Home Holidays
for the
E
ach day when I am driving home from work and cross over 120th Ave. into Broomfield, a sense of calm begins to wash over me. The worries of the day begin to fade and while I still have a few miles to travel to reach my doorstep, I am home. With every corner and every familiar tree that I pass, I am home. For many, sanctuary is found within the walls of a house, for me it is within an entire community. It is the trails that I jog on, the stores where I shop, my sister’s house, and my mother’s house. It is the church that I attend and the organizations that I try to support, and the friends and neighbors I have known for years and years. I am in the place where my husband and I grew up and consciously decided to stay and raise our family. It is our home. In the past year, Broomfield has shown up on several “lists” of the best community or the best city for this or that. I don’t know about you, but when this has happened, I first feel pride and think how great it is! Which is immediately followed by thinking, “Oh no! I hope no one else finds out.” Most recently Broomfield was named the best city in the country by an organization called 24/7 Wall St., with prominent coverage in USA Today. Best city to live in, in the United States. Seems true, yet a bit surreal. Let’s not tell anyone ok? I’ve written before in this space about living here all my life and the pride I feel in Broomfield. There are many others who feel the same way, and more and more who are turning their eyes to our not-so-little-anymore hometown and noting that there is something special here. I realize that most people probably feel this way about their hometown, wherever it might be, but this best place belongs to us. In this issue you will find details on many wonderful local events to celebrate the holiday season, a special gift book feature put together by our library staff at Broomfield’s Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library, and information on giving in our state. Enjoy your Broomfield holiday. On behalf of the entire team at the Broomfielder, we wish you a joyous season.

Broomfield’s favorite tanning salon, Tan N Tone, will soon be helping its customers achieve a year-round, sun-kissed glow in a new and improved, spacious location at 120th and Sheridan.

Cooking Instructions: 1. Spray inside of 6-quart slow cooker with no stick cooking spray. For the Cake, mix all ingredients in large bowl. Pour into greased slow cooker. Place towel over slow cooker and cover with lid. 2. Cook 3 1/2 hours on low or until cake is almost set. 3. Meanwhile, for the Caramel Sauce, cook and stir all ingredients in small saucepan on medium-high heat 5 minutes or until sauce is smooth. 4. Carefully remove slow cooker insert and place on wire rack. Pour 1/2 of the Caramel Sauce over the cake. Let stand 10 to 15 minutes to cool slightly. Serve cake with remaining sauce and ice cream or whipped cream, if desired. *Substitution: Use 1 cup chopped candy bars in place of the chocolate chips.

Music always plays an important role in setting the holiday mood, and Broomfield’s annual tree-lighting ceremony, held each year at the George DiCiero City and County Building, certainly rises to the occasion. From talented local choruses to children’s caroling groups to Suzuki violin students performing beautiful versions of holiday classics, this event will certainly get you and your family into the Christmas spirit.

lthough the tradition seems to be losing steam, many of us remember caroling groups from our childhood. Family and friends would gather to entertain neighbors with holiday songs and most likely be invited in for hot drinks and delicious food. We now often encounter groups of carolers gathered in shopping centers, office parties or other holiday events, but it’s rare to see a group roaming our modern housing developments. Carols, a word which literally translates as “a song or dance of praise or joy,” used to be sung year-round and were never directly affiliated with winter holidays, but only the tradition of singing at Christmas has survived. As

Christmas falls near the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, this was an important time to both reflect on the year gone and to celebrate the future. Brightening these dark days with a little music evolved into our modern tradition of singing Christmas carols, whether at church or on walks around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, caroling developed as an oral tradition passed down from generation to generation, so few accurate historical records remain. While the tradition of traveling around singing good health wishes to neighbors is thought to have originated in the fifteenth century, caroling lost its popularity for many hundreds of years; the vast majority

In addition to the gorgeous holiday music, Broomfield’s tree-lighting ceremony also includes a visit from Santa, sure to excite little ones! In previous years, Santa has arrived via “magical helicopter;” while organizers are mum on this year’s arrival plans, you can be sure they have special surprises in store to thrill the kid in all of us. As in previous years, Broomfield Mayor Randy Ahrens will officially light the city’s tree; the trees in Community Park will also be beautifully decorated for the occasion. Weather-permitting, fun family hayrides will be offered too. Whether you’ve been part of this holiday tradition every year or you’re a new Broomfield resident, you won’t want to miss the ceremony at the George DiCiero City and County Building. If you’re a fan of holiday events like the Parade of Lights downtown, this local event allows you to bring your family for a dose of holiday spirit without the hassle, traffic, and huge crowds found elsewhere. This year, the ceremony will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 2. Director of Strategic Communications Kayla Arnesen said Colorado Gives Day is one of the most successful in the nation. “Since its inception in 2010 this event has raised over $111 million for Colorado non-profits,” she said. “People can search for non-profits with our theme ‘Give Where You Live’ – you can find Broomfield-focused charities and support the nonprofits helping to make your community a better place to live.”

This year the effort has expanded to also reach the next generation of philanthropists: KidsforColoradoGives.org is a new companion website offering a more kid-oriented design and big, colorful graphics easily showing visitors topics kids are likely to find of interest like animals, helping people, food, art, and more. There are videos for kids with topics like “What is a non-profit?” and “Why do non-profits need donations?” Kayla said generating an appreciation for giving among children is a key motivation for this new portal. Lt. Governor Donna Lynne is serving as a Kids for ColoradoGives co-ambassador and said the site is a great place to introduce your children and grandchildren to the joy of charitable giving. “In this friendly and welcoming space, good things begin. Kids connect with Colorado nonprofits and learn
about the important work they do to make our lives better. We believe it has the power to inspire a lifetime of charitable giving.” One powerful and inspiring non-profit story is that of 16-year-old co-ambassador Allison Winn – in 2010 Alli founded The Stink Bug Project, a program of Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation. The nonprofit pairs trained dogs from the Prison Trained K-9 Program at Colorado Correctional Industries with families who have a seriously ill child. One of the local participating nonprofits is Senior Resources of Broomfield. SRB is particularly focused on the nutritional, medical, and social needs of our senior population and strives to support this group in a manner that not only fulfills these needs but also allows seniors to live independently as long as possible. Their philanthropic efforts support Meals on Wheels; transportation services; dental, vision, and hearing needs; in-home services; and public advocacy for seniors at the state and local levels. “Probably our most impactful programs involve emergency medical expenses,” said Board President Barbara Reed. “Most of the people coming to us for help are on Medicaid, with funds already extremely limited. If they get an unexpected expense from dental surgery, vision problems or hearing aids, the cost can just knock the socks off folks when they get a diagnosis.” With the projected increase in seniors in Broomfield, SRB knows their program demands are growing “exponentially,” said Barbara. “We are the provider of last resort for many people.”

WINTER ACTIVITIES

We have had an incredibly mild winter thus far with a very mild November, therefore it might be hard to think about fun outside snow activities, but the snow will be here soon enough!
SKATING Ice skating is a fun family winter activity. Families can skate in historic downtown Louisville at the Steinbaugh Pavilion on Front Street or in Boulder at the Teahouse Plaza on 13th Street. These outdoor rinks are open from November through February. The outdoor rinks are open on holidays, with extended hours during winter school break and offer group rates and private parties. If you would still like to skate but the weather is not cooperating, The Ice Centre at the Promenade in Westminster has a great indoor rink.
SLEDDING There are plenty of great sledding spots in and around Broomfield. Broomfield Commons Park at 13221 Sheridan has a great hill located next to the Championship field. The hill is not very long but allows for plenty of sledders and is a great place for beginners or younger sledders. The Commons also has ample parking. At the soccer fields next to Legacy High School you will find a fairly short and steep hill that is quite wide to allow for lots of sledders. In Lafayette, Autumn Ash Park, off North 111th Street at Beacon Hill and Lucerne drive also has a nice hill for family sledding with young children.

LOCAL RECREATION If the weather is just too frightful to play outside, Broomfield is home to plenty of great indoor entertainment options including physical activities, creative arts, and educational activities. The Paul Derda Recreation Center offers a free indoor playground for young children. For a small fee the recreation center also has pools, basketball, gymnastics, and an indoor running track. A variety of classes are also offered at the recreation center for newborns up to teenagers. These classes include music and dance classes and day outings for teens. The recreation center also offers a variety of activities during school breaks.

MOVEMENT & CREATIVITY
Indoor play areas such as the indoor trampoline parks and venues such as Monkey Business, located in Orchard Town Center, are other fun place for kids to burn some energy on cold days. These play areas feature inflatable obstacle courses, slides, bouncers, toddler and infant areas, jungle gyms, play structures and more. Many offer amenities where parents can relax with a cup of coffee or a smoothie from the snack bar.
If you are looking for more of an artistic activity for kids there are several local options. Whimsy Paint and Sip has a kids club for kids ages 7-15. A professional artist guides the group through the same piece of art in a fun atmosphere. For the kids club, a kid-friendly painting is selected however, you do not have to paint what is scheduled, “You can paint anything your imagination can think of!” Color Me Mine is another great place for kids to explore their artistic side with pottery. Kids can select an unpainted piece of pottery varying from animals to plates or cups to picture frames. The kids then get to paint their piece and the studio will then fire it for a take home masterpiece. The Butterfly Pavilion is also a great place in Broomfield’s backyard that combines science education with hands-on fun to teach visitors about invertebrates, science, and conservation. They offer special $5 days, group discounts, and visiting on your birthday for only $1. The WOW or World of Wonder Museum is located just outside of Broomfield in Lafayette. This museum provides educational and interactive exhibits and programs for all children. They provide drop-in science programs for children as young as 18 months and hands-on science education for older children.
Winter in Colorado is mainly known for incredible skiing, but if you are not able to get up to the mountains or feel like making the trek up I-70, there are plenty of fun outdoor and indoor activities close by to keep the whole family entertained.

Ruth Roberts Connector Trail Project Recognized for Excellent Use of Grant Funds By Kristen Beckman
The Colorado Lottery presented a Starburst Award to the City and County of Broomfield on Nov. 1, recognizing excellent use of lottery proceeds on the Ruth Roberts Connector Trail project.
B
roomfield received $45,000 in proceeds through the Colorado Lottery’s Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) program for the project, which had an overall cost of about $210,000. The 0.9 mile, 8-footwide crusher fines trail connects the Rock Creek Trail with the Lake Link Trail and includes a 47-foot pedestrian bridge. “You often think of trails going next to creeks and streams and into beautiful places, but sometimes a trail needs to have a purpose and that’s what this trail does,” said Colin Waters, community relations specialist with the Colorado Lottery. “It connects two larger trails and becomes part of a bigger network of trails. It has seen tremendous use since it opened, and it helps people enjoy the outdoors and the whole trail system as one.” The trail runs through the Ruth Roberts Open Space, which is owned by Boulder County and was purchased in part with funds from Broomfield. Boulder and Broomfield worked together on the trail project. “One thing we know is when people use trails crossing the various jurisdictional lines, they may notice that and they may not,” said Kristan Pritz, director of Open Space and Trails for the City and County of Broomfield. “Primarily what they are focused on is enjoying their trail experience and getting to wherever they are trying to go, whether it’s another open space property or a restaurant in our community. We like to emphasize that interconnections with other communities are really valuable.”

Construction planning for the project began in 2012 after Broomfield and Boulder applied for and received the GOCO grant, said Pritz. “That’s a connection our citizens had indicated an interest in having for a significant amount of time and we were finally able to pull together the money
and the timing with the two governmental groups to get it done,” said Pritz. Grant money is instrumental in helping Broomfield fund trails and open space projects, said Pritz. During the 2016 fiscal year, the lottery returned a record-high $143.5 million in proceeds to beneficiaries across the state. “That extra grant money is really helpful in making our taxpayers’ money go further,” said Pritz. In addition to cash, the joint effort on the trail included in-kind donations and volunteer work provided by the Boulder County Youth Corps. Once the project was complete, Broomfield submitted it for consideration for a Starburst Award. “We get applications for the award every summer and start the process of judging, sorting and picking the ones that
stand out,” said Waters. “We are looking for projects that have a long-lasting impact on the community. A $10,000 project can have just as much of an impact as a $10 million project.” The projects selected to receive Starburst Awards this year ranged from $28,255 to $4.9 million in lottery funds. “This was a great year for the Starburst award,” said Waters, who noted 22 projects received Starburst Awards this year representing a total of $14.3 million in lottery proceeds. “That’s a really high mark. I don’t think there’s been that much money in a Starburst cycle before. We had a really great year with everything from skate parks to a major 64-acre park, to splash pads and bike parks.” Broomfield was pleased to be one of the 22 Starburst Award winners this year. “It’s a very positive award to receive because it celebrates collaboration, efficient use of public resources and money, and meeting community needs, all in a really excellent way,” said Pritz. “We’re really pleased that that was recognized and we also want to recognize our partners, Boulder County Parks and Open Space. Collaboration is really a valuable thing, financially and just in doing things as efficiently as possible to meet community needs.” Broomfield has received five GOCO grants, totaling $506,000, as well as $10.7 million in proceeds from the Conservation Trust Fund. In addition to the Ruth Roberts Connector Trail project, Broomfield has received GOCO grants for the Tom Frost Nature Education and Picnic Pavilion, Northmoor Park improvements, Highway 287 and Miramonte Open Space Buffer, and Rock Creek Farm.

roomfield has a newly-approved vision for the community’s future, an inspiring guiding set of principles and goals ranging from housing and open space to industry, transportation, schools, and technological advances, just coming to the forefront. Last month the Broomfield Comprehensive Plan Update process culminated in approval by the City Council of one of the most important public brainstorming efforts in the city’s history. Last updated formally in 2005, Broomfield’s Comprehensive Plan is a long-term policy document with guiding visions and strategies relating to new development, redevelopment, city programs, and services. On November 1, city staff, members of the 18-person citizen task force, professional consultants and interested citizens provided comments, details, and encouragement in advance of the formal vote to approve the Plan.

Broomfield’s Director of Community Development Dave Shimmeman gave some background to this visioning effort: the 2005 Comp Plan had been updated in various increments over the years through neighborhood plans, sub-area plans, and urban renewal plans. Also, in 2011 the City Council did a sustainability plan which influenced the Comp Plan with issues like water conservation, open space, energy efficiency, and solid waste management. Over the last 15 months, through dozens of task force meetings, subgroup meetings, public meetings including City Council, and online and written comments, the Plan coalesced through numerous drafts. “There were several public outreach events, and many members of Council attended events and comments were included in the draft document before this evening,” said Dave.

This 2016 update “recognizes and addresses the various changes that have affected our community… and takes into account City Council-identified focus areas and overarching themes” that have been consistently reiterated as priorities shaping Broomfield. Those themes include:
• Changing demographics and growth projections, and the resulting demands placed on City and County government and the community over the next decade; • Transitioning from a growth-oriented community to a community focused on maintaining and improving existing facilities and neighborhoods while continuing to accommodate anticipated growth; • Enhancing multimodal transportation throughout the community; and • The impact of technology, the information it provides, and how this information affects how residents live, work, play, and move.
The final approved document’s Executive Summary provides a thoughtful overview of key focus areas such as transportation, housing, land use, economic development, social services, open space, parks, and trails, the 120th corridor and other redevelopment opportunities, and historic preservation. Keeping the 40% open lands goal was a particular highlight. More than just a big list of nice ideas for what could be, the Comp Plan has legal weight: “This is also a regulatory document that provides a framework for making other land use and policy decisions in the future,” said Dave. While allowing for the reality and nuances that private property will change with various property owners’ needs, the Comprehensive Plan “provides a framework for making responsible decisions that reflect the desires of the community and encourage continuity and compatibility among neighborhoods. All land use applications should be reviewed not only for conformance with specific zoning requirements but also for consistency with the direction and guidance provided by the Comprehensive Plan.” To that point, there are ten topical elements in the Plan, which identify goals for the given topic element, along with broad policies and specific action steps to accomplish the goals.

Councilwoman Elizabeth Law-Evens called the process “a massive amount of work” and she complimented Task Force Chairman Tom Silvers for keeping meetings “on time and on track – that is a skill and I appreciate it,” she said. “Also the Level of Service idea may be the most important idea I heard for open space and trails acquisition and planning. For a long time we’ve had the 40% open lands goal and we now have a tool to look at acquisition with the idea of making sure all of our residents are served by open space.” “I’ve been on past Comprehensive Plan committees and I think it’s always amazing when you get people together and all the ideas that come out,” said Mayor Randy Ahrens. “I’d have to say this is the best yet.”
