FROM THE

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean, Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens, Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance, And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance. Dance … I hope you dance. ~ Lee Ann Womak, “I Hope You Dance”

T

he start of the school year is a bit magical. It is filled with new beginnings and fresh starts. It presents opportunity and redirection. It is a clean slate and a chance to start over. To embark and to become. Children may not consciously understand this, but it is a feeling that is manifest in entering a classroom with a new teacher and different friends, wearing a pair of new shoes, and carrying a backpack filled with just-purchased supplies. It is the confidence of a fresh haircut and the excitement of the months ahead. As the wife of a teacher and the mother of two, like so many others, our world revolves around the school year. This fall as I watch my husband return to his classroom to teach and my younger daughter start the second half of her high school career, we also send our oldest off to begin her college career. The air is filled with promise. This year, I am also taking on a new “learning” challenge. Earlier this summer I received an invitation to participate as a dancer in the Broomfield Community Foundation’s Dancing with the Stars 2016. I write this on the eve of my first lesson with my teacher and partner Lucio Escuadra of Booth Dance Denver. I have to admit, this is a bit out of my comfort zone. Many friends have asked me what I plan to do for the performance. My first thought is, “not fall down.” But I am excited to embark on something new and I am honored to be part of this great event that raises money to help so many in the Broomfield community. I am thinking about music selections and recalling my childhood tap class and my high school cheerleading days. It will be like riding a bike, right? I am excited for the journey and looking forward to the dance. I hope to see you there.

Protect Your Heirs! (Part 5 of 6) Free Estate Planning Workshop This entertaining educational workshop is designed to expose the real truth about estate planning and the often complicated issues that surround it. You will learn how death taxes work and the misconceptions about wills and trusts. You will also learn how to protect the inheritance from your children’s creditors and their spouses in the event of a divorce. Workshop dates are listed below. Reservations are required so call to reserve your spot today!

August 10 at 6:00 pm - Westminster August 18 at 6:30 pm - Longmont August 23 at 12:30 pm – Brighton Estate Planning ·Wills/Trusts ·Business Planning Efficient Probate and Trust Administration More than 40 Years of Combined Experience

193 S. 27th Ave. 541 Main Street, Brighton, CO Longmont, CO 303.654.0100 303.774.1976 www.EstatePlansThatWork.com

Estate planning is more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can provide so much more to protect your family. Most of these protections are ignored in form-driven estate plans. By example…. Mary and Bill left their son John a substantial inheritance. John had a nice family and successful career. Then came the accident. John had lost control of his car and crashed into a school bus full of children. Many were hurt. John was sued and found negligent. The resulting claim far exceeded his auto insurance limits. After the insurance paid $1,000,000 to those injured, he faced at a court judgment of more than $3,000,000. John was now bankrupt. Then he learned the good news. Bill and Mary had sought legal advice before their deaths. The first lawyer they spoke with said they did not need estate planning, because their estate was not death taxable. He told them to put beneficiary designations on everything to John, because “it is simple and avoids probate.” They weren’t comfortable with that advice, and sought advice from a counseling-oriented attorney who took the time to learn more about them, their estate, and their goals. Their primary objective was to protect John after their deaths. So Bill and Mary left their assets in trust for John, not directly to him. As a result, John was able to keep his inheritance after the accident. While they never thought this would happen to their son, their foresight paid off. Bill and Mary had sometimes wondered if the planning they did was worth the extra time and effort. Clearly it was worth it.

TIPS FOR A

Developing a Healthy Sleep Schedule

FOR YOUR KIDS Are You Curious About New Hearing Aid Technology? Flatirons Audiology is offering a NEW program for patients to come in and TEST DRIVE our new and exciting hearing aids! Just call to schedule your TEST DRIVE visit on

and pick up a set of the latest hearing aids to take out for a spin for an entire week at NO COST OR OBLIGATION to you.

By Ryan Flint, DO

The end of summer break is right around the corner. As you prepare to head back to school this fall, it is important to pay attention to your child’s sleep schedule. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that any school-age child receives between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night. But it is important to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all number for how much sleep your child needs each night. Some kids might need more than 11 hours, however, kids rarely do well with less than nine. Watching your child’s behavior is a great way to recognize if he or she is getting the correct amount of sleep. If your child is acting sleepy or cranky during the day, has a hard to get out of bed in the morning or is having trouble focusing on schoolwork and other tasks, you should consider adjusting your child’s sleep schedule.

Here are some tips to help your child ease back into a new sleep schedule and help make sure that he or she does not start the school year on the wrong side of the bed: • Gradually re-establish a school sleep schedule – incrementally enforce a bedtime and wake your child up when you would need to during the school year, beginning prior to the first week of school.

Please call 303.664.9111 soon, to schedule your appointment. Space will be limited.

• Maintain a consistent bedtime routine – before bedtime, start a “quiet time” to allow your child to unwind. The routine should include relaxing activities, such as a bath and a bed-time story or a reading time.

All major insurance plans accepted.

• Avoid big meals close to bedtime – a late meal could prevent your child from falling asleep. • Avoid caffeine – sodas and other caffeinated drinks should be limited after noon. • Be a role model – set a good example for your child. Establish your own regular sleep schedule which promotes healthy sleep habits.

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT

School Supply Drives

Aim to Equip Students in Need By Kristen Beckman

For many students, the start of a new school year is filled with excitement, anticipation, and a trip to the store to stock up on school supplies. But for up to 190,000 Colorado children living in poverty, the start of the new school year serves as a reminder that they don’t have the basic supplies they need. “It is really difficult for kids to be successful without these tools,” said Lisandra Gonzales, chief operating officer of A Precious Child, one organization working to ensure underprivileged children have the school supplies they need to be successful in school. The organization’s Fill A Backpack program provides a new backpack filled with supplies to children who otherwise might not have the supplies they need for school. The backpacks are tailored to meet the needs of specific age groups. The program is one of 12 programs A Precious Child provides to children in eight counties across the Denver area, including Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson, and Weld. Last year the program provided 8,472 backpacks filled with supplies to students in all eight counties, and served 33,588 children total across its programs. Because the backpack program was founded in Broomfield, A Precious Child fills 100 percent of the backpack requests it receives in Broomfield. Backpacks are distributed via organizations and agencies that have direct contact with children who need them, including hospitals, nonprofits, churches, and police departments. “We’re essentially focused on removing barriers to a child’s education so they can be successful,” said Gonzales. “One of the things that is so critical for kids at school is to be well-equipped, because then they have a little bit more of an even playing field to be successful. “What we are trying to accomplish is taking a child out of the cycle of poverty,” continued Gonzales. “It’s a complicated thing to do, but we know that education is one thing that can help bring a child out of the cycle of poverty.” Those who want to help can purchase a backpack and fill it with supplies, drop off supplies during a supply drive or in bins located throughout the community, make monetary donations, host a fundraiser or supply drive, or become a sponsor. A list of needed supplies and drop-off location as well as details about hosting a drive and donating funds is available at www.apreciouschild.org. Crayons to Calculators in Louisville also collects school supplies to distribute to kids in need. The group hopes to provide backpacks full of supplies to 10,000 students in the Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley school districts. Students who need supplies can request a backpack through their school, where administrators and counselors are trained to distribute the backpacks discreetly. Crayons to Calculators asks schools to forecast their needs each spring for the coming school year, and delivery of supplies takes place one week before school starts. The program accepts donations of supplies, monetary donations, and volunteer time. More information and a list of needed supplies is available at www.crayonstocalculators.org

BUILDING

BETTER

SCHOOLS IN BROOMFIELD By Dan Powers

Several Broomfield public schools within the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) are undergoing significant upgrades in efficiency, classroom design, air quality, and more as funds from a voter-approved bond measure in 2014 are put to use. A combination of improved learning environments, savvy integrated building systems, and reduced energy costs are helping make these schools some of the most innovative academic facilities in the area.

I

n Broomfield, BVSD schools under construction include Broomfield Heights Middle School, Emerald Elementary, and Birch Elementary. Broomfield High, Kohl Elementary, and Aspen Creek K-8 are in design phases for improvements. “When we talk about the renovations that will happen across the District, a key theme is expanding educational opportunities,” said Susan Cousins, BVSD’s Bond Communications Specialist. While some changes may be subtle and others will be quite obvious, all of the projects are focused on how to enhance and maintain a healthy learning environment as detailed in the

18

THE BROOMFIELDER™ AUGUST 2016

District’s educational facility master plan. Many improvements will be clearly noticed, ranging from new carpet, tile, and paint, to new roofs, playground equipment, security cameras, and storage space. Some schools need new pavement and irrigation systems, and others need plumbing and electrical system upgrades. “There may be some things that aren’t as exciting, but are very necessary to maintain the buildings,” said Susan. On the other hand, more variety and flexibility is being built into spaces at the schools for additional creative and functional learning modes throughout the day, she

added. In fact, all the projects are being guided by BVSD’s “Innovation Guiding Principles” with a theme of building student success via nextgeneration learning environments. The goal is to create learning environments that are agile and multi-functional to support the learning needs of students for years to come. From moving walls to creating different floor plans with multiple classes and teachers in open commons area, to rooms designed as “makers’ spaces,” areas for quiet activities, and overall philosophy enabling collaborative learning – these upgrades are making Broomfield schools as innovative as possible. Emerald Elementary is the largest of the projects, as the old school is being demolished and a completely new school is being built. The new school will have the same square footage, however it will be two stories, so the footprint will be smaller and the design allows for more energy efficiency and interior flow of activities and students. The gym will remain and be incorporated into the new building (Check out 3-D videos modeling the Emerald Curiosity Center and the full design presentation on the projects page at http://bond.bvsd.org). For a few schools in the bond program they are doing a “deep energy retrofit.” When there is a significant remodeling of mechanical systems, typically heating, air conditioning, ventilation, windows, roofing etc. there is an opportunity to implement a much more integrated design. “We look at how all those components can be more effective and efficient working together,” said Susan. Emerald Elementary offers a special opportunity to compare the energy costs between the former and new school; Susan described that they project a 58% reduction in energy use. “Annual savings will be about $12,000. We measure this in Energy Use Intensity (EUI) which correlates to energy used per square foot per year. Emerald is currently at an EUI of 73 and our energy modeling brings us to nearly 30,” she said. Similarly, Broomfield Heights will see a 30% EUI reduction through its retrofit – while at the same time adding air conditioning. “We’re seeing cost savings as well as improved air quality and comfort for students and staff. We project $13,000 in annual energy savings,” said Susan.

For some of the schools targeted to receive funding, like Birch Elementary, air conditioning upgrades are crucial because the school is being used throughout the summer for additional classes and programming. “These upgrades will really help the learning atmosphere in the schools over the summertime, when people may not realize we are still actually using the space for classroom activities,” she added. The air conditioning and heating system upgrades are particularly important, as each school will experience better air quality and more nuanced temperature control. These subtle characteristics of the learning environment (and sometimes not so subtle – concentrating when the room is sweltering or chilly is not easy) will be better managed and in turn provide a better learning environment. Each principal and network of parents and teachers have the chance to discuss how the bond funds can implement new flexible learning options. “There are opportunities throughout all the schools to use these bond funds for innovative learning spaces, each one has a certain amount they can spend,” said Susan. In his message to the community in May, BVSD Superintendent Dr. Bruce Messinger highlighted the oversight for the entire bond program by the Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee. “The group has met regularly since May 2015 to review financial reports and project progress. When necessary, the committee reviews and makes recommendations for changes to project scopes of work and budgets,” said Dr. Messinger. “Meetings are open to the public and there is an opportunity for public comment at each meeting.”

BACK TO SCHOOL NUTRITION:

KEEP YOUR FAMILY

FOCUSED ENERGIZED AND

with Smart Choices and a Little Planning By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham

G

ood food is a key component of mental focus and overall health, but few of us make the time to start our own or our kids’ days with a healthy meal, and lunch is often neglected too. Remember that nutritious food helps you and your children stay energized and focused; healthy meals aid concentration and productivity and help prevent blood sugar crashes. Include a balance of high-quality lean protein (eggs, tofu, and chicken), healthy fats (nuts, seeds, avocado), and plenty of vegetables and whole grains. Preparing your family’s breakfast and lunch every day doesn’t need to be overly complicated or time-consuming, but it definitely saves time if you plan ahead and cook in batches. Taking the time to plan for and make healthy breakfasts and packed lunches for you and your kids is absolutely worth it!

20

THE BROOMFIELDER™ AUGUST 2016

Recruit your family to assist with your healthy eating commitment. Within reason, let kids help choose meals for the week, including breakfasts and packed lunches. Set a budget and stick to it. Grocery shopping and meal planning can be a great learning experience for kids – colors, numbers, shapes, the alphabet, geography, math, and more can all be incorporated.

Simple make-ahead breakfast ideas include hard-boiled eggs, oatmeal or other whole-grain hot cereals, breakfast burritos or yogurt with fruit and granola. As always, read ingredient labels carefully to make sure the product doesn’t have tons of excess sugars – this is especially important with nut butters, jams, flavored yogurts, and packaged granolas.

Kids – even young ones – can help pack their own lunches. Whether it’s placing a few grapes in a container or making sandwiches, having some control and knowledge of what they’re eating can minimize waste.

Be mindful of portion control. Having tiny portions of lots of different things is more interesting to most kids, and might help convert picky eaters. Ask your kids to bring home the remains of their lunches; if you’re seeing a ton of leftover food, cut down portions or incorporate new items – or both.

Always include a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Whole foods keep kids fueled and focused.

Refresh leftovers to make something interesting for lunch, such as a grain salad. When it’s cold out, homemade soup in a thermos offers a comforting warm meal.

While packed lunches are healthy and frugal, they also generate massive amounts of waste. Invest in simple washable bento boxes; the compartments keep food looking nice and tasting its best. Your local dollar or thrift stores are great sources of inexpensive containers perfect for packed lunches

n Thursday, September 29, Dancing with the Broomfield Stars returns to the 1STBANK Center for the 7th year. The event pairs eight Broomfield “Stars” – novice dancers from the Broomfield community – with dance instructors from local Metro-area dance studios. Similar to the popular television show, the Broomfield Stars and dance instructors practice for several weeks and then showcase their rehearsed dance on the night of the event. This year’s show will be emceed by Belen De Leon of 9News and will be a fun-filled evening with great food, entertainment, and a fantastic opportunity for attendees to give back to the community in the name of their favorite dancer. Attendees vote for their favorite dancers through donations. The couple who brings in the most money will be declared the winners. You don’t need to attend the event to weigh in on the competition – you can vote for your favorite dancers via online donations. All proceeds from the event benefit the Broomfield Community Foundation. The Broomfield Community Foundation’s purpose is to accept contributions and provide support through grants to non-profit groups providing services throughout the Broomfield community. The Foundation’s mission is to inspire the community to connect people with causes that meet the needs of neighbors through caring, compassion, and charitable giving. The event would not be possible without the generous donations and support of many local restaurants and businesses, or without the dedication and donation of instruction and studio time from the professional dance instructors. Ryan Shanahan of Joyful Ballroom Dance, is looking forward to participating for the second year and states, “I got involved last year. I had a great time with it. Getting to know the organizers, the other instructors, and their stars was a wonderful experience. After seeing how much this event helped out the community and how it brought so many together, of course I wanted to do it again this year. I’m looking forward to showcasing what my partner, Jennifer and I have been working hard on during these recent last few weeks.” Allison Johnson of Allison Johnson Dance is also coming back for her second year as an instructor. “This is my second year participating and I had so much fun last year. I’m ecstatic about dancing with Paul Derda – a man who has given so much of himself to this town – and will now give a few more smiles. I hope to someday make half the impact he has.” George and Nahetzin Grijalva of Loftea Café have been involved the past 5 years, as both a participating restaurant and performers. “We said yes initially because we wanted to help and get more involved with our Broomfield community. We have continued to say yes because it’s

a lot of fun and we continue to make that connection with the people of our community, the dancers, and help out in a great cause. We are looking forward to this year’s performances done by exceptionally brave people. From a professional point of view, I’m always amazed by the bravery the “stars” display and the level of professionalism they bring to this show having no previous performance experience. It’s not an easy task standing in a crowd of hundreds, most of them your peers, and becoming exposed performing a skill you just learned. And on top of that you have to make it look like that’s what you do every day. My favorite part is being backstage and watching them walk onto that big stage crossing the curtain from the back into the front and seeing them overcome their fears, their nerves, and their challenges.” The dancers also put in a great amount of time and effort to prepare for their performances and all have different reasons for participating. Joan Robinson, one of the Broomfield Stars states “I got involved with the Stars after going to the event last year. It is a wonderful fundraiser for Broomfield. I love to dance and I feel privileged to be considered to dance this year.” Jaq Poussot explains “I am involved because I am the second of three generations to be raised in Broomfield. I think the Foundation does amazing things for the community and I am eager to see them continue to grow and flourish!” Dave Manley, though new to dancing this year as a Star has been involved with the Broomfield Community Foundation since its founding in 1993. “The Foundation is a wonderful organization that really brings the power of many together and makes their efforts and dollars go farther to help many aspects of the community. I have been thinking about dancing for the last couple years as I really believe it is important to do things outside your comfort zone and this will really be that for me. To challenge yourself and raise money for a great cause is a combination I felt compelled to try.” Doors for the event open at 5:30 p.m. on September 29 and food is served from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. The show will begin at 7:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.broomfieldfoundation. org/dancing-with-the-broomfield-stars and include the show, food tastings, and parking. Broomfield’s Roads By Dan Powers

There have been numerous roadway improvement projects underway this year in Broomfield, with various levels of impacts on our daily commutes and errands. Here are a few of the bigger efforts shaping the flow of traffic around town.

L

owell Blvd. has been a focus for upgrades for several years; City of Broomfield Engineer Katie Allen said the vision for Lowell Blvd.’s improvements dates back to the Master Plan in 2006, when City Council saw the need to make several arterial roads throughout the city more efficient. There were some places with two lanes on one side and one lane on the other, places with and without sidewalks, and similar discrepancies. “This was due to various factors: some segments were built by developers, some were open space, etc.” said Katie. “As plans developed, Lowell Blvd. was divided into two projects. One half went from Midway south to 120th Ave. and has become a four-lane road nearing completion this month. The other project goes north from Midway to 136th Ave. which is a two-lane roadway with a vision including improvements such as new curbs, gutters and drainage, sidewalks, bike lanes, lighting, etc. “

Photos courtesy of www.broomfield.org

For the Lowell Blvd. north project, Katie expects the City will be accepting bids from developers this fall and shortly after that utility work will likely get started. While there isn’t a formal timeline yet, the project is imminent and key themes of the project will include: • Construct a two-lane arterial roadway section with bike lanes and center raised landscaped median; • Provide dedicated turn lanes at intersections where warranted; • Complete all missing curbs, gutters, and sidewalks; • Landscape the east side of road between curb and sidewalk; • Landscape the west side of the road along the Open Space with less formal native materials; • Bury any existing overhead utilities; • Install stand-alone streetlights; and • Install pedestrian level lights adjacent to Open Space.

26

THE BROOMFIELDER™ AUGUST 2016

The Lowell south section was just about complete as of press time. In April a status report to City Council estimated that the final paving would be placed at the end of May. However, that didn’t occur and Broomfield City Council has been vocal in their concerns over the length of time the upgrades have taken. In June City & County Manager Charles Ozaki and Katie Allen described the

We’re still working on the geometry of alternate road designs. We’re analyzing numerous factors based on community input; understanding the need to move forward with this project is a priority for the City.”

factors influencing the timing of this project. Rain and snow slowed the pace, plus it was prudent to wait for the construction of the Broomfield Veterinary Clinic to tap into water and sewer pipes before final paving. It is expected that all paving will be done in July and work on new irrigation and landscaped areas will be complete by the end of August.

There are capacity, safety, and drainage issues shaping this project.” Another major intersection improvement project is underway at the intersection of 120th Ave. and U.S. Hwy 36. In 2015 Broomfield made $2 million available for the 120th Avenue Connection Project, which is expected to be complete in 2018. The project is meant to ease traffic woes by connecting Colo. 128 and 120th Ave., creating an easier route from U.S. 36 and Wadsworth Parkway to 120th Ave.

One of Broomfield City Council’s 2016 priorities has been Dillon Road and West 144th Ave.; this is a regional roadway with connectivity to I-25, U.S. 287, and arterial street connections to Lafayette and Louisville. City Council ensured funding was in the 2016 budget to widen the corridor to four continuous through lanes from just west of South 120th Street to Sheridan Boulevard. The project will include the recommended bike and pedestrian path/lane improvements as well. “There are capacity, safety, and drainage issues shaping this project,” said Katie. “Dillon Road is more complicated because we have to get right-of-way access and acquire property depending on which design alternative is selected. There are a lot of technical items for us to get our arms around before we get started,” said Katie. The list includes a gas regulating station owned by Xcel Energy, an irrigation ditch owned by the Farmers Reservoir and Irrigation Company, water tanks, power lines, and residential property. “Based on comments from the public open house in March, we’re looking at a few different improvements and alignments,” said Kathryn Bergh, Broomfield’s CIP Project Manager. “We’re still working on the geometry of alternate road designs. We’re analyzing numerous factors based on community input; understanding the need to move forward with this project is a priority for the City.” For example, some residents had asked about including a frontage road in the design, however additional right-of-way purchases on the north side of Dillon Road were prohibitively expensive. There will be additional public meetings and presentations to Council over the next few months as design alternatives are refined. The final alignment selected will determine the number of properties, or pieces of property, the City needs to acquire.

THE BROOMFIELDERâ„¢ AUGUST 2016

FROM

By Jennifer Kerr, President and CEO, Broomfield Chamber of Commerce

Education & Economy A well-educated workforce is the foundation for economic success. Recently the Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) in partnership with Mercer Consulting reported that a highly educated and skilled workforce is Colorado’s main competitive advantage in attracting professional services and finance firms to move to or expand in Colorado. Colorado ranks 2nd in the number of citizens with a bachelor’s degree and has the 2nd best school system in the United States. In Colorado, high school graduates achieve ACT and SAT scores in the top 20th percentile for each test. Colorado also ranks 6th regarding fourth graders proficient or better in reading. These are all great statistics for our State. Yet we continue to hear about the need for a qualified workforce. The Colorado Workforce Development Council presented The Colorado Talent Pipeline Report to the Colorado State Legislature on October 15 of last year. While the report recognizes Colorado’s highly educated workforce, low unemployment rate and strong economy, it also points out the regional economies and educational attainment levels show a great variance. Colorado meets their workforce needs by attracting many highly educated employees from outside the state. They made a very important point, “Colorado must ensure that the education and training pipelines within our state are adequately preparing youth and adults for the workforce and are aligned with the needs of the economy.” Legislation has been passed recently that will provide support for career pathway development, providing additional support for special populations. However, we must take a look at how our community is doing in regards to education and meeting the needs of the local businesses. The Broomfield Chamber will be working to bring about collaboration between our business community and students to ensure their continued success after graduation. We will gain a better understanding of the skills and education required by our local businesses when searching for a qualified worker. As a Board Member of the Broomfield Workforce Center, we are also able to help promote all of their free services to both job seekers and businesses. Now is the time to invest in our future.
