Hom Etc. Helping Others Create A Home They Can Love By Tabatha Deans

Pat Vaillancourt, co-owner of Hom Etc., has a lifelong passion for home decorating. Her parents Harry and Barbara Temmer owned Housewarmings for 15 years, and as a family they built, designed and managed the store, until Harry’s passing a couple of years ago. “I have always loved decorating,” said Pat. “In college I would take my little apartment and re-arrange it every week. We’d host parties and people would comment on how different it was each time.” Unable to sit idle for long, Pat and Barbara opened Hom Etc. in 2014, and, according to Pat, are happily busy helping others create a home they can love. “Most people can’t afford their own personal designer. But we can help just about anyone, even men who might be afraid of decorating.” The nearly 2,000 square foot space delightfully displays hundreds of fun and unique items, including a galley hall lined with wall décor, lamps, accents, rugs and small tables. For the decoratively challenged, Pat recommends starting with an existing piece and working around it. “A house, or a room, is never really finished,” believes Pat. Customer service, selection and prices are the driving force behind Hom Etc.’s business model, and Pat and Barbara enjoy

helping customers from all walks of life. “We try to find merchandise that is unique, but still affordable. We can help kids coming in with a few dollars looking for a gift for mom, and we can help re-decorate an entire house.” There’s also a bath and body section to stock up on Colorado made lotions and perfumes, as well as a plethora of fashion accessories such as scarves, necklaces and purses for gift giving. Special orders are also welcome. The holiday season is always festive at the specialty boutique, and Barbara gives this tip for making a home fun all year round. “When you decorate seasonally it keeps your environment fresh. Accent everyday items with holiday items.”

a Coloradan spies a snow-covered hill, regardless of how big or small, you can bet they will find a way to make a sport out of sliding down it. Whether it’s building up snow jumps in Grandma’s back yard or taking the runner sled for a jaunt down the driveway, slip sliding in the snow is a timeless tradition. The mountains surrounding the Denver area are home to several award-winning ski resorts, and in recent years snowboarding has become nearly as popular. Travelers come from all around the world to experience winter activities in Denver, and locals look forward to the colder months all year long. Not everyone is up for the challenge of speeding down a mountain on two thin skis. Many prefer the safety of having a solid sled or the cushioned comfort of an oversized snow tube supporting their body as they careen over the snow-covered hills. For those who favor the tradition of “tubing,” the Front Range is home to several snowtubing/sledding facilities that are fun and safe enough for all ages. “My parents were visiting and we went to a hill that they loved sliding down. And they were in their 70’s,” said Littleton resident Robert Stewart.

The dump site was smoothed over to create the spectacular tubing hill that is a local favorite for all ages. SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE

This recipe has all of the sweetness of a traditional sweet potato casserole recipe, but it is made with the ease of a slow cooker! The holidays are a time of family friends, and let’s face it... a full oven! Make this side dish in your slow cooker on this special holiday (or any night of the week), and enjoy a healthy and delicious vitamin-rich dish without the hassle!

INGREDIENTS • • • •

4 medium Sweet potatoes, peeled (or about 4 cups mashed) 1 medium Ripe banana 2 1/2 cup Unsweetened almond milk (or milk of choice) [1] 2 tbs Honey or low sugar maple syrup

1 Large egg 4 Egg whites 1 tsp Salt 1 1/2 tsp Cinnamon 1-2 tbs Sweetener of choice (or 1-3 pkts stevia) Optional

1/4 tsp Cinnamon 1/4 tsp Salt 1 tbs Sweetener (or 1-2 pkts stevia)

TOPPING: • •

3/4 cup Chopped pecans 1/4 cup Sugar free or low sugar maple syrup (or honey)

[1] If baking this casserole, rather than putting it in a crockpot, only use 1 1/2 cup milk.

DIRECTIONS

(The estimated total time to make this recipe is 4-8 Hours) 1. Peel potatoes, and cut into large wedges (i did 3 wedges per potato), place potatoes in large microwave safe bowl covered with saran wrap, pierced a few times to let out steam. Put bowl in the microwave for 5-6 minutes, or until potatoes are fork tender. Remove saran wrap and let cool (do this carefully so you don’t burn yourself on the steam!) 2. Note: You could also boil the potatoes in a pot of boiling water for about 10 minutes or until they are fork tender. 3. Meanwhile, place the rest of the ingredients in a blender or food processor, and mix until everything is well combined. When the potatoes are cooled, place the potatoes in the blender with the rest of the ingredients and mix until smooth. (Or you could pulse it and leave some of the potatoes a bit chunky if you prefer your casserole to have more texture rather than a smooth filling.) Choosing the Perfect

For many people, the holidays are all about family, friends, and great food and wine. But picking a great wine to serve with your holiday meals can be challenging. Generally pairing a white sweeter wine with turkey or spicy food and a red wine with Prime Rib or steak is recommended, but personal tastes are also important.

Several local wine experts have offered some suggestions on what wines to pair with your favorite dishes...

ennifer Hulan and her husband recently opened the Waters Edge Winery, located appropriately on Vine Street in Centennial near the Streets of Southglenn mall. “Our rule of thumb is there is no right or wrong, but do make sure whatever wine you choose doesn’t overpower the food you are serving,” she explained. For a white wine paired a holiday meal such as Thanksgiving or Christmas, she recommends their Snowmass – Sauvignon Blanc “One of my personal favorites. It’s light and refreshing and the perfect pairing for the wonderful savory flavors that come with the meal.” Brothers Danny and Jeff Chayer own Silver Vines Winery located in Olde Town in Arvada. Danny’s advice is to serve what you like but don’t be afraid to try something new. “Wine tastings or joining our wine club is a great way to learn about and try new wines.”

For a turkey dinner, Danny recommends a sweet wine like their 2012 Reisling, but you can also serve a red wine like their 2012 Grandview Reserve. “It’s really light, bold and has a very smooth vanilla flavor.” And Ken Parry with Highlands Wine Seller on Timberline Road in Highlands Ranch has written several books on how to pair wines with foods. “We’ve had people bring in their menus and we help them select the wine,” he said. “There’s a wine for everybody.” His favorite white wine at Thanksgiving for years has been Santa Margarita Pinot Grigo. “It’s a really nice grape fruit that goes very well with white meat.” But he also likes Pacific Rim and Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Reisling wines. Pinot Noir is also a popular red wine to serve with turkey and Ken says some of the best right now come from Oregon. “The Willamette Valley has the best weather conditions and soil to grow the Pinot Noir grape, which is a difficult grape to grow.” If you’re serving prime rib or other beef dishes, Jennifer Hulan says something with a peppercorn or smoky flavor goes very well. “We have a Barrosa Valley Shiraz that we recommend with a heavy meat flavor.” Danny Chayer recommends their California Syrah with but also really likes their Cab Franc from Colorado’s Palisade vineyards. “They’re phenomenal with prime rib as it really brings out the flavor in the wine.” Ken Parry recommends pairing beef or prime rib with a Merlot, or a blend like Clayhouse Adobe Red or a Petite Sirah. If you’re looking for a dessert wine to serve at a party or after your holiday meal, the sweeter Riesling wines will work well with cheesecake or even pumpkin pie. Jennifer recommends their Canadian Eiswein (ice wine) that can be paired with strawberries, Gorgonzola or a tart cheesecake. They also have a Mexican Coffee Port, which works with anything chocolate or a nutty dessert. Danny recommends their Chocolate Delight-a chocolate and red wine that goes very well with cheesecake and light cheeses. All three wine experts recommend “try before you buy” and look for wine tastings or consider joining a wine club to expand your wine palate. “Wine tastings are the best way to try new wines. We often get stuck in a rut and the cost of wine often prohibits us from trying something new. No one wants to buy a $20 bottle of wine and have it taste awful,” said Jennifer Hulan.
