According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, approximately 40% of pet owners learned about their pet through word of mouth.

•
The majority of pets are obtained from acquaintances and family members. More than 28% of dogs are purchased from breeders, and 29% of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues (APPA).
•
More than 35% of cats are acquired as strays.
If your summertime plans include bringing a pet into your home – think very carefully about it first. Owning a pet is a big commitment and you should consider pet ownership within your particular circumstances.

According to the American Humane Association, the most common reasons people relinquish or give away their dogs is because their place of residence does not allow pets (29%), or due to not enough time, divorce/death, and behavior issues (10% each). The most common reasons for giving up cats are that they were not allowed in the residence (21%) or allergies (11%).
Ten years ago we gained our family dog, Eli, by word of mouth from a family who did not have enough time for him, and due to behavior issues combined. With some training and TLC he has been a great pet and a loving family member for more than a decade.
BROOMFIELD THROUGH OUR READERS’ EYES The Broomfielder™ magazine is sponsoring a photo contest for our September Broomfield Days issue cover. We are looking for that worth-a-thousand-words picture of Broomfield and want your help capturing it. The best entry will be featured on the cover of the magazine. Submissions should be a full-color, vertical, high-resolution photo of a Broomfield venue or location, or illustrate something unequivocally “Broomfield.” Please send your submissions to graphics@loudmouthmedia.com by August 1, 2016. Thank you for reading, Tina Eichner, Editor

According to the American Pet Products Association (APPA) and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats are owned in the United States. Approximately 37-47% of all U.S. households have a dog and 30-37% have a cat.
Keeping in mind the countless pets that find themselves without a home each year, many of us are also very conscientious about where our pets come from – but there is room for improvement.

HAPPENINGS
Hometown 4th of July
GREAT AMERICAN PICNIC “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be … solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.” ~ Written by John Adams to his wife Abigail upon signing the Declaration of Independence.
C
elebrate all of the fun and tradition of a good old fashioned Independence Day at the Broomfield County Commons Park! The activities begin at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 4, with pony rides and inflatables, plus the 9th Annual Great American Picnic Bicycle Parade. Decorate your bicycles, tricycles, wagons, and scooters and meet at the Championship Field at Broomfield County Commons at 5:30 p.m. The bike parade is for all ages, but kids are required to wear a helmet. Later, enjoy a free concert with contemporary a cappella group “17th Avenue Allstars” and “Wash Park.” Bring your picnic dinner or enjoy a dinner from vendors at the park. After the concert the fireworks display will begin at dusk at approximately 9:30 p.m. Parking at the Broomfield County Commons is very limited. Handicap and accessible parking is available at the Commons west parking lot. If you park on Broomfield County Commons Road, please park on the south side of the street only. RVs, campers, trailers or other extra-large vehicles will ONLY be allowed to park in the Legacy High School parking lots. Overflow parking will be available at the LDS Church across Lowell Blvd. from the Paul Derda Recreation Center and at Legacy High School where shuttle service to and from the Broomfield County Commons will be provided from 5:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. Any weather announcements will be made over the public address system and staff will notify viewers of the status. Please look for the lights located in the field where fireworks are displayed to see the fireworks display status. Green means the show is a “go,” yellow indicates it is in a holding pattern, and red indicates the firework show is cancelled due to weather concerns. Rain date for the fireworks ONLY is scheduled for July 5, at 9:30 pm.
The following items are not allowed in the park: • Glass bottles or containers • Open fires • Charcoal grills (propane grills are allowed, but not on artificial turf fields.) • No fireworks are allowed in the park Photo courtesy of the City and County of Broomfield

DANCE ARTS STUDIO’S
Long History is a Story of Community Service By Kristen Beckman
Established in Broomfield more than 50 years ago, Dance Arts Studio has a long history of providing not only dance instruction but also service to the local community.
J
ane Spain, founded the first dance studio in the Broomfield area in 1961. One of her earliest students was Heidi Thomas, who began taking dance lessons at Spain’s dance school as a way to meet friends, but continued as her love of dance grew. Thomas went on to earn a degree in dance education and then returned to Broomfield to teach dance at Spain’s studio. In 1983, Thomas bought the studio from Spain. The story of the studio’s evolution is endearing, but Thomas said the more important story is the studio’s focus on the community. That focus is deeply intertwined with the studio’s heritage and its founder’s lasting commitment to and passion for her community. “Jane Spain always had this vision of not only educating dancers, but because of her long history in the community, she wanted to give back,” said Thomas. “She wanted to share her expertise as well as give dance to the community.” The studio is now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that operates under the direction of a board of directors with Thomas serving as its artistic director. Many dance studios focus on competitions, where dancers gain performance experience in front of judges. While Dance Arts Studio also provides opportunities for its students to compete, its larger focus is on community outreach and providing
opportunities for its dancers to perform at community events. The studio participates in five to ten community outreach events each year as well as two all-studio recitals, said Thomas. “It gives students a well-rounded ability to learn choreography quickly and also be a part of what’s going on in their community and become part of a fun dance family,” said Thomas. Parents who are interested in finding out more can visit the studio’s website at danceartsstudio. org. Summer programs are available and new dancers can try a class for free. They are also having an open house on July 27 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to tour the studio, ask questions, meet teachers, and order dancewear or shoes.

he Broomfield Depot Museum Friends July 6 installment of its speaker series will bring Broomfield history alive with “When Dinosaurs Roamed Broomfield: Fossils, Claws, and Tetropods: Broomfield’s Prehistory.” The topic will be presented at 7:00 p.m. by Depot Friends board chair Carol Lucking at the historic Crescent Grange building, 7901 West 120th Ave. Lucking notes that many people think of Broomfield as a city with a short history, but 67 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the landscape in a lush environment. Now their bones, along with fossil plants and other traces of this ancient ecosystem are literally falling out of the hillsides and drainages every day. Lucking promises a fun program on this little-known aspect of Broomfield’s pre-history. The next topic is August 3 when Broomfield’s own museum administrator, Jacqui AinlayConley, will moderate a panel of local Broomfield residents who were present “When the President Came to Town: The Eisenhowers in Broomfield.” On July 7, 1963, former President Dwight D. Eisenhower and First Lady Mamie Doud Eisenhower attended the dedication of Broomfield’s first library, named in the first lady’s honor. Ainlay-Conley will explore the Eisenhowers’ connection to Colorado and Broomfield, and local residents will share their memories of the day. There is still room for more participants, so anyone who was present or remembers the Eisenhowers’ visit is invited to contact Rosann Doran at 303-469-8024, or Ainlay-Conley at 303-460-6824. The speaker series is an annual partnership among the City and County of Broomfield Cultural Affairs Division, the Depot Museum and the Broomfield Depot Museum Friends. There is no admission, but donations are appreciated. For further information about the museum, call 303-460-6824 or visit the museum’s website at broomfielddepotmuseum.org.

FROM ST. ANTHONY NORTH HEALTH CAMPUS
HEALTHY EATING By Craig Anthony, MD and Angela Mariotti, RDN, CDE
Summer is a great time to be outdoors and eat well, but summer also provides plenty of temptation. Here are some healthy eating tips for the summer: 1. Take a break from the fast food – Instead pack a cooler with healthier alternatives to the burgers and fries. Try a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread, fresh fruit, and a salad. Be sure to include low calorie proteins to help keep energy levels constant throughout the day. 2. Limit the sweet stuff – Summer is a great time for ice cream, popsicles, and funnel cakes. Remember that moderation, not elimination is the key. Go ahead and enjoy an ice cream cone from time to time, but try and balance the bad with the good. Grab fresh fruits of all colors for snacks and after dinner treats. It will not only help the sweet cravings, but will be a much lower calorie option. 3. Work more vegetables into your diet – Add sautéed vegetables to the top of proteins. They will pack plenty of flavor and nutrients. Add spinach to casseroles, stews, and soups to increase the volume without adding a large amount of calories. 4. Cook at home – When we eat at home we have control of ingredients in the meal. You’ll save money and be able to modify recipes to increase the good stuff, like fruits and vegetables, and limit the bad stuff, such as saturated fat and sodium. 5. Drink plenty of water – Summer is a great time to really focus on hydration. As the temperature outside increases, it is extremely important to increase your water intake as well. Pay attention to signs of dehydration which can include dark urine, dry mouth, tiredness, dry skin, and headaches. Try drinking an eight ounce glass of water before you eat breakfast. Bring a water bottle with you in the car, at the park, even to the grocery store, to help remind you to drink water.

OPTIMAL CARE FOR YOUR DOG THROUGH ALL LIFE’S AGES AND STAGES By Kristen Beckman
Like people, our pets our living longer than ever before thanks to better preventive care and improved nutrition. And just like people, dogs have different needs during the different seasons of their lives to ensure they remain healthy and enjoy a good quality of life.
Optimal care for your pet falls into three broad but interrelated categories: preventive care, nutrition, and exercise. By focusing on all three areas, you can give your furry friend the best opportunity for a long and healthy life.
PREVENTIVE CARE One of the first and most important things you should do when you bring a new dog into your family is to find a veterinarian that you trust, and have your pet seen for a baseline appointment. Adult dogs typically should have an annual checkup with their veterinarian once per year. Puppies and older adult dogs may need to be seen more frequently. One of the primary goals of your veterinarian is to help prevent disease via vaccinations. Some vaccinations, like the rabies vaccine, are required by law and are increasingly important as the incidence of rabies outbreaks in wildlife have recently become more common in Colorado. The Bordetella vaccine helps prevent kennel cough and may be required if you plan to board your dog at a kennel. A veterinarian can customize a vaccination program to fit an individual dog’s lifestyle, habits, and likelihood of exposure to infectious diseases. For puppies, a discussion about spaying or neutering is likely in the first months. As dogs reach adulthood, vet visits usually focus on ensuring a healthy weight and providing routine screenings. Monitoring your dog’s dental health and prescribing preventive medication for

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JULY 2016
heartworm, fleas, and ticks are typical for adult dog visits. As dogs age, the vet will watch for signs of arthritis and disease, and recommend changes to alleviate any chronic discomfort, said the American Veterinary Medical Association. These changes can include raising food and water dishes, providing an orthopedic bed, and avoiding stressful and abrupt disruptions to their routine. Dog owners should watch their pet for behavioral changes – including changes in activity level and appetite, as these are often the first sign of an underlying medical condition, said AVMA.
NUTRITION Like their human counterparts, dogs need high-quality food and a well-balanced diet to remain healthy and prevent disease. A high-quality dog food will include a healthy balance of protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Dog food labels should include not only nutrition information but also specify which stage of life the food is optimal for. Puppies need food that will sustain rapid physical growth, help build strong teeth and bones, and supply what can seem like a limitless amount of energy needed to explore and play. To fuel these demands, puppies need to eat twice as many calories per pound than their adult counterparts, according to some estimates. Puppies should be fed puppy food until they reach about 90 percent of their expected adult weight. Puppies also need to eat three times per day until six months, after which twice per day is usually adequate. Once a puppy is nearly full grown, he can move to an adult dog food that is targeted at providing sufficient calories to maintain his activity level and heal body tissue without becoming overweight. For small breeds, dogs may be ready to switch to adult food by one year while larger breeds may not be ready for adult food until 18 months. Active dogs may need more food, while more sedentary dogs might require less. Dogs may enjoy foods like cottage cheese, cooked eggs, and fruits and vegetables, but these should make up only a small
portion of their diet, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. As your dog ages, nutrition goals focus on providing easily digestible foods that help maintain a healthy weight. Some older dogs are prone to obesity and will need a lower calorie-count food, while others will tend to lose weight and might need a higher calorie-count food. Many senior dog foods also add anti-aging nutrients, such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate or Omega fatty acids that can help prevent or reduce the effects of arthritis, said the AVMA. Refer to the recommendations on the label or consult with your vet to determine what kind of food and how much to feed your dog at each stage of their life.
DANGEROUS FOOD FOR DOGS Did you know that certain foods are dangerous and in some cases deadly for dogs? Keep the following foods out of reach of your canine companion:
• Avocados • Chocolate • Grapes • Raisins • Macadamia & Walnuts
• Raw bread dough made with yeast • Onions • Garlic • Chives
• Milk (and large amounts of dairy products like cheese) • Alcohol • Coffee
• Salty and fatty foods • Products with Xylitol, such as gum, candy, toothpaste, and some brands of peanut butter.
EXERCISE Dogs of all ages, sizes, and breeds need some form of daily exercise to stay healthy and avoid becoming obese. Healthy dogs should get between 30 minutes and 2 hours of physical activity each day depending on the breed, according to PetMD.com. Some breeds, such as hunting and herding dogs, might require more, while others, like Bulldogs, may require less. Pay attention to your dog’s signals to determine whether he needs more or less physical activity. “Without activity, your dog will become bored, frustrated, and unhealthy,” according to PetMD.com. “Exercise tones the muscles, helps the body and metabolic system to function properly, and engages the mind. Anyone who has had a dog that suffers from lack of physical activity and mental stimulation will tell you that they will often turn to destructive behaviors – behaviors that magically disappear once the dog is getting out every day.” Puppies may require more exercise and physical activity,
while senior dogs will likely require less as they age. As dogs age, exercise is important to maintain a healthy weight and help your dog remain mobile despite arthritis and joint pain. All dogs should be happily tired, but not exhausted, after exercising, according to PetMD.com. TO VIEW THE BROOMFIELDER™ ONLINE VISIT: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

GRILLING By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham
Summertime grilling typically conjures thoughts of burgers, hot dogs, and other animal proteins, so it’s easy to forget that the smoky kiss of the grill brings out the best in vegetables too. Plus, eating less meat is better for your health. A few tips to elevate your vegetable grilling game:
Grilled Summer Panzanella (Adapted from Eric Skokan)
• • • • • • • • • • • • • •
4 thick slices fresh sourdough bread 1 medium summer squash, thickly sliced 1 medium red onion, thickly sliced 2 tbsp. olive oil (or as needed) 1 cup fresh parsley leaves, torn 1 cup fresh basil leaves, torn ½ cup fresh mint leaves, torn 2 cups mixed lettuces 2 large ripe tomatoes, diced 1 cucumber, diced 2 large cloves garlic, minced (or to taste) 1/3 cup sunflower oil 1 tbsp. red wine vinegar Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
In large bowl, combine bread, squash, and onion with olive oil and salt and toss to coat evenly. Grill until golden, about three minutes, or toast in the oven until bread is crisp and vegetables are tender, about 10 minutes. Cut and tear the bread and vegetables into bite-size pieces and return to bowl. In a Mason jar with lid, combine sunflower oil, vinegar, a pinch of salt, and a bit of minced garlic. Shake well to combine. Add herbs, lettuces, tomatoes, cucumber, and remaining garlic to the bread mixture and toss gently to combine. Drizzle with vinaigrette and season with salt and pepper. Serve immediately.
Grilled Mexican Corn Salad (Adapted from Bon Appétit)
1. Cut vegetables, such as peppers and squash, into thick slices so they don’t fall through the grates or cook too quickly. Toss vegetables in olive oil and season with salt and pepper. 2. Grill grates should always be clean and welloiled. Use tongs and an old folded kitchen towel to oil the grates. 3. A cast-iron skillet is terrific for grilling small or delicate items that might otherwise vanish, like cherry tomatoes. 4. Use heavy-duty aluminum foil to create durable packets for steaming delicate vegetables. 5. If making kebabs or skewers, be careful to choose items of a similar size that will cook at a similar rate. Harder vegetables, like potatoes or beets, should be par-cooked first.

Preheat grill. Slice kernels from one ear of corn and toss with shallot, chile, and lime juice in large bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Brush remaining 3 ears of corn with oil and grill, turning occasionally, until charred and tender, about 10 minutes. Let cool. Don’t Let Your BBQ
Go Up in Flames This Summer By Sara Farris, Public Information Officer
Summer is here, and it’s time to fire up the barbeque grills and spend some time relaxing with the family. However, grilling comes with its risks, and July is the peak month for grill fires. North Metro Fire Rescue District wants to educate residents on how to keep their home and family safe from harm this summer with these safety tips.
BY THE NUMBERS:
More than 8,900 home fires involve grills, hibachis, or barbecues each year.
The leading causes of grill fires were a failure to clean, having the grill too close to something that could catch fire, and leaving the grill unattended. In 2014, 16,600 patients went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: Give your grill space – Check the placement of your grill to ensure there are no flammable materials nearby – this includes overhanging tree branches, deck railings, furnishings, etc. In addition, don’t leave items such as kitchen towels or mitts near the open flame, which may catch on fire. Protect your propane – Five out of six (83%) grills involved in home fires were fueled by gas. Before you begin using your gas grill, check the propane hose for any leaks. This can be done using a soap and water solution to look for bubbles released, or by smell. If there’s a leak, turn off the gas and have your grill serviced by a professional. In addition, when not using your gas grill, make sure it’s stored away from children and covered, so they can’t easily turn on the knobs to the grill.
NORTH METRO FIRE RESCUE DISTRICT A responsive, all-hazard organization that works to provide a caring, high-quality, professional delivery of service.
Keep watch while grilling – As a rule, you shouldn’t leave your grill unattended. This is particularly important when small children are around who might burn themselves on the grill. Also remember grease and fat that drip down from meats on the grill can fuel flame-ups, which is another reason to keep an eye on your grill at all times. Make sure your fire is put out after use – If you’re using a charcoal grill or fire pit, make sure to douse the fire thoroughly with water and ensure the area is cool to touch before going to sleep or leaving the area. Don’t empty coals into your trash can. Instead, use a metal container with a tight-fitting lid that is used only to collect coals and store in a safe location. For propane grills, make sure to cover your grill after its use to keep children from turning any of the knobs, or dogs from chewing through the propane hose when you aren’t around. Bill had lost his job, and with the extra time at home he discovered his wife's infidelity. Their marriage was over. Bill's father had died seven years ago and left him a substantial inheritance. Not believing that his wife could do such a thing, Bill had simply combined the inheritance with the other family assets. Unfortunately, in the divorce there was no way to determine what was the inheritance and what was the marital property. Being unable to determine the difference, the judge divided all of the assets between Bill and his unfaithful wife, including his inheritance. But it didn't have to be this way. If Bill's father had done a thorough estate plan, he would have left the inheritance to Bill in trust. Bill would control the trust, but the trust would help him keep the inherited assets separate from the marital assets. If Bill used and enjoyed the assets inside the trust for his benefit, but did not draw them out, he could have easily identified the inherited assets in the divorce. As a result, the inherited assets would have been his separate property and would not have been divided. Estate planning can and should be more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can provide many additional advantages that protect your family. These types of protections are ignored in estate plans using cookie-cutter forms. Individuals should look closely at all of the benefits a properly-designed estate plan can provide them while they are alive, and provide their families after their death.

It
was eight years ago this month that we had to make the difficult and heart wrenching decision to say good-bye to our beloved dog, Yampa. We had almost twelve years with her in our lives when cancer began spreading through her body. I grew up always having one cat and one dog in our house. I’ve had my share of good-byes to our furry family members. But this was different. This was my dog … our dog. We raised her from a puppy and she was everything. She had been there for me during all kinds of life experiences, good and bad. She was pure love in yellow fur. I once had a friend tell me that in each of our lives, if we are lucky, we have what she called a “heart dog.” You can love lots of pets, but sometimes there is one that is just your heart. We never have gotten another dog and I tend to get my “dog fix” from the pets of friends and family. After all of these years I still miss her and think about her every day. Talking about her can easily bring tears to my eyes. So, I’m not really sure why I’m writing about this for the pet issue, except it just occurred to me that The Broomfielder’s Pet Issue always falls on the anniversary of the month we let her go. I recently saw a post on Facebook that said, “Having a dog will bless you with the happiest days of your life, and one of the worst days.” I know for those of you that have had to make the heart wrenching decision, you more than understand what that means. So, if you have a dog, or a cat, or any pets that you love with all your heart, enjoy every moment you have with them because their time with us is so short and goes so fast. Take lots of pictures and make as many memories as you can. It’s the memories and photos that will fill your heart with joy after they have gone.
