FROM THE

Restaurants Bring Us Together “From an early age I understood that cooking was never going to be a job, it’s a passion.” ~ Gordon Ramsay

T

hroughout history, food might be the single most powerful instrument for bringing people together. Whether on a picnic blanket, at grandmother’s dining table or in an elegant restaurant booth, we gather, we pause, we sit, we converse, we connect, we nourish, we savor, we unite – over food. For the preparer of the food, beyond serving a delicious, impressive, and satisfying plate, these are the underlying goals – unite and make people happy. Growing up in an Italian family, I was raised to be passionate about food, and about uniting around food. Today most of that passion is manifest in our own kitchens over small and large family gatherings, often with underlying conversations about what it would be like to have a family restaurant someday. After all, shouldn’t others be able to enjoy our delectable dishes too? And wouldn’t it be fun? My grandparents lived that dream back in the 1960s right here in Broomfield when they operated DiCino’s Italian Restaurant in the Manor Hotel that once stood on the corner of Hwy 287 and Midway Blvd. where Walgreen’s now sits. Through my parents and my uncles I have heard a few fun stories of those days, as well as received some understanding of exactly how hard it is to run a restaurant and “be” in that business day in and day out. The restaurant business might sound like a romantic livelihood, but for anyone who has done it, the truth is probably somewhere between passion and crazy. So thank goodness for all of those people who embark on the journey! For those who have embraced the dream, hung up a sign, and daily prepare meals for the pure enjoyment of others! Hats off to the restaurateurs – especially those right here in Broomfield. Each June we highlight some of Broomfield’s eateries in our restaurant issue. The topic is timed to line up with Broomfield Chamber of Commerce Taste It event, which The Broomfielder is proud to once again sponsor. So, peruse our pages and visit some of the featured locales. Then join us at Taste It for a sampling of local flavors. Between the two activities, you will easily end up with a great summer restaurant list to satisfy your own food passions.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Prizes will be awarded after the talk to individuals who can answer some fun questions about the presentation. Eldorado Springs, between Broomfield and Boulder is now a hiking launch point, but it was once a popular get-away for area residents who wanted to enjoy time away from the city at the hotel and swim in the renowned hot springs there. The speaker series is featured on the second Wednesday of each month through October. DOING SOME LANDSCAPI NG IN THE YARD THIS SUMMER? The City and County of Broomfield Stormwater Management Program would like to remind you that when conducting your landscaping projects, have your landscape material delivered in your driveway or find a staging area on your property. One of the leading causes of water pollution is landscaping material (rocks, compost, dirt, etc.) that is deposited in the curb and gutter. This kind of material can get washed away in stormwater runoff. The City and County of Broomfield works hard to maintain its storm sewer system and drainage ways. Storm sewers discharge directly into creeks, streams and ponds untreated. It is illegal and a violation of the Broomfield Municipal Code to dispose of or allow materials other than stormwater to discharge into the storm sewer system. Thank you for assisting the City and County of Broomfield in its efforts to keep our water clean. For more information, contact the Stormwater Management Program at 303.464.5648 or go to www.broomfield.org/wastewater

Old Estate Plans Can Cost You Taxes Offered by Dolan & Associates, P.C.

Estate planning in the past usually focused on helping you avoid death taxation. Significant changes were made to the tax code at the beginning of 2013 that changed the landscape regarding how people plan their estates. Estate plans prepared prior to the beginning of 2013 contained instructions to avoid death taxation. In order to protect families from death taxes, the plan had to sacrifice some income tax advantages you gained by dying. That old plan could now substantially increase the income tax liability your family faces after your death. Many families have failed to recognize how these ongoing changes in the legal environment can significantly affect their estate plans. Most attorneys do not inform their clients of needed changes after the preparation of the original documents. If you designed your estate plan prior to 2013, you should have it reviewed and eliminate these income tax disadvantages. In a constantly changing legal environment, maintaining your estate plan is a critical element to its success. If your estate plan is going to produce the result you actually expect, you need to have an ongoing relationship with an attorney that proactively notifies you of changes that affect your plan. This is the only way to protect your plan’s effectiveness from being eroded by both legal and personal changes. The documents don’t magically change in your safe deposit box. Attend one of our educational workshops to learn how an estate plan maintenance program can benefit you and your family.

By Brad Anderson, MD Board-Certified, Family Medicine

Hiking and camping are two of my family’s favorite activities. If they’re yours, as well, you know that certain safety precautions are just part of the journey. As you pack for your next adventure, here are three quick tips I like to share with my outdoor-loving patients. 1. Ticks happen. Use a repellent… and take your tweezers. There’s a growing awareness that these tiny pests can carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. While most tick bites do not result in serious health issues, checking for any that have attached themselves to your skin and removing them promptly is important. My suggestion: use fine-tipped tweezers to grab the tick as close as possible to where it has bitten your skin. Slowly and steadily, pull the tick straight away until it releases. If you should experience a rash, joint or muscle pain, or fatigue in the days following, do see your doctor. 2. Be mosquito alert. These irritating insects are known to carry a number of diseases, including the Zika and West Nile viruses. Colorado had cases of both last summer. There are several good repellents to consider — just be sure to read the label so you understand what active ingredients it contains and how to use it most effectively. While some of these products should not be used for newborns, several containing DEET are considered safe for babies two months and older.

3. Don’t skimp on the sunscreen. That same elevation that gives you breath-taking views when you hike the Colorado high country also increases ultraviolet ray exposure. In fact, your exposure here may be 25% greater than that experienced at sea level due to the altitude. We suggest you apply sunscreen liberally about 15 minutes before going outdoors. Select an SPF of 30, reapplying every hour or two if you’re active or swimming. Suncreens with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide are your best bets as they reflect UV rays. These ingredients also tend to be less irritating to sensitive skin. (And don’t forget your sunglasses!) Have a great summer. Perhaps we’ll meet on the hiking trail!

Broomfield FISH provides emergency assistance, including food, to families in need. Food is distributed on a monthly basis. Many people tend to think about donating to FISH and other charitable organizations during the winter holiday season, but are less aware of neighbors in need at other times during the year. The summer months can be particularly challenging for families who depend on free or reduced-price lunches throughout the school year. The FISH Youth Advisory Board, or YAB, is comprised of area middle and high school students, who raise FISH awareness in their schools, conduct fundraising activities, and participate in selected events that FISH is conducting or attending. YAB is sponsoring this food drive to help meet the summer food pantry needs at FISH so don’t forget your donation!

LAWN GAMES Add Fun Competition to Summer Parties By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS

Though we had a wet and rather snowy spring, summer is finally here! Time for baseball games, swimming pools, and back yard BBQs. BBQs are generally for relaxing and enjoying food but adding a few lawn games can bring your BBQ to a whole new level of fun. Many games do not require a lot of equipment and much of the equipment can even be homemade. In the past few years, there has been a resurgence of classic games and many fun new cool games to try as well.

30

Bocce Ball

Cornhole

One of the oldest lawn games is the classic Italian game of Bocce Ball. This strategic game can be played with two players, or two teams of two, three, or four, which will determine how many balls are played with. To start a game, the pallina, pallino, or jack is rolled or tossed by a member of the team having won the coin toss. The object of the game is to get your ball closest to the pallina. Players alternate throwing balls, and this continues until both teams have thrown all their Bocce balls. After both teams have exhausted all their balls, a frame is over and points are awarded.

Another game that has gained popularity at tailgate events but is also a great lawn game is Cornhole or Bean Bag Toss. Players alternate throwing bean bags at a raised platform with a hole in the middle of it. Cornhole boards are fairly easy to make and customizing the paint or bean bags with your favorite team, state logo, country flag or any other design is a fun way to add personalization. Cornhole is a great game for a BBQ as it is very simple to set up and even kids can get in on the fun.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JUNE 2017

Spikeball A new game that has been gaining popularity is Spikeball, which according to the Spikeball website is described as “If Volleyball and Foursquare had a baby.” The sport, also referred to as Roundnet, is played with teams of two, with a taut hula hoop-sized net placed between the teams. A player starts a point by serving the ball down on the net so it ricochets up at his opponents. The team has up to three hits between them to control the ball and bounce it back off the net. When they miss, the opposite team scores. There are no boundaries and once a point starts, players can move or hit the ball anywhere. The game, since being seen on “Shark Tank,” an entrepreneurial reality show, has gained popularity throughout the world.

Giant Jenga Giant Jenga has also gained popularity at bars and tailgates but is great for a backyard BBQ. You can buy giant Jenga at many retailers but you can make your own as well using two-by-four pieces of wood to make a super-sized version of the famous stacking game. There are many websites with tutorials to show you how. The game is played exactly like the original where the goal is to keep removing pieces without letting the tower fall.

Lawn Twister

Lawn Bowling Lawn bowling or lawn bowls is a very old game that is played all over the world. The object of the game is to get your bowls, which are biased so they'll roll in a curve, closer to the jack than your opponents. Your team receives one point for each bowl closer to the jack than your opponent's closest bowl. You can play with just a few people or teams of two to four players.

Lawn twister is one more take on the classic version. Using a circular stencil, spray paint different colored circles into a twister game board. Other fun and very simple games that kids would love include a blanket race. Grab some blankets and attempt to pull your partner across the lawn as fast as you possibly can. This is much easier if your partner is a kid! Kids will love playing “pop the balloon.” Players have a balloon tied to each of their ankles and everyone runs around the yard trying to pop other player's balloons using their feet, whoever keeps their balloons intact the longest is the winner.

Next time you are planning your summer BBQ, add in a few lawn games to spice it up and keep all your guests entertained and having fun!

In a world where perfection is paramount, Celestine North lives a flawless life. She’s a model daughter and sister, she’s well liked by friends and classmates. She’s logical, seeing the world in black and white. But then Celestine encounters a situation where she makes an instinctive decision. She breaks a rule and now faces lifechanging repercussions. She could be imprisoned. She could be branded. She could be found flawed.

Daniel and Natasha meet on the very day she is to be deported from the United States. Tasha came to New York City (illegally) with her parents when she was 8, so she has very few memories of Jamaica. She does not want to go back. Her life is in New York and she has friends, makes good grades, and is hoping to go to college. And now she has met a boy who she thinks might become someone very special. But they may only have a few hours left.

Celeana Sardothien, the 18-year-old Assassin of Aderlan, is betrayed and sentenced to the salt mines of Endovier. After a year, however, she is given an opportunity: If she wins a contest to become the king’s champion, she will be granted a four-year contract working as an assassin for the empire she hates, at the end of which time she will be freed. A recommendation from my own teenage daughter, this title and the rest of the series (four books + a prequel made up of short stories) kept me engaged and eager for more. - Sarah Brennan-Green, Patron Services Associate, Adult Services

Stef Soto, Taco Queen |

By Jennifer Torres

Now that she’s in seventh grade, Stef is horribly embarrassed to be picked up in a ratty old taco truck. She would prefer to walk home from school like everyone else, but her overprotective parents absolutely won’t allow that. Stef’s dad has been operating his truck for years now, making tacos, burritos, and quesadillas for eager crowds. Then suddenly new city regulations are proposed that threaten all the local food trucks. As the possibility looms that they might lose Tia Perla, Stef is motivated to take action. A moving story of family relationships, multicultural issues, and blooming independence. - Susan Dunn, Librarian 2, Children’s Services

A Season of Daring Greatly | By Ellen Emerson White 18-year-old Jill Cafferty is a star baseball player. And yes, that’s baseball - not softball. She makes history by being the first woman drafted by a major league baseball team, so instead of going off to college, Jill is sent to the minor leagues. Not unexpectedly, she has to deal with a lot of teammates - and fans - who aren’t exactly welcoming. This is a great portrayal of minor league ball, with a spirited and funny female character. - Susan Dunn, Librarian 2, Children’s Services

Charlie has trouble interacting with people and sees the world a bit differently. Following routines helps, but when his father, a war journalist, is injured in Afghanistan Charlie finds himself traveling across the country with his siblings to get to his dad’s hospital. BROOMFIELD’S

Burgeoning Improvements

Continue Through the Summer Months By Dan Powers

Broomfield’s ongoing improvements to roadways and related construction projects will be noticeable this summer – from sidewalks to major infrastructure upgrades there are a few areas around the city that will be busy with activity keeping Broomfield in top shape.

T

he most obvious (and long-standing) project may be the improvements to Lowell Blvd. With a majority of the Phase I work between W. 136th and Misty completed, the road and concrete work will move to the east side. More work also will continue this summer as Xcel Energy’s contractor continues to install new underground power line on the west edge of the project from E. Midway to the Paul Derda Recreation Center. According to the Broomfield Planning Department this project zone will post a lower speed limit for the safety of everyone, and during non-peak travel hours (9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. ) traffic flagging operations will be encountered. NOTE: Plan on adding an extra 5-8 minutes to your trip in this area as temporary lane closures, flagging and traffic back-ups should be expected throughout the summer.

What’s still ahead for Lowell Blvd.: PHASE I (West side of Lowell & Tom Frost Parking Lot): Improve all drainage and utility, road and sidewalks, and traffic signal changes from 136th Ave. to East Midway. Anticipated completion: OCTOBER 2017. PHASE II (East side of Lowell and Median): Improve all drainage and utility, road and sidewalks, and remaining traffic signal changes from 136th Ave. to East Midway. Includes the final surface paving and marking of the entire project. Anticipated completion: JUNE 2018. PHASE III: Complete all irrigation systems and landscaping for the entire project. Anticipated completion: AUGUST 2018.

34

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JUNE 2017

include adding 324 residential units and about 4,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, restaurant, and office space. The existing parking structure would remain to serve the new residents and businesses. Demolition will begin this summer; the owners will concurrently submit a formal development application and other documents for consideration by the Broomfield City Council. Other projects in the works range from the Broomfield Farmette mixed-use development on W. 144th Ave. near Zuni to the Overlook Office park on the Northwest Parkway north of the Catania Apartments to the indoor Green RV Storage south of the Arista neighborhood and several others.

There is major work ahead for the Lowell Blvd. and West 136th Ave. intersection as well as Lowell Blvd. south of the intersection. In January of this year Broomfield City Council awarded a $7 million construction contract to Concrete Works of Colorado; work began in the spring and various improvements over a nearly one-mile corridor will be completed in June 2018. At that meeting, Broomfield City and County Engineer Katy Allen said this includes adding sidewalks, curbs & gutters, landscaping, bike lanes, a landscaped median, installing stand-alone streetlights, and burying the overhead power lines. Significantly this also includes the addition of a second southbound throughlane starting 1,000 feet north of West 136th Avenue and extending past the West Metro Fire Station south of West 136th Avenue. This is intended to improve traffic flow through the 2035 design horizon. CWC will also relocate the Tom Frost Reservoir parking lot, relocated north so its access aligns with Westlake Drive, paving the lot and increasing the size from 10 to 30 spaces. They will complete neighborhood entry signs and monuments for the Westlake neighborhood too. Katie acknowledged “construction fatigue” in the community borne of the south Lowell Blvd projects – fortunately this project isn’t as complex as that portion and “impacts to travelers should be much less,” according to Katie, as there’s no major excavation necessary and more existing road to work with. Another major continuing Broomfield project is the demolition of part of the Flatiron Marketplace which has been empty, with proposals by the owners to redevelop up to 20 acres of the east portion of the marketplace on the southwest corner of U.S. 36 and East Flatiron Crossing Drive. (Existing businesses on the east side such as Starbucks, Fidelity Investments and the Twin Peaks restaurant will remain.) In March, Broomfield City Council heard from Provident Realty Advisor, Inc. about ideas to convert the area (where the previous Best Buy and former Great Indoors stores were) into more than 10,000 sq. ft. of newly constructed commercial space and adding up to 1,200 apartments, a bikeway, green space, and a dog park over several phases. We will also have local non-profit organizations at the event again this year so you can find out how they are having a positive impact in our community and how you can get involved. Our featured non-profit organization will be Broomfield FISH. Please bring non-perishable food or personal care items to the event or plan to make a monetary donation. Critical items needed include canned fruit, oatmeal, baking mixes, condiments, cooking oil, cereal, Jell-O, jelly, juice, personal care items, baby wipes, diapers (sizes 4T and 5T), and pull-ups. Local musician and fan favorite, Patrick Keating, will be returning as our entertainment for the evening, and we are proud to once again continue our partnership with Loudmouth Media, publisher of The Broomfielder and Spotlight magazines. CODE COVERAGE

HOME GUIDE

Policy Basics Homeowners insurance can be confusing. Review your policy declarations page annually and know what your policy covers.

Code coverage is another home insurance coverage option that is sometimes overlooked. This covers the additional costs to repair damage in order to meet the current building codes. If your policy doesn't have this endorsement, you will be responsible for the additional costs.

HAIL SEASON IS HERE. ARE YOU COVERED? Insurance claims for roofs can be cumbersome to navigate. Homeowners filing claims are often confused by the forms, inspections, and dealing with insurance adjusters. Having an experienced roofing contractor on your side who can document everything will be very beneficial.

BOTTOM LINE Connect with your insurance agent annually to review policy details and discuss coverage options or possible coverage gaps. Additionally, make sure you are taking advantage of every discount opportunity available to you. Kelly Stitzer is a local general contractor experienced in storm damage insurance claims; advocating on behalf of homeowners in the claims process. Learn more about him on www.CIGconstruction.com

DEDUCTIBLE This is the portion of a covered loss that the insured must pay. Under most circumstances, the insurance company subtracts the deductible before the claim is paid. Deductible amounts can vary considerably and it affects the insurance premium paid for the policy. Some insurance companies are moving towards a percentage deductible, review your declarations page to make sure there are no surprises if you do have to file a homeowners insurance claim.

ACV VS. RCV Parts of your home, such as the roof, loses value over time due to factors such as age and wear and

tear. This loss in value is known as depreciation. Under most insurance policies, claim reimbursement begins with an initial payment for the Actual Cash Value (ACV) of the damage, or the value of the damage at the time of loss. If you have Replacement Cost Value (RCV) coverage included in your policy, you may be able to receive additional money to cover the depreciation, therefore covering total roof replacement less your deductible payment. Homeowners unknowingly opt for an ACV policy enticed by lower premium prices.
