FROM THE
Happy 2017 And just like that, it is time to turn another page on the calendar. The beginning of the year is filled with promise, expectation, and optimism. For many, it is an opportunity for a fresh start. At The Broomfielder, we are taking a fresh look at our content and how we cover Broomfield. High School News from the Inside Out This month I am excited to share a trio of articles written by students from Broomfield High School. In future issues we will showcase similar content from Legacy and Holy Family students. I will never forget the impact of being able to write articles and have them printed in the local paper when I was a young writer and really wanted to give some of today’s young journalists the same opportunity. I hope you find the articles fun and informative. It is nice to have a window on Broomfield’s high school students who are such an important part of our community. I would like to thank Mr. Matt Lay at Broomfield High for helping coordinate this section. Broomfield Business Leaders In this issue, we are proud to announce The Broomfielder’s Business Leaders. Nominations are now being accepted for Broomfield businesspeople that made a difference in their companies and in the community in 2016. As Broomfield grows and thrives, it is our business community that lifts us up, from the small mom and pop restaurants and boutiques, to the large global companies that employ many who live here. In partnership with our committee of community leaders we will select honorees for small and large business leaders (based on annual revenue), to be recognized this spring at a special event and also in the magazine. You can find additional details on page 34. People and Events I have invited you before and the first of the year is a good time for a reminder! I am always looking for those hidden stories about people in the community. Do you know about someone with an interesting hobby or unique accomplishment? What about Broomfield’s unsung heroes who quietly make our community better for all? Please send me your ideas! We would love to explore and share them. Likewise, I am always looking to expand the diversity of events included in our calendar pages. Please send calendar requests at least 30 days prior to the publication date (for example, by February 1 for the March issue). For both of these opportunities you can reach out to me at tina@loudmouthmedia.com. Thanks for reading and Happy New Year!

HAPPENINGS
ARTS+CULTURE JANUARY 29
Enjoy a classical guitar concert at 3:00 p.m. at the Broomfield Auditorium sponsored by the Broomfield Library Friends Foundation featuring Colin McAllister, a Colorado Springs artist who has performed throughout North America and Europe, including as a guest artist with the San Diego Symphony, Colorado Symphony, and the La Jolla Symphony. McAllister also serves as Coordinator of the Music Program and Lecturer in Music and Humanities at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Drawing inspiration from Alberta Manguel’s The Library at Night, Colin McAllister’s recital takes the listener on a literary, musical, and historical journey through time and place. McAllister interweaves music alongside poetry, historical vignettes, and visual imagery in an engaging concert-length presentation. The compelling selection of music includes masters of medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque polyphony, the first “Golden Age” of the guitar. Concert-goers will also have the opportunity to experience Spines, a new piece by award-winning composer Christopher Adler. The concert promises to be an unforgettable exploration of The Library at Night, a feast for the ears, eyes, and mind. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at door; tickets are available at Brown Paper Tickets (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/ event/2714596;1-800-838-3006). A silent auction will be held in the Audi Lobby before the concert and The Broomfield Library Friends Foundation (BLFF) will use all proceeds from the concert and auction to support programs at the Broomfield Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library. BLFF is an all-volunteer organization that raises funds to help support many popular library programs, including the children’s program Happy Noon Year; summer reading programs for Broomfielders of all ages; One Book, One Broomfield; Book Groups in a Bag; and more. BLFF raises funds through its membership drive, its annual book sale and used bookstore, a brick sale, planned giving, donations, and special fund-raisers. For more information follow BLFF on Facebook or visit the website at http://broomfieldbook.wordpress.com.

10 MISTAKES
(Part 2 of 3)
PEOPLE MAKE WHEN DYING Free Estate Planning Workshop
Below is the continuation of the 10 common mistakes people make when they die.
This entertaining educational workshop is designed to expose the real truth about estate planning and the often complicated issues that surround it. You will learn how death taxes work and the misconceptions about wills and trusts. You will also learn how to protect the inheritance from your children’s creditors and their spouses in the event of a divorce. Workshop dates are listed below. Reservations are required so call to reserve your spot today!
Focus on Taxes. Spending too much time and energy focusing on tax implications and overlooking critical family issues that arise upon death can cost you and your family much more than what you would have paid in tax. Saving taxes is important but it shouldn't be put ahead of family harmony.

Don't Know What Options Are Available. Putting a plan in place without knowing what all of the options are that produce an effective estate plan is a common reason why estate plans fail to meet their objectives. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all plan. You should understand what options are available to you in order to maximize the benefit to your family following your death. Don't let your family be the horror story everyone talks about when they get together for coffee. Take the steps necessary to avoid these common mistakes so that things will go smoothly when you die.
Tune in to next month's Broomfielder for more of the 10 Mistakes People Make When Dying.

4 Resolutions Your Doctor Would Like You to Make –
and How They Can Make Your 2017 Happier! By Joseph Lovato, DO
I’m guessing we have something in common when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. We know they’re a lot easier to make than they are to keep. So that’s where I begin when my own patients ask about setting a healthier course. Start with changes you can stay with. Working out at the gym every day and sharply limiting your diet may sound like good ideas—and you may have the best of intentions— but are those actions you’ll follow through on in February? By focusing on a few positive steps and feeling the success that they bring, it’s much more likely you’ll build on that progress. And you deserve to feel that sense of achievement when you’re making the effort. This is your life we’re talking about.
So, here are my top four suggestions for a healthier 2017: 1. Walk even 20 minutes more each day. A research study by European cardiologists suggests that doing so can add three to seven years to one’s life. There’s other evidence to prove it helps prevent or help control heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis. It can improve your balance, coordination, and mood. If you’re trying to lose weight, it’s a must. You’ll have more energy. And it’s something virtually everyone can do. 2. Make the healthiest food choice available at the time. I really encourage my patients— whether they’re concerned with weight or not—to become increasingly aware of what they’re eating and how it affects their body. That awareness will allow you to balance what you need to feel and function your best. 3. Connect with the good people around you. One of the best things you can do for your health and well-being is to interact with others. Look for people beyond your own family with whom you share an interest. It’s easy to become isolated during the winter months. Make this the year you reach out and make new connections. 4. Know how often you should check in with your doctor. If you have no chronic health problems, seeing your physician once a year is reasonable. If you do have an ongoing health concern, she or he will probably recommend a visit twice each year, or as your condition requires. Persons with diabetes should generally come in every four months for best blood glucose control. Ask your physician what’s right for you.
Here’s to your healthiest year possible. Colorado native Joseph Lovato, DO, is a board-certified family medicine physician caring for all ages. He practices at CHPG Primary Care Northglenn (formerly Complete Family Care), 11310 Huron Street, Suite 100, in Northglenn. To schedule an appointment, please call 303-925-4790. Skiing Tips for New Colorado Skiers By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS
Colorado is definitely the quintessential place for world class skiing but getting started can be overwhelming if you are a new skier or taking the entire family. With so many resorts to choose from, where do you start? How can you head up the mountain for a great day on the slopes without breaking the bank?
T
hough all the resorts offer incredible skiing, some are better suited for beginners. Winter Park is a great resort for beginners. Winter Park has nearly 30 percent of their terrain as beginner trails. At the base, there are gentle slopes to learn on and then beginners can progress to short chair lifts as they become more comfortable. They then can ride almost to the top and still enjoy greens all they way back to the village. Breckenridge is another great place for beginners. Breckenridge’s Peak 9 is an entire lower mountain dedicated to beginners including a teaching terrain. The runs are long and wide, allowing room for skiers to learn at their own pace. Larger resorts often offer more amenities but there are many pros of going to a smaller resort. Lift tickets and ski schools can be half the price of costs at larger resorts. Another advantage includes smaller crowds. Granby Ranch is just 80 miles west of Denver and is a family-owned resort perfect for kids learning to ski. Parking is close to the lifts and the best part is that all trails begin at one point up top and end at the base, allowing everyone to ski at their own pace without getting lost. Eldora is another great smaller resort to visit without having to fight the I-70 west traffic. Eldora is 680 acres with 11-lifts but there is an entire section for beginners. This a great option if you feel like skiing but want to stay a bit more local. Taking an entire family skiing can get very expensive very fast. However, there are plenty of tips and tricks that can help save you money. If you know where and when you are going, www.liftopia. com allows you to buy in advance for a steep discount. Some ski stores, as well as King Soopers and Costco, sell discounted lift tickets. If you can wait until January to hit the slopes, visit www.skiandsnowboardmonth.org for deals on beginner packages that include lift tickets, lessons, and rentals. Other deals can be found by purchasing gas at Shell Stations in January, in the Entertainment Coupon book,
20
THE BROOMFIELDER™ JANUARY 2017
and buying multiple day packs after season passes are no longer sold. Vail Resorts’ participating Epic Pass resorts offer four or five days of free skiing to kindergarten through fifth grade students. If you are lucky enough to have a fifth grader, Colorado Ski Country USA's 5th grade Passport Program provides participants with three free days of skiing or snowboarding at each of their 20 member resorts. If your fifth grader has never skied before, Colorado Ski Country USA’s First Class Program offers 5th graders the chance to receive one full-day beginner, level one group lesson, and an equipment rental package for absolutely free! After deciding where to ski and securing your lift ticket, finding good reasonably priced equipment is the last piece. If you can rent before you head up to the mountains you can get rentals for as cheap as $16-$30 a day. The downside of renting local is if you end up having an issue with your equipment once you are up in the mountains it is a challenge to remedy. Checking online is another way to save some money. You can save 20-25% if you reserve your equipment online. One of the best ways to save money if you are planning on skiing at least a few times during the season is to consider season long rentals for both the kids and adults. If your kids hit a growth spurt mid-season or need an upgrade in equipment, many ski shops will let you swap gear for something that will work.
Colorado is known for its amazing skiing but often comes with a hefty price. With a little bit of research and knowing a few tips you can take the entire family skiing without breaking the bank.

Snow Removal in Broomfield Takes Careful Planning and a Dedicated Team By Elizabeth Buckingham
Imagine this: deepest winter has finally arrived. You’re an operator on one of Broomfield’s 12 snowplows and a ferocious storm has brought fresh snow to the metro area. It’s pitch-dark and bitterly cold when you start your shift, and since you and the rest of your team keep a constant eye on the weather, you know that the steadily dropping temperatures won’t be kind to the roads. You know the city streets like you know your own face and love operating the massive snowplow safely and efficiently. You meet with your team to determine your route and identify your “twelfth plow,” a supervisor at the ready to assist as and where needed. Assignments are distributed and you’re out on the plow for a twelvehour shift in grim weather conditions that leave softer souls huddling in their beds.
22
THE BROOMFIELDER™ JANUARY 2017
in session. These major roads are plowed and de-iced no matter the severity of the storm; residential streets are plowed and de-iced once snow accumulation reaches four inches or greater. Residential streets are only given one central pass; this decision is based specifically on safe access for emergency vehicles and reflects careful use of taxpayer dollars. Wells said, “there are over 6,000 driveways in Broomfield, and it’s not exactly cost-effective for the city to plow all of them.” Residents should be aware that they’re responsible for removing snow from their own sidewalks after a storm; the city makes every effort to plow residential streets in the center, so that equal windrows are created to either side. Additional passes simply means that the windrows grow larger and larger and possibly end up on sidewalks, where they become virtually impossible for residents armed only with snow shovels to remove. Broomfield’s snowplows are kept at the ready from September 1 through June 1 each year, and about half the fleet doubles as dump trucks during the summer months. When not plowing, these trucks might remove construction debris or act as sweeper trucks. The plows are also equipped with sophisticated GPS systems, which allow supervisors to view the plows in real time. Broomfield is just over 33 square miles in size; the plows might cover around 1,300 miles during an average storm. If you’re wondering how you can best help these public servants do their jobs safely and efficiently, the answer is to give them plenty of room. Always pay attention to road conditions, especially in inclement weather, and stay at least three hundred feet back from any plow. Giving the plow operators plenty of space helps make winter driving easier for all of us! Photo Submitted by Emilie Royer
Winter has been relatively kind thus far this season, but this dramatic scenario happens every year in our region – and our streets are kept safe and clear by an incredible team of hardworking city employees. Broomfield has a fleet of twelve 56,000 lb. snowplows working eleven different routes around the city; a supervisor operates the twelfth plow, providing operations support and extra assistance, especially in conjunction with emergency response teams. Operators work twelve hours on and twelve hours off; “as soon as it starts to snow, we’re out,” said Geoff Wells, Broomfield’s Superintendent of Street Services. Snowplow operators take great pride in their work and are often called in on holidays or in the middle of the night, and their primary focus is “safety for all Broomfield residents.” It’s common for residents to complain about snowplows during winter, but it’s important to remember that “the Streets Division is responsible for snow and ice control,” not snow and ice removal. A detailed map can be found at www.broomfield.org that highlights the city’s first- and second-priority streets. These include major thoroughfares plus “feeder” roads to those major thoroughfares; priority roads may shift somewhat depending on whether school is

Find out at Themescape Escape Rooms, the metro area’s latest offering in a hot new trend of escape room facilities that allow players to star in their own adventure story. Themescape now has a location in Broomfield. Up to eight people are locked in one of the facility’s two themed rooms and must work together to solve the clues that will release them from the room. The SpaceScape room puts players in the role of space explorers, stuck in darkness on a doomed ship, who must locate and disengage the selfdestruction sequence. The Secret Catacombs room asks players to solve a mysterious murder while proving their innocence in the crime. The challenging rooms are ideal for corporate and private events, as well as for families, groups of friends or date nights. The puzzles are designed for young adults and up.
If watching a movie rather than participating in a movie-like experience is more your speed, sit back and relax in one of AMC Flatiron Crossing’s luxurious reclining chairs and enjoy Hollywood’s best offerings. Adults can enjoy a cocktail at the theater’s bar before the movie starts, and moviegoers of all ages will enjoy the variety of hot food and concession snacks available during the movie. January is a perfect time to catch up on many of the recently released films that are contenders to take home Oscars in February. Among the highly regarded end-of-year titles are Martin Scorsese’s “Silence,” which follows the trials and tribulations of two 17th-century missionaries who travel to Japan to find their missing mentor. Also on the big screens in January will be Denzel Washington’s “Fences,” a drama set in the 1950s about a former baseball player who discourages his son from pursuing his football dreams. The film touches on themes of race relations in America.

TOUR
By Dan Powers
There is a flourishing network of local destinations for those with a taste for adult beverages – Broomfield has matched the reputation already widely held throughout Colorado for nurturing a range of entrepreneurial purveyors of wine, beer, and spirits. Whether you have a specific flavor you prefer or have a curiosity across the alcoholic spectrum, here’s a suggested itinerary to get you into some of Broomfield’s favorite drinking emporiums. (Note: the designated driver rule and services like Uber and Lyft make such excursions safer and more convenient too.)
You can’t go wrong starting your tour at Wonderland Brewing Company, voted by our readers as Broomfield’s Best Brewery in our Talk of the Town issue in November 2016. Their brews will lure you: in fact they’re “brewed to make you smile.” 12 taps offer a variety of flavors and styles including special reserves. The expanse of the place will astound you: ping pong tables, live music, games, food trucks rotating through the week, TVs, Ladies Night specials, and they even had a giving tree supporting A Precious Child over the holidays. Consider joining the Mad Hopper Club for drink discounts, first sips on new brews, event prompts, free pong, and more.

Not too far away you’ll find Big Choice Brewing, which offers a comfortable tasting room with the feel of an old friend’s college townhome with games, couches, and TVs upstairs and taps on the main level serving regulars like you’re sitting around the kitchen with friends. Consider going early on #WeirdWednesday as weird beers are tapped at 3:00 p.m. Or go for their well-known Disconnected Red Amber Ale that started it all or one of numerous classics and seasonal brews. If you’re in the right mood you might even meet ST. FUADIT there. Check their website for directions as the 120th Ave. construction is a challenge – but worth the maze.
We are honored to be voted Best Brewery in Broomfield! In the same part of town you’ll find the Rails End Beer Company: they “are here to celebrate life’s journey” and have made a fast positive impression since opening in August. Friday Night Flights (1/2 off flight of five) could compel your visit; the Double IPA with grapefruit, citrus, and tangerine is a miracle of flavor. Ladies’ nights and the everpopular Geeks Who Drink on Tuesdays should pull you away from your couch too.

BHS Winter Sports Teams
Prepare to Continue Fall Momentum By Sawyer Giles
With a successful Broomfield Eagle sports fall season in which four teams reached the finals (cross country, football, soccer, and softball), and with cross country earning state championship honors and finishing 7th nationally in Oregon in early December, the Broomfield High School winter sports teams are ready to keep the championship momentum rolling.
The question remains: can Broomfield keep up their success?
Michael Georgiton from the boys varsity team. Photo by Kendall Lockwood
Terrence Dunn, head coach of the varsity boys basketball program believes so. He said his team can build off of last year’s success. “Last year was a great year to get back on the winning end of things after two tough years,” said Dunn. “If we play well and to the best of our abilities, I think we will really have a good year, and we will be able to compete in our conference and also state-wide.” Dunn will be joined on the court by former girls varsity head coach, Mike Croell. “I took a year off,” said Croell, “and it wasn’t all bad, but when you’ve been doing something for 29 years in some capacity, there’s a void in your life. I was fortunate enough to have Mr. Dunn ask me to help out. I’d like to still be a part of things ... and if I can help out, great. It’s a different role, but it’s a fun role.” The girl’s varsity team, led by second-year coach Derek Seifried, was disappointed when eliminated in the quarterfinal last year. With the loss of several important senior players last year, the team is looking

to more-than fill those huge shoes with senior players like Jenna Casasanta, Abby Croell, Taylor Gilmore, and Juliet Steinhauer. “We will focus on perfect effort every time we step on the basketball court. Growth mindset will go a long way in making us better,” Seifried said. Girls swimming has some changes on the horizon. For the 2016-17 season, CHSAA has added a new 3A classification that affects Broomfield, which will drop from the 5A classification to the 4A classification. As one of the top teams in the 4A classification, Broomfield will most likely have a less arduous time of making it to state. Lastly, wrestling is looking for a deep run this season. Coached by three-time state champion, Patrick DeCamillis, the team is in a promising position, especially with junior Mason Watt who has a chance at an individual state title. Since 2005, the Eagle wrestlers have won four state team titles.

Eagle Theater Programs Offer
Numerous Opportunities for Talented Students By Chase Hull
Jenn Bryner undertook an exciting task this year when she became the new director of the theater program at Broomfield High School. On January 27 and 28, the theater ensemble will be performing four student-directed one-act plays. These plays allow students the chance to “take the [producer’s] reins and run with them,” said Bryner. This is accomplished by utilizing various seasoned students’ talents, many of whom have been part of the organization for years. Those who specialize in a specific field, whether they possess technological prowess or are gifted on stage, can submit a proposal of a one-act play that they want to produce. Once approved, these students are able to cast and direct the plays themselves. Bryner is happy that “[she] just gets to sit back and watch.” The first musical of the year she will oversee is a production of Legally Blonde showing on April 6, 7, and 8. This year, as every year, the theater organization is taxed by available space in the auditorium, which proves difficult when trying to create a “two-story sorority house that has to be built and painted on stage,” Bryner said, when reflecting on the musical. Despite this, she is excited for the musical production. The thespians at BHS pride themselves on playing an active role in the Broomfield community. This past Halloween, 15 students, supervised by Mrs. Bryner, partook in an event called “Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat.” Students went door to door trick or treating and “instead of asking for candy, they asked for canned goods and nonperishable items to donate

to FISH,” said Bryner, who is excited for future volunteer opportunities. Broomfield High School has had notable performances at past state competitions. State theater consists of more than 4,000 students who are divided into individual event rooms to be judged. At the end, top performers are chosen to compete in front of everyone. Bryan Lucchesi, 11, was the only Broomfield student who brought his individual event (monologues) to Nationals last year. “Bryan is easy to work with, dedicated, friendly, and incredibly intelligent, which makes him a fierce performer,” Bryner said. Lucchesi is surely someone to look out for this year as he will be attempting a completely different event at state, musical theater. Bryner invites the entire community to attend this year’s productions as she believes they are “don’t miss performances,” and that “people will have a great time coming to see them.”

Broomfield Musicians
Sing, Play, and Lead with Eagle Pride By Jenna Bergesser
With many admirable performers and new music to astonish audiences, Broomfield’s performing artists are on the rise. The choir, band, and orchestra are looking forward to another season full of success and growth. Second-year Band Director Ruben Romero, is impressed with how the year is going. He believes that the marching band has continued to grow more than any other band in the state, and overall he is very pleased with how invested each player is in the music. The band also has some key players and groups who have made an impact on their success. Romero predicts great things, saying, “Our percussion ensemble this year is really great, we have some awesome players. We also have a skillful low brass section. [Freshman] Sawyer Johnson is a really great saxophone player as well.” Reflecting on a year’s growth and learning, Romero said, “Last year there were a lot of things just kind of thrown at me all of the time ... this year has been a lot easier for me.”
Broomfield’s Performing Arts Schedule • Band - February 22, 23 • Band - March 22 • Band - May 17 • Orchestra - February 9, 10, 11 • Orchestra - March 14 • Orchestra - May 19 • Choir - February 16, 17, 18 • Choir - March 9 • Choir - May 12, 13

Turning to orchestra, Renee Beri, the director, is impressed with the many talented players. Carly Compesi, 10, and Sofie Forrey, 11, have recently been selected to play with an outside group at Western States Honor Orchestra Festival. Overall, the orchestra is continuing to develop and impress as the year goes on. Clelyn Brown has been the choir director at Broomfield since the fall of 2011. Since taking over the program, Brown and the choir have continued to dazzle the audience at each performance. Although things have been busy with just one director, students are taking on leadership roles and stepping up to help when needed. “We have more student leadership within rehearsals and kids teaching one another and organizing different things. They take it upon themselves to make the program better,” Brown said. The Belles have been one of the major components to a successful choir. Because they are able to learn collegiate-level repertoire quickly, they go above and beyond with more difficult music. Overall, this season looks bright for Broomfield’s performing artists who are sure to impress at each performance.

2017
Please join The Broomfielder™ in recognizing and celebrating Broomfield Business Leaders who are making a difference in their company, their industry, and our community.
In
this issue, we are proud to announce The Broomfielder’s 2017 Business Leaders. Nominations are now being accepted for Broomfield businesspeople that made an impact in 2016. As Broomfield grows and thrives, it is our business community that lifts us up, from the small mom and pop restaurants and boutiques, to the large global companies that employ many who live here. “As our community continues to expand, we wanted to recognize the leaders who have helped build the strong economic foundation of our community,” said Mike Garrison, owner of Loudmouth Media LLC and publisher of The Broomfielder™. “Broomfield is home to a broad and diverse set of businesses, many making great impacts on our town, the North Metro, and even our state. The Broomfielder’s 2017 Business Leaders will shine a light on the leaders behind these companies – both small and large – and highlight their accomplishments.” In partnership with a committee of community leaders and representatives, The Broomfielder™ will select honorees for small and large business leaders based on your nominations, who will be recognized this spring at a special event and also in the April issue of the magazine. Nominations will be accepted through 5:00 p.m. on February 17, 2016. Nominations will be judged solely on the information provided on the nomination forms. So, be sure to fill in the form completely and give a thorough explanation for each question. No attachments, weblinks or mailed supplements will be accepted. Look for additional details in the February issue of The Broomfielder or access the nomination form at www.loudmouthmedia.com/2017BFBL/. Also watch The Broomfielder™ on Facebook for updates at www.facebook.com/TheBroomfielder.
As part of the nomination you will be asked to provide: • Details on leadership in business, community involvement and other achievements that you believe qualify the individual for recognition • Specific information and examples of the individual’s leadership in business • Specific information and examples of the individual’s community involvement • Specific information and examples of the company’s role in the community
