EXPLORE BROOMFIELD’S PARKS AND TRAILS THIS SUMMER
S
pending time outside is one of the best things about summer and Broomfield is an amazing place to get outside. I grew up on Holly Drive West which has a sidewalk trail that accesses the Miramonte West Park at 1395 Daphne Street. In the summertime, my siblings and I would spend hours and hours in that park with dozens of other neighborhood kids. We would play on the playground, dig in the sand, run through the grass, and play hide and seek in the trees until the street lights came on. With more than 66 miles of trails, 700 acres of developed parks, and 45 playgrounds, there is plenty of Great Outdoors to explore this summer right here in the City and County of Broomfield. If you are not familiar with Broomfield’s wide open spaces, make sure and take advantage of the Broomfield Trail Adventure and the Broomfield 100 which have been organized by the City to promote the local trail system and provide Photo courtesy of The City and County of Broomfield fun events for family outdoor recreation. You can jump into your local exploration by attending the Broomfield Trail Adventure on June 6 from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. This year’s Trail Adventure will be held at Legacy High School Park just west of the High School parking lot. Trail routes will follow the Lake Link Trail around Plaster Reservoir and along the Quail Creek area. The morning will include refreshments, games, and t-shirts. Walkers and bikers are welcome. The “Broomfield 100” will be kicked off at this year’s Trail Adventure. The Broomfield 100 is a community challenge that will run throughout the summer and highlight approximately 100 miles of trails in and around Broomfield. Residents will be able to check off conquests, spot native wildlife, and learn more about Broomfield’s top trails using the Broomfield 100 Trail Adventure Guide. The Broomfield 100 runs through Broomfield Days, September 19. For more information and updates throughout the summer, please visit www.broomfield.org/broomfield100 and sign up for alerts. The www.Broomfield.org website provides a wealth of information and resources to help in your outdoor discovery including a great interactive map at www.parks. broomfield.org where you can find the perfect location for your next playground visit or game of hide and seek including location, description, and photos.

DOING SOME LANDSCAPING IN THE YARD THIS SUMMER? The City and County of Broomfield Stormwater Management Program would like to remind you that when conducting your landscaping projects, have your landscape material delivered in your driveway or find a staging area on your property. One of the leading causes of water pollution is landscaping material (rocks, compost, dirt, etc.) that is deposited in the curb and gutter. This kind of material can get washed away in Stormwater runoff. The City and County of Broomfield works hard to maintain its storm sewer system and drainage ways. Storm sewers discharge directly into creeks, streams and ponds untreated. It is illegal and a violation of the Broomfield Municipal Code to dispose of or allow materials other than Stormwater to discharge into the storm sewer system. Thank you for assisting the City and County of Broomfield in its efforts to keep our water clean. For more information, contact the Stormwater Management Program at 303.464.5648 or go to www.broomfield.org

For Trusted, Local Home Appliance Repairs Call By Elizabeth Buckingham
Y
ou stumble into the shower one morning, groggy and blearyeyed, only to be greeted with ice-cold water. Finding out that your water heater has failed yet again is a rather unpleasant way to start the day. You need it fixed quickly, but you’re at a loss as to who to call – all those repair vans you see trolling your neighborhood seem so sketchy, and you’re worried that you’ll wait all day for someone who promised to show up six hours ago. And do you really know whom you’re inviting into your house anyway? Fear not! Fix-It 24/7, a family-owned company, is here to help. Fix-It 24/7’s trustworthy and considerate technicians are thoroughly screened. The company offers a one-stop repair shop for anything under your roof. From air-conditioning, electric, and refrigeration to plumbing and heating, this reliable local company can fix anything. What sets it apart from other repair companies? “Straightforward pricing,” meaning they bill by the job, not the hour. You’ll know in advance how much you’ll have to pay – and they’ll offer you three to four different options so you can make the best choice
for your budget. There is never a premium for after-hours calls, so even if it’s midnight on a Saturday you know you won’t be gouged. They also guarantee a two-hour response window so you can schedule your life accordingly, and you won’t be stuck at home waiting around for a repairman who never shows up. Fix-It 24/7 is a complete service company, employing more than fifteen people locally. Their certified and licensed technicians and diagnostic specialists complete regular training to ensure they’re up-todate on new products and technology. They offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee as well as financing and extended warranties, and they’re focused on “doing the very best for customers” and “growing and improving,” according to owner Dirk Schmidt. As part of their commitment to the local community, each quarter Fix-It 24/7 offers a free water heater or furnace to someone who might not otherwise be able to afford one. You can apply or even recommend someone else by visiting their website at www.fix-it24.com/caring-community-page/. Fix-It 24/7 services the northern metro area, including Boulder and Longmont. Next time you find yourself in need of appliance, A/C, plumbing or heating repair, avoid the franchises and stay local. Contact Fix-It 24/7 at 303-659-3400. You’ll be glad you did! See their ad on page 3.

Library Seeks
Super Summer Readers By Kristen Beckman
The Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library is hosting superhero-themed summer reading programs for all ages and is hoping reading will become a family activity for its patrons this summer.
T
he children’s program, “Every Hero Has a Story,” rewards readers for completing three levels of reading. Children from 24 months to preschool are asked to read or listen to 45 total books, broken down into prize levels after every 15 books completed. Children in kindergarten to entering fifth grade are asked to read a total of 15 hours, broken down into three prize levels for every five hours completed. Parents are encouraged to read 10 books with babies up to 24 months and complete early literacy activities to receive a board book prize. The library also plans to host an early literacy event July 18. Prizes include passes to the Broomfield Bay and Lakeside Amusement Park as well as vouchers for food at Subway, McDonald’s, and Benihana. Those who complete all three levels can choose a book from a selection of board books, picture books, beginning readers, and chapter books. The library purchases a wide variety of books for the final prizes, including popular fiction and nonfiction selections that will have wide appeal, said Susan Person, children’s librarian. Last year, more than 4,000 children participated in the program and a large percentage of those who registered completed the program, said Person. Children who are not independent readers are encouraged to combine reading with being read to. Person said the schools expect kids to read 20 minutes per day starting in kindergarten, and the summer reading program is a good way to practice that skill. Summer reading programs are also an effective weapon against what is known as summer slide, which is the loss of academic skills during the summer months when school is out. “If they are not practicing those skills, they are going to lose them and when they come back in the fall, they are already behind,” said Person. “It is really important to get kids reading during the summer.”
16
THE BROOMFIELDER™ JUNE 2015
To help children find books they might like, the library posts reading recommendations monthly on its website and has several resources at the library, such as series notebooks. Librarians are always available to help young readers find a book that will appeal to them. Children going into sixth grade through graduated seniors are eligible for the “Unmask” superhero-themed young adult reading program.
T
he adult summer reading program, “Escape the Ordinary,” asks participants to read or listen to five titles to be entered in a prize drawing. Prizes are still being determined, but five patrons will win a library tote each week via a drawing. Entries for the weekly drawing are earned by correctly answering a trivia question at the reference desk or by writing a book review for the library to post. More than 560 adults participated in the summer reading program last year. “We encourage our children to participate in summer reading, while often forgetting ourselves,” said Sarah BrennanGreen, patron services associate. “It is our hope that grown-ups will remember how fun it can be to lose oneself in a book; summer reading programs are a great way for families to remember that and read together.”
All of the library’s summer reading programs run from June 1 to July 31.

HEALTHIER YOU TIPS FOR A
From St. Anthony North Health Campus The Importance of
SUNSCREEN By Krystal Tamura, MD
I
t’s that time of year again, summertime. A time for barbecues, hiking, camping, and sitting by the pool. As we pack up our bags, we remember the food, water, and other essential items, but do we always remember to pack the sunscreen? Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers, with more than 3.5 million cases diagnosed each year. Risks for skin cancer include over-exposure to UV radiation, pale skin, family history of skin cancer, multiple or irregular moles, history of severe sunburns, and older age. Correct selection and application of sunscreen helps to minimize the development of these cancers. You may ask yourself, “Which sunscreen is right for me?” When buying sunscreen, make sure to choose a product with SPF 15 or higher that is broad-spectrum (blocking both UVA and UVB rays). Apply sunscreen daily 30 minutes before any outdoor activity and reapply according to the product directions, and especially after exposure to water or heavy perspiration. Waterproof sunscreens only guarantee protection for 80 minutes of water exposure, so it is important to reapply within this time frame. Even with the proper use of sunscreen though, skin cancers can still occur. Make sure to check your skin regularly and consult your physician for any suspicious spots. The ABCs of skin lesions are a simple way to remember what needs to be evaluated.

Visit One of
Colorado’s National Parks This Summer By Kristen Beckman
C
olorado is home to four national parks, each with great sightseeing opportunities and activities within a day’s drive from Denver. The parks offer a wide variety of attractions and activities for everyone, from families with young kids to outdoor enthusiasts. If you plan to visit more than one park in Colorado or nationwide, the National Park Service offers the America the Beautiful pass for $80, which provides access to all federal recreation sites for one year. A $10 lifetime senior pass is available to all U.S. citizens 62 and older.

Mesa Verde National Park Mesa Verde National Park offers an opportunity to learn a history lesson while experiencing some of Colorado’s scenery. Established in 1906, the park is located in Montezuma County and preserves the dwellings of the Ancestral Pueblo people who inhabited the area from 600 to 1300 A.D. The Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center and the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum offer information on Ancestral Puebloan culture, including exhibits of prehistoric artifacts, a chronology, and other related items. The Spruce Tree House dwelling can be toured and includes 130 rooms and eight kivas built into a natural alcove. The park features nearly 5,000 archaeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings, some of which are open for tours. Guided hikes are available to some dwellings. The park offers other activities, including camping, biking, plant walks, and nighttime stargazing. One-week pass: $15 per vehicle • Annual pass: $30
Rocky Mountain National Park
Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve If you want to build a sandcastle this summer, you don’t have to go to the beach. The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, established in 2004, features the tallest sand dunes in North America. The dunefield, formed by the deposits of the Rio Grande River in the San Luis Valley, spans 30 square miles and is surrounded by mountains, wetlands, forests, and grasslands that are protected wilderness areas. Try sand boarding or sledding down the dunes or take a morning hike to avoid hot sand temperatures and thunderstorms in the afternoon. The park and surrounding areas also offer opportunities for bird watching, camping, horseback riding, four wheeling, and wildlife viewing. Several hiking trails are available, including the Montville Nature Trail that leads to a 19th century settlement. Nearby attractions include Zapata Falls, the San Luis State Park and Wildlife Area, Fort Garland, and the Los Caminos Antiguos Scenic and Historic Byway. One-week pass: $3 per adult. • Annual pass: $15 per vehicle.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
President Woodrow Wilson signed the Rocky Mountain National Park Act on January 26, 1915, making it the tenth national park. The park has a variety of events to commemorate its 100th birthday planned this summer, including speakers, special activities, and community events. Located in Colorado’s Front Range, the park offers a wide range of activities within a short drive of the metro area. The 415-squaremile park includes 300 miles of hiking trails, camping, horseback riding, bicycling, fishing, rock climbing, and plenty of opportunities to view wildlife and wildflowers. The park is open 24 hours a day, year round. Lily Lake and Bear Lake on the east side offer hiking trails, picnic sites, and family-friendly activities. Kawuneeche Valley on the west side features the headwaters of the Colorado River. A park visitor center offers information on road conditions, trails, and ranger-led programs. One-week pass: $20 per vehicle Annual pass: $40
Established in 1999, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park protects portions of the Gunnison River. Located in southwest Colorado near Montrose, the park features steep cliffs, including the Painted Wall, Colorado’s highest cliff at 2,250 feet. Hiking trails are available along the canyon’s north and south rims and the inner canyon, although some of the terrain is better suited for experienced hikers. For a scenic drive, the park features roads along both rims of the canyon as well as along the Gunnison River. Other activities in the park include fishing, kayaking, rafting, wildlife watching, horseback riding, and rock climbing. The park also offers a variety of ranger programs for kids. Nearby attractions include Crawford State Park, which offers hiking, fishing, boating, and jet skiing. One-week pass: $15 per vehicle • Annual pass: $30 Detailed information about all national parks is available at www.nps.gov. TO VIEW THE BROOMFIELDER™ ONLINE VISIT: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

DON’T MISS MUSIC IN THE PARK! By Elizabeth Buckingham
Summer is finally here, and there is no better way to enjoy this amazing season than listening to great music under the stars. Broomfield offers plenty of family-friendly activities each summer, and one of the best is certainly Music in the Park, sponsored by Broomfield Rotary. Music in the Park will take place on Saturday, June 13 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at The Broomfield Commons and best of all - IT’S FREE!
T
his terrific event, organized to highlight Broomfield Rotary’s community involvement, certainly wouldn’t be Music in the Park without some great tunes. Wear your dancing shoes, because this year you’ll be tapping your toes to live music by Radio Waves, a great local band playing classic rock and R&B tunes with an emphasis on “fun, danceable music.” Broomfield Rotary will provide plenty of kids’ activities at Music in the Park too. North Metro Fire and Rescue will be on hand to offer fire safety and paramedic demonstrations focused on keeping your family safe at home, plus they’ll bring a real fire truck kids can climb on and explore. Bouncy castles and face painting are also guaranteed to keep children of all ages entertained! Pack a tasty picnic dinner and enjoy a summer meal on the lawn, or choose from a variety of local food trucks offering lots of delicious food. Those of legal age can purchase beer from Wonderland, Big Choice or Kokopelli Brewing, or wine from local favorite Turquoise Mesa Winery. (Please note that while alcohol will be available for purchase, bringing your own is not permitted. Pets are best left at home too.) The event is sponsored by Broomfield Rotary, one of thousands of Rotary Clubs worldwide, to raise awareness about their role within the local community. According to Rotary International, these non-profit clubs bring together “dedicated people who share a passion for community service, connection, and friendship,” and who are committed to making a significant contribution in their area. Rotary’s motto is “service above self,” and Broomfield’s local chapter certainly lives up to that description.

FUN, DANCABLE MUSIC BY RADIO WAVES! Broomfield Rotary participates in a wide variety of local projects, including providing bikes for disadvantaged kids, supporting Meals on Wheels for housebound senior citizens, and sponsoring a recent computer lab addition at FRIENDS of Broomfield, a home for the developmentally disabled. Broomfield Rotary also emphasizes youth leadership and social involvement through its Young Rotarians and Emerging Leaders programs, helping young people learn how to best make a difference in their own communities and the world at large. Rotary Clubs offer friendship, business networking, public speaking training, continuing education opportunities, and much more. An informational booth will be staffed at the June 13 concert, and Broomfield Rotary welcomes guests at its weekly meetings, held every Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at Delvickio’s Italian Restaurant (on the corner of 287 and Miramonte). StargAzinG NIGHTS TI P S F O R S U MME R
By Dan Powers
You’ve probably not thought about this for a few months, but with the return of warmer nights it’s time to start looking to the sky. Can you locate the Little Dipper tonight? How about the constellations Hercules or Taurus? From Broomfield backyards you can see our fellow planets and celestial objects from meteors to satellites cruising near and far. And on a clear night, the unaided eye can still see more than a thousand stars. So tonight, step outside, turn off your porch lights, and spend a little time looking up!
24
THE BROOMFIELDER™ JUNE 2015
A
lthough stargazing while camping deep in the mountains will afford many more options, it isn’t crucial to be far from “light pollution” to still enjoy the vast views into limitless space. A pair of 10 x 50 binoculars is really all you need to see deep into the night sky. Telescopes can be expensive and likely unnecessary for casual stargazing. For novice observers, locating stars, planets, and other astronomical objects can be a bit overwhelming – so a good place to start is with the help of a star map. (You can download and make a free star chart at www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/make-a-starwheel.) Magazines such as StarDate, Astronomy, and Sky & Telescope provide monthly maps that show the locations of the planets. A hint for viewing your star maps: don’t use your white LED bike light to look at your chart in the dark. Choose a red light made just for astronomers. Your eyes will stay naturally dilated and you’ll be amazed what you can see: the bright stars that aren’t on your planisphere are probably planets and on your first night under the stars you may spot satellites, meteorites, and the occasional passing aircraft. According to EarthSky.org, on August 12 and 13 in the Northern Hemisphere we can see the Perseid meteor shower, “perhaps the most beloved meteor shower of the year.” The Perseid shower builds gradually to a peak, often with 50 to 100 meteors per hour in a dark sky, with the most meteors in the early morning hours before dawn. The meteors appear in all parts of the sky and are typically fast and bright and leave persistent trails. The timing relative to the moon’s phase those evenings (barely visible) makes this a great year for watching the Perseid meteor shower. On those nights you can follow great stargazing prompts on Twitter @earthskyscience.
A GREAT RESOURCE: The Bucket List for Backyard Stargazers by Brian Ventrudo shows you how, where, and when to see 11 of the most extraordinary astronomical sights and events that every stargazer should see at least once in their lives – for iPads on iTunes, Kindle, and PDF for $2.99.
CHECK OUT THESE APPS THAT REVEAL MORE ABOUT THE NIGHT SKY. WHILE THEY ARE AVAILABLE ON SMARTPHONES, THEY’RE EVEN BETTER ON iPADS OR OTHER TABLETS THAT GIVE YOU A LARGER VISIBLE SCREEN.
With StarWalk 2, you can hold your iPad above your head to get a view of the constellations and planets in real time. Other features – some free, others for a small fee – tell you whether the moon is waxing or waning, and describe deep sky objects, satellites, other planets in the Solar System, and more. Despite the name, with SkyView you don’t need a clear sky or even need to be outdoors to find out what’s overhead — just point with the camera and you’ll see constellations, planets, or satellites and maybe even spot a meteor shower or other type of interstellar event. Satellites including the Hubble Space Telescope and the International Space Station are shown with incredible graphics as they orbit the Earth. It even works with your new Apple iWatch you just bought, of course! Planets features two kinds of star map: the traditional sort and a 2D representation of the sky showing major constellations as they would be visible from above. Each planet and the Moon are represented as three-dimensional globes; 3D maps show the planets’ positions in the sky against the constellations. The 3D map even moves as you turn around and lift your arms, so it’s always displaying what is in front of you.
For more stargazing ideas check out the Denver Museum of Nature & Science www.dmns.org/planetarium; Chamberlin Observatory on the University of Denver campus www.denverastrosociety.org, and Fiske Planetarium at CU campus in Boulder www.colorado.edu/fiske. The Longmont Astronomical Society www.longmontastro.org hosts viewing parties and other meetings with experts too.

FARMERS’ O MARKETS PEN
SET TO
Headlined by Broomfield’s Market at the Church of the Holy Comforter By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS
If you have been waiting all winter for fresh local produce, wait no longer because farmers’ market season is finally upon us again! Broomfielders are very fortunate to have a variety of markets to choose from throughout the week.
T
he farmers’ market at the Holy Comforter Church at 1700 W 10th Ave. is Broomfield’s largest market and is celebrating its 5th season this summer. The Tuesday night market starts June 9 and will run every Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. until September 29. It started back in 2011 with 16 vendors and about 400 shoppers. Last summer, the market had 35 to 40 vendors and between 760 and 1,250 shoppers each week. This year additional produce vendors will be added as well as local businesses making fermented foods and specialty condiments. Every year the Holy Comforter market seems to get bigger and better and continues to add fun, new, and creative ideas and events. This year one of the food vendors, iPie Pizza will offer shoppers a wash station so that they can wash their freshly purchased produce and top their pizzas with it! Special events will be happening all summer long. Chipotle, in honor of Farmer’s Market Week, will be offering the first 500 shoppers on August 4 a $5 voucher to be redeemed at any of the market vendors. On August 11, an Iron Chef Cook-off contest will be held. There are so many other reasons this market is so special. The market is operated entirely by volunteers and is set up to continuously give back to the community in a variety of ways. Miller Farms, one of the produce vendors, and Great Harvest Bakery, one of the bakery vendors, contribute their unsold products to Broomfield FISH, a local non-profit that helps Broomfield families in need. Miller Farms donated eight tons of produce last year.
26
THE BROOMFIELDER™ JUNE 2015
Not only does the market give food to the community, any revenues generated in excess of the operating expenses are also given back to the community. Two local organizations will each receive $650 from the 2014 proceeds. Yet another way this market helps those in our community is through its very special and unique doubling of SNAP benefits. SNAP is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps. Through the assistance of a Jubilee Ministry grant from the National Episcopal Church, and with the support of some individual donors, the market continues to double the benefits redeemed by SNAP shoppers at the market. This is such an incredible way to help support those in need with access to more affordable, fresh, wholesome food for families. In cooperation with the Broomfield Health and Human Services Department, the market offers $10 monthly vouchers for residents in the Women’s Infants and Children’s nutrition program. The market at Holy Comforter Church is really more than just a market. It has become a true community gathering on Tuesday evenings as food trucks arrive and live music from local musicians entertain shoppers. It is a great way to spend a summer evening with your family.
If you are unable to attend the Holy Comforter market on Tuesday evening, there are many other local markets throughout the week.
Check out any of these great markets and bring the family for an evening or day of great food, music, and to support local businesses!

the Gathherbors– Neig
By Anne Rhoades
Having a block party is a great way to reconnect with neighbors and encourage a sense of community. Thankfully, the days of expensive and stressful block parties hosted by one family can be a thing of the past. course, the most important element of any successful party is organization. So, does one person in the neighborhood love to organize? If not, share the load to keep it carefree. Create a small group that is willing to gather information, send emails, and make executive decisions. Remember, no stress allowed! You can’t accommodate everyone’s preferences, so majority rules. Poll neighbors through email to decide on a date, time, place, and theme. Keep in mind that reserving park space, closing a street, and amplifying music, all require advanced planning, extra money, loads more time and effort, and possibly special permits. A different— and more economical solution is to divide and conquer; each home hosts one element of the party and neighbors spend 30 minutes or so at each home, rotating through the block. Next order of business, you need to pick a theme and decide just how elaborate you want to get. Block parties which include kids are going to look way different than an adult gathering.
28
THE BROOMFIELDER™ JUNE 2015
Some ideas for kid friendly parties include: • Make it an ice cream social, where the first home provides bowls and spoons, and each home after that provides a different ice cream flavor until the stop at the last home which provides toppings. • Have an activity theme. One house could be in charge of face painting, the next, a piñata, the next, sidewalk chalk or a bean bag toss. If it’s a really hot day, a water balloon fight or a sprinkler run could be a great way to cool off. Along the way, some homes could provide simple snacks or refreshments like crackers and popsicles.
• Have a cookie and recipe exchange, where each house offers their version of a cookie, whether it is old fashioned chocolate chip or a gluten free carrot and raisin version. • Set a central theme like a time travel party and then assign each home a particular decade, such as the twenties, forties, fifties or eighties. Each specific home should showcase music and provide a snack and drink from that era. For example, the forties-era home could offer big band music, deviled eggs, cocktail sausages, and Shirley Temples to drink. The fifties-era stop could offer milkshakes and dancing to the Big Bopper and Elvis. The sixties home could feature music by Janis Joplin, with fluffy Jell-O desserts and onion dip. For even more fun, have people dress up according to their era and include a costume contest at the last house.
• Pandora Radio Station theme: Each home picks their favorite radio station and hosts thirty minutes of fun and food or drink centered around their favorite music genre. For example, the first home might play beach music and adopt a Tropical Theme. Perhaps they could hand out leis, and offer tropical drinks and pineapple. The next house could play Disco music while offering a salad bar and Jell-O shots. At the next home, there might be a “Rat Pack” theme boasting Long Island Ice Teas, shrimp cocktails, Frank Sinatra music, and casino games played against the house for dollar scratch tickets. For opera music lovers, perhaps a glass of wine and cannolis would be great before heading to the next house for country music, homemade French fries and gravy and apple pie moonshine shots. The trick is that the organizer doesn’t have to decide all of this. Each family decides how they want to participate and they are in charge of their own contribution.
There are so many options, so be creative! The goal is to keep it stress free. And who knows? Your next neighborhood block party might be the highlight of the summer and the start of a yearly tradition.
Sometimes it’s fun to have a kidless night out, so for adults only try one of these ideas: • Make it an evening affair. You can hire a couple of teenage babysitters to care for everyone’s children at one house, making it convenient to check in throughout the night. • Try Fine Dining with a multi-course meal. The first home provides drinks, the second home provides hors d’oeuvres, the third home offers salad, the fourth soup, the fifth and sixth an entrée, and so forth. Don’t forget to assign desserts and plan for refills on refreshments.

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT
DRIVING AND PUTTING FOR GOOD: Bal Swan’s Golf4Kids By Dan Powers
Looking for a chance for exercise, sunshine, and friendly competition all in support of a worthy cause? The 31st Annual Bal Swan Golf4kidz tournament on June 12 provides all of the above in addition to supporting a globally recognized school that is leading the way in special needs education.
T
he event gets started with a ceremonial “first putt” by one or two kids to kick off the event and all the morning golfers get breakfast as well. Everyone plays 18 holes as part of a foursome scramble including a golf cart. “We’re hoping to fill the tournament. We can have 288 golfers as the Broadlands has donated the course for the entire day,” says Beverly Ferguson, Interim Executive Director of Bal Swan. “We couldn’t have this event without the kindness they show year after year.” As the day progresses, a sit-down lunch is provided along with beer, game balls, prizes, team photos, and a popular heads and tails auction too. Look for some of Bal Swan’s children operating a lemonade stand on the course; their enthusiasm and happiness tell the Bal Swan story without words. Throughout the day, all of the golfers get to interact with the students, parents, and faculty who benefit directly from the event. The Bal Swan Children’s Center is a preschool that serves children of all abilities and those with special needs blended in the classroom. Each year, more than 100 preschool children with physical and developmental challenges or speech/ language delays find themselves playing and learning alongside “typically developing” children. At Bal Swan, programs are designed to have all the kids involved in activities together. As for the golf tournament, “There are several things we use the proceeds for, including scholarships to low income families whose special needs children are attending the school,” says Beverly. Bal Swan has been a crucial part of the education of more than 9,100 students during more than 50 years in operation. In 2015 they are looking to raise more than $700,000 to support their annual operating budget. Beverly points out Hunter Douglas is the long-time sponsor with participants affiliated with the company flying in from around the country each year to participate in the tournament. In addition to their support of Golf4Kidz, for more than 20 years, Hunter Douglas has donated and maintained the blinds at the school. “They’ve been an unbelievable supporter all these years,” she says. “We are so grateful for how our community comes together to support us,” says Beverly, who has been with Bal Swan for more than 14 years. “We hope some new people, old friends, and golfers of all ages join us for a fun day.” Registrations for the Golf4Kids event can be made at www.golf4kidz.org or by calling 303-466-6308.
