment Finance, Level 3 Communications, Medtronic, The Metro North Chamber, and Oracle. Last year’s corporate challenge winner, GHX, provided more than 700 backpacks. “Ensuring children in need are equipped with the proper tools to succeed in school is the foundation of our Fill A Backpack program,” said Carina Martin, founder and chief executive officer of A Precious Child. “We know that children with the necessary resources can embrace their education more fully, and that obtaining academic success is an essential element in the fight against breaking the cycle of poverty.” The Fill A Backpack program is supported by Guardian Storage Solutions, Cloud Peak Energy, Kinder Morgan Foundation, DePaul Real Estate Advisors, and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. The Crayons to Calculators program also collects school supplies for children in need. Created in 2005 by the Impact on Education foundation, the collection effort is a collaboration among five nonprofit organizations to support the Boulder Valley School District and St. Vrain Valley School District to ensure all students start the school year with the supplies they need to succeed. The program typically provides about 10,000 backpacks to students in the two districts. Students can request a backpack through their school, which arranges discreet delivery of supplies through administration or counselors. Sports Safety Tips for Families and Kids By Sara Baker
Over 36 million children from ages 5 to 18 participate in organized sports each year.
B
efore participating in a sport, many states require players to get a sports physical. A sports physical determines if it is safe for children to participate in a certain sport. In Colorado, according to the Colorado High School Activities Association, “A student may not practice or compete without a physical exam that is signed by an MD, DO, or chiropractor who is school physical certified, or a nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant licensed by the State of Colorado. It must be current within the last 12 months and on file with principal or athletic director prior to the first practice.” If your child is younger than high school aged, check with their sports organization for the requirements. Even if it is not required, a sports physical can be a good idea to ensure there are no underlying conditions that might present themselves during participation. Sport physicals usually include both a fairly comprehensive medical history and physical exam. The physical helps parents, coaches, and medical personnel understand each athlete and lets coaches be aware of any athletes who might need special considerations. Sport physicals are available at numerous locations such as Walgreens Healthcare Clinics, The Little Clinic inside of many King Soopers, and as well as many urgent care facilities. With the increase in popularity of youth sports, injuries commonly occur. Sports injuries can vary widely from common injuries such as sprains and strains, repetitive motion injuries, and heat-related illnesses, to serious injuries such as broken bones and concussions. A sprain is in an injury to a ligament and a strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon. Treatment for sprains and strains usually includes rest and/or immobilization. Repetitive motion injuries are becoming more common as kids’ sports are becom-

ing more competitive and specialized. Treatment of stress fractures, a hairline fracture of the bone and a common repetitive use injury, can include crutches, immobilization, and physical therapy. Inflammation of a tendon, known as tendinitis can also occur from overuse, and rest, ice, compression, and elevation are often recommended treatments. Heat-related illnesses are also common and these can be dangerous as children do not perspire as much as adults because they require a higher core body temperature to trigger sweating. These illnesses include dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion can include nausea, dizziness, weakness, headache, and pale and moist skin. Heat stroke, which is more serious, can include dizziness, confusion, and hot dry skin. Concussions, though not as common as some of the other injuries mentioned, can be serious in children. Concussions can be caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or when a child is hit on the body in a way that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. Dr. Mark Wisthoff, who practices family and sports medicine at St. Anthony’s North, said, “It is important for parents and coaches to recognize concussion symptoms and be advocates for young athletes. If there is any concern for concussion, the athlete should be pulled from participation for that day and monitored. It is also important that if a concussion is diagnosed
that the student athlete not return to play too soon. The focus should be about getting them back to academics first and then to sports performance. Symptoms that are worsening or lasting longer than a week should be evaluated by a physician with concussion experience.” Concussion signs can include not being able to recall events prior to or after a hit or fall, appearing dazed, forgetting an instruction, being confused or unsure of what is happening, moving clumsily, answering questions slowly, losing consciousness or showing behavior or personality changes. If your child tells you that they are nauseous, light bothers them, they have a headache, have blurry or double vision or feel dizzy or not quite right, they should be evaluated. Continue to check for any of the listed symptoms for several days after the injury and if the symptoms get worse, take your child to see their doctor or to the emergency room. The most common treatment for concussions is rest. Children should be symptom free which can take days or even several weeks. Immediately following the injury, children should rest both physically and cognitively. The best prevention for any of these injuries includes having your child play with an organization that is committed to injury prevention. Coaches should be trained in first aid and CPR and know the proper use of equipment. Warm-ups and cool-downs are important for any participation as well as access to water or sports drink if playing in a very hot and humid environment. Parents should learn safety rules for their children’s sports and should avoid allowing their child to play if very tired or in any type of pain. Playing in organized sports can be very valuable to children but precautions should be taken to make sure your child can continue to reap the benefits of sports for many years.

Through Storytelling By Bette Erickson
Although the lights were muted in the classroom, the room was brightly lit; it came from smiles.
D
ozens of children sitting upright and attentive almost mesmerized, by the adult expertly narrating and ad-libbing a folktale while making use of plenty of hand gestures and eye contact. Such is the scene when a volunteer storyteller from Spellbinders® visits a classroom. The 501(c)3 nonprofit is dedicated to restoring the art of oral storytelling, connecting seniors and youngsters. The organization, founded in 1988 by Germaine Dietsch, trains people in oral storytelling and places them as volunteer storytellers in their local schools, and elsewhere. The result? Igniting kids’ imaginations, broadening multicultural understanding and building on literacy skills. Storytelling traditionally bridges the gap between generations, and encourages listeners to create their own visual of what they are hearing. Spellbinder volunteer Kay Landers explains that Dietsch began a pilot program with the Denver Public Schools training seniors in the art of storytelling. The seniors loved the children, and the children loved the seniors and their stories. The program was a success for everyone involved. As a result, in 1997 Spellbinders® became a Colorado nonprofit with a goal of establishing other Chapters. Currently there are 16 Chapters across the Front Range. Spellbinder stories include fables, folktales, and fairy tales and are told in an engaging, participatory way – not merely reading to children. They’re fun to watch. Broomfield resident Judy Lloyd has volunteered with the organization for half a dozen years. “I knew when I retired that I wanted to volunteer with children,” said Lloyd. She volunteers at Jefferson Academy telling stories to first and fourth graders. Lloyd is the Chair of the Broomfield Spellbinders and serves on the Board of Directors overseeing all 16 Chapters. The oldest of eight siblings, she read to her younger brothers and sisters as a child. “I like that I get to use my voice and my words to tell a story and not just read from a book,” she added. The camaraderie of the Broomfield Spellbinders group is another

aspect of the organization Lloyd enjoys. Landers noted that the program welcomes anyone who likes telling stories and volunteering in school classrooms, senior centers, and at community events. Moreover, the support volunteers receive is ongoing. The Broomfield Spellbinders Chapter meets monthly, except in June and July, at 1:00 p.m. the third Friday of the month at the Brunner Farm House, 640 Main St. After a short business meeting, the members (some 35 Spellbinder volunteers and growing) share experiences and enjoy training and an instructive program, often with visiting professional storytellers. Spellbinder volunteer storytellers are asked to do one story annually at a venue of their choosing and often members co-tell fables together – a comfortable team approach. Participants pay $45 annually and get to share their favorite stories in various places such as community centers, schools, Boy Scout and Girl Scout meetings, and the popular Spooky Tales in October at the Community Center. Look for the group Saturday, September 16 at Broomfield Days at Midway Park.
