Preschool Readiness – Preparing Your Child
Preschool is often a child’s first school experience with some children starting preschool as young as age 2, while others wait until the age of 4. Children do not need to have reached certain milestones to be "ready" for preschool. However, there are foundational parenting practices that are critical to a child's maximal development.

I
thoroughly enjoyed attending the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce’s Taste It Event last month, which The Broomfielder is honored to co-sponsor each year. The crowd brought great energy to the 1STBANK Center and the food and drink was better than ever. I was nearly full after only moving about 1/3 of the way around the room! Really fabulous and now I have a great list of restaurants to visit throughout the summer. If you were there I hope you had a wonderful time and if you missed it, keep your eyes open for this early June event next year. Delicious. Each year on the 4th of July we host a small BBQ for family and friends and then grab our blankets and bug spray and walk on over to the Broomfield Commons for the Great American Picnic. Broomfield does it right and the fireworks are always breathtaking. Read all of the details on page 10. In August we feature our annual pet issue and we are collecting photos of your favorite animal friends for our photo cover contest. Is your dog, cat, rabbit, bird or iguana a cover model? Send in your photos today and join the fun. You can read the submission details on page 18. It is also time to open voting for The Broomfielder’s Talk of the Town, our Annual Reader’s Choice Awards coming this fall. Cast your vote at www.surveymonkey.com/r/2018tott to make your favorite businesses this year’s Talk of the Town.

HAPPENINGS
COMMUNITY JULY 04 Great American Picnic A full slate of events is planned as Broomfield celebrates an All-American 4th of July with activities throughout the day at Broomfield County Commons Park! •
•
•
•
•
First, start out the day at noon at Northmoor Park and take in a friendly (but competitive) game of softball between Broomfield’s Senior Softball Team and the City Council Sluggers. The fun at The Commons begins at 5:00 p.m. with pony rides ($3) and inflatables (unlimited play tickets are $8). At 5:30 p.m., show your patriotic spirit and join the 11th Annual Great American Picnic Bicycle Parade. Decorate your bicycles/tricycles/wagons and scooters and meet at the South Red Shelter near Championship Field at The Commons at 5:30 p.m. The bike parade is for all ages. Please note – kids are required to wear a helmet. At 6:00 p.m. enjoy a free concert with the “17th Avenue Allstars” followed by “That Eighties Band,” at 7:15 p.m., both on The Main Stage at The Commons. Bring a picnic dinner or enjoy a dinner from one of the vendors at the park. Charcoal grills are not permitted. The fireworks display will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m.
Parking There is very little parking at The Broomfield County Commons and this event will draw thousands of people. Carpooling or walking is encouraged. Limited Handicap parking is available at The Commons west parking lot.
Photo courtesy of The City and County of Broomfield
Accessible parking is located at the Commons west parking lot. If you park on Broomfield County Commons Road, please park on the south side of the street only. RVs, campers, trailers or other extra-large vehicles will ONLY be allowed to park in the Legacy High School parking lots. A shuttle service at Legacy High School will provide transportation to and from the Broomfield County Commons. Shuttles will run from 5:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. Park at Legacy and meet at the Gazebo at Legacy High School.
Weather If fire and police officials determine that continuing the fireworks display impacts the safety of individuals and property in the area, the display could be delayed or stopped. Should that happen, announcements will be made over the public address system and staff will notify viewers of the status. Please look for the lights located in the field where fireworks are displayed to see the fireworks display status. A rain date for the fireworks ONLY is scheduled for July 5 at approximately 9:30 p.m.
The following items are not allowed in the park: • Glass bottles or containers • Open fires • Charcoal grills (Propane grills are allowed, but not on artificial turf fields.)

TASTE IT WOWS 1STBANK CROWD
Photo courtesy of All Digital Photo and Video
N
This year, Taste It featured an expanded passport with new voting categories, digital voting options, and a fun photo booth, in addition to live music by local favorite Patrick Keating. Here’s the “Best” of Taste It 2018 as selected by attendees:
early 700 people came out on June 7 for Broomfield’s annual feasting of food and drink, Taste It, held at Broomfield’s 1STBANK Center. The crowd enjoyed samplings from 28 local businesses and also had an opportunity to visit with and gather information from seven of the community’s non-profit organizations. “With a record number of food and drink vendors, the lines were short and the food and drink were excellent. People appreciated that we made this a familyfriendly event,” said Sam Taylor, president and chief executive officer of the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce. “The quality of food and drink at this year’s Taste It was exceptional – and the portions were very generous! The Broomfielder™ magazine and Loudmouth Media were pleased to once again co-sponsor this annual celebration of Broomfield’s restaurant and beverage proprietors. Thank you to the Chamber and to all of the participating vendors for a delicious and memorable night!” said Mike Garrison, owner and publisher of The Broomfielder™ magazine.

JULY 11
Enjoy Classic Rock with Thumpin’, Colorado’s favorite dance band. Thumpin’ combines two, energetic lead vocalists with a tight rhythm and horn section, pristine vocal harmonies, and a repertoire of songs that spans five decades of funk, soul, and R&B. Thumpin’ provides audiences with music that moves the body and soul for a maximum groove. Wednesdays on the Waterfront are free at the Broomfield Amphitheatre and start at 7:00 p.m.
JULY 18
The Pamlico Sound play original, authentic, high-energy big band funk with an updated reading of the classic styles of greats, like Sly and the Family Stone and Parliament Funkadelic. The interweaving lead vocals of Ghana Queen and the Reverend EverReady are laid over a hard-grooving, rhythm section and ornamented by the notorious Soul Shouters Horns. With lyrics reminiscent of the intelligence, humor, and social consciousness of their legendary influences, and a relentlessly upbeat drive to their musical arrangements, the group lifts listeners’ spirits into a rarefied atmosphere. Wednesdays on the Waterfront are free at the Broomfield Amphitheatre and start at 7:00 p.m.

PRP MAY BE RIGHT FOR YOU!
WHAT IS PRP? PRP, or platelet rich plasma, is a portion of a patient’s very own blood that initiates and stimulates the healing process in your joints, without surgery! After platelets are injected, they change shape and develop branches that spread over the injured area forming a healing enriched base. Growth factors in the PRP are released from this healing layer which stimulates inflammation and draws healing cells to the area.

we’re looking for good news on the breast cancer front, we can find it in the tools and technologies we now have for earlier diagnosis. Such advances are vitally important since breast cancer is not only the most common cancer among women in the United States, but the second most likely cancer to cause death. The challenge is to find it early when it can be treated more easily and with greater success. The most common tool for breast cancer screening is mammography. This X-ray of your breast tissue can detect cancer in its first stages, even before there are any symptoms. Technological advances in mammography have resulted in the use of two-dimensional (2D) digital imaging instead of film and have allowed for equivalent images using significantly lower doses of radiation. The introduction of three-dimensional (3D) mammography—also known as digital breast tomosynthesis or “tomo”—improves both our screening and diagnostic capabilities. Studies in both the U.S. and Europe confirm a higher rate of early detection when 2D and 3D are used together. How do 2D and 3D mammograms differ? From the patient’s perspective, it is basically the same experience. The breast is compressed between two plates as low-dose x-rays are taken from the front and side. With 3D tomo, which takes only a few seconds longer, breast images are created in “slices” from many different angles. This enables the radiologist reading the mammogram to detect abnormalities and changes in the breast more easily. Also, viewing difficulty caused by overlapping tissue is eliminated, and denser breast tissue can be visualized more clearly. Check with your insurer in advance to determine if the modest additional cost of 3D tomo is covered. As evidence is collected, breast cancer screening recommendations can change. It can be confusing to know the right time to start screening and how often to get screened, and your internet search may produce conflicting answers. It is important to understand that when recommendations are made for screening they are made for people who have an “average” risk of cancer. Thus, having a conversation with your health care provider regarding breast cancer screening can help individualize your screening. Start this conversation at age 40 or earlier, if you have any risk factors. Breast cancer screening is an important aspect of your health maintenance. You can also make your experience less stressful by obtaining your mammogram at a facility that is part of a cancer “network,” meaning that your information is easily accessible to other dedicated breast cancer professionals who follow national cancer guidelines.

Preschool Readiness PREPARING YOUR CHILD By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS
S
chool days are a special time for both children and parents. Preschool is often a child’s first school experience with some children starting preschool as young as age 2, while others wait until the age of 4. Debbie Kunz a Licensed Master Social Worker and the Executive Director of Bal Swan Children’s Center, said “in terms of preschool readiness, children do not need to have reached certain milestones to be "ready" for preschool. However, there are foundational parenting practices that are critical to a child's maximal development.” 20
THE BROOMFIELDER™ JULY 2018
One of the most important things you can do for your child's development that will also impact how well he or she adapts to attending school, is establish an emotional bond of trust. Kunz said, “Humans are exceedingly vulnerable at birth, and one of the primary tasks of infancy is for a child to learn that their needs are going to be met by a responsive caregiver. Because of the development of the human brain, we need to ensure that emotional needs are met first. Healthy socialemotional development leads to a child reaching his or her academic potential.” Establishing this bond of trust includes basic needs such as the parent responding when the child is crying and feeding the child when hungry. It is also important for parents to work to recognize children’s different cries and their body language which is their primary form of communication when young. Learning to discern whether your child is hungry, tired, lonely or over/under-stimulated can be very helpful. When you learn to recognize your child’s communication, there will be less guessing what they need. Lots of healthy physical touch, and sharing music by singing rhymes and songs can also help establish a bond. Sing together. Songs “help a child's memory and recall, plus literacy skills such as vocabulary development and letter recognition and rhyming.”
Kunz also recommends connecting with your child through books. This is important at home and is also very important to help prepare your child for success at school. Reading together and talking about the story and pictures, exposes the child to new words and can help them understand emotions. Ideally, Kunz recommends trying to strive to connect at least three intentional times each day. When your child wakes up, before you leave for work, school or an activity and then again before bed. Focus on your child by snuggling, reading, talking or playing. Driving in the car is another great time to connect and teach. Talk about the day, what you might see while driving, or expectations for behavior. “Tell the child what you expect. Rather than focusing on "no!," tell the child what you want him/her to do. "No hitting" does not teach the child what behavior you want. "Hands to yourself" tells the child what to do with his/her hands,” Establishing a routine at home and for school is vital for most children. “Humans need patterns and establishing a somewhat predictable schedule helps the child's brain organize and spend less time predicting and more time learning,” said Kunz. When you have decided to send your child to preschool, establishing a school day routine is important. Starting a ‘school’ bed time 2 weeks before school actually starts can help with the transition into school days, especially after often later bedtimes in the summer. Once school has started, it is ideal to make sure your child is up early enough so the morning is not rushed. Sitting down to have breakfast together can help get the day off to a good start. If attending school is very new to your child, reviewing the day’s schedule, packing their backpack together, and sending some foods in their lunch that you know are favorites can help with the transition. Some schools will even allow a special stuffed animal or blanket to help with nap time, and these familiar objects can help with loneliness during the day. Though Kunz acknowledges that this might seem like a lot to remember, the most significant points are, “emotionally connect with your child, verbally validate your child, tell the child you love him or her and what is special about him or her, give your child a predictable schedule, teach your child what behavior you expect and READ, SING, and PLAY every day!” To view The Broomfielder™ online visit: www.loudmouthmedia.com

Is Your Child A
SCREEN ADDICT? By Kristen Beckman
It’s a common refrain among parents lamenting the challenges of raising kids in today’s technology saturated world: “My child spends too much time on his phone, or playing online games, or watching YouTube videos.” Screen Time Recommendations
A
nd although many parents would probably agree that their child’s media usage could use some reining in, it can often be difficult to apply screen-time restrictions that work. Meanwhile, children are increasingly showing signs of screen-time addiction that can cause a variety of harmful mental, emotional, and physical effects. Dr. Jenna Glover, a psychologist at the Children’s Hospital Colorado Pediatric Mental Health Institute, said screen-time related issues have been growing since about 2012, when smart phones started to become ubiquitous. “The average teenager is having anywhere from six to eight hours of screen time a day,” said Glover. “It definitely has continued to rise as screens are becoming more of an everyday component of everybody’s lives.” That includes at school, where kids frequently use computers, tablets, and even their own phones to communicate with teachers, perform research for assignments and complete homework using online applications. The use of screens for educational purposes creates some questions about the cumulative impact of screen-time hours and whether there is such a thing as good and bad screen time. “There’s definitely types of screen time that are going to be better for kids,” said Glover, who noted that screen time rooted in educational purposes can be not only more enriching for kids, but also easier for them to disengage from than video games and other types of screen time. Among the negative impacts Glover said she finds most concerning is the potential for screen time to disrupt sleep when screens are used too close to bed time, which can impact

mental and physical health. In addition, Glover said there is a known correlation between time spent online and depression and anxiety, although it’s unclear whether screen time causes depression or whether depression drives kids to spend unhealthy amounts of time online. Physical health impacts are also a consequence of too much screen time, including a greater risk for obesity.
Sunshine Piano Studio
Pasadena Way • Broomield 80023 “Screen time can be particularly dangerous if kids aren’t doing other things outside of screen time,” said Glover. “In and of itself, screen time is not dangerous, but it takes kids away from socializing and playing and interacting. If you have a kid who is doing six hours of screen time but they still have activities or are still spending time with friends, it probably is not going to be as harmful as a kid who is spending a lot of time on screens and not doing those other things.” While overuse of screen time is not officially designated as an addiction, people can develop an unhealthy relationship with screen time and demonstrate symptoms consistent with addiction, said Glover. Those symptoms include agitation when screens are taken away, an inability to do without screen time for a period of time without becoming upset, and withdrawing from peers and family members. While it can be tempting for parents to drastically restrict screen time in response to concerns about addictive behavior, Glover said screen time limitations should be implemented gradually. Cutting off screen time for a child who is accustomed to spending a lot of time on screens each day can lead to depression, she said. In addition to small changes, Glover recommends establishing clear rules about electronics and screen time, including creating digital free zones in the home, not allowing screens during meals and cutting off access to screens for at least an hour before bedtime. It is also important for parents to realize their own contributions to the growing problem of screen-time dependence among their kids, Glover said. “It’s not really effective to tell your kid to get off their phone if you’re on your phone a lot or you’re watching TV all the time,” said Glover. “I think a lot of times as parents we forget, because we have all these good reasons that we are looking at our phones, that we really are the ones who set the tone, and it really needs to be the family that is committing to good screen time habits and not just kids.”

Estate planning is more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can also protect your family. Most of these protections are ignored in form driven estate plans. For example…. When Bill and Jane first learned of his illness they sought legal advice. The first lawyer they spoke with said they did not need estate planning. He told them to put everything in joint tenancy, because “it is simple and avoids probate.” They weren’t comfortable with that advice, and sought guidance from a counseling-oriented attorney who learned more about them, their estate, and their goals. Bill’s primary goal was to protect Jane after he died. Under Bill’s plan, their savings, his life insurance and the home would be put in trust. This would protect the assets from a potential predator and help protect her own assets as well. After Bill's death, Jane finally got back in stride. The volunteer work she started to keep her mind off her loss became a fulfilling passion. She met new people, including David. They connected immediately, and she soon found herself head over heels in love. He proposed. She accepted. Her family noticed that his focus suddenly turned toward a keen interest in her finances. Blindly in love, she did not. Bill’s plan left his assets in trust for Jane. A requirement of receiving benefits was that she obtain a prenuptial agreement to protect her assets upon remarriage. While the assets Bill left her were protected, she needed to take action to protect her own assets. David was enraged when she told him that she was required to have a prenuptial agreement preserving the assets for her children. Realizing that half of the assets were held in trust, and that a prenup would prevent him from receiving the balance upon her death, David lost interest in Jane. While Jane was sad, she also felt comforted that Bill was still protecting her even after his death.

Summer MUSIC AROUND TOWN By Elizabeth Buckingham
ummer is finally here, and there is no better way to enjoy this amazing season in Colorado than listening to great music under the stars. Broomfield and the surrounding cities offer plenty of concerts and events each summer, and if live music is your thing, you’ll find plenty of toe-tappin’ tunes to entertain the whole family. The Front Range’s best local musical talent really shines during the summer months, so get out and find a new favorite band, and support a few other local businesses along the way. Most summer concerts and events are free and family-friendly, but pets should be left safely at home; it’s often stressful for both dogs and people to be together in large, loud crowds. Most venues have food trucks and beverages available. Many also allow outside food and drink to be brought in, so you can pack a tasty summer picnic, but outside alcohol and glass containers are typically prohibited. This is Colorado, so you’ll want a hat, sunscreen, and bug spray, and remember that smoking anything in public is illegal most everywhere. And don’t forget your reusable water bottle so you stay hydrated amidst all that dancing you’ll do!

Dry Conditions Require
Summer Fire Precautions By Sara Farris
It’s that time of year again. ‘Tis the season for fireworks, BBQs, and fire pits — and the warm, dry weather that increases the risk for grass fires. We’ve already seen our share of grass fires in North Metro Fire Rescue District, and almost all of them were preventable. Help keep your community safe from fire by remembering these tips this summer. •
•
Fireworks are illegal (and dangerous), so don’t use them. – Every year, North Metro Fire responds to grass fires caused by fireworks, some which have threatened nearby homes. Fireworks are illegal, but that doesn’t stop kids from accessing them and playing with them in open areas. We are fortunate to have great fireworks shows put on professionally by every city in the area, so take advantage of these free shows and attend your city’s event. In some cities, sparklers are allowed. These still pose a risk for starting a fire. Be certain they are thoroughly extinguished in a glass or metal container filled with water and cool to the touch before disposing of them in the trash. Fireworks that aren’t properly extinguished can easily catch your trash on fire and spread to your home. Douse and continue to monitor your fire pits. – When the temperatures are high, fires can easily rekindle in fire pits. This is one reason it’s important to keep your fire pit at least 10 feet away
A responsive, all-hazard organization that works to provide a caring, high-quality, professional delivery of service.
Proudly serving Broomfield and Northglenn as well as portions of Adams, Boulder, Jefferson and Weld Counties.

from your house or other materials that can burn. It’s also important to make sure you thoroughly extinguish your fire, use a screen to keep embers from dispersing, and check on your fire pit even hours after you’ve extinguished it. •
Let your charcoal chill. – If you prefer grilling out with a charcoal grill, we understand. The extra flavor it adds to your burgers or meat is undeniable. However, hot charcoal is another source for starting a fire. Make sure your charcoal is cool to touch before disposing of it in a metal container.
•
Bag up and recycle your yard waste instead of burning it. – Burning yard waste is a huge hazard to both you and your neighbors. We’ve seen trees burned and fences and houses scorched by residents burning items in their yard. Don’t burn your trimmed branches or other yard waste. Instead, check out your city’s services regarding the disposal of branches, grass clippings, and leaves. Most cities offer a way for you to get rid of your yard waste in a safe and environmentally healthy way.
•
Don’t toss your butts. – Cigarette butts tossed out the window is one of the most common causes of grass fires, especially those originating near major roadways. Please be respectful of your community, and do not throw your cigarette butts out your car window while driving.
North Metro Fire wants everyone to have a fun and safe summer, so help us keep fires away by practicing fire safety around the home.

Mammograms Matter
The earlier breast cancer is found, the better the chances are for successful treatment. Breast cancer screenings save thousands of lives each year. Mammograms can help you find breast cancer in its early stages, even before any symptoms appear. The American Cancer Society recommends the following guidelines for finding breast cancer early:
PERIODIC SELF-EXAMS • Start at age 20
CLINICAL BREAST EXAM WITH A PHYSICIAN • Every three years starting at age 20 • Annually after age 40
Centura Health Breast Care centers offer 3D breast mammography imaging. 3D mammography has increased the detection of invasive breast cancers by 40 percent and reduced false-positive rates by 15 percent. All screenings are read by dedicated breast radiologists.
ANNUAL MAMMOGRAPHY SCREENING
• First by age 40 • Consult with your doctor about having a screening
sooner if you have a family history of breast cancer
Call 720-321-0401 or visit centura.org/mammogram to schedule your life-saving breast screening today.
