Family Winter Sports

Colorado is known for its very active population. Even when there is tons of snow on the ground or frightfully cold weather, you will often see residents out and about jogging, sledding, skating, and of course partaking in the most popular winter sport in our state, skiing. Colorado has plenty of fun winter activities for the entire family.

I

am sitting down to write this late at night a few days before Christmas and the night before press day, after spending the evening indulging in what it means to be “part” of a small town and for that town to be part of you. If you have read many of my columns, you know that I have lived here in Broomfield most of my life and that the roots are deep. An old friend came home for a visit tonight, which catalyzed a meeting of people who had not gathered in years and years. Our friend Harold lost his wife this fall after a three year battle with cancer. A visit home was just one part of the next phase of his journey. As I left the bar, it struck me how the most horrible thing that can happen to someone – such as the loss of a spouse – can lead to a wonderful reconnection of more than a dozen people. Harold brought together old friends who had not seen each other in decades – the type of friends that despite the years, it feels like you last spoke to them yesterday. Friends who together grew up in this place, and who are bound by the borders of this town, and who by growing up here together, share memories and experiences that make us family. I guess death is like that. Unfortunately, it is in the “after” that we come together. One of life’s ironies. There are many things we don’t think about or do until struck by tragedy. Why? What are we waiting for? It reminded me how I reconnected with my high school sweetheart after learning that his father had a stroke. Would I have found my way back to my now husband without that bad news causing me to pick up the phone? Who knows? The silver linings of misfortune. Last month I wrote about peace. Finding it and making it. I guess this is a little similar. Harold has been sharing some thoughts and messages with some of us as he grieves his wife. One of those thoughts: Live your life. The calendar is turning. It is the start of 2018. What are you waiting for? What do you need to DO? Who do you need to see? Where are you headed and why and when? Don’t wait. Do what you need to do. Do what you WANT to do. See who you need to see. Reconnect with the people who fill your soul. Do the things that bring you joy. Live your life. Start today.

Happy New Year and thanks for reading,

Tina Eichner 6

HAPPENINGS

COMMUNITY JANUARY 17 Skip cooking and bring your family and friends to dine on delicious Japanese food while raising money for the Broomfield Sister City Youth Exchange Program. Hana Matsuri restaurant at 2821 West 120th Avenue in Westminster, is generously donating 15% of the night’s sales – dine in or carry out – to the Sister Cities Program. Want to learn more about Broomfield’s exchange program with Ueda, Japan? Are you interested in hosting a Japanese exchange student in August 2019? Want to learn about being a delegate for Broomfield’s trip to Ueda in 2018? Join Sister City Committee members, 2016 student delegates, and prior host families from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for the fundraising dinner at Hana Matsuri, to ask questions about the program, to hear about participant experiences, and to complete host family applications. The mayors of Broomfield and Maruko, Japan, signed the first “Friendship City” document in May, 2001. In 2005, Maruko and other smaller municipalities merged to become part of the larger community of Ueda. Broomfield’s and Ueda’s mayors signed an updated agreement in 2006. A Broomfield City Council memorandum authorized the agreement now in use. The “Friendship City” relationship states that the program’s intent is to: •

Provide opportunities for city officials and citizens to experience and explore other cultures through long-term community partnerships.

Create an atmosphere in which economic and community development can be implemented and strengthened.

Stimulate environments through which communities will creatively learn, work, and solve problems together through reciprocal cultural, educational, municipal, business, professional, and technical exchanges and projects.

A delegation from Broomfield will be traveling to Ueda in July and August 2018. Applications are now being accepted. If you can’t make it on January 17 but still have questions, visit https:// broomfieldsistercities.weebly.com/ or email broomfieldsc@gmail.com

Resolution: The act of being determined upon a course of action. Procrastination: To put off until another day or time. These two words have very different meanings, but around New Year’s Eve they always seem so similar. Why is it that we resolve to do the important things we know we should do, and then spend the next 365 days doing other things? One of the things this often applies to is estate planning. Procrastinating in this area can cause your family to spend large amounts of your hard-earned wealth taking care of you and your assets during a disability late in life. It can also result in a complete mess upon your death, causing your children and other family members to fight, potentially destroying relationships. Lack of planning can cause unintended consequences resulting in the wrong beneficiaries receiving more than you intended, or your children writing a big check to the government. These unintended consequences won't bother you after you're incapacitated or dead. But if they bother you now, why are you resolving to worry about them for another year? Do something about it! We are confident that taking the time to do your estate planning won't make you die any sooner, and we are confident it won't make you live any longer. But we do know for certain that a properly designed and implemented estate plan will make life a whole lot easier on your family, both emotionally and financially. So instead of Resolution or Procrastination, why don't you commit to Completion? If you would like to learn more about an effective estate planning process that is producing results for families, attend one of our complementary workshops.

an OB/GYN specializing in Gynecologic Oncology, I see many women with cervical cancer or whose testing shows pre-cancerous cells. This type of cancer begins in the cellular lining of the cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus. When it is detected and treated early, the five-year survival rate for those with invasive cervical cancer is 91%. And more cervical cancers are being found earlier thanks to two tests: the Pap smear, which collects cells from the cervix during a pelvic exam for microscopic evaluation, and the human papillomavirus (HPV) test, which can be done at the same time. That’s very good news for women and their families. There’s even better news. Because cervical cancer is directly linked to HPV infections (as are many cancers of the throat, penis, anus, vagina, and vulva), we now can prevent most cases with the HPV vaccine. The vaccine is safe and it is effective, protecting against as many as nine different strains of the HPV virus. Both the American Cancer Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommend this vaccination series for boys and girls to protect them in later life. It’s recommended that most adolescents receive two doses of the HPV vaccine starting at age 11, but each young person’s needs should be addressed with her or his primary care provider. The Center for Disease Control advises that the vaccine only be given to young men up to age 21 and to young women up to age 26. While prevention is certainly our goal, intervention for cervical cancer today is much improved over decades past. Most women do not know they have it until they receive an abnormal Pap test or it is found during a pelvic exam. A biopsy (tissue collection) called colposcopy is then performed using an instrument with a special lens. Treatment is highly individualized, but often involves surgery, radiation therapy or chemotherapy. I encourage every young woman to talk with her provider about the HPV-cervical cancer connection. And I encourage every parent to make HPV vaccination part of their child’s preventive health plan.

BHS Theatre Students Prepare for Production of Heathers;

Suicide Awareness Campaign By Annabelle Lingbeck

This winter, the BHS theatre program will be putting on: Heathers, the musical. Though the show isn’t until February, Ms. Bryner is already planning. The high school version of Heathers, while excluding some of the language and suggestive scenes of the popular cult movie, will stay true to the message of the story. It brings light to sensitive topics like teen suicide and sexual assault, and will introduce awareness to these problems in the form of a musical. “It’s important that we don’t shy away from those topics, and it’s important that we address them because we don’t want it to seem normalized in our society that these things happen,” said Ms. Bryner. To help contribute and spread awareness about these problems, the program will be organizing a campaign, which is going to be headed by Francie Traxler. The #makeitbeautiful campaign will be donating money to a women’s shelter and setting up booths to educate students on suicide awareness. They are still looking into which shelter they will donate to, but expect information on it soon. A musical like Heathers is the perfect platform to help spread awareness on abuse and suicide and the theatre program is prepared to work hard and help people in need, as well as deliver a great performance in the show. In addition to preparing for the production of Heathers, the theater program attended the Thespian Convention in Colorado Springs from December 6-8. ThesCon is a theater arts competition attended by schools across Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico. There, students get the opportunity to train and participate in workshops on acting, directing, playwriting, and many other skills needed to grow their experience. They also get to see many productions put on

20

by high schools and college theater groups. Broomfield High School attends ThesCon every year and this year 11 acts qualified for Nationals in Lincoln, Nebraska. This is also the first year Broomfield brought an improv group of 17 students to compete as well as a group act. The group act, performing an all female rendition of the Tarantino Variation, consisted of Thespians Alyson Rotman, Avery Sandstrum, and Francie Traxler, and the three impressed the judges enough to earn them a spot at Nationals. Support your fellow thespians this winter, and look out for information on the campaign and the show.

BHS Sports Teams Gear Up to

Pursue State Glory By Jack Vanderberg

With snow beginning to fall and the very short amount of daylight, it’s safe to say that winter is officially here, which means Broomfield High School’s winter sports teams are preparing to come out and compete for more state banners.

The Boys’ Basketball Team has been hard at work since September, when the first official open-gym workouts were scheduled, but most of the boys have been anticipating this upcoming season since the end of last year. “We have a lot of kids in fall sports but we still get a really good turnout and get a good intense workout during our open gyms,” said head coach Terrence Dunn. The team has plenty of capable athletes, but one big game-changer is the return of Devin Martinez. Coming off of a season-ending wrist injury last year, Martinez is back and will take a role as a team leader and a playmaker. The Girls’ Basketball Team has hit a few rough patches the last few years with the changes in coaching staff and new players. But this season, with third-year coach Derek Seifred and plenty of returning players, the team will take a big jump back into championship-competing form. Seifred talked about junior Steph Peterson, a varsity player since her freshman year, and said she “has really matured on and off the court. I expect big things out of Steph.” With a fairly young team full of chemistry, the team is ambitious and hoping for some post-season action this year. Another winter sport, which many people don’t know about, is The Ski Team. The school doesn’t have an actual team, but does have Broomfield High School representatives on the Nederland High School team. Senior Jared Smerdell, a 4-year member of the team and a skiing prodigy, describes practice as “pretty relaxed. We have a schedule and stuff but as far as the other teams we go against, like Aspen and Summit, ours is the most casual out of all of them because I feel like a lot of people are on the team just to go skiing.” With the team graduating some good racers from last season, this season will open some opportunities for the younger skiers to step up.

Girls Swim, not always being the biggest of winter sports, continues to grow every year. With lots of returning swimmers accompanied by some new swimmers, head coach Emily Austin says her goals for this season “are that the girls improve with their times and achieve their own goals. Everyone is going to have different goals, and really my goal as a coach is to help them achieve their own goals.” This year, a notable swimmer is Kirsten Kerwin. As a senior at Holy Family (who does not have a swim team), Kerwin comes and represents for the Broomfield team, and she represents well. Being a top competitor for four years now, her biggest goal as a senior is to connect with all of her teammates and to motivate them to do their best. The team is lucky to have a leader like Kerwin diving into the season. The Wrestling Team, of all of Broomfield’s winter sports, is looking at maybe the strongest comeback season. With a team stacked with seniors and many strong returning athletes, they easily have the strength and skill to earn a championship. The most important thing to keep in mind, however, is their mindset and work ethic. Coach Pat DeCamillis says that his athletes simply need to “show up and compete. And if we do our job, we’re going to be alright.” Senior captain Drew Worthley is on the same page as his coach. Worthley says the most important thing this season is “to train as hard as we ever have. This is the last year the senior class will be able to compete with the team and we have got to hit it hard.” With all of this to offer, the wrestling team is looking to grab this season by the horns. The city and students of Broomfield are all interested to see how well our winter sports teams compete this season. Let’s bring home some banners this year! Broomfield High’s Music Programs

Strive to Reach New Heights By Maggie Peck

Broomfield High School has a variety of music programs that students are able to take advantage of. Band, orchestra, and choir programs are becoming more skilled every year, constantly changing to reach higher goals.

Choir has a new director this year, Michael Bizzaro, who is creating relationships with the students while still putting together music that matches the skill set of the group. “I think the students have begun to understand and say to themselves ‘okay this is the way he works, it might be kind of weird but there’s a method to the madness.’ If they just trust the process, then they start to realize that there’s always improvement to be had no matter who the teacher is,” said Bizzaro. We’re creating an experience, not just a sound.” Their shows earlier this year have been a success, and the choirs are eager to prepare for what is to come. The orchestra is learning new music for their concert in the spring. Director Ms. Beri said she’s “excited to move forward,” and hopes for a higher attendance for their performances so that more guests can enjoy their hard work. At the CHSAA competition, BHS is always toward the top of the leaderboard getting nearly a perfect score every single year. Sophomore Sophia Jones said, “I love orchestra because the people in it are so fun and we all love one thing: music. I love being able to take a break from my day and just be able to only focus on playing my instrument. We always play a good mix of classical and contemporary, I love it!” Broomfield’s band is a disciplined yet lively group creating inspirational and catchy sounds. They’re getting better and better every year, constantly pushing themselves to achieve new standards of excellence. Director Mr. Romero is guiding the band to be at a “different level,” and they are working to achieve his vision. The winter percussion is an additional band group that practices after school. It’s basically

22

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JANUARY 2018

the “winter equivalent to marching band, but with only percussion instruments,” said Romero. They’re back and ready to face their competition this season. Last year, the group placed fifth in the Percussion Scholastic Concert Open class at the International World Championships in Dayton, Ohio. They also placed second in state, only losing by a tenth of a point. The ensemble is eager to compete in the upcoming months. Ruben Romero is also the head coach of the winter guard, with Mya Romero, Maggie Leone, and Lizzy Clayton as team captains. Their state competition is in early April, for the arts assembly. The guard is striving to perform the best possible routines to keep their audience hooked and ultimately win overall. Broomfield High School is setting higher and higher standards every year in band, orchestra, choir, winter percussion, and winter guard. Representing the school, these programs are enthusiastic about what is to come.

Family Winter

Sports By Sara Lynn Baker, MS, CSCS

Colorado is known for its very active population. Even when there is tons of snow on the ground or frightfully cold weather, you will often see residents out and about jogging, sledding, skating, and of course partaking in the most popular winter sport in our state, skiing. Exercise is so important for overall health and it is important to teach our children the importance of physical activity from a young age. Children learn many behaviors from their parents and physical activity is definitely one of them. Colorado has plenty of fun winter activities for the entire family.

Ice Skating One of the best winter activities that the entire family can enjoy is ice skating. Outdoor ice skating is especially fun. Broomfield residents are very fortunate to have a close outdoor ice skating rink at the Steinbaugh Pavilion in Louisville. This rink, the largest outdoor rink in the country, is 6,500 square feet and has skate rentals, concessions, and music. The outdoor rink is open on holidays and even has extended hours during winter break. If you want to take a large group, group rates and private parties are also available. If you would still like to skate but the weather is not cooperating, The Ice Centre at the Promenade in Westminster has a great indoor rink.

24

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JANUARY 2018

Sledding Sledding is another great activity for kids of all ages. There are plenty of great sledding spots in and around Broomfield. Broomfield Commons Park at 13221 Sheridan has a great hill located near the vending area of the athletic fields. The hill is not very long but allows for plenty of sledders and is a great place for beginners or younger sledders. The Commons also has ample parking. The soccer fields next to Legacy High School have a fairly short and steep hill but it is quite wide to allow for lots of sledders. In Lafayette, Autumn Ash Park, off North 111th Street at Beacon Hill and Lucerne Drive also has a nice hill for family sledding with young children.

Snowshoeing Snowshoeing does not require special skills and is a great activity for families to enjoy together. Snowshoeing is essentially walking in the snow and there is a minimal learning curve. If you want to try it, you can rent snowshoes at Nordic centers, often found at mountain resorts or retailers like REI. Renting is great way to try the variety of brands and types of snowshoes before purchasing. Rocky Mountain National Park, Devil’s Thumb Ranch near Tabernash, Breckenridge, and Frisco, all boast miles of trails but if you want to stay closer to home, Mud Lake in Boulder County has a great beginner trail.

Skiing For the ultimate winter sport, Colorado of course has tons of world class skiing available. However, if you are not willing to brave the I-70 traffic, Eldora in Nederland, just 20 miles west of Boulder is a great place to ski and is especially family friendly. Though still fairly close to the Front Range, the top elevation at Eldora is 10,600 feet and offers a variety of terrain for all ability levels. For children learning to ski, Eldora has the Woodward Hub, which is an indoor progression area for balance, coordination, and skill development. Eldora also participates in the 5th Grade Passport program sponsored by Colorado Ski Country. This program gives 5th graders 3 free days of skiing and snowboarding at 22 of Colorado’s premier mountains with no parent purchase required. Snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing are all available at Eldora as well.

"Game for Giving" Lastly, if the weather is just too cold to get outside and you still want to ‘participate’ in a sporting activity, the City of Broomfield is offering “Game for Giving.” By giving $25 to a local non-profit you will score a two-ticket voucher to the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche or a Colorado Mammoth game. Purchase a voucher in-person at the George DiCiero building or online through March 10th. Donations will benefit Meals on Wheels and A Precious Child. Visit www.broomfield.org for details. We are so fortunate to live in a state that has many year round activities. Regardless of the weather this winter, make time for some fun family activities! Have A

Out and About in Broomfield... From East to West

It’s Friday night and it’s been a long week. Time to relax and have a drink! Staying close to home is a good … idear. Here are just a few Broomfield spots that are rather near. 28

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JANUARY 2018

North Side Tavern 12708 Lowell Blvd, Broomfield

Experience Colorado craft food, beer, and hospitality at the North Side Tavern. Enjoy an ever changing fleet of Colorado Tap beers and locally made Spirits. North Side is a local, neighborhood, chef-driven, American tavern featuring classical bar fare with a twist. Stop in for live music Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m. or try their Colorado-inspired brunch on Saturday and Sunday, served from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. North Side offers a full lunch and dinner menu with classic bar food and local specialties.

I HOP IPA

12920 Lowell Blvd, Unit G, Broomfield Did you know that Broomfield has a specialty craft beer bar? I HOP IPA serves up hoppiness from all over the world. The owners work to find different beers that are not basic and not available everywhere – specializing in rare brews to share with other beer aficionados and served up in small batches. I HOP IPA taps beers that come from around the world, around the state, and the newest breweries, and rotates the beers sold weekly. Once the keg is empty, they put up something different. Fun spot to try new flavors.

Old Man Bar

4381 W 120th Ave, Broomfield As stated by the Old Man, “Let’s get one thing clear from the get-go: This place is a Road House, and I use that term in a most complimentary way. The Old Man is like the Kathmandu Market of pubs – lots of variety, something for everyone, and always a screaming deal to be had, including old school classics like Schlitz, Stroh’s, Olympia & Hamm’s – which regularly blow the doors off high-priced American lagers in blind taste tests.” The Old Man draws a diverse and robust crowd throughout the week and also serves up some amazing BBQ that you can smell all the way to Wal-Mart. Try the pulled pork with Kansas City Sweet and a side of hot links. Pool tables, games, sports on TV, and a great backyard with volleyball in the summer round out the fun at the Old Man.

If You Prefer

Coffee or Tea... Loftea Café 11542 Colony Row, Broomfield Stop in to a great family-owned coffee shop committed to sourcing products locally and featuring organic ingredients. Located in Arista near the 1st Bank Center, try Loftea for you favorite specialty coffee or tea drink as well hard to find local bites including: Breggos Baked Sandwiches, Bobo’s Oat Bars, Olomomo Nuts, Vuka Energy Drink, Big B’s Apple Juice & Lemonade, plus breakfast and lunch sandwiches, salads, soups, and smoothies (spring & summer only).

Master Tea 6600 W 120th Ave., Broomfield David from Taipei, Taiwan, owns and runs this tea/coffee shop, specializing in Bubble tea. Bubble tea (also known as pearl milk tea, bubble milk tea, boba juice, boba tea, or simply boba) is a Taiwanese tea-based drink invented in Tainan and Taichung in the 1980s. Most bubble tea recipes contain a tea base mixed with fruit or milk, to which chewy tapioca balls (known as bubbles, pearls, or boba) and fruit jelly (especially tropical fruits like lychee) are often added. Iceblended versions are usually mixed with fruit or syrup, resulting in a slushy consistency. Visit Master Tea and enjoy an authentic cultural experience!

The Colorado Keg House 8001 Arista Pl, Suite 110, Broomfield

When it comes to quality craft beer, there is no place quite like Colorado. Home to more than 300 independent breweries and the host of the annual Great American Beer Festival, you might say Colorado is the Napa Valley of the Beer Brewing World. The Colorado Keg House celebrates the wonder and variety of Colorado craft beer and scours the state to bring you the best IPAs, Pilsners, Lagers, Sours, and Stouts around – with 75 beers on tap! The Colorado Keg House offers a comfortable sports bar atmosphere. With 27 televisions, it is a great place to catch your favorite sports team or pay-per-view UFC fight. Bring your own food or order in from your favorite delivery place. The Colorado Keg House also offers a selection of Colorado wines and spirits. (Never drink and drive. Remember the designated driver rule, and services like Uber and Lyft make outings safer and more convenient too.) To view The Broomfielder™ online visit: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

Bringing People Together for 50 Years

The Up with People Influence By Bette Erickson

The anticipation builds and builds until it spills all over Saturday. That day you finally get to meet your Up with People (UWP) student. You’ve cleaned the spare bedroom, planned events, studied the UWP itinerary, and you’re eager to get started.

S

uch was the case each time my family and I hosted one of the performers training at the UWP world headquarters in Denver and Broomfield. Emiliano Enna from Italy, Chantal Guillaume from Belgium, and Cyril Hariga from France were three of the more than a dozen young adults my family and I got to host. This year the educational organization, whose mission is to inspire young people to make a positive difference, recognizes its 50th year. Using a platform of volunteer service wherever the students are staying, combined with musical performances, UWP participants hope to shatter cultural barriers and create goodwill throughout communities all over the world. And the students build lifelong friendships as well. Exchanging holiday cards, traveling to their home countries, staying in touch via social media are just some of the ways I continue to stay connected to some of my former UWP students. I’ve traveled to Switzerland to meet Emiliano’s family – and received tango lessons from his dance teacher father. Likewise, when

30

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JANUARY 2018

visiting France to see Cyril’s family I was able to truly become immersed in the Parisian lifestyle. (What a treat for a wannabe fashionista like me.) On a trip to Belgium, Chantal’s mother, Marietta DeLeenheer, escorted me throughout Brugge and Brussels and even gave me the keys to her vacation condominium on the coast of the North Sea. Several years later Chantal and her mother graciously hosted my young adult son and daughter as they were traveling through Europe. The value of the non-profit Up with People organization is vast and purposeful. Each group, called a cast, trains in Broomfield and elsewhere in the Denver-metro region. They then travel for a semester to nearly 20 communities across two or three continents spending about one week in each community. Semesters begin in January or July and throughout these programs the participants live with host families and participate in service projects, learn about different cultures through educational workshops, and perform in Up with People’s musical stage productions. One of the very first sold-out performances of Up with People was in September 1967 at New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall. Other early musical shows include locations such as the Hollywood Bowl, Kabuki-za in Tokyo, Japan, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Olympic Arena in Moscow. Up with People’s rich and expansive history is captured in various archives, museums, and special collections throughout the world. The performing arts school grooms participants to set goals and fulfill lifelong dreams. Among the notable and recognizable alumni and alumnae of the Up with People cast is actress Glenn Close. She was a leading featured vocalist during the 1960s before she went on to be an award-winning Hollywood actress. Up with People’s guiding principle is: Through music and action, we empower youth to be positive agents of change to build a more hopeful, trusting, and peaceful world. And it’s true – the UWP students my family and I hosted grew into successful and productive adults, now married with families and pursuing exciting and worthwhile careers shaped by their Up with People experiences. us what it truly means to be global citizens. And our family was better because of their influence. Coming up February 26 through March 5, 2018, Up with People celebrates its 50th anniversary with the production of “The Journey.” The exciting performance acknowledges that the UWP mission is an ongoing journey and is as relevant today as it was during its infancy in the 1960s. “The Journey” features historical highlights from throughout Up with People’s growth: from the 1960s to the new millennium along with short pop medleys from each era, and memorable, iconic international dances. Original songs will introduce timeless themes, including messages of hope, peace, and encouragement to go out and make a positive change in the world. How to Move Way Beyond

Cable TV By Dan Powers

The choices for dropping your huge monthly cable bill in 2018 are worth checking out! Today you can choose from a variety of non-cable options for sports, movies, news, talk shows, and any combination of programming that you wish, with likely savings compared with old-school cable packages. The benefits of using a streaming service rather than a cable service include the ability to watch shows wherever you go, the potential to use Cloud DVR to save shows for later, and the no-obligations contract that allows you to cancel your account without a termination fee. You also don’t need to rent a cable box. Note that each service has options on the types and number of devices you can watch content on simultaneously, i.e. laptop, phone, desktop, TV, or tablet and the browser and operating system you have – so if you have several family members using the service be sure to check the costs for specific access. Here are some options to consider to shape your viewing and budget this year.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JANUARY 2018

FuboTV started with a sports-stations

focus such as NBA TV and soccer, but also offers cable news channels like MSNBC, Fox News, Fox Business, and Fusion among its 75 channels for $40/ month. FuboTV includes a free cloudbased DVR for up to 10 shows or 30 hours of contents, such as NBA TV and plenty of soccer coverage. PlayStation Vue works with the popular PS4; it offers an unlimited DVR. You can record as many shows as you want for up to 28 days, with more than 80 channels if you go for the “elite” package at $55/month, and Vue allows you to stream on up to five devices simultaneously on your home network.

Direct TV Now from AT&T offers live

access to more than 60 live channels for $35/month. This includes popular stations, such as CNN, the Hallmark Channel, ESPN, the Disney Channel, HGTV, TBS, Discovery, Bravo, Animal Planet, and Bloomberg, among many others. You can also choose to add HBO, Starz or Showtime for an extra $5 to $8 per month. Hulu has various monthly plans with different prices and attendant amounts of commercials, providing live streaming for $40/month, and full seasons of different TV programs, including Hulu Originals. They also offer hit movies. Hulu restricts playback to 2 simultaneous streams at once and offers a free, cloud-based DVR that provides you with 50 hours of storage – no time limits or restrictions.

HBO Now is available as a streaming

service at $14.99 per month, with the first month free. HBO Now gives you access to all the programming of HBO, from original television shows to blockbuster movies.

Amazon Instant Video is $8.99/ month separately, or included for free in Amazon Prime at $99/year which includes various other Amazon benefits. Amazon’s options are on-demand related, not live streaming of broadcasts. Programming includes children’s shows, documentaries, famous old TV shows, and other programming available to rent as you wish.

Caveats on Cutting the Cord

Keep in mind as you look for cheap alternatives to cable TV that typically you are choosing from streaming services – meaning the quality of your home’s internet network is crucial. Plus, if you have your TV, Internet, and phone all bundled together you’ll need to do some more number crunching to figure out what makes sense – and you may be in a contract with a penalty charge if you “break up” with your current provider. Also, you may have to put together several options to get the content you want. For example, you may choose Amazon Prime Video, an HD antenna, and HBO Now to watch what you want. If so, the savings (and convenience) may not be enough to make the switch. If you have a slow Internet connection – 5Mbps or less – you can probably expect a lot of hiccups, stuttering, and low-resolution video. Expect to secure at least a 15-20Mbps range – perhaps even through a wired connection to your router – to be sure your experience is as seamless as you expect.

Sling TV offers similar channel options to

other services, but they also offers specialized on-demand channels: package upgrades are available as add-ons to the company’s Sling Orange (30 channels for $20 a month) and Sling Blue (45 channels for $25 a month) bundles. Examples: CuriosityStream — Includes access to 1,500 science, technology, and history documentaries. Cost: $6/ month. Pantaya —specializes in Spanishlanguage movies. Cost: $6/month. Sling offers DVR access for an extra $5/month for, including 50 hours of cloud storage with expiration dates. YouTube TV also offers great sports coverage,

local channels, and plenty of entertainment channels like FX, TNT, USA, and more for $35/month. YouTube TV offers unlimited recording storage for up to 9 months in the cloud. (Note: this is different than “YouTube Red” which you have probably seen a pop-up ad for nearly every time you use YouTube. “Red” is an ad-free version of YouTube.) Note: most of these services are available for 7-, 14-, or 30-day free trials. Finally, if you want to cut the cable and also not rely on the Internet, you can go truly basic with an HDTV Antenna (generally around $50) where the HD quality can also be even better than what you get over a cable line. You may need to get an amplified antenna to have better reception, but a nonamplified model can work depending on your location and where you place the antenna. Check the site AntennaWeb.org for helpful info on options around Broomfield.

Roku offers various streaming devices

you plug into your TV which play content from the internet, plus apps and online portals. Roku devices give you access to 500,000+ movies and TV episodes from top free and paid channels; you can also choose from various subscriptions.

Many TV networks have free full episodes on their website for a limited time after broadcast. For example, CBS offers a lot of free full episodes with even more when you sign up for CBS All Access $59.99/ yr with limited commercials or $99.99/ yr without commercials.
