FROM THE

Broomfield’s Heart

Surrounds Us W

hether you have been a part of this community all of your life, just a few years, or even a few months, you don’t have to be here long to see that Broomfield has heart. It is in our organizations, in our schools, in our athletics, in our civic programs, and in our neighborhoods. The air might be crisp and the ground firm with ice, but in the first months of the year, Broomfielder’s hearts heat up! It is the start of the early giving season with several noteworthy events on the calendar including the annual Bal Swan Ball and the Nativity School Fund Gala this month alone. You can read more about both in this month’s calendar in this issue. Also in this issue we feature an article about three nascent Broomfield charitable organizations, all with similar goals but providing opportunities for broad based participation by many of us in the community. The Precious Child Women’s Guild, Guys Who Give, and 100 Women Who Care, are all getting started in Broomfield with clear goals and plans for impact by helping the less fortunate. Learn more about each group’s mission and how to get involved on page 28 Does Valentine’s Day and the season of love have you thinking about someone who inspires you with their giving heart? Do you know someone who often goes unrecognized for their outstanding contributions to the Broomfield community? Now is your chance to give them the recognition they deserve! The Broomfield Community Foundation’s Heart of Broomfield Awards are now accepting nominations. Award Categories include Arts, Education, Community Service, Senior, Youth, Philanthropic, Gene Frank (business), Angel, Heart & Soul, and the Walter P. Spader Leadership Award. Nominations should be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m., Friday, February 15. Forms and details are available online at www.broomfieldfoundation.org. The 2019 Heart of Broomfield Award winners will be honored at a community reception on Monday, April 8, at the Denver Marriott Westminster. Carrying through with ideas of the Heart, in this issue we present ideas to help you better “Love Your Life:” through your home, health, and family. We share ideas for eating better, sleeping better, and living better by decluttering your home, plus thoughts about self-care, what it means, and how to practice it. Thanks for reading The Broomfielder, here and online, and Happy Valentine’s Day.

SELF CARE IS AS IMPORTANT AS CARING FOR OTHERS By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS

The month of February is often thought of as the month of love. Valentine’s Day is the day to celebrate the love we have for others. But what about loving ourselves as well? In our constantly fast-paced and busy world, many forget to practice self care, which is really the ultimate form of loving yourself.

18

THE BROOMFIELDER™ FEBRUARY 2019

S

elf care can have different meanings for each person, but no matter what it means to each individual, taking care of and loving yourself should not be seen as a luxury. It should be something that is practiced consistently and daily. Taking care of yourself allows you to take better care of others. Just as the airline attendants advises, you have to put your oxygen mask on first before putting it on others. Self-care for many might conjure up ideas of expensive spa treatments or vacations but there are plenty of things you can do each day for yourself that do not cost anything. Taking a walk, even if it is only for 10 minutes, has many benefits for the body and mind. Research shows that walking outside, specifically in nature, can help lift mood, reduce stress, and improve energy levels. Not to mention, a walk outside provides a healthy dose of Vitamin D. Walking can also spark creativity and lower the stress hormone cortisol. A hot bath is a simple and luxurious way to show your body some love. Adding some nice bath salts or essential oils can make the bath even more relaxing. Making time for reading, knitting, scrapbooking, listening to music or any other relaxing hobby you enjoy is definitely a form of self-care. Journaling or other forms of mindfulness or meditation can be done anywhere at anytime. Make an effort to make time for these low-cost activities often, as even 10-20 minutes can help you relax, release tension, and feel refreshed. Though many might not think about it, but cooking for yourself is another form of self care. Many people prepare amazing food for their families but will not cook for themselves. Why not? You deserve amazing nutritious food as well. Nourishing your body with a homemade meal gives your body the love it deserves.

For many, spending time with loved ones is a form of self care. Monthly or frequent date nights with a significant other may not always be possible as the cost of childcare and eating out can add up. Instead put the kids to bed, make a nice dinner, grab a glass of wine, and have a date night at home. Trade babysitting with a neighbor and go out for a few hours. Join a book club and commit to having a night out with friends once a month. Though vacations are fun and can be rejuvenating, traveling to amazing destinations is not always possible. Many Americans never use their earned vacation days. Taking days off of work does not mean you have to travel to some far off location. Scheduling a day off for ‘wellness’ or a self-care day as opposed to a sick day can do wonders for the mind, body, and spirit. Take the days that you have earned and show yourself some love. Enjoy a workout or walk outside, schedule lunch with a friend, or relax doing whatever you want to do for a day – which might be nothing. Julie Parmentar, a massage therapist in Broomfield and yoga instructor and Owner of Studio Love in Erie, believes you can show your body self care daily by making sure to get enough sleep, water, and nutritious food. However, she also believes that healthy thoughts are an important piece of loving yourself. “It doesn’t matter so much what you do, but your thoughts surrounding the act. If you are ridden with guilt because you took the time and spent the money on a massage or yoga class or even a small getaway, the toxic thoughts hinder the benefits.” She said everyone deserves self care, so do not feel guilty for taking care of yourself.

Self care takes on many forms for everyone. Taking time for yourself, and showing your body, mind, and spirit some love regularly is just as important as taking care of your loved ones. Self care is not a luxury, it is a necessity.

EATING BETTER IN 2019: PLANT-BASED DIETS By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham

You may have heard chatter about plant-based diets from family, colleagues or on social media, but perhaps you’re confused as to what all the fuss is about. Unlike most trendy eating styles – popular and then gone in a flash – all evidence indicates that plant-based diets are here to stay. This is because plant-based diets are flexible, approachable, and individual, not the restrictive “grapefruit and cabbage” silliness of yore. What does eating a “plant-based diet” actually mean? Basically, exactly what it sounds like: the majority of your caloric intake comes from plants, including fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, and pulses, with very little (or no) meat, dairy or eggs. Plant-based diets also emphasize eating fewer refined sugars, flours, and oils. This is a major shift for most people accustomed to the standard American diet of fast food, energy drinks, and refined sugars in everything, so it does take

20

THE BROOMFIELDER™ FEBRUARY 2019

some time to get used to. But like any other major lifestyle change, a little bit of effort will result in incredible results. Most people move towards a plant-based diet for one of three primary reasons: personal health, animal welfare or environmental concern. Eating less (or no) industrially-raised meat is without question one of the best choices you can make for both your health and

720.726.1750

the planet’s, and every nutrition expert agrees that eating more plants is beneficial to our health. Lifestyle-related diseases, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and more, are on the rise in the United States and other industrialized nations; these ailments are primarily attributable to our shockingly poor diets and sedentary lives. If you’ve been raised on “meat and potatoes,” as so many of us have, you might believe that it’s impossible to get your nutritional needs met simply by eating plants. Specifically, Americans have a fixation on protein - that we’re not getting enough of it - and many believe that plant-based diets are deficient in protein. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most Americans actually consume an excess of protein, typically from cheap, unhealthy factory-farmed meat; alternatively, healthy plant-based diets include beneficial protein from beans, nuts, seeds, and other sources. The key to success with adopting a plant-based diet, or changing any other habit, is to start small. It’s nearly impossible to successfully move from a standard American diet to a healthier plant-based diet overnight, so make tiny changes first. Broomfield-based fitness and nutrition specialist Sara Baker (saralynnbaker.com) shared that “Plant-based eating does not necessarily mean following a strict vegan or all-plant diet. It simply means making vegetables, fruits, seeds, legumes or any plants the focus of your eating.” She said that it’s easy for people to be confused about healthy eating because of the overwhelming amount of nutrition information available, much of it misleading or incorrect, but eating a plant-based diet is easier than you think. “Add a handful of spinach to your fruit smoothie in the morning or chopped vegetables into your eggs. Make a soup loaded with vegetables. Instead of packaged snacks, grab a piece of fruit and a handful of nuts. Make a commitment to having a piece of fruit with breakfast and lunch and vegetables at both lunch and dinner; with so many amazing fruit and vegetables to choose from everyone is bound to find a few they like. Making a few small changes and an effort to eat more plant-based foods can have a significant impact on your overall health.” Although restaurants, grocery stores and meal delivery services are increasingly responding to the demand for vegan and vegetarian options, the best way to be successful with a plant-based diet is to cook the majority of your meals yourself. Check out plant-based cookbooks from the library, and experiment with new flavors, spices and ingredients. Plant-based foods don’t need to be just bland mush, but learning to cook these foods so you actually enjoy eating them may take some time, especially if you’re accustomed to the high levels of sugar, fat and salt in processed foods. Remember, you don’t have to completely eliminate meat and dairy - just eat less of it, and eat more plants. Making any changes to your eating style might be challenging at first, but you’ll soon find that the effort is totally worth the result. HEART HEALTH:

IT’S AS EASY AS ABC(DE) By Kristen Beckman

Hearts may be on your mind in February as Valentine’s Day approaches, which is appropriate because February is also American Heart Month, kicking off February 1 with National Wear Red Day. Both observances are designed to raise awareness of heart disease, and it’s a good time to take stock of your heart health.

22

THE BROOMFIELDER™ FEBRUARY 2019

“The heart is one of the most important organs in the body,” said Dr. Payal Kohli, a cardiologist at Good Samaritan Medical Center who specializes in both women’s and preventive heart health. “It’s going all day every day – morning, noon, and night – so it’s important to keep it strong and healthy because it can really affect the quality of your life if you end up developing heart disease.” Despite huge strides made in treatment and prevention, heart disease continues to be the No. 1 killer of men and women in the United States, exceeding cancer, diabetes, and lung disease combined, Dr. Kohli said. On average, a person dies from heart disease every minute in the United States, she said. The good news is that we have some control over our risk for cardiovascular disease. Focusing on heart health through diet and exercise can not only increase longevity but also can give you more energy, decrease depression, and even lower the impact and incidence of other diseases like cancer.

Lifestyle change can be challenging, but there are five basic areas to focus on to reduce your risk of heart disease, said Dr. Kohli. She tells her patients to focus on ABCDE.

A is for Aspirin. Not long ago, a baby aspirin a day was thought to help keep heart attacks away, although recent data suggests aspirin may not be as beneficial as once thought. Still, Dr. Kohli recommends men over the age of 55 and post-menopausal women have a discussion with their doctor about whether taking a daily aspirin is a good idea.

B is for Blood Pressure. If your blood pressure is high – new guidelines say anything above 120/80 puts you in a higher risk category – the walls of your arteries become damaged, making it easier for cholesterol to stick to them. Dr. Kohli recommends limiting salt intake to 2500 milligrams per day, which can be challenging as salt is added to many foods. In addition, maintaining an ideal body weight and limiting alcohol can reduce your risk of high blood pressure. Men should have no more than 2-3 drinks per day and women no more than 1-2, Dr. Kohli said. Finally, sleep apnea increases your risk of heart attack and drives up blood pressure, but is easily corrected, so it is important to speak with your doctor about a sleep test if you snore at night.

C is for Cholesterol. Cholesterol is largely tied to diet, so avoiding foods high in saturated fat and minimizing consumption of red meat can help lower your risk for heart disease. If your cholesterol levels remain elevated despite lifestyle changes, your doctor may want to prescribe a statin, which is a medication that has been shown to save lives and prevent heart attacks and strokes, Dr. Kohli said. (C is also for cigarettes. If you smoke, quitting entirely is your best bet for preventing heart disease and lung cancer.)

D is for Diabetes. If you have diabetes or pre-diabetes, have your levels screened regularly and do the best you can to reverse it. It can be helpful to limit simple sugars in your diet (the kind in processed food like cookies and cake) and increase consumption of complex sugars from fruit. Get at least five servings of fruit and vegetables per day. And try to lose weight if you are overweight.

E is for Exercise. The American Heart Association recommends you get 150 minutes of moderate-intensity cardiovascular exercise – which means getting your heart rate up enough to break a sweat but still being able to carry on a conversation with someone standing next to you – per week. That 150 minutes can be sliced and diced however you want, whether it is 30 minutes five times a week or taking a brisk walk or climbing stairs a few times a day. As long as you do at least 10 minutes of exercise at a time, your heart is reaping benefits, said Dr. Kohli. Finally, be aware of your risk profile by having your blood pressure and lab work for cholesterol and diabetes checked once per year. If your results show an elevated risk for cardiovascular disease, you can be monitored more closely and make lifestyle changes to lower your risk profile. “The best way to prevent heart disease is to control the risk factors,” said Dr. Kohli. “We still have a huge number of patients who have preventable heart attacks because their risk factors were not appropriately controlled.”

HEART HEALTH

AT GOOD SAMARITAN Good Samaritan provides a full range of cardiovascular services, from prevention to screening to surgery. The facility also houses the only women’s heart center in Colorado, founded by Dr. Kohli, focused on the different risks women have regarding heart disease. Because women often experience different symptoms of heart attack than men, they tend to receive care and diagnosis later and have worse outcomes. A specialist center is the best way to improve outcomes for women by addressing their specific needs, Dr. Kohli said. In addition, Good Samaritan promotes heart health awareness through several initiatives in February and throughout the year. The hospital will celebrate Wear Red Day on February 1 in its main lobby with blood pressure checks and information available about a heart healthy lifestyle. The hospital also partners with the American Heart Association for Little Hats Big Hearts, a project that delivers hats knitted by community volunteers to babies in its Mom/ Baby unit to raise awareness of congenital heart defects.

CLEAR THE CLUTTER, CLEAR YOUR MIND By Bette Erickson

When I’m looking for sharp, easy ideas and great decorating intel, I go to my daughter. A Broomfield High School grad, now living in California with thousands of Instagram followers (@haleywrnr), Haley is styleminded and deeply practical. “Mom, you have a great house,” she gently said to me a year or so ago. “It’s just cluttered.” With that, I set out on a decluttering crusade and the positive results of organizing my personal domain have spilled over into nearly every peripheral aspect of my life. I feel lighter and more positive. Organizing is great – but donating and discarding no longer useful-to-you gadgets, furniture, clothing, and books is an even better, more empowering approach. Don’t just box it up in attractive containers, get rid of it if don’t you use it. “I think one of the biggest hurdles is getting over the mindset of feeling like you have to keep something just because it cost ‘x’ amount of money,” Haley said. “You don’t! If something’s not bringing you joy, especially if it’s just sitting in the back of a closet, give it to someone who will get joy from it.” Re-doing your domestic sanctuary - and making it your personal, safe, and appealing space - needn’t be expensive or involve outside experts. Although, having a Millennial daughter advising you certainly works to your advantage. I’ve learned from her that beauty and style needn’t come at the cost of comfort or utility. Haley and her husband have a four-yearold, two-year-old and six-month-old. Remarkably, their house lacks clutter. They have edited out the extraneous. “We’re at a bit of an advantage because we’re still a young family and haven’t had years and years of accumulating stuff,” Haley admits. “But we’re still very conscious of what items we bring into our home and are quick to part with items we don’t need or don’t use. If we haven’t used something in three or four months, like extra sheet sets

24

THE BROOMFIELDER™ FEBRUARY 2019

or random coffee mugs, we donate them.” One of my New Year’s goals several years ago was to donate or discard one box a week of no longer used items. Easy! I live in a large house. My now deceased husband and I raised our son and daughter here. Fairly soon following his death, I boxed up and donated nearly all of his things. It was emotional, sure. But strangely cathartic, too. The thing about the death of someone you love is that you’ll always have the memories. By holding on to their things, we risk clutter and holding our emotions hostage to the past. I’ve kept a few of Paul’s things, like the handheld magnifying glass I bought him in jest one Christmas when he said it was getting difficult for him to read small print. He joked a month or so later, “Not only are my eyes not what they used to be, but it’s my memory also. I forget where I put the magnifying glass.” That magnifying glass makes me smile. When I first started my organizing journey, it was easy to fall into a trap of simply tidying up piles instead of actually dealing with them. For instance, on one trip to visit me, my daughter held up a magazine from one of several (tidy!) stacks in the family room and simply said, “Mom?” Being witty I replied, “What? I need a verb.” She sighed and said, “This magazine is from 2013.” Even though I hadn’t read the magazine to my satisfaction, I recycled all of the publications scattered around my house older than six months. A key practice to keeping your home organized, she says, is to always tidy the kitchen before bed. “It doesn’t have to be a deep clean, but we always make sure no dishes are left sitting in the sink and the counters are wiped down (no junk mail and random papers, either). It makes such a difference waking up in the morning and not walking into a kitchen still overflowing with yesterday’s mess.” Look around you. If you’re at home, chances are you see room for improvement. Now is the time to make a change, however big or small. Become the curator of your domain, making your home personal, meaningful and clutter-free.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ FEBRUARY 2019

People love to procrastinate, especially when they're dealing with topics that make them uncomfortable. As a result, estate planning can be a task that people tend to put off. Often they wait until they retire or are told they have a terminal illness or Alzheimer's disease. Unfortunately, procrastinating can raise significant questions as to your intent regarding your instructions after death. It adds uncertainty when you have not made amendments to your estate plan for many years, and then make significant changes just prior to your death or disability. Death bed changes are often contested in court. Influence by family members, diminished mental capacity, and the influence of medications on an individual's capacity all raise questions about the last-minute change, or preparation of an estate plan. This can be avoided by putting an estate plan in place early and reviewing it regularly to make sure that it continues to meet your goals. It can also help remind you of your well thought out intent when you are struggling late in life and are encouraged by others to make changes. Many problems can be avoided by planning early, reviewing and updating your plan often, and properly documenting your intent. Your family is less likely to fight over your wishes and they will continue to have family gatherings and meaningful relationships after your death. If you would like to learn more about estate planning, attend one of our complimentary workshops.

New Broomfield Groups Re-Imagine Giving and Augment Impact In Broomfield, there are myriad ways to get involved with dozens of groups that help neighbors in need; wonderful organizations that knit Broomfield together under a flowing blanket of partnership and support for our fellow citizens. In our ever time-constrained world, a few newer groups have formed in recent months to give local philanthropists new, flexible ways to be part of a great impact without a great time commitment.

Guys Who Give Guys Who Give is a group of men with a desire to inspire and who are committed to making a difference in their local community. The mission is to reach out and help local charities with the funds they need to do the amazing work they are doing in their community. The group meets quarterly and nominates and votes to make a collective donation to a deserving charity. Guys Who Give Broomfield formed last summer, in August, 2018. Arik Brum and Jeff Gazaway co-manage the Broomfield chapter which is one of nine chapters nationwide. Guys Who Give meet on the second Wednesday of each quarter, for one hour (but socializing before and after is encouraged) at Wonderland Brewing Co. The next meeting is February 13 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. “We always try to begin our meetings with a quick visit from our previous gift’s recipient. We’ve found it’s an incredible way to close the loop and hear about how our efforts truly can make a positive impact on our community. Additionally, it gives each nonprofit an opportunity to tell us more about the services they offer and hopefully gain a few volunteers at the same time,” said Brum. “We then begin our portion of the event by asking members for nominations of nonprofits in Broomfield (registered 501c3s). We choose three of the nominations out from a hat. The members who made each of the three nominations then have no more than five minutes to speak from the heart and tell the group why they believe their nomination is deserving of our support. The group then anonymously votes on a recipient. The recipient is announced and each member writes a $100 dollar check directly to that organization,” he explained.

100 Women Who Care In mid-January, about 50 women gathered at The Chateaux in Broomfield on a Saturday morning to learn about similar group for women. The informational meeting was organized by Gina Coufal, Executive Director of Development for Friends of Broomfield, and several colleagues of hers from Broomfield FISH, the Broomfield Community Foundation, and other Broomfield groups. 100 Women Who Care will become a group of busy women with compassionate hearts who are committed to making a difference. The mission is to reach out and help struggling neighbors by supporting the work of local charities. The premise and structure of the organization is very similar to Guys Who Give – that collectively a much more powerful impact can be made to support the needs of worthy non-profits. Members are asked to participate in each meeting and contribute $100 per quarter. All contributions will go to Broomfield area non-profits. The goal is to create a group of at least 100 women but all are welcome and it is hoped that number will be far exceeded. The group is based on the ideals and structure of the National 100 Who Care Alliance. Why Join 100 Women Who Care?

• You don’t have time in your busy life to put in hours volunteering but wish you had a way to give back. • You want 100% of your donations to go directly to a local charity or organization in our community. • You want to be part of building something local, something fresh, something that makes a difference, and something that will plug you into a network of hope and positive influence.

The first regular meeting of 2019 is planned for February 2 at the Chateaux at Fox Meadows from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. New members can join and participate that day. For information email Gina

Coufal at GCoufal@friendsofbroomfield.org or visit www.100womenwhocare.net.

A Precious Child’s Women’s Guild “A Precious Child was hosting a Women’s Luncheon back in August 2018. While planning the event, our CEO and Founder Carina Martin, stated that she had always wanted to put together a Women’s Guild and thought that this would be a great time to introduce it and see if we could gather interest and ideas from the women in attendance at the event,” said A Precious Child Events Director Charlene “C.C.” Cram. “There were 19 women who signed up that day! From there, we built our executive board, mission, and charter, and launched our Help for the Holidays Event in December – our very first Women’s Guild Event. During that event women came with toys for children, volunteered, and learned more about A Precious Child and the goals of our Women’s Guild. We had about 30 members sign up that day and we continue to grow.” The mission of A Precious Child’s Women’s Guild is to build a community of dedicated and influential women who share a powerful commitment to A Precious Child and embrace their platform to lead effective and meaningful change for Colorado children in need. “Members consist of women who are leaders in their community – business owners and managers, entrepreneurs,

and supermoms – who utilize their resources and networks to advocate and raise funds for A Precious Child programs serving disadvantaged and displaced children,” said Cram. New members are welcome and a Women’s Guild Membership Drive Breakfast will be held on February 20 from 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. at the Glenmoor Country Club. The goal is to grow the Women’s Guild to 150 members by year end. The Women’s Guild hosts three annual events, in addition to holding quarterly meetings, to raise awareness and funds for A Precious Child programs and support annual activities of the organization.

Women who are interested in receiving more information should contact Cram at cc@apreciouschild.org or visit www.apreciouschild.org.
