FROM THE
In This Issue... If you are like me, you are beginning to tire of the long cold winter. The shortest month of the year always seems to last the longest. Well – don’t let the February blues get you down. Put on a pot of delicious soup (see our recipes on page 28), grab a steamy cup of cocoa and your favorite fluffly blanket, and curl up in the comfy chair to enjoy this issue of The Broomfielder. This month we offer a round-up of some of Broomfield’s major medical facilities. As our community has grown, so have our healthcare options and Dan Powers provides a look at some of the specialties you will find at our hospitals. We also offer some heart health tips for women and a guide to the most nourishing foods to feed your dry winter skin. Don’t miss our quarterly update from Mayor Randy Ahrens on page 18 and a round-up of great local events all month long peppered throughout the issue. Holy Family High School News This month we continue our local high school series and once again I am excited to share a trio of articles written by students from Holy Family High School. Last month we featured Broomfield High School and next month we plan to highlight Legacy. I will never forget the impact of being able to write articles and have them printed in the local paper when I was a young writer and really wanted to give some of today’s young journalists the same opportunity. I hope you find the articles fun and informative, and a valuable window to our high school students who are such an important part of our community. I would like to thank Holy Family High School student Kendall Holmes for helping coordinate this section and getting it done during Winter Break! Life in Broomfield Photos One of the new content features we have added in 2017 is a regular photo feature from our readers. For the April issue we would like to receive your best photos depicting “Life in Broomfield.” We are looking for photos with people in them, at Broomfield locations, enjoying life in our community. So stop and capture your best photos of Broomfield life and send them to The Broomfielder. We might even use the best photo on the cover of the April issue. Submissions should be a full-color, vertical, highresolution photo of a Broomfield venue or location, and illustrate “Life in Broomfield.” Please send your submissions to graphics@loudmouthmedia.com by March 6, 2017. Thanks for reading,
Tina Eichner 6

HAPPENINGS
ARTS+CULTURE FEBRUARY 08
Don’t miss the Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities Benefit at 6:00 p.m. at the Broomfield Auditorium. The Benefit will feature a special one-hour performance by Lannie Garrett and her band, “After Midnight,” in “Swing Sets: Benny, Basie, and Beyond.” In 2016 Lannie was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame. She recently announced that she will no longer be doing shows at the Clocktower Cabaret in downtown Denver, therefore, the BCAH Benefit is one of the select shows she will be doing this year. Last year, the BCAH Benefit was a great success with Lannie performing “The Chick Sings Frank: A Sinatra Tribute.” The evening will include, Dave Shirley, a popular comedian and friend of Lannie’s, who will be serving as the event emcee and the host for a game of “Grins & Frowns.” Dave became wellknown after performing on “America’s Got Talent.” In addition, the Benefit will include a silent auction, craft beer tasting by Wonderland Brewing Co., and a popcorn/trail mix bar by the Dessert Stand in the lobby that evening. Proceeds from the event support the non-profit efforts of the BCAH in promoting the cultural landscape of Broomfield, encouraging diverse programming for residents from newborn to 100 years old, and helping artists and art organizations thrive in the Broomfield community. Admission is $32.00 for BCAH members and $37.00 for non-members. Tickets can be purchased by calling 303-460-6800 or at http:// www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2719851 (an online processing fee applies).

Bal Swan
Helps Preschool Students Get Off to a Great Start
By Elizabeth Buckingham
According to the National Education Association, early childhood education benefits both individuals and the community overall. Their research shows that “providing a high-quality education for children before they turn five yields significant long-term benefits.” One study found that individuals who were enrolled in a quality preschool program ultimately earned up to $2,000 more per month than those who were not, and young people in preschool programs were more likely to graduate from high school, own homes, and have longer marriages. Other studies show similar results: children in good preschool programs are less likely to repeat grades or get into future trouble with the law. Bal Swan Children’s Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit recently named the best preschool in Broomfield, focuses on meeting the developmental needs of children of all abilities in a nurturing environment. Beverly Ferguson, Bal Swan’s director of operations, said “the biggest gift we can give our children is to teach them how to cope socially and emotionally.” She highlights the school’s unique Pyramid Plus teaching model, which emphasizes
inclusion and acceptance of children of all abilities. “You can always recognize a Bal Swan student,” she stated, “by the way they accept other children without question.” Bal Swan also values the parent as the child’s lifelong teacher, and believes parents are a vital component of the school’s interdisciplinary teams. Between parent-teacher conferences, informal meetings, and student assessment documents, Bal Swan parents and staff regularly communicate and share information. Bal Swan also offers parenting classes to ensure that teachings at home and at school correspond. This team approach is a service that benefits all of Bal Swan’s students, as teachers, parents, and therapists have more resources to manage the child’s growth and development. Bal Swan has served Broomfield families for more than fifty years and is one of the few preschools in Colorado to earn a Colorado Shines Level 5 rating. Whether you’re a new parent interested in enrolling your child, or a potential donor who wants to make a difference in the community, you can learn more about Bal Swan by visiting www.balswan.org.

Women’s Heart Health By Dr. Monica Gressianu
When it comes to your heart, you definitely want to be sure you know all the facts. And, with women, the symptoms of a problem can be very different than those for men. So, let’s take just a few moments to share some of the latest information on the #1 killer of women, heart disease. Yes, that’s right, it is not cancer.
Q. Can I avoid heart disease? A. There are many things you can do to help prevent heart disease. The key components of prevention are around a healthy diet and consistent exercise every day. A healthy diet is rich in fiber, including fruits and vegetables. With exercise, it is all about taking time each day to keep your body moving and less about the specific amount of time. There are also certain factors you cannot avoid, such as family history. Knowing your risk factors is important.
Q. So what are the signs/symptoms of heart attack in women? A. Not only are the traditional signs of a heart attack important for women, but there are several more that tend to be present in women. TRADITIONAL SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: • • • • •
Sudden, intense chest pain Pain or discomfort in the stomach, one or both arms, back, shoulder, neck or jaw Shortness of breath Sweating, often a cold, clammy sweat Nausea or lightheadedness

Misunderstanding Beneficiary Designations. Beneficiary designations can have unintended consequences if misunderstood. Beneficiary designations override the directions left in your will or trust. They also do not allow flexibility for unforeseen changes like a child who predeceases you, which can leave grandchildren disinherited.

Failing to Plan for Disability. Not taking the steps necessary to plan for a possible mental disability can create significant problems for those who will be responsible for taking care of you. Caring for a person with a disability is hard enough, but having to overcome the legal challenges caused by a lack of planning can simply be overwhelming during your disability, and increase complexity upon your death. Not Communicating with Your Family. Communication is critical to having a successful transition upon your disability or death. Failing to share information or to discuss matters or plans with your family puts everyone at a disadvantage. Have the conversation with your family before you become disabled and prior to your death. Sharing openly with your family may be the single largest component in producing a smooth settlement upon your death. Don't let your family be the horror story everyone talks about when they get together for coffee. Take the steps necessary to avoid these common mistakes so that your loved ones don’t experience additional complications when you die.

Our community promotes strong environmental stewardship. We imposed a .25% sales tax years ago so we could enjoy our precious 5200+ acres of open space and our 250+ miles of trails. Ironically, the city now has more miles of trails than city streets. We strive diligently to offer residents eclectic shopping options with our fine stores at Flatirons Shopping Mall, and new specialty stores like Jax Merchantile. Soon we will have an Ikea Department store. We look forward to a new retail component taking shape this year at our Civic Center and are excited to see what type of culinary delights we might be fortunate to savor there. We continue to work collaboratively with our neighbors on regional transportation initiatives and were elated to accomplish a state of the art multi-modal transportation solution on the US 36 corridor. We were awarded funding to plan a Hwy 7 Bus Rapid Transit corridor. Additionally, we have obtained all right of ways needed for the Northwest Parkway extension to the Jefferson Parkway, which will eventually encircle the entire metro area with a highway loop. We are working hard to kick off our new science park complete with a STEM school and several renowned organizations coming to Broomfield. Our schools are consistently ranked high and provide a solid educational foundation for our youth. Our community is blessed to have many philanthropic organizations within our 33 square miles which greatly contribute to the well-being of our citizens. I invite you to get involved in your chosen community in one of these city-wide volunteer organizations, joining thousands of dedicated fellow residents. I welcome you to our city and hope you will join us as we make this an even better livable and safe community.

Healthcare Options Expand to Meet Needs of Growing Community By Dan Powers
No one looks forward to surgery or puts several hours in their weekly planner for visits to hospitals. However, when life’s accidents and aches take over, we’re lucky to have numerous stateof-the-art hospitals, emergency rooms, treatment centers, and specialists’ offices within and around Broomfield. Take note: although there’s a consistent level of expertise and quality for us to choose from, various health providers have areas of focus and specialty worth understanding in advance. From online emergency room wait times and check-ins, to classes, workshops, and phone-in assistance, Broomfield residents have a wide range of health resources in our neighborhoods and nearby.

UCHealth UCHealth offers several locations for patient treatment; one of the strengths they emphasize is the benefit of their healthcare network. For emergency medical conditions, UCHealth’s Emergency Room by Huron at 875 W. 136th Ave. offers the same level of care you find in a hospital, including doctors and nurses who are board certified in emergency medicine, plus advanced diagnostic equipment that you won’t find in a walk-in clinic. In addition, UCHealth Broomfield Hospital has an emergency room, operating rooms, and a full radiology suite. CEO Derek Rushing said their goal is to provide great care and customer service close to where people work and live so they can get back to their lives and families. “We can really take care of a vast majority of clinical needs here,” said Derek. “With resources like a great ER, in-patient services, operating rooms, full-service lab, pharmacy on-site, and radiology lab – we can tie that into the larger UC Health network of facilities if you need follow-up care or potentially a higher level of care. We have an integrated electronic medical records systems, so if you’ve been to another location and have a history of treatment, such as x-rays, blood work, even surgeries, our doctors can quickly access your medical history, enhancing their ability to take care of you.”
St. Anthony North Health Campus Built on the pillars of convenience, wellness, and person-centered care, the St. Anthony North Health Campus at 14300 Orchard Parkway in Westminster provides comprehensive primary and specialty care, diagnostics, labs, and Level III emergency care, plus a full range of inpatient and outpatient services. However, with a proactive preventative philosophy of wellness, St. Anthony North provides resources and more personalized care options than most people realize. To go beyond the immediate needs borne of accidental or emergency injuries, they offer a range of structured, proactive programs ranging from nutrition classes to one-on-one birth-by-design consultations to a free online health information library. As they say, “The power to learn more about health and wellness is in your hands” – with answers and details on questions regarding symptoms, specialty treatments, women’s health, and more. “We want people to live healthy lives and we are there as the best resource offering numerous health centers in the area,” said Communications Manager Dan Werzen. “Our 84th Avenue Neighborhood Health Center is the first mental health crises stabilization unit in Colorado and our behavioral health staff is integrated with our ER services to help smooth transitions for people in a mental health crisis. Plus our primary care physicians offer extended hours and many provide integrated medicine – massage, acupuncture, etc – into their treatments. We also focus on gastroenterology issues: the diagnosis and treatment of digestive tract diseases including conditions of the colon, gallbladder, stomach, liver, esophagus, and pancreas.”
Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center The Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center on Hwy 287 north of E-470 in Lafayette is built on the traditions of two of the most respected hospitals in the Denver metro area: Saint Joseph Hospital and Lutheran Medical Center. Premier services include Level II Trauma, Cancer Centers of Colorado, a heart and neurovascular center, a Primary Stroke Center, the Center for Integrative Medicine, a “baby-friendly” birthing center, and emergency services, including a Senior Emergency Room. Located on 77 acres, there are walking trails, mountain views, water features, natural xeriscaping, and a central Healing Garden as part of the atmosphere of treatment, wellness, and recovery. “The kiddos can stay near home while we help them without having to be transferred to another facility, which is just an awesome way to reduce stress as they are healing.” They offer more than 20 outpatient services, typically MondayFriday, such as Orthopedics, Sports Therapy, Allergy Services, Cardiology, Ear Nose & Throat, and more. With a background in emergency nursing, Amy prompts people to recognize why it’s important for parents and caregivers to recognize the benefits of going to a pediatric care facility: “Every person a family interacts with, from registration to nurses to doctors to specialists have additional, focused skills in dealing with kids. We can present information, provide treatment based on their ages, and issues that are specific to children.”

Attack the Flu
Attacks You
Before It By Kristen Beckman
When it comes to fighting illness during winter’s cold and flu season, your best defense is a good offense. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu season peaks in the United States between late November and March. The impact of the flu varies each year, but millions of people come down with the flu annually. During last year’s flu season, the CDC estimated there were 25 million cases of influenza in the United States. Other viral illnesses also affect millions during the winter months, ranging from the common cold to the often more serious respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, which can cause severe respiratory distress in children and the elderly. To reduce the severity of influenza and minimize complications, the CDC recommends that everyone 6 months or older get the annual flu vaccination. Beyond that, preventing the spread of the virus through personal hygiene and proactively disinfecting surfaces where the virus might live are the best ways to protect yourself from the flu and other viruses.
Personal Hygiene
We learn from an early age that frequent hand washing is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of viruses. The CDC recommends frequently washing your hands with soap and water whenever possible or using alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water isn’t available. In addition, touching your face is an easy way to introduce viruses to your system, so avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth throughout the day, and be careful to cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing to avoid spreading germs. If you do become sick, stay home until 24 hours after your fever is gone and limit contact with others as much as possible.
Disinfecting Basics
In addition to protecting your body from the onslaught of germs in the air, you can also minimize the risk of catching a virus by disinfecting surfaces that may be harboring germs. Viruses can live on surfaces like doorknobs for up to 8 hours, according to the CDC, so consistent cleaning is a must to reduce the prevalence of germs on commonly used surfaces at home and work. Influenza viruses can be destroyed by heat as well as several chemicals, including chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, detergents, iodine-based antiseptics, and alcohols. Direct sunlight or light from an ultraviolet-C device can also be effective in killing viruses on surfaces, according to recommendations on the CDC’s website. While viruses may live on just about any surface in your home or office, there are a few surfaces and objects that you should concentrate your sanitizing efforts on because they are both germ friendly and frequently used, making them ideal vehicles to spread viruses. According to WebMD.com, several household surfaces harbor viruses and should receive special disinfecting attention, including landline and cellular phones, TV remotes, bathroom faucets and towels, tables in all rooms, computers, stuffed animals, and linens. Office surfaces that should be regularly cleaned include telephones, doorknobs, elevator buttons, lunch areas, countertops, copiers, computers, and any other surface that is used frequently by multiple people throughout the day.

Winter Foods That Keep Your
Skin Beautiful By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS
W
e might not spend as much time outdoors or in the sun during winter but our skin can still experience wear and tear during these cold months. Often we might think of how food can make us feel and look from a physical and weight perspective but eating certain foods can have an impact on our skin’s overall health and appearance too. Though fruits and vegetables might not be as plentiful as in the summer months, there are still a variety of in-season winter foods that can help keep your skin looking beautiful. Citrus fruits are in season during the winter and are excellent for your skin. Grapefruits taste great right now and the pink variety are especially beneficial due to their lycopene content. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant and carotenoid, or plant pigment, that gives fruits and vegetables their bright colors. Studies have shown that lycopene may help keep your skin sty smooth. Megan Townsend, a Physician Assistant at Flatirons Dermatology in Broomfield, who also has a Bachelor’s of Science in Nutrition and Food Science, states another beneficial quality. “Citrus foods contain vitamin C which is important for collagen formation. If you notice you are bruising easily, getting enough vitamin C may help this.” Often we think of greens being associated with summer salads. However, some greens, such as kale, collards, and mustard greens, are still readily available even during the colder months. These greens are great for your skin as they are high in antioxidants and vitamin K. Antioxidants help slow down the process of aging and vitamin K helps protect the skin’s elasticity. Another very tasty winter food high in antioxidants are pomegranates. Pomegranates have
26
THE BROOMFIELDER™ FEBRUARY 2017
many benefits to the skin including cell regeneration. The fruit and oil from the seeds help strengthen the outer layer and repair deeper layers of the skin. Megan promotes other foods, that are not specific to the winter but still great for our skin, “One food most of us don't get enough of is fatty fish, such as wild salmon, which contain essential fatty acids that help decrease inflammation. If you aren't eating fatty fish twice a week, it is a good idea to take a quality fish oil supplement daily. Make sure the supplement lists the amounts of EPA and DHA individually to be sure you are getting your money's worth.” Inflammation can keep our skin from looking its best. Megan continues, “If you are trying to decrease inflammation, avoiding simple sugars and focusing on whole grains, fruits and vegetables is important. A great way to get in a variety of veggies and grains this time of year is to make soups and stews with squash and barley. Soups are also a great way to sneak in extra fluids for hydration. It is just as important to get plenty of fluids in the winter to help hydrate the skin.” Though in today’s supermarket we are really able to get many foods year round, eating in-season foods ensures that the fruits and vegetables taste the best because ideally they have been naturally ripened and harvested at the right time. Harvesting at the ideal time will allow for more nutrients because the produce has not been stored for a period of time allowing some nutrients to decline. In-season foods are also often less expensive! Keep your skin looking great this winter by enjoying a variety of in-season fruits and vegetables.

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Arrange tomatoes, squash, pepper, and onion on rimmed baking sheets; season generously with salt and pepper. Roast vegetables until edges are lightly charred and juices are released, about 15 minutes. Pour juices into a heatproof bowl as needed. Warm a large stockpot over medium heat; add a splash of olive oil and garlic. Sauté garlic until fragrant; do not allow to brown. Add roasted vegetables and reserved liquid from vegetables. Simmer gently for about 10 minutes until flavors blend and vegetables are nicely softened. Using a blender (be careful when pureeing hot liquids!), blend mixture into a smooth puree. Strain if desired. Return to stockpot; taste and adjust for seasoning. Add more liquid as necessary until ideal consistency is reached. Garnish with fresh basil and a splash of cream; serve with toasted garlic croutons or crostini.

Holy Family Plans to Expand in the Near Future By Kendall Holmes
Starting with its student population and stretching to the physical edges of the campus, every element of Holy Family High School currently sits on the brink of a mass renovation. Presently, the humble Holy Family building accommodates just more than 600 students. However, with a limited number of classrooms, athletic facilities, and resources for the arts, the school’s population is bursting at the seams. Fortunately, the school has a plan; not only do they want to make the school bigger, Photo Credit: Skylar Gardner but they aim to make it better in every way. From Tragedy to True Love By Charly Frisk
Recently, Holy Family High School auditioned actors and actresses for the spring musical, Beauty and The Beast. The thespians believe the musical will prove a striking contrast to their fall production, Macbeth. The Shakespearean play Macbeth consists of a murderous, tragic plot that included scenes of gushing blood dripping from a murderer’s hand, possessed witches singing in an eerie unison, and vengeful fights complete with metal swords. However, now the thespians must transition from a horror story to a happy ending. To save money and to reuse materials for the set of Beauty and the Beast, the Holy Family tech crew decided to reuse elements of the Macbeth set, namely the castle, for the spring musical; however, the pieces will undergo a major renovation. “The set design is going to be more like the Fiddler on The Roof set (another past Holy Family production), but it will be combining some pieces of the Macbeth castle. We will be making changes to have lighter, happier vibes,” said senior Bernadette Harney, the stage manager. “Macbeth was very gloomy. It was kind of 50 shades of dark gray, but Beauty and the Beast will be 50 shades lighter— much more colorful, yellow, and bright,” said senior Melissa La, who heads the set designers. The actors also know that they must undergo changes and learn how to persist through the transition to the much lighter, family-oriented spring production. “We will have to be aware. We have to know the factors that go into our characters. I think that it might be easy to transition to such a cheesy, romantic story,”

said senior Carlena Lim, who was cast as Babette in Beauty and the Beast. Some of the thespians believe the change to be more difficult and decided to pull from their own life to create their character to ease the transition by including familiarity. “Beauty and the Beast is a change. Big time. I just know that I will have to start smiling more. Just like my last role, I will have to take elements from my life. However, I will be pulling from the joys of my life,” said castmember senior Raymond French. Junior Avery Martinez, who will grace the stage in the lead role of Belle this spring, explained that “Shakespeare is all about tragedy, but princesses are all about happy endings. We are just going to need a lot of positivity and the support of everyone in the cast. If everyone helps out each other and works it will be much easier.” Beauty and the Beast comes alive in the Holy Family theater this spring with evening performances Apr. 5-8 and special matinée performances Apr. 8 and 9.

New Year, New Sports Ambitions By Casey Griggs
The start of the new year brings with it the start of winter sports league play. Holy Family competes in the 4A Tri-Valley league in basketball and the 3A Northern league for wrestling. What are the Heart of Broomfield Awards?

This month, The Broomfielder™ sat down with Karen Smith, executive director of the Broomfield Community Foundation, to learn about BCF’s annual Heart of Broomfield Awards. This year’s event takes place Monday, April 3 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Omni Interlocken Resort.

The Heart of Broomfield Awards recognize those who have made significant contributions to the Broomfield community. The annual awards are a very inspirational and uplifting event, whether or not you know any of the recipients.
What is special about the event? The event starts with a social networking time, which is a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old friends and hopefully meet new ones. After the social time we’ll announce the award recipients. The previous year’s winners select this year’s, so it’s truly an inspiring collection of amazing people. In addition to recognizing Heart of Broomfield winners, the event also recognizes the past year’s grant and scholarship recipients. It is so heartwarming to hear about the difference that BCF funding made in these people’s lives. BCF also recently underwent a major rebranding, so we’re celebrating that accomplishment too and are excited to show off our “new look” to the community.
How do the proceeds benefit the community? Proceeds from the event and donations to the Broomfield Community Foundation stay within the local area; one of BCF’s guiding principles is that donors don’t give to the Foundation, they give to their community through the Foundation. The Foundation’s ultimate goal is to connect people with causes that meet the needs of neighbors through caring, compassion, and charitable giving. The Foundation accomplishes this through a variety of avenues, including grants and scholarships. Grants have been awarded since 1994 and the money is only used for programs and services that enhance the quality of life in Broomfield. In 2015, the Foundation awarded more than $100,000 to local organizations, including the Broomfield Symphony, Bal Swan Children’s Center, and many more.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ FEBRUARY 2017
How can the community get involved? The best ways to get involved are to nominate someone for an award and to attend the ceremony. Nominations are due February 10 and there are ten different categories you can nominate in. We want to showcase those people who are involved in various issues within the community and who make Broomfield such a great place to live.
Where can we learn more? Visit our website at www.broomfieldfoundation.org, and remember to submit your nominations by February 10. Nomination forms and ticket information, as well as a complete list of past winners, can be found on our website. We hope to see you on April 3!

Take care of your heart.. so you can take care of the ones you love. Women’s risk of heart disease is greater than men. Did you know cold sweats, unusual tiredness, anxiety and loss of appetite may not have anything to do with your hormones or getting older?
