ACTIVITIES
6 Ways to Create Community in your Neighborhood By BPT
It’s easy to see the value of living in a caring environment and being good neighbors. Consider these suggestions so you can promote a kinder, friendlier atmosphere in your own neighborhood.
together to socialize is bound to create goodwill and a friendlier neighborhood vibe. 5
Stay aware of who needs help. When possible, organize meal delivery, dog walking, transportation or other assistance for neighbors going through tough times. Teaming up to help others may make your neighbors feel more connected, and people on the receiving end of such kindness tend to pay it forward.
1 Introduce yourself. Take the first step! Instead of avoiding contact as your neighbors walk by, give a smile, say hi and learn your neighbors’ names. Even a brief exchange can go a long way toward helping you feel more like friends than strangers. 2 Bring new neighbors housewarming gifts. Make newcomers feel wanted and welcome by acknowledging their arrival with a thoughtful gift. Some sure-to-be-welcomed ideas are succulents, coffee mugs/coasters, a bottle of wine, or a beautifully fragranced soy candle from Bright Endeavors, a Chicago-area nonprofit that employs young mothers. 3 Give new families contact info for neighbors and neighborhood amenities.
6
Include phone numbers for doctors’ offices, dentists, schools, babysitters, sources of great takeout food, and any other assets you think may be helpful. People will appreciate your insider view into local amenities. 4 Organize a neighborhood event. It could be as simple as a yard sale or block party, or as strategically planned as a neighborhood cleanup or talent show. Any gathering that brings people
Live by the golden rule. Treat your neighbors as you would like to be treated. Clean up after pets and kids, drive through at reasonable speeds, don’t be overly loud, return anything you’ve borrowed and generally be considerate of your neighbors. It feels good to live in a neighborhood that feels more like a community than an anonymous collection of strangers. Consider how you can take the initiative to create warmth and peace within your own neighborhood. Find more information, visit BrightEndeavors.org.

HEALTH + WELLNESS
Sciatica: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment Options By Dr. Eric Choi
Sciatica is one of the most common symptoms patients come into my office for. It is also one of the most misunderstood symptoms. It is important to remember that sciatica is a symptom, not a condition. Definition/Presentation of Symptoms Sciatica describes the pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, which is the largest single nerve in the human body. It runs from each side of the lower spine through deep muscles in the buttock, back of the thigh, and down to the foot. Sciatica usually affects only one side of the lower body, often radiating from the lower back and down the leg. Depending on which part of the sciatic nerve is affected, the pain may also extend into the foot or toes. Other symptoms include weakness, numbness or difficulty moving the leg or foot, constant pain on one side of the buttocks, and more. Cause The most common cause of sciatica is usually pressure on the sciatic nerve from a disc protrusion or extrusion (also referred to as a
8
herniated/ruptured/slipped disc, pinched nerve, etc.), degenerative disc disease, or spinal stenosis. Most cases of sciatica will get better with time and non-surgical care. However, some sciatica symptoms may indicate a potentially serious condition and require immediate medical attention. If you experience pain affecting both legs, severe weakness, unbearable pain that may suggest a compressed nerve, bowel or bladder incontinence, or progressive loss of sensation in the legs, urgent medical attention is appropriate.

Treatment Options There are different types of non-surgical treatment options available to help alleviate the pain and discomfort of sciatica. A chiropractor may recommend spinal decompression chiropractic adjustment, exercise and physical therapy, cold laser therapy, heat/ice, or medications. At your initial consultation, we will discuss more in detail about the treatment options that will work best for you. ARTS + CULTURE
Rocky Mountain Brassworks Christmas Festival Brass bands date back to the early 19th century and the Industrial Revolution. Employers began to finance work bands to decrease the political activity with which the working class seemed preoccupied during their leisure time, and the idea blossomed. Brass bands have become one of the world’s most widespread forms of amateur musical performance. Today there are several hundred brass bands in North America and it is exciting to see the genre make a valuable and unique contribution to the rich musical heritage of America. John Kincaid, Professor of Music at Western State College in Gunnison, CO, has long been an expert on brass bands in the world. While on sabbatical leave from his duties at WSC, he traveled to New Zealand and researched the brass bands of the South Pacific. He shared his enthusiasm and expertise with many brass players and founded what is now known as the Colorado Brass Band. After several years, several Denver area residents got together and decided to start a “local” brass band, which would rehearse on a regular basis. The first band was started in conjunction with the Denver Parks and Recreation Department and used borrowed tenor horns that were old and in terrible disrepair. After several months of struggling, the band decided to withdraw from the sponsorship of DP&RD and “go independent.” In 1978 players were recruited from the Front Range and the band’s name became “Rocky Mountain Brassworks,” with Paul Curnow as the director. Since 1991 the band has performed four times at the Colorado Music Educators convention in Colorado Springs, for the Lord Mayor of

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Meet Sterling Bailey, Founder of Cap For Kids By Tammy Hart
What are hospitals do you visit?
When and what made you start Cap For Kids? I initially got the idea in 2013. I had been doing some charity fund raising with Boston Children’s Hospital’s Oncology department and through that, I got to know some of the children and their stories. Their stories touched me so much that I wanted to do more. I just didn’t know how. At the same time, I had made friends with several prominent cosplayers in the US and they encouraged me to do a Captain America cosplay. I thought, maybe one day but when would I have time for that? Then, I ran across this story of Lenny Robinson, the Route 29 Batman and learned how he would visit sick children in hospitals on the east coast, dressed as Batman. This got me thinking, if Batman can do this, what about Captain America. From there, it began. I put together a cosplay and started doing visits and raising funds for Children’s Hospital Colorado and Brent’s place. Then, in late 2014, I put together a board of directors and we changed the direction and focus of the charity to provide financial and

emotional support to families what had a child undergoing cancer treatment. In 2015 we incorporated in the state of Colorado as a nonprofit corporation and in 2016, we received our 501(c)(3) designation from the IRS as a public charity. Since that time, we have grown in every measurable way. Including number of volunteers, donations raised, families helped.
We’ve sponsored 13 families so far with more on the way. – Sterling goes to visit each child in the hospital until they go home! He is a amazing person who personally gives of his time and money not just to the children but to help the families pay for bills while they are in the hospital with their child. For more information about Cap For Kids visit: www.capforkids.org.
Do you know someone who selflessly gives to the community, is committed to a cause or organization, helps others in the neighborhood, or simply makes their own corner of the world a better place? We’d like to shine a spotlight on them!

ADVERTORIAL
One-on-One Dental Care By Tabatha Stewart
Dr. Jennifer Helgeson was seven years old when she knew she wanted to become a dentist. Female dentists and doctors were rare in Southern Illinois - where she grew up - but that didn’t stop her from following her dream. “My dentist was kind, patient and he wore these glasses that allowed me to see what he was doing at all times,” said Dr. Helgeson. “He talked me through everything he did, showed me his instruments and because of that personal care I knew that I wanted to become a dentist.” Dr. Helgeson went on to attend one of the top dental schools in the nation at The University of Michigan. After graduating from their extensive clinical program in 1998, she spent several years practicing as many types of dentistry as she could - searching for her niche in the healthcare industry. After 17 years of private practice in Southeast Denver, she and her husband Aaron moved North to Thornton and opened Smile High Dental Care 3 years ago. There they provide a wide range of dental services to their dental patients, their family and friends. One-on-one personalized service is Dr. Helgeson’s practice model - meaning that while some dental practices utilize hygienists and support staff to do the bulk of the work, she performs most of the work on each patient herself. “My philosophy has changed over the years. I am one-on-one with each patient,” said Dr. Helgeson. “I take care of most dental appointments from start to finish and even clean my patient’s teeth my-
self…it’s amazing how much more I see as a dentist by spending that additional time with them.” Smile High Dental Care offers a $35 New Patient Special which includes x-rays, an exam and personalized consultation with Dr. Helgeson. Seniors and military veterans are specialized patient populations with which Dr. Helgeson enjoys working. She offers cash discounts to both. Spending more time with patients and making sure that they are comfortable and understand each procedure are top priorities for Dr. Helgeson. “Making sure every patient has a good experience and building trust with them is what I strive for,” said Dr. Helgeson. Smile High Dental Care is conveniently located at 10311 Washington Street in Thornton – just one block south of the 104th and Washington intersection.
Visit their website at www.SmileHighDentalCare.com for more information or call (720) 383-8236 and schedule that first important appointment today.

Here are a few tips to help you choose and serve wine for a successful holiday party or dinner. Keep it Simple Choose just one good red wine and one good white wine varietal to serve during your cocktail or dinner party if you want to avoid feeling overwhelmed. You could choose another varietal or two for guests to sample if you’re feeling adventurous, but having two contrasting options is a great start, and sometimes all you need. Since holiday meals can be heavy (or at least plentiful!), choose wines that are not overly rich or full-bodied. Instead, look for lighter wines that are fruity and bright, with soft tannins, that provide a nice complement to a big, rich meal. For example, Sanford Winery offers popular options in both chardonnay and pinot noir that can be a perfect duo to serve your guests. Offering a refreshing fruit and cheese plate after dinner gives guests the chance to savor the last sips of wine before dessert and coffee are served. Don’t let the “rules” of pairing wine and food throw you off - keep both a red wine and a white wine on the table and let guests experiment for themselves and decide what they prefer! Wine Serving Tricks •
•
Since the temperature of the room and your guests’ hands will warm the wine glasses throughout the meal, it’s a good idea to chill both red and white wines for a while before serving. Create fun, holiday-themed DIY wine charms for each
• • •
guest, especially if you’re serving buffet-style or enjoying a cocktail hour before dinner. Check your local craft store or websites like Pinterest for fun ideas. Each 750 ML bottle contains approximately 5 glasses of wine, so plan your wine supply accordingly. Only fill each guest’s glass one-half to two-thirds full, to give the wine room to breathe. Wine left in the bottle? Freeze leftover wine in ice cube trays, then you’ll have ready-to-use “wine ice cubes” for recipes that require cooking with wine another day or a flavorful option to chill down your next glass of wine without diluting it.
Let Wine Do Double Duty Optimize and harmonize flavors by cooking a dish that incorporates the same varietal of wine your guests will be drinking. For example, a recipe for Citrus and Garlic Roasted Turkey uses pinot noir to create a sweet and tangy sauce along with fresh cranberries, rhubarb and tangerines. Visit sanfordwinery.com/recipe/citrus-and-garlic-roasted-turkey for the full recipe. Whether you’re using a red wine or white wine in your cooking, don’t opt for an inferior “cooking wine,” but use the same quality wine you plan to serve during the meal. Because the alcohol cooks out of the food you’re preparing, what’s left is the flavor of the wine - and that will make a big difference to the flavor of your finished dish.
Holiday entertaining does not have to be overly complicated. Going for flavors you enjoy and offering your guests a few options in terms of food and wine will result in a successful meal or party every time. What really counts is relaxing and enjoying the meal and the wine together.

Add Mexican Flair to Game Day Favorites By Family Features
Football season, for many people, is just as much about the food as it is about the action. When you’re huddling up to figure out how to score a touchdown with your game day spread, consider taking your snacks to the next level by adding an authentic Mexican flair. Opt for traditional Mexican ingredients like chorizo, queso fresco or cotija in meals and snacks that are already football mainstays, including nachos, tacos and quesadillas, and consider all the possibilities that incorporating these flavorful ingredients can add to other classic dishes like sliders and potato skins. Ideal for tailgate season, Cacique offers Mexican-Style Queso Dips made with real queso fresco and Fully Cooked Chorizos made with premium pork shoulder to help fans easily add Mexican flavor to indulgent game day favorites. Both use high-quality ingredients and are microwavable, so they taste authentic and can be ready in minutes so no one misses any of the big plays or touchdowns.
Consider these twists you can add to your favorite game time snacks: •
Loaded Avocados: Give avocados the potato skin treatment by loading them up with delicious toppings like chorizo, queso fresco and crema - just don’t eat the skin.
•
Cheese Fries: Drizzle queso dip over French fries or top with crumbles of flavorful Cacique Chorizo and Cotija.
•
Robust Sliders: Skip regular beef patties and spoon the rich seasoning and punch of flavor that chorizo brings to your favorite slider rolls then top with your favorite cheese and salsa.
•
Mac and Cheese: For a new take on mac and cheese, toss cooked macaroni noodles with your favorite Cacique Queso Dip and top with crushed tortilla chips.

PETS
Tips for Picking the Perfect Pet By BPT
If you’re considering adopting a pet this holiday season, you want to make sure this addition will be perfect for your family to ensure that your home will be its forever. The novelty of a new pet can wear off once the magic of the holidays dissipates, but figuring out your ideal pet before you make the big decision can guarantee that the love won’t fade even after the decorations are boxed up and the snow has melted.
Here are four questions to consider in your search for the right pet: What is your family dynamic? 1 If you have young children, a medium- or large-sized dog or an adult cat may be a better match than a kitten or small dog that could be hurt during rowdy play. Are you an older adult seeking a companion? Consider a cat or a lap dog. If you choose a puppy or kitten, be prepared to educate children about safe handling. If you have other pets, make sure that the cat or dog you’re considering gets along with other animals. If someone in your family has allergies, consider a hypo-allergenic pup, a hairless cat, a lizard, or another not-so-furry creature.
2 What is your lifestyle?
Do you work long hours, or have plenty of free time? Many cats, dogs, and other pets require little exercise to be happy and healthy, while some dogs need a vigorous workout daily. Kittens and puppies require a time investment to train and help them develop into healthy, well-balanced adults. Where do you live?
3 Whether you live in an apartment or a house with a fenced yard factors into the type of pet you choose. A cat, bunny, or reptile might be suitable for smaller spaces, but other pets require plenty of room to roam.
4 Why do you want a pet?
Are you seeking a companion, a protector, or a playmate for your children or other pets? Are you looking for a kitten or puppy to grow up with your children? Once you’ve decided on the perfect pet for you, the next step is to decide where to find them. Options range from pet stores to breeders to the Purina Shelter Champions Partner Program. No matter where your search lands you, meeting your new companion will be an experience your family will treasure forever.

HOME
Creating a Spa Oasis in Your Home By Family Features
It’s no secret that the holidays are the most exciting—and stressful—time of year. Transforming your bathroom into a personal home spa will allow you to relax and decompress in the comfort of your own home. By making space and removing clutter, along with adding decorative touches, you can achieve a stylish spa-like atmosphere you can enjoy even after the holidays are over.
A tiered spice rack keeps your cabinets organized and makes your morning and night routines easier. Sliding shelves can make your bath more relaxing by bringing bath essentials right to you. Conveniently store hairstyling tools in one location without compromising design or space with a vanity appliance pullout.
Float Your Vanity When it’s time to retreat, a spa-like bathroom promises sanctuary in its design. Floating vanities mount directly to the wall, providing more floor space and creating a streamlined look. By mounting the vanity to a wall, the space is broadened, naturally making the bathroom look and feel larger.
Incorporate Ample Lighting Design with relaxation in mind; the calm, warmer tones and ambient lighting help lend a relaxing vibe. Cabinet lighting adds depth, dimension and visual interest to a bathroom. An ideal lighting design goes beyond a centralized ceiling fixture and includes multiple layers of light. Lighting in the bathroom is essential; illumination for everyday tasks can make your bath appear larger, add warmth and set the right mood.
Clever, Concealed Storage Style and functionality combine in bath cabinets and vanities designed to keep your space serenely ordered and uncluttered. To get the spa-like bathroom look, consider adding organizational solutions like a tiered spice rack, sliding shelves and vanity appliance pullouts from Wellborn Cabinet.
Infuse Natural Elements Nature can be infused into the design by playing on textures with metals, earth tones, the graining in the cabinetry and the addition of a subtle waterfall separating the his-and-her vanity to provide a relaxing retreat. Check out Wellborn Cabinet’s Biscotti Cherry and Terra Oak embossed melamine for an example of how to incorporate textures and natural elements. For more bathroom remodeling ideas, visit www.wellborn.com.
