FROM THE

Wishing You the

Peace of the Season Peace: • • • • •

A state of tranquility or quiet A state of security or order within a community provided for by law or custom Freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions Harmony in personal relations A state or period of mutual concord between governments

The above definitions from Webster’s are clear, but what does the traditional Christmas greeting actually look like in our lives?

How About (in parallel to the list above): • • • • •

Disconnecting from digital distractions Reaching out to a neighbor with a gesture of kindness Forgiving and loving ourselves Extending an olive branch to a friend of family member Setting politics aside – even for just one day.

2017 has sure been heavy at times. From deep discord on the national political scene, to intense political debate right here in our own hometown, it feels like a deep breath is in order. If you need more vivid examples of peace in action, just look to the real-life angels that we have featured in this issue on pages 20-22. We asked you to share a few words about quiet but committed family members, friends, and neighbors who simply make the world a better place for others. The group of folks you told us about is quite inspirational! Thank you to everyone who took the time to recognize someone special.

No Place like Home for the Holidays... If you are enjoying the holiday season at home in Broomfield, there are dozens of opportunities to catch the spirit. This issue is filled with information on local music and entertainment events, as well as opportunities to worship and lend a hand to the less fortunate. It is an honor for us to spread the word about the many ways to get involved in our wonderful community – especially at this time of year. As we close out another year, on behalf of the staff of The Broomfielder™ magazine, thank you for you continued support and thank you for reading.

Merry Christmas,

Tina Eichner 6

COLORADO GIVES DAY Harnesses Collective Giving Spirit of Our State By Dan Powers

C

olorado Gives Day is Friday, December 5, and as this season of gratitude and giving gets started, you can support life-changing, world-shaping, incredibly inspiring projects with ease! With a website, mobile platform, and more than 2,000 charities to choose from, it is easy to make a meaningful donation and join thousands of people around the world supporting Colorado’s non-profit community. Created by the Community First Foundation, this annual state-wide celebration has a mission to celebrate and increase philanthropy in Colorado through online giving. More than $200 million has been raised for Colorado nonprofits through www.ColoradoGives.org since 2007. During a 24-hour period starting at 12:00 a.m. on December 5, donations will be accepted at www.ColoradoGives.org for more than 2,000 Colorado non-profits, with matching funds and special prizes adding to the impact and excitement of the day. Director of Strategic Communications Kayla Arnesen said Colorado Gives Day is one of the most successful in the nation. “On December 6, 2016, $33.8 million was donated to 2,111 nonprofits in just 24 hours. Since we started in 2010 this event has raised over $145 million for Colorado non-profits,” she noted. At ColoradoGives.org you can search by keyword, zip code, county, region, and causes such as the arts, science, civil rights, social justice, and dozens more. (A search on Broomfield alone reveals more than 1,300 options.) Kayla points out a favorite feature of regular contributors is how easily you can schedule your donations on Colorado Gives Day in advance. “You don’t have to wait until the big event to participate – visit www.ColoradoGives.org and you can schedule a donation to be withdrawn from your bank account or credit card on December 5 to the charities of your choice,” she said. To make things easy for return visits to the site, you can create a free donor account which lets you view a history of your donations, create a “Favorites” list, set up and

14

THE BROOMFIELDER™ DECEMBER 2017

manage recurring donations, keep track of Giving eCards and even create Fundraising Pages for your favorite nonprofits. For extra motivation, the Community First Foundation and 1STBank each have contributed $500,000 to create a $1 Million Incentive Fund, one of the largest in the country. Each donation received during the 24-hour period of December 5 will receive a proportionate share of the $1 Million Incentive Fund. Through this effort you may learn of opportunities for further volunteerism and how to visit or otherwise engage in the activities of local non-profits. The spirit of the season is sure to be enriched by participating in Colorado Gives Day.

Find out all the details and participate via www.ColoradoGives.org or call 720-898-5900. Sign up for the Community First Foundation’s online newsletter that brings to life the many ways they “collaborate to power community.”

Fibroid Facts

And How Advanced Procedures Can Help By Christine Abair, MD

oes it seem many of the women you know are coping with or concerned about uterine fibroids? The fact is, most women in the United States develop these benign tumors during their lifetime. While some are unaware of their presence and report no symptoms, others experience considerable discomfort. Over time, fibroids can significantly impact a woman’s life choices and overall health.

• What are the symptoms? Among the most common are heavy or longer menstrual periods, pelvic pressure or pain, bladder or bowel issues, and pain in the lower back or legs. Fibroids are a special concern for women hoping to have children, as these tumors can increase the risk of infertility, premature labor, and miscarriage. • How are they diagnosed? Fibroids are often found during routine gynecological exams, as they can make the uterus seem larger than normal. Ultrasound or other imagery may be used to confirm their presence. • How are they treated? Medical and surgical treatment options are available, depending upon the individual’s needs and goals. When surgery is necessary, minimally invasive procedures often achieve the same treatment goals with less pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times. For women with active lifestyles and family responsibilities, these are important advantages. The best decisions on fibroid treatment begin when a woman can talk confidentially and confidently with her doctor. If she finds a surgical procedure is needed for the lifestyle she wants, knowing that both the physician and the facility are highly rated for quality care adds important peace of mind.

• What is a uterine fibroid? These non-cancerous tumors are made of the same smooth-muscle tissue as the uterine wall or myometrium, but are much denser. Usually round they can be quite small or several inches in diameter. They can appear as individual tumors or in clusters, and can grow inside or outside the uterus.

Recognizing

Angels in Broomfield This Holiday Season

In the October and November issues we asked readers to share a few words about a special person who... selflessly gives to the community... is committed to a cause or organization... helps others in the neighborhood... simply makes their own corner of the world a better place, or... inspires with their generosity of time, treasure or talent. We were looking for those quiet, unsung local angels who embody giving and deserve a round of thanks. 20

THE BROOMFIELDER™ DECEMBER 2017

Nikki Price Our daughter-in-law Nikki Price, in spite of her demanding job, is loving and giving to her family, community, neighbors, and church. She does all she can whenever the opportunity arises. She is a wonderful mom and wife. She is a loving, special person. A beauty inside and out. ~ Nominated by Carolyn M. Thomas

Libby Vanzant Our angel is truly and angel. Libby Vanzant passed away at the age of 31 on July 28, 2017. During her short life she inspired her 3 children to always reach for the stars. Her commitment to her children and her husband of 11 years (they were high school sweethearts) came through during her cancer treatments. She always had time for others, finished her Master’s Degree, and taught her family and friends to better themselves while battling Leukemia for 18 months. ~ Nominated by Karen Vanzant

Janice Charles Janice Charles is an angel. I look outside and she’s shoveling snow from my porch! She’s just always there for her neighbors, even before we ask for help. She has cared for the elderly and sick, driven them to appointments, worked on the ambulance, and organized ‘community collections’ to donate to the needy. Once I texted her at midnight because my husband almost fainted, and she was at my house in two minutes flat with her first aid bag! If she doesn’t qualify for your angel, she’s definitely one of mine. ~ Nominated by Suzy Cohen

Dave Fretz Dave Fretz has been a Broomfield resident for more than 50 years. Despite the loss of our Mom this past year, Dave always thinks ahead in helping OTHERS. He’s at our Dad’s home daily taking care of maintenance, groceries or just to keep him company. He’s has also been known to mow a lawn that’s not his, help a neighbor install safety equipment, lend an ear to a friend or save a stranger from a devastating truck explosion. Best of all, he became the kindest nurse and caregiver our Mom could have ever asked for. “To know him is to love him!” ~ Nominated by Gail Loveland

Francine Purdom Nearly 10 years ago, Francine Purdom and her mother, “Queen Jean,” began a line dance class in our Anthem Ranch neighborhood. She donates her time and talent to encourage seniors to dance. All of the nearly 150 club members love her energy, enthusiasm, and kind spirit in making exercise fun and beneficial. She certainly is an Anthem Ranch unsung angel! ~ Nominated by Wendy Anderson Continued on Page 22 To view The Broomfielder™ online visit: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

James and Michelle Bettis James and Michelle Bettis own 3W Races, a local race company that operates under the motto “do what you can, when you can, where you are.” Each 3W-owned event includes a food drive benefiting a local charity partner. In the past 6 years 3W Races has hosted more than 300 food drives! ~ Nominated by Sarah Hudnall

Sue Barnett Sue Barnett (Mrs. B) is the most generous and kind woman I know. As a retired teacher and speech language pathologist, she volunteers in classrooms for children with disabilities and has become a mentor for many teachers over the years. Willing to do whatever we need anytime we need her, she is our angel! ~ Nominated by Heather Hennings

Lori Isadori Lori Isadori is the most compassionate and carrying individual I know. No matter who she encounters at her gym, in our neighborhood, her church, or our grocery store she can sense those in need and gives to them unconditionally through a hug, advice, or small gesture. She has the most positive and loving outlook on life and simply being in her presence makes me want to become a better individual. ~ Nominated by Paige Dungan

22

THE BROOMFIELDER™ DECEMBER 2017

Char Grieshaber For the past six years Char Grieshaber has been the inspiration and the driving force in the annual “Can Up” at Anthem Ranch. Char has overseen the collection of more than $25,000 in food which is then given to Sister Carmen and FISH to serve deserving families. ~ Nominated by Gary Sherrer

Barb Jesik Broomfield FISH nominates Barb Jesik for The Broomfielder Angel award. Barb exhibits dedication, kindness, and compassion when volunteering three times each week for FISH. Those who come for help may be apprehensive, but Barb puts them immediately at ease with her empathetic nature, warm smile, and sense of humor. ~ Nominated by Dayna Scott

Thank you to everyone who shared appreciation for a special friend and thank you to our Angels! You make Broomfield a better place for all of us!

Themed

Christmas Stockings Sure to Delight By Kristen Beckman

On Christmas morning, after Santa’s gifts under the tree have all been opened, one question remains. Will there be a lump of coal or a sweet treat in your stocking? If you are tasked with filling a stocking for someone special in your life this holiday season, a themed stocking can help you brighten your loved one’s holiday with useful and fun accessories and tools they can use the whole year through. Consider one of the following stocking theme ideas, or create one of your own stocking themes to fit your loved one’s personality.

24

THE BROOMFIELDER™ DECEMBER 2017

Fa la la la Latte

For the coffee lover in your life, assemble a coffee-themed stocking sure to be warmly welcomed. The staple of the coffee-lover’s stocking should be coffee or coffee beans, especially seasonal blends. Flavored syrups or creamers add holiday flavor to the stocking — think peppermint or hazelnut varieties. A new mug or lidded travel cup will allow the recipient to sip his or her latte in style or on the go. Small accessories, like measuring spoons or a travel-size French press will ensure a perfect cup. Coffee flavored candy or coffee-scented candles keep the java theme going. Top the stocking off with a gift card to a local coffee shop.

Deck the Balls

Sports enthusiasts will be fans of stockings filled with gear representing their favorite sports team or equipment they can use for their own athletic pursuits. Sports cards or miniature memorabilia, especially the autographed variety, are a winning stocking stuffer. Ornaments or accessories (key chain, bottle opener, jewelry) depicting the recipient’s favorite sports team logo or colors are sure to please. Fill out the stocking with favorite stadium snacks, like Cracker Jacks or peanuts. Top the stocking off with tickets to see the recipient’s favorite team play.

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree

Stocking stuffers offer an opportunity to help the music lover in your life replenish their essential musical accessories and add to their library of favorite hits. A spare pair of earbuds are always welcome, or include a wireless speaker in your recipient’s stocking. Help your favorite music lover jam to their tunes while getting ready for their day with a shower speaker. A photo box or diary to store ticket stubs allows concert fans to remember their favorite events. Wrap items in sheet music for an extra musical touch, and top the stocking off with a gift card so they can add new tunes to their music library or tickets to their favorite concert.

A Christmas Carol

Create a literary stocking to allow the book lover in your life to relax and enjoy some quiet reading time. A bookmark to hold their place and a reading light that attaches to glasses, clips to the book or fits around the reader’s neck will make your recipient’s reading time enjoyable. A personalized “This book belongs to” stamp with your recipient’s name will allow them to loan out their books with reassurance they will be returned. Top the stocking off with a gift certificate to a book store or subscription to an audio book site so your recipient can enjoy new titles throughout the year.

Joy to the World

For globetrotting recipients who love to travel, fill a stocking with items and accessories that will make their adventures comfortable. A personalized luggage tag will help ensure their items make it to their destination with them. A travel adapter will allow them to operate their devices wherever they go. Ear plugs, a sleep mask, and a neck pillow will make their journeys comfortable and quiet. A portable cell phone charger will ensure they are always in touch no matter where they roam. Wrapping items in maps will add to the wanderlust theme of the stocking.

Sugar Plums Dancing

Cooking enthusiasts will love stockings filled with items to help them create culinary masterpieces. A variety of spices, unique sauces, jams, and mixes will provide ingredients that will inspire the foodie in your life. Fill the stocking out with new tools for their kitchen, including spatulas, mixing spoons, and measuring cups. Top the stocking off with a gift certificate to a favorite restaurant or a new establishment the recipient has always wanted to try. To view The Broomfielder™ online visit: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

Holiday Candies

for Sharing & Giving By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham

The holidays are the perfect time to whip up delicious homemade gifts, but candy making can be tricky and temperamental – especially at our altitude. These simple, no-bake candy recipes, packaged in lovely containers with festive ribbon, will provide easy gifts you’ll be proud to give.

Classic Foolproof Fudge (Adapted from Eagle Brand) • • • • •

3 cups (18 oz.) semisweet chocolate chips Pinch of kosher salt 1 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk 1/2 to 1 cup chopped nuts 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

Line an 8-inch square pan with foil, extending liner over edges of pan. Place chocolate chips, salt and milk in heavy saucepan. Melt very gently over low heat, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat; stir in nuts and vanilla. Spread evenly into prepared pan and chill 2 hours or until firm. Remove from pan by lifting edges of foil and cut into squares.

26

THE BROOMFIELDER™ DECEMBER 2017

Peppermint Bark (Adapted from Epicurious) • • • •

12 oz. good-quality semisweet chocolate, chopped 1 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract 1 lb. good-quality white chocolate, chopped About 20 hard peppermint candies, crushed

1. Line a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with aluminum foil. Put all but 3/4 cup of semisweet chocolate in heatproof bowl. Set bowl over pan of steaming water (do not let bowl touch water) and stir until one-third of chocolate is melted. Remove bowl from pan; keep steaming water over low heat. Gradually stir reserved 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate into bowl, a few pieces at a time, until all chocolate is melted. Return bowl to pan, 5 to 10 seconds at a time, to help melt chocolate, if needed. Do not rush this step; it may take up to 10 minutes to thoroughly melt chocolate.

Citrus White Chocolate Truffles (Adapted from The New York Times) • • • • • •

12 oz. good-quality white chocolate, chopped 4 tbsp. unsalted butter, diced 6 tbsp. cold heavy cream 2 tbsp. Grand Marnier Cocoa powder, for dusting Orange zest, for garnish

1. Combine chocolate and butter in a large heatproof bowl; place over a pot of barely simmering water (do not let bowl touch water). Stir constantly until chocolate and butter are melted; mixture will look grainy.

2. Wipe off any moisture from bottom of bowl. Stir 3/4 tsp. peppermint extract into chocolate; quickly pour into prepared dish and spread in an even layer. Firmly tap dish against counter to remove any air bubbles. Set aside at room temperature until almost set, about 10 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, put all but 1 cup of white chocolate in separate large heatproof bowl. Repeat melting process over steaming water; dry off bottom of bowl. Stir in remaining 3/4 tsp. extract; pour over semisweet chocolate in pan and spread in an even layer. Sprinkle immediately with crushed candies, gently pressing into chocolate. Set aside at room temperature until firm, about 1 hour. Lift bark out of pan using foil and break into pieces. Store in airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

2. Remove bowl from water and thoroughly stir in cream one tablespoon at a time until smooth. Press plastic wrap directly against top of mixture and refrigerate for one hour. 3. Scrape mixture into bowl of electric mixer. Beat on medium speed for 1 minute, then add liqueur in a slow, steady stream and continue beating until mixture lightens in color and texture, 15 to 30 seconds. Do not overbeat. 4. Scrape mixture into pastry bag; pipe out 3/4-inch spheres onto pan lined with parchment paper. Refrigerate until firm, about one hour. Roll each truffle between palms of hands to make completely round. If mixture gets too soft to roll, chill for a few minutes until firm. Roll in sifted cocoa powder and garnish with orange zest. Store in refrigerator up to one week. To view The Broomfielder™ online visit: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

Plans Migration to Broomfield By Kristen Beckman

In just a few years, North Park residents will get thousands of new neighbors — of the invertebrate variety — when the Butterfly Pavilion moves to a planned new state-of-the-art facility in Broomfield. Scheduled to open in 2021, the $33 million facility located at I-25 and Highway 7 is expected to be 60,000 square feet and will transform the current operation, which is home to more than 1,600 butterflies and thousands of other creatures including a tarantula named Rosie, into an accredited invertebrate zoo and research center that is focused on environmental conservation. The Butterfly Pavilion and its affiliate Center for Invertebrate Research and Conservation (CIRC) will become a global hub for invertebrate knowledge, conservation, inspiration, and connection, the organization said.

28

THE BROOMFIELDER™ DECEMBER 2017

“B

utterfly Pavilion is launching this expansion to confront and solve global challenges in environmental conservation today and in the future,” said Butterfly Pavilion President and CEO Patrick Tennyson, of the project which will double the facility’s current footprint. “While education continues to be the foundation of who and what we are, establishing a facility for science and conservation will allow Butterfly Pavilion to lead the finest research, restoration, reintroduction, and reestablishment of invertebrate species and their habitats worldwide — right here from Colorado.” The project is part of a plan for 900 acres in the North Park neighborhood that has been under development for several years. In 2011, an agreement for the development of the land included a provision to work to develop a Science and Technology park in the area, including a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) center within North Park for use by the Adams 12 Five Star School District, and other potential shared uses with the city for facilities such as library, recreation, education, workforce, administrative, and other functions. The Broomfield City Council considered a plan to provide $7 million for the project, including $2 million from the Broomfield Asset Protection and Development Fund, which was created to provide resources to fund catalytic projects in the community, and $5 million from the Broomfield Building Replacement Fund, which was created to fund new construction and major upgrades of city and county facilities. The land for the project, which will be donated by real estate developer McWhinney, is valued at $4 million. The council discussed the project at a study session in May and unanimously approved the plan in September. “This partnership presents an incredible opportunity for both Butterfly Pavilion and the City and County of Broomfield,” said Randy Ahrens, mayor of Broomfield. “When we learned of the global impact Butterfly Pavilion was having from a research and conservation standpoint, we saw it as another amazing

reason to live in Broomfield. To be able to include the Butterfly Pavilion in our ‘Science City’ project along with a future K-20 STEAM School with Adams 12 Five Star Schools and future library expansion makes this a project all in the region can be proud of.” The Butterfly Pavilion hosts more than 300,000 visitors each year at its current 30,000-square foot 11-acre campus in Westminster. The pavilion includes indoor and outdoor exhibits, nature trails, and a gift shop and offers a variety of programming to appeal to guests of all ages, including hands-on exhibits that allow visitors to observe and even touch creatures, including Rosie the tarantula. The Butterfly Pavilion also focuses on ongoing breeding, research and conservation efforts targeted at conservation of dragonflies, fireflies, butterflies, and spring snails, as well as monitoring and tracking Colorado butterfly trends and developing responsible models for habitat restoration for urban prairies, among many other programs.

The new facility will expand on current initiatives and incorporate: • Partnerships with other scientific and technology entities to create a “Science City” that connects educational institutions and students of all ages with groundbreaking conservation, education and research work; • A first-of-its-kind “Pollinator District” providing pollinatorfriendly habitat in parks, open spaces, corridors, and rooftops over the entire 900-acre development; • An Adams 12 School District K-12 Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) school located across the street from the new facility; • Expanded laboratory facilities for programming, breeding, and rearing invertebrates; and • Interactive exhibits designed to promote exploration, learning, and investigation as an essential part of the educational experience.

Words from the President:

This Holiday Season, Ask to Hear a Senior Story

W

e talk a lot about senior moments, like the time we put a plate in the refrigerator instead of in the dishwasher after eating, but we seldom talk about senior stories. Why is that? We know that anyone who has lived long enough to be called a senior must have stories to tell, but when we’re interacting with a senior, we don’t always take the time to ask questions that might lead to the telling of a true tale that will surprise or inspire us. I thought about this recently when my husband and I bought a motor home from a private owner south of Atlanta, Georgia. With what seemed like a moment’s notice, we flew down to pick it up. Our plan was to drive it back home, making many touristy stops along the way. While in Charleston, South Carolina, we rented a small car so we could see the sites. The rental car agent came over to the RV park and drove us to the rental car office. During that drive, we asked the nice older gentleman if he had lived in Charleston all his life. He said no. He and his wife moved to Charleston from New York to be closer to their grandkids. We asked him what he had done for a living in New York, and he told us he had been the data operations manager for Bank of America. He said that after 9-11, he decided it was time to retire. We wondered why, so we asked. His office had been on the thirty-sixth floor of the World Trade Center. We were astonished and I asked, “Were you at work that day?” “Yes,” he replied. We murmured how glad we were that he had gotten out. “I got out four times,” he said. After he got out of the building himself, he went back three times to help others get out. He shared what happened to him and his family after that tragic day, and I found myself wondering how the drive would have been if we had not bothered to ask him about his life. And I realized that I need to take the time to ask Broomfield seniors about their incredible life stories more often. If one man in Charleston, South Carolina, could impact the way I see the world, I could only imagine what the many seniors in Broomfield would do to my point of view. Stories change lives, and the stories seniors have to tell not only impact the lives of those they tell, I’m pretty sure they impact the seniors telling them, too, because being heard is one of more life-affirming things a person can experience. The SRB Support Fund Provides Smiles – and More to Local Seniors

Help us Support the Needs of Broomfield Seniors – Remember SRB in Your Holiday Giving

By Erica Hamilton

As

a busy working mom, I sometimes dream about retirement. Sleeping in, enjoying that leisurely cup of coffee while reading the news, traveling the world, hiking whenever I want to and truly just enjoying myself. While this vision of retirement is true for some (and often true for some portion of retirement for many people), retirement can have a very different look for many seniors. Many older adults have medical issues, need assistance with meals or transportation, and have real concerns about dementia, finances, and more. In fact, a recent survey reported that 28 percent of recent retirees say life is worse in retirement. The top two reasons for this dissatisfaction are income and cost of living. As Americans, we tend to have the “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mentality but sometimes there aren’t any bootstraps to pull up anymore. People need to retire for many reasons and getting another job isn’t always realistic. That’s why it is so important to have organizations like Senior Resources of Broomfield (SRB). SRB’s goal is to enhance the quality of life for all seniors. They do this by providing financial assistance to various senior services. SRB funds the SRB Support Fund which offsets meal fees for low-income seniors for both Meals on Wheels and Lakeshore Café, and did so to the tune of $26,000 in 2017. Having SRB pay for those meals means seniors in need are able to afford much needed prescriptions or utility payments, without having to do without food. SRB also helps fund special needs programs including hearing aids, glasses, and dental work. The impact of going without such services can cause an unintended loss of dignity. Have you ever met someone who is ashamed of their smile? Maybe they’ll hold up their hand over their face or close their lips together? It may sound silly that this could happen, but someone who is missing a tooth (unless you’re a 6-year-old) is often embarrassed about it so they try not to show their teeth. They lose the joy of laughing out loud. A bridge can help bring back pride in their appearance and the desire to show off a smile, not to mention the functional benefits. SRB will help fund a bridge (and is currently helping a client in need with this particular problem). Many other funding sources will only fund dentures requiring someone to lose ALL of their teeth before they can benefit from financial assistance. As you can see, SRB’s impact is huge. This person will be able to smile without being ashamed. Broomfield Senior Services is so lucky to have a non-profit like SRB to help seniors who are less fortunate. It is such a gift that we can call them up when someone needs help. Other providers have to say no. SRB helps us say yes. Broomfield’s Newest

Crown Jewel in the Works By Bette Erickson

Community amenities that local governments are responsible for include, among other things, safe and easily navigable roads, strong employment providers, successful public schools, a variety of shopping choices, health and human services, and recreational opportunities for citizens. There’s no mistaking, Broomfield does all that well.

A

nother thing Broomfield does well is listen to its residents. Knowing that people are the most valuable asset of a community, the city and county sought out stakeholder comments when it came to planning a new community/recreation/senior center. Slated to open in the spring of 2020, the new facility is a long-awaited and much-anticipated project. Some half dozen community forums throughout 2017 soliciting resident input gleaned thousands of important and useful suggestions. The existing Broomfield Community Center was opened in 1974, followed by the on-site addition of the Senior Center in 1990. Most participants refer to the facility as the BCC (Broomfield Community Center), rather than calling it a senior center or recreation center. The location of the joint community center and senior center will stay the same: 280 Spader Way. Building of the new center involves demolition of the northern portion of the existing facility and beginning construction of the new two-story community center while the senior services section of the facility stays operational. Eventually, however, some programs will be moved to the Paul Derda Recreation Center (PDRC) while other parts of the

32

building are being constructed. While the existing community center is 37,348 square feet, the new one will be approximately 87,500 square feet, or about the same size as the PDRC across town off of Lowell Blvd. And like the PDRC and the BCC, the new building is planned to be a truly multi-generational facility including offerings ranging from preschool programs through programs with an active aging focus – and seemingly everything conceivable in between. The organizing stakeholders, architects, and city and county staff found that while they hoped to tour other recreation centers in the Denver metro-area, there are not actually that many dual community-senior services facilities to be found. Still, the dual purpose model has shown itself to work well for the Broomfield community.

Following is a proposed estimate of square footage for some of the programs that the new center will provide: • 18,000 square foot Natatorium with a cool temperature (80-81°) lap pool, a warm pool (85°), and a smaller therapy pool (about 88°), for arthritis water aerobics • 15,000 square foot basketball, pickle ball, and volleyball courts • 3,000 square foot fitness studio • 3,700 square foot locker rooms/cabanas • 8,000 square foot community events space, incorporating enhancement of the Lakeshore Room (with its Brunner Reservoir view) and kitchen – important for preparing Broomfield’s Meals on Wheels and senior lunch program

• 1,500 square foot woodshop • 3,300 square foot classroom space for KinderMusic, senior programs, preschool offerings, and staff meeting space • 1,500 square foot child watch space • 1,050 square foot senior lounge

With a proposed $34.2 million dollar construction budget, time is of the essence in that some fear exists that because of the recent natural disasters (Puerto Rico; Houston; Napa Valley), steel, concrete, and other construction resources, combined with a skilled workforce may be scarce. The new community center will be somewhat of a crown jewel in the northeast corner of an area that will eventually include a redeveloped Civic Center. City planners, citizens, City Council, and others have been working on plans to develop the area east of Main St. between 1st Ave. and Midway. Proposals for that area include eateries, entertainment, affordable housing, residences, retail, and more, in a park-like setting. Urban Neighborhoods was selected as the developer to partner with Broomfield in the retail mixed use project area of the Civic Center design. Like the proposed new community center, the Civic Center Master Plan will reflect a lifestyle reminiscent of the values and expectations of Broomfield residents. Last July the Broomfield City Council approved consultant design work to Davis Partnership, PC, for the new community center, followed by issuance of Sales and Use Tax Revenue Bonds in August for the redevelopment project. The proposal to vote on a final design is slated to be presented to the Council on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at the George DiCiero City and County Building, One DesCombes Drive.

hen temperatures drop, the calls go up for North Metro Fire Rescue District as the risk for carbon monoxide poisoning increases. Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, poisonous gas that’s produced when fuels such as coal, wood, charcoal, oil, kerosene, propane, and natural gas don’t completely burn off. Many common items including portable fuelpowered generators and heaters, furnaces, grills, cars, and lawn mowers can produce carbon monoxide. Unlike if you had a natural gas leak, carbon monoxide carries no smell and can go undetected if you don’t have working CO alarms in your home. More than 150 people in the United States die every year from CO produced by consumer products, and thousands are sent to the emergency room with CO poisoning (Consumer Product Safety Commission).

Here are some tips to help keep your family safe from CO poisoning: • Install certified CO alarms, according to the manufacturer’s instructions, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home (Colorado law requires an alarm within 15 feet of each sleeping room when the house has an attached garage, fireplace or fuel-powered appliance). • Test CO alarms monthly like you would your smoke alarms, and change the batteries out twice a year. Alarms should be replaced according to your manufacturer’s instructions. • If your CO alarm sounds, go outside immediately and call 911. If you can’t get outside, get fresh air through an open window.

• When running fuel-powered equipment or your vehicle, make sure it isn’t in or near an enclosed area (such as a closed garage or indoors) that would keep the carbon monoxide gas from escaping. Even with open doors and windows, these spaces can trap CO and allow it to quickly build to lethal levels. • Make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are clear of debris, including snow during and after a snowstorm. • Don’t use your oven or stove to heat your home. • Have heating equipment and chimneys professionally inspected every year before winter. Symptoms of CO poisoning initially can be similar to flu symptoms, including: headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, and dizziness. With higher levels of poisoning, a victim may experience mental confusion, vomiting, lack of coordination, and eventually may die without access to fresh air and medical attention. If you experience these symptoms, get outside immediately and call 911 for assistance. Sources: Consumer Product Safety Commission and National Fire Protection Association

Married couples in America rarely die in a common incident or accident. As a result, one of those spouses will have to go through the settlement process upon their spouse’s death. The grief, frustration, and worry that arises in even the most confident of individuals after the loss of their spouse is often overwhelming. These issues can be greatly exasperated if one of the spouses is not particularly active in the couple’s financial lives. Often one of the spouses is talented in the areas of dealing with the taxes, paying bills, or handling investments. If the individual who is talented in those areas dies first, the surviving spouse is often overwhelmed and unprepared to handle these matters. As a result, they are thrust into dealing with them at the worst time they have ever experienced in their lives. This situation can leave them relying on con artists, ill-informed friends or relatives, or simply left alone and overwhelmed. This problem is greatly compounded when an appropriate estate plan is not in place causing additional expense, confusion, and problems. I strongly encourage couples to think carefully about their situation. What are each of your individual talents? What will the situation look like when one of you is gone? Are each of you really prepared to be without the other? Are there things you can do to help inform, educate, or prepare your spouse for the situation they will face after your death? Are you developing relationships with tax advisors, financial advisors, and legal advisors who they can rely on and trust after your death? There is nothing sadder than having a surviving spouse sit in our office and tell us how angry they are at their deceased spouse for leaving them in such a mess. And we see it all too often. Why not take the loving steps you need to take to help reduce the suffering and frustration that they will face after you are gone? If you would like to learn more about an effective estate planning process that is producing results for families, attend one of our complementary workshops.

FROM

By Sam Taylor, President and CEO of the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce

Broomfield Business

AT ITS BEST T

he business climate in Broomfield is the best it has ever been. With successful homegrown companies such as RSI, Sill-TerHar, and BSC, as well as many national headquarters and the soon to be built IKEA, Broomfield is open for business. According to the City and County economic department, 100 new companies have moved to or expanded in Broomfield during the first six months of 2017. When I became the CEO of the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce in July, I noticed something peculiar: this growth had somehow passed right by our Chamber. In fact, the number of member organizations actually decreased by over a third in the last four years. There are many reasons for this, one I frequently hear is that businesses are too busy and doing well, so what use is a Chamber? There are many benefits in joining your Chamber, however the primary reason all businesses in Broomfield should join is access to the community. We connect businesses to the entire community, and we make sure they have the access to the information, people, and tools to succeed. Broomfield is growing rapidly, and the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce is hard at work advocating for improved transportation, workforce housing, and amenities such as parks, trails, and places to shop and eat. But we can’t do it alone. The drop in membership has caused us to cut back on nearly every aspect of our promotion of the goals of the business community. Our staff is reduced, our programming has shrunk, and our outreach is stretched thin. To meet the needs of the business community, that community has to step up. We need companies to join, however joining the Chamber is not enough. Above all we need involvement; your Chamber needs you! Become an Ambassador to help new members thrive; lend your leadership to the Board or a committee to fulfill the goals of our membership, or sponsor an event. When I was a business owner, I joined the Broomfield Chamber almost immediately. I wasn’t looking for customers, I was investing in a belief that we are one community, and as a business owner I needed to support the idea that we are strongest when we work together. I have held on to that belief, as well as the conviction that a strong Chamber of Commerce is a major pillar for a successful community.
