FROM THE

Your Broomfield Summer Awaits!

Y

ou might want to take this July issue of The Broomfielder magazine and set it aside in a safe place for reference later – just sayin’! This month we provide a summer guide to Broomfield music, entertainment, recreation and activities and if you embark on a fraction of them, boy are you going to be busy! We have not labeled any of it “ideas for your staycation,” but fear not. If your summer plans don’t take you far outside the local area there are still numerous options to have fun and make memories right here in Broomfield. As we turn the page on the calendar, I am still smiling from attending two important community events last month. The Ribbon Cutting and Community Open House at Broomfield FISH to celebrate the new facility was heartwarming and well executed. If you have not had a chance to visit, make the time. The facility expansion will allow FISH to impact more lives than ever before. This is truly a jewel of our community. In addition, it was another great year for Taste It Broomfield! The Broomfielder was proud to once again partner with Access Broomfield Chamber on its annual celebration of local food and drink. Thanks to the event host, the 1STBANK Center, and to all of the vendors that participated this year. The votes have been tabulated for the People’s Choice Awards and this year’s winner for Best Tasting Food, for the third year in a row, was Tiller’s Kitchen and Bar. This year’s winner for Best Tasting Beverage was Rails End Beer Company: Craft Beer & Tap Room. Thanks to everyone who joined the fun this year and we look forward to seeing you next year at Taste It. There is still more summer fun ahead from The Broomfielder! Next month is a reader favorite – our Annual Pet Issue – so get those pet photos sent in. You can find details for submission on page 31 of this issue. This month we also open the ballot for our annual Talk of the Town issue. Take a few minutes to check out our survey and give a nod to you favorite Broomfield businesses and service providers. Details about the survey and a link to the ballot are provided on page 38.

HAPPENINGS

COMMUNITY JULY 22

Benefit Broomfield seniors by attending the 17th Annual Meals on Wheels Basket Auction at 2:00 p.m. at the Broomfield Community Center. The Broomfield Meals on Wheels program provides more than 20,000 meals annually to Broomfield’s citizens. No federal or state funding is received for this program which depends on fundraising efforts and the generosity of the community. There will be a large variety of high quality baskets from local businesses, citizens, and organizations available for bid. Enjoy live entertainment, brews from Nighthawk Brewing, a kid’s craft table sponsored by Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities (BCAH), and delicious libations and appetizers while you view and bid on the beautiful array of baskets. Invite your family and friends down for an afternoon of fun and go home knowing you made a difference in the life of a Broomfield community member, with a basket in tow. There is still time to donate a basket to this worthy cause! Help Broomfield Meals on Wheels while showcasing your organization at the auction. Bring in a decorated and wrapped basket filled with goodies and donate it to Broomfield Senior Services with a completed Basket Donation Form by July 14. Ideas to fill your basket include: t-shirts and hats from your organization, gourmet coffee, chocolates, specialty wines, overnight stays at your favorite hotel, or a package deal from your favorite golf course. Please wrap your basket well with cellophane. If you are donating a painting or large object, no wrapping is necessary. Due to the fundraising nature of this auction, desirable baskets that will entice higher bids are encouraged. Please be sure to include your basket’s value (minimum value of $50) to assist with setting a starting bid. The Senior Services staff and Senior Resources of Broomfield, Inc. would like to thank the community for their support of this worthwhile and fun event. For more information or to donate a basket, please contact Arlene Languerand at 303-464-5532, or for sponsorship information contact Lisa Markus at 303-464-5527.

Broomfield Farmer’s Market at Holy Comforter

Open for THE Season! Market’s Foundation Based on Strong Community Ties

S

ince 2011, the Tuesday night Broomfield Farmer’s Market at Holy Comforter has been a stalwart community event where neighbors find fresh food, great music, food trucks, and fellowship. In 2016, the Market boasted nearly 50 vendors, and welcomed 14,000 shoppers during the summer season. “Over the past six years, the Broomfield Farmers’ Market has grown into a destination for connecting the community with healthy food and local farmers,” said Dave Carter, Marketing Manager for the Broomfield Farmer’s Market at Holy Comforter. “We love to see people coming to the market each week to buy fresh produce and meat, and to slow down a bit and enjoy live music, children’s activities, and the great offerings from our food trucks.” “We opened our 7th season June 13 with nearly 900 visitors. Those visitors found even more variety of fresh produce, locally raised meat, baked goods, and other delights,” added Dave. The Broomfield Farmer’s Market at Holy Comforter strives to be a true community market be engaging and featuring Broomfield organizations throughout the summer. In the month of July you can learn about Broomfield Senior Resources, Broomfield Master Gardeners, the Broomfield Youth Symphony, and the Broomfield Depot Museum, among other organizations. In addition, the Market maintains an important partnership with Broomfield FISH. “We are proud to continue our strong partnership with Broomfield FISH this season. Miller Farms and Dew Farms are continuing to donate their unsold produce to FISH so that local families in need can enjoy fresh, healthy food throughout the summer,” explained Dave. The weekly produce donations to FISH are even more meaningful this year because FISH now has more than adequate refrigerator and storage space for fresh food in its new facility – something that was more challenging in the past. The Market will be closed on the 4th of July but is otherwise open on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. each week at the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Broomfield at 1700 W. 10th Ave. For details on weekly highlights including featured organizations and entertainment visit www.holycomforterchurch.net/ broomfield-farmers-market. So spend your Tuesday at the Market and eat, shop, enjoy the music, and connect with your Broomfield neighbors! This is what summertime is all about.

14

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JULY 2017

Dedicated to Outreach The market is dedicated to community outreach in a variety of ways: •

Double the value of SNAP benefits redeemed at the market to increase the access that shoppers on food assistance have to fresh, locally grown food.

Cooperating with Broomfield Health and Human Services to offer residents enrolled in the WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) nutrition assistance program free $10 vouchers to purchase fresh produce at the market.

The market is operated completely by volunteers. All revenues in excess of operating costs are given back to the community.

Free 10x10 booths feature area non-profits each week to help them connect with the local community.

Produce vendors at the market donate unsold produce to Broomfield FISH at the end of each market day.

ARTS+CULTURE JULY 07 & 08 Take the family out for some modernized culture as the BackStory Youth Theatre company presents Romeo & Winifred: A Tragical Comedy in Two and a Half Acts by Charlie Lovett. The show will be presented at 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on July 7 and at 2:00 p.m. on July 8, all shows at the Broomfield Auditorium. The hilarious spoof turns Shakespeare upside down and shakes things up with a stage full of zany modern-day characters. With the help of a hilarious passel of chorus members Oregano, Carpaccio, Risotto, Prosciutto, Antipasto, Pesto, Mayo, and Romano as narrators, we get a deliciously funny spoof of Romeo and Juliet peppered with comedic and intelligent commentary on every page. It is modern-day New York City, where the high-end Montagues Department store and the cheapo Capulets Discount Mart rival clothing stores meet in the street to trade vicious insults. When Romeo and Winifred, the heirs to these two retail empires, fall in love, well ... you know the rest. But this play has a happy ending! BackStory Theatre’s programs include theatre education classes and workshops manifest in small performances for family, friends, and community members as well as fully-staged youth theatre productions. Tickets are available for $5 for youth and seniors and $10 for adults at http://www.brownpapertickets. com/event/2876281

JULY 15 Don’t miss an opportunity to Tour the Brunner Family Farmhouse guided by a member of the family! Kelly Brunner Smith will host tours of the historic Brunner Farmhouse between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at 640 Main St. For questions about this free event email BCAH@ArtsinBroomfield.org.

Hikes Worth Checking Out By Bette Erickson

There’s nothing like hiking with children and teens: A brief and brilliant flash, it seems in the vastness of an otherwise ordinary life. Kids grow up so fast. Why not make as many memories as possible while enjoying some exercise and fresh air?

20

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JULY 2017

Following are a few family-friendly trails worth exploring in Broomfield and nearby.

McKAY LAKE Youngsters on bikes and newly-dating couples love nearby McKay Lake. The open space is home to ancient, towering cottonwood and willow trees along the south side of the small lake and uninterrupted views of the mountains to the west. The leisurely 1.5-mile loop circling the lake is ideal for a quiet walk with teens and seniors. Runners, equestrians, and cyclists enjoy the route, also. From the parking area, go right along the single track dirt path near the water and through the brush. Notice the interpretive sign and pier nearby. Fishing is allowed. You’ll briefly be walking alongside a fenced farm to access a wide social trail to the west of the lake, eventually coming upon the new south dam of McKay Lake. Walk east on Photo courtesy of Bette Erickson the wide gravel route with those wonderful

METZGER FARM This expansive open space property offers two miles of inter-connected gravel hiking routes, a dock, picnic pavilion, and designated parking area suitable for 40 vehicles. The 152-acre farm is a result of a municipal award-winning joint effort between the cities of Broomfield and Westminster. The public park, open from sunrise to sunset, offers cyclists and hikers a valuable connector from existing Broomfield trails to the popular Big Dry Creek trail system maintained by the city of Westminster. If you’re visiting Metzger Farm with preschool-age youngsters, consider a quick mile out and back jaunt along the trail from the north edge of the parking area. Continue east staying right to drop

BOULDER’S TENDERFOOT-CHAPMAN LOOP If you’re looking for a hike appealing to older kids or teens, consider the Tenderfoot-Chapman Loop on Flagstaff Mountain. It’s a pleasant 2.5-mile circuit curving and zigzagging along the flanks of Flagstaff Mountain offering views of the Front Range, Sugarloaf Mountain, and the rear of Boulder Mountain Parks. This aromatic coniferous forest provides a home to blue grouse, crossbills, and Albert’s squirrels. The Tenderfoot-Chapman Trail is a pleasant, moderately tough (in a good way) trek accessed off of Flagstaff Road. To begin the hike, after parking locate the trailhead sign at Realization Point. Take the Chapman fire road downhill through a Photo courtesy of Bette Erickson ponderosa pine and fir-tree forest.

cottonwoods framing the trail. Be on the lookout for a variety of waterfowl that frequent this lake. Follow the footpath as it passes over the large spillway and make your way back to the parking area. Broomfield is currently improving the 16-acre parcel south and west of the lake within its municipal border. The intent is to provide public recreational opportunities, park amenities, environmental educational facilities, and habitat improvements. To Get There: A spacious parking lot is on the south side of 144th Avenue just west of Pecos St. Distance:1.5-mile loop Difficulty: Easy Elevation Gain: Negligible Dogs: Yes, on leash

down by the pond’s spillway and crossing the bridge connecting to the Big Dry Creek Trail. Return the way you came. Alternatively, you could take a left where the trail forks just past the farmstead and head north looping around either by turning west or turning right (east) completing a large circular route for almost two miles. To Get There: Metzger Farm is located on the northeast corner of Lowell Blvd. and 120th Ave. Distance: Varies depending on route chosen Difficulty: Easy Elevation Gain: Negligible Dogs: Yes, on leash at all times

About ten minutes into the hike, past the cattleguard, follow the draw north. Notice the Indian Peaks standing tall in the distance to the west. Continue along the Tenderfoot Trail as it curves southeast back to Realization Point. To Get There: Take US 36 west to the Baseline Rd. exit. Turn left and once past Chautauqua Park take Flagstaff Road 3.3 miles and park at Realization Point. The trailhead is to the east of the parking area. Distance: 2.5 mile loop Difficulty: Easy to moderate Elevation Gain: 500 feet Horses: Yes. Dogs: Yes, under sight and voice command or on leash

Take a Broomfield

Summer Microbrewery

Tour By Dan Powers

It’s a beautiful summer day in Broomfield, you’re thirsty, curious, and ready for something different: whether it’s after work on a Tuesday or following a Saturday of afternoon Frisbee, you deserve to find a new liquid treat. Broomfield breweries await!

Nighthawk Brewery You’ll love the spectrum of offerings at the Nighthawk Brewery: Milk Stout, Traditional Hefeweizen, Grapefruit IPA, and check out Farmhouse: made with all-Colorado ingredients including Root Shoot Malts, Voss Farms and High Wire hops, and Inland Island yeast. Try the Outshined Double IPA, paying homage to the Pacific Northwest with “big biscuit malty notes,” citrus and pine hops and a name that harkens to the music of early 90s. (We miss ya C.C.) The beer menu is complemented by an amazing pizza selection; their dough is made in-house – I tried a pineapple/ham/jalapeno pizza that went oh-so-well with their Honey Orange Blonde Ale. Their huge game room complements the more cozy tasting room; they have Thursday night trivia with the Geeks Who Drink crew, Monday night Coin Flip deals (guess right- first beer is $1), free pinball on Tuesdays, and July 22 is Painting & Pints with Color Me Mine Boulder – kids paint, parents sip! They were the 2016 Emerging Business Award Winner by the Access Broomfield Chamber – and definitely worth a visit this summer. Stop by at 2780 Industrial Lane or check www. nighthawkbrewery.com and plus look for updates on Facebook.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JULY 2017

Rails End Beer Company Tucked away off a cul-de-sac at 11625 Reed Court, in a stereotypical brewery-among-the-warehouses setting, is Rails End Beer Company; the wide open bar and patio with frequent live music provides an unexpectedly beautiful view across fields to the sunset over the mountains. Rails End’s delicious summer recipes include recent limited releases of a wheat ale with a touch of banana and vanilla (tastes great with the sun on your face) and the infused Blood Orange Double IPA with tangerine, citrus, and grapefruit. Try a five-beer taster flight for only $9 and get your snacks from different food trucks providing everything from tacos to bourbon chicken, and calzones to brats. Check out more at www.railsendbeerco.com.

Four Noses Brewery Four Noses Brewery always has a backyard house party feel: happy loud conversations and groups of friends enjoying

Summer Days Set the Stage for

By Kristen Beckman

Broomfield residents have several opportunities to enjoy a variety of music this summer during both indoor and outdoor events at several different venues. Many concerts are free and incorporate fun activities for the entire family.

BROOMFIELD AMPHITHEATER Creative Broomfield has an exciting lineup of free concerts throughout the summer at the Broomfield Amphitheater as part of its Wednesdays on the Waterfront series.

July 5 Capping off a patriotic Independence Day weekend, the United States Air Force Academy commercial band Wild Blue Country will perform at the Broomfield Auditorium as part of the series. Active duty musicians, whose mission is to support the Air Force and the academy both stateside and abroad, tell the Air Force story innovatively through communities around the world. Photo courtesy of The City and County of Broomfield

July 12 Rachel and the Ruckus is an award-winning, Coloradobased blues rock band with a funky vibe that will perform both original and cover tunes. The band, featuring Rachel Alena on vocals, is known for its rockin’ guitar and a killer saxophone.

July 19 Four all-star musicians, all based in the Denver area, make up Jake & The Plummers, which covers everything from Stevie Wonder to Justin Timberlake. The ensemble will get the audience moving with a dance party atmosphere. July 26 Soul Sacrifice performs its faithful re-creations of the legendary band Santana. Featuring renditions of Latin-infused

rock classics such as Oye Como Va, Black Magic Woman, Jingo and Soul Sacrifice, along with breathtaking guitar ballads including Europa, and Samba Pa Ti, Soul Sacrifice captures the multicultural sound and spirit that is Santana.

August 2 Music has never been performed quite like Celtic Legacy. High-Spirited, musically savvy, foot stomping and outrageously energetic music will get your heart pumping. Bagpipers, and four drummers will have you dancing in the aisles. The performance is a fast-paced, upbeat show combining amazing music, props, comedy, and incredible energy.

BRUNNER FARMHOUSE The Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities presents its Summer Sundays concert series at the Brunner Farmhouse. Concerts start at 6:00 p.m. and are preceded by carnival games, prizes, arts and crafts, storytelling, and more beginning at 4:00 p.m. Refreshments are available to purchase.

July 9 Quickdraw Homegrown Music has been entertaining audiences from Colorado to Alaska for more than 25 years with its unique brand of western bluegrass. With musical influences ranging from folk to swing and bluegrass to country, they are a true American band.

August 13 Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra (MJO) is known as the premier jazz orchestra of the Rocky Mountain area. Featuring many of Denver’s finest jazz musicians, MJO performances include toetapping hits of the 40s and 50s as well as big band, jazz, Latin, rock and modern pop.

The Mall Scene Patrons at Flatiron Crossing Mall can enjoy a variety of local musicians on Thursdays as part of its Summer Nights Concert Series. Scheduled performers include The Champions, Soul X, and Funkiphino. Shows start at 6:30 p.m. Orchard Town Center also offers family entertainment during its free summer concert series on Saturdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. through August. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy Colorado bands, including dance band Phat Daddy, vocal rock band FACE, contemporary jazz band Dotsero, and That Eighties Band, which features favorite hits from the 80s. More intimate performances featuring soloists, duets, trios, and guitarists will be held on the Orchard entertainment stage on Fridays.

1stBank Center Music lovers can choose from a variety of shows at the 1STBank Center this summer, ranging from multimedia-rich performances to legendary punk bands to shows featuring movie scores.

July 7-9 Acclaimed bass music pioneer Bassnectar will perform hits from his 10th album, Noise vs. Beauty, at the 1STBank Center. The performance includes extensive multimedia production that gives concertgoers an immersive experience along with an extensive list of special effects. August 2 Slayer comes to Broomfield to perform songs from its Repentless album. Thirty-four years into its career, Slayer remains the pre-eminent punk-thrash band that helped establish the genre and that up-and-coming metal heads continue to revere and emulate. Repentless is the band’s first new album in six years.

August 6 Hans Zimmer Revealed is a nontraditional, multilayered

experience featuring music from Zimmer’s multidecade career. The two-part concert includes some of Zimmer’s classic movie scores, such as Gladiator, The Lion King, and Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as re-imagined versions of some classic scores, such as The Dark Knight Trilogy and Inception. Weekend Broomfield in

with

Out-of-Town Guests We’ve all had it: That spur-of-the-moment phone call from family or friends telling us, “Hey I’m going to be in town this weekend and wondered if I could stay with you.” Of course we acquiesce. Not only that, we quickly put together a mental list of things to do and places to see in Broomfield. A list similar to the following:

Feeling adventurous? Invite your loved ones on a hike along one of Broomfield’s more than 250-miles of trails laced in and around the city. To get inspired, visit www.broomfield.org/1335/BroomfieldTrails-Map. If you and your fellow hikers want to narrow the search further, go to www.broomfield.org and search the term, “Broomfield 100.” Each summer, Broomfield’s Open Space and Trails department puts together a pocket guide offering citizens a choice of some 100 miles of trails to hike. While you have your walking shoes on, swing by the Broomfield Sculpture Trail, www.broomfield.org/2328/Broomfield-SculptureTrail, to be treated to magnificent public art. The trail is in Broomfield’s County Commons and is near a playground and the Dog Park (www.broomfield.org/Facilities/Facility/Details/39). Following a hike, what’s better than touring and tasting at one of Broomfield’s local breweries? Consider Wonderland Brewing Co. www.wonderlandbrewing.com or Nighthawk

28

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JULY 2017

Brewery www.nighthawkbrewery.com. There’s also Big Choice Brewing at www.bigchoicebrewing.com or 4 Noses Brewing Company, check out http://4nosesbrewing.com. Entertainment options abound in Broomfield. Consider the 1STBank Center for concerts and more – go towww.1stbankcenter. com for a list of upcoming events. And the ‘Audi’ packs in more events per year than there are days (that’s right, it’s not unusual for a turn-around of two events per day at the venue). Visit www. broomfield.org/242/Audi-Events for information. Free summer outdoor concerts are numerous in Broomfield, as well. Thursdays at Flatiron Crossing Mall is the Summer Nights Concert Series (www.flatironcrossing.com/Events/Details/446820) and ‘Wednesdays at the Waterfront’ offers an exciting (free) line-up (www.broomfield.org/DocumentCenter/View/14057) conveniently located at Broomfield’s Civic Center complex.

Few things compare to a leisurely stroll through a museum and Broomfield has two worth considering. The Veteran’s Museum is centrally located in Broomfield on Midway Blvd. (www. broomfieldveterans.com) and the famed historical Depot Museum is located just blocks away (www.broomfield.org/120/BroomfieldDepot-Museum). The Brunner Farmhouse and Gardens is recognized as a community gathering place offering seasonal concerts and family events. For information, go to www.google.com/#q=brunner+farmhouse. For a unique and affordable family afternoon or night out, consider bowling. Broomfield’s Chipper’s Lanes offers bowling, a laser tag arcade, and a bar and grill all in one location. Find information at www.chipperslanes.com/broomfield. If you have a golfing aficionado in your circle of influence, consider one of the city’s three golf courses. There’s the Broadlands Golf Course at www.thebroadlandsgc.com, the Eagle Trace Golf Club near Broomfield High School – www.eagletracegolfclub.com, or the Greenway Park Pro-shop, clubhouse, and course, at www.gwphoa.org.

If you’re looking for things to do with ‘tweens and teenagers, consider Broomfield’s Batting Cages and Skate Park conveniently located in the Civic Center complex. The Skate Park offers two bowl areas – the larger one has a double lip with a small spine and the other kidney-shaped bowl has pool coping, tile, and stairs in the shallow end. The Batting Cage has a seven wheel system, safety netting with a canopy and perimeter skirt, upgraded lighting, and computerized processing technology. Visit www.broomfield.org/Facilities/Facility/Details/13 for more information. Also at Broomfield’s Civic Center complex is The Bay. Newly renovated, the lush outdoor water park (open seasonally) features a leisure pool, tot pool, multiple slides, picnic benches, concession stand, and dressing rooms with showers. For information and fees, go to www.broomfield.org/Facilities/Facility/Details/2. And then there are the restaurants. Who doesn’t like to eat out as a reason to entertain family and friends? Consider a Broomfield landmark Great Scotts, a 1950s eatery, www.greatscottseatery.com. And catering to all diet modifications is Modern Market www. modernmarket.com, or if pizza and its variations appeal to you, visit iPie here in Broomfield with locations elsewhere around the metro area – infinituspie.com. Near Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport is where you can get an authentic taste of Britain. Visit the Wildflowers Tea Room and Burns Pub – for information see www.wildflowerstearoom.com. There’s not enough room in this article to identify all the great places to eat out in Broomfield. Check out last month’s issue of The Broomfielder for a comprehensive list of restaurants in the city and more ideas.

Have fun showing off our great community to your visitors!

What Were They Thinking? Offered by Dolan & Associates, P.C.

The traditional approach to estate planning in America is a challenging system, at best. The chances for a successful planning experience are remote if you define “success” as “meeting people’s expectations”. Many in our society consider the subject of death and dying taboo, and as a result professionals have created a reactive system that has the capability of producing as many problems as it solves. The process usually starts with professional advisors accommodating the individual’s desire to make the process as short as possible (think: trip to the dentist!). As long as the experience is short and relatively painless, most “planning” experiences are treated as “successful.” This is an extreme disservice to the client and the beneficiaries. The beneficiaries often suffer from the consequences of reactive planning. Professionals rely on sterile form documents with little effort to educate individuals about their options. This includes financial advisors who recommend action based on document acquisition, as well as attorneys who perpetuate the myth that the documents accomplish everything. In reality, people accomplish the tasks associated with estate planning, and people receive the benefit or bear the brunt of the results produced through the planning process. There is a better process available for those who take the time to seek it out. If you would like to learn more about an alternative estate planning process, that is producing results for families, visit www.EstatePlansThatWork.com.

Mayor Memories of the 4th of July in Broomfield By Mayor Randy Ahrens

I

’ve attended numerous Broomfield July 4th celebrations, but due to my years as a Council Member and Mayor, I have a different perspective on the day’s events than many other people. Initially Council gets to approve the fireworks budget. I always ask that we have a better performance than our neighboring cities since most of the pyro displays are going off concurrently. The annual softball game against the Screaming Eagles Senior Team often draws a large crowd, and certainly did in the years when Dr. Sam Novak played. Bob Morgenstern, team manager for the Screaming Eagles, always issues a challenge to City Council so it is obligatory that we field a team. Our City Hall team has won a few times, but generally the seniors prevail, even the year they let former Mayor Karen Stuart bat off a rubber tee. Both teams have brought in ringers, even enlisting former pro Kale Gilmore, our IT director at the time. Judge Randy Davis will return to the pitching mound this year so City Hall might have a chance at a win. A few years back the firework display was relocated to the Broomfield County Commons to accommodate the expanding crowds. We maintained the entertainment component and bring in local band favorites each year. Everyone looks forward to hearing Paul Derda shout out pleasantries to community friends. Over the years council has passed out many treats during the event. One extremely hot year we were passing out Dairy Queen Star Pops, and while most made the intended target to satisfy the gullet, some fell off the sticks and created new shirt art. The following years we switched to cupcakes with colored frosting. The blue and red dye looks sporting on many young lips and serves as an obvious tell for those mischievous youths requesting multiple treats. After listening to the live bands, it’s time retire to the lawn chairs and kick back with family and friends to enjoy the fireworks show. I’m so thankful for an exemplary staff that makes our council and city shine. This year, please consider saying a simple thank you to the police officers and city staff working that day.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JULY 2017

A

lready this year Colorado has seen its share of injuries, including one death, caused by lightning. Summer is the peak time of year for lightning strikes and fires caused by lightning. North Metro Fire Rescue District encourages residents to take thunderstorms seriously and to take cover when lightning is in the area. Follow these tips from the National Weather Service to keep your family safe this summer:

WHEN OUTSIDE AND A STORM IS APPROACHING: • If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you. Lightning can strike more than 10 to 15 miles from the center of a thunderstorm, far outside the rain or thunderstorm cloud. • When you hear thunder, immediately seek shelter within an enclosed building or in a metal vehicle with the windows up. Stay there until 30 minutes after you hear the last sound of thunder. • If you can’t find safe shelter nearby, immediately get off elevated areas such as hills or mountain ridges and peaks. Keep moving until you find shelter. • Never lie flat on the ground. • Don’t shelter under an isolated tree. Being underneath a tree is the second leading cause of lightning casualties. • Don’t use a cliff or rocky overhang for shelter. • Stay away from bodies of water such as ponds and lakes. • Stay away from objects that conduct electricity (barbed wire fences, power lines, etc.).

INDOOR LIGHTNING SAFETY: • If you’re inside your home, stay off corded phones, computers, and other equipment that can put you in direct contact with electricity. • Avoid plumbing, including sinks, baths, and faucets. • Stay away from windows, doors, and outdoor patios. When planning outdoor activities, monitor the weather reports to avoid being outside when storms are predicted. Pinpoint places where you can seek shelter if a storm approaches. Just because a storm passes doesn’t mean you are safe to go back outside. Wait at least 30 minutes after you hear the thunder to ensure that lightning is no longer in the area. If you witness someone being struck by lightning, immediately call 911 for help. Lightning victims have a good chance of survival with timely medical treatment. If the victim has no pulse, begin giving CPR until first responders arrive to take over treatment.

1/2 cup granola 2 teaspoons brown rice syrup 3/4 cup reduced fat milk 6 ounces fat free vanilla Greek yogurt 1 cup whole strawberries, tops removed Water 1 1/4 cup blueberries, divided

1. In small bowl, stir granola and brown rice syrup until combined. Using end of wooden spoon, press approximately 3/4 tablespoon granola into each frozen pop mold. Granola should be packed tightly into bottom of molds. 2. In another small bowl, stir together milk and yogurt; set aside. 3. Using small food processor or high-powered blender, puree strawberries until smooth. Stir water into each puree so they are pourable, about 2 tablespoons each, more if necessary.

36

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JULY 2017

4. Set aside 30 blueberries and puree remainder. Add water, as needed, to make pourable. 5. To layer pops, start by pouring, piping or syringing 1 tablespoon milk and yogurt mixture into each mold, covering granola layer. Put each mold in freezer until firm, at least 1 hour. 6. Layer 1 tablespoon strawberry puree on top of frozen yogurt layer in each mold. Cover top of molds with foil, insert sticks and freeze again until solid. Remove foil, add another layer of yogurt and freeze again. 7. For final layer, add 1 tablespoon blueberry puree and 3 blueberries to each mold. Freeze until solid. Keep frozen pops in molds until ready to eat. Run each mold under lukewarm water for approximately 10 seconds to loosen and remove frozen pops. Pops can be made 1 day in advance. Tip: For clean lines between frozen yogurt layers, use small syringe. Nutritional information per serving: 70 calories; 2 g fat; 0.5 g saturated fat; 3 g protein; 11 g carbohydrates; 1 g fiber; 20 mg sodium; 48 mg calcium (4% of daily value).
