The City and County of Broomfield Stormwater Management Program would like to remind you that when conducting your landscaping projects, have your landscape material delivered in your driveway or find a staging area on your property. One of the leading causes of water pollution is landscaping material (rocks, compost, dirt, etc.) that is deposited in the curb and gutter. This kind of material can get washed away in stormwater runoff. The City and County of Broomfield works hard to maintain its storm sewer system and drainage ways. Storm sewers discharge directly into creeks, streams and ponds untreated. It is illegal and a violation of the Broomfield Municipal Code to dispose of or allow materials other than stormwater to discharge into the storm sewer system. Thank you for assisting the City and County of Broomfield in its efforts to keep our water clean. For more information, contact the Stormwater Management Program at 303.464.5648 or go to www.broomfield.org/wastewater

SCHOOL NEWS

Summer Reading Program Starts June 1

With Physical Fitness Theme By Kristen Beckman

This year’s summer reading program at the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library incorporates elements of physical fitness, wellness, and sports. The program begins June 1 and runs through July 31. Patrons can pre-register online before completing their registration in person at the library. The children’s program theme is “On your mark, get set, read” and is open to children from newborns through entering fifth grade. Babies must be read any 10 books and participate in 10 early literacy activities from a list of 20 with their parent or other adult. Toddlers and preschoolers are expected to read or listen to 45 books, and elementary age children are asked to spend 15 hours reading. Children in these two age groups are awarded prizes after each 15 books or five hours of reading. Prizes include passes to The Bay, Chippers Lanes, and Lakeside Amusement Park, as well as coupons for Benihana and Subway. All participants receive a free book when the entire program is complete and are invited to an endof-summer reading party at The Bay. The only rules of the program are that participants must read a book they haven’t read before and their selections must be appropriate for their reading level. The teen program, which is open to students in 6th through 12th grades, is themed “Get in the Game: Read!” Teens will be asked to read six hours per level and will be entered to win one of three grand-prize baskets. The theme of this year’s adult program is “Exercise your mind – Read!”

14

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JUNE 2016

The library will support the program with its regular story times and activities as well as special events. The Wonderful Wednesdays program for elementary-aged children and the Fabulous Fridays program for ages 3 to 6 will offer sports and physical fitness-themed entertainment, including martial arts exhibits and dance programs. In addition, the library presents movie nights on Tuesdays and baby story times on Thursdays. Schedules are available at the library or online. The library also is planning its annual early literacy fair, which will take place July 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Children from newborn to 5 years old are invited to bring their parents to the library and participate in a wide variety of activities, such as crafts, worm observation, and social and emotional literacy activities with Bal Swan Children’s Center. The library encourages families to participate in the reading program together by turning off electronics, setting a timer and reading together, said children’s librarian Susan Person. It is especially important for adults to read with and around their children to model a love of reading for pleasure, she said. Reading during the summer is a crucial weapon against what is called summer slide – the loss of reading skills during the long break from school. Children who read over the summer are more likely to start school in the fall at a similar level to where they left off before summer break. Those who don’t are more likely to fall behind, which can be cumulative, said Person.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JUNE 2016

BACK TO SPORTS By Lukas McWhorter, MD

W

ith the end of school, comes the beginning of many sports leagues and camps. We all know that sports leagues and camps are a great way for our kids to stay in shape, but you might not know why a yearly physical before summer sports activity is so important. There are two main parts to a sports physical: your medical history and the physical exam.

• The medical history includes questions about illnesses and injuries you have had. This will focus on medical problems that run in your family and a discussion of any medicine you take on a daily basis. • During the physical exam, the doctor will: o Measure your height o Check your weight o Take your blood pressure o Listen to your heart and lungs o Feel your abdomen o Look in your ears, nose, and throat o Check your eyesight This is also a great opportunity to discuss any questions you have about your health and playing sports. The goal of a sports physical is to determine if an athlete is healthy enough to participate in sports and help minimize the possibility of a sports-related injury. If an existing injury or potential problem is identified during the sports exam, action can be taken to avoid future problems and to rehabilitate an existing injury. Sports physicals are not just for our kids; this is a convenient time to remind the whole family that it is time for an annual health check. An annual exam is a good idea for anyone hoping to head off health problems early.

Board certified by the American Academy of Family Physicians, Dr. Lukas McWhorter practices with CHPG Primary Care – Thornton, located at Thornton Neighborhood Health Center, 4075 E. 128th Ave., Thornton, CO 80241. People’s Choice Awards will be given for Best Tasting Food and Best Tasting Beverage. “Our People’s Choice contest is a highlight of the evening and with so many great choices on the floor, attendees will have a great time tasting again and making sure they vote just right!” said Kerr. “Last year’s winners, Kokopelli and Tiller’s, will be bringing their A game so our other vendors should be ready!” Other Taste It sponsors include: the 1STBANKCenter, Wells Fargo Advisors - Rick Saunders, and Buca di Beppo. Taste It Broomfield promotes Broomfield’s ever-growing food, wine, and beer culture, and gives residents a chance to try out offerings from across the community. Join the fun and for only $25 you can taste your way across the local restaurant scene.

To purchase tickets for only $25 visit www.BroomfieldChamber.com. Tickets will NOT be sold at the door. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets are on sale online only through June 8 or until sold out! Don’t delay!

Non-Profit Fair Joins Taste It This year Taste It will also feature several Broomfield non-profit organizations. Guests are encouraged to visit the booths at Taste It and find out how to get involved in their efforts to support our community. “We just started a non-profit committee with the Chamber to see what we could do to assist each other,” said Mike Lutz, Broomfield Chamber Board Member and Broomfield FISH Food Pantry Manager. “Because the Taste It event was such a great event last year and Broomfield FISH was there, we thought it would be great for other non-profits to be there too and make the event even better.” “Taste It is a wonderful community get together to try our fabulous restaurants and breweries. So why not showcase what some non-profits do and see if people want to get involved. The non-profits we have spoken with are excited about the event,” said Lutz. American Cancer Society, Broomfield FISH, A Precious Child, Cans For Hope, Bal Swan Children’s Center, Foothills United Way, the Broomfield Community Foundation, FRIENDS of Broomfield, Inc., and Senior Resources of Broomfield are planning to attend.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JUNE 2016

Five Guys Burgers and Fries 4480 W. 121st Ave. Broomfield, CO 80020 720-887-5989

Five Guys started in the Washington, DC area in 1986 when Jerry and Janie Murrell offered this advice to the four young Murrell brothers: "Start a business or go to college.” The business route won and the Murrell family opened a carry-out burger joint. Five Guys serves only hand-formed burgers cooked to perfection on a grill along with freshcut fries cooked in pure peanut oil. A fifth brother was born and, as the family grew, so did the business. Today, with more than 1,350 locations nationwide, Broomfielders are lucky to have Five Guys right here in town.

Go Fish Sushi

2055 W. 136th Ave., Unit B106 Broomfield, CO 80023 720-593-1888 Go Fish Sushi is packed with personality and local flavors, and is a great place to grab a beautifully prepared Japanese meal and a drink at the bar which serves a variety of wines, local beers, and imported sakes. This neighborhood sushi restaurant offers Japanese rice and noodle dishes like the unagi do; white rice topped with smoked eel as well as the hot orgasm roll with tempura green chile, cream cheese and shrimp topped with kani, baked in a cream sauce & sriracha. Be sure to also try the low-carb Go Fish Naruto roll with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado, and masago.

Farmers’ Markets and Bring Farm Fresh Fruits and Veggies Home This Summer

By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS

Nothing says summer like fresh fruit and vegetables from the farmers’ market. Broomfield has various markets in multiple locations throughout the week.

T

he largest market in Broomfield is on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Holy Comforter Church off of Hwy 287 and 10th Avenue. This market started in 2011 with only 16 vendors and about 400 shoppers. Now the market boasts more than 35 vendors and at least 1,000 shoppers each week! All the produce vendors from last summer will be returning this year and the market will have a few new ones as well. This year’s Grand Opening will be on Tuesday, June 14, which also happens to be Flag Day. The market will be celebrating with free flags for all shoppers as well as a patriotic scavenger hunt. The Holy Comforter market is not your typical market as they have special events almost every week. On June 21, the market will celebrate “kids’ day.” Kids can make their own pizza and there will be other special activities geared towards younger shoppers. New this year will be a “Zucchini 500.” The event will entail participants racing zucchinis similar to soap box racing. The market will also once again hold the annual Iron Chef competition later in the summer. If you want to make an evening of visiting the market, grab dinner from one of the many food trucks that gather each week and listen to one of the many great bands they have lined up. One thing that makes this market unique is the focus on community outreach. The market doubles the value of SNAP benefits redeemed at the market! This allows shoppers on food

assistance more access to fresh locally grown food. They also offer residents enrolled in the WIC nutrition assistance program free $10 vouchers to purchase produce at the market. Through special support from Chipotle last year, they were able to provide $2,500 in $10 coupons for food from our vendors. Dave Carter, the volunteer manager of the market states that this year they are really trying to reach out to single moms and show that fresh fruits and vegetables are affordable for everyone. One of the vendors also donates their unsold produce to Broomfield FISH (a local non-profit that helps Broomfield residents in need) at the end of each of the markets. They also offer free booths each week to area non-profits to help them connect with the local community. Lastly, the market is completely operated by volunteers. Revenues in excess of the operating costs are given back to our community. If you are unable to attend the Holy Comforter market on Tuesday evening, there are many other nearby markets throughout the week. The town of Erie holds a market on Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. starting May 19. This market is located on Wells Street between Pierce and Briggs. The City of Louisville hosts its weekly farmers’ markets on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. starting May 28 on Front Street. Westminster also has a market on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. starting June 4, located on 72nd Ave. and Sheridan.

Summertime Events:

K R ” A P e h t n i C I JUNE 18 “MUS By Elizabeth Buckingham

Summer is finally here, and there is no better way to enjoy this amazing season than listening to great music under the stars. Broomfield offers plenty of family-friendly activities each summer, and one of the best is certainly Music in the Park, sponsored by Broomfield Rotary. Music in the Park will take place this year on Saturday, June 18, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Broomfield Commons.

This terrific free event, organized to highlight Broomfield Rotary’s community involvement, certainly wouldn’t be Music in the Park without some great tunes. Wear your dancing shoes, because this year you’ll be tapping your toes to live music by Superpop, a great local band playing classic rock and 90s covers with an emphasis on “fun, danceable music.” Broomfield Rotary will provide plenty of kids’ activities at Music in the Park too. North Metro Fire and Rescue will be on hand to offer fire safety and paramedic demonstrations focused on keeping your family safe at home, plus they’ll bring a real fire truck kids can climb on and explore. Broomfield Police will have a police cruiser to view, and bouncy castles and face painting are guaranteed to keep children of all ages entertained! Pack a tasty picnic dinner and enjoy a summer meal on the lawn, or choose from a variety of local food trucks, including Infinitus Pie, Corner Gourmet, Modern Edge, and Nothing Bundt Cakes, offering lots of delicious food. Those of legal age can purchase beer from Wonderland, Nighthawk, or Four Noses Brewing, or wine from local favorite Turquoise Mesa Winery. (Please note that while alcohol will be available for purchase, bringing your own is not permitted. Pets are best left at home too.) Proceeds from food and beverage sales will benefit Broomfield Early Childhood Council and Broomfield FISH. The event is sponsored by Broomfield Rotary to draw attention to their role within the local community. According to Clayton Shearer, Broomfield Rotary president-elect, the group “focuses primarily on seniors and kids.” Rotary brings together “dedicated

people who share a passion for community service, connection, and friendship,” and who are committed to making a significant contribution in their area. Rotary’s motto is “service above self,” and Broomfield’s local chapter strives to live up to that description. Broomfield Rotary participates in a wide variety of local projects, including providing dictionaries to all Broomfield third-graders and supporting Meals on Wheels for housebound senior citizens. Broomfield Rotary also emphasizes youth leadership and social involvement through its Young Rotarians and Emerging Leaders programs, helping young people learn how to best make a difference in their own communities and the world at large. Rotary Clubs offer friendship, business networking, public speaking training, continuing education opportunities, and much more. An informational booth will be staffed at the June 18 concert, and Broomfield Rotary welcomes guests at its weekly meetings, held every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Delvickio’s Italian Restaurant. For additional information, visit broomfieldrotary.org.

Mark your calendar now and plan to bring the whole family for this great summer evening out!

June Depot Museum Friends Speaker Series Takes on the

Rocky Flats Story from 1952 to 1992 The Broomfield Depot Museum Friends June 1 installment of its speaker series brings Broomfield’s history to life in a talk by Murph Widdowfield of the Rocky Flats Cold War Museum who will discuss the history of Rocky Flats from an employee’s view. Widdowfield began working at Rocky Flats in 1957 as a laborer, and went on to become an industrial contractor and consultant, completing many projects there. Through an introductory overview of the history of Rocky Flats, from Project Apple – the code name of the project to find an ideal site for the nuclear weapons plant – to its closure in 1992, Widdowfield will explain why the site was chosen, what was made there, and what led to its closure: the end of the Cold War. Rocky Flats has now transitioned from a top secret government weapons facility to an open site with wildlife for the community to see and enjoy today. Widdowfield is president of the Board of Directors of the Rocky Flats Cold War Museum, formed to ensure that the history of Rocky Flats was preserved. More information about the museum can be found at www. rockyflatscoldwarmuseum.org . The speaker series continues on the first Wednesday of each month through Oct. 5. There is no admission, but donations are appreciated. Most talks will be at the historic Crescent Grange building, at 7901 West 120th Ave., beginning at 7:00 p.m. For further information about the museum, call 303-460-6824 or visit the museum’s website www.atbroomfielddepotmuseum.org. The Broomfield Depot Museum is open on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and is located at 2201 West 10th Ave. in Broomfield. There is no admission, but donations are appreciated. For more information about the Broomfield Depot Museum Friends, visit broomfielddepotfriends.org. To learn more about the Broomfield Crescent Grange see crescentgrange.org

MAKE-AHEAD By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham

Brunch Ideas

Days are longer and the weather is warmer, which means it’s time to start thinking about summer entertaining. From bridal showers to graduations, it is a wonderful time to open your home to friends and family, and easy make-ahead brunch dishes mean a more relaxed event for the host! Serve these egg bakes with warm croissants, a selection of artisanal jams and butters and a fresh fruit plate. To drink, offer mimosas and sparkling water infused with strawberry and mint. These dishes make great leftovers and can be taken to work or school, too!

Kale and Goat Cheese Frittata Cups Frittatas are essentially baked omelettes, and ingredients can be substituted as desired. Any dark leafy greens, such as chard or spinach, can be used instead of kale in this recipe. Save the stems for a stir-fry!

Bacon, Potato, and Egg Breakfast Casserole • • • • • • • • • • •

4 slices thick bacon, cut into 1/2-inch strips 1 large yellow onion, diced 1 yellow bell pepper, seeded and diced 4 cloves garlic, minced 1/3 cup sun-dried tomatoes, chopped 2 tsp. salt, divided 8 large eggs 1 cup whole milk 1 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 3 cups frozen diced potatoes, unthawed

1. Heat oven to 350°F. Lightly coat a 13 x 9” baking dish with baking spray. 2. Place bacon slices in large skillet and cook over medium heat until crisp. Add onion, pepper, garlic, tomatoes, and 1 tsp. salt and cook over medium heat until vegetables are fragrant and soft, about 5 more minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. 3. In large bowl, beat eggs and milk thoroughly. Whisk in remaining tsp. of salt and the black pepper. Stir in cheese, frozen potatoes, and bacon-vegetable mixture. Pour the whole mixture into prepared baking dish. At this point, the casserole can be covered and refrigerated for up to 24 hours. 4. Bake for 40 minutes, or until eggs are firm and top is slightly golden; a knife inserted in the center should come out clean. Serve warm or at room temperature.

32

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JUNE 2016

• • • • • • • • •

2 cups chopped kale 1 garlic clove, thinly sliced 1 tbsp. olive oil 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes 8 large eggs ¼ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. Freshly ground black pepper ½ tsp. dried thyme ¼ cup goat cheese, crumbled

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Remove leaves from the kale ribs; wash and dry the leaves and slice into 1/2-inch-wide strips. 2. In a 10-inch nonstick skillet, cook garlic in oil over medium-high heat for 30 seconds. Add kale and red pepper flakes and cook until wilted, 1 to 2 minutes; don’t let garlic brown. 3. In a medium bowl, beat eggs with salt and pepper. Add kale and thyme to the egg mixture. 4. Spray eight cups of a 12-cup muffin tin with non-stick spray. Divide egg mixture between prepared cups and sprinkle tops with goat cheese. Fill unused cups with ½ inch water to prevent warping. Bake until frittatas are set in the center, about 25 to 30 minutes. 5. Frittatas are best eaten warm from the oven or within the next day, but leftovers can be kept refrigerated and reheated for up to a week.

Bill and Jane’s family had struggled since the accident. Their daughter was only 13 when it happened, but it was clear she would be disabled for the balance of her life. Now 23, she is dependant upon government assistance for her survival and medical care. Bill and Jane thought they did not need estate planning. Their friends said, “Just put everything in joint tenancy, because it is simple and avoids probate.” Thinking about their disabled daughter, they sought guidance from a counseling-oriented attorney who took time to learn more about them, their estate, and their goals. Their primary objective was to protect their daughter after they died. The attorney worked with them to put together a plan that places their savings, life insurance and home in a trust for their daughter following their deaths. This prevents their daughter from being disqualified from the benefits she is receiving from government programs when she receives her inheritance. As a result, the inheritance can pay for things the government programs do not cover, providing additional comfort to their daughter. Estate planning can and should be more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can provide many additional advantages that protect your family. Most of these protections are ignored in cookie-cutter form driven estate plans. Individuals should explore all of the benefits a properly designed estate plan can provide to them while they are alive, and provide to their spouse and their families after their death.

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT

Bal Swan Golf4Kids Returns June 10 By Dan Powers

“Adults Having Fun to Help Kids”

T

he 32nd Annual Bal Swan Golf4Kids charity golf tournament on June 10 breaks the mold of typical fundraisers with outdoor exercise, healthy competition, and more than 200 friends enjoying a beautiful day – all to help ensure kids have a better chance at succeeding in life. Bal Swan Children’s Center is a preschool that serves children with special needs alongside peers who are developing typically, through an innovative and inclusive model of education and a novel, positive approach to social-emotional development. The school serves more than 520 students annually, and has served more than 9,100 children and their families through the past 50 years. With this annual golf tournament, hundreds of golfers and duffers alike have a fun, relaxing time supporting this globally-recognized non-profit school. “Clearly this is about raising money, but we like to make it fun for people too,” said Beverly “Bev” Ferguson, Director of Operations for Bal Swan. “There are two flights, at 7:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. with prizes donated by various sponsors to help entice people to participate. We have one of our little people out there to kick things off, they hit the first ball at the start of the morning and afternoon sessions. It’s a bit of a celebrity spotlight for the kids who get that role each year,” she said. Several kids are there with their parents throughout the day – hosting a lemonade stand where students accept donations for treats. Their enthusiasm and happiness tells the Bal Swan story without words. As in years past, Sil-Tehar Motors sponsors a Hole-In-One contest; you could win a two-year lease on a 2016 Ford Escape with just the right shot from the tee. “We’re also going to have a longest drive, closest to the hole contest, and more,” said Bev. At one hole Bev’s daughter Stefanie Ferguson – an LPGA pro – will hit the first shot for people if they make a donation. “She hits from the woman’s tee on a Par-5 hole and people love having her help.” Over the lunch hour there will be a heads-or-tails contest for prizes such as a spot for a foursome in the afternoon flight. There will be paddle-raisers as well, with money raised going toward specific upgrades and needs at the school. The Golf4Kids event is one of the main ways Bal Swan covers the school’s budget shortfall for children with disabilities to receive physical, speech, warm water pool and occupational therapies along with preschool programming for a full school year. For 2016 Bal Swan needs to fundraise more than $737,000. “We feel that one of our greatest gifts we give to our students and their families is the realization that everyone has different abilities and we can all get along,” said Bev. “People in Broomfield say they can tell the kids who have attended Bal Swan because of how they interact with children with different abilities. We hope that’s a gift that follows with them the rest of their lives.” Find details about the Golf4Kids event at www.balswan.org/golf or call 303-466-6308.

Taste It is Back and BIGGER Than Ever! By Jennifer Kerr, President and CEO, Broomfield Chamber of Commerce

The Broomfield Chamber is excited to bring back Taste It Broomfield on Thursday, June 9 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This is the best way to try a sampling of the food and drinks available from many of the unique restaurants, breweries, and wineries in the area for just $25. If you attended last year, you know this is not a sample-on-atoothpick kind of event! Attendees left the event full and happy, with a souvenir Taste It glass! Last year the event sold out, so we have added more tickets and vendors. Attendees will also receive a Passport to remember all of the vendors and to vote for People’s Choice Awards for Best Tasting Beverage, Best Tasting Food, and Favorite Non-Profit. The winner of the Non-Profit Award will receive a check for $500! Mike Lutz, Pantry Manager for Broomfield FISH and a Director on the Broomfield Chamber Board, has invited other non-profit organizations to join the event this year. Find out how they are having a positive impact in our community and how you can get involved. The 1STBANK Center will be hosting again this year and we are looking forward to returning vendors from 2015 and new vendors that will be joining us this year. Local musician and fan favorite, Patrick Keating, will be returning as our entertainment for the evening. We are proud to continue our partnership with Loudmouth Media, publisher of The Broomfielder™ and Spotlight® Magazines. This has allowed us to promote the event to almost 110,000 residents and businesses to grow this into a must-attend community event! This event is for those 21 years and older and you must purchase your non-refundable tickets online in advance at www.BroomfieldChamber. com. There is a link on our homepage to the event.
