une was a busy month all around town. One great event was the Mayor’s “State of the City Address,” Eggs & Issues, presented by the City of Broomfield, 36 Commuting Solutions, and the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce Government Relations Committee. Mayor Randy Ahrens shared details about our City’s growth, transportation and infrastructure projects, and upcoming civic events and activities. We will expand on his comments in upcoming issues. The Mayor’s remarks were highlighted for me by some of the recent rankings and statistics about Broomfield in the media. Here are just a few:

recently ranked 373 metropolitan statistical areas across 21 economic and work force indicators and announced Denver-Aurora-Broomfield ranked first nationally in its Leading Locations for 2015.

• According to FindtheBest and as reported in The Denver Business Journal, Broomfield County ranks second in the state, only behind Boulder, for technology jobs in Colorado.
• ValuePenguin has analyzed the most recent FBI Crime Report to determine the safest cities in Colorado. For large cities (those with a population of more than 20,000) Broomfield ranked as the 5th safest in the state.
No wonder our population continues to grow. With approximately 68,000 residents today, Broomfield is expected to reach 75,000 residents by 2020. The future is bright! Each year, The Broomfielder™ magazine’s pets issue is one of the most highly anticipated issues of the year. The entire staff just loves receiving all of the fun and furry photos of your treasured pets. Congratulations to this year’s cover winner Tyson, submitted by Chad Goolsby. Don’t miss all of the great photos in this issue on pages 22–24.

The food was delicious, the music inspiring, and the room was filled with great people and great energy. On behalf of The Broomfielder™, I would like to thank the Chamber of Commerce for partnering with us on Taste It this year. It was a wonderful evening and we are already looking forward to next year! Aurora Fox Arts Center presents Beets by Colorado playwright Rick Padden at the Broomfield Auditorium at 2:00 p.m. This is a historical-fiction play that reveals the story of how at the height of WWII, Berthoud, Colorado’s industrious sugar beet farmers were expecting a record harvest, but labor was in short supply – with most of the town’s young men overseas fighting Germany. Who could help them harvest their beets? Germans. There were 3,000 German POWs being held at Camp 202 in Greeley. Beets is a poignant story of bias yielding to circumstance, hatred bowing to compassion, and love escaping fences. All seats are $20. For information e-mail foxbox@auroragov.org.

Did You
TASTE IT Broomfield? What Makes a Great Event? Music, atmosphere, friends, and lots of fabulous food and delicious drinks. This year’s Taste It Broomfield had it all!
I
f you missed last month’s sold out Taste It Broomfield, mark your calendar to get tickets early for next year because you won’t want to miss out again! More than 600 people gathered at the 1ST BANK Center in Broomfield on June 11 for a cornucopia of food and drink presented by The Broomfield Chamber of Commerce and The Broomfielder™ Magazine, all designed to promote Broomfield’s evergrowing food, wine, and beer culture. The event was also sponsored by Copper Leaf Gardens & Event Center, Donelson Barry, LLC Attorneys and Counselors at Law, and the 1STBANK Center. “It was wonderful to see the community response to this event. With 600 people in attendance, we were happy that the majority of the vendors never ran out of food or beverages!” said Jennifer Kerr, president and CEO of the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce. “We are looking into expanding the event next year so more people can attend and more restaurants, breweries, and wineries can benefit from the great exposure.” “Taste It was a record-smashing success and stands as a great example of the positive things that can happen when local businesses and organizations partner together,” said Mike Garrison, owner and publisher of The Broomfielder™ Magazine. “We were proud to be part of this event and hope that Taste It continues to grow as a cornerstone event for the community each year.” Taste It attendees had the opportunity to vote for their favorite tastings throughout the evening. The award for Best Tasting Food went to Tiller’s Kitchen and Bar and the award for Best Tasting Beverage went to Kokopelli Beer Company. “The event was great this year. The layout of the space made for a great experience for us and the attendees. Open feel and great exposure in a really cool atmosphere. We can’t wait until next year and hope to keep

seeing this event grow,” commented Sean Rush of Tiller’s. “Events like Taste It Broomfield allow us to sample our beers and give information about our restaurant to new customers, which is key in the booming craft beer industry,” said Alicia Coulter of Kokopelli Beer Company. Taste It Broomfield also featured a food drive for Broomfield FISH at the event – and the attendees were very generous. “Taste It Broomfield was a summer highlight, with delicious local food and drinks, as well as great music! Broomfield FISH was delighted to participate as a community partner and our Youth Advisory Board collected more than 550 pounds of food and $100 in cash to support families in need,” shared Dayna Scott, executive director of Broomfield FISH. “No wonder the event sold out early! Be sure to plan ahead for next year, because you won’t want to miss all of the fun.” If you missed Taste It Broomfield this year, you can catch some of the flavor by visiting one of The People’s Choice Award winners from the evening.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JULY 2015
I
n the United States, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and the second leading cause of cancer death among women. However, there are screening tools that are available to help discover and treat breast cancer early. The most common tool for breast cancer screening is mammography. This is an X-ray of your breasts. Mammography can detect cancer early in its growth, even before it causes symptoms. Mammography is an excellent tool for most patients, but has limitations in some people. Thus, mammography can be used along with other detection tools such as ultrasound and dedicated breast MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to find cancer in breasts that are more difficult to screen on X-ray or in people who have a high risk of cancer based on their family, genetic or personal history. Self-breast examinations are useful but not always indicative. Self-awareness of your breasts is important, but self-evaluations alone have not been shown to have the same effectiveness in detecting cancer as mammography. Mammography is the preferred screening tool, however if you notice a significant change in your breasts it is still important to bring this to the attention of your health care provider. As evidence is collected, breast cancer screening recommendations can change. It can be confusing to know the right time to start screening and how often to get screened. Screening preferences are also controversial among experts so an Internet search may produce conflicting answers. It is important to understand that when recommendations are made for screening, they are made for people who have an “average” risk of cancer. Thus, having a conversation with your health care provider regarding breast cancer screening can help individualize your screening. Start this conversation at age 40 or earlier if you have any risk factors. Breast cancer screening is an important aspect of your health maintenance. You can also make your experience less stressful by obtaining your mammogram at a facility that is part of a cancer “network” meaning that you and your information are easily accessible to other dedicated breast cancer professionals who follow national cancer guidelines. Dr. Katrina Oyague is board certified in general surgery, with a special interest in breast surgery and surgical oncology. She practices with Centura Health Physician Group General Surgery Westminster; their offices are located in the Orchard Neighborhood Health Center at the new St. Anthony North Health Campus, 14300 Orchard Parkway, Westminster, CO 80223. For more information or appointments, please call 303-430-3900. To learn more about the exciting new Health Campus and its many innovative services, visit stanthonynorthhc.org.

DOGS CATS, CATS DOGS Basic Tips for Good Pet Health By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS
We all love our pets! Because many of us consider our pets to be part of the family, their health and well being is very important. Keeping a pet healthy is similar to keeping ourselves healthy with regular exercise, good nutrition, and medical check-ups. Grooming and safety throughout different seasons is also important for a happy pet.
Diet and Nutrition
It is important to keep your pet at a healthy weight through regular exercise, which will help keep their muscles toned and can even help keep their brain sharp. The American Veterinary Medical Association states that exercise needs are highly variable based on type of animal, breed, age, size, and overall health. Similar to humans, excess weight can cause numerous health problems. Your veterinarian can give you specific recommendations for exercising your dog. Though cats do not need nearly as much exercise as dogs, they should ideally get 10-15 minutes of activity each day. Scratching posts and cat trees encourage cats to climb and move around. Nutrition can have a significant impact on the overall health and well being of your pet. Dr. Katie Knepler of the Animal Doctor in Broomfield said that “Pet nutrition is a hot topic. There are many different beliefs and trends. What is great for one pet may not be the best choice for yours. The best piece of advice I can give to pet owners is to read the labels and select a food that has ‘performed AAFCO feeding trials’ and not just ‘formulated using the AAFCO profiles.’ For more information on pet nutrition, consumers can go to wasava.org/nutritiontoolkit. Or for those needing a balanced homemade diet for special needs, veterinary nutritionists are available to formulate a homemade diet at petdiets.com.”

Visit the Vet
Regular check-ups for pets are also vital to their well being. Instead of just once a year, Dr. Knepler recommends biannual well visits. She continues that, “most pets hide their pain and illness quite well, but your veterinarian is trained to detect problems such as allergies or arthritis that the pet owner may not have seen. The pet can have a risk assessment done based on the family’s lifestyle to determine which (if any) vaccinations are needed, in addition to determining what flea and tick preventatives are best for the pet. With all the moisture we have had this year and temperatures rising, we must be on the lookout for more fleas in Colorado this year. Weight assessment and nutrition recommendations can be made at the well check too. Any new medical changes or infectious diseases on the rise will also be discussed at the visit. The well visit is your chance to be educated and bring any concerns to the doctor as well as have your pet’s overall health assessed.” These check-ups are a great time to make sure your pet is up to date on all their needed and recommended vaccinations.
Animal Hygiene
Proper hygiene and grooming will also help keep your pet healthy. Surprisingly, dogs do not need to be bathed that often, unless they are very dirty, as it can dry their skin. Ask your veterinarian about how often to bathe your specific breed of dog. Cats on the other hand can handle much of their own grooming needs but may need to be bathed if very dirty. Outdoor cats will need to be bathed more often than indoor cats. Dogs should be brushed every few days to help distribute the natural oils in their coat and it also helps remove dead skin. Brushing every 1-2 days is also good for cat’s coats to help remove dirt. Both dogs and cats need regular nail trimmings. Ears and teeth should also be cleaned regularly. Your veterinarian can assist with the best supplies to use and how to clean both ears and teeth.
Keep ‘em Cool
Lastly, safety in all types of weather is important to consider when owning a pet. During the summer months, it is essential that pet owners take precaution in the heat. Dogs cannot handle heat like humans. If you have to leave your dog outside during the day, make sure they have plenty of water and access to shade. NEVER leave your dog in a closed vehicle during a hot day. Even if you just need to run into a store or take care of a quick errand, the temperature inside the car can rise to dangerous and deadly levels in a matter of minutes. When it is extremely hot, you should also be careful with how much exercise your pet gets. Exercise your dog in the early morning or evening when it is cooler. Also be aware of hot asphalt on your dog’s paws. Cats can also become overheated. You can help keep you cat cool by making sure your cat is hydrated, as well as by wiping your cat down with a cool wash cloth. Signs of heat stroke for both cats and dogs can include, but are not limited to, panting, heavy labored breathing, red gums, vomiting for cats, and excessive drooling for dogs. Seek the care of a veterinarian immediately if your pets starts to exhibit these signs.
Our pets are a very important part of our lives. Just like any family member, they should be carefully taken care of to ensure a long, happy, and healthy life. TO VIEW THE BROOMFIELDER™ ONLINE VISIT: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

g n i d Fin What to Do When
Your Pet Goes Missing By Kristen Beckman
My neighbors have, on more than one occasion, been treated to the embarrassing image of me chasing after my beagle, Copper, while waving a hot dog in my hand and shouting every key phrase that might make him stop and listen.
We
“SQUIRREL!” “WANNA TREAT?” And the most absurd,
“GO FOR A WALK?”
work hard to keep Copper out of trouble and safely contained. But, like most beagles, Copper would follow his nose or a rabbit pretty much anywhere and he’s been known to bolt as soon as he gets a whiff of freedom through a slightly opened door. Thank goodness he’s food motivated. So far, the appeal of a hot dog has always been strong enough to lure him home. But finding a lost pet isn’t always so easy or comical. The American Humane Association estimates one in three pets will be lost at some point in their life, and more than 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen every year in the United States. It’s easy to panic as soon as you realize your furry family member has gone missing or your attempt to catch him has been unsuccessful. At one time, putting up signs and hoping for the best may have been your only options. Thankfully, today there are many resources available to help you find your missing dog or cat.
26
THE BROOMFIELDER™ JULY 2015
Steps to Take: Perhaps the most important step you can take to recover a lost pet is to have him microchipped before he ever has a chance to get lost. Found pets are routinely scanned for a microchip, so having one placed and keeping your contact information current is the easiest thing you can do to give your pet the best chance to make it home.

Contact Broomfield Animal Services at 303-464-5557. The City and County of Broomfield also maintains a Lost Pet Resources page at www.broomfield.org with useful advice and contact information. Check local animal shelters, including the Humane Society of Boulder Valley, Adams County Animal Shelter, and Foothills Animal Shelter, to see if they’ve received your pet. File a missing pet report and check back often as they constantly receive stray pets. Talk to your neighbors to see if they have seen your pet. Ask them to check places around their home where an animal might became trapped, including garages, basements, sheds, and window wells. Put up signs in your neighborhood with a clear photo of your pet. Harness the power of the Internet and social media. Get the word out by posting on Craigslist or on Facebook pages like Colorado Lost and Found Pets, which provides updated information on sightings as well as lost and found pet albums. Fido Finder and Pet Harbor are just two of the many Web sites aimed at finding lost pets. Reluctant or confused pets may return home if you place an item with a familiar scent outside your home. Food, water or a litter box placed outside might also help. If you know your pet is nearby but you are having trouble catching him, try a humane trap or enlist the help of experienced rescue volunteers who can use calming and luring techniques to help catch a skittish pet. Broomfield Animal Services can provide information on humane traps. Don’t give up. It may be discouraging if your search drags on for several days or longer, but pets are often found weeks or months later. Persistence is sometimes the key factor in finding and bringing your pet home.

What Pet Owners Need to Know About
By Kristen Beckman
An outbreak of a canine influenza virus in Chicago has veterinarians and dog owners across the country on alert. Although no dogs have yet tested positive for the virus in Colorado as of the beginning of June, the virus is expected to spread throughout the country.
It’s
one of those viruses that we probably eventually will see in Colorado, and when we do see it, dog owners will have to be very careful about where they take their dog,” said Dr. John Rule, a veterinarian at Mt. Werner Veterinary Hospital in Steamboat Springs and a member of the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association. Canine influenza is a contagious respiratory disease caused by a virus. Two strains of ‘dog flu’ exist in the United States. One strain was discovered in 2004 and is now endemic in certain regions and states, including Colorado. A new strain of canine influenza discovered in March in Chicago is believed to be a mutation of the avian flu virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The disease was prevalent in China and South Korea, but it is not known how the virus entered the United States. More than 1,000 dogs have tested positive for the virus in the Chicago area and several cases have now been identified in surrounding states. Because this virus is new, dogs in this country have no immunity to it and the illness potentially could spread quickly. In addition, the virus has been shown to be contagious up to four days before symptoms appear, making spread of the virus before sick dogs can be isolated even more likely, said Rule. “Virtually all dogs exposed to the virus become infected, and nearly 80 percent show clinical signs of disease, though most exhibit the mild form,” said a bulletin from the American Veterinary Medical Association. Symptoms of the virus include cough, nasal discharge, loss of appetite, and fever and can present from mild to severe. The most serious cases can lead to pneumonia and

sometimes death, although most dogs will recover from the virus. Some dogs are more susceptible to complications from the virus, especially puppies or older dogs. Transmission occurs through nose-tonose contact and airborne nasal secretions as well as via shared toys and food dishes. Dogs are particularly at risk for exposure when they are around groups of dogs, such as at boarding and day care facilities, dog parks, canine sporting events, and groomers. Kennels and shelters are prime environments for disease transmission, said Rule. Dogs with respiratory symptoms should be isolated from other dogs until they can be cleared by a veterinarian. Clothing, equipment, surfaces, and hands should be cleaned and disinfected after exposure to dogs with symptoms. Treatment includes rest and in some cases hydration as well as antibiotics for

secondary infections. A vaccine is available for the older flu virus strain, but it is not known whether it will protect against the new strain, said Rule. Canine influenza is not transmittable to humans and there have been no reports of human infection with canine influenza, said the CDC, which is monitoring the outbreak. However, it may be possible for the virus to transmit to cats. Summer travel plans that include dogs could accelerate the spread of the virus to new areas. “Anytime you take a dog somewhere a virus exists you risk picking it up and bringing it back to Colorado,” said Rule. “Or dogs that visit from the Chicago area could bring it here. “I don’t think it’s anything to panic about at this point but we need to be very concerned,” said Rule, who said dog owners should stay in contact with their veterinarian about the virus. “If we hear it is in Colorado, owners need to think about where they are going to be taking their dog.”

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JULY 2015
You’ve seen the strange looking metal baskets with chains sticking up in the middle of fields for years now. What once was an obscure hipster excuse to get outdoors with a childhood toy known as a Frisbee has actually been a globally popular sport for decades. And you’ll find two courses right here in Broomfield.
F
irst of all, technically these are “disc golf” courses, not “Frisbee” golf courses - Frisbee is a trademarked term from the Wham-O company. Within the hard-core disc golf community (yes there is one) there can be vehement reactions to calling the sport “Frisbee golf.” To get more into the weeds (no pun intended) around the world the sport also goes by the name frolf, folf or Frisbee disc. And make no mistake, this is a “sport.” The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) is a membership organization dedicated to the promotion and sustainable growth of disc golf; with more than 50,000 members, it is the governing body for the sport and sanctions competitive events for men and women of every skill level from novice to professional. PDGA produces DiscGolfer Magazine and can be found on various social media platforms. You can tweet your favorite disc golf photos to the community @ PDGA to reach more than 16,000 followers! Another organization, the Disc Golf Association (www. discgolf.com) says there are more than 2,500 courses in the United States. DGA was established in 1976 by “the father of disc golf” Ed Headrick after he invented and patented the original Disc Pole Hole to be installed in the first formal disc golf course. His goal was to form a new international sport. Since then there’s been more than 24,000 members of the Professional Disc Golfers Association. “Disc golf shares the same joys and frustrations of traditional golf, whether it’s sinking a long putt or hitting a tree halfway down the fairway. There are few differences, though. Disc golf rarely requires a greens fee, you probably won’t need to rent a cart, and you never get stuck with a bad
Midway Disc Golf Course
Interlocken Disc Golf Course
‘tee time.’ It is designed to be enjoyed by people of all ages, male and female, regardless of economic status,” according to the PDGA. Learn more at www.pdga.com. In Broomfield you can find disc golf courses at East Interlocken Park and North Midway Park. Ryan Jensen, Broomfield’s Park Operations Supervisor notes both courses are maintained by the city. “They are in good shape and are both very popular, each for their own reasons,” he says. “The Interlocken course is more for seasoned veterans, it attracts more ‘serious’ players as there are more obstacles.” There are 9 holes with trees, hilly terrain, water hazards, and sidewalks with possible bikers – this will make you drop your Wii and try mastering a real skill. Not to mention windy days, sprinklers, and the random wildlife checking out your throws (think geese). In fact it is busy enough Ryan finds it crowded each time he visits. “People really like this one, I haven’t even played it yet,” he admits. Access the course from Interlocken Blvd.; look for signs to “East Park.” North Midway Park has 9 holes of basically flat and open terrain, but don’t be fooled: while it is easier than Interlocken, the more narrow parkland demands accuracy as there are private yards on one side and parking lots/businesses on the other. Claudia Korn is a Communications Technician for Broomfield, she’s played this with her husband and says “it’s a fun course and we really like this as beginners because there aren’t a lot of bushes or weeds or water hazards where you can lose your disc. This is a good first course for people to try.” Where to park: From Wadsworth Blvd. turn right on 6th Ave., then after 30 feet take an immediate right into the Blue Star Memorial Park lot. Like any Colorado sport, don’t forget your water and sunscreen. And if you want to get really serious, just like regular golf you can find “drivers,” “putters,” and a whole range of discs meant for specific distances at local sporting goods stores. Don’t forget there are nearby courses at Westminster City Park and Superior at Rock Creek too.
Find more details and visitor comments on local disc golf courses check www.pdga.com/course-directory. TO VIEW THE BROOMFIELDER™ ONLINE VISIT: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

Pitcher Cocktails Easy Breezy Drinks for Summer By Anne Rhoades
Warm weather is here and with it, the desire to relax with family and friends. And there’s nothing more relaxing than sharing delicious drinks on ice. Whether the occasion calls for adult drinks with a kick or something for the kids, these ideas cover it all! The best part? Most of these “Pitcher Cocktails” require no shaking and can be made ahead and chilled so no one misses out on the fun.
Teas: Teas are versatile, super easy to brew, and both black and green teas are loaded with antioxidants.
•
Tame: Chill green tea with fresh fruit slices like lemon, lime or melon. Or brew one gallon black tea and while hot, add ½ cup sugar and a cup of fresh basil leaves. Steep for ten to fifteen minutes. Cool. Then pour over a pound of fresh sliced strawberries. Both kids and adults will love it!
•
With Spirit: Add 2 ounces of peach Schnapps to 6 ounces of tea, pour over frozen peach slices. Or chill green or black tea with your choice of fruit slices, and add bourbon. Serve over ice.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JULY 2015
Mixers: Mixers can be fun and coordinate with nearly any theme a party might have.
Wine and Champagne: To make wine or champagne even more special, simply pour over seasonal fruit (melon, strawberry, blueberry, peach, or a combination of these). Chill and serve cold. Tip: using sweet white wine eliminates the need for added sugars or syrup. Sangria: Sangria originated in Spain and comes from the word sangre, which means blood, thus the tendency to use pink or red colored fruit and wine in this beverage. For delicious watermelon sangria (watermelon is naturally sweet and more than 90 percent water), pour one bottle of champagne and two bottles of rose moscato over watermelon balls frozen for 30 minutes. Garnish with blueberries and thinly sliced oranges.
Smoothies: Fresh fruit and vegetable smoothies are healthy, easy, and fun. To make smoothies thicker, add ice. To thin, add more liquid.
•
•
•
Pina Colada: Mix 2 cups pineapple juice, ½ cup coconut milk, 1 cup plain yogurt, and 1 cup of ice. Veggie Smoothie: Combine 1 cup apple juice, 1 cup apple slices, ½ cup applesauce, ½ cup sliced carrots, ½ cup cucumber (peeled and sliced), and 2 ½ cups ice. The apple keeps it sweet, while sneaking in cucumbers and carrots adds vitamin C, folate, and antioxidants. Banana Milk: For those who don’t like the texture of a smoothie, omit the yogurt and ice. Just add one banana to 8 ounces of milk. Add a dash of vanilla and 1 tsp. sugar. Blend. Sprinkle with cinnamon.
•
Tame Mojito: Drop ten fresh mint leaves into a glass and add thin slices of fresh lime. Crush with a wooden spoon to muddy (release the oils) the mint. Add a teaspoon or more of honey. Fill the glass with chilled club soda.
•
Spirited Mojito: Same as above, but add desired amount of rum. Garnish with more mint leaves and lime wedges. * Ernest Hemingway’s favorite drink, Mojitos are usually loaded with calories thanks to the generous amount of simple syrup added. Using honey instead of syrup lowers the calorie count considerably.
•
Cool Cucumber with Spirits: Press 3 very thin slices of cucumbers (cut length-wise) against the sides of a glass. Add Dry Cucumber Soda to gin in a 2 to 1 ratio. Garnish with lime wedges and mint leaves.
•
Shirley Temple: Most kids today have no idea who Shirley Temple was, but they still can’t resist the drink named in her honor. Pour any kind of clear citrus soda or ginger ale over ice, add a dash of grenadine and top with a maraschino cherry or two. SO simple!
•
Raspberry Lemonade: A perennial favorite, mix one 16 ounce can of frozen lemonade concentrate with 1/4 cup sugar. Stir until dissolved. Add fresh raspberries.
Drink Tips
Remember, the problem with many beverages is the calorie count that explodes when soda, mixers or sugar are added. Experiment with these suggestions to keep calories in check.
•
Sweetener: Try honey or Stevia instead of sugar or syrups.
•
Soda: Combine carbonated water with low calorie sweetener or honey.
•
Milk: Almond milk has more calcium, fewer calories, and less fat than cow’s milk.
•
Vitamins/Antioxidants: Add fresh fruit instead of frozen or canned. Experiment with different seasonal fruits and herbs. Cultivate fresh herbs on the windowsill — most will grow like weeds.
•
Au Natural: Skip the mixer all together and go Plain Jane. Many types of vodka are infused with flavors like jalapeño or peach and are excellent plain or on the rocks.

SummerSafety KEEP IT COOL
TIPS
By Sara Farris
Nothing beats Colorado summers. BBQ grills are fired up, outdoor activities are abundant, and pools are filled with kids at play. However, many fun summer activities come with a fair share of safety hazards. North Metro Fire Rescue District encourages families to follow these tips to ensure a safe summer.
Fire Up the Grill, Not Your House
Every year, North Metro Fire crews respond to home fires resulting from improper use of a backyard BBQ pit or grill. In fact, July is the peak month for grilling-related fires (National Fire Protection Association). To protect your patio and home from catching on fire, remember these tips when grilling out. • Make sure to put some space between your grill and your house. This includes grilling out in the open and not under an eave or in a garage as well as keeping the grill away from flammable items such as low-lying tree branches and furnishings. • Check your propane. Hoses can erode over time, so be sure to check your propane tank for any leaks. Sometimes you can smell a propane leak, but you should also try applying a soap and water solution to the hose and looking for bubbles released. If there’s a leak, turn off the gas and have your grill serviced by a professional. • Let your charcoal chill. We love the taste of a burger cooked over charcoal. However, when you are finished grilling, allow the coals to cool, and then dispose of them in a metal container. • Never leave your grill unattended and keep children at least three feet away.
Beat the Heat
As the temperatures rise, it’s important to stay hydrated and protected from the sun. Drink plenty of water while enjoying your hikes and outdoor activities. Also, make sure to use sunscreen with a high SPF, applying it every couple of hours and more often than that when swimming or sweating. In addition to sunscreen, encourage your children to wear a hat as well as sun-protective clothing, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are the strongest. A great way to cool off during the summer is with a quick dip in the pool. Unfortunately, pools claim the lives of numerous young children each year. Of those involved in a home drowning, 77 percent were only missing for less than five minutes when they were found in the pool (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
38
THE BROOMFIELDER™ JULY 2015
Designate a watcher to keep an eye on the pool when having people over to visit or when visiting a neighborhood pool with no lifeguard on duty. Protect your pool with a fence and a gate that can be locked when not in use. Also, keep toys out of the pool when it’s not in use because they may entice small children to reach for them and accidentally fall in. Technology has come a long way and can help alert residents when someone is in the pool. There are floating alarms that detect waves on the surface, underwater sensors that detect waves under the surface, and wristband alarms that a child can wear that sounds when exposed to water.
Stay Cool. Stay Safe.
North Metro Fire wants all families to have a safe and fun-filled summer. Follow the tips above, and help keep your family safe. To learn more about upcoming community and safety events, visit www.northmetrofire.org.

FROM THE
Pets at the Office By Jennifer Kerr, President and CEO, Broomfield Chamber of Commerce
T
here are many benefits to being around pets. Pets can reduce stress, have a calming effect, and improve people’s moods. Animals are great for therapy and can save lives as service pets. There are many companies that allow employees to bring their pets to work. There is even a new trend that brings animals that are available for adoption into the work environment. Recently the Huffington Post printed an article about the Doña Ana County Government Center in New Mexico. They have created a great way for employees, and for friends and families of employees, to socialize with and potentially adopt cats from the Animal Service Center of the Mesila Valley. They refer to it as the “cat library” where employees stop by when they need to improve their mood or reduce stress. Like a book, they “check out” a cat to spend time with them in their office. This exposure to cats looking for furever, I mean forever homes, has resulted in nearly 100 cats being adopted. If you are a business owner and thinking of bringing your pet to work or allowing your employees to do so, there are a few things to keep in mind. You should check with your building owner to see if pets are allowed. You may have to sign some sort of agreement before bringing in a pet and restrictions may apply. You should also have a written pet policy for employees that would like to bring their pet to the office. Check with your staff to make sure you are not creating an unhealthy work environment in the case of allergies or even phobias. Having pets in the workplace can also cause distractions and lead to a loss of productivity. So you may want to limit the number of days pets can visit their owners at work. Or maybe you can find a way to partner with a local shelter to help socialize and find adopters through special events at work. If all else fails, there are always great pet videos on YouTube.
