FROM THE

15 Years Strong Thanks to You! I remember opening my mailbox to see the first edition of The Broomfielder™ magazine 15 years ago. As a lifelong Broomfield resident I was quite excited. Broomfield had always had a newspaper, but a magazine was new and fresh. The publication was large format and full of photos and lots of advertisements.

I

had been a magazine editor for several years already at that point so I had a few opinions about the publication, but I knew one thing: I wanted to be involved. I had two toddlers at home so the timing was not quite right (not to mention, no one had asked me), so I tabled the idea. A few years later, I walked into the publisher’s office one day and said maybe The Broomfielder™ should have a writer from Broomfield and it should be me (the rest of the staff was based in Denver). He said okay and I spent the next nine years writing articles in my spare time. When Mike Garrison bought the company three years ago, he wanted to make some changes and he asked me to be the new editor. I jumped at the chance. We have spent the past three years evolving the magazine into what it is today: an essential publication that captures the spirit of Broomfield and highlights the businesses of this community, month in and month out.

Fifteen years is a long time. A lot has changed in the world since then. • Fifteen years ago September 11th had not yet happened. Michael Jackson was still alive. • We did not have the Segway, the camera phone, Skype, the iPhone (or even the iPod), YouTube, or the Cloud. • Fifteen years ago The Paul Derda Recreation Center, The Broomfield County Commons, The First Bank Center, Arista, and Anthem did not exist yet, Holy Family High School had just opened here, and the FlatIron Crossing Mall was brand new. Broomfield has done a lot of growing up in the past 15 years. It has been fun to watch. In honor of our 15th anniversary, throughout the year we will be looking at some of the great things about Broomfield all centered around the number 15. Thanks for being with us through the journey and thanks for reading. Happy New Year, Tina Eichner, Editor

HAPPENINGS

School

OPEN

ENROLLMENT DEADLINES

All students in Adams 12 Five Star Schools are assigned to attend a specific school based upon their residence. If a student wishes to attend another school, they can apply through the district's Choice Program. Both in-district and out-of-district students can apply for Choice. Out-of-district Choice requests are considered after in-district applications. Acceptance to a Choice school is based upon several criteria: availability of space, sufficient teaching staff, appropriate programs, and necessary facilities for special needs students. The priority consideration window is open until January 29 (for the next school year). Families wishing to enroll in Adams 12 Five Star Schools in the next school year should apply for priority consideration during the first round. There will be a second and third round for schools that have space available after the first round has closed. All of the details are available at www.adams12.org/choice. The Boulder Valley School District Open Enrollment application period runs through January 15. If you would like your child to attend a BVSD school other than the one he or she is currently enrolled in, you must submit an application online at www.bvsd.org/openenrollment or visit the Open Enrollment office no later than 4:00 p.m., January 15. Submitting your application after that date will result in your student being added to the bottom of any existing waitlist for that school and grade. Approval of Open Enrollment is based upon space availability and programming at the requested school. Jeffco Public Schools families who wish to enroll a student in a school other than their assigned neighborhood school must complete a Choice Enrollment Application, available at all schools or from www.jeffcopublicschools.org/enrollment/ and submit it to the school of choice. Applications for First Round Choice Enrollment are accepted through January 29 for the following school year. Students are accepted on a space available basis. Round one applications are prioritized through a lottery process. Waiting lists, which are prioritized, will be created if applicants exceed space available at the school. If a student is not accepted at a school during the first round Choice Enrollment, the student will remain on the prioritized waitlist and be carried over to Second Round Choice Enrollment.

Colon Cancer Screening –

WHY NOT YOU? C By Bruce Walker, MD and Paul Deneault, MD, FRCP

olon cancer is the third-most common cancer among both men and women in the country, accounting for around 133,000 new diagnoses each year. Have you given any thoughts to a colon cancer screening in 2016? Let us answer a few concerns we frequently hear from our patients.

attributed to people getting active colon cancer screenings like colonoscopies.

“Why should I even bother with a colon cancer screening if I don’t have any symptoms?” Colon cancer is common and can be fatal. Colon cancer usually starts as a polyp the size of a pea, which can grow to be as large as a mushroom or cauliflower in your colon. Removal of a polyp when it is small can prevent it from ever growing into a cancer. If you wait until you have symptoms like bleeding or irregular bowel movements, the cancer is often more advanced and difficult to treat.

“I don’t want to drink a gallon of liquid to clean my colon for one of those exams.” In the year 2015, there are now more options to prep and clean the bowel. Options today usually involve 64 ounces of laxative solution, but can include as little as 12 ounces, or even pills if you prefer.

“I have heard that a colonoscopy really doesn’t do any good.” Wrong. The incidence or number of new cases of colon cancer in the United States has been dropping by almost four percent per year, and the death rate from colon cancer has been dropping about three percent per year. Most of this improvement can be

“My friend said a colonoscopy is painful.” Wrong again. With Propofol sedation, less than one percent of patients feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure, and recovery is immediate.

“I really don’t want a tube in my butt, so is there something else I can do?” Yes, of course there are other options. A stool sample can be sent in and checked for blood. If the sample comes back positive, you will be referred for a colonoscopy to find out what exactly caused the abnormality in the stool test. This is YOUR year to get screened. Talk to your doctor about some of these options during your next visit. In the end – the best colon cancer screening exam is the one that gets done!

Setting Goals, Not Resolutions

HOW TO SET

S . M . A . R .T. By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS

THAT LAST MORE THAN SIX WEEKS As the clock strikes midnight on December 31, many people are thinking about or have already planned their New Year’s resolutions. The most common resolutions are often related to fitness and health, as well as financial goals. Everyone seems to start the year off motivated and ready to tackle these resolutions. However, come mid-February many resolutions have gone by the wayside and people return to old habits. Why can't people stick to resolutions and how do you get your resolutions to stick beyond the typical six weeks?

20

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JANUARY 2016

First of all, it can be helpful to set goals and not resolutions. Goal setting involves more of a process to help ensure success. Though most people have heard of setting S.M.A.R.T. goals, many people do not take the time to go through the goal setting process. Though you can find a few different definitions, S.M.A.R.T. most often stands for specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. If a goal fit these criteria, success is more likely.

G

oals must be specific. A goal such as “I want to lose weight” is vague. Try to be more specific such as “I want to lose five pounds.” The goal should be meaningful and important enough to you that it will prompt you to take steps to achieve the goal. Then try to make the goals measurable. With weight loss that is fairly easy, but with other goals such as financial, you need to make sure you can track your progress. If your goal is to save money, how much money do you want save and how are you going to track that savings? Goals should be achievable. If the goal is too far out of your reach, you might have a hard time committing to working towards it. It is not achievable to lose 20 pounds in one week, but if your goal is to lose 20 pounds over the course of six months, that is achievable and will keep you motivated knowing that the goal is not too daunting. You also must be able to reach your goal in a realistic way. Again, using weight loss as an example, it is most likely not realistic to tell yourself you will never eat sugar again. Something more realistic would be to maybe only have sweets two to three times a week. Lastly, goals should be timely. You need to give yourself a time frame, not necessarily a deadline, so you can keep working towards your goals and have an idea of when you want to accomplish the goal. If you do not give yourself at least a time frame you might continue to delay progress, as you might think you can start working on the goal at anytime. Angie Nichols, a Life Coach with Elevation Coaching believes “setting small goals that you can reach

5 LBS

and celebrate throughout the year is key in determining if you will be successful in reaching your larger goals. “ So if the overall goal seems too daunting, break it down into smaller goals. Angie also keeps a mason jar on her desk throughout the year. When she thinks of something throughout the year that she would like to achieve but maybe does not have time for right away, she simply writes it down and places it in the jar. Then at the beginning of a year when she is starting her goal setting, she reads through what she placed in the jar to get the juices flowing. The New Year can be an exciting time to start fresh, motivated, and ready to tackle those goals. By taking a few extra minutes to go through a goal setting process and breaking your goals into smaller goals so you can check in with yourself along the way, you have a much better chance of being successful.

Behind Fitness A THE

The Paul Derda Recreation Center was voted the Best Fitness Center in this year’s Talk of the Town voting by Broomfield readers, for many good reasons – the classes, activity choices, the staff, the equipment, the pool, and all of the other assets of the facility from the spas to slides, and weights to wireless Internet. But have you thought about what it takes to keep this jewel in the city’s crown running smoothly?

22

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JANUARY 2016

By Dan Powers

few big picture facts to consider: visitors arrive as early as 5:00 a.m. and stay as late as 10 p.m. nearly every day. Dozens of fitness classes, individual instruction, group lessons for kids and everything from birthday parties to child sitting to Red Cross classes can occur on any given day. Janitorial and maintenance staff are on the clock at all hours, and organizing, cleaning, and safety checks on equipment occur all 24 hours of the day. According to Broomfield’s Recreation Facility Manager Matt Gulley, on average about 400 – 450 employees are part of keeping the Paul Derda Recreation Center in action. “It depends on the time of year,” said Matt. It can be as many as 600 employees counting the summer with even more classes for kids. Two main things that are likely not as obvious: the annual week-long closure for maintenance and the overall integration and effort of hundreds of staff people. “I think the ability of our facilities crew and public works staff to keep this building clean and looking good throughout the year is incredible,” said Matt. “Figuring out how to make all our schedules work to make all the programs come together for our guests is something we’re proud of. For example, lining up child care resources with the busy classes and aligning other staffing to match demands is something we are always striving to make as seamless as possible. During the week closure we’re painting, checking equipment, and doing extra projects – yes we’re shut down, but we don’t have a week off. It’s probably harder manual labor than our usual work.”

PAUL DERDA RECREATION CENTER:

Besides the special annual effort, there is the huge spectrum of amenities needing daily attention. Just a sample: there is the indoor running track, the Bob Prince Gymnastics Center that provides 7,500 square feet of carpet, extra uneven bars and stations (and much more), the lazy river, family spa, 35-ft climbing wall, 50+ cardio equipment choices, etc., etc. The Kids’ Zone requires frequent cleanup and attention as the younger visitors constantly prove their ingenuity at loosening, moving, and otherwise finding ways to mess with how all the equipment is attached, built, and arranged. The pool requires regular and incidental special cleanings; the climbing wall, weight machines, spinning cycles, etc. – all are constantly wiped down and kept clean. When it comes to the range of fitness classes, managing the range of popular classes and new requests is handled by Fitness Supervisor Veronica Mueller. She completes a daily analysis of the attendees, comments, requests, and takes ideas from instructors. Through November of last year, just the fitness classes in the Center’s studios had more than 65,800 attendees. And you thought your work day was busy? “BodyStep, BodyPump, and BodyVive have been very popular for ten years,” said Veronica. “A lot of what drives our scheduling is the need to meet all demographics in the city. Classes for active adults, low-impact classes, kid-friendly, exercises for injury recovery, and everything on the scale in between is what we organize. And then arranging them during certain times of day based on numerous requests – it is a constant effort.” Other popular classes include Silver Sneakers (fitness classes designed for seniors), Zumba, yoga, spinning, etc. A nuance that is an art as much as a skill is matching the availability of instructors with “personality” of class. “Depending on the time of day, the longevity of the ‘regulars,’ the intensity of the class, and many other factors, there are ways to match the best instructor with the expectations of the students,” said Veronica. There is also the IT support involved for classes such as gymnastics and swimming that are available via online registration. Now that you have a new perspective on all the efforts that go into making Paul Derda a top-notch fitness center, know that through January 15, a special sale on Recreation Center Annual Passes is occurring: you will get a free season pass to The Bay with your PDRC pass. The pass includes benefits too numerous to list, but here are a few: free child sitting, free weight room orientation, youth drop-in fitness and Yoga classes, 25% off personal trainers, 50% discount on Zumba, $10 discount on massage fees, and more.

DID YOU KNOW? The Recreation Center is named in honor of Paul Derda, known as “Mr. Broomfield” for his long involvement in civic events. He was Broomfield’s Director of Parks and Recreation from 1978 to 2002.

Immunity Defenders:

How to Stay Healthy During Cold Weather By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham

The winter season – especially post-holiday – often brings with it rundown immune systems, lethargy, exhaustion, and the “seasonal blues.” Long, cold days plus limited natural sunlight means we feel tired, irritable, moody, and generally out-of-sorts. To combat this seasonal mood shift, make a few simple changes to your everyday routine which will make a world of difference in your mental, physical, and emotional health.

Eat Quality Food The quality of your diet has a huge impact on your overall health, and even more so in the winter when your system might be struggling. Our bodies work best when their natural defenses are at their strongest, and that might take a little extra effort on your part: this time of year, add extra fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C to your diet. A powerful antioxidant, vitamin C also strengthens your immune system and helps you fight off colds and viruses going around. Pomegranates, kiwifruit, and citrus, in season through winter’s darkest days, contain lots of vitamin C (as well as many other powerful nutrients) and can be added to salads, used to top warming winter porridges, or simply eaten fresh. Bell peppers, leafy greens, and broccoli are all high in vitamin C and can be used in a variety of savory and warming foods. Many herbal teas also contain vitamin C; add fresh lemon to the tea to boost the nutrition even more.

Kale Salad Keep Moving

with Citrus, Pomegranate Seeds, and Pepitas

It’s hard to get motivated when it’s freezing, but make an effort to get as much exercise as possible, preferably outside, but bundle up! We often struggle during winter due to lower light levels, which can cause a drop in vitamin D and serotonin levels. If you’re able, get into the sun for at least a few minutes each day – not only is the exercise good for you physically, it’s also good for you mentally.

Clean Up Wash your hands with hot water and regular soap as often as possible. Study after study has shown that repeated hand washing is absolutely the best defense against germs and will help keep you healthy. You don’t need fancy antibacterial soaps – standard bar soap and plenty of hot water will do the trick. Frequent hand washing is a good idea year-round, but even more so in the winter when more time is spent indoors and in closer contact with people who might be sick. Remember that your phone and computer are one of your biggest sources of germs – swab with rubbing alcohol regularly!

Get Your Rest Ensure you’re getting enough sleep. A compromised immune system and overall malaise often results from our intense go-go-go society, where it’s seemingly a badge of honor to brag about how little sleep you survive on. There is actually no honor in this – your body desperately needs regular, good-quality sleep in order to repair and restore, and your brain needs it to function at its best. Keep your bedroom cool, quiet and free from distractions, and make a point of turning off all electronic devices at least thirty minutes before going to bed. Listen to music, take a bath, read an actual paper book, or sit quietly with your thoughts. Whatever winding down method you choose, it signifies to your body and brain to prepare for rest. The only way we can feel and perform at our best is to take good care of our precious bodies. This winter, make an extra commitment to yourself to eat well, exercise, and get adequate sleep – and you’ll be amazed at how much stronger you’ll feel.

2. In a Mason jar, combine olive oil, citrus juices and maple syrup and season generously with salt and pepper. 3. Combat Super Bowl Food Indulgences with a

FAMILY RUN

By Sara Baker

BEFORE THE GAME Super Bowl Sunday is practically a holiday in America. Many of us love our football even if our favorite team does not make it to the big game. Along with more than four hours of football often comes four hours of eating our favorite football food. Approximately 1.23 billion chicken wings will be consumed throughout Super Bowl weekend according to the Chicken Council, and the National Restaurant Association reports that Super Bowl Sunday is the busiest day of the year for pizza delivery restaurants. Super Bowl Sunday is now the second-largest food holiday after Thanksgiving and is known for a large calorie consumption.

F

ootball fare is not traditionally very healthy so why not start your day off with something healthy that the entire family will enjoy by participating in the 14th Annual Super Bowl Fun Run sponsored by the City of Broomfield. This year the run will be held on Sunday, February 7. The Super Bowl Fun Run is held at the Broomfield County Commons and is an awesome family event for walkers or runners of all ages and abilities with 3 different courses offered. Participants can choose from a 1-mile, 2-mile or 3-mile course. The race starts at 11:00 a.m. Angela Delier, the Athletics Recreation Supervisor for the City of Broomfield said that the race usually draws about 150 runners, joggers, and walkers. A unique aspect of the race is that participants are welcome to bring their dog on a leash. Many races do not allow pets so this is a great event to let your furry friend join in on the fun. Strollers and joggers are also welcome. The race will also include participants from the Recreation Center’s Couch to 5K Program. This trainer-led program teaches the basics of running form, safety, and techniques, provides support and motivation, and gets participants ready to run 3.1 miles by preparing for two months in advance of the race. The race cost is $15 before January 27 and $20 after January 27. The registration cost includes a long sleeve t-shirt. You can register by calling or visiting the Paul Derda Recreation Center at 303-460-6940 or at the Broomfield Community Center at 303-460-6940. There is no deadline to register and you can even register the day of the race. So before you sit down to enjoy the big game and a slice of pizza or a few chicken wings, get outside with friends or family and come join the fun for the Super Bowl Fun Run!

Animals Healthier HOW

CAN MAKE YOU

By Kristen Beckman

The next time Fido causes your blood pressure to spike because he chewed up your slippers or rooted through the garbage while you were away, take heart. The health benefits of sharing your home and life with a companion animal probably outweigh the occasional stresses.

T

he Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists lower blood pressure, reduced cholesterol and decreased feelings of loneliness, as well as increased opportunities for socialization, exercise, and outdoor activities as benefits of pet ownership. Various studies have also revealed other physical benefits associated with companion animals, including increased pain tolerance, quicker healing following illness or surgery, fewer doctor visits and days absent from work due to illness, and lower incidence of some diseases. Social, emotional, and mental health benefits of pet ownership have also been studied and include lower levels of anxiety and stress, and better attention and mental processing. A recent report published by the National Center for Health Research summarized several studies conducted during the past decade that show a relationship between pet ownership and human health benefits. Those studies show pet owners, especially sedentary adults, are more likely to engage in physical activity with a pet, which can lead to cardiovascular and other health benefits. The health benefits of companion animals for children and elderly people have also been a focus of

28

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JANUARY 2016

studies. In one study, children had lower blood pressure and heart rates as well as fewer signs of behavioral stress when a dog was present in the room during routine physical exams at a doctor’s office. Studies also have found a link between companion animals and physical wellbeing of elderly people that may result from a sense of responsibility and purpose associated with the caretaker role of owning a pet. Elderly subjects in one study who owned a dog or cat were better able to climb stairs, take medication, prepare meals, and attend to personal hygiene tasks than those without a pet. Perhaps because of studies like these, many programs are working to harness the positive health benefits of companion animals for different types of patients. Hospitals often allow patients to visit with their own pets or incorporate programs that bring in volunteers with trained pets to interact with patients while they are hospitalized. Nursing homes also frequently partner with organizations that bring in companion animals for visits, which leads to decreased feelings of loneliness and increased social interaction among residents.

Many therapy programs are beginning to incorporate companion animals as well. One such program, Animal Assisted Therapy Programs of Colorado, provides services with the help of three horses, two goats, four cats, two rabbits, and two rats who all live at the program’s main facility — the Barking C.A.A.T. Ranch in Lakewood. Clinicians also can bring their own dogs to assist during therapy sessions. The program maintains a satellite office in Boulder. The nonprofit program deals with the entire range of mental and emotional health issues and clients of all ages. About 75 percent of its clients are children and teenagers dealing with issues such as behavior and social emotional problems, ADHD, conduct disorders, abuse situations, trauma, neglect, autism spectrum disorders, anxiety, depression, and adjustment difficulties, said Ellen Winston, co-founder and training director for the program. Visiting the ranch, which is a cozy home on a one-acre property, can be less intimidating for clients, particularly children, said Winston. Being greeted by a cat or dog often reduces anxiety and allows clients to feel more comfortable than they might in a hospital or clinic setting. In addition, the program’s animals provide specific services during therapy sessions. Winston said several of the program’s pets were rescued after suffering abuse or were re-homed due to a variety of issues. Many times these animals serve as a metaphor for clients’ own struggles, and clients can talk to or about the animal rather than directly talking about their own feelings or situation, which can often be intimidating, said Winston. The program also incorporates its animals in experiential work, including having clients walk a horse or teach a dog to do a trick. These tasks can teach skills such as goal setting, persistence, patience, how to cope with frustration, how to read cues, and how to give positive reinforcement. These skills can help clients change their responses or behavior in future challenging situations, said Winston. Animals that participate in the program are screened, certified, and trained to ensure both the safety of the client as well as the wellbeing of the animal. More information about the program is available at www.animalassistedtherapyprograms.org

Service Dogs Help Many in Need People have trained animals for centuries to help them complete specific tasks or improve their quality of life. Within the past several decades, dogs in particular have been trained as service animals, helping people with various disabilities and challenges better function within their environments. Guide dogs have helped people with visual disabilities navigate their surroundings for more than 500 years. More recently, hearing dogs have been trained to alert people with hearing disabilities to important sounds in their environments, and assistance dogs have been trained to open doors and retrieve items for people in wheelchairs. Service dogs in these roles typically go through more than a year of socialization and specific training to ensure they possess the temperament and skills to improve the quality of life for people who rely on them. Service dogs have begun taking on new responsibilities in the past several years, many of which capitalize on dogs’ powerful sense of smell and other intuitive abilities we don’t yet fully understand. Recent research suggests dogs can accurately detect some forms of cancer in people, in some cases even before symptoms surface. Dogs increasingly are being used as service dogs to help detect imminent seizures or low blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. Some researchers believe dogs can smell chemical changes that precede illnesses or events such as these and can be trained to alert their owner in time for them to protect themselves. Emotional support dogs are another emerging class of service animal that is attracting increasing attention for their ability to help people cope with emotional difficulties. The potential benefits of these service animals is promising enough that the Veterans Administration is studying whether service dog status should be given to dogs trained to assist veterans in coping with post-traumatic stress disorder.

MANAGING

Weight Loss FOR LIFE By Dan Powers

Following the holidays it’s common to take stock in our general health, look in the mirror, and commit to “getting back on track” with our fitness and diet. Proactive behavior changes can make a huge difference in your health, however we’re not talking about another fad diet or suddenly deciding to train for the Ironman triathlon. Thoughtful efforts with help from dieticians and other health experts can lead to a remarkable year of improved health.

L

ike any strategic project, losing weight and becoming healthier involves an initial assessment of “what is” and clarity around goals, with realistic steps to achieve them. Add in a protocol for measuring your progress and you are soon on a path to a slimmer, proud, empowered you for 2016. The best part is you can find ways to do this with smart and helpful experts. Angela Mariotti RDN, CDE, is the Bariatric Coordinator at St. Anthony North Health Campus. She is a Colorado native who specializes in weight management, nutrition, and diabetes. She devises personalized weight loss programs and is at the forefront of wellness and healthcare changes across Colorado that are proactive, preventative, and personalized. Angela sees an equal mix of people coming in for consultation borne of their own interest in getting healthier and those who have had a doctor prompt them, as well as some people who are recovering from a life-threatening event like a heart attack that has made their diet and weight an urgent issue. Angela describes how getting a comprehensive background picture is the first step when she meets new clients. “I find out what their current eating habits are, their weight and health goals, their behaviors and past experiences with weight and health, what they have tried, and what they want to do,” she said. “Of course, no two clients are the same. Every client has a different goal and a different path.” Continued on page 32

The dynamics of a person’s eating habits are key to managing weigh issues – determining why they eat when they do is not as simple as it may seem. “Eating for most people is subconscious; you don’t think about it. Much of my initial assessment with clients is asking them to describe their eating habits,” she said. Angela asks clients to track how much they eat and when, and what they were doing around that time, as well as their emotional state and other behaviors. “Keeping a journal so we can look back on your eating habits is an important part of this process. For a lot of us that can seem tedious and a little bizarre, but it teaches us a lot about why we eat what we eat. You can see when you eat because you’re bored, you’re celebrating, you’re sad – it really is about figuring out what makes you tick in context to your diet.”

It really opens your eyes to sodium, fat, etc. It is helpful, and even surprising to look back on the nutrition in your food choices.”

GO WIRELESS! GO INVISALIGN! Straight Teeth. No Braces. INVISALIGN® WILL WORK FOR YOU!

Angela explained that she’s reading the book Mindless Eating by Brian Wansink, PhD. that describes the ways food psychology and the environments we’re in affect how much we eat – and how frequently people underestimate how much they eat. “Trying to figure out your triggers for eating is necessary: we can’t fix bad habits if we don’t know they’re there. For some people it’s more a lack of exercise, for others it’s an attitude about food. Getting to these deeper prompts and habits around eating are key to creating the plan for a more healthy diet and set of eating behaviors that can often be quite different that a client has ever done before.” Once clarity around diet and related behaviors is established, Angela sets shortand long-term goals. “For many people the ‘top of the mountain’ may be losing 50 pounds. But we set a short term goal first to tack their food every day for a month. Then we review that, and see they eat half a cup of vegetables a day and the recommended amount is three or four cups. So we create a new goal of one cup a day. We go for realistic and measurable goals,” said Angela. We then create nutrition, a behavior, and an activity goal and write them down.” For example – increase in vegetables each day, not watching TV for a night or two each week while eating, and adding in some leg lifts in their chair or walking for a certain amount of time each week. “Wherever you can start based on your lifestyle and goals, we customize those goals. We don’t ‘put people on diets.’ We help shape long-term lifestyle changes around eating and wellness that become habits.” Contact Angela Mariotti at: St. Anthony North Health Campus, 14300 Orchard Parkway, Westminster, CO or angelamariotti@centura.org.

FROM

A FRESH START By Jennifer Kerr, President and CEO, Broomfield Chamber of Commerce

T

he New Year is always a time of reflection on the past year and of hope for what can be improved upon in the New Year. Whether it’s giving something up or adding something new, we always start with the best intentions. Sometimes we are able to make those new habits stick, and sometimes we are failing miserably by the second week of the New Year. If you own a business, you may be contemplating adding new products and services or re-evaluating your processes and procedures. As an employee, you may be asking yourself how you will have more work-life balance or establishing a list of goals for yourself that you would like to accomplish at work. The thought of a fresh start is so appealing, but it can also be overwhelming. If you do plan on making some changes this year, make a list and then make it manageable. Be very specific in your goals and assign time frames. I have written before about my annual New Year’s resolution to be more organized. I am probably going on fifteen years with that one. Obviously that is not a goal that is achievable because it lacks specifics and a time frame. However this year, I am going to implement an organizational method to reduce the paper clutter on my desk with daily and weekly actions. I will clearly define the organizational method and action items and tasks in my daily and monthly calendar to keep me on track. Being able to see the top of my desk will be a great reward, but a fancy new planner would be both an incentive and reward to stay on track. Of course it will take up space on my desk and may eventually be filled with sticky notes and notepaper and then I will need to have a sticky note on my computer that reminds me to use my planner. I guess I’m going to have to think this one through a little bit more. Good luck with your New Year’s Resolutions and I hope you have a Healthy, Happy, and Successful New Year!
