Taste It Broomfield always feels a bit like the official start to summer. With the school year wrapped up and summer vacations on the calendar, a community soirée centered around great local food and drinks seems like the perfect transition to the calmer and more relaxing summer months. I hope to see you at Taste It on Thursday, June 7 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the 1STBANK Center. Tickets are available online only at www.broomfieldchamber.com through noon on June 7, so order yours today! Grab your friends and neighbors and join the fun. To coincide with Taste It, we are proud to present our annual restaurant issue with highlights from several of our advertisers. If it is just too hot to cook and you don’t have the energy for your grill, that’s ok. Check out our list beginning on page 20 and visit one of the featured restaurants for dinner tonight. Let them know you learned about them in The Broomfielder and be sure to take note of the numerous special offers and coupons throughout this issue. As the weather heats up, you will want to consider some tips from St. Anthony North Health Campus for making sure your active child stays healthy while enjoying the great outdoors this summer. Find details on page 18. In the weeks ahead, whether your vacation plans take you across the ocean, to a sunny beach, a remote hideaway, or the quiet of your own backyard, you will surely need a good book in tow. For the second year in a row, the librarians at Broomfield’s Library have graciously suggested some favorite titles to add to your summer reading list. I am personally intrigued by some of the teen fiction options and can’t wait to pick up a few of these titles. Check out their recommendations on page 30. Food, friends, the great outdoors, and a good book. What more could you want to kick off Summertime in Broomfield?
Thanks for reading,

Estate planning is more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can provide so much more to protect your loved ones. By example…. Mary and Bill were good parents, and their son John turned out to be a great person but a poor money manager. John had grown up, gotten married, completed college, and had a good job. But John spent every dime he earned, often even before he earned it. John had to have the latest things, and thought using a credit card to get them was a better approach than saving for them. If John got a dollar he spent two. Bill and Mary sought legal advice before their deaths. The first lawyer they spoke with said they did not need estate planning because their estate would not be death taxable. She told them to put beneficiary designations on all their assets to their son, because “it is simple and avoids probate.” They weren’t comfortable with that advice, and sought advice from a counseling-oriented attorney who took the time to learn more about them and their goals. Their primary objective was to protect John from blowing his inheritance after their deaths. So Bill and Mary left their assets in trust for John, not directly to him. As a result, John was not able to spend it as soon as he got it. They designed a system to help John learn how his inheritance could help support him for the rest of his life. Bill and Mary had sometimes wondered if the planning they did was worth the extra time and effort. Knowing John would be protected and have the opportunity to learn sound financial principles was worth it.

New Bal Swan Director Aims for Inclusiveness and Community Focus By Kristen Beckman
Bal Swan Children’s Center welcomed a new executive director to its staff this Spring.
D
ebbie Kunz spent the past 22 years working in early childhood education in northwest Missouri, most recently as head of a home visiting and intervention program called Parents as Teachers. With her two children now in college, Kunz was looking to make a change and had posted her resume on job sites. A serendipitous opportunity emerged when the Executive Director position at Bal Swan opened and appeared in her feed. The job description immediately caught her eye because Kunz and her husband had spent time in the Broomfield area while working for Up with People in the early 1990s. While in Missouri, Kunz earned her master’s degree in social work with an emphasis in administration. That coupled with her experience working in early childhood education seemed to be a perfect fit for the Executive Director role at Bal Swan and provided Kunz a welcome opportunity to return to Broomfield. “It allows me to impact an organization at a higher level than I was able to at the large school district program,” said Kunz. “It’s a joy to be back here; back with kids and parents.” Kunz said she was attracted to Bal Swan because of its mission of providing an environment that doesn’t see differences but promotes integration and values community. “We see strengths of people rather than difference and weakness,” said Kunz. “That mission drove me here.”
One of her primary missions in her new role at Bal Swan is to continue to strengthen and build the school’s focus on community, through events built around families. In addition, Kunz will provide overall leadership and visioning for Bal Swan, supervising both curriculum and fundraising efforts. Although she does not directly supervise teachers, Kunz said she “carries the torch for organization” and ensures that the schools operations are in line with its vision and mission and that its programs meet the needs of the community.
We see strengths of people rather than difference and weakness" Among the first events during Kunz’s tenure is the annual Bal Swan Golf Fore Kids fundraising tournament June 8 at the Broadlands. Golfers can register individually or as a foursome. Players receive an 18-hole round of golf, a cart, and lunch. Proceeds of the event support Bal Swan’s programs, which serve more than 100 preschool children with physical and developmental challenges or speech/language delays learning and playing alongside “typically developing” children. Bal Swan is hoping to raise more than $737,000 this year through fundraising efforts like the golf tournament to cover the deficit between money it receives for services provided and the actual cost of providing those services. “I know there’s a lot of competition for golf tournaments,” said Kunz. “This is a worthy cause and we thank people for investing in Bal Swan.” Kunz is also excited about the summer camps that will be starting this month at Bal Swan. The school’s students and alumni through second grade are eligible to participate in summer programs, which include age appropriate field trips and other programming.

North Metro Fire Rescue District and Northglenn Police Department join together to host the First Annual Red and Blue BBQ Cook-Off on June 23 outside of the Northglenn City Hall. The family-friendly event will include a BBQ competition, live music, vendors, and food trucks, all to raise funds for two charities that support fallen or seriously injured first responders in Colorado. The Red and Blue BBQ Cook-Off is a competition between cookoff teams in the categories of brisket, chicken, pork ribs, and dessert, with the best overall winner taking home a new pit barrel smoker. Additionally, North Metro Fire and Northglenn Police will square off in a whole hog roast for a special traveling trophy between the two departments. The host agencies are looking for cook-off teams to be a part of the inaugural event. Cost per team to enter is $50, and teams are expected to also provide samples to the public who attend. Anyone wishing to attend may purchase a ticket online for $15, which includes tickets to sample 10 cook-off meats from competitors. The cook-off event is from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the parking lot and outdoor space adjoining Northglenn City Hall, with the awards being presented later in the afternoon. Northglenn Rotary Club will provide a beer and wine tent for attendees to pair with their BBQ. All profits from the cook-off event will go to Colorado Professional Firefighters Foundation and Colorado C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors), which support Colorado first responders who have been killed or seriously injured in the line of duty.

aving grown up in Colorado, I know what a great time summer can be, especially when outdoor activities are involved. Now, as a family medicine physician with a sports medicine focus, I’m also aware of how important it is to stay healthy during these warm-weather months so you can continue to have fun outside. Here are five simple steps you can take to keep your kids healthy and having fun this summer.
1. Keep an eye on the sky. Weather conditions change rapidly in this region, especially for those of us near the foothills. Plan ahead if you’re hiking or biking so you can seek shelter, if necessary. If you’re at the pool and a storm builds, get out until the risk of lightning has passed.

2. Think H20 and sun protection. You know how powerful the Colorado sun can be when you’re living or playing a mile high or more above sea level. Teach your children the importance of staying hydrated, particularly when they’re involved in sports or other outdoor activities that keep them moving … and sweating. Drinking water every 30 minutes is a good guideline. Also, there’s a reason oranges are such a popular snack at kids’ soccer games: they’re not only convenient, they contain vital natural electrolytes. Skin protection is also extremely important at altitude. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30, remembering that higher SPFs have not been clinically shown to be more effective. If your child is sweating or swimming, reapply every 60 to 90 minutes. 3. Warm up and cool down. It’s never too early to teach your kids good fitness practices. Actively warming up the body prior to a game and cooling down by reducing activity slowly helps protect against injuries. 4. Gear up. Helmets are a must for kids—and adults—when riding bikes, scooters, and horses. If your child is playing team sports, make certain she or he understands why certain protective gear is important to avoid facial and head trauma. Make it a non-negotiable. 5. Try new activities. Encourage your child to experience many different forms of exercise, instead of settling on one sport. Current sports medicine research shows that the more diverse the physical engagement, the greater the overall fitness level. Plus trying many things builds resilience and a more realistic view of competition.
Here’s to a healthy, fun, and safe summer for you and your family.

In addition to food and beverage offerings from local establishments, Taste It also offers an opportunity to learn about Broomfield’s many great non-profits and community organizations on display at the event. “The Broomfielder magazine and Loudmouth Media look forward to partnering with the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce on this outstanding community event each year,” said Mike Garrison, owner and publisher. “Taste It is a fabulous presentation of Broomfield’s restaurant and beverage proprietors, and we are so pleased to work with the Chamber to support this great annual community-building event.” After checking in at the registration table, all attendees will receive a tasting glass and “Passport” for the event to note the different food and beverages enjoyed and vote for favorites in several categories. Will last year’s winners be able to defend their titles?
Tickets can be purchased in advance (through noon on June 7) at $25 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under, online at www.access.broomfieldchamber.com.

ADULTS The Great Alone
by Kristin Hannah (Adult/young adult)
This is a great crossover novel for adults and young adults. Leni is thirteen when her father Ernt, a former POW and Vietnam veteran, moves his family to a remote cabin in Alaska. Leni, seeking to find herself and a place to belong, desperately watches as her father struggles with severe PTSD. Leni’s mother Cora, both loving and loyal, tries tirelessly to convince Leni this move, this time, will change their lives for the better. Twists, turns, and heart-wrenching moments await readers, as Leni realizes the only person who can save her from her circumstances is herself. -Abby Yellman, Director of Library Services and Cultural Affairs. The Stranger in the Woods: The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit by Michael Finkel (Adults/teens)
At the age of 20, Christopher Knight left his home and walked into the woods of Northern Maine. He would encounter but one other human being for the next twenty-seven years. Finkel shares the methods of theft and survival Knight used to become what is known as the North Pond Hermit, and peppers the tale with practical survival skills and stories of contemporary hermits around our world. Recommended as an audiobook, too. -Pauline Noomnam, Teen Services Librarian

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JUNE 2018
TEENS Genuine Fraud
by E. Lockhart (Teens)
There are so many delicious twists and turns in this book that I hate to say much because I worry about giving something away. Basically there are two best friends: beautiful, rich Imogen, and Jule – also beautiful, but definitely not rich. For a while Imogen pretty much takes Jule in - to her house in the Hamptons, to her flat in London, to a fancy resort in Puerto Rico. But Ime eventually gets tired of paying for everything and the friendship sours. What happens next is unforgettable. Read this book! Note: In an odd and fantastic twist, the book starts from the last chapter and works backwards. So don’t get confused when you open it and it seems like it was printed incorrectly! -Susan Dunn, Children’s Librarian
They Both Die At the End by Adam Silvera (Teens 14+)
Imagine knowing that at some point, you will receive a call early in the morning informing you that this is your last day on earth, and you’ll be dead by the end of the day. This is the reality in which two teens, Mateo and Rufus, must face together on the same day. A funny, tender page-turner, this book is truly about living a day like it’s your last. -Oliver Green, Teen Services Dept.
The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli (Teens)
17-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso has always avoided relationships to protect her sensitive heart. In fact, she has had 26 crushes and no boyfriends or even a first kiss to share at the dreaded “Never Have I Ever” game. However, that is all going to change over the summer. Molly is putting into action “Operation Be Less Careful” and maybe Crush #27 will turn into Boyfriend #1. On top of all that, Molly is dealing with her changing relationship with her twin and the pains of growing up and finding out who you are. -Katherine Skeels, Collection Development Librarian
CHILDREN The Adventurers Guild
by Zack Loran Clark and Nick Eliopulos (Children)
On the day of the Guildculling, Zed (a half-elf with big dreams) finds himself drafted into the Adventurers Guild – tasked with fighting the Dangers and protecting the town, often leaving its members scarred or dead. This story is full of adventure and action, and set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world. Recommended for grades 5 to 8. -Rachel Fuller, Children’s Librarian
Greetings from Witness Protection by Jake Burt (Children)
13-year-old foster kid Nicki is recruited by the U.S. Marshals to join a family on the run from the mob. They know their pursuers will be looking for three people, but maybe not so much for a family of four. So Nicki – now Charlotte Trevor – and her little brother and parents enter the witness protection program and begin a new life in North Carolina. Their goal is to be average – no stellar grades, starring roles on the basketball team, wild haircuts or any sort of online presence. But will that be enough to keep their pursuers from finding them? This debut novel will keep readers on the edge of their seats! -Susan Dunn, Children’s Librarian
Baby Monkey, Private Eye
by Brian Selznick and David Serlin (Children)
This new, fast-moving book is about a baby monkey who is a detective with his own agency. Baby Monkey will take a job, look for clues, make notes, and solve the case! As with the other books by Brian Selznick, there are a lot of fun details inside the drawings and a “Key to Baby Monkey’s Office” along with other silly additions at the end of the book. Such a crazy, funny book for all ages! -Linda White, Children’s Services Librarian Continued on page 32 >>

Tradition and Change It’s hard to believe that it’s already spring in Broomfield. And that means Taste It Broomfield is back for another year! One of the signature events in the Broomfield culinary world is back and better than ever. With more vendors than at any year before and a new voting system, it promises to be delicious. Get your tickets for the June 7 event at www.broomfieldchamber.com before they sell out! While traditions go on, Broomfield is in a constant state of change. This year we will see the new 120th Ave. connection finally finished, hopefully ending the bottlenecks at 120th and Wadsworth we have had for decades. This year will also see groundbreaking on the new Community Center, and dare we hope … The Civic Center? That’s probably too much to ask. In order to make sure we get it right, the city needs time to plan and get buy in from the developer, neighbors, and the community at large. We have seen the completion of the ATRIA and Interpark buildings, both of which will give our business community some much needed commercial and warehouse space. And every time I drive by Arista (on the new 120th Ave.), the new retail buildings are a little closer to completion. The State government has also approved additional funds for transportation, and because of our chronic shortfall in transportation funding for years, we will probably see a ballot measure come forward to help meet that need. Maybe with these funds we will see some actual movement on our commuter rail and Highway 7? Not everything is rosy for the business community in Broomfield. We had a couple of fast food places go out of business on 120th, and many companies are saying that it is harder to find employees. A couple of restaurants told us they couldn’t participate in Taste It this year because they just didn’t have the staff. It isn’t only the low unemployment rate that makes it hard to hire, the constant increase in housing prices makes it harder for people to live in Broomfield. According to Realtor.com, the median listing price for a home in Broomfield is now $479,000, with the sub $300,000 pretty much nonexistent. This makes it very difficult for people to get their start here. This is a problem that will need to be tackled at the State and Local level, as well as by our business and nonprofit sectors. While we have definite issues we need to work on, by almost any standard Broomfield is booming and open for business. As long as we continue to work together to solve our issues, there are no problems we cannot overcome.

A Community Gem:
Flatirons Habitat for Humanity Celebrates
25 Years By Bette Erickson
Flatirons Habitat for Humanity celebrated its 25th anniversary with a gala in May at The Studio in Boulder. The event served to highlight Flatirons Habitat for Humanity’s mission of building strength, stability, selfreliance, and shelter. “For a quarter-century, Flatirons Habitat has worked to offer people the stability and opportunity that come handin-hand with home ownership,” explained Susan Lythgoe, executive director for Flatirons Habitat for Humanity. “We have partnered with dozens of local families, ensuring that they have a decent place to live. Over the next twenty-five years, we will continue to expand our scope and increase our capacity to see that number surge even higher,” she added. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Flatirons Habitat for Humanity, the Habitat affiliate serving Boulder and Broomfield Counties. Since its charter in 1993, the local nonprofit has built, rehabilitated, or repaired homes for 97 families in the Boulder/ Broomfield area, as well as funding the construction of 130 homes internationally. By expanding affordable housing options locally and abroad, Flatirons Habitat has worked strategically for more than two decades to foster healthy, educated, and equitable communities. It was 1993 when Flatirons Habitat was chartered as a Habitat for Humanity International affiliate and selected its first homeowners shortly after. The Portillo family, along with their three children, was selected to live in the affiliate’s first-ever home in Boulder County. Less than a year later the family moved into their new home. Importantly, since 2009 Flatirons Habitat has focused on building its homes to LEED Platinum standards ensuring the benefits of efficient and environmentally-friendly homes.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JUNE 2018
Not surprisingly, home ownership is statistically associated with increased financial security, expanded social and educational opportunities, and improved health. Flatirons Habitat’s flexibility and dedication to the community remain crucial as the affordable housing crisis persists. In 2017, Boulder was ranked the sixth most expensive U.S. city in which to purchase a home, with the median cost of a single-family home at $548,000. Affordable housing is defined as not costing more than 30% of a family’s income. Addressing this issue, Flatirons Habitat continues to expand its build capacity, aiming to provide affordable housing for as many local families as possible. In 2018, for the first time in the affiliate’s history, three build sites will be concurrently active. This includes its biggest-ever build on Violet Ave., in Boulder. This site will provide 19 affordable housing units. To be sure, by expanding local affordable housing options, Flatirons Habitat is not only building strong, self-reliant families, but also contributing to cohesive and meaningful communities. For more information about Flatirons Habitat for Humanity, visit www.flatironshabitat.org.

DOING SOME LANDSCAPI NG IN THE YARD THIS SUMMER? The City and County of Broomfield Stormwater Management Program would like to remind you that when conducting your landscaping projects, have your landscape material delivered in your driveway or find a staging area on your property. One of the leading causes of water pollution is landscaping material (rocks, compost, dirt, etc.) that is deposited in the curb and gutter. This kind of material can get washed away in stormwater runoff. The City and County of Broomfield works hard to maintain its storm sewer system and drainage ways. Storm sewers discharge directly into creeks, streams and ponds untreated. It is illegal and a violation of the Broomfield Municipal Code to dispose of or allow materials other than stormwater to discharge into the storm sewer system. Thank you for assisting the City and County of Broomfield in its efforts to keep our water clean. For more information, contact the Stormwater Management Program at 303.464.5648 or go to www.broomfield.org/wastewater
