FROM THE
Auld Lang Syne What do you know? You turn around and it’s almost the end of the year. “For auld lang syne,” as sung in the traditional song on New Year’s Eve, loosely translates to “for (the sake of) old times.” The verse poses a bit of a rhetorical question – should we remember or should we forget? I for one am a person who always enjoys remembering. we get ready to bid farewell to 2015, here at The Broomfielder™ we are preparing to look back and look ahead and look back again. Let me explain. 2016 is The Broomfielder’s 15th Anniversary year. I am proud to have been involved with the publication for about 12 of those years. We will be looking back throughout the year with special content around the number “15.” I want to extend a special thank you to our advertisers for your support through the years, and thank you to all of our friends and neighbors who read each month. You all helped us get here! Our partnership with the City of Broomfield is growing and you can look forward to more articles such as the Civic Center Update and the Mayor’s Column in the year ahead. We will help you keep a pulse on where our community is headed. As part of our look back we are planning some historical content around the people and events that shaped our community through the years. To support this, I am looking for photographs that show Broomfield in the early days. I am particularly interested in photos from the1950s to the 1990s. If you have any high resolution digital photos (scans are ok) to share for possible publication in The Broomfielder™, please email them to graphics@loudmouthmedia.com. The first photo deadline is January 10. This is one of those issues that really highlights so much that is good about Broomfield. If you are looking to get into the holiday spirit, check out the events listings for festive activities all month long. If you read The Broomfielder™ regularly you know that we aim to highlight our local non-profits year round but the annual Charitable Giving round-up is an extra special way to bring attention to many of our community’s worthy causes. I am also thrilled to have a guest article written by my daughter this month and on this very topic! So light the lights, fill your soul with music, and if you can, share your treasure with others in need. It is the most magical time of the year – make the most of it.
Merry Christmas and thanks for reading, Tina Eichner CORRECTION: The address for Hideaway Steakhouse was printed incorrectly in The Broomfielder’s November Talk of the Town issue. The correct address for Hideaway Steakhouse is 2345 West 112th Ave. in Westminster.

Discover Tech: Engineers Make a World of Difference Discover Tech: Engineers Make a World of Difference, a unique national traveling exhibition exploring how technology and engineering contribute to solving national and global problems, will be on display at the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library through January 5, 2016. “We are proud that Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library was selected to be one of nine sites nationwide to host the Discover Tech exhibition,” said Roberta Depp, Library Director. “We think people of all ages and backgrounds will find that the exhibition explores engineering and technology in a way that is understandable, inspiring, and relevant.” Discover Tech brings fun to scientific exploration with hands-on, multimedia activities on topics such as the creative and collaborative design process of engineering and how 21st-century technology (both highand low-tech) contributes to engineering advances. This includes games in which patrons answer trivia questions and find solutions for environmental and engineering puzzles, a working solar panel, and a working manual generator. In addition, various problem-solving stations involve the creation of water filtration systems, arch construction, and the Inventor’s Lab station that lets individuals build their own electric circuits. Anne Holland, a representative from the Space Science Institute, the organizer of the exhibition, said, “The Broomfield Library has been collaborating with science and technology partners for over a decade and seemed an appropriate institution to highlight the positive connections made between libraries and STEM organizations.” The American Library Association website said that this exhibition will help

people “realize that engineers are real people who, through a creative and collaborative design process, arrive at practical solutions to help solve society’s problems.” It also gives participants the chance to have fun while applying themselves to real issues. Eighth graders Stepheno Wescoat and Dominic Kent put a great deal of effort into the water filtration station and were very happy when their efforts succeeded. “It’s really fun,” Wescoat commented. “Don’t stop doing it when it’s hard.” Kent added, “It feels good when you finally finish what you start out to do.” The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of tours to be given for the duration of the exhibit: Tuesdays from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in addition to 4:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. To register for a tour, visit the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library Teen Zone Desk or call 720-887-2360. The exhibition is free and open to the public during library hours, which are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Sunday, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Discover Tech: Engineers Make a World of Difference was organized by Space Science Institute’s National Center for Interactive Learning (NCIL) in partnership with the American Library Association’s Public Programs Office, the Lunar and Planetary Institute, and the Afterschool Alliance. The project was made possible through support from the National Science Foundation.

HEALTHIER YOU TIPS FOR A
From St. Anthony North Health Campus
Beating the Winter Blues By Sara Diaz, DO
50 Million Americans Suffer From The Ringing In The Ears Called Tinnitus. Are you one of them? Tinnitus is highly annoying and difficult to endure. In addition, more than 90% of American Tinnitus Association members with tinnitus also report some hearing loss. There is no cure for tinnitus. However, “no cure” doesn’t mean “no help”! Call us today to schedule your tinnitus evaluation appointment and learn more about how we can help you manage your tinnitus.
W
ith the holidays around the corner, and as the days begin to shorten and sunlight becomes less abundant, turning inward to focus on wellbeing can be extremely beneficial to prevent the winter blues. If you have noticed that your mood has seemed to worsen with the change of seasons, you are not alone. Seasonal Affective Disorder affects one out of every ten Americans with the most common presenting symptoms being fatigue, irritability, depression, and weight gain. There are many holistic strategies that a person can incorporate in order to prevent or improve this change in mood. While medication may be needed in certain cases, there are many lifestyle changes that can be made to help in conjunction with traditional therapies.
1. EXERCISE: If exercise could be bottled up and patented in the way a pharmaceutical can, it would be a top seller of all medications on the market, especially when it comes to improving mood. Any form of exercise has shown in study after study to improve mood and wellbeing. There is no need to limit exercise to a certain type. Tune into your current state and connect with what your body really needs. Feeling amped up and anxious? Try more cardio or weights to channel your energy outward. Feeling depleted and fatigued? Often a restorative yoga session to connect with your body could be the answer, or a walk in nature to stimulate natural endorphins. Whatever you do, don’t stop moving, stagnation of the body will often lead to further stagnation of the mind.
2. MEDITATION: Research has shown that a tendency toward READER’S CHOICE
WINNER!
attachment to emotions has been linked to increased rates of depression and anxiety. Starting your morning with five minutes of deep breathing could be extremely powerful for changing the lens through which you see the rest of your day.
3. LIGHT: Heading outside for natural sunshine is proven to help reduce seasonal mood changes, if natural sunshine is not available try light box therapy. This will help boost natural production of vitamin D, a nutrient that has proven to be closely linked with mood and wellbeing. Julie Eschenbrenner, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology

Broomfield Civic Center Moves Closer to Realization By Kevin Standbridge, Deputy Manager, City & County of Broomfield
Realization of the Broomfield Civic Center will take its next step forward with the purchase of the vacant Safeway building at 6775 West 120th Ave. A closing on the $3,630,000 transaction is expected in December and the site will become a key part of the project, allowing the Center to extend south to the West 120th Ave. corridor.
T
he Civic Center is the term coined for the future “downtown” that is planned for the area west of the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library, east of Main Street from Community Park Drive south to, and including, the former Safeway Store on West 120th Avenue. The process to define the vision for this project stems back to the creation of the Civic Center Master Plan, which was approved in 2008. The overall theme of the project is to create a pedestrian friendly mixed use activity center that will attract local residents to its locally owned or otherwise desirable eateries, unique/boutique style retail outlets, and professional offices along with a limited number of residential opportunities. The park-like setting for the project will provide a unique offering of attractions for visitors to the area that complement the land uses and contribute to the vibrancy, economic vitality, and local character of the area. Through a community meeting, surveys and other community outreach venues, the Mayor and City Council continue to hear a strong desire from the community for locally owned, unique restaurants and retailers.
18
With the recovered economy, requests for proposals from two potential private sector partners were received late last year. The two proposers; Real Capital Solutions from Louisville and Urban Neighborhoods from Denver, working with City Street Investors and Evergreen, are established, successful place-making groups. Real Capital Solutions' credits include; Vail’s Front Door, Fountain Hills (AZ) Town Center, and Four Corners in Telluride. Urban Neighborhoods and its partners are credited with the Denver Union Station redevelopment project, Larimer Square, and the Lowry Hangar 2 Beer Garden. Moving forward, the Mayor and City Council are touring projects and receiving presentations from the potential development partners. We expect that in early 2016, a development partner will emerge and a contract for the development partnership will be negotiated. Once the development partner is identified, there will be numerous engagement opportunities for continued dialogue with the community as the physical plans are prepared and various programs are developed to identify and secure the Civic Center businesses. Please stay tuned as we work together to develop a project which brings the vision of the 2008 plan to reality. Editor’s note: This is the first in a series of updates on Broomfield’s Civic Center project. Watch future issues for further news and developments.

COLORADO
GIVES DAY Is One of the Most Successful Single-Day Charity Efforts in the Entire Country By Dan Powers
In this season of gratitude and giving, one of the most impactful ways to help others is also one of the easiest: from the comfort of your home, via your computer, tablet or smart phone, you can make a meaningful donation to a worthy organization during the sixth annual Colorado Gives Day.
(3), having an annual budget of at least $50,000, and a few more specifics. “All of the participants have been seriously vetted by Community First Foundation, donors can feel good about any of their choices,” said Kayla. All donations made to the 501(c)(3) charities featured on ColoradoGives.org are tax deductible. One way the excitement around the event will be made visible is when hundreds of individuals representing Colorado’s nonprofits Number of Colorado Gives Day Donations by Year: 108,537 100k 88,571 80k Number of Donations

olorado Gives Day is an annual state-wide celebration with a mission to increase philanthropy in Colorado through online giving. During a 24-hour period starting at 12:00 a.m. on December 8, donations will be accepted at www.ColoradoGives.org for more than 1,800 Colorado non-profits, with matching funds and special prizes adding to the impact and excitement of the day. Kayla Arnesen, Director of Strategic Communications for the Community First Foundation said Colorado Gives Day is one of the most successful efforts in the nation. “Since its inception in 2010 this event has raised more than $83 million for Colorado non-profits,” she said. “Our first year we were hoping to raise $1 million – we actually raised more than $8 million, and we’ve continued to set records in each subsequent year.” Last year $26.2 million was raised in just 24 hours. The event was created by the Community First Foundation in 2010 with the financial support of Colorado-based 1STBank. (This was preceded in 2007 with the creation of the ColoradoGives.org website that actually operates yearround to prompt and accept donations.) “Colorado Gives Day came out of conversations on how to further increase awareness and celebrate gift-giving. We were one of the first in the nation and one of the most successful in terms of funds raised,” said Kayla. You can search for charities by organization name, keyword, cause, city or zip code. You can find information on a non-profit’s mission, programs, budget, leadership team, Board members, history, etc. “It’s a lot of information so that donors can make good decisions,” said Kayla. Search “Broomfield” and you’ll get more than 900 options! will descend on the steps of the Colorado State Capitol in Denver on December 7. Starting at 11:00 a.m. on the Capitol’s West steps - rain, snow or shine - there will be a huge rally to celebrate Colorado’s nonprofits and the great work they do in our communities. 1STBank is offering five prizes worth $1,000 each for a live, random drawing of five nonprofits during the rally; four will be drawn among nonprofits physically present at the rally. One name will be drawn among nonprofits headquartered outside the seven–county Denver metro area. Colorado Gives Day has also attracted some major partners and intriguing competitions to help engage more participation. For example, the Denver Business Journal is calling on all companies to take part in the Colorado Gives Day Corporate Challenge. Participating businesses “challenge” employees to give with a goal of achieving 100 percent participation. Another prompt to get people involved is the $1 Million Incentive Fund, one of the largest in the country. Community First Foundation and 1STBank each contributed $500,000 to create this fund which increases the value of every donation proportionally. In addition, 1STBank will be sponsoring a drawing for nonprofits to win sixteen $5,000 Luck-of-the-Draw Prizes. To qualify for the drawing, a new nonprofit participant must receive a minimum of 30 donations through ColoradoGives.org and returning nonprofits must have an increase in the dollar amount raised over last year. Then there are the “Why Colorado Gives” prizes - 1STBank is offering a random drawing of 15 prizes worth $1,000 each. To qualify to win a prize for their favorite nonprofit, contest participants must post a photo or video to their own Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram page about “why they give” and use the hashtags #WhyColoradoGives and #COGivesDay. Winners will be drawn randomly three times a day from Monday, November 30, through Friday, December 4.
You don’t have to wait until the big event to participate – you can visit www.ColoradoGives. org and schedule a donation now to be withdrawn from your bank account or credit card on December 8 to the charities of your choice. “We want to increase Colorado’s charitable giving, and we hope people find it easy and gratifying to not only support their preferred non-profit, but also find new ones to support,” said Kayla. “There are so many deserving causes, we appreciate everyone’s participation!”

Broomfield FISH
Helps Provide Holiday Meals for Families in Need By Allison Eichner, Broomfield FISH Youth Advisory Board Member
A
s the holidays quickly approach it is important to remember that not all Broomfield families get to have the bountiful celebrations many of us do. Thankfully, the Broomfield community has FISH. FISH’s goal is to provide for citizens that live at or below the poverty line with basic needs like food and personal care items. These needs are no different around the holidays, and FISH recognizes this. In order to make the holiday season more special for their clients, each season FISH organizes two basket stuffing events: one for Thanksgiving and one for Christmas. I was lucky enough to attend the event in November and take part in the entire process. There were about 100 volunteers in attendance and by the end we had packed 500 boxes of food. Each box contained canned and boxed ingredients needed to cook a classic Thanksgiving meal as well as a $10 gift card to either King Soopers or Wal-Mart. Every client of FISH received a Thanksgiving basket on November 18. “This activity is important to the mission of FISH because we give families a bit of hope and comfort during the holiday season!” said Dayna Scott, executive director at FISH, “We also make sure that families don’t go hungry and help meet their basic needs.” As a member of the Youth Advisory Board for FISH I get to volunteer at many events, but this one in particular was special. I was amazed to see the Broomfield community come together in order to help their neighbors in need. The holidays are a time to give to others and be thankful for what you have, and the basket stuffing event helped me experience both of these. Luckily, there is one more event this season to get involved in the process. The Christmas basket stuffing will take place on December 12 at 9:00 a.m. in the gym of the Broomfield United Methodist Church. The boxes from this event will be delivered to FISH’s clients on December 16. For more information on this event, or if you’re interested in volunteering with the

distribution of boxes, contact Sharin Oliver, the volunteer coordinator at FISH, at sharin.oliver@broomfieldfish.org. If you are unable to attend the event, FISH is always in need of donations, both food and monetary. Right now the pantry is most in need of: meat, eggs, peanut butter, canned fruit, baking mixes and personal care items like shampoo, deodorant, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.

BEHIND THE SCENES:
BROOMFIELD’S
Holiday Lights Displays By Dan Powers
We All Love
the bright colorful lights and decorations throughout Broomfield as the holidays approach – in fact we may take for granted they simply are always there every December. In fact it takes a ton of work to wrap the trees, light the buildings, and get the decorations set up around town. Here’s a peek at what it takes to light up Broomfield this month.
30
THE BROOMFIELDER™ DECEMBER 2015
“We
have 2,657 total installed strings of lights, 25 large decorations, and more than 150 trees that get lights,” explained Ryan Jensen, Park Operations Supervisor with the City and County of Broomfield. He’s been working on the annual holiday displays for 20 years, and along with an experienced crew preps, plans, and puts in many hours to get the city bright and festive. The December 4 Tree Lighting Ceremony at the George DiCiero City and County Building is the formal kick-off to the holiday with Mayor Randy Ahrens officially hitting the “on button” while the air is filled with carols as all of Broomfield welcomes the arrival of Santa Claus. By that evening, dozens of city employees have checked and re-checked the decorations so everything goes off without a hitch. “We have 100 strings on that tree, nearly 3,000 lights,” explained Ryan. “We have a remote unit – the Mayor uses a magical switch that he turns while at the podium. Making sure that will work is our biggest responsibility.”

Giving Tree!
And it’s more than just the tree, the preparation includes lights and decorations around the city offices, the library, all around the community pond, and more. “We base all of our installation goals on that December 4 date,” explained Ryan. “We aim for everything to be properly installed and working by then. We’ve had issues with frigid temperatures and bad weather and in the past, so we start our installation process far enough in advance to make sure we have plenty of time to get all our apparatus installed and everything in working order. Because there are hayrides that night around the city center and down around the library, we know people are going to be checking out all the decorations.” In addition to the tree and many civic buildings there are parks and greenbelt spaces that also get the festive treatment. “Those are not part of the ceremony on the 4th, but are still focal points for the community,” he said. There are 32 employees, between regular and seasonal staff, working on the project, and in addition to all the regular materials and equipment that is used, the city also rents a few lift trucks to help. Foreman John Kingsley has been doing this for about 15 years; his focus is on Midway Park. “This is a real high profile area, a lot of people drive by to check out the lights, so we want it to look awesome,” he said. “We have approximately 1,100 strings of lights going up here, with lots of trees. This takes about five full days. We have a good system; it’s the same group of guys who’ve been doing it for ten-plus years.” Foreman Kevin Ewerks added, “It takes longer than people think – we tell them it takes about two weeks to get it all in place throughout the city and they say ‘wow.’ But getting the correct amount of lights on all the trees and around the buildings is a bit of a project.” When it comes to the trees, the lift trucks are crucial – they are much safer and more efficient than ladders. John said he really likes operating the lift: “I listen to the guys’ instructions to move the lift up or down, in or out; we’ve gotten pretty good over the years with how we work together on this.” Something people may not think of is just how brisk it gets up there in the lift trucks. “It can be a slow process when you are going around a tree ten or twelve times, it’s an involved task,” said Ryan. “We have guys on the ground, handing up the lights, catching anything that falls, keeping everything flowing. You get ten or twenty feet off the ground, it can feel a lot colder, especially when there’s wind.” Over the years there have been some changes to their efforts, mostly regarding the scope and the technology. “We used to have seven of us doing this, we have expanded the decorations and lights quite a bit,” said Ryan. “And with LEDs the electricity bill has been significantly reduced – we’re now paying around 10 – 15% of the total previous power bills that we would see with the incandescent lights.” Another somewhat stressful element has been removed: “We used to do the “Griswold” tree lighting [from the movie Christmas Vacation], it was very much an argument as to who would have the responsibility to coordinate plugging in the actual lights in exact coordination with the Mayor’s ceremonial turning on of the switch. Making sure that functioned properly was a big deal. Now we have wireless switches and keys; that’s made our job more comfortable,” said Ryan.

Another benefit of LEDs – you can’t take out the bulbs. New LEDs have the bulb as part of the string itself, they don’t come off, and they’re not glass or easily breakable plastic, so that has really reduced both breakage and vandalism. “Before they could be easily unscrewed and removed, people could go into a park and take them. Now the majority of our troubleshooting has to do with wind moving the lights, maybe checking on shorts in the strands. The upkeep while they’re hanging is just putting them back in place, not really repairs,” said John. “Our biggest issue is the squirrels like the coating on the wire, they love to chew it off to put it in their nest,” said Ryan. "Most of the damage we have is from them, chewing during the day when the lights are off and have no voltage in them.” The lights stay up until the second week of January, then they’re turned off and start to come down – weather permitting. “They’re always easier to come down than put up,” said Kevin. Only ten months until it’s time to bring them out again! TO VIEW THE BROOMFIELDER™ ONLINE VISIT: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

Homemade Gifts Kitchen FROM THE
By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham
If you’re trying to keep both your frenzied shopping as well as your budget under control this holiday season, consider making your own unique, delicious homemade gifts. Homemade gifts, rather than mass-market items, are always appreciated and can be a great project to involve the entire family.
E
very year, your gift list seems to grow – co-workers, boss, spouse’s co-workers and boss, babysitter, book club, neighbors, and on and on. A standard gift card is impersonal and quite frankly looks a little lazy, but a delicious homemade treat is absolutely perfect. Gifts of food and drink are almost universally loved, especially during the holidays, and why not? They can be enjoyed immediately, there are always unexpected guests dropping by to sample your handiwork, and you won’t have to dust it, exchange it for the correct size, or donate it to the thrift store after the holidays. While sweets, such as toffee, fudge, and cookies, are always welcome, contemplate other, more unusual edible gifts, such as hot sauce, flavored salts, granola, infused vinegars or liqueurs, savory shortbreads, or herb-roasted nuts. Your recipients will be sure to appreciate the extra time and effort you devoted to their gift. Take it from a professional chef - always test a recipe first, especially if you’re somewhat of a kitchen novice. If you’ve never made caramel corn before, committing to make ten pounds for your kid’s school party without a dress rehearsal

might not be the best choice. Additionally, always label your gift, especially if it contains allergens like nuts or dairy. Add a little recipe or idea card so the recipient knows what to make with the gift; this is particularly useful for flavored alcohols and liqueurs. Consider shelf life, too: if your item needs to be refrigerated, make sure you mention that to the recipient and write it on the label. If something should be consumed within a certain time span, indicate that as well. If you’re going through all this effort to make incredible gifts, don’t skimp on the packaging; it should demonstrate to the recipient that something amazing is inside. Thrift stores are great sources for inexpensive tins, vintage bottles, interesting boxes, unusual jars and other containers to enclose your handmade treats. Use gorgeous ribbon and personalized gift tags (easily available online) to make your gifts look both handmade and professional. Take some time together as a family and focus on making tasty gifts with love and care; your handmade creations will be remembered long after the cheap Chinese plastic is trucked to the landfill.
Homemade Marshmallows (Adapted from Martha Stewart)
Homemade marshmallows seem complicated and intimidating, but are actually easy (and impressive!) once you’ve mastered the technique. Keep your utensils welloiled to prevent the marshmallows from sticking, and package these as a gift with hot cocoa mix in a festive mug. • • • • • • •
Vegetable oil, for brushing 4 envelopes unflavored gelatine (1 oz. total) 3 cups granulated sugar 1 1/4 cups light corn syrup 1/4 tsp. salt 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
1. Brush a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish with oil. Line with parchment, allowing a 2-inch overhang on the long sides. Brush parchment with oil; set aside. 2. Place granulated sugar, corn syrup, salt, and 3/4 cup water into a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. Cook, without stirring, until mixture registers 230 degrees on a candy thermometer, about 12 minutes. 3. Place 3/4 cup cold water into the bowl of an electric mixer; sprinkle with gelatine. Let soften 5 minutes. Attach bowl with gelatine to standing mixer fitted with whisk attachment. With mixer on low speed, beat hot syrup into gelatine mixture. Gradually raise speed to high; beat until mixture is very stiff, about 12 minutes. Beat in vanilla. Pour into prepared dish, and smooth with an oiled offset spatula. Set aside, uncovered, until firm, about 3 hours. 4. Sift 1 cup confectioners’ sugar onto a large cutting board. Unmold marshmallow onto confectioners’ sugar; remove parchment. Lightly brush a sharp knife with oil, then cut marshmallow into squares, or shapes. Sift remaining 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar into a small bowl, and roll each marshmallow in sugar to coat. Marshmallows can be stored in an airtight container for at least one week.
Salted & Seeded Chocolate Bark (Adapted from Bon Appétit)

1/4 cup raw shelled pumpkin seeds (pepitas) 2 tbsp. hemp seeds 2 tbsp. sesame seeds 1/4 tsp. flaky sea salt 8 oz. good-quality bittersweet chocolate (at least 70% cacao), chopped
1. Heat a dry skillet over medium-high heat. Toast pepitas, stirring occasionally, until pepitas first start to pop, about 1 minute. Pour seeds into a bowl. Toast hemp seeds in same skillet over medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until fragrant and just starting to turn a pale straw gold, about 45 seconds. Add to bowl with pepitas. Toast sesame seeds in same skillet over medium-high heat until fragrant and just starting to turn golden, about 45 seconds. Add to bowl with other seeds. Add salt; toss to combine. 2. Place chocolate in a small heatproof bowl and set over a pan of simmering water. Stir frequently until melted and smooth. Alternatively, place chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at 50% power for 1 minute. Stir; continue cooking in 30-second bursts, stirring after each, until chocolate is melted. 3. Pour melted chocolate onto a parchment paper–lined baking sheet; smooth out into a thin even layer (it will not cover the entire sheet pan). Evenly sprinkle seed mixture over chocolate. Place in freezer for 10 minutes to set. Store airtight in refrigerator; let come to room temperature before eating. TO VIEW THE BROOMFIELDER™ ONLINE VISIT: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

Broomfield Recycling Services
Helps Keep Community Clean Year Round By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS
Though many people think of cleaning out their house and getting rid of junk in the spring, fall and winter is also a great time to clean out unwanted items. Instead of throwing items away, the City of Broomfield offers many recycling services for residents.
F
or consumer recycling, Broomfield has an excellent Recycling Center located at 225 Commerce St. The center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for Broomfield residents. For those who do not have curbside recycling in the neighborhood, the center will take office paper, newspapers, cardboard, and mixed recyclables. The Recycling Center, through a partnership with ARC Thrift stores, also accepts books, both paperback and hardback, any clothing except socks and underwear, clean towels, bedding and fabric, and shoes. A complete list of acceptable items can be found on the City of Broomfield website under Environmental Services. Broomfield also has an oil recycling program. This program runs year round and is located at

This program is only for Broomfield residents and an ID is required for drop off. The drop off is only open and staffed on Saturdays, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Wednesdays, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., year round. The drop off might also be closed due to weather conditions so if it has snowed or rained prior to a drop off day, call ahead to make sure they are open. Only tree branches and shrub branches will be accepted. Trash, sod, grass clippings, or other landscape debris including lumber and fence materials are not accepted and absolutely no wire, nails, or metal of any kind is allowed. Branches more than 18 inches in diameter must be cut into 4-foot lengths. After dropping off your tree limbs, you are welcome to pick up some free mulch that is available year round. THE BROOMFIELDER™ DECEMBER 2015
Charitable Giving By Jennifer Kerr, President and CEO, Broomfield Chamber of Commerce
B
roomfield is a wonderful and giving community. When there is a need the Broomfield community steps up. That was very apparent at two events I attended last month. The Heroes of A Precious Child Luncheon and the Broomfield FISH Harvest of Hope Luncheon. We have a community of people willing and able to give of their time and resources to strengthen our community by giving our neighbors a helping hand. Yes, Broomfield is very charitable and giving. However, a recurring theme at both events was even more valuable than the food, clothing, assistance, and support people received. Those who shared their real life stories expressed how they were treated by the employees and volunteers at both organizations. They were treated with respect and without judgment. Facing challenging times and having their hearts and souls tested, they made the courageous decision to reach out for help and received more than they ever imagined. We should be proud that these organizations and others make such a huge impact on our community. It’s also important to remember that any of

us could be in a position where we need help at any time. Life is unpredictable and difficult, sometimes at the same time. Some of the stories were overwhelming just to hear, and these were the lives of our neighbors; neighbors that just wanted to get back on their feet and move forward. You’ve heard people say that you should never judge others and that you don’t know the battle people are facing in their daily lives. Let’s put the focus on what we can do for others and how we can be there for others. And if you are looking for a way to start, become a volunteer at A Precious Child or Broomfield FISH or find other ways to give back to your community. Donate your time or make a financial donation. Just become a part of the solution any way you can. Charitable giving comes in many forms and it starts with each one of us. Let’s make the holidays a time of joy for all of our neighbors.
