W
hen Seymour Schreiber, owner of Atticfan.com in Denver, installed his first attic fan in the mid 1970’s, he wasn’t sure he would ever do it again. “We had been installing little fans on the roofs to help cool the attic,” said Schreiber. “One of my customers wanted a really big fan, and asked us to look into it for him. We put this big fan in and I thought ‘we’re never going to do this again.’ It was like putting an airplane engine in the attic.” Over the next few years Schreiber noticed how well it worked. He has been installing attic fans throughout Colorado ever since. “People love this design. In Colorado you have this wonderful climate where it’s hot during the day but cools down at night. The attic fan can solve that problem,” explained Schreiber. According to Schreiber, the technology has been used in the South for more than a century, and with the evolution of home designs in Colorado, is an efficient way to help cool your home. Modern homes are insulated and energy efficient, but not designed to cool down very well. High ceilings in a home allows the hot air to concentrate upstairs, which can make it frustrating to cool a home in the summer.
Schreiber is passionate about his family business, which employs himself and five others. He offers free estimates, and he enjoys educating people about how to live more comfortably for less money. “It’s not actually about the temperature, or how many degrees it can cool,” said Schreiber. “It’s about comfort, and simply put, moving air cools us down, even on a hot day. I didn’t invent this technology. I just stumbled across it. But I’m impressed by it, and it makes people’s lives better.”

bone-in pork shoulder roast (4 pounds) 1 2 cups hickory chips 1 cup water 1 ½ cups barbecue sauce 1 ½ cups honey 1 cup ketchup 8-10 rolls Chopped jalapeño peppers (optional) Chopped onion (optional) Chopped pickles (optional)

DIRECTIONS: 1. To make Pork Rub: Stir together sugar, chili powder, paprika, seasoned salt, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, cumin, pepper and cayenne pepper. 2. Massage Pork Rub over surface of pork and let stand 30 minutes. 3. Soak hickory chips in water; drain well. Wrap chips in foil; punch holes in foil and place on top of gas grill set on high. When chips begin to smoke, place pork on grill and cook until well browned on all sides with lid closed, about 30-45 minutes. 4. Heat oven to 300 F. 5. Remove pork from grill and place in turkey-size oven bag set in large, shallow baking dish. Add water and seal well; pierce bag several times with small knife. Cook 3-3 1/2 hours, or until meat is tender and pork bone can be removed easily. Remove from oven. Remove bone and set aside until cool enough to handle. 6. Shred meat into small pieces, removing fat. Add juices from cooking bag, skimming off excess fat. 7. In separate saucepan, stir together barbecue sauce, honey and ketchup, cooking until hot and honey has dissolved. Stir most of sauce into shredded pork and mix well. 8. As our population ages there has been a dramatic increase in the number of “Granny Snatching” cases. Medicine has made great strides in the past few decades that has increased the life span of the general population. However, the increased life span has not been matched by an increase in the ability of medicine to help the increased number of the elderly suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, with the dispersal of families around the country there has been an increase in the number of children living in a separate state from an aging parent. Too frequently a loving family member may cross a state line, load up the aging person, taking them to a separate state, and then seeking guardianship in the family member’s state in order to assist them. Another scenario also occurs where a family member may cross a state line, load up the aging person, take them to a separate state, and seek guardianship in the family member’s state to gain control of the aging person’s assets (money). This second scenario is frequently referred to as “Granny Snatching.” The problem that arises is “Which state has jurisdiction?” Jurisdiction is the ability to exercise judicial authority, over the aging person and the guardianship. In 2008 Colorado became one of what is now 45 states to adopt the Uniform Adult Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Jurisdiction Act (UAGPPJA). The UAGPPJA clearly defines which state’s courts has the ability to resolve the issues involved. One of the main criteria is what is known as the aging adult’s “home state.” The home state, in general, is the state in which the aging person was physically present, including any period of temporary absence, for at least six consecutive months for the period immediately prior to the guardianship matter is sought. How to Make Your Yard

With winter in the rear view, it’s safe to say we are all ready to embrace the longer days and warmer temperatures of summer. There’s nothing better in summer than spending time with friends and family hanging out in the backyard. But for summer, we want to see the bright, vibrant colors that our gardens and landscaping just couldn’t give us in the colder months.

usty Hettinger, owner of The Sprucery Garden Center in Parker, says a great way to get distinct bold colors is to plant annuals, flowers that you need to plant every year. “You can find more exotic colors with annuals – not just your standard white or red,” says Hettinger, who says he offers flowers with two or three different colors in one plant. Jim Klett, Director of CSU’s Annual Trial Garden, seconds the idea of opting for annuals. “In March and April, pansies and violas are a colorful choice. As the season progresses and we get into flowers that like more heat, so petunias, marigolds, and salvia. Later in summer into fall, geraniums like the cool nights,” he explains. Klett says that Colorado is blessed with a lot of sunshine, which annuals love. As far as colors go, he shares that the trendiest colors that people are looking for right now are purple and plum. To achieve this trend, Klett recommends some zinnias, petunias, salvias, dianthus, and even calibrachoas for baskets. Annuals might be great for adding color, but you need to replant them every year. If that sounds like a bit much, perennials are the way to go, and
they can even stick around until November, says Klett. But he points out that it takes more skill to really know perennials, and you’re just not going to get that same color that you would from annuals. Other popular things that people are looking for in their yard landscaping is low maintenance and colors that flow through the yard, says Hettinger. He’s also seeing people want flowers that local deer won’t munch on. For those dealing with that issue, he recommends cat nip, salvia, daisy, and lavender since deer most likely won’t eat these flowers. But it’s not just flowers that can add color and vibrancy to a yard’s landscape. Hettinger says trees, such as crab apple trees, redbud trees, and pear trees, can display lots of color in a unique way. Klett says catalpas (which bloom in late May or June), spring elms, and silver maples are options, too. For a bright and sunny tree, he recommends the golden raintree. “For the golden raintree, it will bloom mid-summer and result in such beautiful yellow flowers,” he says. Shrubs can add color, too. Klett says flowering plum shrub are a wonderful addition for shrubs. Regardless of what you choose to plant, an easy way to get bold colors is by choosing colorful pottery for your plants.
WHERE TO BEGIN While it’s great to hear suggestions of different types of flowers and plants that thrive in Colorado, it can all be a bit intimidating or overwhelming if you’re new to gardening and landscaping. It could be helpful to visit a garden center with experts who can help you navigate what’s best for you. Take some time to collect images of ideas you’re looking to implement in your space. If seeking help from a professional, Hettinger always recommends bringing photos of the existing landscaping, not just photos of what you want to have in the future. “With photos, we can see things like existing shrubs, and we can help them design something new,” he says. “It’s really valuable, and it saves so much time. We can help tweak their ideas or go somewhere entirely different.” Besides shaping the vision, it also helps to determine the facts of the current situation, such as how much sun or shade the area receives and determining irrigation. What you think would look the best, might not work depending on these types of factors. Whether jumping in yourself or getting help from a pro, start small, advises Klett. “Take time to observe the site you’re in, and don’t be too ambitious when you’re first starting out,” he recommends. He said a great, safe place to start is container plants then maybe expanding to a small part of the yard.

Echols, owner of Floor Covering Liquidators, located at 5350 Federal Blvd, sold his first piece of carpet in 1969. It was gold, two-inch shag carpeting that was so popular back then. After being rejected by the Army, Echols was attending a junior college in Corpus Christi, Texas, and working at a local department store. The owner of the tore took a liking to Echols, and Echols moved from department to department learning the business. He settled into the furniture and floor covering department, and has been helping people decorate their homes ever since. “I never in a million years thought I would be doing this 50 years later,” said Echols. “I knew then that I couldn’t sing, I couldn’t dance and I couldn’t type, so I took the opportunity and it’s worked out well for me.” Echols took to traveling to sell carpet and flooring, and said his business was born out of desperation. “The original start was just out of a need from people I met as a traveling salesman. People would ask if I could get them this or that, and it just kind of snowballed,” said Echols. After establishing many relationships both with clients and manufacturers and distributors, Echols saw the opportunity to buy product in bulk, and serve as a broker between everyone involved in the process. “A mill would say ‘I have 30 rolls of Berber, do you want it?’ I would take phone calls and find people who could use the carpet,”
said Echols. “You build relationships along the way, and I have built my business based on getting customers to all us. If we can help you we will, but if we can’t we’ll tell you so.” Floor Covering Liquidators now employs seven people, and includes 8,000 feet of warehouse, which houses nearly 35,000 feet of carpet. Bottoms Up Yoga at Local Breweries By Kristen Kuchar
Forget the gym – head to the brewery if you want to be healthier and get in shape. Gone are the days where beer is only associated with overindulging on pub food and the dreaded “beer belly.” In fact, local breweries are showing it’s actually quite the opposite.
More and more Colorado breweries are offering yoga and other fitness classes held right in the unique setting of the brewery. Students gather for the activity, and then stick around to enjoy a fresh beer together, which is many times included in the cost to attend or discounted for those who attend. The end result is positive all around – people are doing something physical in a comfortable, familiar environment that’s often less intimidating than walking into a yoga studio or a gym. It turns exercise into a social, fun activity and best of all, it’s followed by a cold beer when it’s all over. “As a brewery owner, it’s a unique way to offer something new to the community and be more engaged with our community in general,” says Bob Lichens, co-owner of bike-themed brewery Endo Brewing in Lafayette (2755 Dagny Way, endobrewing.com). Alexandria Boespflug, who is the yoga instructor at the brewery, feels when it comes to yoga, it’s never about where or how you’re doing it, but it’s about showing up and experiencing the moment. “Yoga can be done anywhere, and I think the breweries that embrace this are seeing it transform into a great way of meeting new people and connecting them to others,” she says. The cost of the class is $10, and if you ride your bike to the class (with a helmet), you get $1 off your Endo pint. Brewery goers are loving that opportunity to connect and for many, try something 26

Beer and fitness is becoming increasingly popular amongst Coloradoans. “Class turnout has been growing steadily,” says, Samara Bridwell, Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Odyssey Beerwerks in Arvada (5535 W. 56th Avenue, odysseybeerwerks.com). The brewery’s “Tapped in Yoga” class is one-hour and welcomes all skill levels to participate. Odyssey’s yoga instructor Allie Beckmann, who has taught almost 1000 hours of yoga, says the atmosphere of the brewery seems to be inviting and encouraging to people who might be hesitant to go to a traditional class in a studio setting. “I think the brewery encourages a little more relaxation and lightness, which I try to bring into my classes everywhere,” she says. Beckmann says she’s happily seen a lot of newcomers to yoga there and even those taking their first class at the brewery. The opportunity to practice yoga is popping up everywhere, including at Echo Brewing in downtown Erie (600 Briggs Street, 720-361-2332) and Rails End Brewing in Broomfield (11625 Reed Ct., railsendbeerco.com) where donations from the class go to support The Give Back Yoga Foundation. But incorporating a healthy experience into a love for beer isn’t limited to just yoga. Breweries are also offering fast-paced, intense workouts, giving people a chance to sweat and get their heart rate up and cool down with a refreshing brew. to seasoned athletes). After the class, there is a discount on beers for those who have completed it, and conveniently, it’s also discounted growler night. An eclectic workout, Push Up & Pints, is held twice a month at Living The Dream Brewing in Littleton (12305 N. Dumont Way, livingthedreambrewing.com). The class starts with a warm up then moves into stations, where everyone talks and laughs with each other. From then, students move into games and finish with a 20-minute yoga stretch. The $10 fee includes all the equipment, motivation and guidance, and your first pint. The class attracts singles as well as couples looking for a fun date night. Brian Fischer, marketing manager for the brewery, says part of the success of the class is simply that exercise is more fun and effective in a group setting. And it doesn’t hurt that working out in a brewery really makes it truly an unexpected environment to do it. “Having a shared reward at the end is motivating, and we always say ‘Earn your beer’,” he says.

Spin the compass---no matter which direction you follow it, you’ll find great destinations in Denver’s north-metro area. With options in Northglenn, Thornton, Erie, Westminster, Broomfield, Superior, Arvada and Lafayette, following are a few ideas.
BROOMFIELD How about exploring Broomfield’s very own public art Sculpture Trail? Visit: www.Broomfield.org/2328/Broomfield-Sculpture-Trail, to be treated to a preview of the magnificent public art. The trail is in Broomfield’s County Commons and is near a playground and the Dog Park (www.broomfield.org/Facilities/Facility/Details/39). While you’re at it, consider a hike along one of Broomfield’s more than 250-miles of trails laced in and around the city. To get inspired, visitwww.broomfield.org/1335/Broomfield-Trails-Map. If you and your fellow hikers want to narrow the search further, go to www.broomfield. org using the term, “Broomfield 100.” Each summer, Broomfield’s Open Space and Trails department puts together a pocket guide offering citizens a choice of some 100 miles of trails to hike. The program kicks off with its annual “Trails Day” event, this year scheduled at 7:30 a.m., Saturday, June 2 at Legacy High School, 2701 W. 136th Ave. in Broomfield.
SUPERIOR Like Broomfield, the Town of Superior is recognizing National Trails Day with a hike, numerous festivities and more, but they are doing it on Sunday, June 3rd from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Coalton Trailhead, 3495 McCaslin Blvd. A bike ride kicks off from the trailhead at 8:15 a.m. Boulder County Rangers and other outdoor enthusiasts will be available to chat with visitors and an old-time wagon ride is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to noon along the trail. ARVADA In nearby Arvada, a visit to the celebrated Arvada Center is worth the trip. The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities is one of the largest multidisciplinary arts centers in the country. The venue produces seven theatrical productions a year and uses its 526-seat Main Stage and smaller 226-seat Black Box Theatre for performances. Moreover, the Center offers some 600 courses/year in the performing arts, dance, music, ceramics, photography, visual arts and humanities. The scenic park with tennis courts, playgrounds and wildlife, overlooks Oberon Lakes. Visitors are encouraged to browse the prairie grasses and wetland areas, walk through a demonstration garden, and explore its interpretive trails. LAFAYETTE Lafayette offers a destination-worthy WOW! Children’s Museum, suitable for youngsters 2 to 8-years old. WESTMINSTER Many of us grew up roller skating, and that bit-o-retro fun hasn’t gone away. Also in Westminster is the famed Butterfly Pavilion. Does holding a live, furry tarantula the size of a peach appeal to you? Rosie the tarantula is popular with youngsters and grandparents alike. NORTHGLENN No Denver north-metro guide would be complete without mentioning
all the recreational amenities of Northglenn. The city, with its more than two-dozen parks throughout the area, has lakes, open space, tennis courts, skateboarding and roller hockey spots. Additionally, it provides high levels of mono-unsaturated fat (“good” fat) and low levels of saturated fat (“bad” fat), making it a more nutritional choice when compared to butter or margarine. 1/2 cup, plus 2 tablespoons, extra light olive oil, divided, plus additional for coating pan

1 cup granulated sugar
•
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
•
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
•
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
•
1/4 teaspoon table salt
•
1/2 cup half-and-half
•
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
•
1 large egg, lightly beaten
•
1/4 cup, plus 1/3 cup, mini dark chocolate chips, divided
•
1 cup canned dulce de leche
•
flaky sea salt (optional)
Position rack in center of oven and heat to 350 F. Lightly coat 9-inch round cake pan with olive oil and line bottom with parchment paper. Lightly coat parchment with olive oil.
2. In large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Stir in half-and-half, 1/2 cup olive oil and vanilla. With electric mixer, beat in egg until well blended. Scrape batter into prepared cake pan and sprinkle top with 1/4 cup mini chips. 3. Bake cake 25-30 minutes, or until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean. Place cake on cooling rack 10 minutes then turn cake out onto rack and let cool completely. 4. In medium saucepan, heat dulce de leche over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add remaining olive oil and chocolate chips and stir until chocolate has melted and mixture is smooth. Remove pan from heat. 5. Transfer cake to serving plate. Pour icing over cooled cake, sprinkle with flaky salt, if desired, and serve.
