FROM THE

CodeRED

What You Need to Know

I

picked a Thursday in early January to work from home and try to get caught up on multiple open tasks in the quiet of my home office. I got a very early start – around 6:00 a.m. – so by 11:00 a.m. I was ready for a little break and opened a browser to Facebook for some social diversion. One of the first posts on my feed was an alert from the Broomfield Police Department about a “Shelter in Place” order for my neighborhood. The incident of the day was a police pursuit that wound through several neighborhoods in the northwestern section of the Denver metro area and ended in a crash in Broomfield just outside the Trails neighborhood – where I live. The suspect then escaped on foot and was at large in the area – possibly armed. I sat for the next two hours locked in my home, peeking through the curtains, and listening to a helicopter circle overhead. As the search area widened (information I learned via social media), I wondered if the suspect had left my neighborhood. But that helicopter kept coming back. It is a good thing I completed a lot of work in the morning because through the rest of the ordeal I was quite distracted – gathering what information I could from Twitter, Facebook, local media sources, and Nextdoor, and chatting on the phone with my parents across town who were trying to keep me calm. The suspect was eventually safely apprehended in a backyard about four doors down and across the street from my house. The swift and coordinated response by our Broomfield Police Department, the Westminster Police Department, and the Adams County Sheriff, was commendable. Early into the incident, I (and anyone else with a landline in the affected area) received a Reverse 9-1-1 call about the situation. Part of the social media chatter throughout the event included concerns from residents who were not alerted to the event and did not know that it had occurred. Some had not received a Reverse 9-1-1 and wondered how information was being shared.

Here is what you need to know to about CodeRED to remain informed about future emergency events in Broomfield. From the broomfield.org website: CodeRED® (similar to Reverse 9-1-1®), is a public safety tool that provides emergency notification to residents of impending dangers. Traditional landline phones through companies such as CenturyLink and Comcast are entered into the 9-1-1 database and dialed automatically. CodeRED® will not call a cell phone or VoIP system phone unless it has been registered. Cell phone and VoIP users residing in the City and County of Broomfield should register their phone number(s) at your911.net to ensure they receive emergency messages. So sign up today! And thank you to our local Public Safety organizations for the great job they do in Broomfield.

Before finding this program, my neuropathy had gotten worse after years of shots, drugs, more drugs and surgeries. I could not drive, shop or even stand at the sink to do dishes. I knew this program was going to be the answer because it heals the nerves instead of just covering up the pain. Now I can shop, walk further, stand longer and the pain is greatly reduced. I recommend this program to anyone with Neuropathy.” ~ Lori

I used to have debilitating pain, numbness and loss of balance from neuropathy in my feet that had me confined to a wheelchair most of the time. After just two months of treatment, I have gotten rid of my wheelchair, packed away my cane and I am once again able to walk and even exercise without pain. I have my life back. This treatment has been worth every penny.” ~ A Blueprint patient with Peripheral Neuropathy caused by Chemotherapy.

HAPPENINGS

COMMUNITY MARCH 03 Don’t miss the event of the season! Plan to attend the 2018 Bal Swan Ball at 5:00 p.m., at the 1STBank Center in Broomfield. The Bal Swan Ball is Broomfield’s longest standing fundraising event, started in 1963, and is attended each year by more than 500 guests including many people associated with Bal Swan Children’s Center, community and corporate leaders, elected officials, and residents from Broomfield and the surrounding area. Bal Swan Children’s Center is a preschool that provides a welcoming environment for children of diverse backgrounds and abilities. Building on each child’s strengths and successes, the Center provides early intervention therapies and education services for children from infancy through six years of age. The annual Bal Swan Ball includes a silent and live auction, dinner, live music, dancing, and non-cash gambling. Attendees wear anything from a tuxedo or ball gown to a themed costume which makes for a fun, festive, and interesting event. This year’s theme is Bal Swan Ball: Casino Royale with many event surprises planned! Mobile bidding will be used for the auctions and guests can also prepurchase $200 in “fun money” for just $20, for use in gaming throughout the evening. A room block has been secured at the Aloft Hotel at the discounted cost of $110 per room. Make sure to ask for the Bal Swan Room Block. Proceeds from the Bal Swan Ball support therapy services and preschool programming at Bal Swan Children’s Center. For more information and to buy your tickets, visit www.balswan.org.

FEBRUARY 10 Having residents trained in hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is one of the best ways North Metro Fire Rescue District can improve the survival rate of cardiac arrest patients. That’s why North Metro Fire is offering free Family and Friends® CPR classes on February 10 at the District’s Headquarters at 101 Spader Way in Broomfield. According to the American Heart Association, of the more than 1,000 people who go into cardiac arrest outside of the hospital every day, only one in 10 survives. If a victim receives CPR immediately after going into arrest, their chances of survival increase by two to three times. As part of the Family and Friends® CPR class, participants will watch an instructional video and get to practice hands-only compressions on CPR mannequins under the supervision of North Metro firefighters. They will also learn how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) to help revive a potential cardiac arrest victim. While the class does not offer a CPR certification card, participants will leave knowing how to deliver potentially lifesaving CPR to anyone. To sign up for the two-hour Family and Friends® CPR course, visit www.nmfr.org/cpr or call North Metro Fire Headquarters at 303-252-3017. Classes will be offered at 9:00 a.m., noon, and 3:00 p.m. While registration is preferred, walk-in participants are welcome to attend if there is space in the class. Classes are open to all ages at no charge thanks in part to donated equipment from Mile-High RETAC.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ FEBRUARY 2018

Mary had been through so much with Bill’s illness. After almost a year, it had taken him from her. Then came the accident. As Mary turned off the highway she was struck by a young driver. His serious injury seemed to be entirely his own fault, until a lawsuit convinced a jury that Mary’s turn signals were not working properly, shifting legal liability to her. The resulting claim far exceeded her auto insurance limits, and even after the insurance paid $1,000,000 to the injured driver, she was staring at a court judgment of more than $800,000. Her lawyer told her their savings and Bill’s life insurance proceeds were going to be wiped out, and a lien would be placed on the family home. Mary was looking at bankruptcy. Then she learned the good news. Bill and Mary had sought legal advice when they first learned of his illness. The first lawyer they spoke with said they did not need estate planning. He told them to just “Put everything in joint tenancy.” They weren’t comfortable with that advice, and sought advice from a counseling oriented attorney who took the time to learn more about them, their estate, and their goals. Bill’s primary objective was to protect Mary when he died. As Mary was winding up Bill’s affairs, she realized that upon his death, their savings, his life insurance and the home would not come directly to her in her own name, but would be put in trust. Mary would control the trust, but it would protect the assets from legal claims. While he had no idea what claims might arise, Bill’s foresight was now going to really pay off. If you would like to learn more about an effective estate planning process that is producing results for families, attend one of our complementary workshops.

The 2nd Annual Broomfield Brain Trust Trivia Night will be held February 23, at the Chateaux at Fox Meadows, at 13600 Xavier Lane in Broomfield. Last year, more than 100 of the most cognitive, competitive trivia buffs, on 17 teams of six, competed for the Broomfield Brain Trust Trophy. Teams including the Broomfield Brainiacs, GI Joes & a Jane, Dragons, Brainy Bunch, Mother Frackers, CK Mate, Bad News Bears, Mental Giants, Useless Facts R Us, and The Gray Matters were sponsored by local businesses, schools, charities, and individuals, to compete in the event. North Metro region have an excellent resource at St. Anthony North Health Campus Center (SANHC). I strongly recommend this two-phase strategy to my patients who are at risk of heart disease, as well as those who have experienced a heart attack and want to avoid a recurrence. I asked certified cardiac rehabilitation nurse Julia Day what she would like Broomfielder readers to know about the program. Her response: “How individualized it is. Our goal is to help each person regain both physical stamina and the confidence that’s lessened with a serious incident such as heart attack. We have a great team — nurses, exercise physiologists, wellness coaches, dietitians — working together to help every patient succeed. For those who smoke or are dealing with diabetes, we have specialized counseling and classes. And we deal directly with the mood changes common to cardiac incidents. “For all participants, the early phases of activity are fully monitored, allowing them to become comfortable with increased exertion. One of the bonuses is the level of support participants receive from each other. It becomes a journey they’re taking together, and we’re pleased to provide the compass.” Cardiologist Lawrence Lazar, MD, is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine, Interventional Cardiology and Echocardiography. He sees patients at the St. Anthony North Health Campus, 14300 Orchard Parkway, Westminster, 80023. To learn more about Heart and Vascular services, visit centura.org/heart. STAYING

HEALTHY IN WINTER By Elizabeth Buckingham

Mid-winter – especially post-holiday – often brings fragile immune systems, lethargy, and exhaustion, or the “seasonal blues.” Chilly days combined with limited natural sunlight leave us feeling tired, irritable, moody, and generally out-of-sorts, plus we’re usually dealing with financial and physical holiday hangovers, too. To combat this seasonal mood shift, make a few simple changes to your daily routine that will make a world of difference in your mental, physical, and emotional health.

DIET The quality of your diet has a huge impact on your overall health, and even more so in winter when your system might be struggling. Our bodies work best when their natural defenses are at their strongest, and that might take a little extra effort on your part: this time of year, add extra fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C to your diet. A powerful antioxidant, vitamin C also strengthens your immune system and helps you fight off colds and viruses going around. Pomegranates, kiwifruit, and citrus, in season through winter’s darkest days, contain lots of vitamin C (as well as many other beneficial nutrients) and can be added to salads, used to top warming winter porridges or simply eaten fresh. Bell peppers, leafy greens, and broccoli are all high in vitamin C and can be used in a variety of savory and warming foods. Many herbal teas also contain vitamin C; add fresh lemon to boost the nutrition even more. While you can take Vitamin C supplements, as with all nutrients you’re better off obtaining these from a diet rich in whole foods, rather than from tablets, powders, and pills.

20

THE BROOMFIELDER™ FEBRUARY 2018

HAND WASHING Wash your hands with hot water and regular soap as often as possible. Study after study has shown that repeated hand washing is absolutely the best single defense against germs and will help keep you healthy. You don’t need fancy antibacterial soaps – standard bar soap and plenty of hot water will do the trick. Frequent hand washing is a good idea year-round, but even more so in the winter when more time is spent indoors and in closer contact with people who might be sick. Remember that your phone and computer are your biggest sources of germs – swab with rubbing alcohol regularly!

CONGESTION If you’re congested, place your face over a pot of simmering water, drape a towel over your head and inhale. The steam may help clear your congestion; alternatively, heat a damp washcloth in the microwave for thirty seconds and place the warm compress on inflamed sinuses. If your nose is rubbed raw, dab a salve of menthol, eucalyptus, or camphor around your nostrils to soothe irritated skin. If a scratchy throat ails you, make a solution of half a teaspoon of salt with eight ounces of warm water and gargle as needed. Keep hydrated with lots of water and stay warm, too; starting your day with hot water and lemon can provide a fresh, non-caffeinated boost.

EXERCISE It’s hard to get motivated when it’s freezing, but get as much exercise as possible, preferably outside if you’re bundled up properly. We often struggle during winter due to lower light levels, which cause a drop in vitamin D and serotonin. If you’re able, get into the sun for at least a few minutes each day – not only is the exercise good for you physically, but it’s also good for you mentally. A brisk walk, even for only twenty minutes, can do wonders for your mood and energy.

R&R Finally, if you are ill, know when to stay home. Spreading infection to your colleagues isn’t the best way to make friends, and pushing yourself when you need to rest may cause your illness to stay longer than it otherwise would. And remember to always cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow, rather than your hands. We spray germs up to six feet away when we cough or sneeze, but covering our face with our hands means that we’ll contaminate everything we touch. Coughing or sneezing into your elbow is healthier for you and everyone around you.

The only way we can feel and perform at our best is to take good care of our precious bodies. This winter, make an extra commitment to yourself to eat well, exercise, and get adequate sleep – and you’ll be amazed at how much stronger you’ll feel.

Important Things You Can Do for Your Health Right Now By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS

As we enter February, many people are still going strong on their New Year’s Resolutions, while others’ motivation has started to wane. Many start January very motivated with lofty goals only to find themselves six weeks into the year feeling defeated and the motivation gone. We often start a new year so vigorous that the pace is almost unrealistic to keep. “I will not eat sugar ever again.” Or “I will workout every day in 2018.” Though these are very admirable, they are also fairly unrealistic. If you feel like you have not stuck to your resolutions already at this point, you can always revamp them to make them work for you. One of the keys to behavior change is to keep trying and staying consistent. Small changes can also make a big difference. Here are some of the most important things you can do for your health right now, to keep that new year motivation all year long.

1. 22

“Not everything has to be done on your own,” said Chad Johnson, owner/head trainer at Obstacle Destruction Personal Training in Broomfield. “Surround yourself with good, supportive people whether it's family, friends or a trainer. Your physical health is very dependent on your mental health and if you have the right mindset, including the outside sources to help you keep that focus, a healthier you is already in the works.” Research shows that we often have similar behaviors as our close friends and family. If your spouse and close friends eat healthily and are active, you are also more likely to have similar habits.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ FEBRUARY 2018

2.

When it comes to goal setting, Chad advises to “set detailed goals.” If your goal is to lose 10 pounds, associate a reason and purpose with losing the weight. Maybe you want to lose weight so you feel better overall or maybe you want to fit into a different size clothing or maybe you think losing the weight will help you run a mile without stopping. “All goals need to have purpose for you,” he said. Setting a timeline for a goal can also be helpful to keep you on track.

: s l a Go

3.

Changing eating habits can be one of the hardest behavior changes to make. Again, little steps can add up. Chad suggests, “Don’t go from 0 to 100. Instead, take a week and change just one or two things about your nutritional habits, then the next week, add one or two more changes and continue on that path. As you gradually do things your mind and body will adapt easier and you're more likely to stick with the adjustments you've made. With these simple changes you'll also start to see improvements in how you feel. You feel better, you become more motivated.”

4.

Every person is different and there is no one size fits all diet or exercise program for everyone. You have to find a plan that works for you. He said, “we’re all creatures of habit and convenience, so create a schedule based off your natural tendencies and what's easiest for you to get to. Pick a time of day that you know you're more inclined to be active. Don't try and force yourself into being an early morning workout person if you typically like to do things after work. Also find a place that you don't have to struggle to get to because there's already plenty of other 'obstacles' getting in your way throughout the day. Literally put it on your calendar and commit that time to yourself at a place that works for you.” Once you start getting into the habit of exercising at a certain time and place, the routine should hopefully become easier and part of your weekly routine.

Even if you feel that you have already fallen off the resolution wagon, it is never too late to start. You do not have to wait until next January or even next Monday. To view The Broomfielder™ online visit: www.loudmouthmedia.com

Broomfield Offering

Diabetes Prevention Program By Donald King

Could I be at risk for Diabetes? If you have asked yourself this question, there is an easy way to find out. To start, you can take a two-minute quiz at https:// doihaveprediabetes.org. If you are at risk for Type 2 Diabetes, you have a one in four chance of developing Type 2 Diabetes, a disease that doubles your chance of heart attack, stroke, and Alzheimer’s, along with a variety of other devastating health issues. The good news is that Broomfield is taking effective action to help. With 1.5 million pre-diabetics in Colorado, the City and County of Broomfield has engaged the Wellness Journey Partnership, a professional coaching business here in Broomfield, to offer the Center for Disease Control and Prevention sponsored Diabetes Prevention Program. Classes are held at the Paul Derda Recreation Center at various times during the week through the end of the year. The healthcare cost to support someone with Type 2 Diabetes is more than $13,000 per year - double the annual

healthcare cost of a healthy person. These costs are in addition to some of the other personal health and wellness issues that can come along with this serious disease. The cost of the Diabetes Prevention Program classes is approximately $36 per month, and in some cases, insurance will pay for the program. Avoiding Type 2 Diabetes is well worth the investment for yourself and your loved ones who want you to have a great quality of life. The Diabetes Prevention Program has proven successful in helping nearly 60% of pre-diabetics reduce their “at risk” state. If you are over age 60, your success rate climbs to 70%, while treatment with medication alone has shown only a 31% success rate (and carries none of the other physical benefits derived from the program). The Program stresses a shared experience between 10-12 people in each group sharing their weight loss, exercise, and healthy eating struggles and successes during the program. Groups are facilitated by a certified lifestyle coach.

PUBLIC HEALTH A Broomfield Priority By Bette Erickson

P

ublic health is a multi-faceted discipline ranging from disease prevention to health promotion, and environmental health to critical data collection, and nearly everything conceivable in between. Broomfield’s Department of Public Health sees it all. Located in the new Health and Human Services building at 100 Spader Way, the Public Health Department is led by Jason Vahling. With a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Northern Colorado and a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science, as Broomfield’s Director of Public Health, Vahling is ideally suited for the important role. Over a leisurely coffee early last month in a HHS conference room, he described some of what he does and, more importantly, why it matters. What follows is a brief transcript of our conversation:

26

THE BROOMFIELDER™ FEBRUARY 2018

Q: How long have you worked for Broomfield’s Public Health Department? A: “I worked for the State of Colorado for 12 years in many capacities,

managing large public health programs before coming to Broomfield four years ago. I love it here. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.” He and his wife are raising a blended family with three kids. Vahling grew up in Westminster and spent much time in Broomfield as a child and young adult. Q: What would you say is your job description?

A: “It’s a pleasure to work with such an amazing team. I provide leadership but the team deserves most of the credit.” His team works on programs including nursing, environmental health programs, vital records, and health promotion programs, and more recently, oil and gas inspections, he said.

Q: How is the Public Health Department connected to oil and gas? A: “We’re finding oil companies want to be in compliance,” he adds. The

list of the department's responsibilities goes on, covering everything from emergency preparedness to disease control programs. “We consider, for instance, how a major crisis would impact the entire community. Whether it’s

INITIATIVES There are numerous worthwhile initiatives ongoing at Broomfield’s Public Health department and throughout the community. A keyword search of “Be Healthy Broomfield” on the www.broomfield.org website yields dozens of programs in which interested residents may participate, including:

Reducing the stigma of mental health

Pregnancy-related issues

Substance abuse education and prevention

Sugary beverages and tobacco-cessation programs

Nursing services, including vaccines and a travel clinic

Obesity education, prevention, and lifestyle support

Environmental health programs

anthrax or a disease outbreak.” The department must be prepared. He adds with a bit of humor, “And we hope it’s not at 4:00 p.m. on a Friday.”

Q: How many employees make up the Public Health Department? A: With some 20 employees, the department is continually reviewing its goals

and objectives. “We are asking ongoing questions regarding what we may be lacking and what does it take to get us at capacity to meet all of the various needs in the public health programs we offer.” The multiple programs Broomfield Public Health offers are robust, accessible, and most are free of charge.

Q: What do you currently see as top priorities regarding public health? A:“What we’ve seen from the data and community conversations is a desire

to move to programs that impact the entire population in obesity prevention, substance abuse, and mental health. These are not areas we are required to set as priorities, but looking at data and residents’ requests in the past, those are a few we focus on.”

all Broomfield’s social media accounts. These offer information regarding upcoming campaigns and events and educational information about how to live a better, healthier, and more successful life.

Q: Is there a typical day in the life of a public health director?

A: “There is no typical day in public health, so the experience is really exciting because I get to look at all these broad initiatives and serve as the chief health strategist for the city and county.” Vahling explained his role is to really look at current trends, study available data, and collaborate with other departments to offer integrated services.

For instance, the City and County of Broomfield’s social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook) titled BhealthyBroomfield get the most attention of

HOW TO COOK BETTER:

A Professional Chef’s

TOP 10 TIPS By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham

Maybe 2018 is the year you decided you’re going to learn to cook. If so, congratulations! There is literally no one single thing you can do to improve both your physical and financial health other than cooking at home. When learning a new skill, however, it’s easy to become disheartened when you encounter setbacks or don’t see immediate results. Take it from a professional chef: cooking well doesn’t happen overnight. Like any activity, it takes daily practice to become better, but a few helpful tips will speed you on your way.

1

Read every recipe thoroughly before beginning. Do

Taste as you go. No recipe is designed precisely to your tastes, and ingredients, seasoning, and cooking techniques will always vary. Almost all kitchen errors are fixable, but how will you know what needs fixing unless you taste? Taste, taste, and taste again, and then adjust as needed.

Buy quality knives, learn basic knife skills, and keep your knives sharp. Your time and effort in the

Keep a dish of kosher salt and a pepper grinder near your stove, and use them frequently. The

2

kitchen will improve to an amazing level. Most of cooking is actually prep, and having a couple of good knives makes all the difference. Buy a sturdy wooden cutting board, anchor it firmly to your workspace with a damp kitchen towel, and get chopping.

3

Use your time in the kitchen efficiently and always cook two or three meals ahead. If you’re making a

batch of grains or roasting vegetables, make enough for the week. Cook not just for tonight, but for packed lunches tomorrow.

28

4

you understand all of the ingredients, techniques, preparations, and time involved? Are your expectations realistic? If it’s 5:30 on a Thursday evening and your entire household is hangry, it’s probably not the best time to roast a still-frozen chicken.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ FEBRUARY 2018

5

biggest difference between professional chefs and home cooks is knowing how to season. Season in layers: season the meat before cooking, season the cooking water, season the onions as they sweat, season the grains as they simmer. Food is so much more interesting if it’s been seasoned as it cooks, rather than a flat handful of salt dumped on at the end. Remember that salt is designed to enhance food and make it taste more like itself; it’s not intended to make food taste salty.

6 7

Know your oven: every oven has hot and cool spots, and many ovens’ built-in temperature gauges are inaccurate. Buy an inexpensive oven thermometer, and use it to know whether and where your oven runs hot or cool. Cut any ingredient, whether meat or vegetable, into similar-size pieces. This helps food cook evenly.

Most chicken breasts are thinner at the ends and thicker in the middle; either butterfly the meat (cut open horizontally then flatten like a book) or pound the meat flat to even the thickness.

8

Meat should be at room temperature (and fully thawed) before cooking. This allows the meat to cook evenly, instead

of overcooking the outside while leaving the inside raw.

9

Let your meat rest. When nearly cooked through, turn

off heat and let chicken breasts sit in a covered pan for at least eight to ten minutes. The steam created will help the chicken finish cooking and will keep it moist. Let all meat, including steaks, rest for at least eight to ten minutes after turning off heat and before cutting and/or serving; this allows the meat’s juices to redistribute throughout. All meats will continue to cook for a certain amount of time after removal from heat, so undercook accordingly - you can always return the meat to a hot pan or oven if necessary. When resting, tent meat loosely with foil to preserve heat.

10

Learn to trust your own judgment and your own tastes. You know best what you like, so believe

in your taste buds and have fun cooking!

Above all else, purchase quality ingredients and then treat those ingredients with respect. It took effort to create these raw materials, so take care of them once in your kitchen. Your food will only be as good as the love, care, and quality ingredients you put into it. To view The Broomfielder™ online visit: www.loudmouthmedia.com

FROM THE – DESK OF THE –

MAYOR

Here’s to Our

Health Broomfield!

H

appy New Year residents of Broomfield. As council progresses into 2018, the overall health of our community remains a critical focus. The City and County of Broomfield has a long-standing commitment to focus and support the overall health and wellness of its residents. Broomfield’s recently updated Comprehensive Plan section on Health Care, Public Health, and Human Services outlines six policies with 15 action steps used to look towards the future. Each department within the City and County works to not only fulfill these outlined commitments but also to promote and strengthen all aspects of health and wellness within the community on an ongoing basis. It’s always a good reminder that we became a City and County in 2001 with one of the primary objectives to provide health and human services. With that in mind, here are some new initiatives for 2018:

B-Healthy Broomfield Broomfield’s coalition of internal departments, area nonprofits, and health-focused advocates are working together to implement the Public Health Improvement Plan. So far, the coalition has found great success with breaking down mental health stigma through a media campaign and speaker series, fighting childhood obesity with recreation and sugar reduction partnerships and continuing the long-term campaign to reduce the number of residents who use tobacco.

Public Health A new public health survey will launch in the spring to help shape the next phase of the Public Health Improvement Plan and guide future efforts of the B-Healthy Broomfield Coalition. Also coming this year, Broomfield is partnering with metro-area communities and state lawmakers to curb the opioid crisis in the area while also developing a one-day health forum to discuss health needs in our community.

30

THE BROOMFIELDER™ FEBRUARY 2018

Infrastructure Building infrastructure to support the health and wellness priorities in Broomfield continues in 2018. This summer, crews will embark on building a new Broomfield Community Center which will feature recreation, wellness, and programming activity opportunities for residents. The new facility will compliment various other wellness opportunities including 8,000 acres of preserved open lands, 281 miles of trails, numerous bike lanes (more miles of trails than miles of streets), 45 playgrounds and two aquatic parks, and world class BMX bike facilities at the upcoming McKay Park. Broomfield is also in the process of improving Dillon Road whose east-west connection is vital to the local economy, and hopefully the improvements will minimize some unneeded stress. Also contributing to the overall health of our community, Bromfield remains focused on providing clean resources like water. A vital service is the city’s work to provide clean healthy water and a system to remove waste. In fact, Broomfield treated over 2341.41 million gallons of wastewater in 2016 which is 6.415 million gallons per day. My door is always open and I am eager to communicate with each one of you to explore how, together, we can strengthen and move our community forward in 2018 and beyond to remain a healthy and vibrant community.

New President Talks Next Steps for

Access Broomfield Chamber By Dan Powers

In business, as in life, it’s not just what you know but WHO you know that is a big factor in finding opportunities and success. For the Access Broomfield Chamber’s new leader, helping people connect and “access” the right resources in Broomfield is what fuels his mission to strengthen the economic vitality of the community.

“I

really like people and making connections throughout Broomfield,” said Chamber President & CEO Sam Taylor. “When I took over [in summer 2017] my goal was to provide excitement around the Chamber for the members, provide value to them, and ensure when they give us hard earned money that it benefits them, the membership at large, and the Chamber itself.” Over previous decades Sam has been involved in numerous non-profits and committees. He owned a manufacturing company in the 1990s that was a Chamber member and Sam was also on Broomfield City Council for eight years. “When I was asked to join the Chamber as CEO, I felt I could step in with a good background of experience with the Chamber’s history,” he said. Along with Director of Membership Engagement Tammy Whitaker and an active Board of Directors, the Chamber is energized by its mission of providing value borne of connections, access, and strengthening the fabric of Broomfield through a vibrant local economy. The previous paradigm of the Chamber was “basically a leads group,” said Sam. “You went there, shook hands, handed out business cards, and met people. You opened a business and you joined the Chamber because that’s where you met people to tell about your company. However, that old Chamber model isn’t working. Now with Facebook, LinkedIn, other social media channels, and other digital connectors, there are

32

THE BROOMFIELDER™ FEBRUARY 2018

so many other ways for people to connect.” That said, Sam isn’t convinced social media and technology mean the end of Chambers is inevitable: “The thing is, those are good ways to give information, but you don’t ‘meet’ people. Online isn’t the same as face-to-face. People still want to do business with people they know, people they’ve met.” Sam believes the Chamber exists to give big and small companies the chance meet – to have access – to not simply the business community but also to elected officials, to nonprofits, to organizations, community leaders, and experts from throughout Broomfield. “My goal is to give people in business access,” said Sam. “We are answering the question ‘How do we give you access to the people you need to meet?’” As Sam and Tammy and their

Board hear from members, the answers to that question guide event creation, program themes, member spotlights, and more. Events range from traditional leads group luncheons to ribbon cuttings and anniversaries for businesses, workshops on team building, speaker series, and more. “We’re always looking to create events that are exciting and interesting for our members, things that bring people together,” he said. For example, The Exec Connect Series will bring in C-level speakers: “People can hear from those high-level, local leaders of companies who can share what has worked for them as well as the struggles they faced. We want to hear about how they handled challenges when things didn’t follow their business plan. We also want to connect those local leaders with our members so there’s more of a connection, a face-with-the-companyname” said Sam. The Chamber will have a non-profit focus at each Business After Hours gathering, to spotlight opportunities for companies to engage in that realm. Another program with a connection theme as well as a vision to nurture the next generation of business owners is HYPE - Helping Young Professionals Evolve. Designed for young professionals ages 21-39, HYPE provides business skills training, peer coaching, and networking, and is open to Chamber members and non-members alike. (HYPE Founder Grayson Hofferber with Millennial Wealth Management is also the Chamber Board Chair.) There is also Chamber U, which is a course designed as a learning resource for new members or existing members who would like a fresh perspective on how to get the most from their Chamber membership. Plus the Chamber is part of the Northwest Chamber Alliance, along with the Boulder Chamber and the Longmont Area Chamber. Another phrase that Sam likes to use relates to the age-old phrase Return on Investment: “When it comes to Chamber membership, it’s Return on Involvement,” he said. “The more involved you are in Chamber in the community, the more you get out of it. We’re in the business of giving you access to make things happen.”

HOW TO HOST A

BEER TASTING PARTY By Elizabeth Buckingham

34

THE BROOMFIELDERâ„¢ FEBRUARY 2018

Familiar with the Danish word hygge? It’s pronounced “hue-gah” and it’s all the rage these days. Essentially untranslatable into English, it basically means feelings of comfort, warmth or coziness. It’s not a product you buy, but instead a mood you create, and one of the best ways to create hygge is by inviting guests into your home. This winter, why not embrace hygge and host a wine or beer tasting party?

GUEST LIST & DRINK CHOICE

CONTRIBUTE OR PROVIDE?

Hosting a wine or beer tasting party is fun, easy, and different, plus it livens up the dark, cold, boring post-holiday months. The key is to keep things simple and to help guests learn a thing or two while still having a great time. First, write your guest list; about eight to ten people is just right to keep things lively but not too overwhelming. Decide whether your group is interested more in wine or beer; not everyone has to be a passionate oenophile or hophead, but if you’re hosting a tasting, you definitely want guests who are keen to sample and learn, not just drink and chat. And choose wine or beer, not both.

Determine whether your guests will contribute to the evening’s festivities with a bottle of wine or a six-pack, or whether you’ll select everything. If you’re asking guests to bring something, make sure you’re specific about the evening’s format and the “rules,” so they know what to purchase. If you’re doing all the buying, find a reputable local shop with a great selection, and talk to a knowledgeable staff member. Explain the format of your event, and let them guide you.

CHOOSE A THEME Once you’ve got your guest list and your drink choice sorted, it’s time to decide on a theme. There are lots of ways to choose; for example, you can select wines made in a specific region, such as South Australia or the Burgundy region of France. You could also select wines from around the world but made with the same grape, like chardonnay. Drinking wines made from the same grape but crafted in both New World and Old World regions is often one of the best ways to learn more about wine; a chardonnay from Napa will be quite different from a Chablis from France.

CHOOSE A SPECIFIC STYLE If you’re drinking beer, you might choose a specific style, such as hoppy, floral IPAs, or dark, wintry porters. You could also drink beer from just one state, like Oregon, or even from a state’s microregion, like Hood River. While Colorado obviously leads the nation in microbreweries, there are amazing beers made across the country. Offer no more than five or six different wines or beers to taste; more than that and you risk palate fatigue. (If you’ve attended the Great American Beer Festival, you know what I mean.)

CREATE A CHALLENGE One fun challenge for a wine tasting can be to set a price-per-bottle limit, such as $10, and then vote to determine the crowd favorite. This can be a great way to discover bargain wines that you might otherwise overlook. Buy another bottle of wine and give it away as a prize to the guest with the best-ranked contribution. You can always have a blind tasting, too, where bottles are covered and guests try to guess region, varietal, vintage, style or any combination thereof. This is another fun way to learn more about wine, and more importantly about your own wine-drinking preferences.

SIMPLE FOODS As for food, keep it simple but abundant. A generous cheese and charcuterie board, with plenty of fruit, nuts, olives, and crackers, works perfectly for both beer and wine tastings, and it means minimal work for the host. Make sure to have lots of plain crackers on hand for cleansing the palate between sips, and of course plenty of water. Offer small glasses for the tastes – this isn’t a frat party – and definitely have fun non-alcoholic options, such as craft root beer and sparkling water with pomegranate juice, for the designated drivers. You also might want to provide small notebooks and pens, or print a list of all the evening’s selections on it, so guests can reference it when they’re next at the liquor store.

This winter, try something new and host a beer or wine tasting party. Who knows? Your attempt at hygge might be so much fun that it becomes a monthly event!
